AB - Electrochemical and structural properties of LiV2O5 cathode were investigated. Obtained by solid state reaction at high temperature the material crystallized as gamma polymorph phase, γ-LiV2O5. The gamma structure provides two crystallographic sites to accommodate lithium ions, Li1 and Li2 position. Lithium insertion at these two sites occurs at two respective voltages versus lithium metal: ~3.6 V (Li1) and ~2.4 V (Li2). Intercalation at Li1 position is reversible in both organic and aqueous electrolyte and provides stable cycling performance at the high voltage. On the contrary, sluggish insertion/removal of Li+ at Li2 sites causes unstable performance and significant storage capacity fade at lower voltages. Lithium diffusion 3d landscape was determined by bond valence calculations applied on the γ-LiV2O5 phase, as well as on the metastable phases of γ′-V2O5 and ζ-Li2V2O5 that exist at high and low voltages respectively. The model was proposed based on inactivity of Li2 position of the metastable ζ-Li2V2O5 phase which provides explanation for the observed storage capacity loss at low voltages. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l.

AB - Abstract: Subject of this study is a theoretical investigation of the channeling of high energy protons with the radially deformed triple-wall carbon nanotubes (TWNTs). Specifically, we chose a proton energy of 1 GeV and perfect and the radially deformed TWNTs (15, 0)@(10, 0)@(5, 0) of radial strengths η= 0.1 , 0.2 and 0.3. We presented the channeling potential within the perfect and deformed TWNTs and corresponding spatial and angular distributions of channeled protons. We treated the problem relativistically. We also analyzed the case where proton beams enter nanotube under different incidence angles. We analyzed two cases L= 1 and 5 μm. We also varied the value of incidence angle of proton beam and calculated the efficiency of nanotube channeling. This is the first time that we presented spatial and angular distributions of channeled protons with radially deformed TWNTs with angular effect of proton beam, and also, for the first time we presented their channeling efficiency. Our results show that the spatial and angular distributions depend strongly on the nanotube lengths, incident angle of the proton beam, and on the level of radial deformation of nanotube. Multi-wall nanotubes (MWNTs) are better candidates for realization of ion guiding than single-wall nanotubes (SWNTs) because it is easier to produce them straight. Also, deformation of the nanotube and the incident proton beam under some initial angle with respect to the nanotube axes represent realistic situation. That is why we believe that these results may be useful for production and guiding of nanosized ion beams by nanotubes. AB - Graphene is an excellent material to anchor metal nanoparticles due to its large surface area. In this paper, we report the use of electrochemically exfoliated graphene as support to anchor gold nanoparticles (Au NPs). Au NPs are synthesized via the reduction of chloroauric acid under gamma irradiation at low doses of 1, 5, and 10 kGy and directly deposited onto the graphene surface, making this procedure simple and fast. Good water dispersibility of exfoliated graphene, due to the presence of oxygen-containing functional groups in the structure of graphene, provides long-term stability of Au NPs - graphene composite dispersions. The majority of the Au NPs obtained by this method have sizes of up to 40 nm, while the increase in the applied dose leads to an increase in the amount of smaller nanoparticles. The increase of temperature of the prepared composite material upon irradiation with an 808 nm continuous wave laser was monitored. All samples show a temperature increase between 21.5 and 25.6 °C for 10 min of the laser exposure, which indicates that Au NPs - graphene composite can effectively be used in photothermal treatment for cancer therapy. © 2021 Elsevier Inc.

AB - Therapy of bacterial urinary tract infections (UTIs) and catheter associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) is still a great challenge because of the resistance of bacteria to nowadays used antibiotics and encrustation of catheters. Bacterial cellulose (BC) as a biocompatible material with a high porosity allows incorporation of different materials in its three dimensional network structure. In this work a low molecular weight chitosan (Chi) polymer is incorporated in BC with different concentrations. Different characterization techniques are used to investigate structural and optical properties of these composites. Radical scavenging activity test shows moderate antioxidant activity of these biocompatible composites whereasin vitrorelease test shows that 13.3% of chitosan is released after 72 h. Antibacterial testing of BC-Chi composites conducted on Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria causing UTIs and CAUTIs (Escherichia coli,Pseudomonas aeruginosa,Klebsiella pneumoniae) and encrustation (Proteus mirabilis) show bactericidal effect. The morphology analysis of bacteria after the application of BC-Chi shows that they are flattened with a rough surface, with a tendency to agglomerate and with decreased length and width. All obtained results show that BC-Chi composites might be considered as potential biomedical agents in treatment of UTIs and CAUTIs and as a urinary catheter coating in encrustation prevention.

AB - Bacterial infection and their resistance to known antibiotics delays wound healing. In this study, nanochitosan dots (nChiD) produced by gamma irradiation have been encapsulated in bacterial cellulose (BC) polymer matrix to study the antibacterial potentials of these nanocomposites and their possible usage in wound healing treatment (scratch assay). Detailed analyses show that nChiDs have disc-like shape and average diameter in the range of 40 to 60 nm depending of the applied dose. All nChiDs as well as BC-nChiD nanocomposites emit green photoluminescence independently on the excitation wavelengths. The new designed nanocomposites do not have a cytotoxic effect; antioxidant analysis shows their moderate radical scavenging activity whereas antibacterial properties show significant growth inhibition of strains mostly found in difficult-to-heal wounds. The obtained results confirm that new designed BC-nChiD nanocomposites might be potential agent in wound healing treatment. © 2021 Elsevier B.V.

AB - The introduction of additional functionalities to materials is exceptionally important as it opens new applications for them. Aluminum, one of the most abundant and important materials, is coated with luminescent Sm2+-doped γ-aluminium oxide to impart thermometric functionality. Considering the potential industrial applications, two of the most widely used aluminum alloys, 6061 and 7075, are also coated. For this purpose, plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO), an effective technique for producing hard ceramic coatings on various metal surfaces, is used. It is shown that thermometric coatings can be produced on aluminum in one-step process by adding the raw precursor to the electrolyte. The valence reduction of Ln3+ to Ln2+ is achieved during the PEO process. The intense and broad (orange to deep red) emission from the coating shows supersensitivity to temperature changes over the 100–648 K range. The temperature is obtained from the coating emission using i) the emission intensity ratio method, ii) emission lifetime, and iii) emission band position with sensitivities of 4.8% K−1, 1.2% K−1, and 8 cm−1 K−1, respectively. Several applications would benefit from the thermometric coating's excellent temperature resolution of 0.04 K and the choice of three temperature read-outs that facilitate the coating's use in different luminescence thermometry setups. © 2021 Wiley-VCH GmbH

abstract = "The introduction of additional functionalities to materials is exceptionally important as it opens new applications for them. © 2021 Wiley-VCH GmbH",

AB - We are investigating the quantum dynamics of a well-collimated electron beam transmitting through planar channels of the Si crystal. Electron states were represented by wave packets while the electron beam is treated as an ensemble of noninteracting wave packets. We have investigated the relationship between classical caustic pattern and anharmonicity of the potential and analyzed how quantum dynamic depends on the wave packet impact parameter and beam's angular divergence. We found that the extrema of the electron trajectory period, considered as a function of the impact parameter, determine the shape of the caustic pattern. All wave packet probability densities have multiple maxima generated by a self-interference. Their sum, that represents probability density of an ensemble, was found to depends strongly on the beam angular divergence. For small divergence, most peaks of different wave packets are aligned causing wavelike behavior of the ensemble. For moderate angular divergence maxima of some wave packets, are aligned with minima of others, resulting in the emergence of the classical caustic pattern. We have shown and experimentally confirmed that the only indication that the observed caustic pattern is generated by the quantum dynamics is a slight systematic shift of the corresponding caustic maxima. © 2021 American Physical Society.

AB - Advanced efficient energy conversion technology using clean alternative fuel contributes to the alleviation of the energy crisis and environmental deterioration. In this situation, a novel methanol utilization technology for power generation based on hybrid fuel cell system is proposed in this work. The hybrid system consists of a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC), a gas processing unit (GP) and a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). Thermodynamic analysis of the system shows that the energy conversion efficiency and exergy efficiency are both higher than the previously reported standalone or hybrid energy systems using methanol as fuel, which are 66.2% and 54.2% respectively. Besides, no recirculation ratio of anode off-gas and moderate fuel utilization of about 0.5 are suggested for the SOFC component to balance the power distribution and improve the efficiency. Afterwards, this hybrid fuel cell system is also investigated from thermo-economic and techno-economic perspectives. Take Northwest China as a case, the 1 MWe methanol-fed power plant has a specific electric energy cost of 0.5594 CNY/kWh, much lower than the methanol steam reforming-PEMFC power plant (2.4 CNY/kWh). At the same time, the sensitivity analyses reveal that the cost of the hybrid power system is not sensitive to the market price fluctuation. With financial subsidies for existing renewable power plants, the payback period can be shortened to 1.4 year and the annual return on investment is about 3.58%. These results reveal that this two-stage fuel cell hybrid system is a kind of efficient and economically methanol to power conversion technology, especially for small power scale. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd

AB - Advanced biogas power generation technology has been attracting attentions, which contributes to the waste disposal and the mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions. This work proposes and models a novel biogas-fed hybrid power generation system consisting of solid oxide fuel cell, water gas shift reaction, thermal swing adsorption and proton exchange membrane fuel cell (SOFC-WGS-TSA-PEMFC). The thermodynamic, exergetic, and thermo-economic analyses of this hybrid system for power generation were conducted to comprehensively evaluate its performance. It was found that the novel biogas-fed hybrid system has a gross energy conversion efficiency of 68.63% and exergy efficiency of 65.36%, indicating high efficiency for this kind of hybrid power technology. The market sensitivity analysis showed that the hybrid system also has a low sensitivity to market price fluctuation. Under the current subsidy level for the distributed biogas power plant, the levelized cost of energy can be lowered to 0.02942 $/kWh for a 1 MW scale system. Accordingly, the payback period and annual return on investment can reach 1.4 year and about 20%, respectively. These results reveal that the proposed hybrid system is promising and economically feasible as a distributed power plant, especially for the small power scale (no more than 2 MW).

AB - LiAlH4 is a promising material for hydrogen storage, having the theoretical gravimetric density of 10.6 wt% H2. In order to decrease the temperature where hydrogen is released, we investigated the catalytic influence of Fe2O3 on LiAlH4 dehydrogenation, as a model case for understanding the effects transition oxide additives have in the catalysis process. Quick mechanochemical synthesis of LiAlH4 + 5 wt% Fe2O3 led to the significant decrease of the hydrogen desorption temperature, and desorption of over 7 wt%H2 in the temperature range 143–154 °C. Density functional theory (DFT)-based calculations with Tran-Blaha modified Becke-Johnson functional (TBmBJ) address the electronic structure of LiAlH4 and Li3AlH6. 57Fe Mössbauer study shows the change in the oxidational state of iron during hydrogen desorption, while the 1H NMR study reveals the presence of paramagnetic species that affect relaxation. The electron transfer from hydrides is discussed as the proposed mechanism of destabilization of LiAlH4 + 5 wt% Fe2O3. © 2021 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC

AB - Increased levels of oxidative stress and oxidative DNA damage are common features in the pathology of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) found in neurons and peripheral cells like peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL). Natural products such as strawberry cultivar Alba are an important source of bioactive nutrients that could help in lowering both the oxidative stress and DNA damage levels. The objective was to estimate the effects of Alba extract on DNA damage in peripheral blood lymphocytes of sporadic AD (aged 60–84 years) patients, and healthy elderly (aged 69–83 years) and young (aged 21–30 years) individuals in in vitro conditions. Comet assay was used as a sensitive technique for the evaluation of PBL DNA damage levels. Reduction of basal DNA damage level in PBL was shown in the young group after the incubation with Alba extract ranging from 25 to 200 μg/ml, with 100 μg/ml being the most effective concentration. Selected Alba extract of 100 μg/ml was further used for PBL treatment of AD and healthy elderly age matched group, displaying potential to significantly attenuate DNA damage levels in both groups (p <.05). Alba extract displayed biological activity against oxidative DNA damage, suggesting that its functional ingredients may have beneficial health effects. Practical applications: The data obtained in this preliminary study displayed that strawberry Alba extract is efficient against DNA damage induced by endogenous and exogenous oxidative stress in peripheral blood lymphocytes of Alzheimer`s disease in vitro. An active area of future research of Alba cultivar should be to determine the trials in in vivo systems. Our findings also suggest that Alba cultivar’s functional ingredients potentially may have beneficial health effects in AD. © 2021 Wiley Periodicals LLC.

abstract = "Increased levels of oxidative stress and oxidative DNA damage are common features in the pathology of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) found in neurons and peripheral cells like peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL). AB - Austempered ductile iron (ADI) is an advanced cast iron material that has a broad field of application and, among others, it is used in contact and for conveyance of fluids. However, it is noticed that in contact with some fluids, especially water, ADI material becomes brittle. The most significant decrease is established for the elongation. However, the influence of water and the cause of this phenomenon is still not fully understood. For that reason, in this paper, the influence of different water concentrations in ethyl alcohol on the mechanical properties of ADI materials was studied. The test was performed on two different types of ADI materials in 0.2, 4, 10, and 100 vol.% water concentration environments, and in dry condition. It was found that even the smallest concentration of water (0.2 vol.%) causes formation of the embrittled zone at fracture surface. However, not all mechanical properties were affected equally and not all water concentrations have been critical. The highest deterioration was established in the elongation, followed by the ultimate tensile strength, while the proof strength was affected least.

AB - Na0.25K0.25Bi0.5TiO3 (NKBT) perovskite particles are synthesized by solid-state method and used as a filler for polyvinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-HFP) co-polymer. X-ray diffraction analysis of NKBT powders shows that the particles have a rhombohedral perovskite crystal structure (R3c symmetry). Raman spectroscopy reveals that the co-polymer crystallizes predominantly into the mixture of polar β- and γ-crystals, while there is also a contribution of the non-polar α-crystal phase. The introduction of the NKBT into the PVDF-HFP results with an increase in effective dielectric permittivity and this effect depends on the inorganic content in the composite. The most interesting result of the present study is that the introduction of NKBT particles induces the appearance of an additional transition peak in the dielectric spectra of the co-polymer matrix. At the fixed frequency of ~2 kHz, the observed process appears at ~10 °C (about 45° above the glass transition temperature) and its magnitude strongly depends on the amount of the NKBT in the composite. Dielectric spectroscopy measurements of the composites are carried out in the wide range of frequencies (from 0.1 Hz to 1 MHz) and temperatures (from −100 to 100 °C). They reveal that the novel process can be clearly distinguished in the frequency range between 160 Hz and ~50 kHz. © 2021 The Authors

AB - In this study, halloysite nanotubes (HNT) were modified by: 3-glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GLYMO), 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APTES), and 2,2-Bis[4-(glycidyloxy) phenyl] propane (DGEBA), and incorporated in the epoxy resin matrix to enhance its mechanical properties. The HNT/epoxy nanocomposite materials were prepared by mixing different ratios of untreated/treated HNT with neat epoxy resin. Characterization of untreated/treated HNT was performed by Fourier-transformation infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The quantity of grafted molecules and thermal stability of newly synthesized materials were determined by thermogravimetric (TG) and derivative thermogravimetric (DTG) analysis. Tensile properties of newly synthesized materials were compared, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis of the fracture surfaces were performed. Incorporation of APTES modified HNT (HNTAPT) and two-step modification APTES followed by DGEBA (HNTAPTDG) has increased the tensile strength of the nanocomposite materials up to 72% and 61%, and strain at break up to 1082% and 1216%, respectively, compared to neat epoxy. It was concluded that the modification of HNT contributed to the enhancement of the dispersion and the cross-linking in the epoxy resin matrix. © 2021 Society of Plastics Engineers

AB - Recent experiments indicate that the reactivity of metal surfaces changes profoundly when they are covered with two-dimensional (2D) materials. Nickel, the widespread catalyst choice for graphene (G) growth, exhibits complex surface restructuring even after the G sheet is fully grown. In particular, due to excess carbon segregation from bulk nickel to surface upon cooling, a nickel carbide (Ni2C) phase is detected under rotated graphene (RG) but not under epitaxial graphene (EG). Motivated by this experimental evidence, we construct different G/Ni(111) interface models accounting for the two types of G domains. Then, by applying density functional theory, we illuminate the microscopic mechanisms governing the structural changes of nickel surface induced by carbon segregation. A high concentration of subsurface carbon reduces the structural stability of Ni(111) surface and gives rise to the formation of thermodynamically advantageous Ni2C monolayer. We show the restructuring of the nickel surface under RG cover and reveal the essential role of G rotation in enabling high density of favorable C binding sites in the Ni(111) subsurface. As opposed to RG, the EG cover locks the majority of favorable C binding sites preventing the build-up of subsurface carbon density to a phase transition threshold. Therefore we confirm that the conversion of C-rich Ni surface to Ni2C takes place exclusively under RG cover, in line with the strong experimental evidence. © 2021 American Physical Society.

AB - The discovery of the Estrogen Receptor Beta (ERβ) in 1996 opened new perspectives in the diagnostics and therapy of different types of cancer. Here, we present a review of the present research knowledge about its role in endocrine-related cancers: breast, prostate, and thyroid, and colorectal cancers. We also discuss the reasons for the controversy of its role in carcinogenesis and why it is still not in use as a biomarker in clinical practice. Given that the diagnostics and therapy would benefit from the introduction of new biomarkers, we suggest ways to overcome the contradictions in elucidating the role of ERβ.

AB - Aflatoxins are natural mycotoxins that mainly occur in areas with humid climates. One of the methods for the successful elimination of aflatoxins is gamma radiation treatment. In this paper, gamma radiation's influence on the content of aflatoxins in hemp flour and microbiological properties (total number of microorganisms, molds, and potentially pathogenic bacteria) and nutritional values were investigated. The artificial radioactive isotope of cobalt Co-60, with a dose rate of 10 kGy/hr, was used as the radiation source. Using high-performance liquid chromatography, we determined that a dose of 4 kGy was sufficient to eliminate aflatoxins below the acceptable value. An irradiation dose of 8 kGy was sufficient to eliminate the total number of microorganisms and molds. Also, a treatment of 3 kGy is enough to remove all bacteria. Finally, it was shown that gamma irradiation does not affect the nutritional value of the product. Novelty Impact Statement: Hemp flour is rich in healthy fats, magnesium, fiber, and protein. However, it may be contaminated with aflatoxins, microorganisms, molds, and potentially pathogenic bacteria. Gamma irradiation is an effective method of food preservation that guarantees food decontamination and protection of nutrients. In this paper, an adequate dose of gamma radiation to preserve hemp flour has been established. © 2021 Wiley Periodicals LLC.

AB - This study's focus was to develop a potential pathway for recycling of the paper mill sludge compost (PMSC) in brick making. Composting reduces the paper mill sludge (PMS) moisture content considerably and shredding becomes easier. The addition of PMSC leads to an increase of porosities in bricks and makes them lighter, besides delivering energy to the firing process from burning organics. Lighter construction materials help minimize construction outlay by reducing labour and transportation costs and lesser expense on foundation construction. The variability in the experimental data and the brick properties were investigated for two types of soils, typical in the brick industry of India (alluvial and laterite soil), blended with PMSC in five mix ratios (0%, 5%, 10%, 15% and 20%). The samples of oven-dried bricks were fired at two different temperatures (850 and 900 °C) in an electrically operated muffle furnace representing typical conditions of a brick kiln. Various properties of bricks were analyzed which included linear shrinkage, bulk density, water absorption and compressive strength. Conclusions were drawn based on these properties. It was found that the addition of PMSC to the alluvial and laterite soil by up to 10% weight yield mechanical properties of fired bricks compliant with the relevant Indian and ASTM codes. Toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) tests showed that PMSC incorporated fired bricks are safe to use in regular applications as non-load-bearing and infill walls. This study is timely in light of the European Green Deal putting focus on circular economy. Besides, it fulfills the objective of UN sustainable development goals (SDG). © 2021 Elsevier Ltd

AB - Background: In order to make some progress in discovering the more effective way to eliminate ROS which cause the oxidative stress in organism in humans and bearing in mind the fact that ethyl-2-hydroxy-4-aryl(alkyl)-4-oxo-2-butenoates (β-diketonates) belong to a class of biologically active compounds, series of β-diketonates were synthesized, characterized, and tested to evaluate there antioxidant activity. Further, to investigate how coordination to copper(II) ion affects the activity of β-diketonates, appropriate complexes were synthesized and characterized. Methods: All complexes were characterized by UV-Vis, IR, and EPR spectroscopy, MS spectrometry, and elemental analysis. Fluorescence spectroscopic method was used for investigations of the interactions between biomacromolecules (DNA or BSA) and compound 2E. Viscosity measurements and molecular docking study were performed to confirm the mode of interactions between DNA and BSA and compound 2E. Results: Scavenging activity on DPPH radical revealed that compounds 2A, 2B, and 2E possess largest free radical scavenging, comparable to standard while results of superoxide anion scavenging activities of tested samples showed that maximum scavenging activity (IC50=168.92 µg/mL) was found for 2E, very similar to standard ascorbic acid, followed by 2B and 2G. Results of the interactions between biomacromolecules and 2E indicated that 2E has the affinity to displace EB from the EB-DNA complex through intercalation [Ksv = (3.7 ± 0.1) × 103 M-1], while Ka value obtained via titration of BSA with 2E [Ka = (4.2 ± 0.2) × 105 M-1], support the fact that the significant amount of the drug could be transported and distributed through the cells. Conclusions: All β-diketonates exhibited better scavenging activities than their corresponding copper complexes. Among all the tested compounds, 2E gave the highest reducing power, even higher than standard ascorbic acid, while reducing power for compounds 2A and 2B was also good but lower than standard. DNA and BSA binding study for 2E showed that this compound has the potential to be used as medicament. © 2021 Bentham Science Publishers.

AB - The investigated metal-metal composites were produced by the compocasting process using the standard zinc-aluminium alloy ZA-27 as a matrix and titanium microparticles (particle size approx. 10 μm) as a secondary phase. The amount of Ti microparticles was 1 and 2 wt%. Small amount (0.5 wt%) of alumina nanoparticles (particle size 20–30 nm) is also used, as reinforcement. The aim of the presented research was to evaluate the possibility of producing such composites, as well as to see the effect of the addition of Ti microparticles and/or alumina nanoparticles on their microstructure, mechanical and tribological properties. Microstructure and worn surfaces analysis were performed by scanning electron microscope, and mechanical properties were analysed through the Vickers microhardness values. Tribological properties were determined on tribometer with line contact, under mixed lubrication conditions. Microstructural analysis showed that the distribution of Ti microparticles has been improved due to the addition of Al2O3 nanoparticles. This better distribution did not show any significant influence on the microhardness values or coefficient of friction values of the composites, but it induced higher wear resistance of metal-metal composites reinforced with Al2O3 nanoparticles. Better distribution and higher amount of Ti particles increased the surface area of the matrix that was protected with Ti particles during sliding and reduced wear. © 2021, American Foundry Society.

AB - Breast cancer (BC) is a leading cause of death among women with malignant diseases. The selection of adequate therapies for highly invasive and metastatic BCs still represents a major challenge. Novel combinatorial therapeutic approaches are urgently required to enhance the efficiency of BC treatment. Recently, microRNAs (miRNAs) emerged as key regulators of the complex mechanisms that govern BC therapeutic resistance and susceptibility. In the present review we aim to critically examine how miRNAs influence BC response to therapies, or how to use miRNAs as a basis for new therapeutic approaches. We summarized recent findings in this rapidly evolving field, emphasizing the challenges still ahead for the successful implementation of miRNAs into BC treatment while providing insights for future BC management. The goal of this review was to propose miRNAs, that might simultaneously improve the efficacy of all four therapies that are the backbone of current BC management (radio-, chemo-, targeted, and hormone therapy). Among the fifty-nine described miRNAs, miR-21 and miR-16 emerged as the most promising, closely followed by miR-205, miR-451, miR-182, and miRNAs from the let-7 family. miR-21 inhibition might be the best choice for future improvement of invasive BC treatment. New therapeutic strategies of miRNA-based agents alongside current standard treatment modalities could greatly benefit BC patients. This review represents a guideline on how to navigate this elaborate puzzle. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC part of Springer Nature.

AB - Interventional procedures in radiology and cardiology are associated with high dose to the patient. Accurate dosimetry is essential and calibration of the equipment is a means to provide the necessary accuracy of dose assessment. The objective of this work is to investigate the performance of dosimeters used in interventional procedures in different standard and non-standard X-ray radiation qualities, and to investigate potential uncertainties related to dose measurements, thus improving accuracy of patient dosimetry in interventional procedures. Four new reference radiation qualities dedicated to interventional cardiology applications have been established, allowing calibration of dosimeters used in clinical conditions with appropriate traceability to primary standards. Testing of solid-state semiconductor detectors and thermoluminescent dosimeter properties, e.g. influence of photon energy, angle of incidence and dose rate, was performed in the standard and non-standard radiation qualities. Both dosimeter types showed good performance in the non-standard beams during all performance tests. Solid-state dosimeters displayed weak dependence on energy, angle of incidence and dose rate, in the range defined by the manufacturer and requirements of the international standard. Thermoluminescent dosimeters displayed excellent linearity and angular dependence. The influence of energy dependence on measurement uncertainty can be reduced if appropriate radiation quality is selected for calibration. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd

© 2021 Elsevier Ltd",

AB - Changes in air pollution in the region of the city of Novi Sad due to the COVID-19 induced state of emergency were evaluated while using data from permanently operating air quality monitoring stations belonging to the national, regional, and local networks, as well as ad hoc deployed low-cost particulate matter (PM) sensors. The low-cost sensors were collocated with reference gravimetric pumps. The starting idea for this research was to determine if and to what extent a massive change of anthropogenic activities introduced by lockdown could be observed in main air pollutants levels. An analysis of the data showed that fine and coarse particulate matter, as well as SO2 levels, did not change noticeably, compared to the pre-lockdown period. Isolated larger peaks in PM pollution were traced back to the Aralkum Desert episode. The reduced movement of vehicles and reduced industrial and construction activities during the lockdown in Novi Sad led to a reduction and a more uniform profile of the PM2.5 levels during the period between morning and afternoon air pollution peak, approximately during typical working hours. Daily profiles of NO2, NO, and NOX during the state of emergency proved lower levels during most hours of the day, due to restrictions on vehicular movement. CO during the state of the emergency mainly exhibited a lower level during night. Pollutants having transportation-dominated source profiles exhibited a decrease in level, while pollutants with domestic heating source profiles mostly exhibited a constant level. Considering local sources in Novi Sad, slight to moderate air quality improvement was observed after the lockdown as compared with days before. Furthermore, PM low-cost sensors’ usefulness in air quality assessment was confirmed, as they increase spatial resolution, but it is necessary to calibrate them at the deployment location.

AB - We analyze the effects of the strain-induced pseudomagnetic field on the subthreshold mechanism of hybridization taking place between the Dirac plasmon in graphene and the surface optical phonon modes in a nearby substrate. It is shown that the pseudomagnetic field exerts quite strong influence on the oscillatory pattern in the total potential in the plane of graphene, as well as on the stopping and the image forces on a charge, which moves parallel to the graphene at a speed below the Fermi velocity, specially for small graphene–substrate gap sizes. One may conclude that the subthreshold mechanism of the plasmon–phonon hybridization can be controlled by varying the pseudomagnetic field strength and the doping density in graphene. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC part of Springer Nature.
