Photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue under natural sunlight using iron titanate nanoparticles prepared by a modified sol–gel method

AB  - The aim of this work was to synthesize semiconducting oxide nanoparticles using a simple method with low production cost to be applied in natural sunlight for photocatalytic degradation of pollutants in waste water. Iron titanate (Fe2TiO5) nanoparticles with an orthorhombic structure were successfully synthesized using a modified sol–gel method and calcination at 750°C. The as-prepared Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles exhibited a moderate specific surface area. The mesoporous Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles possessed strong absorption in the visible-light region and the band gap was estimated to be around 2.16 eV. The photocatalytic activity was evaluated by the degradation of methylene blue under natural sunlight. The effect of parameters such as the amount of catalyst, initial concentration of the dye and pH of the dye solution on the removal efficiency of methylene blue was investigated. Fe2TiO5 showed high degradation efficiency in a strong alkaline medium that can be the result of the facilitated formation of OH radicals due to an increased concentration of hydroxyl ions.

Ferromagnetism in intermetallic Hf6Co23 alloy

AB  - Ferromagnetism in Hf6Co23 intermetallic alloy at room temperature has been confirmed from perturbed angular correlation measurements using 181Hf probe. The strength of hyperfine magnetic field at room temperature for this intermetallic compound has been found to be Bhf=2.5(2) T while the earlier report of hyperfine magnetic field in Hf6Co23 has discrepancy. The hyperfine magnetic field at Ta impurity site has also been calculated by density functional theory and the result is found to be Bhf=-4.964 T (at 0 K). This value is closer to the present experimental value measured at 298 K. The compound Hf6Co23 has been found to decompose reversibly to Hf2Co7 at 473 K. Ferromagnetism in this material has been found up to 423 K and its Curie temperature is, therefore, set as TC>423 K. From recent measurements by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, electron probe microanalysis and differential scanning calorimetry, Hf6Co23 was reported to be stable in a wide range of temperature and there was no phase existence of Hf2Co7 while the previous reported phase diagram showed a decomposition of Hf6Co23 to Hf2Co7 at a higher temperature. © 2021 Elsevier B.V.

AB  - Soy isoflavone genistein (Gen) exerts beneficial effects against prostate cancer cells in vitro and in vivo. However, its use as a chemoprevention/therapeutic agent is largely limited due to its low bioavailability. In this study we synthesized two variants of a new delivery system, genistein–gold nanoparticles conjugates Gen@AuNPs1 and Gen@AuNPs2, by an environmentally friendly method, using a dual role of Gen to reduce Au3+ and stabilize the formed AuNPs, with no additional component. The formation of Gen@AuNPs was confirmed via UV–Vis spectroscopy, FTIR, and Raman spectra measurements. The spherical shape and uniform size of Gen@AuNPs1 and Gen@AuNPs2 (10 ± 2 and 23 ± 3 nm, respectively), were determined by transmission electron microscopy. The nano-conjugates also varied in hydrodynamic diameter (65.0 ± 1.7 and 153.0 ± 2.2 nm) but had similar negative zeta potential (−35.0 ± 2.5 and −37.0 ± 1.6 mV), as measured by dynamic light scattering. The Gen loading was estimated to be 46 and 48%, for Gen@AuNPs1 and Gen@AuNPs2, respectively. The antiproliferative activities of GenAuNPs were confirmed by MTT test in vitro on three malignant prostate carcinoma cell lines (PC3, DU 145, and LNCaP), while selectivity toward malignant phenotype was confirmed using non-cancerous MRC-5 cells. Flow cytometric analysis showed that the inhibition on cell proliferation of more potent Gen@AuNPs1 nano-conjugate is comparable with the effects of free Gen. In conclusion, the obtained results, including physicochemical characterization of newly synthesized AuNPs loaded with Gen, cytotoxicity, and IC50 assessments, indicate their stability and bioactivity as an antioxidant and anti-prostate cancer agent, with low toxicity against human primary cells. © 2021 Elsevier B.V.

AB  - Hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis activity mediates the relationship between childhood trauma (CT) and psychosis. The FKBP5 gene, one of the key regulators of HPA axis activity after stress exposure, has been found associated with psychosis. Allele-specific and CT related FKBP5 demethylation in intron 7 was revealed in different psychiatric disorders. However, no studies have investigated FKBP5 methylation in subjects with different genetic liability for psychosis. A total of 144 participants were included in the study: 48 patients with psychotic disorders, 50 unaffected siblings, and 46 healthy controls. CT was assessed by Childhood Trauma Questionnaire. The FKBP5 rs1360780 was genotyped and FKBP5 methylation analyses were performed using bisulfite conversion followed by Sanger sequencing at three CpG sites in intron 7. Mixed linear model was used to assess group differences depending on rs1360780 T allele and CT. Results showed a significant T allele-dependent decrease of FKBP5 methylation in patients compared to unaffected siblings and controls. Effect of interaction between T allele and CT exposure on FKBP5 demethylation was found in controls. No effect of both risk factors (T allele and CT) on FKBP5 methylation level was found in unaffected siblings. We confirmed previous evidence of the association between the FKBP5 rs1360780 T allele, CT, and decreased FKBP5 methylation in intron 7. Allele-specific FKBP5 demethylation found in patients could shed a light on altered HPA axis activity in a subgroup of patients related to stress-induced psychosis. FKBP5 methylation and potential protective mechanisms in unaffected siblings after trauma exposure require further investigation. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd

Influence of laser irradiation parameters on the ultrafine-grained Ti45Nb alloy surface characteristics

AB  - In the present study surface alterations of the high pressure torsion (HPT)-deformed Ti[sbnd]45Nb (mass%) alloy induced by laser irradiation treatment are presented. The alloy was irradiated in air, argon, and nitrogen atmosphere using the Nd:YAG laser. Laser-induced surface modifications were analyzed by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), profilometric analysis, and Vickers microhardness measurements. Alloy irradiation under a low laser output energy and a low number of accumulated pulses resulted in the formation of shallow surface craters. An increase of these irradiation parameters caused the appearance of more pronounced surface craters with microcracks and hydrodynamic effects in the form of wave-like structures, ripples, and solidified droplets and consequently caused an increase in the surface roughness. The highest value of the surface roughness of 3.062 μm was attained during the alloy irradiation in argon atmosphere under 15 mJ with 150 accumulated pulses. Interaction of the laser beam with the alloy surface was accompanied by plasma formation and surface ablation due to the irradiation energy absorption. The maximal ablated target material volumes of 5.5 × 1014 nm3 and 2.6 × 1014 nm3 were observed after the irradiation under 15 mJ with 150 accumulated pulses in argon and air atmosphere, respectively. Moreover, attainment of high temperatures at the alloy surface induced its chemical composition alterations. Formation of mixed Ti- and Nb-oxide surface film and absence of nitride particles at the alloy surface was detected irrespective of the irradiation atmosphere. Irradiation in air resulted in the appearance of the most pronounced surface oxide layer with the highest microhardness value which can in great merit influence an increase of the alloy bio-integration abilities and its tribo-corrosion resistance. © 2021 Elsevier B.V.

abstract = "In the present study surface alterations of the high pressure torsion (HPT)-deformed Ti[sbnd]45Nb (mass%) alloy induced by laser irradiation treatment are presented. The alloy was irradiated in air, argon, and nitrogen atmosphere using the Nd:YAG laser. Laser-induced surface modifications were analyzed by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), profilometric analysis, and Vickers microhardness measurements. Alloy irradiation under a low laser output energy and a low number of accumulated pulses resulted in the formation of shallow surface craters. An increase of these irradiation parameters caused the appearance of more pronounced surface craters with microcracks and hydrodynamic effects in the form of wave-like structures, ripples, and solidified droplets and consequently caused an increase in the surface roughness. The highest value of the surface roughness of 3.062 μm was attained during the alloy irradiation in argon atmosphere under 15 mJ with 150 accumulated pulses. Interaction of the laser beam with the alloy surface was accompanied by plasma formation and surface ablation due to the irradiation energy absorption. The maximal ablated target material volumes of 5.5 × 1014 nm3 and 2.6 × 1014 nm3 were observed after the irradiation under 15 mJ with 150 accumulated pulses in argon and air atmosphere, respectively. Moreover, attainment of high temperatures at the alloy surface induced its chemical composition alterations. Formation of mixed Ti- and Nb-oxide surface film and absence of nitride particles at the alloy surface was detected irrespective of the irradiation atmosphere. Irradiation in air resulted in the appearance of the most pronounced surface oxide layer with the highest microhardness value which can in great merit influence an increase of the alloy bio-integration abilities and its tribo-corrosion resistance. © 2021 Elsevier B.V.",

AB  - Persistent microbial contamination of medical implant surfaces is becoming a serious threat to public health. This is principally due to antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains and the formation of bacterial biofilms. The development of novel antibacterial materials that will effectively fight both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and prevent biofilm formation represents a big challenge for researchers in the last few decades. In the present work, we report an antibacterial hydrophobic carbon quantum dots/polyurethane nanocomposite (hCQD-PU), with enhanced antibacterial properties induced by pre-treatment with gamma-irradiation. Hydrophobic quantum dots (hCQDs), which are capable of generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) upon irradiation with low-power blue light (470 nm), have been integrated into the polyurethane (PU) polymer matrix to form a photoactive nanocomposite. To modify its physical and chemical properties and improve its antibacterial efficacy, various doses of gamma irradiation (1, 10, and 200 kGy) in the air environment were applied to the formed nanocomposite. Gamma-irradiation pre-treatment significantly influenced the rise in ROS production, therefore, the prooxidative activity under the blue-light illumination of hCQD-PU was also significantly improved. The best antibacterial activity was demonstrated by the hCQD-PU nanocomposite irradiated with a dose of 200 kGy, with the complete eradication of Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Gram-negative Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria after 15 min of exposure to the blue lamp. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd

AB  - The effects of picosecond Nd:YAG laser irradiation on chemical and morphological surface characteristics of the commercially pure titanium and Ti-13Nb-13Zr alloy in air and argon atmospheres were studied under different laser output energy values. During the interaction of laser irradiation with the investigated materials, a part of the energy was absorbed on the target surface, influencing surface modifications. Laser beam interaction with the target surface resulted in various morphological alterations, resulting in crater formation and the presence of microcracks and hydrodynamic structures. Moreover, different chemical changes were induced on the target materials' surfaces, resulting in the titanium oxide formation in the irradiation-affected area and consequently increasing the irradiation energy absorption. Given the high energy absorption at the site of interaction, the dimensions of the surface damaged area increased. Consequently, surface roughness increased. The appearance of surface oxides also led to the increased material hardness in the surface-modified area. Observed chemical and morphological changes were pronounced after laser irradiation of the Ti-13Nb-13Zr alloy surface.

Mathematical model, numerical simulation and optimization of rotating valve feeder in animal feed production

AB  - The processes of transportation of bulk materials from silos and hoppers are significant in various industrial applications because of their influences on material characteristics and working parameters of the production process. In this paper, a rotating valve feeder, with eight vanes was investigated for transport action of bulk materials, such as wheat, maize and rice, which were ground, using the sieve sizes of 1, 3 and 5 mm. The rotating valve feeders under investigation have proven to be useful in transportation processes despite their construction simplicity. All investigations were done experimentally and numerically, using coupled Discrete Element Method (DEM) and Computational Fluid Dynamics calculation (CFD). The influences of different types of bulk materials and its particle size, on the performances of the rotating valve feeder during material transport were explored. The artificial neural network was developed (in the form of a multi-layer perceptron model) in order to optimize the granular flow of the bulk material, showing the high prediction capability of bulk density, dosing time and granular material flow, with the coefficient of determination equal to 0.999 during the training period. The decreasing of the sieve opening diameter caused the decrease in bulk density of the ground material, but statistically significant only for rice, as seen from the experiments and the results of the neural network model. The 5 mm sieve ensured the material with the highest flowability, significantly increasing the granular flow and decreasing the dosing time. The granular particles were modelled as the spheres in the DEM/CFD simulation, with a small-sized triangular surfaces. The DEM/CFD prediction of the mass transport for rice, wheat and maize was quite adequate, obtaining the coefficient of determination being 0.997; 0.998 and 0.849, respectively.

Kinetic calculations were performed based on simultaneous thermal analysis measurements in an air at four different heating rates. From kinetic analysis, new developed mechanistic scheme which is responsible for wolfberries anti-oxidative behavior was proposed. It was found that thermo-oxidative process proceeds through multiplestep mechanism including sum of two independent reaction sets, via consecutive and competitive steps. It was established that rutoside degradation pathway to flavonol through hydrolysis reaction is rate-determining step of considered process. Furthermore, it was found that key flavonol compound degraded by competitive reactions mechanism forming such kinetic branches, which lead to compounds responsible for wolfberries antioxidant activity. It was established that flavonol oxidative cleavage reaction and oxidative polymerization are main chemical routes which are very important in a complex antioxidant mechanism for scavenging free radicals in wolfberries oxidative stress response.

AB  - The rate for Higgs (H) bosons production in association with either one (t H) or two (t t ¯ H) top quarks is measured in final states containing multiple electrons, muons, or tau leptons decaying to hadrons and a neutrino, using proton–proton collisions recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 13Te by the CMS experiment. The analyzed data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 137fb-1. The analysis is aimed at events that contain H → W W , H → τ τ , or H → Z Z decays and each of the top quark(s) decays either to lepton+jets or all-jet channels. Sensitivity to signal is maximized by including ten signatures in the analysis, depending on the lepton multiplicity. The separation among t H , t t ¯ H , and the backgrounds is enhanced through machine-learning techniques and matrix-element methods. The measured production rates for the t t ¯ H and t H signals correspond to 0.92±0.19(stat)-0.13+0.17(syst) and 5.7±2.7(stat)±3.0(syst) of their respective standard model (SM) expectations. The corresponding observed (expected) significance amounts to 4.7 (5.2) standard deviations for t t ¯ H , and to 1.4 (0.3) for t H production. Assuming that the Higgs boson coupling to the tau lepton is equal in strength to its expectation in the SM, the coupling yt of the Higgs boson to the top quark divided by its SM expectation, κt=yt/ytSM, is constrained to be within - 0.9 < κt< - 0.7 or 0.7 < κt< 1.1 , at 95% confidence level. This result is the most sensitive measurement of the t t ¯ H production rate to date.

abstract = "The rate for Higgs (H) bosons production in association with either one (t H) or two (t t ¯ H) top quarks is measured in final states containing multiple electrons, muons, or tau leptons decaying to hadrons and a neutrino, using proton–proton collisions recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 13Te by the CMS experiment. The analyzed data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 137fb-1. The analysis is aimed at events that contain H → W W , H → τ τ , or H → Z Z decays and each of the top quark(s) decays either to lepton+jets or all-jet channels. Sensitivity to signal is maximized by including ten signatures in the analysis, depending on the lepton multiplicity. The separation among t H , t t ¯ H , and the backgrounds is enhanced through machine-learning techniques and matrix-element methods. The measured production rates for the t t ¯ H and t H signals correspond to 0.92±0.19(stat)-0.13+0.17(syst) and 5.7±2.7(stat)±3.0(syst) of their respective standard model (SM) expectations. The corresponding observed (expected) significance amounts to 4.7 (5.2) standard deviations for t t ¯ H , and to 1.4 (0.3) for t H production. Here, we use a less common, more sensitive observable in the form of the chiral asymmetry parameter to perform a comparative study of the VUV photoelectron spectroscopy and photoelectron circular dichroism (PECD) between pure gas phase enantiomers of the amino acid serine and their corresponding homochiral nanoparticles. We observe a relatively large (1%) and strongly kinetic energy-dependent asymmetry, discussed in terms of the emergence of local order and conformational changes potentially counterbalancing the loss of angular information due to electron transport scattering. This demonstrates the potential of PECD as a sensitive probe of the condensation effects from the gas phase to bulk-like chiral aerosol particles surpassing the potential of conventional photoemission observables such as β parameters. ©

AB  - Dietary polyphenols promote cardiometabolic health and are linked with long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids in plasma phospholipids (LC-PUFA). The FADS2 polymorphisms are associated with LC-PUFA metabolism and overweight/obesity. This 4-week study examined the link between polyphenol intake, FADS2 variants (rs174593, rs174616, rs174576) and obesity in 62 overweight adults (BMI ≥ 25), allocated to consume 100 mL daily of either: Aronia juice, a rich source of polyphenols, with 1177.11 mg polyphenols (expressed as gallic acid equivalents)/100 mL (AJ, n = 22), Aronia juice with 294.28 mg polyphenols/100 mL (MJ, n = 20), or nutritionally matched polyphenol-lacking placebo as a control (PLB, n = 20). We analyzed LC-PUFA (% of total pool) by gas chromatography and FADS2 variants by real-time PCR. Four-week changes in LC-PUFA, BMI, and body weight were included in statistical models, controlling for gender and PUFA intake. Only upon AJ and MJ, the presence of FADS2 variant alleles affected changes in linoleic, arachidonic, and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). Upon MJ treatment, changes in EPA were inversely linked with changes in BMI (β= −0.73, p = 0.029) and weight gain (β= −2.17, p = 0.024). Only in subjects drinking AJ, the link between changes in EPA and anthropometric indices was modified by the rs174576 variant allele. Our results indicate the interaction between FADS2, fatty acid metabolism, and polyphenol intake in overweight subjects.

Properties of Self-compacting Concrete Produced with Biomass Wood Ash

AB  - The demand of the contemporary society for renewable energy sources lead to the increase of the bio-power plants. Accordingly, the amount of ash generated by burning the biomass is increased, and its disposal becomes a large environmental problem. The paper presents the research of potential use of biomass wood ash as a partial replacement for coal fly ash (10%, 20%, 30% and 40% of mass) in production of self-compacting concrete (SCC). The effects of biomass wood ash on the properties of SCC in fresh and hardened states have been examined, as well as on the properties of durability. Test results indicated that the biomass wood ash slightly reduces the flowability and passing ability of SCC, while its addition enhances the viscosity of SCC and significantly prevents segregation and bleeding. SCCs with the contents of biomass wood ash up to 20% have approximately same mechanical strength as the reference mixture. Biomass wood ash has no negative effect on the resistance of concrete to the action of water under pressure, but a decrease of freeze/thaw resistance with de-icing salt is detected as its contents increases. The addition of biomass wood ash into SCC increases the drying shrinkage in the initial period of drying (up to 14 days), and it is decreased in a later phase. © 2021, Strojarski Facultet. AB  - Background: Gentiana lutea (GL), commonly known as yellow gentian, bitter root, and bit-terwort, belongs to family Gentianaceae. GL belongs to genus Gentiana, which is a rich natural source of iridoids, secoiridoids, xantones, flavonoids, triterpenoids, and carbohydrates. Medicinal plants from Gentiana species have anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-mitogenic, anti-proliferative, and lipid-lowering effects, as well as a cardioprotective, hypotensive, vasodilator and anti-platelet activities. Objective: We reviewed the recent literature related to the effects of Gentiana species, and their active components on vascular diseases. Methods: Data used for this review were obtained by searching the electronic database [PUB-MED/MEDLINE 1973-February 2020]. The primary data search terms of interest were: Gentiana lutea, Gentienacea family, phytochemistry, vascular diseases, treatment of vascular diseases, anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-atherogenic. Conclusion: Gentiana species and their constituents affect many different factors related to vascular disease development and progression. Therefore, Gentiana-based therapeutics represent potentially use-ful drugs for the management of vascular diseases. © 2021 Bentham Science Publishers.

PVDF-HFP/NKBT composite dielectrics: Perovskite particles induce the appearance of an additional dielectric relaxation process in ferroelectric polymer matrix

AB  - Na0.25K0.25Bi0.5TiO3 (NKBT) perovskite particles are synthesized by solid-state method and used as a filler for polyvinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-HFP) co-polymer. X-ray diffraction analysis of NKBT powders shows that the particles have a rhombohedral perovskite crystal structure (R3c symmetry). Raman spectroscopy reveals that the co-polymer crystallizes predominantly into the mixture of polar β- and γ-crystals, while there is also a contribution of the non-polar α-crystal phase. The introduction of the NKBT into the PVDF-HFP results with an increase in effective dielectric permittivity and this effect depends on the inorganic content in the composite. The most interesting result of the present study is that the introduction of NKBT particles induces the appearance of an additional transition peak in the dielectric spectra of the co-polymer matrix. At the fixed frequency of ~2 kHz, the observed process appears at ~10 °C (about 45° above the glass transition temperature) and its magnitude strongly depends on the amount of the NKBT in the composite. abstract = "Na0.25K0.25Bi0.5TiO3 (NKBT) perovskite particles are synthesized by solid-state method and used as a filler for polyvinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-HFP) co-polymer. X-ray diffraction analysis of NKBT powders shows that the particles have a rhombohedral perovskite crystal structure (R3c symmetry). Raman spectroscopy reveals that the co-polymer crystallizes predominantly into the mixture of polar β- and γ-crystals, while there is also a contribution of the non-polar α-crystal phase. The introduction of the NKBT into the PVDF-HFP results with an increase in effective dielectric permittivity and this effect depends on the inorganic content in the composite. The most interesting result of the present study is that the introduction of NKBT particles induces the appearance of an additional transition peak in the dielectric spectra of the co-polymer matrix. At the fixed frequency of ~2 kHz, the observed process appears at ~10 °C (about 45° above the glass transition temperature) and its magnitude strongly depends on the amount of the NKBT in the composite. Experimental and computational study of the two-fluid nozzle spreading characteristics

AB  - Spray nozzles are widely used in processing industry for spreading evenly large amount of fluids. The expansion of fluid depends on the nozzle type, the parameters of the nozzle and the characteristics of the working fluids. The experiments were performed for five fluid types used in food/pharma/animal feed application (glycerol, soybean oil, molasses, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, tara gum), three diameters of the nozzle (1 mm, 3 mm, 5 mm) and three fluid temperatures (40 °C, 50 °C and 60 °C). An experimentally validated numerical model was developed, based on laminar two-phase flow, investigating different liquids, assuming the ideal gas flow, applying the finite volume method and volume of the fluid model with interface tracking. The effects of liquid parameters, nozzle diameter and liquid temperature on the characteristics of the jet were also analysed by artificial neural network model. The nozzle diameter strongly influenced the spreading characteristics of the jet, while the temperature affected the liquid viscosity. The increase of the temperature also led to the augment of the spreading angle of the fluid passing from the nozzle and also the enhancement of the spaying liquid expansion. © 2020 Institution of Chemical Engineers

AB  - Background: Leptin (LEP), leptin receptor (LEPR) and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma co-activator 1-alpha (PGC1A) are involved in the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis (MS) by affecting the inflammatory response and reactive oxygen species production. LEP rs7799039 and LEPR rs1137101 genetic variants modify the serum LEP levels and PGC1A rs8192678 alters the PGC1A activity. The study objective was to explore the associations of these variants with susceptibility to MS, disease course/clinical parameters and also with peripheral blood mononuclear cell expression of the target genes and plasma LEP concentrations, in the study subjects. Methods: The study groups included 528 patients with MS and 429 controls. TaqMan® assays were used for genotyping and gene expression quantification. The Chi-square, parametric and nonparametric tests and simple/multiple logistic regression were performed for the statistical analysis of data. Results: A multiple logistic regression model including all three investigated variants, applied to patients (RRMS + SPMS) and controls, showed that PGC1A rs8192678 minor allele had an increased risk for the occurrence of disease, with OR (95%CI) = 1,32 (1,01–1,73), P = 0,04. Between-effect of gender and LEPR variant on the multiple sclerosis severity score (MSSS) was identified (P = 0,005). In male patients (relapsing-remitting and secondary progressive), LEPR minor allele carriers had increased MSSS (GG + AG vs AA, median (minimum–maximum) = 5,38 (0,64–9,88) vs 4,27 (0,78–9,63); P = 0,01, Padj = 0,03). In relapsing-remitting patients LEP rs7799039 affected the LEP gene expression (P = 0,006; Padj = 0,04). Conclusion: The current findings implicate an impact of investigated genetic variants on the pathogenesis of MS. © 2021 Elsevier B.V.

AB  - This paper provides in-depth knowledge about the evolved gas analysis interpretation via newly proposed semi-quantitative approach, arising from thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) – mass spectrometry (MS) coupled measurements, for studying pyrolysis behavior of three kinds of biomass waste materials (spent coffee grounds, beech sawdust and wheat straw). TGA – MS coupling allows accurate correlation between molecular ion peak and fragment peaks to the corresponding mass loss rates from derivative thermogravimetry curves. Within proposed semi-quantitative analysis, MS spectra were interpreted through the comparative analysis of compounds fragments and of the compound itself, where the single atomic mass unit was identified by multiple compounds exhibition. It was shown that by this procedure which involves overlapping multiple curves supervising, the identification of gases in volatiles complex scheme becomes more simplified. By setting up semi-quantitative formulas, easy and reliable calculations of gaseous products yield and syngas energy capacities are possible to achieve. The H2/CO ratio derived from the proposed method for wood waste product (sawdust) is in an excellent agreement with H2/CO ratio for sawdust syngas production, in fuel reactor for biomass gasification and H2 production. © 2021 Elsevier B.V.

Pyrolysis kinetics of Poplar fluff bio-char produced at high carbonization temperature: A mechanistic study and isothermal life-time prediction

AB  - This paper provides insights into understanding the physical and chemical changes that take place during re-heating process of Poplar fluff bio-char derived by carbonization at high operating temperature (850 °C). Bio-char re-heating experiments were performed by simultaneous TGA-DTG-DSC techniques in N2 atmosphere at 5, 10, 15 and 20 °C min−1. Kinetic modeling of the process was done through implementation of model-free and model-based approaches. It was identified that re-heating process contains two stages. The first was described by single consecutive reaction step (up to 200 °C) which is attributed to removal of physisorbed moisture at surface and in pores of carbonized material, while second was described by multiple reactions, including one consecutive step and two competitive steps. In the last, consecutive pathway includes reduction of PAH compounds (400–600 °C) into smaller ones, changing degree of condensation of carbon structure continuously. Bio-char re-heating experiments were performed by simultaneous TGA-DTG-DSC techniques in N2 atmosphere at 5, 10, 15 and 20 °C min−1. Kinetic modeling of the process was done through implementation of model-free and model-based approaches. It was identified that re-heating process contains two stages. The first was described by single consecutive reaction step (up to 200 °C) which is attributed to removal of physisorbed moisture at surface and in pores of carbonized material, while second was described by multiple reactions, including one consecutive step and two competitive steps. In the last, consecutive pathway includes reduction of PAH compounds (400–600 °C) into smaller ones, changing degree of condensation of carbon structure continuously. This places a challenge on the bioinformatics research community to develop and improve computational tools for functional annotation of new variants. Genes coding for epigenetic regulators have important roles in cancer pathogenesis and mutations in these genes show great potential as clinical biomarkers, especially in hematologic malignancies. Therefore, we developed a model that specifically focuses on these genes, with an assumption that it would outperform general models in predicting the functional effects of amino acid substitutions. EpiMut is a standalone software that implements a sequence based alignment-free method. We applied a two-step approach for generating sequence based features, relying on the biophysical and biochemical indices of amino acids and the Fourier Transform as a sequence transformation method. For each gene in the dataset, the machine learning algorithm–Naïve Bayes was used for building a model for prediction of the neutral or disease-related status of variants. EpiMut outperformed state-of-the-art tools used for comparison, PolyPhen-2, SIFT and SNAP2. Additionally, EpiMut showed the highest performance on the subset of variants positioned outside conserved functional domains of analysed proteins, which represents an important group of cancer-related variants. These results imply that EpiMut can be applied as a first choice tool in research of the impact of gene variants in epigenetic regulators, especially in the light of the biomarker role in hematologic malignancies. The properties of such treated polymers can change significantly in time and under various exploitation conditions and therefore, investigation of some specific effects of aging and storage of these systems is of great importance, although the overall degradation behavior of iPP is well known. In this work, isotactic polypropylene (iPP) samples were oriented via solid-state stretching at elevated temperature (at 100°C, up to draw ratio λ=20). This was followed by gamma irradiation in the air (up to 700 kGy) and/or thermo-oxidative (TO) aging (in oxygen, at 100°C, up to 8 days) and/or storage (at room temperature, up to 3 years). As the iPP is very sensitive to orientation and degradation, microstructures were analyzed by optical (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were used to monitor changes in structure and recrystallization. Considering the fact that at higher irradiation doses (>200 kGy), iPP starts to gel under the ambient conditions, gel measurements were employed to determine the yield of network formation induced by irradiation of stretched structures. Irradiation, TO degradation and storage, can induce substantial alternations of (di)electric properties which can be properly connected to the changes in microstructure and crystallinity; therefore, dielectric loss analysis was performed in a wide temperature range and polar groups that were introduced in apolar iPP by oxidation were considered as tracer groups. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd

Cell wall response to UV radiation in needles of Picea omorika

AB  - The UV-B represents the minor fraction of the solar spectrum, while UV-C is not contained in natural solar radiation, but both radiation types can cause damaging effects in plants. Cell walls (CWs) are one of the targets for external stressors. Juvenile P. omorika trees were treated either with 21 day-high doses UV-B or with 7 day- UV-C in open-top chambers. Using spectroscopic and biochemical techniques, it was shown that the response to UV radiation includes numerous modifications in needle CW structure: relative content of xylan, xyloglucan, lignin and cellulose decreased; cellulose crystallinity changed; yield of lignin monomers with stronger connection of C[dbnd]C in side chain with the ring increased; re-distribution of inter- and intra-polymer H-bonds occurred. The recovery was mediated by an increase in the activities and changes in isoform profiles of CW bound covalent peroxidases (POD) and polyphenol oxidases (PO) (UV–B), and ionic POD and covalent PO (UV–C). A connection between activities of specific POD/PO isoforms and phenolic species (m- and p-coumaric acid, pinoresinol and cinnamic acid derivatives) was demonstrated, and supported by changes in the sRNA profile. In vivo fluorometry showed phenolics accumulation in needle epidermal CWs. These results imply transversal connections between polymers and changed mechanical properties of needle CW as a response to UV. The CW alterations enabled maintenance of physiological functions, as indicated by the preserved chlorophyll content and/or organization. The current study provides evidence that in conifers, needle CW response to both UV-B and UV-C includes biochemical modifications and structural remodeling. © 2021 Elsevier Masson SAS

AB  - Additive-free boron carbide (B4C) – silicon carbide (SiC) ceramic composites with different B4C and β-SiC powders ratio were densified using the high-pressure “anvil-type with hollows” apparatus at 1500 °C under a pressure of 4 GPa for 60 s in air. The effect of starting powders ratio on the composites sintering behavior, relative density, microstructural development, and thermomechanical properties was studied. The sintered samples hardness was found to be in the range from 24 to 31 GPa. The thermal conductivity measurements, conducted in the temperature range from room temperature to 1000 °C, showed that the thermal diffusivity of sintered samples was between 6 and 9.5 mm2/s whereas the thermal conductivity was in the range from 16 to 28 W/(m K). The results of this study show that the high-pressure sintering can be a very effective low-temperature densification method for the obtainment of additive-free B4C - β-SiC ceramic composites. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd

AB  - Therapy of bacterial urinary tract infections (UTIs) and catheter associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) is still a great challenge because of the resistance of bacteria to nowadays used antibiotics and encrustation of catheters. Bacterial cellulose (BC) as a biocompatible material with a high porosity allows incorporation of different materials in its three dimensional network structure. In this work a low molecular weight chitosan (Chi) polymer is incorporated in BC with different concentrations. Different characterization techniques are used to investigate structural and optical properties of these composites. Radical scavenging activity test shows moderate antioxidant activity of these biocompatible composites whereasin vitrorelease test shows that 13.3% of chitosan is released after 72 h. Antibacterial testing of BC-Chi composites conducted on Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria causing UTIs and CAUTIs (Escherichia coli,Pseudomonas aeruginosa,Klebsiella pneumoniae) and encrustation (Proteus mirabilis) show bactericidal effect. The morphology analysis of bacteria after the application of BC-Chi shows that they are flattened with a rough surface, with a tendency to agglomerate and with decreased length and width. All obtained results show that BC-Chi composites might be considered as potential biomedical agents in treatment of UTIs and CAUTIs and as a urinary catheter coating in encrustation prevention.
