Transfer of (137) Cs from soil to plants in different types of soils

The results of the long-term investigations of Cs-137 transfer from soil to plants in different types of soil are presented. The investigations were carried out the region of Mt. Tara (1280m) and Mt. Sara (2000m). The activity of Cs-137 in the samples of soils and plants was determined on an HPGe detector by standard gamma spectrometry. Three types of soils were examined: shale, limestone and a mixed one, and some plants: grass, meadow flora, pinewood, blueberries, an endemic species of Mt. Sara, moss and lichen. The calculated transfer factors were in the range of 0.1-2.0 due to the type of soils and plants (3.0-10.0 for moss and lichen). The vertical distribution of Cs-137 in the first 15 cm of soils indicates the slow migration of Chernobyl cesium through soils except on riversides due to the washout effect. Generally, the concentration of Cs-137 in soils strongly depends on the configuration of the terrain.
