Non-coding RNA and cholesteatoma

AB  - Objective Cholesteatoma is a challenging chronic pathology of the middle ear for which pharmacologic therapies have not been developed yet. Cholesteatoma occurrence depends on the interplay between genetic and environmental factors while master regulators orchestrating disease progression are still unknown. Therefore, in this review, we will discuss the diagnostic and therapeutic potential of non-coding RNAs (ncRNA) as a new class of regulatory molecules. Methods We have comprehensively reviewed all articles investigating ncRNAs, specifically micro RNAs (miRNAs) and long ncRNAs (lncRNA/circRNA) in cholesteatoma tissue. Results Candidate miRNA approaches indicated that miR-21 and let-7a are the major miRNAs involved in cholesteatoma growth, migration, proliferation, bone destruction, and apoptosis. Regulatory potential for the same biological processes was also observed for miR-203a. The NF-kB/miR-802/PTEN regulatory network was in relation to observed miR-21 activity in cholesteatoma as well. High throughput approaches revealed additional ncRNAs implicated in cholesteatoma pathology. Competitive endogenous RNA (ceRNA) analysis highlighted lncRNA/circRNA that could be “endogenous sponge” for miR-21 and let-7a based on the hypothesis that RNA transcripts can communicate with and regulate each other by using shared miRNA response elements. Conclusion In this review, we summarize the discoveries and role of ncRNA in major pathways in cholesteatoma and highlight the potential of miRNA-based therapeutics in the treatment of cholesteatoma. Photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue under natural sunlight using iron titanate nanoparticles prepared by a modified sol–gel method

AB  - The aim of this work was to synthesize semiconducting oxide nanoparticles using a simple method with low production cost to be applied in natural sunlight for photocatalytic degradation of pollutants in waste water. Iron titanate (Fe2TiO5) nanoparticles with an orthorhombic structure were successfully synthesized using a modified sol–gel method and calcination at 750°C. The as-prepared Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles exhibited a moderate specific surface area. The mesoporous Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles possessed strong absorption in the visible-light region and the band gap was estimated to be around 2.16 eV. The photocatalytic activity was evaluated by the degradation of methylene blue under natural sunlight. The effect of parameters such as the amount of catalyst, initial concentration of the dye and pH of the dye solution on the removal efficiency of methylene blue was investigated. Fe2TiO5 showed high degradation efficiency in a strong alkaline medium that can be the result of the facilitated formation of OH radicals due to an increased concentration of hydroxyl ions.

Denture composite reinforced with short polyethylene terephthalate fibers

AB  - Polymer matrix composite materials have found application in dentistry because of good mechanical properties, aesthetic, easy processing, and possibilities of the repair. Acrylates are materials used to make and repair dentures. Reinforcements in the form of short glass or polymer fibers are added to improve the mechanical properties of dental polymers. In this study, the processing of composite material with a polymer matrix from commercial auto-polymerized acrylate Simgal, with reinforcement in the form of short poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) fibers was examined. Samples were processed in three series: pure Simgal, Simgal/PET 1 wt% and Simgal/PET 3 wt%. The influence of the reinforcement in the form of short PET fibers on the mechanical properties of composite materials was investigated. Strength and hardness were tested by impact testing and Vickers microhardness, and it was shown that there is an increase in absorbed energy and hardness. The modulus was reduced by the addition of PET fibers and by increasing the amount of fibers in the composite. The increase in the amount of PET fibers also resulted in a smaller loss of surface mass of the samples compared to the pure matrix by 63% and 93%, respectively. Cavitation test revealed better cavitation resistance of composites than the pure acrylate.

AB  - Silica particles were obtained from rice husk to which layered double hydroxide particles were deposited (weight ratio 1 : 1). Fe2+-Al3+ layered double hydroxides (FeAl-LDH) were synthesized by co-precipitation with ratios Fe : Al of 3 : 1 in the presence of SiO2 particles from the rice husk. Characterization of the synthesized FeAl-LDH@SiO2 particles was performed by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy with EDS. Prepared FeAl-LDH@SiO2 particles were used as reinforcing agents in 1, 3 and 5 wt% quantity in poly (methyl) methacrylate matrix. The aim of this study was to examine whether FeAl-LDH@SiO2 particles affect the mechanical properties of polymer composite materials. The morphology of the composites was examined using a field emission scanning electron microscope. Microindentation, tensile and impact testing determined the mechanical properties of the obtained composites.

AB  - Vaccination is one of the greatest achievements in biomedical research preventing death and morbidity in many infectious diseases through the induction of pathogen-specific humoral and cellular immune responses. Currently, no effective vaccines are available for pathogens with a highly variable antigenic load, such as the human immunodeficiency virus or to induce cellular T-cell immunity in the fight against cancer. The recent SARS-CoV-2 outbreak has reinforced the relevance of designing smart therapeutic vaccine modalities to ensure public health. Indeed, academic and private companies have ongoing joint efforts to develop novel vaccine prototypes for this virus. Many pathogens are covered by a dense glycan-coat, which form an attractive target for vaccine development. Moreover, many tumor types are characterized by altered glycosylation profiles that are known as “tumor-associated carbohydrate antigens”. Unfortunately, glycans do not provoke a vigorous immune response and generally serve as T-cell-independent antigens, not eliciting protective immunoglobulin G responses nor inducing immunological memory. A close and continuous crosstalk between glycochemists and glycoimmunologists is essential for the successful development of efficient immune modulators. It is clear that this is a key point for the discovery of novel approaches, which could significantly improve our understanding of the immune system. In this review, we discuss the latest advancements in development of vaccines against glycan epitopes to gain selective immune responses and to provide an overview on the role of different immunogenic constructs in improving glycovaccine efficacy.

Potential application of low molecular weight excipients for amorphization and dissolution enhancement of carvedilol

Increase of hydrophobic surface area caused by milling of samples with TRY and PHE and agglomeration during dissolution testing of samples containing SAC are likely causes of poor dissolution performance of mixtures containing fully or partially amorphous CRV.

AB  - As a renewable resource, starch is considered to be fully biodegradable and nonpolluting to the environment but the hygroscopicity of starch is the main disadvantage for wider applicability in the production of a polymer-based material. Hydrophobically modified starch prepared using natural-based plasticizers/modifiers in a first step ([-]-diisopropyl D-tartrate [DiPT], ricinoleic acid [RA] and epoxidized soybean oil [ESO]), and maleated polypropylene (MAPP) in a second step contributed to better compatibility, and thus reinforcing of composites. Tailored processing conditions, structural/morphological properties, hydrophobicity, and water-resistance of the modified starch were established. In addition, the Charpy impact and tensile strength of composites, based on poly(ethylene-co-acrylic acid) (EAA) and modified starches, were determined. Increased tensile strength and Young modulus of the composite using starch-modified with DiPT-MAPP, that is, 3 and 83%, respectively, indicated the possible applicability of obtained materials.

Tag Variants of LGALS-3 Containing Haplotype Block in Advanced Carotid Atherosclerosis

AB  - ObjectivesGalectin-3 affects a variety of biological processes. It is encoded by LGALS-3, located in unique haplotype block in Caucasians. Most of the studies regarding the gal-3 role in atherosclerosis are focused exclusively on protein/mRNA levels. Genetic analyses of LGALS-3 are scarce. We sought to thoroughly examine the genetic background of gal-3 and to analyze tag variants that cover more than 80% variability of the LGALS-3 containing hap-block in association with carotid plaque presence (CPP). According to Tagger server, rs4040064 G/T, rs11628437 G/A and rs7159490 C/T cover 82% (r2 > 0.8) of the genetic variance of this hap-block. Our aims were to investigate possible association of rs4040064, rs11628437 and rs7159490 haplotypes with CPP in patients with advanced carotid atherosclerosis (CA) and to analyze their possible effect on LGALS-3 mRNA expression in carotid plaques.Materials and methodsStudy group consisted of 468 patients and 296 controls. Rs4040064, rs11628437, rs7159490 and LGALS-3 mRNA expression were detected by TaqMan® technology.ResultsWe have found that haplotype TAC was associated with the cerebrovascular insult (CVI) occurrence (OR = 1.68, 95% CI = 1.09-2.58, p = 0.02), compared to the referent haplotype. OR was adjusted for hypertension, age and BMI. TAC also showed higher, but not statistically significant, LGALS-3 expression in carotid plaques.ConclusionsOur results suggest that rs4040064, rs11628437 and rs7159490 bear no association with CPP, neither they affect LGALS-3 mRNA in carotid plaques. However, we showed a significant association of haplotype TAC with the CVI occurrence in CA patients from Serbia. Replication and validation of our results are required.

AB  - The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of binary Sr, Mg ion-doping compared to the single-ion doping effects on the phase composition and morphology of hydrothermally obtained calcium hydroxyapatite (HAP) powders and on the phase composition, microstructure, and mechanical properties of the sintered materials. Additionally, the focus of this study was to investigate the possible utilization of the binary doped Sr,Mg-HAP compacts as dentin substitutes in restorative dentistry by evaluating their bonding ability with commercially available restorative materials using the shear bond strength test (SBS). The hydrothermally obtained mono-doped Mg5 and Sr5 showed the monophasic apatite structure, while in all co-doped samples β-TCP phase was formed, resulting in biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) powders. It was confirmed that co-doping with Sr and Mg ions led to the thermal stabilization of the β-TCP phase by suppressing the phase transition into α-TCP when sintered at 1200 °C. Moreover, the co-presence of Mg ions significantly improved the hardness of Sr-doped HAP from 3.74 to 5.02 GPa. Sr,Mg-HAP dental inserts were found to achieve sufficient bonding (13.53 MPa) through the micromechanical interlocking with Z250 dental composite and Single Bond Universal dental adhesive applied with a total etch approach. The SBS values obtained for the SrMg-HAP insert were similar to the literature data on bonding ability with human dentin, indicating that binary doped Sr,Mg-HAP ceramics present a promising material for application in restorative dentistry as dentin substitutes.

AB  - Titanium-nitride (TiN) is known as a very promising plasmonic material, which offers many advantages compared to conventional metals commonly used in practical devices. Despite many improvements, TiN still suffers from high losses in the near-infrared (NIR) spectral region, making it less suitable for real-life applications. In this study, we have investigated the effects of pure silver implanted as well as silver/gold co-implanted TiN thin films on their optical properties, which we analyzed by spectroscopic ellipsometry. We demonstrate that the presence of silver and gold drastically changes both the real and imaginary part of the dielectric function. The implanted films exhibit optical losses several times lower compared to as-deposited TiN. The changes are in particular more pronounced for the samples with Au/Ag co-implantations, reaching nearly the same optical values as those of pure gold and being only slightly larger than that of silver. Thus, such an optical tuning of TiN opens new horizons and provide high potential for its implementation into plasmonic applications.

AB  - 15 µm thick Ti-Sapphire coatings were synthesised at room temperature by the plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) method for 20 min from the pure aluminium substrate and with the addition of the TiO2 particles in various concentrations in the supporting electrolyte. The coatings are featured by microscopic pores typical for PEO surfaces. The dominant is the alpha phase of alumina with the small presence of the gamma phase. The estimated average crystalline size is 41 nm. Ti is uniformly distributed in these polycrystalline ceramic coatings and does not affect morphology or phase content. Photoluminescence of PEO-created coatings shows typical absorption, excitation, and emission features of Ti-Sapphire with two broad-overlapping excitation bands in the green and blue spectral region due to the Jahn-Teller splitting of the 2Eg level and the Stokes shifted emission centred at 720 nm. 2Eg energy state splitting is equal to 2195 cm−1 and 10 Dq ≈ 19,300 cm−1. The highest emission intensity was observed in the coating prepared with the 0.1 g/L TiO2 powder concentration, i.e. 0.32 at% of incorporated Ti3+. Emission spectra recorded at temperatures ranging from 100 K to 300 K revealed the Mott-Seitz temperature dependence of emission intensity with the 1180 cm−1 activation energy. The fit to the McCumber-Sturge relation gave, for the first time, the value of Debye temperature of 594 K of Al2O3:Ti. Non-contact, luminescence temperature sensing from the temperature-induced changes in the emission bandwidth gave a high sensitivity of 3.2 cm−1 K−1 and 0.19 K temperature resolution. The PEO created Ti-sapphire coatings are a promising multifunctional barrier level – optical temperature sensor material for applications in harsh environments or on large aluminium surfaces. It shows potential to be used as a planar waveguide Ti-Sapphire laser active medium.

Highly sensitive temperature reading from intensity ratio of Eu3+ And Mn4+emissions in Y3Al5O12 nanocrystals

AB  - Potential of Eu3+, Mn4+ co-doped YAG for dual-activated luminescence intensity ratio thermometry is investigated. The samples were prepared by modified Pechini method and cubic structure confirmed by X-ray diffraction with average crystallite size of ∼ 20 nm. Scanning electron microscopy revealed different sized chunks composed of ellipsoidal-shaped particles bellow 50 nm. Temperature-dependent photoluminescent emission spectra (λex = 465 nm, 98–473 K temperature range) of co-doped samples consist of emission bands in the red spectral region originating from both Eu3+and Mn4+transitions. Concentration of Mn4+ and Eu3+ is optimized to be 0.5mol% and 3mol%. Observed suppression of Eu3+ emission indicate an efficient (∼97%) energy transfer from Eu3+ to Mn4+. Using luminescence intensity ratio as the ratio between the integrated intensities of the Eu3+ 5D0→7F1 transition and the Mn4+ 2E→4A2 manyfold, maximal absolute and relative sensitivities of SAmax = 19.2mK−1 at 351 K and SRmax = 5.06%K − 1 at 321 K were calculated.

Structural, morphological, optical, and electronic properties of amorphous non-doped and I and Sn doped Sb2S3 nanoparticles

AB  - Amorphous non-doped, iodine- and tin-doped Sb2S3 nanoparticles were prepared via the hot-injection method. HRTEM of amorphous undoped and doped samples revealed the formation of spherical nanoparticles of 20–50 nm diameter aggregated into clusters in the size of 100–200 nm. EDX analysis indicated the presence of desired elements in all observed samples. The bandgaps of non-doped and doped samples were determined from the reflectance spectra, and variations of the bandgaps, even small ones, are insufficient indications of doping. These uncertainties are further clarified by investigating crystalline undoped and doped samples in addition to the amorphous ones. XRPD results of the amorphous samples confirmed the amorphous structure, while Le Bail refinements of the crystalline samples show well-defined peaks from only the Sb2S3 phase, indicating a successful doping process. XPS measurements revealed that the phase of the undoped sample is free of impurities and that 3 d peaks of iodine and tin in the doped samples are present. The XPS valence bands shifted towards higher (I) or lower (Sn) binding energies compared to the undoped samples for both amorphous and crystalline samples, which is an additional support that incorporation of dopant ions in the Sb2S3 lattice took place.

AB  - Di(meth)acrylate (D(M)A) systems with pendant oligo(ethylene glycol) (OEG) chains are promising biomedical candidates. Homopolymeric P(OEG)D(M)A hydrogels have significant thermoresponsiveness demonstrated mainly at elevated temperatures which makes this class of materials unsuitable for bio-applications. Copolymerisation with less hydrophilic 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) was performed in an effort to shift volume phase transition (VPT) closer to physiological temperatures and to widen their application as thermoresponsive materials. Various monomer-solvent mixtures, consisting of different mole ratios of OEGDMA and HEMA monomers (100/0, 50/50, 27.5/72.5, and 12.5/87.5) and water/ethanol as solvent, were exposed to gamma radiation up to 6, 12, 25, and 50 kGy. Furthermore, in an attempt to obtain multi- (thermo- and pH-) responsive hydrogels for biomedical applications new P(OEGDMA/HEMA/IA) terpolymers containing a small share (2.5, and 5 wt%) of itaconic acid (IA) were synthesised. The successful fabrication of the hydrogels was confirmed by gel measurements and FTIR spectroscopy. Swelling measurements indicated that obtained networks possessed tuneable thermal behaviour and swelling properties which could be significantly altered by hydrogel composition. The porous architecture was investigated using SEM, confirming swelling results. Cytotoxicity revealed relatively high cell viability for all hydrogels, indicating satisfactory in vitro biocompatibility. Therefore, new OEGDMA based hydrogels showed potential for biomedical applications.

AB  - In order to compare alpha-particle and gamma-ray spectrometry, the activity concentrations of 235U, 238U and 226Ra in samples of coal, slag and fly-ash from the thermal power plant “Nikola Tesla A”, Serbia, were determined by these two methods. Methods were compared and discussed from the point of view of its precision, difficulty to apply and complexity. Gamma-ray spectrometry was performed with HPGe (High Purity Germanium) spectrometer, while alpha activity was measured by PIPS (Passivated Implanted Planar Silicon) detector. For the alpha-particle spectrometry, the chemical procedures applied were chromatographic resin extraction for uranium isotopes and micro-coprecipitation for 226Ra. Thin alpha sources were prepared by electrodeposition and filtration through polypropylene membrane filter for uranium determination, while filtration technique was performed for radium sources. For the evaluation of the statistical difference between individual measurement results obtained by application of two methods Z - test was used. In order to evaluate the difference between two methods used, paired samples t-test and F-test were applied. Results show that there is no statistical difference between two methods used and that gamma-ray spectrometry is a valid alternative to time consuming alpha spectrometry.

AB  - The main purpose of this paper is to improve, generalize, unify, extend and enrich the recent results established by Dung and Hang (2015), Piri and Kumam (2014, 2016), and Singh et al. (2018). In our proofs, we only use the property (F1) of Wardowski’s F-contraction, while the many authors in their papers still use all tree properties of F-contraction as well as two new properties introduced by Piri and Kumam. Our approach in this paper indicates that for most results with F-contraction, property (F1) is sufficient. It is interesting to investigate whether (F1) is sufficient in the case of multi-valued mappings.

AB  - The attachment of squaric acid, a non-aromatic molecule, to the surface of TiO2 powder induced the optical absorption of the obtained hybrid material in the visible spectral range due to the interfacial charge transfer complex formation. The optical characterization of the hybrid is supported by the density functional theory calculations of the model cluster. The paramagnetic species generated upon excitation with ultraviolet or visible light, in both TiO2 powders, pristine and surface-modified, were identified conducting low-temperature solid-state and indirect electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy experiments (spin trapping and spin scavenging). The solid-state EPR experiments indicated the promotion of electrons from the organic moiety to the titania conduction band under visible-light excitation of hybrid. Also, the spin scavenging experiments showed that the electrons generated in the hybrid upon the visible-light activation facilitate the reduction of the radical cations present in the dispersion, while these effects are not observed for pristine TiO2.

AB  - The purpose of this work is to assess accuracy and compare the performance of radionuclide calibrators (RNCs) used in nuclear medicine departments in Serbia. Testing of the RNCs included verification of measurement accuracy, as well as analysis of routinely used quality control protocols, by using the certified radioactivity standards (57Co, 137Cs). RNCs performances were assessed with 99mTc through comparison of reference value for radionuclide activity and RNC measurements. Results of the intercomparison revealed that RNCs, 15 in total, are accurate within 10% in vial geometry and within 15% in syringe geometry. Most of them showed similar performance. The results revealed that container geometry is an important influencing parameter in the accuracy of activity measurement. Obtained results indicate a need for regular calibration and implementation of Quality Control program in order to achieve and maintain the accuracy of activity measurements in nuclear medicine.

AB  - The need for stable, chemical resistant and conductive materials is on the rise in recent times. Graphene shows promising electrical conductivity and chemical stability, but the production of a continual, conductive layer is limited and expensive. Silver nanowires (AgNWs) are both conducive and economically viable, but they are sensitive to water and oxygen. In this study, graphene oxide (GO) and AgNWs were synthesized and combined in different mass ratios (3:1, 2.5:1.5, and 1:1) to obtain chemically stable composites with improved electrical properties. Composites were reduced using ascorbic acid. With the increase of AgNWs to GO mass ratio, the surface of the free-standing composite film improved: the root mean square roughness was lowered from 376 nm for GO to 168 nm for the composite with the mass ratio of GO:AgNWs 1:1, while the sheet resistance was lowered from 146 × 106 Ω/□ to 4 Ω/□. For the first time, the effects of gamma irradiation on the structure of the composites were studied. Doses of 15, 25, and 35 kGy were applied.

AB  - Thin films on the base of titanium oxynitrides and copper doped titanium nitride were obtained by a combination of different PVD techniques on the surface of glass substrate and their physicochemical properties were analyzed in details. Phase composition of the samples was analyzed by XRD and FTIR methods, while microstructure of the samples was analyzed by SEM. XPS was used for depth profiling of the samples, which enabled determination of the oxidative state of titanium and corresponding phases through various film layers from the surface to the substrate. The depth of the various layers and their extinction coefficients and refractory indexes were estimated by spectroscopic ellipsometry.

Influence of Sn doping on the structural, magnetic, optical and photocatalytic properties of hematite (α-Fe2O3) nanoparticles

AB  - Sn-doped hematite (α-Fe2O3) nanoparticles of fairly uniform and Sn-dependent size and shape were synthesized via a simple combination of hydrothermal co-precipitation and calcination. The effects of Sn doping on the unit cell size, crystallinity, particle size and shape, as well as the magnetic, optical and photocatalytic properties of hematite nanoparticles were analyzed. The incorporation of Sn4+ ions into the crystal structure of hematite was confirmed by determination of the unit cell expansion due to the replacement of octahedrally coordinated Fe3+ ions by significantly larger Sn4+ ions, as well as a substantially reduced hyperfine magnetic field due to magnetic dilution upon the substitution of non-magnetic Sn4+ ions for magnetic high-spin Fe3+ ions. Sn doping caused a decrease in length and width and an increase in thickness of elongated hematite nanoparticles. Fairly uniform Sn-doped hematite nanoellipsoids or nanocuboids were formed, depending on the Sn content. Temperature dependence of magnetization measurements showed the disappearance of the magnetic phase transition (Morin transition) in hematite upon Sn doping. Magnetic coercivity decreased upon Sn doping due to a decrease in shape anisotropy induced by the change in particle shape from nanorods to nanoellipsoids and nanocuboids. The optical and electronic properties of hematite nanoparticles were significantly affected by Sn doping – the absorption edge was shifted to higher wavelengths, while direct and indirect optical band gaps narrowed with the increasing Sn4+-for-Fe3+ substitution. Sn-doped hematite nanoellipsoids containing 4.3 mol% Sn exhibited a substantial visible light photocatalytic activity in the heterogeneous photo-Fenton process, but this activity significantly decreased with higher Sn doping.

The optical and electronic properties of hematite nanoparticles were significantly affected by Sn doping – the absorption edge was shifted to higher wavelengths, while direct and indirect optical band gaps narrowed with the increasing Sn4+-for-Fe3+ substitution. Sn-doped hematite nanoellipsoids containing 4.3 mol% Sn exhibited a substantial visible light photocatalytic activity in the heterogeneous photo-Fenton process, but this activity significantly decreased with higher Sn doping.",

From war-related trauma exposure to PTSD and depression: A personality perspective

AB  - The aim of the study is to test a model specifying the relations between personality traits, war-related traumas, PTSD and depression, as well as the measurement aspects of the model. This study was carried out in hospital on 400 male participants. Five-Factor Model of personality was complemented by a recently proposed trait Disintegration representing proneness to psychotic-like experiences/behaviors in the general population. The proposed model had excellent fit, despite its complexity. The results show that PTSD or depression symptoms after traumas are largely related to the number of traumas, Neuroticism, Extraversion, and Disintegration, and their different configurations and quantities. Disintegration turned out to be one of the most important dispositional correlates of depression and PTSD, but also of trauma exposure. © 2021

AB  - In the present paper, we discuss implementation details of a free and open-source numerical solver based on the finite volume method for numerical simulation of viscoplastic non-Newtonian fluids. In addition to the fact that they are involved in many industrial applications, both their physical properties and their rheological behavior make them challenging for numerical simulation. Viscoplastic fluids are known to behave as solid unless the shear stress reaches a critical level, known as yield-stress, beyond which they behave as liquid. In most cases, both yielded and unyielded regions coexist in the fluid domain. In mathematical model of viscoplastic fluid, the constitutive equation is a non-differentiable function. This is often overcome by using the approximate constitutive equation that has a regularized form, e.g. the Papanastasiou regularization model. Using the same approach, we assess the influence of regularization parameters on simulation convergence and results accuracy. In this study, we give implementation details of viscoplastic fluid models in freeCappuccino open-source Computational Fluid Dynamics code. Moreover, we perform validation on several well known benchmark cases and compare proposed approach with those existing in published literature. We also perform a parametric analysis and show the effect of Reynolds and Bingham numbers on the extent of the yielded regions. Conclusions of the study have relevance in practical application of computational fluid dynamics to viscoplastic fluids in particular and to non-Newtonian fluids in general. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

AB  - Pyrolytic tire (PT) chars were first produced from waste car tires (WCT) through carbonization process at 800 °C, for different retention times. Then, best PT-char sample by its physicochemical properties (WCT 800(1 h)) was further tested for its ability to adsorb Rhodamine B (RhB) dye from aqueous solutions. Structural characterization of synthesized material showed existence of graphene-based material, with average pore diameter of 22.8 nm and specific surface area of 55.8 m2·g−1. Obtained carbon material meets specifications of commercial carbon black (CB). The yield of 33.6% of CB recovered has been achieved. Under the optimal conditions, 99.57% of RhB was removed. Adsorption of RhB obeys pseudo second-order model and Langmuir isotherm model. DFT (the density functional theory) was revealed that effective bonding of RhB onto WCT 800 originates from π-electron interactions with aromatic moieties and chemical (or at least the electrostatic) interactions, between positive nitrogen and electron-rich surface groups.

AB  - Fluorescent nanocomposite films were prepared by solution mixing of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and tryptophan functionalized silver (AgTrp) nanoparticles. Synchrotron excitation deep-ultraviolet (DUV) fluorescence imaging was used to follow the distribution of AgTrp nanoparticles within the polymer matrix. Pronounced growth of dendrite-like structures in the presence of AgTrp nanoparticles was confirmed by bright field and fluorescence imaging as well as with atomic force microscopies. Both tryptophan and AgTrp nanoparticles influence thermal properties of the matrix. Differential scanning calorimetry measurements showed that they reduce crystallinity and significantly increase the glass transition temperature of PVA (in the case of PVA-AgTrp film the Tg increases by ~20 °C). Dielectric properties of the films were studied under two different conditions (dark and illumination). The illumination with 250 nm light induces a significant increase in conductance of the PVA-AgTrp nanocomposite. The relative changes, with respect to the conductance measured in the dark, were almost ~200%.
