AB - Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) poses challenges in therapy due to the absence of target expression such as estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2). Frequently, the treatment of TNBC involves the combination of several therapeutics. However, an enhanced therapeutic effect can be also achieved within a single molecule. The efficacy of raloxifene can be improved by designing a raloxifene-based hybrid drug bearing a 2,2’-bipyridine moiety (2). Integration of platinum(II), palladium(II), and nickel(II) complexes into this structure dramatically changed the cytotoxicity. The platinum(II) dichloride complex 3 did not demonstrate any activity, while palladium(II) and nickel(II) dichloride complexes 4 and 5 exhibited various cytotoxic behavior towards different types of hormone-receptor positive (HR+) cancer and TNBC cell lines. The replacement of the two chlorido ligands in 3–5 with a dicarbollide (carborate) ion [C2B9H11] 2 resulted in reduced activity of compounds 6, 7, and 8. However, the palladacarborane complex 7 demonstrated higher selectivity towards TNBC. Furthermore, the mechanism of action was shifted from cytotoxic to explicitly cytostatic with detectable proliferation arrest and accelerated aging, characterized by senescenceassociated phenotype of TNBC cells. This study provides valuable insights into the development of hybrid therapeutics against TNBC.

AB - Compositionally complex transitional metal nitrides are possible candidates for ultra-high temperature usage and are known for their superior properties due to the high configuration entropy. It is often difficult to synthesize pure metal nitrides in bulk, due to significant oxygen contamination; hence, they are synthesized mainly as thin films through magnetron sputtering, chemical vapor deposition or surface nitridation of high entropy alloys. The present article reports on a single-phase compositionally complex ceramic, i.e., (Ti0.2Zr0.2Hf0.2Nb0.2Ta0.2)NxC1−x, that is synthesized for the first time by employing an organometallic precursor route and using a double ammonolysis process. A multidisciplinary approach is performed to study these compositionally complex nitride and carbonitride systems, including experimental and theoretical investigations.

AB - Clinical outcomes of several acute conditions, including myocardial infarction (MI), the most common cause of death, can be improved by timely diagnostics based on electrocardiography (ECG). However, current diagnostic technologies include a large number of wired ECG electrodes, which require accurate placement by trained personnel. The ideal ECG device would be suitable for self-measurement, i.e., would have a small number of electrodes, be mobile or portable, and provide an accurate diagnosis. However, these aims have not been met using the same device. A recently developed handheld ECG device with three quasi-orthogonal leads opened the door for mobile assessment of the three-dimensional cardiac vector by self-measurement. We hypothesize that the information provided is sufficient for accurate reconstruction of the 12-lead ECG. We propose a reconstruction algorithm based on the segment-by-segment 4-matrix (4M) transformation applied to the P wave, QRS complex, ST segment, and T wave. The accuracy of the 4M method was tested using data obtained from 64 healthy volunteers. The 4M method reconstructed the standard 12-lead ECG with a 0.96 mean cross-correlation for all leads and provided meaningful clinical results. A back-to-back comparative study demonstrated the superiority of the proposed method over the traditional EASI method. In addition, the results provide evidence of the capability of the 3-lead 4M technology to accurately reconstruct the full cardiac vector from a single measurement, which distinguishes it from competition. Although further clinical investigation is necessary, wireless operation and high accuracy make the proposed method potentially suitable for remote monitoring and self-assessment.

AB - In order to better predict the high aerosol concentrations associated with air pollution and climate change, a machine learning model was developed using transfer learning and the segmentation process of global satellite images. The main concept of transfer learning lies on convolutional neural networks and works by initializing the already trained model weights to better adapt the weights when the network is trained on a different dataset. The transfer learning technique was tested with the ResNet3D-101 model pre-trained from a 2D ImageNet dataset. This model has performed well for contrail detection to assess climate impact. Aerosol distributions can be monitored via satellite remote sensing. Satellites can monitor some aerosol optical properties like aerosol optical thickness. Aerosol optical thickness snapshots were the input dataset for the model and were obtained from NASA’s Terra-Modis satellite; the output images were segmented by comparing the pixel values with a threshold value of 0.8 for aerosol optical thickness. Hyperparameter optimization finds a tuple of hyperparameters that yields an optimal model that minimizes a predefined loss function on given independent data. The model structure was adjusted in order to improve the performance of the model by applying methods and hyperparameter optimization techniques such as grid search, batch size, threshold, and input length. According to the criteria defined by the authors, the distance domain criterion and time domain criterion, the developed model is capable of generating adequate data and finding patterns in the time domain. As observed from the comparison of relative coefficients for the criteria metrics proposed by the authors, ddc and dtc, the deep learning model based on ConvLSTM layers developed in our previous studies has better performance than the model developed in this study with transfer learning.

abstract = "In order to better predict the high aerosol concentrations associated with air pollution and climate change, a machine learning model was developed using transfer learning and the segmentation process of global satellite images. As observed from the comparison of relative coefficients for the criteria metrics proposed by the authors, ddc and dtc, the deep learning model based on ConvLSTM layers developed in our previous studies has better performance than the model developed in this study with transfer learning.",

AB - In this study, the idea of using a fully symmetric U-Net deep learning model for forecasting a segmented image of high global aerosol concentrations is implemented. As the forecast relies on historical data, the model used a sequence of the last eight segmented images to make the prediction. For this, the classic U-Net model was modified to use ConvLSTM2D layers with MaxPooling3D and UpSampling3D layers. In order to achieve complete symmetry, the output data are given in the form of a series of eight segmented images shifted by one image in the time sequence so that the last image actually represents the forecast of the next image of high aerosol concentrations. The proposed model structure was tuned by the new FOX metaheuristic algorithm. Based on our analysis, we found that this algorithm is suitable for tuning deep learning models considering their stochastic nature. It was also found that this algorithm spends the most time in areas close to the optimal value where there is a weaker linear correlation with the required metric and vice versa. Taking into account the characteristics of the used database, we concluded that the model is capable of generating adequate data and finding patterns in the time domain based on the ddc and dtc criteria. By comparing the achieved results of this model using the AUC-PR metric with the previous results of the ResNet3D-101 model with transfer learning, we concluded that the proposed symmetric U-Net model generates data better and is more capable of finding patterns in the time domain.

AB - The aim of this study is to explain the consequences of the occurrence of enthalpy–entropy compensation (EEC) and isoequilibrium relationship during slow pyrolysis of cigarette butt filters (CBFs), consisting cellulose acetate (AC) as the main component. By using model-free and model-based kinetic methods and thermodynamic calculations, the complete reaction mechanism and extrathermodynamic issues about investigated process are completely resolved. It was established that compensation phenomenon where isoequilibrium temperature occurs is a consequence of formation of low-entropy molecular structure (cellulose II) and breaking of hydrogen bonds. Consequently, it was concluded that mechanisms which include a formation of low-entropy molecular structure and H-bonds breakage enter the changes in both enthalpy and entropy, which compensate each other. For the cellulose II generation, it was necessary to invest energy which represents use up energy. This “wasted” energy turns into work for creation of cellulose II molecular structures, whereby additional energy was provided from “local” decomposition reactions (which were identified in the established process mechanism) that arise from pyrolysis of starting material. Therefore, it was concluded that for “local reactions”, a negative ΔS° value was identified, but for the global process, the entropy change retained a positive value. Considering thermodynamic effects manifested through compensation temperature found below glass transition temperature (Tg) in the undercooling conditions, it was concluded that small amounts of plasticizers affect reduction of free volume in the glassy state. Obtained results indicated a decrease in β-relaxation mode of cellulose acetate by an abatement of the polymer free volume.

AB - The ongoing progress in communications, broadcasting systems, and the electronic industry results in increased exposure to electromagnetic interference (EMI). The proliferation of electromagnetic waves pollution is attributed to the extensive use of electronic devices like mobile phones, Wi-Fi, and microwave ovens in everyday activities [1, 2]. The risk of EMI is especially highlighted for individuals with implanted active medical devices or profesionals working in close contact to this type of irradiation. EMI shielding materials with 30 dB shielding efficiency are deemed appropriate for commercial applications based on references. Therefore, there is a strong need for lightweight, elastic, stretchy, transparent, robust, and highly efficient shielding materials that are appropriate for textile manufacturing and equipment covering. Presented work investigated composite materials made of graphene oxides (GO) [3] and silver nanowires (AgNWs) and their effectivenes as EMI shielding materials. Composites were generated from GO with sheet sizes ranging from 150 to 2000 nm and flake thicknesses between 2 and 5 nm. The average thickness of the free-standing films was approximately 14.8 μm. The ratio of these nanomaterials was analysed to adjust the shielding effectiveness throughout a wide microwave frequency range up to 18 GHz. A shielding effectiveness of around 6.5 dB was recorded for the r-GO free-standing film.

AB - Quality control and assurance of mammography X-ray generators include usage of solid-state detectors and/or ionization chambers which are calibrated in standard reference radiation fields. IEC 61267:2005 standard defines reference mammography radiation fields for Mo/Mo anode/filtration, while various anode/filtration combinations are encountered in clinical mammography X-ray units. Not all Secondary Standard Dosimetry Laboratories have an X-ray generator with Mo/Mo radiation setup, thus traceability can be established only for the available anode/filter combinations which is commonly limited to W/Al. In this study, W/Al radiation fields were established under laboratory conditions by performing half-value layer measurements, and characterization of four solid-state detectors was performed. X-ray multimeter performance was evaluated in terms of energy response in the W/Al radiation fields. In the laboratory conditions the energy response of the dosimeters had larger deviation from unity for dosimeters without appropriate anode/filter combination selected in the software settings, even though most of the dosimeters had uniform relative response. Discrepancy in the response was further investigated by examining its variation induced by available detector software settings, and it was determined that the dosimeter response can vary up to 20 %. In clinical setup, half-value layer was determined, and detector performance was examined. Dosimeters were tested in clinical fields with Mo/Mo, Mo/Rh, W/Rh, W/Ag anode/filter combinations in the X-ray tube voltage range from 25 kV to 35 kV. For most clinical radiation fields, multi-element detectors had energy response deviation within ±5 %. The single-element detector had one software setting available and has exhibited strong energy dependence. Extensive testing of detector response such as presented in this paper allows for correction factor interpolation based on half-value layer.

AB - The valence band electronic structure of isolated silveriodide nanoparticles (AgI NP) was investigated by vacuum-ultravioletaerosol photoelectron spectroscopy using the velocity map imagingtechnique (VUV VMI-PES). The VUV VMI-PES results were obtainedfor polydisperse aerosol produced by aggregation of hydrocolloid ofsilver iodide particles 8 - 15 nm in size. The ionization energy of theAgI particles was found to be 6.0 ± 0.1 eV with respect to the vacuumlevel. The DFT calculations showed that the main contribution to thedensity of AgI electronic states in the valence region originates from I5p orbitals. The dependence of the asymmetry parameter on theelectron energy showed that the value of the characteristic energyloss of excited photoelectrons was 2.7 eV, which coincided with theband gap of the nanomaterial.

AB - In this paper, the influence of the measurement range on the prediction of thermoelastic and geometric properties of a thin aluminum sample obtained by solving the inverse photoacoustic problem using neural networks was analyzed. Tests of neural networks on theoretical photoacoustic signals showed that the accuracy of solving the inverse problem increases with the increase of the measurement range, which is in accordance with the theory of solving inverse problems. Tests on experimentally measured signals in a transmission experimental setup with an open photoacoustic cell, from which the influence of the transmission characteristic of the detector was removed, show the advantages of using narrow frequency bands. This result indicates the need for further investigations of both: the influence of the measuring chain on the recorded signal and the influence of additional processes and sample properties on the thermoelastic behavior of thin metal films.

AB - The effect of mammography measurement conditions was investigated to evaluate their impact on measurement uncertainties in clinical practice. The most prominent physical X-ray beam quantities i.e., air kerma, half-value layer, and X-ray tube voltage were examined by measuring the response of two ionization chambers and six X- ray multimeters (XMMs) of different models. Measurements were performed using several anode/filter combinations and both with and without the compression paddle in the X-ray beam. Maximum differences of higher than 6 % were found for all quantities when the dosimeter displayed value was compared with the reference value or the variation within the clinical anode/filter combinations Mo/Mo and Mo/Rh were considered. The study showed that the calibration procedure with the W/Al anode/filter combination was reliable only for ionization chambers, and the response of XMMs varies in such a way that the calibration coefficient cannot be predicted between various measurement conditions used in calibration and clinical practices. XMM calibrations are typically performed without a compression paddle in the beam, and the response of the XMM changes when radiation quality is slightly altered. If XMM specific data is not available, based on this study, an additional uncertainty of 2 % (k = 1) could be used as a typical estimate, at least for air kerma measurements. XMMs should be used for clinical measurements in mammography only with correct settings. If the correct settings are not available, the XMMs should not be used or used only with extreme caution.

AB - This study investigated the impact of climate conditions on the quality of essential oils extracted from Apiaceae fruits, specifically coriander (Coriandrum sativum var. microcarpum), aniseed (Pimpinella anisum), and annual caraway (Carum carvi var. annuum) grown at three distinct locations in Serbia over three consecutive years. Field experiments were conducted, and essential oils were extracted using a Clevenger-type apparatus followed by gas chromatographic–mass spectrometric analysis for compound identification. Weather conditions during the vegetation periods were recorded, and statistical analyses, including principal component analysis (PCA) and correlation analysis, were performed to assess the volatile compound compositions. Results indicate significant correlations among various compounds within each fruit type, with distinct patterns observed across different years. PCA further elucidates the influence of both year and sampling location on the chemical profiles of essential oils. Cluster analysis reveals clustering primarily based on the year of cultivation rather than geographical location, emphasizing the dominant role of weather conditions in shaping essential oil compositions. This study highlights the intricate relationship between climate conditions and the quality of essential oils in Apiaceae fruits, providing valuable insights for optimizing cultivation practices and enhancing essential oil production. In general, climate conditions strongly influence the coriander, anise, and annual caraway cultivation, and also essential oil quality.

AB - This study provides insight into benefits of thermo-chemical conversion of coal slag as recovery process into value-added products. This research involves kinetic analysis of process conducted through non-isothermal thermal analysis measurements, with additional raw material characterization. Kinetic results showed that decomposition proceeds through two consecutive reactions steps (first one, including anorthite P1‾ → I1‾ phase transition, and then production of incongruent melting product (ternary system: CaO⋅Al2O3⋅2SiO2 (CAS2), where viscosity of slag changes), and second one including dehydration and formation of meta-muscovite, and subsequently, thermal disruption of muscovite de-hydroxylated phase, which proceeds with breaking of octahedral Al–O bonds), and one single-step reaction (attributed to CO-reduction of hematite to magnetite). Thermodynamic results showed an existence of physically meaningful isokinetic temperature (Tiso), which corresponds to active vibrational frequency of surroundings of SiO2 reaction site, manifested through Si‒O bond weakening by catalytic reaction of freed hydroxide ion (OH􀀀 ). It was concluded that at temperature T = Tiso, the course of process loses its dependence on temperature and pressure, regulating changes between thermodynamic parameters, through enthalpy-entropy compensation (EEC) effect.

AB - This work examined the possibilities and limitations of model-free and model-based methods related to decrypting the kinetic complexity of multi-step thermo-oxidative degradation processes (as a testing system, a [4-(hydroxymethyl)phenoxymethyl] polystyrene resin was used), monitored by thermal analysis (TGA-DTG-DTA) techniques. It was found that isoconversional methods could successfully determine the correct number of process stages and presence of multiple reactions based on derived Ea(α) profiles and identify the negative dependence of the rate constant on the temperature. These methods could not overcome the problem that arose due to mass transfer limitations. The model-based method overcame more successfully the problem associated with mass transfer because its calculation machinery had capabilities for the correct solution of the total mass balance equation. However, a perfect fit with the experimental data was not achieved due to the dependence on the thermal history of the contribution (ctb.) of a given reaction step inside a fitting procedure cycle. On the other hand, through this approach, it was possible to estimate the rate-controlling steps of the process regarding the influence of the heating rate. It was found that for consecutive reaction mechanisms, the production of benzaldehyde and gases in high yields was controlled by the heating rate, where low heating rates were strongly recommended (≤10 K/min). Also, it was shown that the transport phenomenon may be also the rate-determining step (within the set of “intrinsic” kinetic parameters). It was also established that external heat transfer controls the overall rate, where the “pure” kinetic control regime had not been reached but was approached when lowering the temperature and size of the resin particles.

It was also established that external heat transfer controls the overall rate, where the “pure” kinetic control regime had not been reached but was approached when lowering the temperature and size of the resin particles.",

AB - Due to extensive food production, organophosphate pesticides (OPs) are widely utilized for crop protection, leading to their presence in the environment. The focus of this study was the design of an efficient aqueous biphasic system (ABS) strategy for OP removal, namely, malathion (MAL), azinphos-methyl (AZM), and chlorpyrifos (CHP) from water. Different ionic liquids (ILs) with symmetrical cations were selected as ABS phase- formers (tetrabutylphosphonium salicylate, tetrabutylammonium salicylate, 1,3-dibutylimidazolium dicyanamide, 1,3-dibutylimidazolium salicylate and 1,3-dibutylimidazolium bromide) with citrate salt as a salting-out agent. Initially, phase diagrams were determined, followed by partition studies revealing that the partition of MAL and CHP aligns with the IL- ABS formation trend, while the AZM partition is governed by specific interactions with ILs. For optimization studies, tetrabutylphosphonium-salicylate i.e. [TBP][Sal]-based ABS was chosen, due to obtained high extraction efficiencies of over 99.3 %. After establishing the effects of pH, temperature, tie-line length, and phase ratio on extraction performance, extraction of OPs from a real wastewater sample further confirmed the effectiveness of the designed method achieving complete removal of each pesticide. Furthermore, recovery of IL was achieved using an antisolvent method to precipitate CHP followed by IL-reuse in three consecutive cycles without efficiency decreased. Finally, it was demonstrated that [TBP][Sal] exhibits low cytotoxic potential, indicating that the presence of low amounts of this IL in aqueous media could be acceptable from ecotoxicological standpoint. This study showcased the exceptional potential of the proposed technology for the efficient and sustainable treatment of wastewater contaminated with OPs, affirming its capability to treat significant wastewater volumes.

AB - Gentiopicroside (Gp) and swertiamarin (Sm), secoiridoid glycosides commonly found in plants of the Gentianaceae family, differ in one functional group. They exhibit promising cytotoxic effects in cancer cell lines and overall protective outcomes, marking them as promising molecules for developing novel pharmaceuticals. To investigate potential variations in cellular sensitivity to compounds of similar molecular structures, we analyzed the mode of Gp and Sm induced cell death in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) after 48 h of treatment. The lowest tested concentration that significantly reduces cell viability, 50 μ M, was applied. Oxidative stress parameters were estimated by measuring the levels of prooxidative/antioxidative balance, lipid peroxidation products, and 8-oxo-7,8-dihydro-2-deoxyguanosine, while gene expression of DNA repair enzymes was evaluated by employing quantitative real-time PCR. Cellular morphology was analyzed by fluorescent microscopy, and immunoblot analysis of apoptosis and necroptosis-related proteins was used to assess the type of cell death induced by the treatments. The discriminatory impact of Gp/Sm treatments on apoptosis and necroptosis- induced cell death was evaluated by monitoring the cell survival in co-treatment with specific cell death inhibitors. Obtained results show greater cytotoxicity of Gp than Sm suggesting that variations in the molecular structures of the tested compounds can substantially affect their biological effects. Gp/Sm co-treatment with apoptosis and necroptosis inhibitors revealed a distinct, albeit non-specific mechanism of PBMCs cell death. Although the therapeutic may not directly cause a specific type of cell death, its extent can be pivotal in assessing the safety of therapeutic application and developing phytopharmaceuticals with improved features. Since phytopharmaceuticals affect all exposed cells, identification of cytotoxic mechanisms on PBMCs after Gp and Sm treatment is important for addressing the formulation and dosage of potential phytopharmaceuticals.

AB - The photoacoustic effect was explained more than half a century ago and has since been used to develop non-destructive and non-contact techniques for testing materials. Most existing experimental setups are time-consuming. In this paper, we deal with the development of time-resolved photoacoustics to use all the advantages of photoacoustic techniques in the development of real-time characterization of various samples. We propose a model for a time-resolved photoacoustic signal of thin samples measured in a gas-microphone setup with a minimal volume cell, assuming that the gas column in the cell can be shorter than the thermal diffusion length in air. The derived model additionally includes the influence of thermal relaxations and detector transfer function. We also suggest a methodology for inverse problem solving, i.e., to determine the sample properties from measured signals using the presented model. The model has been validated by comparing the model predictions with an experimentally measured signal for a thin metallic sample excited by an optical pulse train of a repetition rate of 12 Hz. The results obtained by the suggested inverse-problem solving methodology are in accordance with the literature, thus confirming the validity of the proposed methodology. We have shown that the proposed model and the methodology of inverse time-resolved photoacoustic problems give the same results as the widespread time-consuming frequency photoacoustic measurements. This means that the presented model and methodology enable the employment of low-frequency time-resolved gas-microphone photoacoustics in the real-time characterization of thin solids.

AB - Structural knowledge of protein assemblies in their physiological environment is paramount to understand cellular functions at the molecular level. Protein interactions from Imaging Complexes after Translocation (PICT) is a live-cell imaging technique for the structural characterization of macromolecular assemblies in living cells. PICT relies on the measurement of the separation between labelled molecules using fluorescence microscopy and cell engineering. Unfortunately, the required computational tools to extract molecular distances involve a variety of sophisticated software programs that challenge reproducibility and limit their implementation to highly specialized researchers. Here we introduce PyF2F, a Python-based software that provides a workflow for measuring molecular distances from PICT data, with minimal user programming expertise. We used a published dataset to validate PyF2F’s performance.

AB - The growing demand for agricultural products has led to the misuse of pesticides. Butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) prevents some pesticides from irreversibly inhibiting acetylcholinesterase (AChE), another enzyme crucial for neurotransmission. For our studies, we choose commonly used pesticides abamectin and boscalid. The Homo sapiens BChE was shown not to be a target for abamectins B1A and B1B either in silico or in vitro. Boscalid showed a worse Glide score (-6.88 kcal/mol) than the approved BChE inhibitor (2-((1-(benzenesulfonyl)-1H-indol-4-yl)oxy)ethyl)(benzyl)amine with an IC50 value of 0.473 μM (Glide score=-8.64 kcal/mol), so it is not surprising that its IC50 is significantly higher. This study highlights the protective role of BChE against certain pesticides.
