AB  - Effect of methyl methacrylate (MMA) as a binder and heating treatment were investigated to improve green alumina compacts machinability. Properties of green compacts and their corresponding sintered samples prepared with and without MMA were compared. Investigation of green and sintered properties was performed on samples compacted at applied pressures up to 150 MPa. After pressing, samples with MMA were thermally treated at 115oC. The intention was to enhance the polymerization of MMA at a temperature a little higher than the glass transition temperature (Tg = 103oC) of poly (methyl methacrylate). Green compacts with MMA had higher green density values than those without MMA. Sintered samples with MMA had lower values of sintered density and higher values of total porosity; after sintering, relative linear shrinkage was around 15 % for the whole range of applied pressures. The possibility of easily machining the green compacts with MMA produces great possibilities for application in many fields

Sr,Mg co-doping of calcium hydroxyapatite: Hydrothermal synthesis, processing, characterization and possible application as dentin substitutes

AB  - The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of binary Sr, Mg ion-doping compared to the single-ion doping effects on the phase composition and morphology of hydrothermally obtained calcium hydroxyapatite (HAP) powders and on the phase composition, microstructure, and mechanical properties of the sintered materials. Additionally, the focus of this study was to investigate the possible utilization of the binary doped Sr,Mg-HAP compacts as dentin substitutes in restorative dentistry by evaluating their bonding ability with commercially available restorative materials using the shear bond strength test (SBS). The hydrothermally obtained mono-doped Mg5 and Sr5 showed the monophasic apatite structure, while in all co-doped samples β-TCP phase was formed, resulting in biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) powders. It was confirmed that co-doping with Sr and Mg ions led to the thermal stabilization of the β-TCP phase by suppressing the phase transition into α-TCP when sintered at 1200 °C. Moreover, the co-presence of Mg ions significantly improved the hardness of Sr-doped HAP from 3.74 to 5.02 GPa. Sr,Mg-HAP dental inserts were found to achieve sufficient bonding (13.53 MPa) through the micromechanical interlocking with Z250 dental composite and Single Bond Universal dental adhesive applied with a total etch approach. The SBS values obtained for the SrMg-HAP insert were similar to the literature data on bonding ability with human dentin, indicating that binary doped Sr,Mg-HAP ceramics present a promising material for application in restorative dentistry as dentin substitutes.

AB  - Calcium hydroxyapatite (HAP) presents the main mineral component of human bones and teeth, and thus is widely used bioceramic material for thehard tissue repair and regeneration. The biological HAP is never found pure in nature butdoped with multiple therapeutic ions, such as Cu, Mg, Sr, Zn, etc., which are found to play important roles in bone metabolism and growth. Hence, foreign cations have been introduced into the synthetic calcium hydroxyapatite, in order to induce a specific biological response after implementation, such as osteogenesis, angiogenesis, improved cell attachment and proliferation. However, the presence of the cations leads to the lattice distortion of the calcium-hydroxyapatite, resulting in different physico-chemical and mechanical properties. The hydrothermal synthesis of calcium hydroxyapatite leads to nanosized rod-like particles, which were found to possess properties close to those of the biological HAP. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of hydrothermal synthesis parameters on physico-chemical and mechanical properties of mono- and binary cation-doped calcium hydroxyapatite by employing XRD, SEM and Hardness by Vickers tests. The temperature applied during the hydrothermal synthesis (150- 180 °C) was found to influence the hardness of the HAP based compacts sintered at 1200 °C.

AB  - The controllable synthesis of rutile TiO2 single crystal particles with the preferential orientation of {111} facets still remains a scientific and technological challenge. Here, we developed a facile route for fabrication of rutile TiO2 nanorod crystals (RTiO2NRs) having high ratios of oxidative {111} to reductive {110} surfaces. RTiO2NRs were synthesized using a peroxo-titanium complex (PTC) approach, which was controlled by changing the Ti/H2O2 ratio. The thus obtained RTiO2NRs revealed a high tendency to agglomerate through orientation-dependent attachment along the {110} facets. This resulted in an increased {111}/{110} surface ratio and led to a markedly improved photocatalytic activity of RTiO2NR aggregates. The reported findings illustrate the rich potential of the herein proposed facile and energy-efficient synthesis of nanostructured rutile TiO2-based photocatalysts.

Dry-pressed anodized titania nanotube/CH3NH3PbI3 single crystal heterojunctions: The beneficial role of N doping

AB  - Highly ordered, anodically grown TiO 2 nanotubes on titanium supports were annealed in ammonia atmosphere in order to incorporate nitrogen doping (≤2 at.%) in the titanium oxide lattice. FESEM micrographs revealed nanotubes with an average outer diameter of 101.5 ± 1.5 nm and an average wall thickness of about 13 nm. Anatase crystals were formed inside the tubes after annealing in ammonia atmosphere for 30 min. With further annealing, rutile peaks appeared due to the thermal oxidation of the foil and rise as the duration of heat treatment was increased. The concentration and chemical nature of nitrogen in the nanotube arrays can be correlated to the optical response of dry-pressed heterojunctions of doped TiO 2 /CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 single crystals. The N-TiO 2 /perovskite heterojunction with the highest amount of interstitial nitrogen exhibited an improved photocurrent, indicating the importance of the semiconductor doping-based heterojunction optimization strategies to deliver competitive levels of halide perovskite-based optoelectronic devices to be envisioned for urban infrastructures. © 2019

AB  - Highly ordered, anodically grown TiO 2 nanotubes on titanium supports were annealed in ammonia atmosphere in order to incorporate nitrogen doping (≤2 at.%) in the titanium oxide lattice. FESEM micrographs revealed nanotubes with an average outer diameter of 101.5 ± 1.5 nm and an average wall thickness of about 13 nm. Anatase crystals were formed inside the tubes after annealing in ammonia atmosphere for 30 min. Doping of TiO2 nanotubes with nitrogen by annealing in ammonia for visible light activation: Influence of pre- and post-annealing in air

AB  - The ∼60 nm wide and ∼2 μm long TiO2 nanotubes were obtained by anodization of Ti films sputtered on F-doped tin oxide glass. For N-doping the samples were annealed in ammonia atmosphere. The effect of pre- and post-annealing in air on the nature and amount of incorporated N was studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. By measuring the absorption spectra of the obtained samples and interpreting the corresponding Tauc plots it was shown that the sample annealed just in ammonia showed the highest visible light absorption even after sputtering cleaning and a decrease of N amount from 3.8% to 1%. Pre and/or post annealing in air led to smaller amount of incorporated N, that caused less pronounced absorption enhancement and smaller band gap narrowing compared to the sample annealed only in ammonia. By fitting of N 1 s line, the contribution that was assigned to substitutional N was detected only in the samples that did not sustained post-annealing. The study showed that post-annealing in air might lead to partial conversion of N atoms in TiO2 to oxidized nitrogen species that are easily removed with sputtering. It is also possible that substitutional nitrogen was suppressed by oxygen from air to move to interstitial site. Weakly bonded NOx surface species, which are cleaned away by sputtering, can be removed by post-annealing in air. Those surface species could act as sensitizers and when their amounts are reduced, the core absorption properties, as a result of interstitial incorporation of N in TiO2 structure, were revealed. Much lower visible light sensitization was achieved in the case of pre-annealed sample in comparison to sample without pre-annealing, regardless the same quantity and type of incorporated nitrogen.

Effective removal of Reactive Orange 16 dye from aqueous solution by amine-functionalized sepiolites

AB  - Natural and acid-activated sepiolites, functionalized by covalent grafting of [3-(2-aminoethylamino) propyl]trimethoxy-silane were used as adsorbents for the removal of an anionic Reactive Orange 16 dye from aqueous solutions. The influence of initial pH (pHi) on the adsorption was first investigated in comparison with the adsorption onto unmodified sepiolites; then the dye removal process by modified samples was subjected to kinetic and equilibrium studies at pHi = 2.0 or 5.0, at different temperatures. Results showed that the adsorption of dye was favorable at lower pHi and at higher temperatures, in terms of adsorption capacity and rate of adsorption. The binding sites on the adsorbents surfaces were considered to be protonated amine groups, which play a role in the electrostatic interactions with the dye anions at pHi = 2.0. Formation of hydrogen bonds between hydrogen from amine groups and oxygen from the dye and van der Waals forces were proposed as the mechanisms of adsorption at pHi = 5.0. The adsorption kinetics was well fitted to the pseudo-second- order kinetic model, while the equilibrium adsorption data were well correlated with the Sips isotherm. The adsorption capacity of both modified sepiolites was much higher than of the parent samples, whereas the capacity of the functionalized acid-activated sepiolite was higher (~172 mg/g) than of the functionalized natural sepiolite (~158 mg/g) at 298 K, pHi 5.0.

AB  - One-dimensional (1D) TiO2 nanotubes perpendicular to the substrate were obtained by electrochemical oxidation of titanium foil in an acid electrolyte. In order to alter the crystallinity and the morphology of films the as-anodized amorphous TiO2 nanotube films were sintered at elevated temperatures. The evolution of the morphology was visualized via scanning electron microscopy (SEM), while the crystalline structure was investigated by Xray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. The chemical composition was studied by Xray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The effects of crystallinity and morphology of TiO2 nanotube (NTs) films on photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange (MO) in an aqueous solution under UV light irradiation were also investigated. The TiO2 nanotubes sintered at 650 degrees C for 30 min had the highest degree of crystallinity and exhibited the best photocatalytic activity among the studied TiO2 nanotube films.

AB  - Initial results en route toward construction of complex magnetic core-shell silica and organosilica nanotheranostics are presented. Magnetite nanoparticles (15 nm in diameter) are embedded within mesoporous silica nanoparticles to produce cell-like material with predominantly one magnetite nuclei-resembling core per nanoparticle, with final particle diameter of ca. 150 nm, specific surface area of 573 m(2)/g and hexagonally structured tubular pores (2.6 nm predominant diameter), extended throughout the volume of nanoparticles. Two forms of spherical core-shell nanoparticles composed of magnetite cores embedded within mesoporous organosilica shells are also obtained by employing ethylene and ethane bridged organobisalkoxysilane precursors. The obtained nanomaterials are characterized by high surface area (978 and 820 m(2)/g), tubular pore morphology (2 and 2.8 nm predominant pore diameters), different diameters (386 and 100-200 nm), in case of ethylene- and ethane-composed organosilica shells, respectively. Different degree of agglomeration of magnetite nanoparticles was also observed in the obtained materials, and in the case of utilization of surfactant-pre-stabilized magnetite nanoparticles for the syntheses, their uniform and non-agglomerated distribution within the shells was noted.

AB  - A process of obtaining N-doped TiO2 nanotubes sensitized by CdS nanoparticles is presented, including detailed characterizations performed along the synthesis. Transparent TiO2 films consisting of nanotubes, 2.5 mu m long and of similar to 60 nm inner diameter, were obtained after anodization of a titanium film deposited onto FTO glass substrate. N-doping was achieved by annealing of TiO2 film in ammonia. X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy measurements showed that nitrogen was substitutionally incorporated in the TiO2 matrix, with the N:Ti concentration ratio of 1:100. The doping changed the optical properties of the material in such a way that the absorption edge was shifted from 380 nm to 507 nm, as observed from diffuse reflectance spectra. The influence of the microwave (MW) irradiation on the synthesized CdS quantum dots and their optical properties was investigated. It was shown that the diameter of CdS nanoparticles was increased due to releasing of S-2-ions from dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as a consequence of the MW treatment. The (N)TiO2 films were then used as substrates for matrix assisted pulsed laser deposition of the CdS quantum dots with DMSO as a matrix. The laser parameters for the deposition were optimized in order to preserve the nanotubular structure open, the latter being an important feature of this type of photoanode. The structure obtained under optimized conditions has an additional absorption edge shift, reaching 603 nm.

AB  - The magnetic nanocomposites (MNCs), used as adsorbents for Cd2+ ions, were prepared by a co-precipitation method using both the untreated natural (SEP) and the partially acid-activated (ASEP) sepiolites as supports for magnetite. The synthesis conditions differed as follows: NaOH or NH3 was added in the SEP or the ASEP suspension before or after the addition of Fe3 and Fe2+. The SEP-based MNCs prepared using NaOH had a lower magnetization, but higher adsorption capacities than the MNCs synthesized using NH3. The order of the mixing of the reagents had a small influence on the properties of SEP-based MNCs, especially when NaOH was used for the synthesis. Due to acidity of the surface functional groups of the ASEP, the magnetic composite could be synthesized only when NH3 was added in the suspension of ASEP having Fe3+ and Fe2+ ions. Despite of the worse dispersibility of the magnetic particles, the adsorption capacityof the ASEP-based composite was higher than of the MNC with SEP prepared by the same procedure. All the MNCs showed a superparamagnetic behavior at room temperature and the adsorption capacities were higher than of pure compounds. The adsorption of Cd2+ on the composites was best fitted with the Sips model, which suggested the chemisorption on the heterogeneous surface at energetically non-uniform sites until a monolayer was formed. AB  - This study demonstrates that PEG-assisted hydrothermal synthesis provides a convenient and eco-friendly route to fabrication of mesoporous magnetite with enhanced capacity for phosphate removal, excellent potential for magnetic separation and good reusability. Adsorption of phosphate onto 4 laboratory prepared magnetite powders was investigated in a systematic manner. Powders were synthesized in poly(ethylene) glycol-free or assisted conditions (PEGs 400 and 20,000 at varied PEG/water ratio), and characterized in terms of crystalline structure, and magnetic, morphological, textural, and acid-base properties. PEG acted as a powerful pore forming agent, the PEG/water ratio being the key factor in developing the surface area and mesoporosity of magnetite. Uptake capacity for phosphates increased with an increase in surface area and pore volume. PEG 20,000 at a ratio of 3:1 gave the best result. This mesoporous (D-max = 11 nm), nano-scale ( LT 10 nm) magnetite was ca. 9 times more efficient than nonporous micrometric powder derived from PEG-free synthesis (Langmuir maximum capacity, q(m) = 26.2 vs. 3.0 mg g(-1)). The adsorption was pH-dependent, in accord with variations in zeta potential of magnetite. Opposite shifts of isoelectric point and point of zero charge confirmed specific adsorption of phosphates at water/magnetite interface which proceeded via replacement of surface hydroxyls and sulfates. The post-annealing in air after annealing in ammonia was optimized to attain the best photocatalytic activity for dye degradation under simulated visible light. The size of anatase nanocrystals decreased by doping and the specific surface area of the powders increased. The XPS analysis confirmed a successful substitution of Ti4+ by S(4+) and/or S(6+), which caused a very small band-gap narrowing. The gel annealing in ammonia was much more efficient for interstitial nitrogen incorporation in TiO2 lattice than the powder annealing. The annealing in ammonia of the gel synthesized with dimethyl sulfoxide provided the highest visible-light activity owing to high specific surface area, appropriate mesoporosity and high photoabsorption due to efficient N,S co-doping. AB  - The influence of electrochemical conditions and the heat treatment on the crystal structure and the microstructure evolution of TiO2 based nanotubes synthesized by the self-ordering anodization process is investigated in this work. The electrochemical anodization was performed at room temperature, for 30 minutes under 15, 20 and 25 V, with stirring. The as-anodized Ti foils were annealed in air at 450, 600, 650 and 700 °C for 30 minutes. The structure and the lattice dynamics of the samples has been studied by using XRD and Raman spectroscopy methods. The microstructure development of the 1-D TiO2 nanostructures has been analyzed by FESEM.

AB  - Ordered titania nanotubes (pore diameter approximate to 90 nm and wall thickness approximate to 10 nm) were obtained by the anodization technique and used for the ex-situ deposition of cadmium sulfide quantum dots (CdS QDs) via simple immersion of titania substrates in the CdS colloid. The colloidal dispersion of CdS nanoparticles in water was obtained in the presence of the bifunctional ligand, mercapto silane, which binds to the surface of CdS providing stability to the colloid and preventing further growth of the synthesized nanoparticles. The blue-shift of the optical absorption indicated that the CdS nanoparticles were of quantum dot size. Using the effective mass model, the average particle size was calculated to be 5.4 nm. Transmission electron microscopy provided the verification for the estimated size of the nanoparticles, which was followed by performing selected area electron diffraction to determine the mixed phase (cubic and hexagonal) of the synthesized CdS QDs. Scanning electron microscopy and reflectance spectroscopy were employed to characterize the nanostructures consisting of TiO2 nanotubes with different loadings of CdS QDs (after 24 h and 72 h immersion). It was demonstrated that mercapto silane efficiently binds CdS QDs onto TiO2 nanotubes enabling Visible-light response of the obtained nanocomposites. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. AB  - Using Spark Plasma Sintering it is possible to produce polycrystalline ceramics of very fine microstructure and good mechanical properties. This work presents the fabrication of such ceramics using Eu3+-doped (Y0.7Gd0.3)(2)O-3 nanopowder as a starting material. We monitored the changes in the morphology of ceramic samples and their consolidation with additional thermal treatments at 650 degrees C and 1100 degrees C. The ceramics grain size remained in the sub-micron domain, even when elevated temperatures were used for annealing. The best results were obtained for the sample sintered at 1100 degrees C for 20 min, which had the smallest grain size, theoretical density, and the most intensive photoluminescence, along with the maximum hardness and appropriate fracture toughness. The Judd-Ofelt intensity parameters and branching ratios were calculated, taking into account the difference in the effective refractive index for the nanopowder and ceramic samples. AB  - Amorphous powders of iron doped 3:2 mullite (3Al(2)O(3)center dot 2SiO(2)) were prepared by sol-gel combustion process using ethanol-water solutions of Al(III) nitrate, Fe(III) nitrate, TEOS and urea. Compositions up to 15 wt% of Fe2O3 were investigated. After combustion and heat treatment at 800 degrees C for 4 h, XRD analysis confirmed that the powders were amorphous. This is in agreement with the thermodynamic predictions that direct formation of mullite has not occurred during the aluminum nitrate - urea combustion reaction. XRD patterns of uniaxially pressed and sintered pellets at 1550 degrees C for 4 h revealed the crystal structure of orthorhombic mullite. The lattice parameters and unit cell volume increases as the mullite solid solutions were enriched by iron. The TGA/DSC analysis showed the reducing of crystallization temperature of iron doped mullites with increasing of iron content in reaction mixtures. The mullitization reaction is two-step process including formation of transient spinel phase below 1000 degrees C and mullite crystallization at temperatures about 1200 degrees C. The SEM micrographs of the sintered samples reveal elongated mullite grains with grain length up to 40 mu m. Increasing of the iron content in the reaction mixture enhances the grain size and the grains become elongated and better packed increasing the density of sintered samples. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. AB  - Hydroxyapatite is the most suitable biocompatible material for bone implant coatings. However, its brittleness is a major obstacle, and that is why, recently, research focused on creating composites with various biopolymers. In this study, hydroxyapatite coatings were modified with lignin in order to attain corrosion stability and surface porosity that enables osteogenesis. Incorporating silver, well known for its antimicrobial properties, seemed the best strategy for avoiding possible infections. The silver/hydroxyapatite (Ag/HAP) and silver/hydroxyapatite/lignin (Ag/HAP/Lig) coatings were cathaphoretically deposited on titanium from ethanol suspensions, sintered at 900 degrees C in Ar, and characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The corrosion stability of electrodeposited coatings was evaluated in vitro in Kokubos simulated body fluid (SBF) at 37 degrees C using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Bioactivity was estimated by immersion in SBF to evaluate the formation of hydroxyapatite on the coating surface. A microcrystalline structure of newly formed plate-shaped carbonate-hydroxyapatite was detected after only 7 days, indicating enhanced bioactive behavior. Both coatings had good corrosion stability during a prolonged immersion time. Among the two, the Ag/HAP/Lig coating had a homogeneous surface, less roughness, and low values of contact angle.

AB  - The photocatalytic degradation of the synthetic textile dye CI Basic Yellow 28 (BY28) in water, using a recently synthesized P160 TiO2-based catalyst, under Osram ultra-vitalux (R) lamp (300 W) light, was studied. The effects of the operational parameters, such as initial concentration of catalyst, initial dye concentration and pH, were studied. The salt effect (NaCl, Na2CO3, Na2SO4 and NaNO3) was also investigated. It was found that the optimal concentration of catalyst is 2.0 g L-1. A pseudo first-order kinetic model was illustrated using the Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism and the adsorption equilibrium constant and the rate constant of the surface reaction were calculated (K-By = 6.126 L mg(-1) and k(C) = 0.272 mg L-1 min(-1), respectively). The photodegradation rate was higher in weak acidic than in high acidic and alkaline conditions. The presence of CO32- ions increased the photodegradation rate while Cl-, SO42- and NO3- decreased the reaction rate. The rate of photodegradation of BY28 was measured using UV-Vis spectroscopy.

AB  - A method for the preparation of efficient TiO2/multi-wall carbon nanotubes nanocomposite photocatalysts by precipitation of anatase TiO2 nanoparticles onto differently oxidized carbon nanotubes is presented. The precursor compound titanium(IV) bromide was hydrolyzed producing pure anatase phase TiO2 nanoparticles decorated on the surface of the oxidized carbon nanotubes. The oxidative treatment of the carbon nanotubes influenced the type, quantity and distribution of oxygen-containing functional groups, which had a significant influence on the electron transfer properties, i.e., the photocatalytic activity of the synthesized nanocomposites. The results of C.I. Reactive Orange 16 photodegradation in the presence of all the synthesized nanocomposites showed their better photocatalytic activity in comparison to the commercial photocatalyst Degussa P-25. The aim of this work was to produce hydroxyapatite/lignin (HAP/Lig) coatings on titanium and to investigate the effect of the lignin concentration on microstructure, morphology, phase composition, thermal behavior and cytotoxicity of the HAP/Lig coatings. An organosolv lignin was used for the production of the composite coatings studied in this research. The properties of HAP/Lig coatings were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), as well as the MTT test of cytotoxicity. The results showed that higher lignin concentrations protected the HAP lattice during sintering, thereby improving the stability of the HAP/Lig coatings. The cell survival of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) after proliferation indicates that the HAP/Lig coating with 1 wt% Lig electrodeposited on titanium was non-toxic with significant promise as a potential bone-repair material. AB  - Monophase silver-doped hydroxyapatite (AgxCa10-x(PO4)(6)(OH)(2); 0.002 LT = x LT = 0.04) nanoparticles were prepared using a neutralization method and investigated with respect to potential medical applications. This method consists of dissolving Ag2O in solution of H3PO4, and the slow addition to suspension of Ca(OH)(2) was applied for the purpose of homogenous distribution of silver ions. Characterization studies from XRD, TEM and FTIR spectra showed that obtained crystals are monophase hydroxyapatites and that particles of all samples are of nano size, with average length of 70nm and about 15-25nm in diameter. Antimicrobial studies have demonstrated that all silver-doped hydroxyapatite samples exhibit excellent antimicrobial activity in vitro against the following pathogens: Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Candida albicans. The hydroxyapatite sample with the highest content of silver has shown the highest antimicrobial activity; killed all cells of E. coli and brought to more than 99% reduction in viable counts of S. aureus and C. albicans. The atomic force microscopic studies illustrate that silver-doped hydroxyapatite sample causes considerable morphological changes of microorganism cells which might be the cause of cells death. Hemolysis ratios of the silver-doped hydroxyapatite samples were below 3%, indicating good blood compatibility and that are promising as biomaterials. abstract = "Monophase silver-doped hydroxyapatite (AgxCa10-x(PO4)(6)(OH)(2); 0.002 LT = x LT = 0.04) nanoparticles were prepared using a neutralization method and investigated with respect to potential medical applications. This method consists of dissolving Ag2O in solution of H3PO4, and the slow addition to suspension of Ca(OH)(2) was applied for the purpose of homogenous distribution of silver ions. Characterization studies from XRD, TEM and FTIR spectra showed that obtained crystals are monophase hydroxyapatites and that particles of all samples are of nano size, with average length of 70nm and about 15-25nm in diameter. Antimicrobial studies have demonstrated that all silver-doped hydroxyapatite samples exhibit excellent antimicrobial activity in vitro against the following pathogens: Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Candida albicans. The hydroxyapatite sample with the highest content of silver has shown the highest antimicrobial activity; killed all cells of E. coli and brought to more than 99% reduction in viable counts of S. aureus and C. albicans. The atomic force microscopic studies illustrate that silver-doped hydroxyapatite sample causes considerable morphological changes of microorganism cells which might be the cause of cells death. Hemolysis ratios of the silver-doped hydroxyapatite samples were below 3%, indicating good blood compatibility and that are promising as biomaterials. Synthesis and characterization of monetite and hydroxyapatite whiskers obtained by a hydrothermal method

AB  - High temperature hydrothermal syntheses, using calcium nitrate tetrahydrate, sodium dihydrogen phosphate and urea as precursors, and characterization of hydroxyapatite (HAp) whiskers are reported herein. The morphology and chemical composition of the crystals from a monetite to a hydroxyapatite phase were controlled by varying the starting concentrations of the precursors and the solution pH through the amount of urea that is decomposed during heating. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, infrared spectroscopy (IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-resolution TEM (HRTEM) were used to investigate the products of the syntheses in order to find the optimum reaction conditions for obtaining the desired morphology and phase composition. Different morphologies ranging from single crystals of monetite through rods and plates of hydroxyapatite with different size distribution to whisker-like single hydroxyapatite crystal were achieved by simply varying the starting concentration of urea. Structural refinement of the hydroxyapatite whiskers confirmed a strong preferential orientation along the c-axis direction of the hexagonal crystal structure, which was significantly different from the usually observed random crystal orientation. TEM and SEM analysis of the apatite whiskers confirmed single crystal structure with the a c-axis orientation parallel to the long axis of the whiskers, with sizes up to 150 mu m in length, 10 mu m in width and with a thickness of about 300 nm, that grew from the same centre of nucleation, forming flaky-like particles.
