AB - High concentrations of LTA zeolite (27-52mass%) were embedded in poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) matrix to obtain composite hydrogels with porosity and active sites originating from both components. Substandard mechanics of PMAA and aggregation of zeolite particles, were thereby overcome. The composites had remarkably higher density than PMAA xerogel (1700 to1400 kg m−3), higher crosslinking density (54.8 to1.29 mol m−3) and lower swelling degree (41 to 420 kg kg−1). Zeolite particles were uniformly dispersed in PMAA matrix and there was no agglomeration or leaching of zeolite despite very high concentrations. XRD patterns revealed that the inclusion of zeolite particles affected the short-range order in the PMAA matrix. Being an active filler LTA zeolite notably improved thermal stability and mechanics of PMAA hydrogel, multiplying the storage modulus 5.2 times in dry and 21.8 times in swollen state. Structure–property correlations were provided making the base for further development of tailor-made zeolite-PMAA composite hydrogels.

AB - Polymer composites based on unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) and reinforced with particles based on unmodified/modifiedplant provenance biosilica particles were synthesized and characterized. An unsaturated polyester resin was obtained fromwaste poly (ethylene terephthalate (PET). Biosilaca particles are made from rice husk biomass. The surface of the producedsilica particles was modified using three different silanes: 3-trimethoxysilylpropyl methacrylate (MEMO), trimethoxyvinylsilane (TMEVS), and 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APTMS). The microhardness test method was used to investigatethe mechanical properties of synthesized composite material with variations in dwell times and applied loads. Optimization ofcomposite microhardness value prediction in function of synthesized parameters (type of modification of silica particles) andmeasurement parameters (applied loads and dwell times) was done using the method of response surface methodology (RSM)regression analysis. The maximal microhardness values (0.459 GPa) were obtained of type modification of silica particles withvinyl with 80% confidence for 120 experimental variables. This method can be used to choose the optimal dwell time and loadfor comparison of measurements between different composite materials and to enable the choice of the material in terms ofoptimization of the quality of reinforcement and quality of interphase determined by surface modification.

AB - A biphasic [Mn(dipya)(H2O)4](tpht)/{[Zn(dipya)(tpht)]·H2O}n complex material, I (dipya = 2,2’-dipyridylamine, tpht2– = dianion of terephthalatic acid) was synthesized by ligand exchange reaction and characterized by XRPD and FTIR spectroscopy. A ZnO/ZnMn2O4 composite, II, has been prepared via thermal decomposition of I in an air atmosphere at 450 °C. XRPD, FTIR and FESEM analyses of II revealed the simultaneous presence of spherical nanoparticles of wurtzite ZnO and elongated nanoparticles of spinel ZnMn2O4. The specific surface area of II was determined by the BET method, whereas the volume and average size of the mesopores were calculated in accordance with the BJH method. The measurements of the mean size, polydispersity index and zeta potential showed colloidal instability of II. Two band gap values of 2.4 and 3.3 eV were determined using UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, while the measurements of photoluminescence revealed that II is active in the blue region of the visible spectrum. Testing of composite II as a pigmentary material showed that it can be used for the colouring of a ceramic glaze.

AB - Liposome-encapsulated folic acid is incorporated into the films made from sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) (2 mas%) and a mixture of CMC and solagum (9:1 w/w) using the film-forming cast solution method. Histidine is used to increase solubility for folic acid in liposomes (1–5 mg mL−1), and propylene glycol is used as a film plasticizer (2.6 mas%). The obtained films (50–60 µm tick) containing 3.12–20.19 mg of folic acid per gram of film are envisaged to be used as patches for transdermal delivery of folic acid. Therefore, some physical, mechanical, release and structural attributes of the films are scrutinized. Folic acid gives yellow color to the films and contributes to stronger chemical bonds which result in improved strength of the film. Liposomes prolong the release of folic acid from films to 24 h without adverse effects on mechanical properties of the films, but degrade homogeneity of the films, which can be ascribed to its agglomeration within the film matrix as revealed by atomic force microscopy. According to the release at pH 5.5, the film formulation based on a blend of CMC and solagum containing 3 mg mL−1 liposome-encapsulated folic acid is recommended. Practical Application: Folic acid is effective in reducing oxidative stress levels in the skin and neutralizing the harmful free radicals and is also essential for various metabolic reactions in the body. However, the limited solubility of folic acid linked with its poor absorption in an organism, low storage stability, short half-life upon oral consumption, specific food preferences of some people, extensive liver metabolism, and pregnancy-induced vomiting point to a large potential in transdermal usage of folic acid. This has motivated us to design new multicomponent polymer-lipid systems as an alternative solution to overcome some of these drawbacks. The results obtained for these multicomponent films pointed to their potential for prolonged release of folic acid to 24 h, which can also be useful for scientists interested in encapsulating similar poorly soluble compounds in CMC patches. The finding can be also valuable information for pharmaceutical manufacturers and scientists worldwide.

AB - The heterocyclic azo dyes represent significant synthetic organic colorants. AB - Oxidized cotton linters, TOCell, were used as an adsorbent or derived membrane there from by linterscross-linking with citric acid. The adsorption/desorption study of Pb2+, methylene blue (MB), and crystalviolet (CV) removal, was performed. Adsorption data fitting, obtained using the Langmuir model, gave116 mg g 1 (Pb2+), 179 mg g 1 (MB) and 482 mg g 1 (CV) at 25 ℃ for TOCell linters, while 101 mg g 1(Pb2+), 165 mg g 1 (MB) and 426 mg g 1 (CV) for TOCell membrane. After desorption dyes were subjectedto photocatalytic degradation while lead was transformed into stable lead phthalate (LP), and furtherused as filler in composites based on unsaturated polyester resins (UPR). UPR was synthesized fromwaste polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Structural characterization was performed using FTIR, SEM,and NMR methods. Composites loaded with acryloyl modified kraft lignin (A-KfL) and/or LP was testedfor tensile strength, Vickers microhardness, and fire resistance (UL-94 V method). The best mechanicaland fireproofing properties were obtained at 15 wt.% A-KfL and 40 wt.% Al(OH)3 addition. The resultsof the toxicity leaching test (TCLP) confirmed the environmentally safe stabilization of desorbed pollutantin the UPR matrix. Application of environmentally friendly membranes, susceptible to easy biodegradation, had low negative effects to the environment.

AB - This paper presents sustainable technology for environmentally friendly composite production. Biobased unsaturated polyester resin (b-UPR), synthesized from waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET) glycosylate and renewable origin maleic anhydride (MAnh) and propylene glycol(PG), was reinforced with unmodified and vinyl-modified biosilica nanoparticles obtained fromrice husk. The structural and morphological properties of the obtained particles, b-UPR, as well ascomposites, were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), nuclear magneticresonance spectroscopy (NMR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electronmicroscopy (TEM) techniques. The study of the influence of biosilica modification on the mechanicalproperties of composites was supported by hardness modeling. Improvement of the tensile strengthof the b-UPR-based composite at 2.5 wt.% addition of biosilica modified with vinyl silane, named“b-UPR/SiO2-V” composite, has been achieved with 88% increase. The thermal aging process appliedto the b-UPR/SiO2-V composite, which simulates use over the product’s lifetime, leads to the deterioration of composites that were used as fillers in commercial unsaturated polyester resin (c-UPR).The grinded artificially aged b-UPR composites were used as filler in c-UPR for the production of atable top layer with outstanding mechanical properties, i.e., impact resistance and microhardness, aswell as fire resistance rated in the V-0 category according to the UL-94 test. Developing sustainablecomposites that are chemically synthesized from renewable sources is important from the aspect ofpreserving the environment and existing resources as well as the extending their life cycle.

AB - Copper from sulfate baths without and with added inorganic pigment particles based on strontium aluminate doped with europium and dysprosium (SrAl2O4: Eu2+, Dy3+) was electrodeposited on a brass cathode by a galvanostatic regime. Morphological, structural, and roughness analysis of the pigment particles, the pure (pigment-free) Cu coating, and the Cu coatings with incorporated pigment particles were performed using SEM, XRD, and AFM techniques, respectively. Hardness and creep resistance were considered for the examination of the mechanical properties of the Cu coatings, applying Chicot–Lesage (for hardness) and Sargent–Ashby (for creep resistance) mathematical models. The wettability of the Cu coatings was examined by the static sessile drop method by a measurement of the water contact angle. The incorporation of pigment particles in the Cu deposits did not significantly affect the morphology or texture of the coatings, while the roughness of the deposits rose with the rise in pigment particle concentrations. The hardness of the Cu coatings also increased with the increasing concentration of pigments and was greater than that obtained for the pigment-free Cu coating. The presence of the pigments caused a change in the wettability of the Cu coatings from hydrophilic (for the pigment-free Cu coating) to hydrophobic (for Cu coatings with incorporated particles) surface areas.

AB - N-doped TiO2/carbon composites (TiO2/CN) with different nitrogen content, were obtained starting from titanium isopropoxide and glucose, and by varying the amount of melamine, added to starting reaction mixture. For comparison, an undoped sample (TiO2/C) was also prepared. Structural and surface characteristics were determined through scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and nitrogen adsorption–desorption isotherms. The photocatalytic activity of TiO2/CN composites was examined via photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue and multiclass pharmaceuticals from water solution. It was found that N doping of TiO2/carbon composites induced changes in structural and surface characteristics of TiO2/CN composites, improving their adsorption, but decreasing photocatalytic efficiency. Nevertheless, TiO2/CN0.05 composite obtained by the hydrothermal synthesis in the presence of glucose and 0.05 g melamine showed the highest efficiency for removing selected pharmaceuticals and methylene blue from aqueous solutions through the combined processes of adsorption in the dark, and photocatalytic degradation under UV and visible irradiation.

AB - This study investigates the effects of ultrasound, in combination with chemical pretreatments, on the quality attributes (total phenolic and carotenoid content, antioxidant activity (2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl assay (DPPH)), ferric-reducing ability (FRAP), CIE L* a* b* color, non-enzymatic browning, rehydration ratio, textural and morphological properties) of red pepper subjected to drying (hot air drying or freeze drying). The fractional factorial design was used to assess the impact of factors. The global Derringer desirability function was used to determine the optimal conditions for the best quality attributes of dried pepper. The drying method influenced total phenolic content, a* (redness), and initial rehydration ratio; pretreatment time significantly affected FRAP antiradical activity, a*, chroma and non-browning index, while pH-value had a significant effect on the texture of dried pepper. Non-enzymatic browning was reduced to 72.6%, while the DPPH antioxidant capacity of freeze-dried peppers was enhanced from 4.2% to 71.9%. Ultrasonic pretreatment led to changes in the pepper morphology, while potassium metabisulfite (KMS) was a more effective additive than citric acid.

AB - The health effects attributed to exposure to ambient PM2.5 concentrationsabove 10 μg/m3by using the AirQ+ modeling software were assessed. Thehourly concentrations of PM2.5 were collected from 13 air pollutionmonitoring stations in the Belgrade district during Jun and July 2021.,which were further used as input data for the AirQ+software. The averageconcentration of PM2.5 for two-month monitoring from all sampling sites inthe city was 14.8 μg/m3, the maximum daily concentration was 55.7 μg/m3,while the maximum concentration per hour was 365 μg/m3. The spatialdistribution of concentrations was mapped using geostatistical interpolation, revealing hotspots within the city centre and industrial area of the district. The burden of disease, such as stroke, ischemic heart disease (IHD), chronicobstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and lung cancer (LC), due to theambient PM2.5 pollution was evaluated according to the WHO methodologyfor health risk assessment of air pollution. The model used for thisassessment is based on the attributable proportion defined as the section ofthe health effect related to exposure to air pollution in an at-risk population. The estimated attributable proportion was 19.4% for stroke, 27.2% for IHD,15.3% for COPD and 9.0% for LC. The estimated number of attributablecases per 100,000 population at risk, due to PM2.5 air pollution, for stroke,IHD, COPD, and LC, was 28, 34, 15, and 8, respectively.

AB - The human health risks of cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and nickel (Ni) in fifty regular and slim cigarette brands available in the Serbian market were evaluated. Distributions on per-cigarette basis concentrations of these metals, as determined by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry, were used as inputs in the probabilistic risk assessment. The contents of these metals in cigarettes varied significantly. Larger quantities of the studied metals were observed in regular cigarettes than in slim cigarettes, but the concentration levels per cigarette tobacco mass were higher in slim cigarettes. The metal concentrations in counterfeit cigarettes were marginally higher than those in authentic brands. Based on the mean concentrations, Pb was the most abundant toxic metal, followed by Ni and Cd. The calculated values of the cumulative hazard index (HI) and incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) indicated a low noncarcinogenic risk and low but not negligible carcinogenic risk from Cd, Pb, and Ni. The mean HI and ILCR values obtained using probabilistic and deterministic approaches were similar. A Monte Carlo simulation was employed to minimize the uncertainty of health risk estimation. The sensitivity analysis revealed that the most influential factor was cigarette mass followed by Cd content.

AB - Pesticides are extensively used in the cultivation and postharvest protection of citrus fruits, therefore continuous monitoring and health risk assessments of their residues are required. This study aimed to investigate the occurrence of pesticide residues on citrus fruits and to evaluate the acute and chronic risk for adults and children. The risk ranking of twenty-three detected pesticides was carried out according to a matrix ranking scheme. Multiple residues were detected in 83% of 76 analyzed samples. In addition, 28% contained pesticides at or above maximum residue levels (MRLs). The most frequently detected pesticides were imazalil, azoxystrobin, and dimethomorph. According to the risk ranking method, imazalil was classified in the high-risk group, followed by prochloraz, chlorpyrifos, azinphos-methyl, tebufenpyrad, and fenpiroximate, which were considered to pose a medium risk. The majority of detected pesticides (74%) posed a low risk. The health risk assessment indicated that imazalil and thiabendazole contribute to acute (HQa) and chronic (HQc) dietary risk, respectively. The HQc was negligible for the general population, while the HQa of imazalil and thiabendazole exceeded the acceptable level in the worst-case scenario. Cumulative chronic/acute risk (HIc/HIa) assessment showed that chronic risk was acceptable in all samples for children and adults, while the acute risk was unacceptable in 5.3% of citrus fruits for adults and 26% of citrus fruits for children. Sensitivity analyses indicated that the ingestion rate and individual body weight were the most influential risk factors.

AB - Researchers are faced with everyday demands for safer and more efficient therapy for many diseases, especially serious one such as various types of cancer. Numerous anticancer drugs are poorly-water soluble and therefore their encapsulation and controlled release remain quite challenge. In present study, we deepened our research of hydrophilic carrier based on poly(methacrylic acid) and casein (PMAC) by investigating its potential for encapsulation and controlled release of novel poorly water-soluble dihydropyrimidion-azo-pyridon compound (DHPMP). DHPMP is a dye that has been proven to show cytotoxic activity against chronic myeloid leukemia K562 cells. By encapsulating DHPMP into the carrier and delivering it into the intestines, DHPMP absorption could be the fastest and the number of therapeutic doses and side effects can be reduced. Carriers based on PMAC and DHPMP (PMAC-DHPMP) were synthetized and characterized by FTIR, SEM and single compression tests. The swelling behavior of PMAC-DHPMP carriers and cumulative DHPMP release were investigated depending on the amount of crosslinker and encapsulated DHPMP in two media which were simulating pH environments in human stomach and intestines. The prolonged and controlled release of DHPMP was achieved. In vitro cytotoxic activity of PMAC-DHPMP carriers against K562 cells and the cell cycle analysis showed great potential of the carriers for application in leukemia treatment.

AB - Polymer matrix composite materials have found application in dentistry because of good mechanical properties, aesthetic, easy processing, and possibilities of the repair. Acrylates are materials used to make and repair dentures. Reinforcements in the form of short glass or polymer fibers are added to improve the mechanical properties of dental polymers. In this study, the processing of composite material with a polymer matrix from commercial auto-polymerized acrylate Simgal, with reinforcement in the form of short poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) fibers was examined. Samples were processed in three series: pure Simgal, Simgal/PET 1 wt% and Simgal/PET 3 wt%. The influence of the reinforcement in the form of short PET fibers on the mechanical properties of composite materials was investigated. Strength and hardness were tested by impact testing and Vickers microhardness, and it was shown that there is an increase in absorbed energy and hardness. The modulus was reduced by the addition of PET fibers and by increasing the amount of fibers in the composite. The increase in the amount of PET fibers also resulted in a smaller loss of surface mass of the samples compared to the pure matrix by 63% and 93%, respectively. Cavitation test revealed better cavitation resistance of composites than the pure acrylate.

AB - This study presents the impact properties of the new form of hybrid thermoplastic composites. The Kolon fabrics were impregnated with the 10 wt% poly (vinyl butyral) (PVB)/ethanol solution with the addition of silica (SiO2) particles originating from rice husk or layered double hydroxide modified silica particles (FeAl-LDH@SiO2) as reinforcement. All the composites consisted of one layer of the impregnated fabric where the silica particles concentrations were 0.5 wt% and 1.0 wt% regarding PVB. The impact properties of the composite samples were analyzed by the controlled energy puncture impact tester. The structures of the composite samples were determined by the attenuated total reflection Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The results showed that the Kolon/PVB/1 wt% FeAl-LDH@SiO2 sample yielded the maximum impact force.

AB - Rice husk was used to produce silica particles, which were then used to reinforce the polymer matrix. The synthesized SiO2 particles were characterized using X-ray diffraction, Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy with EDS. In a PMMA matrix, prepared SiO2 particles in amounts of 1, 3, and 5 wt.% were used as reinforcing agents. The goal of this research was to see if SiO2 particles had any effect on the mechanical properties of polymer composite materials. The morphology of the composites was examined using a field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM). Vickers microindentation hardness and impact testing were used to determine the mechanical properties of the obtained composites. The indentation creep’s behavior of a polymethylmetacrylate (PMMA) composite material with varying amounts of nanoparticles (SiO2) was investigated and analyzed.

AB - Processing and characterization of PMMA-MXene composites were investigated. γ-Methacryloxypropyltrimethoxy (MEMO) silane was used to modify the surface of MXenes and improve the compatibility between MXenes and the polymer. The FTIR analysis revealed the formation of a chemical bond between MXene and MEMO silane, while the XPS analysis confirmed the presence of silicon in the functionalized MXene. PMMA composites with non-functionalized and functionalized MXene were prepared using a solution casting method. Tensile tests showed that, compared to neat PMMA, Young’s modulus increased in both composites by 22.1 and 27.6%, respectively. As a result of coupling between the PMMA matrix and the surface-modified MXenes, the tensile strength also increased by about 37%. In addition, optical spectroscopy showed higher absorption for the composite with surface-modified MXenes and short-lived fluorescence with emission intensity sensitive to the crumpling of functionalized MXene nanosheets.

AB - Carbonaceous solid-phase extraction (SPE) sorbent, efficient in isolation and enrichment of multiclass pesticides and pharmaceuticals from water, was synthesized starting from cheap waste beech sawdust and using KOH as the activated agent. The first step in carbon material preparation was hydrothermal carbonization of the waste beech sawdust. Following hydrothermal treatment, the obtained material was activated, using different amounts of KOH. It was found that applied activation leads to changes in material structure, an increase in specific surface area, and a decrease in the number of surface oxygen groups compared to carbonized sample. SPE procedure of multiclass pesticides and pharmaceuticals from water using activated carbonized beech sawdust (AcSD) was optimized by selecting the appropriate elution solvents, the sample pH, and the sample volume to obtain the highest enrichment efficiency. The optimized SPE procedure was applied for water analysis using different AcSD samples as a sorbent for analyte preconcentration. Activated carbon sorbent, obtained with the highest amount of KOH, showed the highest recoveries regarding the most analytes, which were comparable with the recoveries obtained by commercial cartridges. © 2022 Serbian Chemical Society. AB - In this study, the influence of boron doping on structural and surface properties of carbon material synthesized by a hydrothermal method was investigated, and the obtained results were compared with the previously published influence that boron has on characteristics of carbonized boron-doped hydrothermal carbons (CHTCB). Hydrothermal carbons doped with boron (HTCB) were obtained by the hydrothermal synthesis of glucose solutions with different nominal concentrations of boric acid. It was found that glucose based hydrothermal carbon does not have developed porosity, and the presence of boron in their structure has insignificant influence on it. On the contrary, additional carbonization increases the specific surface area of the undoped sample, while an increase in boron content drastically decreases the specific surface area. Boron doping leads to a decrease in the amount of surface oxygen groups, for both, hydrothermally synthesized and additionally carbonized materials. Raman analysis showed that the boron content does not affect a structural arrangement of the HTCB samples, and Raman structural parameters show a higher degree of disorder, compared to the CHTCB samples. Comparison of structural and surface characteristics of hydrothermal carbons and carbonized materials contributes to the study of the so far, insufficiently clarified influence that boron incorporation has on the material characteristics. © 2022 Serbian Chemical Society. AB - The aim of this study was to develop antimicrobial nanocomposite textile material comprising of Cu-based nanostructures synthesized on oxidized cotton fabric using Arctostaphylos uva-ursi (L.) Spreng., Ericaceae (bearberry leaves) as a green reducing agent for adsorbed Cu2+-ions. In order to provide sufficient number of carboxyl groups for complexation with Cu2+-ions a two-step oxidation process with NaIO4 and NaClO2 was carried out. The influence of NaIO4 concentration on content of carboxyl groups and Cu-based nanoparticles was studied by FTIR and AAS. HPLC analysis identified the gallic acid known as a reducing agent in bearberry leaves extract. FESEM and XRD analyses revealed that using bearberry leaves extract and gallic acid solution as reducing agents led to a formation of spherical Cu2O/CuO nanoparticles and CuO nanosheets, respectively. These nanoparticles and nanosheets provided excellent antibacterial activity against Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli and Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus. Cytotoxicity on human keratinocyte cells was shown to depend on their copper content.

Additionally, the focus of this study was to investigate the possible utilization of the binary doped Sr,Mg-HAP compacts as dentin substitutes in restorative dentistry by evaluating their bonding ability with commercially available restorative materials using the shear bond strength test (SBS). The hydrothermally obtained mono-doped Mg5 and Sr5 showed the monophasic apatite structure, while in all co-doped samples β-TCP phase was formed, resulting in biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) powders. It was confirmed that co-doping with Sr and Mg ions led to the thermal stabilization of the β-TCP phase by suppressing the phase transition into α-TCP when sintered at 1200 °C. Moreover, the co-presence of Mg ions significantly improved the hardness of Sr-doped HAP from 3.74 to 5.02 GPa. Sr,Mg-HAP dental inserts were found to achieve sufficient bonding (13.53 MPa) through the micromechanical interlocking with Z250 dental composite and Single Bond Universal dental adhesive applied with a total etch approach. The SBS values obtained for the SrMg-HAP insert were similar to the literature data on bonding ability with human dentin, indicating that binary doped Sr,Mg-HAP ceramics present a promising material for application in restorative dentistry as dentin substitutes.

AB - This study investigated the use of different natural raw soil materials as low-cost adsorbents for the removal to remove As(V) and Pb(II) from aqueous systems. It deals with the effect of different soil textures, sandy loam, loam, and loamy sand, on adsorption efficiency. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was used to carry out the comprehensive characterization of materials, as well as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and liquid nitrogen porosimetry or the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET). Studies were performed in a batch system; the initial concentration of examined heavy metals was 100 μg·L–1, pH varied in the range of 4–6, and the adsorbent dosage was 5–20 mg/10 mL. Sandy loam was the most efficient adsor-bent for As(V) separation, with a maximum removal efficiency of 47.5%, while the loam was the most efficient for Pb(II) separation, with a maximum removal efficiency of 94.2%. The removal efficiency was affected mainly by the adsorbent characteristics. Performed kinetic studies revealed two steps of adsorption for both investigated ions. Obtained results indicate that natural sorbents used in this work present environmentally sustainable material for As(V) and Pb(II) removal, on the one hand, and the basis for further studies on the simultaneous removal of heavy metals from water and their reduced mobility in soil, on the other. © 2022 Desalination Publications.

AB - In this study, halloysite nanotubes (HNT) were modified by: 3-glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GLYMO), 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APTES), and 2,2-Bis[4-(glycidyloxy) phenyl] propane (DGEBA), and incorporated in the epoxy resin matrix to enhance its mechanical properties. The HNT/epoxy nanocomposite materials were prepared by mixing different ratios of untreated/treated HNT with neat epoxy resin. Characterization of untreated/treated HNT was performed by Fourier-transformation infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The quantity of grafted molecules and thermal stability of newly synthesized materials were determined by thermogravimetric (TG) and derivative thermogravimetric (DTG) analysis. Tensile properties of newly synthesized materials were compared, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis of the fracture surfaces were performed. Incorporation of APTES modified HNT (HNTAPT) and two-step modification APTES followed by DGEBA (HNTAPTDG) has increased the tensile strength of the nanocomposite materials up to 72% and 61%, and strain at break up to 1082% and 1216%, respectively, compared to neat epoxy. It was concluded that the modification of HNT contributed to the enhancement of the dispersion and the cross-linking in the epoxy resin matrix. © 2021 Society of Plastics Engineers
