AB - Cholesterol as very important biomolecule is the precursor of many biologically significant compounds which give strength and flexibility to the biological membranes. It is also a crucial component in lipoproteins, and has an important role to transport hydrophobic molecules in hydrophilic media such as blood [1, 2]. The analytical performance of carbon paste electrodes (CPE) bulk modified with ionic liquid 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide ([AMIM][DCA]), and surface modified with platinum on graphitized carbon (Pt-C) or platinum-ruthenium alloy on graphitized carbon (Pt,Ru-C) for analysis of hydrogen peroxide (H 2O2) were compared. The prepared working electrodes were characterized using scanning electron microscopy–energydispersive X-ray spectrometry, together with electrochemical impedance spectroscopic, cyclic voltammetric, and amperometric techniques. After method optimization, an enzyme cholesterol oxidase (ChOx) was immobilized on the surface of Pt,Ru-C/IL-CPE by Nafion®. The improved cholesterol amperometric determination was achieved in phosphate buffer solution pH 7.50 at a working potential of 0.60 V. Under the optimized experimental conditions, a linear relationship between oxidation current and cholesterol concentration was in the concentration range from 0.31 to 2.46 µM, with an estimated detection limit of 0.13 µM and relative standard deviation (RSD) below 4.2%. The optimized amperometric method in combination with the developed ChOx/Pt,Ru-C/IL-CPE biosensor showed good repeatability and high selectivity towards cholesterol biosensing despite the presence of possible interferences. The ChOx/Pt,Ru-C/IL-CPE was tested for the determination of the free cholesterol, by its enzymatic reaction product H 2O2, in a human blood serum sample. The percentage recovery ranged from 99.08 to 102.81%, while RSD was below 2.0% for untreated, as well as for spiked human blood serum sample.

AB - The increasing popularity of luminescent nanothermometry in recent years can be attributed to its application potential in biomedicine. In response to this need, we describe a biocompatible bimodal luminescent thermometer that operates in ratiometric and luminescence lifetime modes based on particles of MgTiO3:Cr3+,Nd3+@SiO2. The introduction of Cr3+ and Nd3+ dopants enabled the luminescence of Ti3+ ions to be observed, and the difference in the thermal quenching rates of Cr3+ (4T2→4A2), Ti3+ (2T2→2E) and Nd3+ (4F3/2 → 4I11/2) ions enabled the ratiometric thermometers. The highest sensitivity reaching SR = 1.00%K−1 was obtained for MgTiO3:0.1 % Cr3+, 0.1 % Nd3+ at 203 K. The shortening of the lifetime of the 4T2 level of Cr3+ ions associated with its thermal depopulation allows to develop a lifetime-based thermometer with a relative sensitivity reaching 0.85–1.18%K−1 in the physiological temperature range. The deposition of a SiO2 shell on a MgTiO3:Cr3+,Nd3+ did not introduce significant changes in the shape of the emission spectrum and slightly elongates the lifetime by reducing the probability of surface-related nonradiative processes. More importantly, the thermometric performance of this luminescence thermometer was preserved. The low cytotoxicity of the obtained materials underlines their potential in bioapplications of the described luminescent thermometers.

AB - Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) are well known as a promising therapeutic agent due to their excellent pro-oxidant, antioxidant, antibacterial and anticancer properties under visible light irradiation. This material is easy to produce by several bottom-up or top-down methods. In this study, we used citric acid as starting precursor to synthesize aqueous carbon quantum dots dispersion by pyrolysis at 210 ◦C. Atomic force microscopy and XPS analyses revealed that CQDs synthesized are quasi-spherical with typical diameter of 9 nm and lots of C–O and C––O functional groups distributed over the basal plane and edges of the dots. Here, we investigated the antiviral properties of CQDs against cytomegalovirus (CMV). The pre-treatment with CQDs upregulates interferonstimulated genes (ISG), resulting in better virus control. Cellular defence against cytomegalovirus of CQDs pre-treated cells is increased in a dose-dependent manner. Our results reveal high biocompatibility and potent in vitro antiviral properties of CQDs.

AB - Eu3+ doped Zirconia coatings were synthesized by the electrochemical plasma electrolytic oxidation method in only 8 min from the pure zirconium substrate. The phase constitution from pure monoclinic to pure tetragonal and exactly in between was achieved by using different concentrations of Na3PO4 and NaAlO2 electrolytes. The complex emission spectra composed of Eu2+, Eu3+, and ZrO2 defect emission greatly depend on the excitation wavelength and phase constitution. Eu3+ photoluminescence properties depend on the phase, which is reflected by the different Stark splitting and different intensities of transitions. Thus, both phase and photoluminescent properties of ZrO2 coatings are fine-tuneable. Judd-Ofelt analysis was performed from the emission and excitation spectra, showing that all 3 intensity parameters depend linearly on the phase constitution, being largest in the pure monoclinic phase. The mixed phase has Judd-Ofelt parameters between those in pure phases. Eu3+ has 2.45 times more preference to get incorporated into the tetragonal than in the monoclinic phase in the mixed phase samples. The general equation for Judd-Ofelt parameters in a compound with mixed constituents and probability of incorporation is introduced, allowing also for a prediction of the spectrum shape based on the Judd-Ofelt parameters of pure-phase compounds. Python software code for estimating the percent of incorporation by multiple linear regression model is also provided.

AB - We report on the results of the first principles calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) of the electronic structure and mechanical properties of K2LiAlF6, both non-doped and doped with Cr3+ ions. The densities of states of K2LiAlF6 and the K2LiAlF6:Cr3+ phosphor as well as the crystal-field strength 10Dq, the Cr3+ 2E→4A2 emission energy, elastic constants, bulk and shear moduli, sound velocities and Debye temperature as functions of hydrostatic pressure ranging from 0 up to 40 GPa were calculated. The present DFT calculations indicate that, the band gap of non-doped K2LiAlF6 increases quadratically with increasing pressure. Further, the crystal field strength 10Dq and the 2E→4A2 emission energy, the Debye temperature, sound velocities and shear moduli of Cr-doped K2LiAlF6 increase with increasing pressure, while the 2E→4A2 emission energy becomes red-shifted, which indicates potential applicability of the studied system for pressure sensing. Such calculations for the title system were performed for the first time; the obtained results provide a firm basis for a deeper understanding of physical properties of both neat and doped functional materials.

AB - The aspect of the detection of hydrogen isotopes in nuclear materials was analyzed in this review. Particular attention was paid to the spectroscopic methods for the detection of hydrogen isotopes in fusion reactor materials since their presence can induce severe problems in terms of material degradation and shortening of its lifetime. The main focus is on laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy, an optical emission method that is efficient, reliable, and fast. Recent results obtained at the VINCA Institute will also be presented.

AB - Irradiated fig pomace pyrochar (IrrPyrFP) is noteworthy as a novel sterilized low-cost sorbent of BTEX, pesticides, and Pb2+ ions. It was produced by applying pyrolysis treatment followed by gamma irradiation modification in order to obtain a highly efficient and sterile sorbent. The characterization of fig pomace before and after pyrolysis, as well as before and after irradiation of the obtained pyrochar, was done using SEM, FTIR, and elemental analysis, while its sorption ability was tested through the removal of examined pollutants by batch sorption experiments. The obtained results suggest that IrrPyrFP could play a significant role in the control of environmental pollutants, as indicated by the maximum adsorption capacities: 42 mg g−1 for BTEX, 0.625 mg g−1 for malathion, 0.495 mg g−1 for chlorpyrifos and 255 mg g−1 for Pb2+. A kinetic study showed that the removal process by IrrPyrFP mainly follows pseudo 2nd kinetics order, while the sorption equilibriums were estimated using the Langmuir and Freundlich model. Overall, the findings of this work suggest that pyrolysis and activation by irradiation of waste biomass is a promising way to produce sterile efficient sorbents for waste-water treatment based on green chemistry. Additionally, the demonstrated application of fig pomace promotes the potential of using this biomass for continual and economical waste management in the rising fig industry.

AB - Povećana konzumacija fruktoze kroz industrijsku hranu doprinosi razvojumetaboličkog sindroma (MetS). MetS prati hronična inflamacija niskog intenziteta kojojdoprinosi oksidativni stres i aktivacija renin-angiotenzin sistema (RAS).
AB - Increased fructose intake via industrial food is associated with metabolic syndrome(MetS). MetS is characterized by chronic low-intensity inflammation caused by oxidativestress and activation of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS). Walnuts are a rich source ofantioxidants and polyunsaturated n-3 fatty acids that exert anti-inflammatory/immunomodulatory effects on cardiometabolic health, which molecularbackground is underexplored.Walnut consumption (2.4 g/day, 6 weeks) reduced systolic blood pressure in ratsfed a fructose-rich diet (10% FRD, 15 weeks), showed a protective effect on theantioxidative axis SIRT1-FoxO3a-MnSOD/catalase and anti-inflammatory cardiac capacity(AA/EPA reduction) and promoted the anti-inflammatory profile of plasma fatty acids(AA/EPA and AA/DHA reduction), which were compromised by FRD. The role of theaxis negative regulators, Nox4 and ChREBP, should be further investigated in the heartbecause the Nox4 level was increased by both, FRD and walnut supplementation, whilethe ChREBP nuclear level was reduced in FRD as well as in control rats subjected towalnuts. FRD activated a signaling pathway that regulated inflammation by increasing thelevels of the transcription factor NF-κB and the key RAS enzyme, ACE, while walnutsupplementation in FRD rats increased ACE2 level, a cardioprotective component of theRAS. The protein/mRNA levels of the RAS receptors, AT1R and AT2R, were not affectedby either of the two nutritional factors. This study confirmed the beneficial effects of walnut consumption oncardiometabolic status and proposed the mechanisms underlying their anti-inflammatoryand antioxidative effects in the heart, indicating the possibility for development of novel,non-pharmacological approaches in cardiometabolic disease therapy.

AB - Photoelectrochemical (PEC) cells for solar-energy conversion have received huge interest as a promising technology for renewable energy production. For the efficient application of such cells, it is necessary to develop adequate photoelectrodes. Recently, bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) has emerged as a promising photoanode due to its visible light harvesting properties, band edge positions and low-cost of synthesis. In this study, the effects of N5+ ion irradiation (75keV, 2 × 1014 and 4 × 1014 ions/cm2 ) on physicochemical properties of hydrothermally synthesized BiVO4 thin films were examined. From X-ray diffraction (XRD) study can be concluded that initial monoclinic material didn’t sustain any phase transition after irradiation. Also, preferential orientation remained dominantly along [010] direction with a slightly increasing share of [121] oriented growth, especially after irradiation with 2 × 1014 ions/cm2 . XRD measurements showed shift towards the higher 2θ after irradiation which indicates that interplanar distances decreases. The highest level of crystallinity was observed for the sample irradiated with fluence of 4 × 1014 ions/cm2 . Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed prismatic morphology of all samples with an average grain size of 600 nm without visible traces of irradiation.Raman spectroscopy confirmed presence of bands that correspond to the monoclinic scheelite phase. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis of V 2p confirmed presence of V5+ and V4+ while analysis of O 1s confirmed presence of oxygen in the form of lattice oxygen and in the form of hydroxide. UV-Vis Diffuse Reflectance spectroscopy revealed that calculated band gap decreases with the increase of fluence.

AB - In recent years, drug delivery systems have been one of the most investigated solutions for safer and more efficient therapy. Among many investigated materials, hydrogels with incorporated drugs and/or active substances can be produced in different ways to meet the criteria of biocompatibility, non-toxicity, continuous drug delivery, etc. In our previous work, the Ag- P(NiPAAm/IA) hydrogel nanocomposites were produced by radiolytic method, which enabled the synthesis and sterilization of materials in one technological step. Because of silver ions release, these hydrogel nanocomposites showed good antibacterial potential against both gram- positive and gram-negative bacteria. In this study, we go a step forward and investigate the silver release mechanism by fitting experimentally obtained data with several commonly used kinetics models of drug release.

AB - Hydrogels possess distinctive characteristics that can be tailored to meet specific needs, especially in the field of biosciences, which is continuously expanding and advancing. Adjustability of gel porosity, followed by tunability of swelling properties, environmental responsiveness, and stability, are properties that are easily adjusted, offering researchers and engineers the flexibility to fine-tune these properties to suit the specific requirements of diverse applications. As a result of environmental responsivity, one class of these materials emerged, referred to as stimuli-responsive or smart hydrogels. Such hydrogels can change their properties in response to specific external stimuli or environmental conditions in a controlled and reversible manner. Depending on the specific type of smart hydrogel, this feature can enable targeted drug delivery, tissue engineering, and controlled release systems while maintaining their biocompatibility. Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNiPAAm) is a thermosensitive polymer with a well-defined volume phase transition temperature (VPTT) around 32°C. Conversely, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) continue to preserve academic interest due to their size-dependent optical, catalytic, and electronic properties, as well as their significant antimicrobial potential. One of the primary obstacles encountered by scientists is establishing the broader range of practical applications of AgNPs as well as improving the existing ones. Optimizing their properties often involves controlling size and shape, stability, and surface properties. In order to determine how anizotropic Ag NPs alter and influence the physicochemical properties of PNiPAAm we present a simple, straightforward two-step synthesis of AgNPs/PNiPAAm hydrogel nanocomposites. This method involves the chemical synthesis of both spherical and triangular AgNPs, followed by the crosslinking of PNiPAAm through gamma irradiation in the presence of nanoparticles. The validation of employing gamma irradiation is based on the fact that this technology integrates the processes of sterilization and synthesis, resulting in a consolidated technical step that enhances efficiency and enables the exploration of numerous innovative biomedical applications. The porous sponge-like structure was observed by SEM analysis, while the formation of stable and uniformly distributed AgNPs in the polymer was confirmed by UV-VIS spectroscopy. Swelling and deswelling processes were performed in water at 25C and 48C, respectively. In addition, AgNPs were shown to influence VPTT values. The primary objective of this study is to examine the correlation between various morphologies of AgNPs and the physicochemical characteristics of nanocomposite samples. This investigation considers the possible uses and the current demand for the extensive utilization of biocompatible materials.

AB - Radioaktivni izotop barijuma Ba-133 (t1/2 = 10,55 god.), generisan u nuklearnim reaktorima, testiranjem nuklearnog oružja, drugim nuklearnim aktivnostima i akcidentima, dospeva u životnu sredinu atmosferskom emisijom, putem kontaminiranih voda i izluživanjem iz otpada.
AB - The radioactive barium isotope Ba-133 (t1/2 = 10.55 y), generated in nuclear reactors, nuclear weapons testing, other nuclear activities, and accidents, reaches the environment through atmospheric emission, contaminated water and leaching from waste. Considering that the efficiency of pollutant separation from aqueous media using zeolites depends on many process factors, tests are necessary to ensure their optimal use in specific conditions. This work studied the removal of Ba ions by natural clinoptilolite and synthetic zeolite 4A from one-component solutions and two-component mixtures of Ba and Sr ions, under equilibrium conditions. The results showed that Ba ions bind preferentially compared to Sr regardless of zeolite type. However, the capacity and efficiency of Ba sorption and sorption of both cations under competing conditions are significantly higher with the use of Z4A. The total ion sorption capacity increases in two-component systems, indicating the participation of additional active zeolite centers in the presence of Sr ions.

AB - Due to their wide application in industry, medicine, agriculture, and various research fields, the number of sealed radioactive sources (SRS) in the world is constantly increasing. In SRS, the radioactive material is hermetically sealed in a suitable capsule to prevent contact with the environment under normal conditions of use. In cases where such a source is replaced by another technique, becomes obsolete, has insufficient activity or is damaged, it is declared as a disused sealed radioactive source that can still be highly radioactive and potentially dangerous for human health and the environment. A large number of accidents have been recorded worldwide, so adequate management is a priority with the aim of preventing accidents of this type. The disused sealed radioactive source is not necessarily radioactive waste, so other options are considered before declaring it as such. This work aims to present possible approaches and provide insight into the necessary steps to manage sealed radioactive sources safely.

AB - Differently-shaped TiO2 photo-nanocatalysts play a principal role in the remediation of environmental and pollution challenges considering their proven potential for treating organic contaminants in wastewaters [1]. However, increasing the photoactivity of TiO2 i.e. its optical response from UV into visible region is a constant challenge of many ongoing researchers [2]. An proceed towards this demand may be the creation of hybrid functional nanocomposites by coating the TiO2 nanocrystals (NCs) with electronically coupled conductive polymers (e.g., polyaniline (PANI), polypyrrole, etc.) [3]. By the carbonization process of mentioned conductive polymers at high temperatures, obtained final material possess carbon-like structure which impart additional properties [4]. Thus, the evolution of carbonized PANI (CPANI)- coated TiO2 NCs opens up the possibility for tailoring the photocatalyst with distinctive properties. This study implies development of new nanocomposites based on CPANI and colloidal TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) (TPC) and CPANI and TiO2 nanotubes (NTs) (TTPC). Sol- gel and hydrothermal synthesis paths were used to obtain TiO2 NCs. The influence of their size and shape on the photocatalytic activity of formed carbonized nanocomposites was estimated. TPC and TTPC nanocomposites were synthesized according to the steps: 1) the non-carbonized PANI/TiO2 class was firstly prepared by the chemical oxidative polymerization of aniline with ammonium peroxydisulfate in the presence of TiO2 NPs or NTs and 2) the subsequent carbonization process was applied (650 °C). Developed hybrid nanocomposites were morphologically and structurally characterized by TEM measurements and Raman spectroscopy, while their functionality was estimated through the photocatalytic degradation processes of Methylene blue and Rhodamine B. All TPC and TTPC nanocomposites showed excellent photocatalytic properties, however, shape-depending of used TiO2 NCs.

AB - Radiation is a specific method of oncological treatment, in which the action of ionizing radiation achieves the antitumor effect. High-energy ionizing radiation damages the genetic material of tumor tissue cells and thus limits or disables their ability to divide further. Radioisotopes used in treatment in most cases generate beta radiation that causes the destruction of diseased cells. The interest in developing 177Lu as a radiopharmaceutical can be attributed to the suitability of its nuclear properties for therapeutic use, the emission ofβ(-) and γ radiation, and its good complexation with various ligands. This paper presents the preliminary synthesis of Lu(III) complex with a polyazamacrocyclic ligand.

AB - Malondialdehyde (MDA) is the end product of lipid peroxidation and biomarker of free radicals. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of honey on concentrations of MDA in plasma exposed to a therapeutic dose of radiation. In this experiment animals were divided into two groups: in CONTROL group the animals were given distilled water orally for 28 days, and HONEY group consisted of animals given 1,5 ml/kg honey orally for 28 days. Blood samples of both groups were collected from a rat's tail. All blood samples were exposed to radiation of 2 Gy. Malondialdehyde concentration in plasma was determined using spectrophotometric method. Honey treatment in the blood plasma exposed to a therapeutic dose of 2 Gy significantly decreased MDA level by 30 % compared with control group. The present results indicated that honey had an effect on the levels of MDA in plasma exposed to radiation.

AB - The Laboratory for radioisotopes of the Vinča Institute is a unique center in the region with licences of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Serbia and the Directorate for Radiation and Nuclear Safety and Security of Serbia for the production of radiopharmaceuticals. Sodium iodide (I-131) capsules are radiopharmaceuticals that have been produced for more than 40 years in the Laboratory for Radioisotopes, and are used in the treatment of tumors of thyroid gland, as well as in hyperthyroidism. The radiation effects of I-131 on thyroid cells originate from beta-radiation emitted by I-131 during radioactive decay in the thyroid gland itself because I-131 after oral administration accumulates primarily in the thyroid gland where it has a long retention. For the effective therapy, but at the same time in order to reduce exposure to unnecessary high doses, the appropriate dose of I-131 is determined for each patient, in the so-called personalized therapy. The paper describes the current procedure for the production of I-131 capsules in the Laboratory for Radioisotopes by manually filling the capsules with I-131 solution and the basic requirements for design the system for automating the production of radiopharmaceuticals, which above all must provide adequate protection for the operator from radiation, must be user friendly and computer-controlled.

AB - High-entropy spinel oxides (HESOs) are oxides with 5 or more cations with the general formula AB2O4 and the spinel ( Fd 3m ) structure. Due to their unique structure and properties, HESOs have shown great potential in various technological applications, i.e. they can be used as catalysts, adsorbents and photocatalysts. Since the first successful synthesis in 2018, researchers have been experimenting with different precursors and synthesis methods. However, further research is still needed in order to fully understand their capabilities and exploit their properties. The aim of this research is to synthesize novel HESOs using the self-propagating room temperature (SPRT) method, which is time and cost-effective and has not been utilized so far. Our results indicate that chlorides are not good precursors, since the formation of spinel structure has not been achieved. On the other hand, the use of nitrates has successfully led to a primary spinel ( Fd 3m ) phase. Still, certain issues persist, as secondary phases are commonly formed, especially in the presence of Mg or Cu. A potential solution that could ensure the formation of a single phase is the use of quenching from high temperatures (1000 °C), instead of gradual cooling.

AB - Two series of glass-ceramic composites (basalt/mine tailings, basalt/basalt fibers) as well as one pure glass-ceramic were prepared from basalt rocks located in the SE part of Serbia (Lukovska Banja). Both composites contained 85, 90 and 95 wt.% basalt glass respectively. The basalt glass was obtained from initial melting of basalt at 1300 °C. In the present study, the crystallization process of basalt glass contained in the glass-ceramic composite, achieved by thermal treatment, was observed, and analyzed. The thermal treatment was done at 900 °C, 950 °C, 1000 °C and 1050 °C respectively, with the retention times of 1, 3, 6, 8 and 16 hours. It was found that the addition of mine tailings and basalt fibers caused a change in the density and microstructure. The study also showed that the best mechanical and structural characteristics of the examined glassceramics were attained at the temperature of 1050 °C, with the retention time of 1 hour. Additionally, structural and optical characteristics of the glass-ceramics were assessed.

AB - The alterations of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) neurotransmission induced by psychosocial stress are implicated in the pathophysiology of major depressive disorder and anxiety. Olanzapine (Olz), an atypical antipsychotic, is used to treat psychiatric disorders. Since GABAergic signaling has been proposed as a potential therapeutic target for antipsychotics, we aimed to determine the susceptibility of different layers (1;2/3/4;5/6) in the retrosplenial cortex (RSC), including both granular c (RSGc) and dysgranular (RSD) subregions, in adult male rats exposed to chronic social isolation (CSIS) (six weeks), an animal model of depression, and/or treatment with Olz (7.5 mg/kg/day) (lasting 3 weeks of six-week CSIS), on the protein expression of parvalbumin interneurons, the largest class of GABAergic inhibitory neurons, and glutamate decarboxylase 67 (GAD67), as the main GABA-synthesizing enzyme. Results showed that CSIS decreased the number of GAD67 positive (GAD67+) cells in 5/6 layers of RSGc and increased in 1 and 2/3/4 layers of RSD, with no significant effect on PV positive (PV+) cells. Treatment with Olz in CSIS rats increased the number of GAD67+ cells in the 5/6 layers of the RSC and decreased in 1 and 2/3/4 layers of the RSD. Regarding PV+ cells, Olz treatment led to a decrease in 2/3/4 layers of RSD with no significant effect in RSGc. Overall, this study provided an insight into the neuroinhibitory transmission in the RSC, at the level of subregions and layers following CSIS and/or Olz treatment, and its involvement in the rat model of depression.

AB - A series of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs)-poly(vinyl alcohol)/poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PVA/PVP) hydrogel nanocomposites were synthesized by gamma irradiation to examine the matrix's impact on properties of Ag nanocrystals important for strain engineering in functional materials. SEM analysis and the swelling studies revealed nanocomposite morphology and fluid transport properties. UV–Vis absorption characterization of AgNPs has enabled an understanding of the cluster size effects. The gel content indicated inter-crosslinking of the two components of the polymer matrix, especially for equivalent (1:1) PVA/PVP ratio, affecting the investigated AgNPs structural parameters. The lattice parameters and the interface stress, analyzed using XRD, have the lowest negative magnitude from the bulk lattice constant for the PVA/PVP (2:1) and (1:1) ratio. The lowest values of the lattice strain and dislocation density, as mutually dependent parameters, are obtained in AgNPs embedded in a PVA/PVP (2:1) and (1:1) matrix. The XPS and FTIR data show a positive shift of the O1s and a redshift of the CO – Ag vibration band indicating charge transfer to the vacant orbital of Ag nanocrystals. The N atoms of the pyrrolidine ring are not directly involved in the electronic interactions, but over the p-π conjugation with carbonyl O. In addition, the tested Ag-(PVA/PVP) hydrogel nanocomposites showed significant potential as a broad-spectrum antibacterial material.

AB - Hydrogels have unique properties and many potential applications, particularly in medicine and biotechnology. Gel porosity and swelling properties, stability, and biocompatibility are charac-teristics that are widely variable and easily adjusted. Stimuli-responsive or intelligent hydrogels are a class of thesematerials that shows a significant response to small changes in the surrounding environment. Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNiPAAm) is the best-known thermosensitive polymer with a well-defined volume phase transition temperature (VPTT) around 32C. On theother hand, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been the subject of intense interest due to their size-dependent optical, catalytic, and electronic properties as well as remarkable antimicrobial potential. Within the last decade, scientists have demonstrated that anisotropic AgNPs can be synthesized in a controlled manner and that these materials exhibit distinctively different physicochemical properties from their spherical counterparts. A significant challenge that scientists face is establishing how thesenanoparticles can be used in a wider spectrum of practical applications. Therefore, we pre-sent a simple, straightforward two-step synthesis of AgNPs/PNiPAAm hydrogel nanocomposites that includes the chemical formation of both spherical and triangular AgNPs, followed by gamma irradiation-induced PNiPAAm crosslinking in the presence of nanoparticles. The gamma irradia-tion technique merges sterilization and synthesis in a single technological step, optimizing the pro-cess and opening up a wide range of innovative biomedical applications. The formation of stable and uniformly distributed AgNPs in the polymer was confirmed by UV-VIS spectroscopy, while the network porous sponge-like structure was observed by SEM analysis. Physicochemical characteri-zation was performed by examining the swelling and deswelling processes in water at 25C and 48C, respectively. In addition, AgNPs were shown to have an effect on VPTT values. Our main goal is to investigate how different morphologies of AgNPs affect the physicochemicalproperties of nanocomposite samples, considering the potential applications and the ongoing need for the wide-spread use of biocompatible materials
Zbog svega navedenog, u okviru ovog istraživanja biće izvedena jednostavna dvostepena sinteza AgNPs/PNiPAAm hidrogel nanokompozita koja uključuje hemijsko formiranje sfernih i trouglastih AgNPs u prvom koraku, a zatim gama-indukovano umrežavanje NiPAAm-a u prisustvu ovih AgNPs. Tehnika gama zračenja objedinjuje sterilizaciju i sintezu u jednom tehnološkom koraku čime se proces optimizuje i otvara širok spektar inovativnih biomedicinskih primena. Formiranje stabilnih i uniformno distribuiranih AgNPs unutar matrice hidrogela potvrđeno je UV-Vis spektroskopijom, a porozna sunđerasta struktura polimerne mreže SEM analizom.

AB - Monoclinic bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) is considered to be one of the most promising photoanode materials for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting due to its suitable band gap and band structure, good stability and low-cost synthesis. However, BiVO4 has poor charge transfer properties due to the high rate of electron-hole recombination and understanding the effects contributing to it is important for further improvements. Herein, we report the effect of swift heavy ion irradiation (Xe, 150 MeV, 1010 – 5×1011 ions/cm2 ) on physicochemical properties of hydrothermally synthesized BiVO4 thin films. X-ray diffraction study (XRD) showed that irradiated material preserved initial monoclinic scheelite crystal phase and preferential growth along [010] direction. As the fluence increased, a shift of the diffraction maxima towards lower 2θ values was observed indicating increased interplanar distances. Also, for the 5×1011 ions/cm2 irradiated sample, high degree of amorphization was noticed. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of all samples showed prismatic grains with an average size of 600 nm. In irradiated samples formation of ion tracks, ~10 nm in diameter, was observed. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis of Bi 4f, V 2p and O 1s states showed that, after irradiation, increased amounts of V4+ and oxygen in the form of hydroxide occurred, especially at higher fluences. By using UV-Vis Diffuse Reflectance spectroscopy we showed that band gap decreased with the increase of fluence. Photocurrent densities obtained from linear sweep voltammetry indicated that irradiation with fluences higher than 1010 ions/cm2 have a notable negative effect on PEC oxygen evolution reaction. However, 1-hour-long chronoamperometry measurements of 1010 ions/cm2 irradiated sample revealed an increase of photocurrent densities. In order to get a better insight into preceding phenomena, we performed XRD, SEM and XPS analysis after PEC process.
