AB - Octacalcium phosphate (OCP) is a material from the calcium phos-phate group with a crystal structure similar to hydroxyapatite. The removal process of lead and cadmium in aqueous solution using octacalcium phosphate material was investigated. OCP material was synthesized by the solution pre-cipitation method. The structural and phase properties of OCP before and after the removal process were determined by the X-ray diffraction (XRD) method. Microstructural and semi-quantitative analysis of the material was investigated by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). Characteristic bands and functional group determination were revealed using the Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy with attenuated total reflection (FTIR-ATR). As target pollutants, Cd(II) and Pb(II) were chosen in adsorption experiments. Results show that OCP in the first 10 min has a very fast removal rate for Pb(II); the equilibrium state was reached after 10 min with more than 98 % adsorption efficiency. Results for Cd(II), results showed the same removal rate but somewhat lower adsorption efficiency, amounted to approximately 63 %.

AB - Thermo-chemical conversion of cigarette butt filters (CBF) waste was investigated using various thermal analysis techniques (simultaneous TG-DTG-DTA and DSC methods) at different heating rates in an inert atmosphere. Thermo- and thermo-physical properties of waste material were discussed, from the point of view of chemical structure and the influence of experimental parameters on the conversion process. It was established that acetyl groups of plasticizer (triacetin) interact with cellulose acetate through dipolar interactions and hydrogen bonding’s. Influence of these polar interactions can affect the position of glass transition temperature, Tg, of CBF. Based on estimated value of Tg from DSC analysis, it was found that cellulose acetate present in CBF has degree of substitution equals to 2.8, where the presence of cellulose triacetate was confirmed. It was assumed that an increase of degree of substitution leads to decline in the crystallinity. A decline of crystal-linity causes the reduction of hydroxyl groups, leading to less organized chains, and whereby decreasing of inter-molecular interactions through hydrogen bond-ing. Based on the examination of thermophysical characteristics of the tested ma-terial, it was found that both, the heat capacity and the thermal inertia of material linearly increase with temperature, during pyrolysis progression. It was concluded that the type of bio-char produced in this process would have a large capacity to store the heat, which may depend on the formed particles size diameter and poros-ity. Furthermore, it was inferred that magnitude drops of thermal conductivity, κ, after Tg depends on the material fibrillation

AB - Radiation‑induced normal tissue toxicity is a common acute and chronic outcome of radiotherapy (RT) for prostate cancer (PCa). There are currently no existing pre‑assessments before treatment to predict acute and late RT‑induced toxicity. Novel predictive blood biomarkers in radiation oncology may improve treatment decision‑making and therapeutic monitoring for patients with PCa. A comprehensive systematic search of microRNA (miRNA/miR) profiling studies published in PubMed, Science Direct and Google Scholar was performed. The present systematic review, supported by meta‑analysis, summarises key findings and discusses the results of prospective clinical studies investigating miRNA expression levels and their association with RT‑induced toxicity in PCa. Out of seven clinical studies, six highlighted levels of 10 miRNAs changing in plasma, serum or peripheral blood mononuclear cells during RT. The post‑RT expression levels of miRNA‑132‑5p, miRNA‑1‑3p, miRNA‑410 and miRNA‑221 were increased, and miRNA‑23a‑3p expression was decreased among patients with low‑grade RT‑induced toxicity. Furthermore, in patients with high‑grade RT toxicity, miRNA‑197‑3p, miRNA‑151a‑5p, miRNA‑18b‑5p, miRNA‑99a and miRNA‑21 expression was increased, while miRNA‑132‑5p expression was decreased. The present miRNA meta‑analysis could be the focus of future studies to identify their potential clinical value as PCa biomarkers and therapeutic mediators in RT‑induced toxicity. The variations in miRNA levels post‑RT could be used as predictive biomarkers of RT‑induced toxicity. However, further extensive validation is required to establish the relationship between miRNA expression levels and RT‑induced toxicity in PCa and to confirm their predictive value.

AB - The increasing incidence rate of pancreatic cancer worldwide, along with high resistance to existing chemotherapies and radiotherapy, demand new approaches for its treatment. Nanoparticle-guided cancer treatment modalities are promising in their anti-cancer efficiency and upgrading potential. We have synthesized and characterized Gd-doped titanium-dioxide nanoparticles (Gd-TiO 2 NPs), which showed good biocompatibility with MIA PaCa-2 and PANC-1 pancreatic cancer cell lines. To assess the effect that these NPs have on tumor cells, we used synchrotron radiation Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and principal component analysis. We elucidated the biochemical changes in the two cell lines induced after their interaction with these NPs. Results demonstrated changes in nucleic acids and carbohydrate metabolism and alterations in the protein conformation in both cell lines. In addition, considerable changes in lipid area were observed in PANC-1 cell line, suggesting that Gd-TiO 2 NPs have a prospective to be further studied as systems for pancreatic cancer treatment.

abstract = "The increasing incidence rate of pancreatic cancer worldwide, along with high resistance to existing chemotherapies and radiotherapy, demand new approaches for its treatment. In addition, considerable changes in lipid area were observed in PANC-1 cell line, suggesting that Gd-TiO 2 NPs have a prospective to be further studied as systems for pancreatic cancer treatment.",

AB - Background The MMP-9 is a known player in atherosclerosis, yet associations of the MMP-9 -1562 C/T variant (rs3918242) with various atherosclerotic phenotypes and tissue mRNA expression are still contradictory. This study aimed to investigate the MMP-9 -1562 C/T variant, its mRNA and protein expression in carotid plaque (CP) tissue, as a risk factor for CP presence and as a marker of different plaque phenotypes (hyperechoic and hypoechoic) in patients undergoing carotid endarterectomy. The MnSOD as an MMP-9 negative regulator was also studied in relation to CP phenotypes. Methods and results Genotyping of 770 participants (285 controls/485 patients) was done by tetra-primer ARMS PCR. The MMP-9 mRNA expression in 88 human CP tissues was detected by TaqMan® technology. The protein levels of MMP-9 and MnSOD were assessed by Western blot analysis. The MMP-9 -1562 C/T variant was not recognized as a risk factor for plaque presence or in predisposing MMP-9 mRNA and protein levels in plaque tissue. Patients with hypoechoic plaques had significantly lower MMP-9 mRNA and protein levels than those with hyperechoic plaque (p = 0.008, p = 0.003, respectively). MnSOD protein level was significantly higher in hypoechoic plaque compared to hyperechoic (p = 0.039). MMP-9 protein expression in CP tissue was significantly affected by sex and plaque type interaction (p = 0.009). Conclusions Considering the differences of MMP-9 mRNA and protein expression in CP tissue regarding different plaque phenotypes and the observed sex-specific effect, the role of MMP-9 in human atherosclerotic plaques should be further elucidated.

AB - Here, we present the results of the synthesis, surface modification, and properties analysis of magnetite-based nanoparticles, specifically Co0.047Fe2.953O4 (S1) and Co0.086Fe2.914O4 (S2). These nanoparticles were synthesized using the co-precipitation method at 80 ◦C for 2 h. They exhibit a single-phase nature and crystallize in a spinel-type structure (space group Fd3m). Transmission electron microscopy analysis reveals that the particles are quasi-spherical in shape and approximately 11 nm in size. An observed increase in saturation magnetization, coercivity, remanence, and blocking temperature in S2 compared to S1 can be attributed to an increase in magnetocrystalline anisotropy due to the incorporation of Co ions in the crystal lattice of the parent compound (Fe3O4). The heating efficiency of the samples was determined by fitting the Box-Lucas equation to the acquired temperature curves. The calculated Specific Loss Power (SLP) values were 46 W/g and 23 W/g (under HAC = 200 Oe and f = 252 kHz) for S1 and S2, respectively. Additionally, sample S1 was coated with citric acid (Co0.047Fe2.953O4@CA) and poly(acrylic acid) (Co0.047Fe2.953O4@PAA) to obtain stable colloids for further tests for magnetic hyperthermia applications in cancer therapy. Fits of the Box-Lucas equation provided SLP values of 21 W/g and 34 W/g for CA- and PAA-coated samples, respectively. On the other hand, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis points to the catalytically active centers Fe2+/Fe3+ and Co2+/Co3+ on the particle surface, suggesting possible applications of the samples as heterogeneous self-heating catalysts in advanced oxidation processes under an AC magnetic field.

AB - The paper shows the possibilities of increasing the hydrophobicity of the paper surface by applying layers of hydrophobic material to the surface. Various application techniques and the following substances were tested: stearic acid, shellac and zinc-hydroxide. Hydrophobicity was tested using the modified Cobb method, measuring the contact angle and drop retention time. The presence of hydrophobizing agents was confirmed by FTIR spectroscopy. It was found that the methods of applying the hydrophobizing agent, used in this work, give much better results with stearic acid, compared to shellac. This manuscript presents novel possibilities of increasing paper surface hydrophobicity by applying layers of hydrophobic material to the surface. Various layer application techniques were examined, as well as substances including: stearic acid, shellac and zinc-hydroxide. Hydrophobicity was tested using the modified Cobb method, measuring the contact angle and drop retention time. The presence of hydrophobizing agents was confirmed by FTIR spectroscopy. Based on the results achieved, it can be concluded that the methods of applying the hydrophobizing agent, used in this work, give much better results with stearic acid, compared to shellac.

abstract = "U ovom radu su predstavljene mogućnosti povećanja hidrofobnosti površine papira nanošenjem slojeva hidrofobnog materijala na njegovu površinu. Ispitane su dve različite tehnike nanošenja stearinske kiseline, šelaka i cink-hidroksida na površinu papira. Hidrofobnost je ispitana modifikovanom metodom po Kobu, merenjem ugla kvašenja i vremena zadržavanja kapi. Prisustvo sredstava za hidrofobizaciju potvrđeno je FTIR spektroskopijom. Utvrđeno je da se, primenjenim metodama nanošenja, mnogo bolji rezultati dobijaju sa stearinskom kiselinom nego sa šelakom., The paper shows the possibilities of increasing the hydrophobicity of the paper surface by applying layers of hydrophobic material to the surface. AB - Emerging issues triggered by rapid industrialization and technological development demand productive green solutions for water and ecosystem preservation. Zero-dimensional (0D) carbon nanomaterials (CNMs) with ultra-small size, outstanding characteristics, and antibacterial effect have shown tremendous potential as photocatalysts in water purification treatment as adsorbents, ion detectors, and/or in remediation of hazardous pollutants. This chapter aims to highlight a few 0D CNMs with unique features acquired for selective photocatalytic processes. An emphasis would be given to the impact of the physical and chemical properties of different CNMs on the removal efficiency of organic pollutants from water media. Furthermore, under a broad spectrum of light, the photoactivity of selected CNMs in the form of nanoparticles or membrane/composite systems will be prioritized. Finally, the readership will be introduced to the benefits and limitations of 0D carbon–based nanomaterials’ potential application on an industrial scale.

AB - The spectroscopic properties of the Mn4+ ion are investigated in the series of isostructural double perovskite compounds, Ba2BTaO6 (B = Y, Lu, Sc). A comparison of these properties highlights the influence of covalent bonding within the perovskite framework and the degree of order between the B3+–Ta cations on the energy and intensity of the Mn4+2E → 4A2 emission transition (R-line). These two parameters of the emission spectrum are of importance for practical application since they determine the phosphor luminous efficacy. The influence of covalent bonding within the corner shared BO6/2 and TaO6/2 perovskite framework on the energy of the R-line energy is investigated. From the spectroscopic data, we have derived information on the influence of the degree of order between the B3+ and Ta5+ cations on the intensity of the R-line. The lowest energy and the highest intensity of the R-line are found in the double perovskite, Ba2ScTaO6. The purpose of this work is to propose for first time an explanation of these effects in the considered double perovskites. The obtained results are useful guidelines for practical improvement and tuning of key parameters of phosphors to the desired values.

AB - Quality control and assurance of mammography X-ray generators include usage of solid-state detectors and/or ionization chambers which are calibrated in standard reference radiation fields. IEC 61267:2005 standard defines reference mammography radiation fields for Mo/Mo anode/filtration, while various anode/filtration combinations are encountered in clinical mammography X-ray units. Not all Secondary Standard Dosimetry Laboratories have an X-ray generator with Mo/Mo radiation setup, thus traceability can be established only for the available anode/filter combinations which is commonly limited to W/Al. In this study, W/Al radiation fields were established under laboratory conditions by performing half-value layer measurements, and characterization of four solid-state detectors was performed. X-ray multimeter performance was evaluated in terms of energy response in the W/Al radiation fields. In the laboratory conditions the energy response of the dosimeters had larger deviation from unity for dosimeters without appropriate anode/filter combination selected in the software settings, even though most of the dosimeters had uniform relative response. Discrepancy in the response was further investigated by examining its variation induced by available detector software settings, and it was determined that the dosimeter response can vary up to 20 %. In clinical setup, half-value layer was determined, and detector performance was examined. Dosimeters were tested in clinical fields with Mo/Mo, Mo/Rh, W/Rh, W/Ag anode/filter combinations in the X-ray tube voltage range from 25 kV to 35 kV. For most clinical radiation fields, multi-element detectors had energy response deviation within ±5 %. The single-element detector had one software setting available and has exhibited strong energy dependence. Extensive testing of detector response such as presented in this paper allows for correction factor interpolation based on half-value layer.

AB - Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have exceptional physical-chemical properties that make them suitable for a wide range of uses, such as the photocatalytic removal of organic contaminants from water. Here, we provide a one-step, ecologically friendly, and economical method for creating iron/nitrogen co-doped (Fe/N-CQD) and nitrogen-doped (N-CQD) quantum dot nanomaterials. The characteristics of the developed nanomaterials were investigated with regard to how surface chemistry impacts their capacity for adsorption and photoactivity in a case study of a specific water pollutant reduction. The influence of the two irradiation sources-operating in the UV and visible ranges-on the photoactivity of materials was highlighted. Finally, their eco-friendliness was examined on four different human tumor cell lines.

AB - This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of adsorption and photocatalysis techniques at removing the herbicide clomazone (CLO) and the antidepressant known as amitriptyline (AMI) from water. This study employed kinetic models to analyze the removal processes and assess the potential toxicity of the treated water. The structure and morphology of the prepared multi-walled carbon nanotubes were characterized as adsorbents by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared techniques, and Raman spectroscopy. The adsorption kinetics of CLO and AMI were studied on the pristine and functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes. Kinetic studies were performed by modeling the obtained experimental data using three kinetic models: pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and Elovich kinetic models. On the other hand, the efficiency of CLO and AMI photodegradation was examined as a function of the type of irradiation (UV and simulated solar irradiation) and type of TiO2 photocatalyst (Aeroxide and Kronos). Under the experimental conditions employed, the reaction followed pseudo-first-order kinetics. Additionally, in order to assess the toxicity of water containing CLO, AMI, and their intermediates, toxicity assessments were conducted using human fetal lung fibroblast cells. The results obtained indicate the effectiveness of both methods and provide valuable insights into their removal mechanisms, contributing to the advancement of sustainable water treatment strategies.

AB - Two series of new ferrocenyl pyrazolines have been synthesized by the reac-tion of ferrocenyl chalcones and their analogues with hydrazine hydrate in thepresence of corresponding carboxylic acid. Single-crystal X-ray crystallographicdata were used for detailed analysis of the interesting versatility of four com-pounds in the formation of intermolecular interactions. The analysis revealedan excellent structural flexibility of the present ferrocenyl pyrazoline moleculesfor the non-covalent interactions, with a particular contribution of the ferro-cene units. In addition, for comparison with crystallographic findings, weinvestigated the protective effect of all compounds on DNA against hydroxyland peroxyl radicals induced by Fe2+,H2O2, and 2,20-azobis(2-amidinopro-pane) dihydrochloride (AAPH). The results indicated that all compoundsshowed rather similar DNA protective activity, which was comparable withquercetin as a well-known protective compound. This similarity in antigeno-toxic action could be explained by the established excellent structural flexibil-ity of ferrocenyl pyrazolines for the formation of different intermolecularinteractions as important structural property for molecular recognition.

AB - In the era of intensive development of microelectronics, energy, and car industries along with Radio-Frequency (RF) telecommunications, the pollution caused by Electromagnetic Waves (EWs) is ever-present. EW interferences (Electromagnetic Interference-EMI) exhibit perturbation and negative impact on devices and systems including those used in everyday life as well as on the specialized, sensitive, and sophisticated instruments used in research laboratories. EMI could cause untrusted signals and RF noise. To prevent these issues, materials able to block or absorb the radiated EWs are urgently required. The GrInShield project is focused on developing new graphene-based shielding nano-materials and increasing researchers' expertise in EMI shielding measuring, protective materials, and possibilities to bring these new products to the market. INTRODUCTION: The GrInShield project uses graphene oxide (GO) obtained by Hummers' reaction and electrochemical exfoliation of graphite [1,2]. We have analysed the factors that affect the shielding efficiency of materials [3] and studied the reaction conditions that lead to obtaining graphene with different sizes and oxygen content [4]. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: The GrInShield project aims to produce composites of GO with silver nanowires (AgNWs) to develop GO-AgNW composites for EMI shielding applications. To achieve these goals, the project gathers experts from the chemistry of nanomaterials, and polymer processing, along with specialists for near-field microscopy tools and radiofrequency (RF) characterization of materials. CONCLUSIONS: The GrInShield project is developing new nanomaterials for EMI shielding based on carbon nanomaterials, metallic nanomaterials, and polymers. The fabrication of low-cost, sustainable, eco-friendly, durable EMI shielding material should be achieved.

AB - Emission of greenhouse gases and infectious diseases caused by improper agro-waste disposal has gained significant attention in recent years. To overcome these hurdles, agro-waste can be valorized into valuable bioactive compounds that act as reducing or stabilizing agents in the synthesis of nanomaterials. Herein, we report a simple circular approach using Citrus reticulata Blanco (C. reticulata) waste (peel powder/aqueous extract) as green reducing and capping/stabilizing agents and Zn nitrate/acetate precursors to synthesize ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) with efficient antimicrobial and photocatalytic activities. The obtained NPs crystallized in a hexagonal wurtzite structure and differed clearly in their morphology. UV-vis analysis of the nanoparticles showed a characteristic broad absorption band between 330 and 414 nm belonging to ZnO NPs. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy of ZnO NPs exhibited a Zn-O band close to 450 cm-1. The band gap values were in the range of 2.84-3.14 eV depending on the precursor and agent used. The crystallite size obtained from size-strain plots from measured XRD patterns was between 7 and 26 nm, with strain between 16 and 4%. The highly crystalline nature of obtained ZnO NPs was confirmed by clear ring diffraction patterns and d-spacing values of the observed lattice fringes. ZnNPeelMan_400 and ZnNExtrMan showed good stability, as the zeta potential was found to be around −20 mV, and reduced particle aggregation. Photoluminescence analysis revealed different defects belonging to oxygen vacancies (VO+ and VO+2) and zinc interstitial (Zni) sites. The presence of oxygen vacancies on the surface of ZnAcExtrMan_400 and ZnAcPeelMan_400 increased antimicrobial activity, specifically against Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Salmonella enteritidis (S. enteritidis). ZnNExtrMan with a minimal inhibitory concentration of 0.156 mg/mL was more effective against Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), revealing a high influence of particle size and shape on antimicrobial activity. In addition, the photocatalytic activity of the ZnO NPs was examined by assessing the degradation of acid green dye in an aqueous solution under UV light irradiation. ZnAcPeelMan_400 exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity (94%) within 90 min after irradiation compared to other obtained ZnO NPs.

AB - In this study, we conducted an extensive investigation into broadband near-infrared luminescence of Cr3+-doped Ca3Y2Ge3O12 garnet, employing first-principles calculations within the density functional theory framework. Our initial focus involved determining the site occupancy of Cr3+ activator ions, which revealed a pronounced preference for the Y3+ sites over the Ca2+ and Ge4+ sites, as evidenced by the formation energy calculations. Subsequently, the geometric structures of the excited states 2E and 4T2, along with their optical transition energies relative to the ground state 4A2 in Ca3Y2Ge3O12:Cr3+, were successfully modeled using the ΔSCF method. Calculation convergence challenges were effectively addressed through the proposed fractional particle occupancy schemes. The constructed host-referred binding energy diagram provided a clear description of the luminescence kinetics process in the garnet, which explained the high quantum efficiency of emission. Furthermore, the accurate prediction of thermal excitation energy yielded insights into the thermal stability of the compound, as illustrated in the calculated configuration coordinate diagram. More importantly, all calculated data were consistently aligned with the experimental results. This research not only advances our understanding of the intricate interplay between geometric and electronic structures, optical properties, and thermal behavior in Cr3+-doped garnets but also lays the groundwork for future breakthroughs in the high-throughput design and optimization of luminescent performance and thermal stability in Cr3+-doped phosphors.

AB - The potential application of colloidal polyaniline (PANI) as an antimicrobial is limited by challenges related to solubility in common organic solvents, scalability, and antimicrobial potency. To address these limitations, we introduced a functionalized PANI (fPANI) with carboxyl groups through the polymerisation of aniline and 3-aminobenzoic acid in a 1:1 molar ratio. fPANI is more soluble than PANI which was determined using a qualitative study. We further enhanced the solubility and antimicrobial activity of fPANI by incorporating Ag nanoparticles onto the synthesized fPANI colloid via direct addition of 10 mM AgNO3. The improved solubility can be attributed to an approximately 3-fold reduction in size of particles. Mean particle sizes are measured at 1322 nm for fPANI colloid and 473 nm for fPANI-Ag colloid, showing a high dispersion and deagglomeration effect from Ag nanoparticles. Antimicrobial tests demonstrated that fPANI-Ag colloids exhibited superior potency against Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus, Gram-negative Escherichia coli, and Bacteriophage PhiX 174 when compared to fPANI alone. The minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) and minimum virucidal concentration (MVC) values were halved for fPANI-Ag compared to fPANI colloid and attributed to the combination of Ag nanoparticles with the fPANI polymer. The antimicrobial fPANI-Ag colloid presented in this study shows promising results, and further exploration into scale-up can be pursued for potential biomedical applications.
