Measurement of the Higgs boson production rate in association with top quarks in final states with electrons, muons, and hadronically decaying tau leptons at √s=13Te

AB  - The rate for Higgs (H) bosons production in association with either one (t H) or two (t t ¯ H) top quarks is measured in final states containing multiple electrons, muons, or tau leptons decaying to hadrons and a neutrino, using proton–proton collisions recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 13Te by the CMS experiment. The analyzed data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 137fb-1. The analysis is aimed at events that contain H → W W , H → τ τ , or H → Z Z decays and each of the top quark(s) decays either to lepton+jets or all-jet channels. Sensitivity to signal is maximized by including ten signatures in the analysis, depending on the lepton multiplicity. The separation among t H , t t ¯ H , and the backgrounds is enhanced through machine-learning techniques and matrix-element methods. The measured production rates for the t t ¯ H and t H signals correspond to 0.92±0.19(stat)-0.13+0.17(syst) and 5.7±2.7(stat)±3.0(syst) of their respective standard model (SM) expectations. The corresponding observed (expected) significance amounts to 4.7 (5.2) standard deviations for t t ¯ H , and to 1.4 (0.3) for t H production. Assuming that the Higgs boson coupling to the tau lepton is equal in strength to its expectation in the SM, the coupling yt of the Higgs boson to the top quark divided by its SM expectation, κt=yt/ytSM, is constrained to be within - 0.9 < κt< - 0.7 or 0.7 < κt< 1.1 , at 95% confidence level. This result is the most sensitive measurement of the t t ¯ H production rate to date.

Critical assessment of protein intrinsic disorder prediction

AB  - Intrinsically disordered proteins, defying the traditional protein structure–function paradigm, are a challenge to study experimentally. Because a large part of our knowledge rests on computational predictions, it is crucial that their accuracy is high. The Critical Assessment of protein Intrinsic Disorder prediction (CAID) experiment was established as a community-based blind test to determine the state of the art in prediction of intrinsically disordered regions and the subset of residues involved in binding. A total of 43 methods were evaluated on a dataset of 646 proteins from DisProt. The best methods use deep learning techniques and notably outperform physicochemical methods. The top disorder predictor has F max = 0.483 on the full dataset and F max = 0.792 following filtering out of bona fide structured regions. Disordered binding regions remain hard to predict, with F max = 0.231. Interestingly, computing times among methods can vary by up to four orders of magnitude.

Properties of Self-compacting Concrete Produced with Biomass Wood Ash

AB  - The demand of the contemporary society for renewable energy sources lead to the increase of the bio-power plants. Accordingly, the amount of ash generated by burning the biomass is increased, and its disposal becomes a large environmental problem. The paper presents the research of potential use of biomass wood ash as a partial replacement for coal fly ash (10%, 20%, 30% and 40% of mass) in production of self-compacting concrete (SCC). The effects of biomass wood ash on the properties of SCC in fresh and hardened states have been examined, as well as on the properties of durability. Test results indicated that the biomass wood ash slightly reduces the flowability and passing ability of SCC, while its addition enhances the viscosity of SCC and significantly prevents segregation and bleeding. SCCs with the contents of biomass wood ash up to 20% have approximately same mechanical strength as the reference mixture. Biomass wood ash has no negative effect on the resistance of concrete to the action of water under pressure, but a decrease of freeze/thaw resistance with de-icing salt is detected as its contents increases. The addition of biomass wood ash into SCC increases the drying shrinkage in the initial period of drying (up to 14 days), and it is decreased in a later phase. © 2021, Strojarski Facultet. Could the level of nitrite/nitrate contribute to malignant thyroid nodule diagnostics?

AB  - Thyroid nodules are among highly prevalent thyroid diseases. To make a distinction between benign and malignant thyroid nodules are of cumbersome significance for each endocrinologist. There is no unique and completely accurate diagnostic test, method, or even biomarker that points to a malignant thyroid nodule. Many studies in modern thyroidology are conducted to determine the usefulness of individual biomarkers, which could help clinicians detect thyroid nodules' potential malignant nature. One interesting biomarker with a promising diagnostic potential for the thyroid gland pathological conditions is nitric oxide (NO). Inducible nitric oxide synthase expression is increased in thyroiditis cases and even more in thyroid carcinoma cases, directly connected with increased NO levels in both pathological conditions. We hypothesize that the basal levels of nitrite/nitrate in serum and biopsy washout could indicate nodules' malignant nature.

AB  - A series of Fe3-xGdxO4 (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2) nanoparticles with an average diameter of around 8 nm were prepared by the coprecipitation method and coated by citric acid (CA). The nanoparticles show superparamagnetic behavior at room temperature and transition to a blocked state, at a temperature from ~ 89 K to ~ 213 K, depending on Gd concentration. The saturation magnetization of Fe3-xGdxO4 tended to drop for samples with a higher content of Gd. High colloidal stability is mandatory in medical applications of magnetic nanoparticles, and here we demonstrate a new procedure for its improvement. A colloidal sample of Fe3O4@CA was mechanically milled, after which dynamic light scattering and zeta potential measurements were used to monitor the hydrodynamic size and colloidal stability of the acquired suspensions. After 90 min of milling, the average hydrodynamic diameter decreased by 40%, and size distribution changed from polymodal to monomodal, while the negative zeta potential increased from − 30.5 mV to − 52.8 mV. Additionally, Fe2.80Gd0.20O4@CA nanoparticles were embedded in human serum albumin to produce magnetic microspheres (MMS), which could be used as a drug delivery platform. AB  - The Salerno model constitutes an intriguing interpolation between the integrable Ablowitz-Ladik (AL) model and the more standard (nonintegrable) discrete nonlinear Schrödinger (DNLS) one. AB  - Building integrated photovoltaics modules provide a high degree of design possibilities and additional functionalities in combination with the plain electricity generation well known for standard photovoltaic installations. Consequently, the specialized know-how to understand building integrated photovoltaics, properly design and manufacture them requires much more than the electrical knowledge developed and applied in standard photovoltaic systems. Expertise of building physics and building regulations are also required on a high level. As building integrated photovoltaics modules are usually custom designed, typical electrical design and simulationols cannot be used without modifications, while deeper insight of complex shading influences and specialized overall system design are advantageous. Authors of this publication were involved in well over 1000 building integrated photovoltaics system designs and developments, and their experiences are shared. Recurring questions, issues and mistakes of various building integrated photovoltaics projects are touched, whereas special emphasis is provided on building integrated photovoltaics engineering procedures, system design complexity, as well as shading issues and differentiation of shading according to their origin.

AB  - Ferromagnetism in Hf6Co23 intermetallic alloy at room temperature has been confirmed from perturbed angular correlation measurements using 181Hf probe. The strength of hyperfine magnetic field at room temperature for this intermetallic compound has been found to be Bhf=2.5(2) T while the earlier report of hyperfine magnetic field in Hf6Co23 has discrepancy. The hyperfine magnetic field at Ta impurity site has also been calculated by density functional theory and the result is found to be Bhf=-4.964 T (at 0 K). This value is closer to the present experimental value measured at 298 K. The compound Hf6Co23 has been found to decompose reversibly to Hf2Co7 at 473 K. Ferromagnetism in this material has been found up to 423 K and its Curie temperature is, therefore, set as TC&gt;423 K. From recent measurements by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, electron probe microanalysis and differential scanning calorimetry, Hf6Co23 was reported to be stable in a wide range of temperature and there was no phase existence of Hf2Co7 while the previous reported phase diagram showed a decomposition of Hf6Co23 to Hf2Co7 at a higher temperature. © 2021 Elsevier B.V.

AB  - Resultsof Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) are reported for lithium-niobium-titanium-oxide (LNTO) ceramics synthesized by a solid-state reaction method with two functional additives (MoO3 or ZnO) in the temperature range 323 K - 573 K and frequencies between 10−1 Hz and 107 Hz. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) reveals a textured morphology of rod and plate-like particles that are typical for M-phase LNTO materials, while X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirms the formation of an M-phase member compound with an approximate structure of Li7Nb3Ti5O21. Complex impedance analysis indicates that its overall electrical resistivity behavior depends mostly on the grain boundary processes. EIS analysis shows a negative temperature coefficient of resistance behavior (NTCR) in a defined temperature range in two LNTOs and thermal activation of the conduction mechanisms. The low dielectric constants of 5.5 and 12.1 at 1 MHz were found for the first and second LNTOs, respectively. Complimentary Raman spectroscopic measurements, despite very large crystallographic unit cell of LNTO, reveal only a small number of lines, which is the consequence of a “molecular” nature of materials.

Vendor‐independent skin dose mapping application for interventional radiology and cardiology

AB  - Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to present and validate an originally developed application SkinCare used for skin dose mapping in interventional procedures, which are associated with relatively high radiation doses to the patient’s skin and possible skin reactions. Methods: SkinCare is an application tool for generating skin dose maps following interventional radiology and cardiology procedures using the realistic 3D patient models. Skin dose is calculated using data from Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) Radiation Dose Structured Reports (RDSRs). SkinCare validation was performed by using the data from the Siemens Artis Zee Biplane fluoroscopy system and conducting “Acceptance and quality control protocols for skin dose calculating software solutions in interventional cardiology” developed and tested in the frame of the VERIDIC project. XR-RV3 Gafchromic films were used as dosimeters to compare peak skin doses (PSDs) and dose maps obtained through measurements and calculations. DICOM RDSRs from four fluoroscopy systems of different vendors (Canon, GE, Philips, and Siemens) were used for the development of the SkinCare and for the comparison of skin dose maps generated using SkinCare to skin dose maps generated by different commercial software tools (Dose Tracking System (DTS) from Canon, RadimetricsTM from Bayer and RDM from MEDSQUARE). The same RDSRs generated during a cardiology clinical procedure (percutaneous coronary intervention—PCI) were used for comparison. Results: Validation performed using VERIDIC's protocols for skin dose calculation software showed that PSD calculated by SkinCare is within 17% and 16% accuracy compared to measurements using XR-RV3 Gafchromic films for fundamental irradiation setups and simplified clinical procedures, respectively. Good visual agreement between dose maps generated by SkinCare and DTS, RadimetricsTM and RDM was obtained. Conclusions: SkinCare is proved to be very convenient solution that can be used for monitoring delivered dose following interventional procedures. © 2021 The Authors. AB  - Interventional procedures in radiology and cardiology are associated with high dose to the patient. Accurate dosimetry is essential and calibration of the equipment is a means to provide the necessary accuracy of dose assessment. The objective of this work is to investigate the performance of dosimeters used in interventional procedures in different standard and non-standard X-ray radiation qualities, and to investigate potential uncertainties related to dose measurements, thus improving accuracy of patient dosimetry in interventional procedures. Four new reference radiation qualities dedicated to interventional cardiology applications have been established, allowing calibration of dosimeters used in clinical conditions with appropriate traceability to primary standards. Testing of solid-state semiconductor detectors and thermoluminescent dosimeter properties, e.g. influence of photon energy, angle of incidence and dose rate, was performed in the standard and non-standard radiation qualities. Both dosimeter types showed good performance in the non-standard beams during all performance tests. Solid-state dosimeters displayed weak dependence on energy, angle of incidence and dose rate, in the range defined by the manufacturer and requirements of the international standard. Thermoluminescent dosimeters displayed excellent linearity and angular dependence. The influence of energy dependence on measurement uncertainty can be reduced if appropriate radiation quality is selected for calibration. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd

AB  - A search for phenomena beyond the standard model in final states with two oppositely charged same-flavor leptons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The search uses a data sample of proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb−1, collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. Three potential signatures of physics beyond the standard model are explored: an excess of events with a lepton pair, whose invariant mass is consistent with the Z boson mass; a kinematic edge in the invariant mass distribution of the lepton pair; and the nonresonant production of two leptons. The observed event yields are consistent with those expected from standard model backgrounds. The results of the first search allow the exclusion of gluino masses up to 1870 GeV, as well as chargino (neutralino) masses up to 750 (800) GeV, while those of the searches for the other two signatures allow the exclusion of light-flavor (bottom) squark masses up to 1800 (1600) GeV and slepton masses up to 700 GeV, respectively, at 95% confidence level within certain supersymmetry scenarios.

AB  - Measurements are presented of differential cross sections for the production of Z bosons in association with at least one jet initiated by a charm quark in pp collisions at s = 13 TeV. The data recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb−1. The final states contain a pair of electrons or muons that are the decay products of a Z boson, and a jet consistent with being initiated by a charm quark produced in the hard interaction. Differential cross sections as a function of the transverse momentum pT of the Z boson and pT of the charm jet are compared with predictions from Monte Carlo event generators. The inclusive production cross section 405.4 ± 5.6 (stat) ± 24.3 (exp) ± 3.7 (theo) pb, is measured in a fiducial region requiring both leptons to have pseudorapidity |η| < 2.4 and pT> 10 GeV, at least one lepton with pT> 26 GeV, and a mass of the pair in the range 71–111 GeV, while the charm jet is required to have pT> 30 GeV and |η| < 2.4. These are the first measurements of these cross sections in proton-proton collisions at 13 TeV.

Assuming all other Higgs boson couplings are equal to their values in the standard model, the observed coupling modifiers of the trilinear Higgs boson self-coupling κλ and the coupling between a pair of Higgs bosons and a pair of vector bosons c2V are constrained within the ranges −3.3 < κλ< 8.5 and −1.3 < c2V< 3.5 at 95% confidence level. Constraints on κλ are also set by combining this analysis with a search for single Higgs bosons decaying to two photons, produced in association with top quark-antiquark pairs, and by performing a simultaneous fit of κλ and the top quark Yukawa coupling modifier κt.

Utilization of Marine Waste to Obtain β-Chitin Nanofibers and Films from Giant Humboldt Squid Dosidicus gigas

AB  - β-chitin was isolated from marine waste, giant Humboldt squid Dosidicus gigas, and further converted to nanofibers by use of a collider machine under acidic conditions (pH 3). The FTIR, TGA, and NMR analysis confirmed the efficient extraction of β-chitin. The SEM, TEM, and XRD characterization results verified that β-chitin crystalline structure were maintained after mechanical treatment. The mean particle size of β-chitin nanofibers was in the range between 10 and 15 nm, according to the TEM analysis. In addition, the β-chitin nanofibers were converted into films by the simple solvent-casting and drying process at 60 °C. The obtained films had high lightness, which was evidenced by the CIELAB color test. Moreover, the films showed the medium swelling degree (250–290%) in aqueous solutions of different pH and good mechanical resistance in the range between 4 and 17 MPa, depending on film thickness. The results obtained in this work show that marine waste can be efficiently converted to biomaterial by use of mild extractive conditions and simple mechanical treatment, offering great potential for the future development of sustainable multifunctional materials for various industrial applications such as food packaging, agriculture, and/or wound dressing.

Hydrogen Evolution on Reduced Graphene Oxide-Supported PdAu Nanoparticles

AB  - Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) was investigated on reduced graphene oxide (rGO)-supported Au and PdAu nanoparticles in acid solution. The graphene spread over glassy carbon (rGO/GC) was used as a support for the spontaneous deposition of Au and Pd. The resulting Au/rGO and PdAu/rGO electrodes were characterized using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques. Phase AFM images have shown that the edges of the rGO sheets were active sites for the deposition of both Au and Pd. XPS analysis revealed that the atomic percentages of both Au and PdAu nanoparticles were slightly higher than 1%. The activity of the PdAu/rGO electrode for the HER was remarkably high, with the overpotential close to zero. HER activity was stable over a 3 h testing time, with a low Tafel slope of approx. −46 mV/dec achieved after prolonged hydrogen evolution at a constant potential.

Cytotoxic activities of Hypericum perforatum L. extracts against 2D and 3D cancer cell models

AB  - Six extracts were obtained from plant species Hypericum perforatum L., collected at Samsun in Turkey. The aim of this study was to examine the mechanisms of the anticancer activity of these extracts. Methanol, ethyl-acetate and hexane were used as a solvents for extraction from both branch-body part of the plant (extracts 1, 2 and 3) and from plant flowers (extracts 4, 5 and 6). The cytotoxic effects of the extracts were determined against 2D and 3D cancer cell models. Cell cycle changes of treated HeLa cells were analyzed by flow cytometry. Measurements of gene and microRNA expression levels in treated HeLa cells were done by quantitative real time PCR. Five examined extracts (2–6) exerted selective concentration-dependent cytotoxic effects on HeLa, K562, and A549 cancer cells, while the extract 1 exhibited very weak cytotoxicity. The extract 6 showed the highest intensity of cytotoxic activity. All tested extracts (2–6) demonstrated the ability to induce apoptosis in HeLa cells through activation of caspase-3. These extracts remarkably decreased gene expression levels of MMP2, MMP9, TIMP3, and VEGFA in HeLa cells. Flower extracts might have stronger effects on miR128/193a-5p/335 level changes than branch-body extracts. Hypericum perforatum extracts exerted weaker cytotoxic effects on 3D HeLa spheroids when compared with their effects on 2D monolayer HeLa cells. AB  - Structural changes at the molecular level, occurring at the onset of condensation, can be probed by angle-resolved valence photoelectron spectroscopy, which is inherently sensitive to the electronic structure. For larger condensed systems like aerosol particles, the observation of intrinsic angular anisotropies in photoemission (β parameters) is challenging due to the strong reduction of their magnitude by electron transport effects. Here, we use a less common, more sensitive observable in the form of the chiral asymmetry parameter to perform a comparative study of the VUV photoelectron spectroscopy and photoelectron circular dichroism (PECD) between pure gas phase enantiomers of the amino acid serine and their corresponding homochiral nanoparticles. We observe a relatively large (1%) and strongly kinetic energy-dependent asymmetry, discussed in terms of the emergence of local order and conformational changes potentially counterbalancing the loss of angular information due to electron transport scattering. This demonstrates the potential of PECD as a sensitive probe of the condensation effects from the gas phase to bulk-like chiral aerosol particles surpassing the potential of conventional photoemission observables such as β parameters. ©

AB  - The unbound proton-rich nuclei 16F and 15F are investigated experimentally and theoretically. Several experiments using the resonant elastic scattering method were performed at GANIL with radioactive beams to determine the properties of the low lying states of these nuclei. Strong asymmetry between 16F–16N and 15F–15C mirror nuclei is observed. The strength of the nucleon- nucleon effective interaction involving the loosely bound proton in the s1 / 2 orbit is significantly modified with respect to their mirror nuclei 16N and 15C. The reduction of the effective interaction is estimated by calculating the interaction energies with a schematic zero-range force. It is found that, after correcting for the effects due to changes in the radial distribution of the single-particle wave functions, the mirror symmetry of the n- p interaction is preserved between 16F and 16N, while a difference of 63% is measured between the p- p versus n- n interactions in the second excited state of 15F and 15C nuclei. AB  - p-Disubstituted phenyldiketopiperazines 1 (R = H), 2 (R = NO2) and 3 (R = -N(CH3)2) were synthesized and characterized by NMR in solution and IR spectroscopy. The identity of the compounds was confirmed and their fragmentation analyzed by ESI-MS and HRMS spectrometry. X-ray single crystal structures revealed that the three compounds crystallize in space groups P21 (1), Pbca (2) and P21/c (3), respectively. The solid-state structures of 1–3 were further analyzed by a combination of solid-state NMR spectroscopy and GIPAW calculations. The NMR crystallography approach was used to analyze symmetry breaking of nearly centrosymmetric molecules in 1, and disorder of piperazine groups in crystal structure of 3. © 2021 Elsevier B.V.

Search for dark photons in Higgs boson production via vector boson fusion in proton-proton collisions at √s = 13 TeV

AB  - A search is presented for a Higgs boson that is produced via vector boson fusion and that decays to an undetected particle and an isolated photon. The search is performed by the CMS collaboration at the LHC, using a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 130 fb −1, recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV in 2016–2018. No significant excess of events above the expectation from the standard model background is found. The results are interpreted in the context of a theoretical model in which the undetected particle is a massless dark photon. An upper limit is set on the product of the cross section for production via vector boson fusion and the branching fraction for such a Higgs boson decay, as a function of the Higgs boson mass. For a Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV, assuming the standard model production rates, the observed (expected) 95% confidence level upper limit on the branching fraction is 3.5 (2.8)%. This is the first search for such decays in the vector boson fusion channel. Combination with a previous search for Higgs bosons produced in association with a Z boson results in an observed (expected) upper limit on the branching fraction of 2.9 (2.1)% at 95% confidence level.
