Recycled Poly(ethylene Terephthalate) Based-Plasticizer for PVC Regranulates Production

AB  - Due to the increasing use and widespread of plastics, poly (ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and poly (vinyl chloride) (PVC) are becoming one of the major threats to the environment. The aim of this paper is obtaining plasticizers from recycled PET, and hot/cold mixing thereof with PVC to produce new materials. Plasticizer was obtained from PET using ethylene glycol (EG) in the presence of catalyst FASCAT 4100, followed by treatment with maleic anhydride and finally 2-ethylhexanol (2-EtHex). The obtained glycolysate and plasticizer, individually or mixtures thereof, were used for the production of polygranulates based on waste PVC in order to obtain an expanded mass of homogenized PVC with glycolysate/plasticizer. The abovementioned procedures and test results for the regranulates and products indicate that the proposed technology offers a solution to the problem of waste PET and PVC through transesterification in order to obtain plasticizer based on PET and EG, called 2-EtHex/MA/РG/PET/EG/MA/2-EtHex used in the processing of PVC waste and in regranulate. The obtained regranulates are further processed by injection molding or extrusion into commercial products such as slippers, footwear, boots, garden hoses, mats, floor mats, etc.

AB  - The liver is an organ in which many oxidative processes occur and represents an important target of oxidative stress (OxS). Under physiological conditions of normal mitochondrial homeostasis, hepatocytes effectively remove reactive oxygen species (ROS) by enabling metabolic adaptations and through the antioxidant defence system mechanisms. However, obesity-induced lipid accumulation in the hepatocytes causes significantly elevated production of ROS, reduces oxidative capacity, and increases oxidative stress (OxS). In men, compared with premenopausal women, the development of insulin resistance (IR) and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in obesity are more prevalent, where oestradiol (E2), the most potent female sex steroid, is proposed as the main culprit. Exogenous oestradiol (E2) administration exerts beneficial effects on antioxidant properties, restores total plasma antioxidant capacity and decreases biomarkers of OxS in ovariectomized animal models. Thus, we hypothesized that E2 treatment in states of obesity could have beneficial effects against OxS in the obese male's liver. We assumed that E2 could directly affect the level of OxS by increasing the level/activity of the AOS enzymes, particularly SOD1, SOD2, GPx, and CAT, in obese males' livers. In addition, we assumed that the level of malondialdehyde (MDA) and protein carbonyl content (PCC) in obese males' livers would be reduced after E2 treatment as a result of E2 inhibitory effect on lipid peroxidation and protein oxidation, respectively. To test our hypothesis, we used the liver of a high-fat (HF) diet-fed male Wistar rats as an animal model of obesity, treated with E2 intraperitoneally (40 μg/kg). Preliminary results from this study support our hypothesis that E2 increases liver protein expression of AOS enzymes: SOD1, GPx, and CAT, in control and HF male rats compared with their respective controls. The protein level of SOD2 and CAT activity was increased in HF treated with E2 compared with non-treated HF rats. Moreover, as we expected, E2 administration significantly decreased the MDA level in both E2-treated groups compared to their controls, while the PCC level was significantly decreased in HF treated group compared with untreated HF rats. In conclusion, the preliminary results we obtained in this study indicate that E2 administration can effectively inhibit the OxS-related processes in the liver in HF diet-induced obesity by increasing AOS enzymes levels and CAT activity, and also by decreasing levels of MDA and PCC. A consequence of our hypothesis is that treatment with E2 may be an innovative way to improve obesity-related liver disease prevention and healing. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd

AB  - Background: Thyroid dysfunctions as well as sleep abnormalities are usually followed by neurological, psychiatric and/or behavioral disorders. On the other hand, changes in the brain adenosine triphosphatases (ATPases) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activities show significant importance in pathogenetic pathways in the evolution of numerous neuropsychiatric diseases. Methods: This study aimed to evaluate the in vivo simultaneous effects of hypothyroidism and paradoxical sleep deprivation for 72 h on synaptosomalATPases and AChE activities of whole rat brains. In order to induce hypothyroidism, 6-n-propyl-2-thiouracil was administrated in drinking water during 21 days. The modified multiple platform method was used to induce paradoxical sleep deprivation. The AChE and ATPases activities were measured using spectrophotometric methods. Results: Hypothyroidism significantly increased the activity of Na+/K+-ATPase compared to other groups, while at the same time significantly decreased AChE activity compared to the CT and SD groups. Paradoxical sleep deprivation significantly increased AChE activity compared to other groups. The simultaneous effect of hypothyroidism and sleep deprivation reduced the activity of all three enzymes (for Na+/K+-ATPase between HT/SD and HT group p < 0.0001, SD group p < 0.001,CT group p = 0.013; for ecto-ATPases between HT/SD and HT group p = 0.0034, SD group p = 0.0001, CT group p = 0.0007; for AChE between HT/SD and HT group p < 0.05, SD group p < 0.0001, CT group p < 0.0001). Conclusions: The effect of simultaneous existence of hypothyroidism and paradoxical sleep deprivation reduces the activity of the Na+/K+-ATPase, ecto-ATPases, and AChE, what is different from individual effect of hypothyroidism and paradoxical sleep deprivation itself. This knowledge could help in the choice of appropriate therapy in such condition. © 2023 Elsevier B.V.

Structure-dependent optical properties of Au/Ag irradiated TiN thin films

AB  - Titanium nitride (TiN) is an attractive alternative for modern and future photonic applications, as its optical properties can be engineered over a wide spectral range. In this study, we have used sequential implantation of gold and silver ions with varying ion fluence, as well as subsequent annealing, in order to modify the optical and plasmonic properties of TiN thin films and correlated this to their structural properties. Our investigations show that the columnar structure of the TiN films is partially destroyed upon implantation, but metallic Au and Ag nanoparticles are formed. The irradiation further induces a reduction of the lattice constant as well as changes the TiN stoichiometry and grain size. From the optical point of view, the implanted films possess less metallicity with increasing Ag fluence and losses several times lower than the as-deposited film, which can be correlated with the deficiency of nitrogen and additional defects. Subsequent annealing partially recovered the destroyed columnar structure, and the films become more metallic where the optical losses are much smaller in comparison to the as-implanted situation, being comparable to those of pure Au and Ag. In this way, by varying the implantation fluence of silver ions properly while keeping the gold fluence constant, we were able to optimize experimental parameters in such a way to ensure the formation of TiN with desirable optical performances.

As-spun fibers were smooth, straight and continuous, whilst EDS analysis confirmed the fiber composition and incorporation of dopants in the fibers. Doping with Sm3+ and Zr4+ greatly inhibited the phase transformation of anatase to rutile, by surrounding of Sm3+ ions through formation of Ti-O-Sm bonds and by replacement of Ti4+ ions with larger Zr4+ ions. This was confirmed by HRTEM and SAED analysis. The size of nanofibers was determined to be 133 nm, 175 nm and 155 nm for pure, (0.5%)Sm3+:TiO2 and (1%)Zr4+:TiO2, respectively. After calcination, TiO2 crystal lattice with interplanar spacing of 0.353 nm of (101) crystal plane was not significantly disturbed by Sm doping whilst crystal lattice spacing of 0.357 nm of (101) planes of anatase phase in case TiO2:1.0%Zr4+, significantly differs from the value of pure TiO2 (0.352 nm), thus implying that Zr was doped into substitutional sites of the TiO2 lattice. The indirect band gaps were calculated to be in the range 3.07–3.24 eV. TiO2:0.5%Sm3+ and TiO2:1.0%Zr4+ exhibited higher specific surface area, of 47.1 and 59.4 m2/g, respectively, than pure TiO2 fibers (19.7 m2/g). AB  - Background and Aim: Excessive fructose consumption along with a sedentary lifestyle provokes metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases. Fructose overload causes cardiac insulin resistance and increases reliance on fatty acid (FA) uptake and catabolism. The cardiometabolic benefits of exercise training have long been appreciated. The goal of the presented study is to shed a new light to the preventive role of exercise training on cardiac lipid metabolism in fructose-fed rats. Methods: Male Wistar rats were divided into control (C), sedentary fructose (F), and exercised fructose (EF) groups. Fructose was given as a 10% fructose solution in drinking water for 9 weeks. Low-intensity exercise training was applied for 9 weeks. The protein expression and subcellular localization of Lipin1, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α (PPARα), and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γcoactivator 1 α (PGC1) were analyzed in the heart using Western blot. Cardiac forkhead box transcription factor 1 (FOXO1) and sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) protein levels were also evaluated. Gene expression of long-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase was analyzed by quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Results: Exercise training has augmented the expression of main regulators of FA oxidation in the heart and achieves its effect by increasing the nuclear content of PPARα, Lipin1, and FOXO1 compared with the fructose group (P = 0.0422, P = 0.000045, P = 0.00958, respectively). In addition, Lipin1, FOXO1, and SIRT1 were increased in nuclear extract after exercise compared with the control group (P = 0.000043, P = 0.0417, P = 0.0329, respectively). In cardiac lysate, low-intensity exercise caused significantly increased protein level of PPARα, PGC1, FOXO1, and SIRT1 compared with control (P = 0.0377, P = 0.0275, P = 0.0096, P = 0.0282, respectively) and PGC1 level compared with the fructose group (P = 0.0417). High-density optical interconnects based on self-imaging in coupled waveguide arrays

AB  - Rapidly increasing demand for higher data bandwidths has motivated exploration of new communication channels based on spatially multiplexed in-fibre and on-chip coupled light guides. However, the conventionally used periodically arranged coupled waveguides display complicated light propagation patterns, ranging from quasiperiodic to nearly chaotic. Taking a different approach, we spectrally engineer interwaveguide coupling to instigate self-imaging of the input light state at the array output and thus enable construction of novel high-fidelity interconnects. Simple implementation via modulation of the interwaveguide separations makes these interconnects realizable in all fabrication platforms. Their competitive advantages are negligible crosstalk-induced information loss, high density that exceeds the current standards by an order of magnitude, and compatibility with both classical and quantum information encoding schemes. Moreover, the wavelength-dependent self-imaging opens up new possibilities for wavelength and spatial division demultiplexing. The proposed analytical designs are supported by extensive numerical simulations of silicon-on-insulator, silicon nitride and silica glass waveguide arrays, and a statistical feasibility study. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd

AB  - It is well known that geopolymers are a new group of binder materials of alumosilicate origin. Geopolymers are made by the reaction of precursor aluminosilicate materials with alkaline activator solutions. The current research relates to a low-cost and eco-friendly procedure, suitable of being implemented in two easy steps. The first step is the production of a solid phase based on fly ash (Obrenovac, Serbia) and eggshell ash as waste materials rich in calcium. The second step is alkali activating the solid phase using an alkaline activator (a mixture of NaOH and Na2SiO3) and procedures in proper laboratory conditions. Four samples with different eggshell ash content were synthesized. The concentration of used NaOH was 12 mol dm−3. The structural properties of all investigated samples were analyzed by XRD (X-ray diffraction), DRIFT (diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform), SEM (scanning electron microscopy) and UV/Vis spectroscopy analysis. XRD determined the amorphous halo with the presence of quartz as the crystal phase in all of the investigated samples. These results were confirmed by DRIFT analysis. The morphology of the samples was determined by SEM analysis. UV/Vis showed that the material could be a potential adsorbent.

Methionine Capped Nanoparticles as Acetylcholinesterase Inhibitors

AB  - The silver and gold L-methionine capped nanoparticles (Ag and Au @LM NPs) were analyzed as prospective acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitors to test their potential in the treatment of cognitive impairment in depression and Alzheimer's disease. The stability of NPs, and their ability to inhibit AChE were studied by UV-Vis and FTIR spectrophotometry. At the same time, TEM and SEM measurements, DLS, and zeta potential measurements were employed in the structural characterization of NPs. Nearly spherical, negatively charged Ag and Au @LM NPs, with 17 nm and 31 nm in diameter, respectively, showed moderate inhibitory potential toward AChE in the given frame of investigated concentrations. For both NPs IC50 is not reached. Furthermore, the adsorption of enzyme molecules on the surface of Ag and Au @LM NPs was demonstrated. abstract = "The silver and gold L-methionine capped nanoparticles (Ag and Au @LM NPs) were analyzed as prospective acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitors to test their potential in the treatment of cognitive impairment in depression and Alzheimer's disease. The stability of NPs, and their ability to inhibit AChE were studied by UV-Vis and FTIR spectrophotometry. At the same time, TEM and SEM measurements, DLS, and zeta potential measurements were employed in the structural characterization of NPs. Nearly spherical, negatively charged Ag and Au @LM NPs, with 17 nm and 31 nm in diameter, respectively, showed moderate inhibitory potential toward AChE in the given frame of investigated concentrations. For both NPs IC50 is not reached. Furthermore, the adsorption of enzyme molecules on the surface of Ag and Au @LM NPs was demonstrated. AB  - In recent years, deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have attracted considerable attention, and they have been applied in many fields, such as dissolution and separation, electrochemistry, materials preparation, reaction, and catalysis. In this paper, a detailed thermal decomposition mechanism of DES-type II (consisting choline chloride (ChCl) and magnesium chloride hexahydrate (MgCl2·6H2O) in a molar ratio 2:1 (MgCl2·6H2O-[Ch]Cl)) was explained, using thermal analysis techniques. Physicochemical clarification of overall thermal decomposition mechanism and the influence of enthalpy–entropy compensation (EEC) on reactions mechanism emerging are presented for the first time, in favor of this DES type. In the kinetic analysis of the decomposition process, two approaches were used: model-free (inverse) and model-based (direct) methods. It was found that thermodynamic principles in the form of EEC are the source of kinetic compensation effect (KCE) during MgCl2·6H2O-[Ch]Cl thermal decomposition, as a consequence of the effects of molecular interactions. Key phenomenon in the complex multiple step process represents a parallel dehydration steps of MgCl2·6H2O in DES, leading to formation of intermediates, such as [MgCl1(H2O)5]1+ and [MgCl2(H2O)4]. It was established that formation of final products (Mg(OH)2 and MgOHCl) requires a higher expenditure of energy to overcome a high potential barrier, where reaction system compensates this energy via hydrogen bonding disruption. This was confirmed by the identification of a specific ‘oscillator’, flagged as Hsingle bondOsingle bondH···Cl hydrogen bond donating system of the energy (“heat bath”). All kinetic parameters and mechanisms of individual reaction steps were confirmed by numerical optimization of the process and modulated dynamic predictions.

AB  - This work provides detailed mechanistic analysis of thermo-oxidative degradation behavior of vitamin D3—Ca (CaCO3 form) solid state supplement formulation. Analytical techniques such Attenuated Total Reflection Fourier-transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy and Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-MS) were used for analysis of homogeneity of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) throughout excipients contained within solid dosage forms. Information gained from MALDI-MS experiments was used to improve and better understand interactions present, later clearly disclosed through kinetic modeling. It was found that process mechanism proceeds via two single-step unbranched reactions and two steps of consecutive reactions. Key features include vitamin D3 meltings and degradation via hydrogen abstraction followed by addition of oxygen forming 1-hydroxy-vitamin D3 and further through its dehydration to 1-keto-vitamin D3. Identified product 1-hydroxy-vitamin D3 is substantial for enhancing the immune response of human body in fight against respiratory viruses. Another two degradation products, namely pyrocalciferol and isopyrocalciferol, produced by thermal isomerization at higher temperatures, were also identified. These vitamin epimers have crucial role in functioning of immune cells. Degradation process of mineral structure occurs through water molecules removal, forming anhydrous polymorph of CaCO3, where formation of solid (CaO) and gaseous (CO2) products participates in kinetically stabilized additive-functionalized amorphous CaCO3 crystallization. Confirmation of correctness of proposed degradation mechanism was verified by modulated dynamic (MD) predictions. Information obtained is valuable and suitable for safety evaluations of given supplement, but also could be applied for solid state forms, which are generally sensitive to oxidative conditions. © 2023, Akadémiai Kiadó, Budapest, Hungary.

AB  - In this work, we investigated the morphological and electrochemical properties of gallium/bismuth mixed oxide. The bismuth concentration was varied from 0 to 100%. The correct ratio was determined with inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES), while surface characteristics were determined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurement. Electrochemical characteristics were studied using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in the Fe2+/3+ couple. The obtained materials were tested for adrenaline detection. After square wave voltammetry (SWV) optimization, the best electrode showed a wide linear working range from 7 to 100 µM at pH 6 of the Britton–Robinson buffer solution (BRBS) supporting electrolyte. The limit of detection (LOD) for the proposed method was calculated as 1.9 µM, with a limit of quantification (LOQ) of 5.8 µM. The excellent selectivity of the proposed method, with good repeatability and reproducibility, strongly suggests the possible application of the procedure for the determination of adrenaline in artificially prepared real samples. The practical applicability with good recovery values indicates that the morphology of the materials is closely connected with other parameters, which further suggests that the developed approach can offer a low-cost, rapid, selective, and sensitive method for adrenaline monitoring. AB  - The study of Cu(II) from aqueous solutions using the adsorption process on synthetically modified geopolymers was performed under static conditions. Three geopolymers (based on metaphase of Serbian clay, metaphase of German clay and metaphase of German clay plus 10% of carbon cloth) were used. The geopolymers were made by condensing a mixture of metaphases and alkali activator solution at a fixed ratio at room temperature and then at a temperature of 60 °C in a dry oven. Then, the geopolymer samples were pre-crashed to a fixed-radius size. Their properties were characterized by X-ray diffractometry (XRD), Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transform (DRIFT) analysis and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS). Adsorption experiments were carried out under batch process as a function of the dose, concentration of metal, and contact time. The uptake of Cu(II) was rapid, and it increased with increasing metal concentration. The sorption percentage decreased with increasing concentration of Cu(II). The equilibrium adsorption capacity of geopolymers was measured and extrapolated using more isotherms. The data fit very well the linear Langmuir isotherm model. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model can well describe the adsorption behavior of Cu(II) ions with geopolymers samples. These results show that used geopolymers hold great potential to remove Cu(II) from industrial wastewater.

AB  - Presented study describes the optimization method of an HPGe detector through implementation of Geant4 toolkit. The optimized model was verified through comparison with experimentally obtained data using a set of point-like radioactive calibration sources. Acquired results displayed good agreement with the experimental data that falls under an average relative deviation of the order of ~ 2% within the energy range of 53–1836 keV. Additionally, in order to test the validity of the code it was also applied to a different detection equipment where an average relative deviation of the order of ~ 1.8% was achieved within the energy range of 121–1112 keV. © 2023, Akadémiai Kiadó, Budapest, Hungary.

AB  - Partial cation substitution can significantly change the physical properties of parent compounds. By controlling the chemical composition and knowing the mutual relationship between composition and physical properties, it is possible to tailor the properties of materials to those that are superior for desired technological application. Using the polyol synthesis procedure, a series of yttrium-substituted iron oxide nanoconstructs, γ-Fe2−xYxO3 (YIONs), was prepared. It was found that Y3+ could substitute Fe3+ in the crystal structures of maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) up to a limited concentration of ~1.5% (γ-Fe1.969Y0.031O3). Analysis of TEM micrographs showed that crystallites or particles were aggregated in flower-like structures with diameters from 53.7 ± 6.2 nm to 97.3 ± 37.0 nm, depending on yttrium concentration. To be investigated for potential applications as magnetic hyperthermia agents, YIONs were tested twice: their heating efficiency was tested and their toxicity was investigated. The Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) values were in the range of 32.6 W/g to 513 W/g and significantly decreased with increased yttrium concentration in the samples. Intrinsic loss power (ILP) for γ-Fe2O3 and γ-Fe1.995Y0.005O3 were ~8–9 nH·m2/Kg, which pointed to their excellent heating efficiency. IC50 values of investigated samples against cancer (HeLa) and normal (MRC-5) cells decreased with increased yttrium concentration and were higher than ~300 μg/mL. The samples of γ-Fe2−xYxO3 did not show a genotoxic effect. The results of toxicity studies show that YIONs are suitable for further in vitro/in vivo studies toward to their potential medical applications, while results of heat generation point to their potential use in magnetic hyperthermia cancer treatment or use as self-heating systems for other technological applications such as catalysis.

Diagnostics of laser-induced plasma from a thin film of oil on a silica wafer

AB  - In this study, plasma induced by a nanosecond Nd:YAG laser on thin oil films deposited on a silica wafer was characterized by evaluating the main plasma parameters. Spatially and temporally integrated spectral measurements were performed under experimental conditions optimized for elemental analysis of trace metals in oil. Time-resolved values of the spectral line intensities, electron number density, and plasma temperature were obtained from time-integrated measurements by subtracting averaged spectra recorded at different time delays. The electron number density was estimated using the Stark broadened profile of the hydrogen Balmer alpha line. Ionization temperatures were derived from Mg ionic to atomic line intensity ratios. The obtained apparent values of time-resolved plasma parameters were in the range of 1.1×1017 cm-3 (1.5 μs) to 1.5×1016 cm-3 (4 μs) and 9400 K (3 μs) to 7200 K (5 μs), depending on the delay time. Emission spectra of C2 and CN molecules were used to evaluate the rotational and vibrational temperature.

AB  - The increased commercial use and spread of nanoceria raises concerns about the risks associated with its effects on living organisms. Although Pseudomonas aeruginosa may be ubiquitous in nature, it is largely found in locations closely linked with human activity. P. aeruginosa san ai was used as a model organism for a deeper understanding of the interaction between biomolecules of the bacteria with this intriguing nanomaterial. A comprehensive proteomics approach along with analysis of altered respiration and production of targeted/specific secondary metabolites was conducted to study the response of P. aeruginosa san ai to nanoceria. Quantitative proteomics found that proteins associated with redox homeostasis, biosynthesis of amino acids, and lipid catabolism were upregulated. Proteins from outer cellular structures were downregulated, including transporters responsible for peptides, sugars, amino acids and polyamines, and the crucial TolB protein of the Tol-Pal system, required for the structural formation of the outer membrane layer. In accordance with the altered redox homeostasis proteins, an increased amount of pyocyanin, a key redox shuttle, and the upregulation of the siderophore, pyoverdine, responsible for iron homeostasis, were found. Production of extracellular molecules, e.g. pyocyanin, pyoverdine, exopolysaccharides, lipase, and alkaline protease, was significantly increased in P. aeruginosa san ai exposed to nanoceria. Overall, nanoceria at sublethal concentrations induces profound metabolic changes in P. aeruginosa san ai and provokes increased secretion of extracellular virulence factors, revealing the powerful influence this nanomaterial has on the vital functions of the microorganism. © 2023 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

AB  - Composites of carbons with metal oxides and metal sulfides have attracted a lot of interestas materials for energy conversion and storage applications. Herein, we report on novel N,O-dopedcarbon/ZnO/ZnS and N,O-doped carbon/ZnO composites (generally named C-(MOF-5/PANI)),synthesized by the carbonization of metal–organic framework MOF-5/polyaniline (PANI) composites.The produced C-(MOF-5/PANI)s are comprehensively characterized in terms of composition,molecular and crystalline structure, morphology, electrical conductivity, surface area, and electrochemicalbehavior. The composition and properties of C-(MOF-5/PANI) composites are dictated bythe composition of MOF-5/PANI precursors and the form of PANI (conducting emeraldine salt (ES)or nonconducting emeraldine base). The ZnS phase is formed only with the PANI-ES form due toS-containing counter-ions. XRPD revealed that ZnO and ZnS existed as pure wurtzite crystallinephases. PANI and MOF-5 acted synergistically to produce C-(MOF-5/PANI)s with high SBET (up to609 m2 g−1), electrical conductivity (up to 0.24 S cm−1), and specific capacitance, Cspec, (up to 238.2 Fg−1 at 10 mV s−1). Values of Cspec commensurated with N content in C-(MOF-5/PANI) composites (1–10 wt.%) and overcame Cspec of carbonized individual components PANI and MOF-5. By acid etchingtreatment of C-(MOF-5/PANI), SBET and Cspec increased to 1148 m2 g−1 and 341 F g−1, respectively.The developed composites represent promising electrode materials for supercapacitors.

However, given that the knowledge of these quantities requires a deep physical and mathematical analysis of the system, we seek a more "generic"diagnostic towards a manifestation of integrability breaking. AB  - Colloidal stabilization of magnetic nanoparticles is one of the most important steps in the preparation of magnetic nanoparticles for potential biomedical applications. A special kind of magnetic nanoparticle are barium hexaferrite nanoplatelets (BSHF NPLs) with a hexagonal shape and a permanent magnetic moment. One strategy for the stabilization of BHF in aqueous media is to use coatings. In our research, we used an eco-friendly tannic acid, as a coating on BSHF NPLs. As-prepared BSHF NPLs coated with tannic acid were examined with transmission electron microscopy, infrared and UV-Vis spectroscopy, electro-kinetic measurements, and their room-temperature magnetic properties were measured. Stable colloids were tested in two biological complex media and antimicrobial properties of the material were examined. To enhance the antimicrobial properties of our material, we used tannic acid as a platform for the in-situ production of silver on BSHF NPLs. New hybrid material with silver also possesses magnetic properties and excellent antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus.

AB  - Finding an effective drug to prevent or treat COVID-19 is of utmost importance in tcurrentpandemic. Since developing a new treatment takes a significant amount of time, drug repurposingcan be an effective option for achieving a rapid response. This study used a combined in silico virtualscreening protocol for candidate SARS-CoV-2 PLpro inhibitors. The Drugbank database was searchedfirst, using the Informational Spectrum Method for Small Molecules, followed by molecular docking.Gramicidin D was selected as a peptide drug, showing the best in silico interaction profile with PLpro.After the expression and purification of PLpro, gramicidin D was screened for protease inhibitionin vitro and was found to be active against PLpro. The current study’s findings are significantbecause it is critical to identify COVID-19 therapies that are efficient, affordable, and have a favorablesafety profile.

AB  - The aims of this research were preparation of Juglans nigra husk extracts by employing an ultrasonic-assisted extraction method and process optimization of minerals extraction using response surface methodology. Extracts from J. nigra L. fresh husk were prepared using ethanol (70%, v/v) as a solvent, at different extraction temperatures: 15, 30 and 40 °C, and extraction times: 5, 15, 30, 60 and 80 min. The content of minerals in ethanol extracts was determined using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). The response surface methodology (RSM) was developed to evaluate the effect of two extraction factors as well as to optimize the extraction variables for each mineral individually. The RSM models pointed out 40 °C temperature and extraction time in the range 77–80 min as optimal conditions for extraction of macro- and micro-elements. Results of RSM optimization showed the relative order of maximum obtained yield of macro-elements: K>P>S>Ca>Mg and maximum yield of micro-elements was Si>Zn>Sr>Cu.

AB  - The study aims to achieve a simple, reliable, and significant lifetime extension of the high-voltage asynchronous machine in relation to the voltage endurance test. To achieve this goal, the focus was on achieving longer-lasting and more stable insulation of the stator package of an asynchronous machine. Longer-lasting and more stable insulation of a stator is achieved by reinforcing the weak points on its prefabricated multiturn coils. These reinforcements were performed with standard insulating materials that are used for the production of the prefabricated multiturn coils (because there is no data regarding the long-term behavior of new materials that show some better properties in laboratories, but only during short-term tests). With such reinforced weak spots based on prefabricated models, they were made by the classical procedure with the use of standardized tools. To track the effects of the improvement of the insulation characteristics of a stator, an algorithm was developed based on the law of increasing probability and the determination of lifetime curves to the voltage endurance test. The lifetime curves were determined by the method of increasing voltage with the transformation of the obtained results to the corresponding results by the constant voltage method. The applied algorithm that was formed for this study, had been verified with statistical reliability of 95%. The combined measurement uncertainty of the measurement procedure was about 5%.

AB  - The increase of production and consumption persistently introduce different pollutants into the environment. The constant development and improvement of analytical methods for tracking environmental contaminants are essential. The demand for high sample throughput analysis has hit the spotlight for developing selective sensors to avoid time-consuming sample preparation techniques. In addition, the sensor’s sensitivity should satisfy the rigorous demands of harmful compound tracking. Molecularly imprinted plasmonic-based sensors are excellent candidates to overcome selectivity and sensitivity issues. Molecularly imprinted polymers are robust, stable in aqueous and organic solvents, stable at extreme pHs and temperatures, and include a low-cost synthesis procedure. Combined with plasmonic-based techniques, they are the perspective choice for applications in the field of environmental protection. Plasmonic-based sensors offer a lower limit of detection, a broad linearity range, high sensitivity, and high selectivity compared to other detection techniques. This review outlines the optical plasmonic detection of different environmental contaminants with molecularly imprinted polymers as sensing elements. The main focus is on the environmental pollutants affecting human and animal health, such as pesticides, pharmaceuticals, hormones, microorganisms, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, dyes, and metal particles. Although molecularly imprinted plasmonic-based sensors currently have their application mostly in the biomedical field, we are eager to point them out as a highly prospective solution for many environmental problems.

The demand for high sample throughput analysis has hit the spotlight for developing selective sensors to avoid time-consuming sample preparation techniques. In addition, the sensor’s sensitivity should satisfy the rigorous demands of harmful compound tracking. Molecularly imprinted plasmonic-based sensors are excellent candidates to overcome selectivity and sensitivity issues. Molecularly imprinted polymers are robust, stable in aqueous and organic solvents, stable at extreme pHs and temperatures, and include a low-cost synthesis procedure. Combined with plasmonic-based techniques, they are the perspective choice for applications in the field of environmental protection. Plasmonic-based sensors offer a lower limit of detection, a broad linearity range, high sensitivity, and high selectivity compared to other detection techniques. This review outlines the optical plasmonic detection of different environmental contaminants with molecularly imprinted polymers as sensing elements. The main focus is on the environmental pollutants affecting human and animal health, such as pesticides, pharmaceuticals, hormones, microorganisms, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, dyes, and metal particles. Although molecularly imprinted plasmonic-based sensors currently have their application mostly in the biomedical field, we are eager to point them out as a highly prospective solution for many environmental problems.",
