AB - Recently, there has been an increasing interest in developing nonaqueous electrolytes which have been widely employed as an alternative media for a range of metals and metal alloys electrodepositions. A promising and new class of electrolytes among ionic liquids (Ils) are deep eutectic solvents (DESs)1 . The purpose of the copper deposition study from DESs is the application of copper coating and copper alloys in both, industry and fundamental research. In this work, the electrochemical deposition of copper onto palladium working substrate from ChCl/EG (1:2 ratio) DES electrolyte at 50°C was investigated. Additionally, the Cu(II) electroreduction process was studied by potentiodynamic measurements, cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, in the electrolytes with different concentrations of Cu(II) ions ranging from 0.1 M to 0.5 M. The cyclic voltammetry results indicated that the bulk deposition of Cu(II) begins to occur at around –0.080 V vs. Cu. It was found that copper deposition onto the Pd cathode from ChCl:EG electrolyte under potentiostatic conditions is achievable. Data collected from X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis proved that the cathodic deposits are composed of Cu and CuPd intermetallic. CuPd alloys with different Pd-Cu ratios were prepared by constant potential of –0.100 V vs. Cu from ChCl/EG containing 0.1 M and 0.5 M Cu(II). It is worth noting that the Xray data indicated that the composition of the produced Pd-Cu films could be varied by changing the concentration of Cu(II) ions in the electrolyte or changing the deposition mode.

AB - In presented work, influence of temperature, starting material concentration and
different hydroxides on properties and morphology of activated carbon obtained
from saccharose were investigated. The samples were prepared by hydrothermal
treatment and activated using KOH, NaOH and LiOH. Two saccharose
concentrations (0.5, 1.0 mol/dm3
) and three different temperatures (160, 200, 240
°C) were changed in hydrothermal treatment. Activation processes were performed
at 750 °C under inert atmosphere. Obtained samples were characterized by X–ray
powder diffractometry, elemental analysis, N2 adsorption-desorption measurements,
Fourier–transform infrared spectrometry, scanning electron microscopy and thermal
analysis. The obtained samples were tested for potential application in dyes removal
(Methylene Blue and Methyl Orange) from water solutions.

AB - The influence of different hydroxides, applied to activate carbon black, on the electrochemical properties of activated carbon was investigated. The carbon material was prepared by hydrothermal treatment of sucrose and afterwards thermally activated using KOH, NaOH and LiOH. The electrochemical properties of the obtained samples were examined by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and correlated to their physicochemical properties. All samples showed characteristic capacitor-like behaviour. The highest specific capacitance was obtained for the KOH-treated sample, while the increase in capacitance follows the sequence of the growth of ionic radius of a metal from an alkali which is used for activation. It was found that the dependence on the type of hydroxide is due to differences in the radii of a metal. The alkalies of larger radii of metal generated make pores wider and consequently the structure of a porous layer become more accessible to the charge transfer of capacitive response.

AB - TiO2 powder was synthesized by a forced hydrolysis process and used for the synthesis of Pt/TiO2 composite that is to be foreseen as an advanced electrode material. Pt was incorporated into the synthesized TiO2 from a Pt colloidal dispersion as a precursor prepared by a microwave- assisted polyol process. Physicochemical properties of TiO2 and TiO2- supported Pt were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering and X- ray spectroscopy and diffraction techniques. The properties of Pt/TiO2 composite are correlated to the basic voltammetric response of its thin-layer form. It was found that subsequent thermal treatment of synthesized TiO2, which caused crystallization into mainly rutile phase, is required for appropriate Pt incorporation. Although being appropriately loaded by Pt, and the voltammetric response is typical for Pt-based material, the voltammetry of Pt/TiO2 corresponded to much lower loadings. The possibility for Pt particles to be trapped inside TiO2 agglomerates is indicated. The catalyst usage from the synthesized Pt/TiO2 was found quite moderate due to this trapping.

AB - The applicability of Peleg model was investigated for predicting mass transfer kinetics during the osmotic dehydration (OD) process of pears, at different concentrations (40, 60 and 70%, w/w) and temperatures (20, 35 and 50 degrees C) of sucrose solution. Increase in sucrose solution concentration resulted in higher water loss (WL) and solid gain (SG) values through the osmotic treatment period. After 360 min of osmotic treatment of pears, WL ranged from 23.71 to 31.68% at 20 degrees C, from 24.80 to 40.38% at 35 degrees C and from 33.30 to 52.07% at 50 degrees C of initial weight of pears. The increase of dry mass of the samples, SG, after 360 min of osmotic treatment ranged from 3.02 to 6.68% at 20 degrees C, from 4.15 to 7.71% at 35 degrees C and from 5.00 to 8.92% at 50 degrees C. Pelegs rate constants, k(1)(WL) and k(1)(SG), decreased with increasing temperature, as well as decreased with increasing concentration of osmotic solution at constant temperature. Both capacity constants k(2)(WL) and k(2)(SG) also exhibited the inverse relationship between capacity constant and temperature, as well as concentration of the osmotic solution. Pelegs rate constants for WL and SG at all temperatures followed an Arrhenius type relationship. The predicted equilibrium values were very close to experimental ones, which was confirmed with high coefficients of determination and by the residual analysis.
