AB - Different organic compounds in aquatic bodies have been recognized as an emerging issue in Environmental Chemistry. The gamma irradiation technique, as one of the advanced oxidation techniques, has been widely investigated in past decades as a technique for the degradation of organic molecules, such as dyes, pesticides, and pharmaceuticals, which show high persistence to degradation. This review gives an overview of what has been achieved so far using gamma irradiation for different organic compound degradations giving an explanation of the mechanisms of degradations as well as the corresponding limitations and drawbacks, and the answer to why this technique has not yet widely come to life. Also, a new approach, recently presented in the literature, regards coupling gamma irradiation with other techniques and materials, as the latest trend. A critical evaluation of the most recent advances achieved by coupling gamma irradiation with other methods and/or materials, as well as describing the reaction mechanisms of coupling, that is, additional destabilization of molecules achieved by coupling, emphasizing the advantages of the newly proposed approach. Finally, it was concluded what are the perspectives and future directions towards its commercialization since this technique can contribute to waste minimization i.e. not waste transfer to other media. Summarizing and generalization the model of radiolytic degradation with and without coupling with other techniques can further guide designing a new modular, mobile method that will satisfy all the needs for its wide commercial application.

AB - Worldwide water bodies have been affected by toxic effluents of industries, such as organic compounds, and are continuously deteriorating the environment as industrialization coupled with urbanization has caused the excess release of wastewater. Finding a proper wastewater treatment is of the greatest importance. Gamma irradiation technique, as one of the advanced oxidation techniques, has been widely investigated as a technique for degradation of organic molecules. It has been shown that this method has the potential to be effectively applied for degradation of toxic colorants which show high persistence to degradation. Although the literature abounds with degradation studies of different organic molecules using a wide range of irradiation dozes and doze rates, according to available data, no such irradiation facility exists, mostly due to high doses and expensive equipment needed to be installed. A mechanism of degradation was proposed: generated reactive species non-specifically react with organic compounds leading to their partial or complete degradation. In recent advances, gamma irradiation was coupled with other wastewater treatment technologies to reduce needed doses. Coupling of gamma irradiation was achieved with addition of oxidants which resulted in increased number of reactive species, then coupling with solid matrices, biological treatment, which all lead to additional destabilization of organic molecules. This way, combining different methods of wastewater purification opens new possibilities and may enable the design of a new modular, or even mobile, plant that will satisfy all the needs for its wide commercial application. As a result, a sustainable development goal can be more easily reachable, i.e., sustainable water resources management in future industrial zones and smart cities may be possible without generation of waste transfer into another media.

AB - This paper investigates the impact of negative bias temperature stress on irradiated commercial p-channel power VDMOS transistors, particularly focusing on gate oxide charge and interface trap alterations and their contribution to threshold voltage shifts. The study addresses the critical issue of transistor reliability, as threshold voltage shifts can significantly affect device performance, especially in elevated temperature and negative gate oxide field conditions. Additionally, the research explores the effects of irradiation on VDMOS power transistors, emphasizing the importance of understanding the associated electrical parameter changes. The paper presents a comprehensive analysis of static and pulsed NBT stressing, with a specific focus on novel stress signals encountered in practical applications. The experimental procedure involves irradiation and NBT stress, and the results reveal insights into the contributions of gate oxide charge and interface traps to threshold voltage shifts. The findings shed light on the reliability of electronic equipment incorporating p-channel power VDMOS transistors under various stress conditions, offering valuable insights for device design and operation.

AB - Malondialdehyde (MDA) is the end product of lipid peroxidation and biomarker of free radicals. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of honey on concentrations of MDA in plasma exposed to a therapeutic dose of radiation. In this experiment animals were divided into two groups: in CONTROL group the animals were given distilled water orally for 28 days, and HONEY group consisted of animals given 1,5 ml/kg honey orally for 28 days. Blood samples of both groups were collected from a rat's tail. All blood samples were exposed to radiation of 2 Gy. Malondialdehyde concentration in plasma was determined using spectrophotometric method. Honey treatment in the blood plasma exposed to a therapeutic dose of 2 Gy significantly decreased MDA level by 30 % compared with control group. The present results indicated that honey had an effect on the levels of MDA in plasma exposed to radiation.

AB - Well-type ionization chambers are routinely used for measurements in brachytherapy departments. Since there is no calibration service for brachytherapy ionization chambers available in Serbia, Secondary Standards Dosimetry Laboratory (SSDL) in Vinca Institute of Nuclear Sciences started establishing this service, using a reference well-type chamber Standard Imaging HDR-1000 plus with a PTW Unidos Webline electrometer. The outer wall of the chamber is made of 20 mm thick aluminum, which reduces the influence of the scattered radiation. For each source there is a unique source holder for placement in a reproducible geometry inside the well of the chamber. The ionization chamber stability has to be checked periodically to ensure reliable measurements. IAEA Technical Report Series (TRS) 1274 [IAEA TRS 1247, IAEA 2002] gives guidelines on standardized procedures at SSDLs and hospitals, including the procedure for stability checks of welltype chambers. According to this procedure, 137Cs or 60Co check sources are inserted in the chamber well, using spacers or holders to achieve reproducible geometry. Measurements during stability checks should remain within ±0.5%. In this research, a different procedure for stability checks was tested. A teletherapy 60Co irradiator was used for external irradiation of the well-type chamber. All measurements were corrected for air density (ambient temperature and pressure). Measurements were done in a minimum scatter environment, which was achieved by positioning the ionization chamber 1 m from the irradiator, with the field size of 20x20cm. Correction for 60Co half-life was applied to all measurements. First, the influence of the source holders was tested, and no significant differences were found (0.16% maximum difference when holder is placed in chamber, compared to no holder present). All the subsequent measurements were performed without source holders. During the second test, 4 stability checks were performed during a period of 4 days without moving the chamber or irradiator. The deviations were within the interval -0.39% – +0.25% compared to the first stability check measurement. During the third test, 7 stability checks were performed during a period of 7 days, and complete setup was repeated during each check (chamber positioning, bench positioning, collimator setup etc.). The purpose of the second test was to check the repeatability of positioning, because the positioning can artificially increase deviations between subsequent measurements, making the chamber stability appear worse. All the results were within the interval -0.17% – +0.27%. The results show that this procedure can be adequate for the stability checks of well-type chambers, because the repeatability due to the changes in measurement procedures setup is better than the 0.5%. Differences between second and third test could be caused by insufficient thermalization of the chamber during the second test.

AB - During the implementation of construction barrier design procedures for protection against gamma and X
radiation, the inevitable question arises of choosing building materials with suitable mechanical and radiation
characteristics for protective barriers. Based on engineering practice, it is necessary to compare different
types of concrete used for the construction of buildings in which there are sources of gamma and X radiation,
as in cases where radiation sources appear in medical institutions with linear accelerators, cyclotron
installations for the acceleration of nuclear particles, in the environment of nuclear reactors, in radioactive
waste warehouses or in radiation sterilization units. In the analysis of costs and benefits, several criteria are
used to evaluate the characteristics of concrete, so that, in addition to the mechanical ones, the radiation
characteristics of the building material are also taken into account. One of the most important characteristics
of radiation shielding concrete is its overall mass attenuation coefficient. In this paper, the XCOM computer
code was used to calculate the total mass attenuation coefficients in the energy range from 0.01 MeV to 100
MeV for three types of concrete: ultrahight properties concrete (UHPC), concrete with barite and concrete
with magnetite and steel. Based on the comparison of the calculation results, it was concluded that concrete
with magnetite and steel has a greater protective power than the other two types of concrete for gamma and X
radiation energy lower than 30 keV. Another important conclusion is that concrete with barite has a higher
protective power than the other two types of concrete in the photon energy range from 30 keV to 300 keV,
and for photon energy greater than 6 MeV. A detailed analysis of the calculation results revealed that in the
energy range from 400 keV to 6 MeV the values for the total mass attenuation coefficients are approximately
the same for three different types of concrete.

AB - Geopolymers are a class of alkali activated binders, and present a viable alternative to Portland cement. Utilization of geopolymers is a way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and utilize secondary materials.Geopolymers are becoming a material of choice in radioactive waste conditioning, for grouting and encapsulation. Binder set times are a key parameter in determining the workability of grouts, mortars and concrete. While studying the effects of ionizing radiation on geopolymer set times, we were constrained by the configuration of the irradiation device and field, so we developed a modified Vicat apparatus, sample case/phantom, and temperature/humidity monitor. The modified procedure has allowed for a better temporal resolution of the measurements, with continuous monitoring of the experimental conditions. Fly-ash geopolymer set times under Co-60 gamma radiation are presented.

AB - During the implementation of procedures for designing building barriers for protection against gamma and X radiation, the unavoidable question of choosing construction materials with appropriate mechanical and radiation characteristics for protective barriers arises. Based on engineering practice, it is necessary to compare different types of concrete used for the construction of facilities where there are sources of gamma and X radiation, such as in cases where radiation sources appear in medical facilities with linear accelerators, cyclotron installations for accelerating nuclear particles, in the environment of nuclear reactors, in radioactive waste storages, or in radiation sterilization unit s. In the cost-benefit analysis, several criteria are used to evaluate the characteristics of the concrete, so that in addition to the mechanical characteristics, the radiation characteristics of the construction material are also considered. One of the most important characteristics of concrete for radiation protection is its total mass attenuation coefficient. In this paper, computer code XCOM was used for the calculation of the total mass attenuation coefficients in energy range from 0.01MeV to 100 MeV for three types of concrete: ordinary concrete, concrete with barite and concrete with limonite and steel. Based on the comparison of calculation results, it was concluded that concrete with limonite and steel has greater protective power than other two concrete types for the gamma and X radiation energy less than 30 keV. The second important conclusion is that the concrete with barite has greater protective power than other two concrete types in the range of photon energy from 30 keV to 300 keV, and for photon energy greater than 6 MeV. A detailed analysis of the calculation results found that in the energy range of 400 keV to 6 MeV values for the total mass attenuation coefficients are approximately the same for three different types of concrete.

AB - An improved RADFET based module dosemeter has been developed by Varadis (a spin out company of Tyndall National Institute in Cork, Ireland) with serial number RM-VT01-A. The module is based on commercially available, commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) parts and represents an updated version of its predecessor RM-VT01 with an upper dose limit of 10Gy (1 kRad) also based on COTS parts. The RM-VT01-A module was tested to a total dose of 1kGy (100 kRad) in Co60 field at Vinča Institute of Nuclear Sciences, Belgrade, Serbia. The improved module circuit was specifically designed to address the challenge of withstanding 1 kGy (100 kRad) received dose. The primary goal of this poster is to present the improvements in the circuit design and working principle. For this purpose, eleven modules were tested, 8 powered and 3 unpowered during irradiation. The module electronics accommodates both irradiation “sense” and readout “single-current-point” mode, outputting the RADFET threshold voltage (VT) as a dosimetric information, directly proportional to the absorbed dose. The output voltage of the module was measured with a simple benchtop voltmeter to demonstrate module operation simplicity and easy system integrability. The experimental data results showed excellent agreement with the dosimetry system used at the Vinca irradiation facility, and calibration data of the VT01 RadFET part.

AB - Compared to traditional concrete, self-compacting concrete (SCC) demonstrates greater flowability, which is achieved by including an extra high percentage of ultra-fine particles. As a result, the required high paste content is obtained while the cement content is strictly limited. The coal combustion byproduct (fly ash) is one of the most efficient SCC fillers because it extends the lifecycle of SCC by improving its microstructural properties, strength, and durability. In this study, the amounts of fly ash in SCC compositions varied. The changes in physical and mechanical characteristics of fresh SCC samples related to variations in the water/binder ratio were monitored

AB - The impacts of nano-silica addition, steel micro-reinforcement, and aggregate type on the mechanical properties and durability of ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) were studied. As aggregates, quartz and barite were used. The amounts of steel fibers and nanosilica were alternated. Six concrete mixes were produced with quartz sand, and the remaining six concrete mixes were designed with barite sand. Fibers made about 3-5% of the concrete composition’s mass. In a 2-5% concentration, nano-silica was used as a cement replacement. The inclusion of nano-silica significantly boosted the compressive strength of UHPC. The compressive and flexural strengths were also positively impacted by fiber supplementation ranging from 3% to 5%. The amount of fiber utilized proved to be more influential than the aggregate used. The UHPC concrete's durability was increased as all samples were highly resistant to freezing and thawing cycles. UHPC designed with barite aggregate demonstrated good X and gamma ray absorption at energies below 300 keV.

AB - The possibility of using commercial p-channel power vertical double-diffused metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (VDMOSFETs) as X-ray sensors is investigated in this case study. In this aspect, the dependence of sensitivity on both the gate voltage and the mean energy for three X-ray beams is examined. The eight gate voltages from 0 to 21 V are applied, and the dependence of the sensitivity on the gate voltage is well fitted using the proposed equation. Regarding X-ray energy, the sensitivity first increases and then decreases as a consequence of the behavior of the mass energy-absorption coefficients and is the largest for RQR8 beam. As the mass energy-absorption coefficients of SiO2 are not found in the literature, the mass energy-absorption coefficients of silicon are used. The behavior of irradiated transistors during annealing at room temperature without gate polarization is also considered.

AB - Introduction. The approach to increase the sensitivity of semiconductor radiation dosimeter with a stacked design was presented for the thick oxide pMOS transistors, also known as RadFETs (A. Kelleher et al., IEEE transactions on nuclear science 42, 1995). The sensitivity is increasing with the number of RadFETs in stacked structure, but there were limitations because of the diode reverse breakdown voltage during readout current (B. O’Connell et al., In Proceedings of the Third European Conference on Radiation and its Effects on Components and Systems, 1995). Further improvement of the stacked RadFETs device enables detecting a minimum absorbed dose of less than 50 Gy for a 20 V power supply (B. O’Connell et al., Fifth European Conference on Radiation and Its Effects on Components and Systems, 1999). Floating gate MOSFET is a modified structure of MOSFET with another polysilicon gate surrounded by oxide. The advantages of the floating gate MOSFET as a radiation dosimeter are that it does not require thick oxide fabrication and the highest sensitivity is for the zero-bias at the control gate during irradiation (S. Ilić et al., Sensors 20 (11), 2020). Experimental setup. Commercial floating gate MOSFETs designed by Advanced Linear Devices Inc. were used in this paper. Four transistors were connected in the stacked structure (drain and control gate are shorted and connected to the source of the next stacked transistor), and their threshold voltage drift values were measured before and after each irradiation portion with the same conditions. The experiment was performed at the Institute of Nuclear Sciences “Vinča”, Belgrade, Serbia. Radiation source Co-60 was used for irradiation of the components, with the following portions of the absorbed dose (Si): 10 Gy, 10 Gy, 10 Gy, 20 Gy, 50 Gy, 400 Gy, 500 Gy, 4 mGy, 45 mGy, 50 mGy, respectively (absorbed dose was 100 mGy in total). All measurements were performed in a test fixture with triax cables by Keithley 2636A Source Measure Unit. During irradiation, all stacked transistors were zero-biased. Results. Observing the threshold voltage drift of the four stacked floating gate MOS transistors, we noticed that the stack of two transistors has the most stable reading values over time (smallest drift). Considering this, we analyzed only two stacked floating gate MOS transistors as a passive dosimeter for the low doses. The results show that it is possible to detect the first portion of 10 Gy at which the sensitivity of the two stacked transistors is 23 V/Gy. For the next same portion, the sensitivity is 17 V/Gy, while for the third, the value is 7 V/Gy. However, for the next 20 Gy, there is a tiny shift, and the sensitivity is only 1 V/Gy. Decreased sensitivity with absorbed dose is a feature of the floating gate MOSFET that has been observed before for much higher doses (S. Ilić et al., Sensors 20 (11), 2020). There is a large overlap in the threshold voltage drift values for the next four radiation portions. However, for the last two largest portions, 45 and 50 mGy, there is a significant threshold voltage shift with no overlapping, and thus it is possible to determine the sensitivity of 0.0226 and 0.0214 V/Gy, respectively. Conclusions. Using a floating gate MOSFET as a low-dose passive dosimeter is possible, but recharging the floating gate and reusing this device for higher total ionizing doses should be investigated.

To further illustrate the impacts of thesestresses on the power devices, the relative contributions of gate oxide charge (Not) and interfacetraps (Nit) to threshold voltage shifts are shown and studied. The novelty of the invention is implementation of the second and third phases of the method. It is necessary to constructively adopt the valves to correspond to the electric motor, ie. operating modes of refrigeration units.

AB - The energy that comes from the source of ionizing radiation is enormous and quite
unused. Using energy from ionizing radiation is a novel concept, while so far in the
literature (to the best of our knowledge), only beta radiation has been treated as a
possible source of energy (Quenon 2021). This paper focuses on utilizing gamma
radiation energy using the Cobalt-60 radiation source. Direct conversion of radiation into electrical energy is possible using pn or pin junction-based semiconductor
structures. When high-energy photons hit a semiconductor structure, a built-in
electric field of pn junction can separate the generated electron-hole pairs before
they recombine, creating the potential difference at the component electrodes. The
PIN diodes used in this paper were made in planar technology, with three different
active area surfaces: 0.8, 5 and 80 mm2
, at the Center of Microelectronic Technologies, Institute of Chemistry, Technology and Metallurgy, University of Belgrade,
Serbia. The experiment was conducted in controlled laboratory conditions at the
Department of Radiation and Environmental Protection at the Vinča Institute of
Nuclear Sciences, Belgrade, Serbia. The range of gamma radiation dose rates for
which the PIN diodes have been tested is from 1 µGy/h to 10 Gy/h under controlled
conditions at room temperature. It is necessary for the diode to operate in a photovoltaic mode to act as a current source in an electrical circuit. Therefore, during irradiation, the characteristics of diodes: short-circuit current and open-circuit voltage
were measured as the most important parameters of the current source. The lowest
detected dose rate value of the PIN diode with the largest active area (80 mm2
) was
5 mGy/h, while diodes with middle (5 mm2
) and the smallest active area (0.8 mm2
)
were 100 mGy/h. The short-circuit current values of PIN diodes for all active area dimensions have a linear dependence with a given dose rate range. By calculating the
short-circuit current density, we obtain that diodes with different active areas have
almost the same dependence on the dose rate. This result indicates that the current
generated under the ionizing radiation directly depends on the size of the active
region of the PIN diode. On the other hand, open-circuit voltage values do not have
a linear dependence on the dose rate, even the diode with the smallest active area
(0.8 mm2
) has higher values than the diode with the middle active area (5 mm2
).
For the highest dose rate (10 Gy/h), the short-circuit current value of the PIN diode
with the largest active area is 37 nA, and the open-circuit voltage is 118 mV, which
can enable power supply of the low power electric circuits by connecting diodes in
series and parallel. The research should continue in order to develop a self-powered
circuit that will monitor radioactive sources and their environment.
