Photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue under natural sunlight using iron titanate nanoparticles prepared by a modified sol–gel method

AB  - The aim of this work was to synthesize semiconducting oxide nanoparticles using a simple method with low production cost to be applied in natural sunlight for photocatalytic degradation of pollutants in waste water. Iron titanate (Fe2TiO5) nanoparticles with an orthorhombic structure were successfully synthesized using a modified sol–gel method and calcination at 750°C. The as-prepared Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles exhibited a moderate specific surface area. The mesoporous Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles possessed strong absorption in the visible-light region and the band gap was estimated to be around 2.16 eV. The photocatalytic activity was evaluated by the degradation of methylene blue under natural sunlight. The effect of parameters such as the amount of catalyst, initial concentration of the dye and pH of the dye solution on the removal efficiency of methylene blue was investigated. Fe2TiO5 showed high degradation efficiency in a strong alkaline medium that can be the result of the facilitated formation of OH radicals due to an increased concentration of hydroxyl ions.

AB  - The UV-B represents the minor fraction of the solar spectrum, while UV-C is not contained in natural solar radiation, but both radiation types can cause damaging effects in plants. Cell walls (CWs) are one of the targets for external stressors. Juvenile P. omorika trees were treated either with 21 day-high doses UV-B or with 7 day- UV-C in open-top chambers. Using spectroscopic and biochemical techniques, it was shown that the response to UV radiation includes numerous modifications in needle CW structure: relative content of xylan, xyloglucan, lignin and cellulose decreased; cellulose crystallinity changed; yield of lignin monomers with stronger connection of C[dbnd]C in side chain with the ring increased; re-distribution of inter- and intra-polymer H-bonds occurred. The recovery was mediated by an increase in the activities and changes in isoform profiles of CW bound covalent peroxidases (POD) and polyphenol oxidases (PO) (UV–B), and ionic POD and covalent PO (UV–C). A connection between activities of specific POD/PO isoforms and phenolic species (m- and p-coumaric acid, pinoresinol and cinnamic acid derivatives) was demonstrated, and supported by changes in the sRNA profile. In vivo fluorometry showed phenolics accumulation in needle epidermal CWs. These results imply transversal connections between polymers and changed mechanical properties of needle CW as a response to UV. The CW alterations enabled maintenance of physiological functions, as indicated by the preserved chlorophyll content and/or organization. The current study provides evidence that in conifers, needle CW response to both UV-B and UV-C includes biochemical modifications and structural remodeling. © 2021 Elsevier Masson SAS

Characterization of B4C-SiC ceramic composites prepared by ultra-high pressure sintering

AB  - Additive-free boron carbide (B4C) – silicon carbide (SiC) ceramic composites with different B4C and β-SiC powders ratio were densified using the high-pressure “anvil-type with hollows” apparatus at 1500 °C under a pressure of 4 GPa for 60 s in air. The effect of starting powders ratio on the composites sintering behavior, relative density, microstructural development, and thermomechanical properties was studied. The sintered samples hardness was found to be in the range from 24 to 31 GPa. The thermal conductivity measurements, conducted in the temperature range from room temperature to 1000 °C, showed that the thermal diffusivity of sintered samples was between 6 and 9.5 mm2/s whereas the thermal conductivity was in the range from 16 to 28 W/(m K). The results of this study show that the high-pressure sintering can be a very effective low-temperature densification method for the obtainment of additive-free B4C - β-SiC ceramic composites. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd

AB  - Therapy of bacterial urinary tract infections (UTIs) and catheter associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) is still a great challenge because of the resistance of bacteria to nowadays used antibiotics and encrustation of catheters. Bacterial cellulose (BC) as a biocompatible material with a high porosity allows incorporation of different materials in its three dimensional network structure. In this work a low molecular weight chitosan (Chi) polymer is incorporated in BC with different concentrations. Different characterization techniques are used to investigate structural and optical properties of these composites. Radical scavenging activity test shows moderate antioxidant activity of these biocompatible composites whereasin vitrorelease test shows that 13.3% of chitosan is released after 72 h. Antibacterial testing of BC-Chi composites conducted on Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria causing UTIs and CAUTIs (Escherichia coli,Pseudomonas aeruginosa,Klebsiella pneumoniae) and encrustation (Proteus mirabilis) show bactericidal effect. The morphology analysis of bacteria after the application of BC-Chi shows that they are flattened with a rough surface, with a tendency to agglomerate and with decreased length and width. All obtained results show that BC-Chi composites might be considered as potential biomedical agents in treatment of UTIs and CAUTIs and as a urinary catheter coating in encrustation prevention.

Photoactive and antioxidant nanochitosan dots/biocellulose hydrogels for wound healing treatment

AB  - Bacterial infection and their resistance to known antibiotics delays wound healing. In this study, nanochitosan dots (nChiD) produced by gamma irradiation have been encapsulated in bacterial cellulose (BC) polymer matrix to study the antibacterial potentials of these nanocomposites and their possible usage in wound healing treatment (scratch assay). Detailed analyses show that nChiDs have disc-like shape and average diameter in the range of 40 to 60 nm depending of the applied dose. All nChiDs as well as BC-nChiD nanocomposites emit green photoluminescence independently on the excitation wavelengths. The new designed nanocomposites do not have a cytotoxic effect; antioxidant analysis shows their moderate radical scavenging activity whereas antibacterial properties show significant growth inhibition of strains mostly found in difficult-to-heal wounds. The obtained results confirm that new designed BC-nChiD nanocomposites might be potential agent in wound healing treatment. © 2021 Elsevier B.V.

abstract = "Bacterial infection and their resistance to known antibiotics delays wound healing. In this study, nanochitosan dots (nChiD) produced by gamma irradiation have been encapsulated in bacterial cellulose (BC) polymer matrix to study the antibacterial potentials of these nanocomposites and their possible usage in wound healing treatment (scratch assay). Detailed analyses show that nChiDs have disc-like shape and average diameter in the range of 40 to 60 nm depending of the applied dose. All nChiDs as well as BC-nChiD nanocomposites emit green photoluminescence independently on the excitation wavelengths. The new designed nanocomposites do not have a cytotoxic effect; antioxidant analysis shows their moderate radical scavenging activity whereas antibacterial properties show significant growth inhibition of strains mostly found in difficult-to-heal wounds. The obtained results confirm that new designed BC-nChiD nanocomposites might be potential agent in wound healing treatment. © 2021 Elsevier B.V.",

AB  - Graphene is an excellent material to anchor metal nanoparticles due to its large surface area. In this paper, we report the use of electrochemically exfoliated graphene as support to anchor gold nanoparticles (Au NPs). Au NPs are synthesized via the reduction of chloroauric acid under gamma irradiation at low doses of 1, 5, and 10 kGy and directly deposited onto the graphene surface, making this procedure simple and fast. Good water dispersibility of exfoliated graphene, due to the presence of oxygen-containing functional groups in the structure of graphene, provides long-term stability of Au NPs - graphene composite dispersions. The majority of the Au NPs obtained by this method have sizes of up to 40 nm, while the increase in the applied dose leads to an increase in the amount of smaller nanoparticles. The increase of temperature of the prepared composite material upon irradiation with an 808 nm continuous wave laser was monitored. All samples show a temperature increase between 21.5 and 25.6 °C for 10 min of the laser exposure, which indicates that Au NPs - graphene composite can effectively be used in photothermal treatment for cancer therapy. © 2021 Elsevier Inc.

Difficulties related to the ES complex, variable composition and inhomogeneity, where the dominant presence of Cr was followed by: Fe, P, Zn, Ni, Cu, etc., can be overcome by determination of the precise amount of Fe2O3 necessary to be added in order to firmly embed all the heavy metals into the pigment structure (i.e. the Fe0.7Cr1.3O3/FePO4 nanocomposite), taking care not only about weight/molar ratios, but also about average particle size, apparent densities, and volume fraction of the starting materials. As a source of Fe2O3, commercial (p.a.) Fe2O3 and two different Fe-wastes were used, thus completely fulfilling the principles of the circular economy. The obtained black inorganic pigments have consistent composition, no leaching of toxic metals, color (CIE L-a-b-values) comparable with those of commercial pigments and thus have the potential commercial large scale application. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd.

Exploring UiO-66(Zr) frameworks as nanotraps for highly efficient removal of EDTA-complexed heavy metals from water

AB  - Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), an exciting class of porous crystalline materials, are suitable for adsorptive removal of toxic heavy metal-ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (M-EDTA) complexes from wastewater. In this paper, water-stable UiO-66(Zr) with well-defined morphology was successfully synthesized through a facile microwave-assisted solvothermal method and employed as nanotraps for the efficient capture of the three M-EDTA complexes, Cu-EDTA, Pb-EDTA, and Ni-EDTA. The adsorption behaviors, effects of solution pH and co-existing anions, as well as the eluant and desorption were investigated. The obtained UiO-66(Zr) showed good stability and excellent uptake capacity of M-EDTA in a wide pH range (3.0-10.0). UiO-66(Zr) exhibited a higher removal efficiency of Cu-EDTA (57.56 mg/g), Pb-EDTA (120.6 mg/g), and Ni-EDTA (54.27 mg/g). Based on the overall analysis results, our findings show that EDTA-metal complex ions can be adsorbed inside UiO-66(Zr) mainly through the Lewis-acid/-base interactions and possible anion-πinteraction with strong binding energies. Size-matching EDTA-metal complexes confined in the UiO-66(Zr) with flexible geometry would also contribute to the fast adsorption kinetics as well as the selective adsorption of different M-EDTA complexes. © 2020 Elsevier Ltd.

They were prepared by electrodeposition (MoO2) and electrodeposition followed by thermal treatment (MoO3), and then characterized by the cyclic voltammetry, SEM, EDX, XRD, and FTIR. The RB 19 was degraded by self-made non-thermal atmospheric pressure pulsating plasma corona reactor. Decolourization mechanism, parameters, kinetics, and influence of the catalysts were examined. Mo-oxides enhanced degradation reactions rate constants by 45% – 50%, increased decolourization rate at all the tested pHs, discharged current densities, and decreased energy consumption. Degradation followed the pseudo-first kinetics order and proceeded via plasma-generated ⋅OH radical, which attacked dye molecule; MoO2 and MoO3, excited by plasma-generated UV radiation and high-energy chemical species bombardment, enhanced decomposition of plasma-generated H2O2 into ⋅OH radicals, thus enhancing production of degradation agent. Higher percentage of mineralization was attained in the presence of catalysts, which maintained their degradation activity after 5 uses.

AB  - Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to present and validate an originally developed application SkinCare used for skin dose mapping in interventional procedures, which are associated with relatively high radiation doses to the patient’s skin and possible skin reactions. Methods: SkinCare is an application tool for generating skin dose maps following interventional radiology and cardiology procedures using the realistic 3D patient models. Skin dose is calculated using data from Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) Radiation Dose Structured Reports (RDSRs). SkinCare validation was performed by using the data from the Siemens Artis Zee Biplane fluoroscopy system and conducting “Acceptance and quality control protocols for skin dose calculating software solutions in interventional cardiology” developed and tested in the frame of the VERIDIC project. XR-RV3 Gafchromic films were used as dosimeters to compare peak skin doses (PSDs) and dose maps obtained through measurements and calculations. DICOM RDSRs from four fluoroscopy systems of different vendors (Canon, GE, Philips, and Siemens) were used for the development of the SkinCare and for the comparison of skin dose maps generated using SkinCare to skin dose maps generated by different commercial software tools (Dose Tracking System (DTS) from Canon, RadimetricsTM from Bayer and RDM from MEDSQUARE). The same RDSRs generated during a cardiology clinical procedure (percutaneous coronary intervention—PCI) were used for comparison. Results: Validation performed using VERIDIC's protocols for skin dose calculation software showed that PSD calculated by SkinCare is within 17% and 16% accuracy compared to measurements using XR-RV3 Gafchromic films for fundamental irradiation setups and simplified clinical procedures, respectively. Good visual agreement between dose maps generated by SkinCare and DTS, RadimetricsTM and RDM was obtained. Conclusions: SkinCare is proved to be very convenient solution that can be used for monitoring delivered dose following interventional procedures. © 2021 The Authors. AB  - Interventional procedures in radiology and cardiology are associated with high dose to the patient. Accurate dosimetry is essential and calibration of the equipment is a means to provide the necessary accuracy of dose assessment. The objective of this work is to investigate the performance of dosimeters used in interventional procedures in different standard and non-standard X-ray radiation qualities, and to investigate potential uncertainties related to dose measurements, thus improving accuracy of patient dosimetry in interventional procedures. Four new reference radiation qualities dedicated to interventional cardiology applications have been established, allowing calibration of dosimeters used in clinical conditions with appropriate traceability to primary standards. Testing of solid-state semiconductor detectors and thermoluminescent dosimeter properties, e.g. influence of photon energy, angle of incidence and dose rate, was performed in the standard and non-standard radiation qualities. Both dosimeter types showed good performance in the non-standard beams during all performance tests. Solid-state dosimeters displayed weak dependence on energy, angle of incidence and dose rate, in the range defined by the manufacturer and requirements of the international standard. Thermoluminescent dosimeters displayed excellent linearity and angular dependence. The influence of energy dependence on measurement uncertainty can be reduced if appropriate radiation quality is selected for calibration. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd

AB  - Morphology and development of surface damage of alumina-based materials, resulting from cavitation erosion is studied in this paper. Two series of samples were prepared: samples without fibers and those with the addition of 2 wt % of ceramic fibers. The form of surface damage is considered to be the information carrier for the analysis of the resistance of materials to cavitation and the quality of this information is determined. The surface of the samples was monitored in defined time intervals in order to prepare the digitized image suitable for further analysis using image analysis software. The principal component analysis was applied to examine the appearance of certain morphological characteristics depending on the behavior of the material during cavitation erosion. It was concluded that the addition of ceramic fibers gained in importance after a long time of cavitation erosion, while during a starting period of time the difference in the morphology of the damage is not very observable. © 2021 Elsevier B.V.

AB  - In this study, halloysite nanotubes (HNT) were modified by: 3-glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GLYMO), 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APTES), and 2,2-Bis[4-(glycidyloxy) phenyl] propane (DGEBA), and incorporated in the epoxy resin matrix to enhance its mechanical properties. The HNT/epoxy nanocomposite materials were prepared by mixing different ratios of untreated/treated HNT with neat epoxy resin. Characterization of untreated/treated HNT was performed by Fourier-transformation infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The quantity of grafted molecules and thermal stability of newly synthesized materials were determined by thermogravimetric (TG) and derivative thermogravimetric (DTG) analysis. Tensile properties of newly synthesized materials were compared, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis of the fracture surfaces were performed. Incorporation of APTES modified HNT (HNTAPT) and two-step modification APTES followed by DGEBA (HNTAPTDG) has increased the tensile strength of the nanocomposite materials up to 72% and 61%, and strain at break up to 1082% and 1216%, respectively, compared to neat epoxy. It was concluded that the modification of HNT contributed to the enhancement of the dispersion and the cross-linking in the epoxy resin matrix. © 2021 Society of Plastics Engineers

Three specific techniques were used to integrate HNTs into neat epoxy resin (NE). The structure and morphology of the embedded nanotubes were confirmed by Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Tensile testing was carried out and the fractured surface of the tested specimen was analysed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The thermal stability of the prepared nanocomposite materials was investigated by thermogravimetric (TG) and derivative thermogravimetry (DTG) studies. The obtained results indicated that improved properties of HNTs/epoxy nanocomposite materials were related to the unique properties of well-dispersed HNTs, agglomerate scale, and reduced void presence, and could be controlled by the manufacturing processes.

Ferromagnetism in intermetallic Hf6Co23 alloy

AB  - Ferromagnetism in Hf6Co23 intermetallic alloy at room temperature has been confirmed from perturbed angular correlation measurements using 181Hf probe. The strength of hyperfine magnetic field at room temperature for this intermetallic compound has been found to be Bhf=2.5(2) T while the earlier report of hyperfine magnetic field in Hf6Co23 has discrepancy. The hyperfine magnetic field at Ta impurity site has also been calculated by density functional theory and the result is found to be Bhf=-4.964 T (at 0 K). This value is closer to the present experimental value measured at 298 K. The compound Hf6Co23 has been found to decompose reversibly to Hf2Co7 at 473 K. Ferromagnetism in this material has been found up to 423 K and its Curie temperature is, therefore, set as TC>423 K. From recent measurements by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, electron probe microanalysis and differential scanning calorimetry, Hf6Co23 was reported to be stable in a wide range of temperature and there was no phase existence of Hf2Co7 while the previous reported phase diagram showed a decomposition of Hf6Co23 to Hf2Co7 at a higher temperature. © 2021 Elsevier B.V.

abstract = "Ferromagnetism in Hf6Co23 intermetallic alloy at room temperature has been confirmed from perturbed angular correlation measurements using 181Hf probe. The strength of hyperfine magnetic field at room temperature for this intermetallic compound has been found to be Bhf=2.5(2) T while the earlier report of hyperfine magnetic field in Hf6Co23 has discrepancy. The hyperfine magnetic field at Ta impurity site has also been calculated by density functional theory and the result is found to be Bhf=-4.964 T (at 0 K). This value is closer to the present experimental value measured at 298 K. The compound Hf6Co23 has been found to decompose reversibly to Hf2Co7 at 473 K. Ferromagnetism in this material has been found up to 423 K and its Curie temperature is, therefore, set as TC>423 K. From recent measurements by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, electron probe microanalysis and differential scanning calorimetry, Hf6Co23 was reported to be stable in a wide range of temperature and there was no phase existence of Hf2Co7 while the previous reported phase diagram showed a decomposition of Hf6Co23 to Hf2Co7 at a higher temperature. © 2021 Elsevier B.V.",

The analyzed data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 137fb-1. The analysis is aimed at events that contain H → W W , H → τ τ , or H → Z Z decays and each of the top quark(s) decays either to lepton+jets or all-jet channels. Sensitivity to signal is maximized by including ten signatures in the analysis, depending on the lepton multiplicity. The separation among t H , t t ¯ H , and the backgrounds is enhanced through machine-learning techniques and matrix-element methods. The measured production rates for the t t ¯ H and t H signals correspond to 0.92±0.19(stat)-0.13+0.17(syst) and 5.7±2.7(stat)±3.0(syst) of their respective standard model (SM) expectations. The corresponding observed (expected) significance amounts to 4.7 (5.2) standard deviations for t t ¯ H , and to 1.4 (0.3) for t H production. Assuming that the Higgs boson coupling to the tau lepton is equal in strength to its expectation in the SM, the coupling yt of the Higgs boson to the top quark divided by its SM expectation, κt=yt/ytSM, is constrained to be within - 0.9 < κt< - 0.7 or 0.7 < κt< 1.1 , at 95% confidence level. This result is the most sensitive measurement of the t t ¯ H production rate to date.

Critical assessment of protein intrinsic disorder prediction

AB  - Intrinsically disordered proteins, defying the traditional protein structure–function paradigm, are a challenge to study experimentally. Because a large part of our knowledge rests on computational predictions, it is crucial that their accuracy is high. The Critical Assessment of protein Intrinsic Disorder prediction (CAID) experiment was established as a community-based blind test to determine the state of the art in prediction of intrinsically disordered regions and the subset of residues involved in binding. A total of 43 methods were evaluated on a dataset of 646 proteins from DisProt. The best methods use deep learning techniques and notably outperform physicochemical methods. The top disorder predictor has F max = 0.483 on the full dataset and F max = 0.792 following filtering out of bona fide structured regions. Disordered binding regions remain hard to predict, with F max = 0.231. Interestingly, computing times among methods can vary by up to four orders of magnitude.

AB  - The demand of the contemporary society for renewable energy sources lead to the increase of the bio-power plants. Accordingly, the amount of ash generated by burning the biomass is increased, and its disposal becomes a large environmental problem. The paper presents the research of potential use of biomass wood ash as a partial replacement for coal fly ash (10%, 20%, 30% and 40% of mass) in production of self-compacting concrete (SCC). The effects of biomass wood ash on the properties of SCC in fresh and hardened states have been examined, as well as on the properties of durability. Test results indicated that the biomass wood ash slightly reduces the flowability and passing ability of SCC, while its addition enhances the viscosity of SCC and significantly prevents segregation and bleeding. SCCs with the contents of biomass wood ash up to 20% have approximately same mechanical strength as the reference mixture. Biomass wood ash has no negative effect on the resistance of concrete to the action of water under pressure, but a decrease of freeze/thaw resistance with de-icing salt is detected as its contents increases. The addition of biomass wood ash into SCC increases the drying shrinkage in the initial period of drying (up to 14 days), and it is decreased in a later phase. © 2021, Strojarski Facultet. AB  - Thyroid nodules are among highly prevalent thyroid diseases. To make a distinction between benign and malignant thyroid nodules are of cumbersome significance for each endocrinologist. There is no unique and completely accurate diagnostic test, method, or even biomarker that points to a malignant thyroid nodule. Many studies in modern thyroidology are conducted to determine the usefulness of individual biomarkers, which could help clinicians detect thyroid nodules' potential malignant nature. One interesting biomarker with a promising diagnostic potential for the thyroid gland pathological conditions is nitric oxide (NO). Inducible nitric oxide synthase expression is increased in thyroiditis cases and even more in thyroid carcinoma cases, directly connected with increased NO levels in both pathological conditions. We hypothesize that the basal levels of nitrite/nitrate in serum and biopsy washout could indicate nodules' malignant nature.

Magnetic nano- and micro-particles based on Gd-substituted magnetite with improved colloidal stability

AB  - A series of Fe3-xGdxO4 (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2) nanoparticles with an average diameter of around 8 nm were prepared by the coprecipitation method and coated by citric acid (CA). The nanoparticles show superparamagnetic behavior at room temperature and transition to a blocked state, at a temperature from ~ 89 K to ~ 213 K, depending on Gd concentration. The saturation magnetization of Fe3-xGdxO4 tended to drop for samples with a higher content of Gd. High colloidal stability is mandatory in medical applications of magnetic nanoparticles, and here we demonstrate a new procedure for its improvement. A colloidal sample of Fe3O4@CA was mechanically milled, after which dynamic light scattering and zeta potential measurements were used to monitor the hydrodynamic size and colloidal stability of the acquired suspensions. After 90 min of milling, the average hydrodynamic diameter decreased by 40%, and size distribution changed from polymodal to monomodal, while the negative zeta potential increased from − 30.5 mV to − 52.8 mV. Additionally, Fe2.80Gd0.20O4@CA nanoparticles were embedded in human serum albumin to produce magnetic microspheres (MMS), which could be used as a drug delivery platform. abstract = "A series of Fe3-xGdxO4 (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2) nanoparticles with an average diameter of around 8 nm were prepared by the coprecipitation method and coated by citric acid (CA). The nanoparticles show superparamagnetic behavior at room temperature and transition to a blocked state, at a temperature from ~ 89 K to ~ 213 K, depending on Gd concentration. The saturation magnetization of Fe3-xGdxO4 tended to drop for samples with a higher content of Gd. High colloidal stability is mandatory in medical applications of magnetic nanoparticles, and here we demonstrate a new procedure for its improvement. A colloidal sample of Fe3O4@CA was mechanically milled, after which dynamic light scattering and zeta potential measurements were used to monitor the hydrodynamic size and colloidal stability of the acquired suspensions. After 90 min of milling, the average hydrodynamic diameter decreased by 40%, and size distribution changed from polymodal to monomodal, while the negative zeta potential increased from − 30.5 mV to − 52.8 mV. Additionally, Fe2.80Gd0.20O4@CA nanoparticles were embedded in human serum albumin to produce magnetic microspheres (MMS), which could be used as a drug delivery platform. AB  - The Salerno model constitutes an intriguing interpolation between the integrable Ablowitz-Ladik (AL) model and the more standard (nonintegrable) discrete nonlinear Schrödinger (DNLS) one. The competition of local on-site nonlinearity and nonlinear dispersion governs the thermalization of this model. Here, we investigate the statistical mechanics of the Salerno one-dimensional lattice model in the nonintegrable case and illustrate the thermalization in the Gibbs regime. As the parameter interpolating between the two limits (from DNLS toward AL) is varied, the region in the space of initial energy and norm densities leading to thermalization expands. The thermalization in the non-Gibbs regime heavily depends on the finite system size; we explore this feature via direct numerical computations for different parametric regimes. © 2021 American Physical Society.

AB  - Building integrated photovoltaics modules provide a high degree of design possibilities and additional functionalities in combination with the plain electricity generation well known for standard photovoltaic installations. Consequently, the specialized know-how to understand building integrated photovoltaics, properly design and manufacture them requires much more than the electrical knowledge developed and applied in standard photovoltaic systems. Expertise of building physics and building regulations are also required on a high level. As building integrated photovoltaics modules are usually custom designed, typical electrical design and simulationols cannot be used without modifications, while deeper insight of complex shading influences and specialized overall system design are advantageous. Authors of this publication were involved in well over 1000 building integrated photovoltaics system designs and developments, and their experiences are shared. Recurring questions, issues and mistakes of various building integrated photovoltaics projects are touched, whereas special emphasis is provided on building integrated photovoltaics engineering procedures, system design complexity, as well as shading issues and differentiation of shading according to their origin.

AB  - Resultsof Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) are reported for lithium-niobium-titanium-oxide (LNTO) ceramics synthesized by a solid-state reaction method with two functional additives (MoO3 or ZnO) in the temperature range 323 K - 573 K and frequencies between 10−1 Hz and 107 Hz. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) reveals a textured morphology of rod and plate-like particles that are typical for M-phase LNTO materials, while X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirms the formation of an M-phase member compound with an approximate structure of Li7Nb3Ti5O21. Complex impedance analysis indicates that its overall electrical resistivity behavior depends mostly on the grain boundary processes. EIS analysis shows a negative temperature coefficient of resistance behavior (NTCR) in a defined temperature range in two LNTOs and thermal activation of the conduction mechanisms. The low dielectric constants of 5.5 and 12.1 at 1 MHz were found for the first and second LNTOs, respectively. Complimentary Raman spectroscopic measurements, despite very large crystallographic unit cell of LNTO, reveal only a small number of lines, which is the consequence of a “molecular” nature of materials.
