Apstrakt
When we discuss biomass and its use for energy, we always have in mind its benefits, such as its ability to - reduce greenhouse gas emissions by replacing fossil fuels; - increase energy security by diversifying the energy mix and reducing dependence on imported fuels; and - create economic opportunities by promoting rural development, creating jobs, and adding value to waste streams. As a renewable energy source, biomass also has some obstacles to overcome. This paper addresses some of the key technical challenges associated with biomass combustion products - how to increase the ash melting temperature, i.e., reduce the formation of ash deposits on the heating surfaces, and how to reduce the emission of nitrogen oxides. It will also be seen whether it is safe to return all the ash produced by burning this fuel to the ground.
