Abstract
Polycrystailline samples of the cubic SmxY2-xO3 solid solutions (x = 0 2, 0.5. 1 0, 1 4, 1.7 and 2.0) were prepared and analyzed by the XRD and magnetic susceptibility measurements. Random distribution of Sm3+ ions between 24d and 8b site was found. except for diluted samples (x = 0.2 and 0 5). where Sm3+ ions preferentially occupy 24d site. The susceptibility data was analyzed within 2-150 K range according to the second order perturbation (Van Vleck equation) The strength of exchange interactions was estimated from low-temperature susceptibility within 2-20 K (effective g-value and Curie-Weiss temperature) The effective g-value and the Curie-Weiss temperature theta for Sm2O3 were found to be 0.451 and -3.97 K, respectively (C) 2009 Elsevier B V.
