AB - In this study non-isothermal non-oxidative and oxidative TG analysis was applied as a method for determining the thermal stability of the total lipids extracted from raw and maturing intramuscular tissue of fallow deer (Cervus Dama Dama L.). The total lipids were extracted from intramuscular tissue, according to the Folch method and stored for nine months at +4 and -18 degrees C. The changes in the thermal stability of the total lipids during non-oxidative and oxidative TG analysis were correlated with the lipid composition, i.e. fatty acid composition. The Flynn-Wall method was used to determine the values of the activation energy of thermal degradation of the total lipids in a defined mass loss range.

AB - Thermogravimetry, TG, of lipids is an appropriate analytical method, commonly used to correlate the kinetic parameters of the thermal degradation of lipids and their composition. Thus, samples of total lipids extracted from the raw fatty tissue of fallow deer were subjected to non-oxidative and oxidative TG analysis. The samples were previously stored for nine months at +4 degrees C and -18 degrees C. The material stability was investigated in order to establish the most favorable conditions for the production and storage of different foods. The total lipids were extracted according to the Folch method. The identification and quantitative analysis of the methyl esters of the fatty acids of the total lipids were performed by capillary gas chromatography. Based on the non-oxidative and oxidative TG results, the activation energies of the thermal degradation and oxidation of the total lipids extracted from different samples of fatty tissue were determined. The Doyle-Gorbachev method was used for the calculations.

AB - In this work the synthesis of a crosslinked macroporous copolymer was effected from methyl methacrylate and acrylamide. The synthesis process began with emulsion prepolymerization, followed by sol-gel copolymerization until a hard block was obtained. Determination of the properties of the obtained material was carried out by FTIR, mercury porosimetry, and SEM microscopy. The material was characterized by a porous structure with open pores. The macroporous copolymer obtained can be used for polymer-analog reactions and the transformation of amide and ester groups into acyl azide groups. It can be used as a hard inert support for the immobilization of enzymes, or other proteins, by condensation of acyl azide group on poly-mer with the free amino group from the base amino acid of enzyme/protein. For the immobilization of microorganisms it can be used by vacuum diffusion of microorganism suspension into the porous structure, without active group transformation reactions. With microorganisms in the polymer pores, microorganism colonies form within the copolymer by microbial fermentation. (C) 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 91: 387-395, 2004.

AB - Simulation of the first cycle of the DEPA-TOPO process of uranium recovery from wet-process phosphoric acid with mixer-settler contactors operated in a counter-current (CTC), cross-current (CSC) and an alternative extraction-stripping (AES) flow arrangement (FA) was done. The simulation was performed for the cases when the equilibrium relationships are linear in the extraction and stripping section as well as non-linear in the stripping section. In order to get the equilibrium relationships, the DEPA-TOPO process was simulated in separation funnels using representative phosphoric acid samples taken from a fertilizer company. The Murphree stage efficiencies (for the extraction section for the aqueous phase, EMx, and for the stripping section EMx(s)) were taken into account in the model. As far as the recovery is concerned, CSCFA is better than other FAs. The same number of stages in the extraction and the stripping section is better than other combinations if the total number of stages is constant. For the CTCFA, there is an optimum of the organic-to-aqueous flow rate. This value depends on the extraction and stripping isotherms slopes (E and E-s coefficients, EMx and EMx(s) stage efficiencies, and, in the case of non-linear stripping isotherm, on the inlet uranium concentration).

AB - Powder of alpha-Fe2O3 was mechanochemically treated in a planetary ball mill in an air atmosphere. Structural changes were followed by X-ray diffraction analysis, magnetization measurements and differential scanning calorimetry after various milling times. It was found that complete transformation of alpha-Fe2O3 to Fe3O4 is possible during milling in an air atmosphere under appropriate milling conditions. Presumably, the decrease in the oxygen partial pressure during milling has a critical influence on promoting the dissociation of alpha-Fe2O3. Before nucleation of the Fe3O4 phase, the crystallites of the alpha-Fe2O3 phase are reduced to a minimal size accompanied by the introduction of atomic-level strain. Local modeling of a collision event, coupled with a classical thermodynamic assessment of the Fe2O3-Fe3O4 system, were used to rationalize the experimental results. It is proposed that the mechanochemical reactions proceed at the moment of impact by a process of energization and freezing of highly localized sites of a short lifetime. Excitation on a time scale of similar to 10(-5) s corresponds to a temperature rise of the order of (1-2) x 10(3) K. Decay of the excited state occurs rapidly at a mean cooling rate higher than 10(6) K s(-1). (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.
