AB - The properties of W-Ti thin films/coatings deposited by sputtering on various substrates have been studied. Structural analyses were made by X-ray diffraction and scanning tunneling microscopy. The results have shown that the crystal structure of W-Ti coatings has the same structure as tungsten; the presence of titanium gave rise to the expansion of the alpha-tungsten lattice. Microstructural features-grain size and morphology-mean surface roughness depend on substrate properties and thickness of the coatings. For the same thickness of deposited coatings, different inicrostructure features have been obtained as a function of substrate structure. The mean surface roughness and the grain size increase with increasing thickness of deposits on the same substrate.

AB - In this work, the effect of physical parameters on the yield of fullerene, synthesized in a hollow cathode plasma reactor is investigated. The experimental investigations done previously have shown that the fullerene yield depended on tehcnical parameters - the current intensity, inert gas pressure, type of gas and interelectrode gap. The aim of this work was to show that the fullerene yield depends on physical parameters - carbon concentration, carbon flow rate from the interelectrode gap, axial temperature and temperature gradient between the. arc channel and the chamber walls as,well. It was found that fullerene synthesis occurs in an inert heat bath with dimensions determined by die temperature gradient. The lower temperature limit is around 2000 K and the value of the upper limit is die value of the axis temperature which depends on the discharge conditions. The synthesis of fullerenes is more effective if the carbon concentration in the heat bath is large and the carbon flow rate from that zone to colder parts of chamber is small.

AB - In this work, we present the results of a spectroscopic investigation of the emission from C-2 radicals of carbon arc in inert gas-helium. The rotational temperature Of C-2 radicals was determined in dependence of electrode-anode- diameter. It was found that the rotational temperature of diatomic carbon molecules decreased when electrode diameter decreased. The pressure dependence on rotational temperature has shown that the rotational temperature Of C-2 decreased with the increase of gas pressure.

AB - In this work, the interaction of a transversely excited atmospheric (TEA) CO2 laser with tungsten-titanium (W-Ti) alloy deposited on austenitic stainless steel is considered. The W-Ti alloy as a refractory material possesses very good physicochemical characteristics such as thermochemical stability and high melting temperature. Studying of interactions of different energetic particles or laser beams with W-Ti coatings has both application and fundamental importance. The morphological features of the W-Ti coating, deposited on austenitic stainless steel AISI 316, induced by a TEA CO2 laser after multipulse cumulative laser action, have been considered. The laser pulses with tail (FWHM = 120 ns, tail = 2 mus) and free-tail pulses (FWHM = 80 ns) have been employed. Laser pulses used in the experiment had equal peak power density I = 120 MWcm(-2). For the given peak power density, excessive surface changes on the coating were registered. From direct observation on a microscopic scale (OM, SEM), it can be concluded that W-Ti coatings show different behavior under laser irradiation with various temporal pulse shapes.

AB - When an energy-carrying beam strikes a solid surface, the surface is sputtered and many effects on the atomic, microscopic and macroscopic scale can be observed. The morphological changes induced on solid surfaces, the shape and size of damaged area depend on the beam and target characteristics. Laser beams are frequently used in modem technology to obtain materials with certain bulk properties and different surface properties. During the last years, then has been an interest for advanced technology application of implemented ceramic thin films/coatings deposited by various methods. In this work the microscopic changes induced by laser beam on TiN and (Ti,Al)N coatings deposited on steel were studied, For this purpose we used pulsed, Transversely Excited Atmospheric (TEA) CO2 laser, operating with typical and non-typical gas mixtures. The deposited coatings and laser-induced damage after 20-340 pulses were analyzed by X-ray, optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was shown that the morphological features and damages induced during the laser irradiation depend on the pulse shape, total deposited energy and type of targets. From direct observation on microscopic scale, it can be concluded that similar coatings TiN and (Ti,Al)N showed different behaviour under pulsed laser irradiation. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. AB - It kinetic model of the fullerene growth process in a contact are generator is developed. On the basis of the kinetic model, the yield of the magic fullerenes C-60 and C-70 is calculated. The fullerene yield is determined by the temperature gradient in the fullerene formation zone, the carbon vapor concentration and the helium jet velocity in the interelectrode space. We found that the upper boundary value of the magic fullerene yield was about 20%.

AB - This work reports on an analysis of titanium nitride layers deposited by the PVD method and changes induced in the deposit during interaction with a laser beam. Layers up to 850 nm thick were deposited by Ti target sputtering into an atmosphere of reactive gas. Layer phase composition, lattice parameter, interplanar spacing and preferential orientation of crystallites in the layer were investigated by X-ray diffraction analysis. The mean grain size and micro strain in the deposit were defined from peak line broadening in the CuK alpha spectrum. Crystallite size was defined additionally by scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM), before and after laser beam treatment.

AB - This work reports on the effect of post-deposition rapid thermal annealing on the structural and electrical properties of deposited TiB2 thin films. The TiB2 thin films, thicknesses from 9 to 450 nm, were deposited by e-beam evaporation on high resistivity and thermally oxidized silicon wafers. The resistivity of as-deposited films varied from 1820 mu Omega cm for the thinnest film to 267 mu Omega cm for thicknesses greater than 100 nm. In the thickness range from 100 to 450 nm, the resistivity of TiB2 films has a constant value of 267 mu Omega cm. A rapid thermal annealing (RTA) technique has been used to reduce the resistivity of deposited films. During vacuum annealing at 7 x 10(-3) Pa, the film resistivity decreases from 267 mu Omega cm at 200 degrees C to 16 mu Omega cm at 1200 degrees C. Heating cycles during RTA were a sequence of 10 s. According to scanning tunneling microscopy analysis, the decrease in resistivity may be attributed to a grain growth through polycrystalline recrystallization, as well as to an increase in film density. The grain size and mean surface roughness of annealed films increase with annealing temperature. At the same time, the conductivity of the annealed samples increases linearly with grain size. The obtained results show that RTA technique has a great potential for low resistivity TiB, formation. (C) 1997 Published by Elsevier Science S.A.

AB - The properties of TiB2 coatings deposited by direct electron-beam evaporation and by plasma spray deposition as well as their behavior during the interaction with the energetic beam are discussed. These coatings are considered as a plasma facing material for some parts of the next step tokamak. Sputtering yields were determined for: Ar+ ion bombardment in the energy region 3-12 keV and laser beam bombardment in the range up to 10(9) W/m(2). It was found that whatever the mechanism of sputtering is, a similarity between sputtering yield and energy dependence for used combinations of incident beams and target does exist.

AB - In this paper we present pulse deposition as a new method to favor the self-assembly of nanostructured materials. Nucleation and growth of gold thin layers deposited on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite substrate have been studied using scanning tunneling microscopy in air. Depositions were performed in a pulsed regime and, for comparison, continuously in time. Much higher cluster density and better arrangement of clusters are obtained for pulse deposition than for gold deposited continuously. The formation of the channel structure of the deposited layer is favored and achieved earlier. The results indicate that the number of surface defect sites increases with subsequent pulses, behavior attributed to the previously formed clusters taking on the role of surface defect sites.
