Feature selection for coal heating level estimation in thermal power plants

AB  - Several recently signed environmental agreements and protocols emphasize the global need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, with a focus on limiting coal consumption due to high NOX and CO2 emissions. However, many countries, including those in the Western Balkans, rely heavily on coal for electricity generation. The outdated thermal power plant infrastructure in these regions poses a major challenge when it comes to meeting modern environmental standards while maintaining efficiency. This study is part of the more comprehensive research which aims to develop an expert system that utilizes existing measurements to estimate key parameters crucial for both energy production and pollution reduction. The focus is on Serbian thermal power plants, particularly plant "Nikola Tesla" unit B1. One of the critical parameters for optimizing thermal power plant control loops is the heating value of coal, which is challenging to measure in real time due to the coal's varying chemical compositions and caloric values. This paper examines 74 different parameters measured in 59 instances to estimate the hating value of coal at unit B1. Through detailed analysis and feature selection methods, including linear regression, this research aims to identify the most informative parameters for estimating the heating value of coal, which will improve the control system that enables more efficient and environmentally friendly power generation in coal fired thermal power plants.

Boosting electrochemical energy storage properties of SrGd2O4 through Yb3+ and Tm3+ rare earth ion doping

AB  - Electrochemical supercapacitors represent advanced energy storage devices that excel in the swift storage and delivery of electrical energy, effectively bridging the gap between conventional capacitors and batteries. The present work, aimed to investigate charge storage properties of SrGd2O4 and rare earth ions Yb3+and Tm3+ doped in SrGd2O4. Both materials were prepared via simple sol-gel synthesis and characterized by XRD, XPS, and FE-SEM with EDS. Characterization confirmed the presence of Tm3+and Yb3+ in the SrGd2O4 matrix with a uniform distribution of elements. The charge storage behavior of pure SrGd2O4 and SrGd2O4:Yb4Tm1 in various electrolytes was thoroughly explored. Large electrochemical potential windows were shown by both electrode materials in aqueous 6 M KOH (1.7 V), which is essential for supercapacitors to achieve high specific energy. Furthermore, SrGd2O4:Yb4Tm1 demonstrated a substantially more pronounced charge storage effect in 6 M KOH electrolyte, with almost double times higher specific capacitance values compared with an un-doped SrGd2O4 sample. The main impact on the electrochemical window had matrix SrGd2O4, while the main impact on specific capacitance had rear earth dopants (Yb3+and Tm3+). Improved charge storage characteristics of SrGd2O4: Yb4Tm1 were also evident through a notable reduction in overall resistance observed in electrochemical impedance spectroscopy experiments. Concerning the two-electrode GCD measurements, the SrGd2O4:Yb4Tm1 electrode in 6 M KOH showed a specific capacitance of 143 F g 1, with the specific energy of 12.5 Wh kg 1 at 0.6 A g 1. These findings demonstrate the potential of rare earth ion doping in enhancing the energy storage properties of SrGd2O4, offering promising avenues for the development of high-performance supercapacitors.

Spark plasma sintering of magnesium titanate ceramics

AB  - Magnesium titanate ceramics were prepared by reactive spark plasma sintering (SPS) at 1200 °C for 5 min. Prior to sintering, MgO and TiO2 powders were mixed by high energy ball milling (HEBM) for 15, 30, or 60 min. The effect of milling time on phase composition was analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) for milled powders and sintered specimens. The morphology of the sintered ceramics was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), while elemental distribution was determined by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The presence of the MgTi2O5 phase was detected in XRD and was confirmed by EDS analysis. Microcracking was observed for specimens prepared with longer milling times and attributed to the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) mismatch dominantly due to the anisotropic crystal structure of MgTiO3 phase. The sample milled for 15 min showed the highest Vickers hardness due to less or no microcracking and nearly full density. The dielectric measurements in the range of 10 Hz–250 MHz demonstrated extremely high dielectric permittivity, as high as 104 at 1 kHz. An increase in loss tangents was observed due to oxygen vacancy formation, which was promoted by the vacuum environment during SPS. Oxygen vacancy-related dielectric relaxation was also detected and explained.

AB  - Clinical interpretation of an electrocardiogram (ECG) can be detrimentally affected by noise. Removal of the electromyographic (EMG) noise is particularly challenging due to its spectral overlap with the QRS complex. The existing EMG-denoising algorithms often distort signal morphology, thus obscuring diagnostically relevant information. Here, a new iterative regeneration method (IRM) for efficient EMG-noise suppression is proposed. The main hypothesis is that the temporary removal of the dominant ECG components enables extraction of the noise with the minimum alteration to the signal. The method is validated on SimEMG database of simultaneously recorded reference and noisy signals, MIT-BIH arrhythmia database and synthesized ECG signals, both with the noise from MIT Noise Stress Test Database. IRM denoising and morphology-preserving performance is superior to the wavelet- and FIR-based benchmark methods. : IRM is reliable, computationally non-intensive, fast and applicable to any number of ECG channels recorded by mobile or standard ECG devices.

Aqueous sage leave extract attenuates inflammation and oxidant-induced genotoxicity in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells

AB  - Traditional medicine has used sage (Salvia officinalis L.) preparations for centuries to prevent and treat various inflammatory and oxidative stress-induced conditions. The aim of this in vitro study was to determine the bioactive properties of a sage leave extract obtained with environmentally friendly aqueous extraction and lyophilisation in primary human peripheral blood cells. To that end we measured the total phenolic and flavonoid content (TPC and TFC, respectively) with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Non-cytotoxic concentrations determined with the trypan blue assay were used to assess the antioxidant (DPPH, ABTS, and PAB assay), antigenotoxic (CBMN assay), immunomodulatory (IL-1β and TNF-α), and neuroprotective effects (AChE inhibition). The extract contained high TPC (162 mg GAE/g of dry extract) and TFC (39.47 mg QE/g of dry extract) concentrations, while β-thujone content was unexpectedly low (below 0.9 %). Strong radical-scavenging activity combined with glutathione reductase activation led to a decrease in basal and H2 O 2 - induced oxidative stress and DNA damage. A decrease in TNF-α and increase in IL-1β levels suggest complex immunomodulatory response that could contribute to antioxidant and, together with mild AChE inhibition, neuroprotective effects. Overall, this study has demonstrated that aqueous sage leave extract reduces the levels of thujone, 1,8-cineole, pinene, and terpene ketones that could be toxic in high concentrations, while maintaining high concentrations of biologically active protective compounds which have a potential to prevent and/ or treat inflammatory and oxidative stress-related conditions.
AB  - Salvia officinalis L. stoljećima se koristi u tradicionalnoj medicini za prevenciju i liječenje raznih upalnih i oksidacijskim stresom izazvanih poremećaja. U ovoj studiji željeli smo ekstrahirati kaduljino lišće korištenjem ekološki prihvatljivog, “zelenog” pristupa vodenom ekstrakcijom i liofilizacijom te odrediti njegova bioaktivna svojstva u primarnim ljudskim perifernim krvnim stanicama. Ukupni sadržaj fenola i flavonoida i GC-MS korišteni su za karakterizaciju ekstrakta. Necitotoksične koncentracije, određene tripan plavim testom, analizirane su za procjenu antioksidacijskih (DPPH, ABTS i PAB test), antigenotoksičnih (CBMN test), imunomodulacijskih (IL-1β i TNF-α) i neuroprotektivnih učinaka (AChE inhibicija). Ekstrakt je sadržavao visoku koncentraciju ukupnih fenola (162 mg GAE/g liofilizata) i flavonoida (39,47 mg QE/g liofilizata), dok je sadržaj β-tujona bio neočekivano nizak (niži od 0,9 %). Snažna aktivnost hvatanja radikala u kombinaciji s aktivacijom glutation reduktaze dovela je do smanjenja bazalnog i H2 O 2 induciranog oksidacijskog stresa i oštećenja DNA. abstract = "Traditional medicine has used sage (Salvia officinalis L.) preparations for centuries to prevent and treat various inflammatory and oxidative stress-induced conditions. The aim of this in vitro study was to determine the bioactive properties of a sage leave extract obtained with environmentally friendly aqueous extraction and lyophilisation in primary human peripheral blood cells. To that end we measured the total phenolic and flavonoid content (TPC and TFC, respectively) with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Non-cytotoxic concentrations determined with the trypan blue assay were used to assess the antioxidant (DPPH, ABTS, and PAB assay), antigenotoxic (CBMN assay), immunomodulatory (IL-1β and TNF-α), and neuroprotective effects (AChE inhibition). The extract contained high TPC (162 mg GAE/g of dry extract) and TFC (39.47 mg QE/g of dry extract) concentrations, while β-thujone content was unexpectedly low (below 0.9 %). Strong radical-scavenging activity combined with glutathione reductase activation led to a decrease in basal and H2 O 2 - induced oxidative stress and DNA damage. A decrease in TNF-α and increase in IL-1β levels suggest complex immunomodulatory response that could contribute to antioxidant and, together with mild AChE inhibition, neuroprotective effects. Overall, this study has demonstrated that aqueous sage leave extract reduces the levels of thujone, 1,8-cineole, pinene, and terpene ketones that could be toxic in high concentrations, while maintaining high concentrations of biologically active protective compounds which have a potential to prevent and/ or treat inflammatory and oxidative stress-related conditions., Salvia officinalis L. stoljećima se koristi u tradicionalnoj medicini za prevenciju i liječenje raznih upalnih i oksidacijskim stresom izazvanih poremećaja. U ovoj studiji željeli smo ekstrahirati kaduljino lišće korištenjem ekološki prihvatljivog, “zelenog” pristupa vodenom ekstrakcijom i liofilizacijom te odrediti njegova bioaktivna svojstva u primarnim ljudskim perifernim krvnim stanicama. Ukupni sadržaj fenola i flavonoida i GC-MS korišteni su za karakterizaciju ekstrakta. Necitotoksične koncentracije, određene tripan plavim testom, analizirane su za procjenu antioksidacijskih (DPPH, ABTS i PAB test), antigenotoksičnih (CBMN test), imunomodulacijskih (IL-1β i TNF-α) i neuroprotektivnih učinaka (AChE inhibicija). Ekstrakt je sadržavao visoku koncentraciju ukupnih fenola (162 mg GAE/g liofilizata) i flavonoida (39,47 mg QE/g liofilizata), dok je sadržaj β-tujona bio neočekivano nizak (niži od 0,9 %). AB  - Gentiopicroside (Gp) and swertiamarin (Sm), secoiridoid glycosides commonly found in plants of the Gentianaceae family, differ in one functional group. They exhibit promising cytotoxic effects in cancer cell lines and overall protective outcomes, marking them as promising molecules for developing novel pharmaceuticals. To investigate potential variations in cellular sensitivity to compounds of similar molecular structures, we analyzed the mode of Gp and Sm induced cell death in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) after 48 h of treatment. The lowest tested concentration that significantly reduces cell viability, 50 μ M, was applied. Oxidative stress parameters were estimated by measuring the levels of prooxidative/antioxidative balance, lipid peroxidation products, and 8-oxo-7,8-dihydro-2-deoxyguanosine, while gene expression of DNA repair enzymes was evaluated by employing quantitative real-time PCR. Cellular morphology was analyzed by fluorescent microscopy, and immunoblot analysis of apoptosis and necroptosis-related proteins was used to assess the type of cell death induced by the treatments. The discriminatory impact of Gp/Sm treatments on apoptosis and necroptosis- induced cell death was evaluated by monitoring the cell survival in co-treatment with specific cell death inhibitors. Obtained results show greater cytotoxicity of Gp than Sm suggesting that variations in the molecular structures of the tested compounds can substantially affect their biological effects. Gp/Sm co-treatment with apoptosis and necroptosis inhibitors revealed a distinct, albeit non-specific mechanism of PBMCs cell death. Although the therapeutic may not directly cause a specific type of cell death, its extent can be pivotal in assessing the safety of therapeutic application and developing phytopharmaceuticals with improved features. Since phytopharmaceuticals affect all exposed cells, identification of cytotoxic mechanisms on PBMCs after Gp and Sm treatment is important for addressing the formulation and dosage of potential phytopharmaceuticals.

AB  - Due to extensive food production, organophosphate pesticides (OPs) are widely utilized for crop protection, leading to their presence in the environment. The focus of this study was the design of an efficient aqueous biphasic system (ABS) strategy for OP removal, namely, malathion (MAL), azinphos-methyl (AZM), and chlorpyrifos (CHP) from water. Different ionic liquids (ILs) with symmetrical cations were selected as ABS phase- formers (tetrabutylphosphonium salicylate, tetrabutylammonium salicylate, 1,3-dibutylimidazolium dicyanamide, 1,3-dibutylimidazolium salicylate and 1,3-dibutylimidazolium bromide) with citrate salt as a salting-out agent. Initially, phase diagrams were determined, followed by partition studies revealing that the partition of MAL and CHP aligns with the IL- ABS formation trend, while the AZM partition is governed by specific interactions with ILs. For optimization studies, tetrabutylphosphonium-salicylate i.e. [TBP][Sal]-based ABS was chosen, due to obtained high extraction efficiencies of over 99.3 %. After establishing the effects of pH, temperature, tie-line length, and phase ratio on extraction performance, extraction of OPs from a real wastewater sample further confirmed the effectiveness of the designed method achieving complete removal of each pesticide. Furthermore, recovery of IL was achieved using an antisolvent method to precipitate CHP followed by IL-reuse in three consecutive cycles without efficiency decreased. Finally, it was demonstrated that [TBP][Sal] exhibits low cytotoxic potential, indicating that the presence of low amounts of this IL in aqueous media could be acceptable from ecotoxicological standpoint. This study showcased the exceptional potential of the proposed technology for the efficient and sustainable treatment of wastewater contaminated with OPs, affirming its capability to treat significant wastewater volumes.

AB  - The widespread usage of the herbicide glyphosate calls for urgent action, aiming at the development of new, simple, low-cost, and eco-friendly detection approaches. In the last decade, investigation of graphene quantum dots (GQDs) as potential optical probes for various pollutants rapidly grew, thanks to their easy-manipulative structure, remarkable photoluminescence (PL) in the visible part of the spectrum, good dispersibility, biocompatibility, and non-toxicity, as well. Herein, a fast, simple, and environmentally friendly method for GQDs structural modification is presented. GQDs raw powder was exposed to γ- rays at three different doses (100, 200, and 300 kGy) in air, without any solvent or reagents. Irradiation of dots under such affordable conditions led to the additional incorporation of oxygen-containing moieties in the GQD structure. For the first time, oxygen-rich GQDs irradiated at a 300 kGy dose were successfully applied as direct turn-off PL probe for glyphosate detection. The high coefficient of determination (R-squared (R2) = 0.99) and very low limit of detection (3.02 μmol L-1) reveal good linearity between the potential sensor and analyte, as well as sensitivity. Glyphosate was successfully detected in celery samples, with a recovery value of 107 ± 0.85%. To evaluate the biological safety of the proposed sensing probe, [3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide] (MTT) and the hemolysis assays were performed. Obtained results show that irradiated and non-irradiated GQDs did not cause the death of MRC-5 cells, and hemolysis of erythrocytes. The obtained results demonstrate that GQDs irradiated in an air medium can be potentially applied for glyphosate detection.

In this chapter, we summarized the knowledge about GQDs and explored their applications in the detection of inorganic cations and anions, organic molecules, such as pesticides, cancer biomarkers, metabolites like glucose, L-glutamine, and in the detection of enzymes, microorganisms, etc. The methods for detection as well as mechanisms involved in the monitoring of analytes are explained in depth.

AB  - Double ferrite nanocomposites with NiF2O4 as the core and ZnFe2O4 as the shell, were synthesised through combination of co-precipitation and hydrothermal methods. This two-step process resulted in formation of a cubic structured core of around 100 nm and a shell of zinc ferrite nanoparticles which are below 10 nm in size. The core/shell structures were characterised using various techniques such as XRD, Raman, TEM/EDS and VSM. In addition, Ni leaching out of these structures was tested in the ultra-pure water and saline solution. These analyses demonstrated that the shell of zinc ferrites effectively prevents Ni leaching from the core keeping the concentration of nickel well below the level usually found in drinking water. These core/shell nanocomposites exhibit a ferrimagnetic behaviour.

AB  - Gaps in data management in healthcare applications are related to the unbalanced distribution of medical resources, especially in rural areas around the world. Cognitive intelligence in data management implies the integration of cognitive computing, mass analytics and artificial intelligence, especially machine learning, which can be used to find the patient’s health status, physiologically and psychologically transforming the current health system. In order to remotely detect the emotional state of patients during disease diagnosis, it is proposed to integrate the tactile Internet with 6G as cognitive intelligence in the evaluation of data and the Internet for health systems. All this aims to form the 6G Cognitive healthcare Internet of Everything (6GCIoHE) system in order to achieve global availability, extremely low latency and high reliability. 6G is a promising communication technology that will soon dominate the healthcare sector. This technology will lead to significant changes in numerous areas thanks to the increasingly widespread form of artificial intelligence whose development will be stimulated by 6G communication technologies, fundamentally changing our understandings and way of life. In addition, various new methodologies that include quality of life (QoL), intelligent wearable devices (IWD), intelligent Internet of Medical Things (IIoMT), 3D holography, hospital to home (H2H) services and new business models. In addition, 6G communication technologies will lead to remarkable progress in tele surgery as well as epidemiology.

AB  - Variations in the hepatitis C virus (HCV) core gene are related to the progression of liver fibrosis and therapy response. However, the influence of individual amino acid (aa) substitutions at different positions of HCV Core protein on the response to combined pegylated interferon/ribavirin (PEG-IFN/RBV) therapy and disease progression is not yet fully understood. The HCV Core protein can inactivate various genes in the host genome by affecting the methylation of their promoters, leading to liver damage and carcinogenesis. Two genes whose methylation status is affected by the HCV Core protein are the tumor suppressor genes RASSF1A and p16. We have previously shown that the methylation status of these two genes, together with the single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs12979860 near the interleukin-28 beta subunit (IL-28B) gene, influences the response to combined therapy. Herein, we investigated a possible association between detected aa substitutions in HCV Core protein and response to combined therapy, liver disease progression, IL28B genotype, and the methylation status of the RASSF1A and p16 genes. In 29 examined patients we found no association between individual aa substitutions and therapy response. However, we observed that patients with HCV Core aa substitutions at position 75 and CT/TT IL28B genotypes were non-responders (NR) (p=0.023), which was associated with the presence of unmethylated RASSF1A gene. In contrast, even 75% of patients with aa substitutions at position 91 and CC IL28B genotype achieved a sustained virologic response (SVR) (p=0.030), and 70% of them had methylated RASSF1A gene. There was no significant association between the methylation status of the p16 gene and aa variations in the HCV core region. Our results suggest that combined analysis of aa substitutions in HCV Core protein, IL28B genotype, and methylation status of the RASSF1A gene may help predict response to PEG-IFN/RBV therapy in patients with chronic hepatitis C genotype 1b.xx

Challenges in SARS-COV-2 diagnostics by real time RT-PCR

AB  - COVID-19 pandemic caused by coronavirus 2 respiratory virus (SARS-CoV-2) required fast and effective diagnostics for the purpose of preventing the spread of the disease and outbreak monitoring and control. Therefore, prompt, accurate and reliable testing was of particular importance. Indubitably, the most representative, the most sensitive and the fastest method for detection of SARS CoV-2 is Real Time RT-PCR (RT-qPCR). During the pandemic there were numerous different assays, reagents, protocols and reporting procedures under the question mark because of lack of certified standards, standardization of RNA extraction and reporting procedures. In practice, the reliability of RT-qPCR results depend on a number of parameters that include sample collection and processing, method of RNA extraction, choice of assay, choice of instrument, analysis method and operator intervention. Here we present the various challenges which we encountered during our work and emphasize comparative analysis by different assays, as well as automated versus manual RNA extraction. Sampling, adequate manipulation load, the quality of the assay and interpretation of the result are extremely important. Our results revealed that manual viral RNA extraction should be a method of choice for high sensitivity. In addition, amplification assays targeting three SARS-CoV-2 genes are much more efficient from those targeting one. Unfortunately, RT-qPCR (originally quantitative method) was exclusively used as qualitative diagnostic test for SARS-CoV-2. We think that the ideal testing regimen would involve not just qualitative detection of SARS-CoV-2 but reliable and meaningful quantitative reporting of viral load. For such a thing, a consensus at the level of the world medical community is necessary regarding the most important thing: defining the cut-off value for a clinically significant viral load. It has never been done and therefore many people, all over the world, were sentenced to house arrest for no reason at all.

AB  - The prognosis of rectal cancer (RC) can be influenced by various factors, including the location of the tumor. Studies have shown that the position of the tumor within the rectum can impact the recurrence and overall survival rates. Tumor localization in RC is also associated with gene expression alterations. ZEB1 is a transcriptional factor that promotes tumor invasiveness via regulation of the epithelialmesenchymal transition process and plays a significant role in RC by influencing tumor aggressiveness. This study aimed to evaluate the location-specific expression of the ZEB1 gene and its prognostic role in RC patients. This preliminary study included 45 untreated RC patients who underwent curative resection. In 10 patients, the tumor was located in the low rectum (0-5 cm), while 35 tumors were positioned within the mid and upper rectum (5-15 cm). We isolated mRNA from postoperative tumor FFPE samples. TaqMan® gene expression assay was used for quantitative real-time PCR analysis of ZEB1 gene expression. The preliminary analysis revealed that relative ZEB1 gene expression was significantly higher in upper RC locations than among low-positioned tumors (0.00198 vs. 0.000947, p=0.024). We did not find a significant difference in overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) among RC patients based on the tumor location and ZEB1 expression (p > 0.05 in both cases). However, among 35 patients with upper-positioned tumors, we noted that patients with elevated ZEB1 expression had shorter DFS than patients with low ZEB1 expression (48.062±6.557 vs. 61.682±6.095 months), although the observed difference was not statistically significant (p=0.270). Our results indicate the importance of evaluating spatial ZEB1 expression in RC and suggest its potential prognostic role, especially in determining the survival time without disease recurrence in RC patients. However, further research on a larger number of samples is needed to confirm these findings.

AB  - Breast cancer (BC) is the most common cancer among women worldwide. The diagnosis and treatment decisions depend on the three biomarkers: oestrogen receptor alfa, progesterone receptor and human epidermal growth factor 2. The foremost treatment line is Nolvadex (tamoxifen). Yet approximately 30% of patients do not respond to tamoxifen treatment. The discovery of oestrogen receptor beta (ERβ) opened the door for another BC biomarker’s introduction. The studies show that the ERβ usually behaves like a tumour suppressor and that its expression is a favourable parameter of the patient survival and treatment response. Our study aimed to assess the prognostic and predictive role of ERβ in BC. It encompassed 118 BC samples from patients operated at the Institute of Oncology and Radiology of Serbia from 2002 to 2004. Overall (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) data were collected between 2002 and 2022. We used the Western blot method for ERβ1 protein detection. The ERβ1 mRNA and ERβ delta5 mRNA isoforms were detected by quantitative PCR method with TaqMan Assays. The extracted DNA was subjected to a two-step MSP MethEvaGreen procedure, using primers we designed to detect specific ERβ gene promoter ON methylation. Patient groups were divided into low and high-expression groups based on median values. Our results showed that in the high methylation index group, OS and DFS of patients who received adjuvant Nolvadex treatment were significantly longer than those who did not (p=0.001, p=0.033, respectively). In the low methylation index group, the DFS of patients who received radiotherapy was significantly shorter than those who did not (p=0.037). However, in the low ERβ mRNA expression group, the DFS of patients who received radiotherapy was significantly shorter than those who did not (p=0.028). Our results show that ERβ could be a significant additional parameter in the BC prognosis and treatment decisions. Further analyses are needed.

AB  - The use of vanadium complexes for potential applications in medicine largely depends on the structural properties of the complex itself, as well as on the electronic configuration of the metal and its oxidation state. When the vanadium complex binds to biomolecules or by binding solvent molecules to the complex, there is a change in the structure but also a change in the redox properties of the complex. Using theoretical methods, especially Density Functional theory (DFT), it is possible to determine which factors influence changes in the redox properties of the complex. Furthermore, by calculating the Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) constants of hyperfine coupling, it is possible to obtain not only data on the electronic configuration, but also to predict changes in redox properties upon changes in the structure of the complex. DFT results show that the binding of pyridine or imidazole to the VO(acac)2 complex leads to a lowering of the redox potential. The largest changes in the redox potential were observed in the case when the incoming ligand binds in a cis position relative to the V==O bond.

The significant interest in thiosemicarbazones and their metal complexes arises from a wide range of valuable biological, chemical and physico-chemical features, as documented by numerous review papers in medicinal, structural, analytical chemistry, catalysis and other. The thiosemicarbazide based ligands other than Schiff bases did not draw the same attention. A literature survey, however, shows considerable number of non-Schiff base derivatives with interesting coordination chemistry, giving rise to metal complexes with pronounced structural diversity and useful properties. Considering the polydentate thiosemicarbazide scaffold [N–N–C(=S)–N] it is not surprising that its other derivatives can offer versatile coordination modes and stable complexes with variety of metal ions. This article attempts to bring together the thiosemicarbazide derived ligands other than Schiff bases, and to explore their coordination tendencies as well as the structural aspects of their metal complexes. The first papers in coordination chemistry of thiosemicarbazide were reported exactly 90 years ago. Therefore, it is also our aim to gain better overview of various types of thiosemicarbazide ligands that have emerged since, and to understand different possibilities of thiosemicarbazide modification. In order to present and compare the molecular and supramolecular properties the review primary relies on structurally characterized coordination compounds. It also includes some experimental charge density findings in an effort to explain behaviour of thiosemicarbazide ligands at subatomic level.

A comprehensive parametric study is carried out with the developed one-dimensional mathematical thermodynamic equilibrium model for plasma gasification. The model is based on the principle of the minimum of the Gibbs function and uses only the ultimate and proximate analysis data as input to the model. The output of the model is the equilibrium composition of the thermal plasma gasification products as a function of temperature in the plasma reactor. The parametric analysis has shown that the optimum conditions for the gasification process of sewage sludge are a temperature of 1200 K and an equivalence ratio of 0.2 for the air gasification case, i.e. 1200 K and the steam-to-fuel ratio of 0.1 for the case of steam gasification. When comparing the different gasification media, gasification with steam leads to a higher yield of H2 in the produced syngas. For the selected optimal conditions, the economic analysis of the process shows that the price of gasification per ton of sewage sludge is lower in the case of steam gasification and amounts to 72.30 €/t, compared to 88.12 €/t in the case of air gasification. The analysis was carried out using the example of a plant with a capacity of 360 kg/h. The sensitivity analysis was carried out taking into account the influence of the electricity price, labor costs, the price of CO2 emissions and the ash disposal price. The analysis shows that labor costs have the greatest influence on the price of thermal plasma gasification of sewage sludge.

AB  - The widespread production of polymeric materials has precipitated severe environmental challenges, prompting a pressing need for effective solutions. Among these materials, polyurethanes (PUs) stand out significantly due to their versatility in synthetic approaches, manufacturing, properties, and applications. This versatility has led to a high demand for PUs, resulting in significant waste accumulation at the end of their lifecycle. Along with that, the PU's inherent chemical stability prevents the occurrence of natural hydrolytic processes. Consequently, there is a critical need for sustainable recycling methods, particularly those capable of recovering reusable monomers. Recycling is a leading way to manage waste by reducing plastic pollution and its environmental impact, which can be performed through mechanical, chemical, and biological processes. Biological degradation occurs through the action of enzymes and microbes that can potentially convert the polymers into monomers or other valuable chemicals. This approach presents an opportunity to establish a sustainable and circular economy within the PUs industry while considerably reducing the environmental impact. This review highlights enzymatic degradation as a promising solution for PU recycling by discussing the types of enzymes utilized in the process, potential biochemical pathways for PU degradation, recent achievements, and future remarks for this process.

AB  - 3D printing provides a lot of varieties for the manufacturing of personalized biomedical devices. Incorporation of the nanoparticles with potential antibacterial activity to the printed materials is another added value. One example of such nanoparticles are hydrophobic carbon quantum dots (hCQDs), which are zero-dimensional redox-active materials with high chemical stability and low production costs. They produce singlet oxygen only when activated by a specific wavelength of visible blue light which allows for controlled antibacterial action and minimizes the chances of bacterial resistance emergence. We prepared and characterized polymer composites based on thermoplastic elastomers (TPE) doped with hCQDs (TPE/hCQDs). The composites were 3D printed using fused deposition modeling method. In the first set of samples, a filament of pure TPE was immersed in a solution of hCQDs (0.5 mg/mL), then 3D printed, and compared with unmodified TPE filament. The mechanical properties, swelling behavior, hardness, and thermal stability of TPE/hCQDs were compared with the pure TPE printed samples. The production of singlet oxygen was confirmed by the electron paramagnetic resonance method. The antibacterial activity of the samples was tested according to ISO 22196 against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli after one hour of exposure to blue light, which completely inhibited bacterial growth. Besides, the cytotoxicity of samples was evaluated by MTT assay, and no significant effect of the materials on cell viability was observed. 3D printed materials with antibacterial activity represent a perspective for the future, especially in the field of personalized medicine, as well as in products for other industries.

Interplay of altermagnetism and weak ferromagnetism in two-dimensional RuF4

AB  - Gaining growing attention in spintronics is a class of magnets displaying zero net magnetization and spin-split electronic bands called altermagnets. Here, by combining density functional theory and symmetry analysis, we show that RuF4 monolayer is a two-dimensional (2D) d-wave altermagnet. Spin–orbit coupling leads to pronounced spin splitting of the electronic bands at the Γpoint by ∼100meVandturns the RuF4 into a weak ferromagnet due to nontrivial spin-momentum locking that cants the Ru magnetic moments. The net magnetic moment scales linearly with the spin–orbit coupling strength. Using group theory we derive an effective spin Hamiltonian capturing the spin-splitting and spin-momentum locking of the electronic bands. Disentanglement of the altermagnetic and spin–orbit coupling induced spin splitting uncovers to which extent the altermagnetic properties are affected by the spin–orbit coupling. Our results move the spotlight to the nontrivial spin-momentum locking and weak ferromagnetism in the 2D altermagnets relevant for novel venues in this emerging field of material science research.

Symmetric U-Net Model Tuned by FOX Metaheuristic Algorithm for Global Prediction of High Aerosol Concentrations

AB  - In this study, the idea of using a fully symmetric U-Net deep learning model for forecasting a segmented image of high global aerosol concentrations is implemented. As the forecast relies on historical data, the model used a sequence of the last eight segmented images to make the prediction. For this, the classic U-Net model was modified to use ConvLSTM2D layers with MaxPooling3D and UpSampling3D layers. In order to achieve complete symmetry, the output data are given in the form of a series of eight segmented images shifted by one image in the time sequence so that the last image actually represents the forecast of the next image of high aerosol concentrations. The proposed model structure was tuned by the new FOX metaheuristic algorithm. Based on our analysis, we found that this algorithm is suitable for tuning deep learning models considering their stochastic nature. It was also found that this algorithm spends the most time in areas close to the optimal value where there is a weaker linear correlation with the required metric and vice versa. Taking into account the characteristics of the used database, we concluded that the model is capable of generating adequate data and finding patterns in the time domain based on the ddc and dtc criteria. By comparing the achieved results of this model using the AUC-PR metric with the previous results of the ResNet3D-101 model with transfer learning, we concluded that the proposed symmetric U-Net model generates data better and is more capable of finding patterns in the time domain.
