Apolipoprotein E gene DNA polymorphism in Serbian population

Abstract
The study estimates the distribution of apoE alleles in Serbian population (622 persons) by restriction isotyping of the amplified apoE gene sequence and MADGE analysis. The E2 allele frequency estimated here (0.149) is one of the highest ever reported. A lowering in E4 frequency (0.115) compensates the increasing in E2 allele frequency. The E3 allele frequency remains comparable to Frequencies reported in other white populations. The frequency pattern of apoE alleles follows the same trend as one observed in other Caucasian European populations where the E3 allele is the most frequent (0.736). The low prevalence of E4 allele (0.114) was in agreement with underexpression of E4 in Southern Europe, compared to northern regions.
