AB - Cholesterol as very important biomolecule is the precursor of many biologically significant compounds which give strength and flexibility to the biological membranes. It is also a crucial component in lipoproteins, and has an important role to transport hydrophobic molecules in hydrophilic media such as blood [1, 2]. The analytical performance of carbon paste electrodes (CPE) bulk modified with ionic liquid 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide ([AMIM][DCA]), and surface modified with platinum on graphitized carbon (Pt-C) or platinum-ruthenium alloy on graphitized carbon (Pt,Ru-C) for analysis of hydrogen peroxide (H 2O2) were compared. The prepared working electrodes were characterized using scanning electron microscopy–energydispersive X-ray spectrometry, together with electrochemical impedance spectroscopic, cyclic voltammetric, and amperometric techniques. After method optimization, an enzyme cholesterol oxidase (ChOx) was immobilized on the surface of Pt,Ru-C/IL-CPE by Nafion®. The improved cholesterol amperometric determination was achieved in phosphate buffer solution pH 7.50 at a working potential of 0.60 V. Under the optimized experimental conditions, a linear relationship between oxidation current and cholesterol concentration was in the concentration range from 0.31 to 2.46 µM, with an estimated detection limit of 0.13 µM and relative standard deviation (RSD) below 4.2%. The optimized amperometric method in combination with the developed ChOx/Pt,Ru-C/IL-CPE biosensor showed good repeatability and high selectivity towards cholesterol biosensing despite the presence of possible interferences. The ChOx/Pt,Ru-C/IL-CPE was tested for the determination of the free cholesterol, by its enzymatic reaction product H 2O2, in a human blood serum sample. The percentage recovery ranged from 99.08 to 102.81%, while RSD was below 2.0% for untreated, as well as for spiked human blood serum sample.

AB - The increasing popularity of luminescent nanothermometry in recent years can be attributed to its application potential in biomedicine. In response to this need, we describe a biocompatible bimodal luminescent thermometer that operates in ratiometric and luminescence lifetime modes based on particles of MgTiO3:Cr3+,Nd3+@SiO2. The introduction of Cr3+ and Nd3+ dopants enabled the luminescence of Ti3+ ions to be observed, and the difference in the thermal quenching rates of Cr3+ (4T2→4A2), Ti3+ (2T2→2E) and Nd3+ (4F3/2 → 4I11/2) ions enabled the ratiometric thermometers. The highest sensitivity reaching SR = 1.00%K−1 was obtained for MgTiO3:0.1 % Cr3+, 0.1 % Nd3+ at 203 K. The shortening of the lifetime of the 4T2 level of Cr3+ ions associated with its thermal depopulation allows to develop a lifetime-based thermometer with a relative sensitivity reaching 0.85–1.18%K−1 in the physiological temperature range. The deposition of a SiO2 shell on a MgTiO3:Cr3+,Nd3+ did not introduce significant changes in the shape of the emission spectrum and slightly elongates the lifetime by reducing the probability of surface-related nonradiative processes. More importantly, the thermometric performance of this luminescence thermometer was preserved. The low cytotoxicity of the obtained materials underlines their potential in bioapplications of the described luminescent thermometers.

AB - Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) are well known as a promising therapeutic agent due to their excellent pro-oxidant, antioxidant, antibacterial and anticancer properties under visible light irradiation. This material is easy to produce by several bottom-up or top-down methods. In this study, we used citric acid as starting precursor to synthesize aqueous carbon quantum dots dispersion by pyrolysis at 210 ◦C. Atomic force microscopy and XPS analyses revealed that CQDs synthesized are quasi-spherical with typical diameter of 9 nm and lots of C–O and C––O functional groups distributed over the basal plane and edges of the dots. Here, we investigated the antiviral properties of CQDs against cytomegalovirus (CMV). The pre-treatment with CQDs upregulates interferonstimulated genes (ISG), resulting in better virus control. Cellular defence against cytomegalovirus of CQDs pre-treated cells is increased in a dose-dependent manner. Our results reveal high biocompatibility and potent in vitro antiviral properties of CQDs.

AB - Eu3+ doped Zirconia coatings were synthesized by the electrochemical plasma electrolytic oxidation method in only 8 min from the pure zirconium substrate. The phase constitution from pure monoclinic to pure tetragonal and exactly in between was achieved by using different concentrations of Na3PO4 and NaAlO2 electrolytes. The complex emission spectra composed of Eu2+, Eu3+, and ZrO2 defect emission greatly depend on the excitation wavelength and phase constitution. Eu3+ photoluminescence properties depend on the phase, which is reflected by the different Stark splitting and different intensities of transitions. Thus, both phase and photoluminescent properties of ZrO2 coatings are fine-tuneable. Judd-Ofelt analysis was performed from the emission and excitation spectra, showing that all 3 intensity parameters depend linearly on the phase constitution, being largest in the pure monoclinic phase. The mixed phase has Judd-Ofelt parameters between those in pure phases. Eu3+ has 2.45 times more preference to get incorporated into the tetragonal than in the monoclinic phase in the mixed phase samples. The general equation for Judd-Ofelt parameters in a compound with mixed constituents and probability of incorporation is introduced, allowing also for a prediction of the spectrum shape based on the Judd-Ofelt parameters of pure-phase compounds. Python software code for estimating the percent of incorporation by multiple linear regression model is also provided.

AB - We report on the results of the first principles calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) of the electronic structure and mechanical properties of K2LiAlF6, both non-doped and doped with Cr3+ ions. The densities of states of K2LiAlF6 and the K2LiAlF6:Cr3+ phosphor as well as the crystal-field strength 10Dq, the Cr3+ 2E→4A2 emission energy, elastic constants, bulk and shear moduli, sound velocities and Debye temperature as functions of hydrostatic pressure ranging from 0 up to 40 GPa were calculated. The present DFT calculations indicate that, the band gap of non-doped K2LiAlF6 increases quadratically with increasing pressure. Further, the crystal field strength 10Dq and the 2E→4A2 emission energy, the Debye temperature, sound velocities and shear moduli of Cr-doped K2LiAlF6 increase with increasing pressure, while the 2E→4A2 emission energy becomes red-shifted, which indicates potential applicability of the studied system for pressure sensing. Such calculations for the title system were performed for the first time; the obtained results provide a firm basis for a deeper understanding of physical properties of both neat and doped functional materials.

AB - The aspect of the detection of hydrogen isotopes in nuclear materials was analyzed in this review. Particular attention was paid to the spectroscopic methods for the detection of hydrogen isotopes in fusion reactor materials since their presence can induce severe problems in terms of material degradation and shortening of its lifetime. The main focus is on laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy, an optical emission method that is efficient, reliable, and fast. Recent results obtained at the VINCA Institute will also be presented.

AB - Irradiated fig pomace pyrochar (IrrPyrFP) is noteworthy as a novel sterilized low-cost sorbent of BTEX, pesticides, and Pb2+ ions. It was produced by applying pyrolysis treatment followed by gamma irradiation modification in order to obtain a highly efficient and sterile sorbent. The characterization of fig pomace before and after pyrolysis, as well as before and after irradiation of the obtained pyrochar, was done using SEM, FTIR, and elemental analysis, while its sorption ability was tested through the removal of examined pollutants by batch sorption experiments. The obtained results suggest that IrrPyrFP could play a significant role in the control of environmental pollutants, as indicated by the maximum adsorption capacities: 42 mg g−1 for BTEX, 0.625 mg g−1 for malathion, 0.495 mg g−1 for chlorpyrifos and 255 mg g−1 for Pb2+. A kinetic study showed that the removal process by IrrPyrFP mainly follows pseudo 2nd kinetics order, while the sorption equilibriums were estimated using the Langmuir and Freundlich model. Overall, the findings of this work suggest that pyrolysis and activation by irradiation of waste biomass is a promising way to produce sterile efficient sorbents for waste-water treatment based on green chemistry. Additionally, the demonstrated application of fig pomace promotes the potential of using this biomass for continual and economical waste management in the rising fig industry.

AB - Povećana konzumacija fruktoze kroz industrijsku hranu doprinosi razvojumetaboličkog sindroma (MetS). MetS prati hronična inflamacija niskog intenziteta kojojdoprinosi oksidativni stres i aktivacija renin-angiotenzin sistema (RAS).
AB - Increased fructose intake via industrial food is associated with metabolic syndrome(MetS). MetS is characterized by chronic low-intensity inflammation caused by oxidativestress and activation of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS). Walnuts are a rich source ofantioxidants and polyunsaturated n-3 fatty acids that exert anti-inflammatory/immunomodulatory effects on cardiometabolic health, which molecularbackground is underexplored.Walnut consumption (2.4 g/day, 6 weeks) reduced systolic blood pressure in ratsfed a fructose-rich diet (10% FRD, 15 weeks), showed a protective effect on theantioxidative axis SIRT1-FoxO3a-MnSOD/catalase and anti-inflammatory cardiac capacity(AA/EPA reduction) and promoted the anti-inflammatory profile of plasma fatty acids(AA/EPA and AA/DHA reduction), which were compromised by FRD. The role of theaxis negative regulators, Nox4 and ChREBP, should be further investigated in the heartbecause the Nox4 level was increased by both, FRD and walnut supplementation, whilethe ChREBP nuclear level was reduced in FRD as well as in control rats subjected towalnuts. FRD activated a signaling pathway that regulated inflammation by increasing thelevels of the transcription factor NF-κB and the key RAS enzyme, ACE, while walnutsupplementation in FRD rats increased ACE2 level, a cardioprotective component of theRAS. The protein/mRNA levels of the RAS receptors, AT1R and AT2R, were not affectedby either of the two nutritional factors. This study confirmed the beneficial effects of walnut consumption oncardiometabolic status and proposed the mechanisms underlying their anti-inflammatoryand antioxidative effects in the heart, indicating the possibility for development of novel,non-pharmacological approaches in cardiometabolic disease therapy.

AB - Improperly storage of fly ash as industrial wastes has been a cause of land contamination issues. These wastes or by-products have the potential to be used as secondary raw materials in construction, promoting the concept of a circular economy that will avoid land contamination. Here we evaluate radiological environmental impacts when wastes that contain elevated levels of naturally occurring radionuclides (NORs) such as fly ash and wood ash are made into 'green cements' such as geopolymers or alkali-activated materials (AAMs). Alkali-activated materials were formed by alkali-activation reaction of wood and fly ash, as a solid precours, and alkali activator solution, sodium hydroxide and sodium silicate. Three differente concentration of alkali solution were used. Determination of radionuclide content was performed by means of gamma-ray spectrometry. The external absorbed gamma dose rate was 68.6-98.1 nGy/h, and external radiation hazard index for alkali-activated material AAM4, AAM6 and AAM12 were 0.544 Bq/kg, 0.575 Bq/kg and 0.403 Bq/kg, respectively. The results of activity concentration measurements in alkali-activated materials indicate potential of their safe application in building constructions. In terms of some the structural characterizations the obtained alkali activated materials were examined.

AB - This research analyzes the fractal nature of the beryllium-7 specific activity time series in the near-surface layer of the atmosphere in Belgrade, Serbia. The aim was to study the dynamics of self-similarity in this series, with a particular focus on the annual cycle. Wavelet analysis and time-dependent detrended moving averages were used to identify characteristic intervals and estimate Hurst exponents. The data on specific activity of beryllium-7 were obtained from the GRAMON database for the location of Belgrade (44.88 °N; 20.58 °E; 95 m a.s.l.). The time series comprises 362 monthly measurements between February 1991 and December 2022. The results indicate a pronounced annual cycle in this time series. Moreover, changes in the local Hurst exponent reveal variations in the behavior of the time series, transitioning from moderately correlated to highly anti-correlated process between 2015. and 2020. This finding will be a subject of a further analysis including other locations from the GRAMON database.

AB - This manuscript presents the results of measurement of naturaly occurring radionuclides and 137Cs in 15 samples of medicinal herbes originating at the theritory of Republic of Serbia. The samples were procured from the Institute for research of medicinal herbes “Dr Josif Pančić” in Belgrade. They were chosen so that they contain various parts (roots, stem or flower) of the same plant in order to assess different distribution of the radionuclides in various plant parts. The aactivity concentration of naturaly occurring radionuclides 238U, 235U i 210Pb was below the minimal detectable concentration (MDC), 226Ra was detected in 3, 137Cs in 5 and 232Th in one sample. Based on the obtained values, ingestion dose was calculated taking into account that a person drinks 0.2L of tea per day. It is found that the ingestion dose is in the range of 13,8 μSv to 32,3 μSv for 137Cs and 79,7 μSv for 226Ra. This is well below the limit of 0.1 mSv/year recommended by the Rulebook Official Gasette 36/18.

AB - Electrocatalytic materials are pivotal for clean chemical production and energy conversion in devices like electrolyzers and fuel cells. These materials usually consist of metallic nanoparticles which serve as active reaction sites, and support materials which provide high surface area, conductivity and stability. When designing novel electrocatalytic composites, the focus is often on the metallic sites, however, the significance of the support should not be overlooked. Carbon materials, valued for their conductivity and large surface area, are commonly used as support in benchmark electrocatalysts. However, using alternative support materials instead of carbon can be beneficial in certain cases. In this minireview, we summarize recent advancements and key directions in developing novel supports for electrocatalysis, encompassing both carbon and non-carbon materials.

AB - The paper presents the measurement results of an independent private measuring station in Požarevac for continuous measurement of the ambient dose equivalent for 2021 and 2022. The station is also equipped with an automatic meteorological station, which is important when interpreting the measurement results due to the impact of precipitation when radon and its daughters are washed from the atmosphere to the ground, which manifests itself as a short-term increase in dose rate. In particular, several interesting cases of increased dose rates caused by natural and artificial sources are presented. Such a private measuring station, which is adequately maintained and has the necessary infrastructure, can be useful as an additional indicator of the radiological situation, in addition to the official state system of timely announcement of a radiological accident, in cases of nuclear accidents and other situations where there is an uncontrolled emission of radioactive effluents into the environment.

The analysis was performed using an accredited method for determining gross alpha and gross beta activity in solid matrix. The measurements were performed in the Radiation and Environmental Protection Department in Vinča Institute of nuclear Sciences on a low-level gas proportional counter Thermo Eberline FHT 770T. The measured values of gross alpha activity varied from 158 Bq/kg to 324 Bq/kg, and from 600 Bq/kg to 1324 Bq/kg for the gross beta activity in soil samples. For plant samples, values ranged from 5 Bq/kg to 167 Bq/kg of dry matter, and from 180 Bq/kg to 584 Bq/kg of dry matter for gross alpha and gross beta activity, respectively. The results of the research are significant, because they provide basic radiological information of vital importance for the investigated area. This is the first attempt to generate data base on the radiation load of soil and crops of the agricultural ecosystem with alpha and beta emitters, which were determined by the screening method for environmental monitoring.

AB - Ocimum americanum L. is a highly valued aromatic plant whose leaves are used not only in traditional cuisine but also in the food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries. This study aimed to identify the chemical profile of essential oil extracted from the leaves of Ocimum americanum by GC-FID and GC/MS grown in acidic soil conditions in the NE region of India. Furthermore, the biological activities like antioxidant, anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-tyrosinase activity were analyzed, as per standard methods. GC and GC/MS analysis identified 16 compounds in which citral-a (48.25%) was found as a major compound, followed by carveol (41.64%). The antioxidant activity was performed using DPPH and ABTS methods; and IC50 value obtained was 8.85 μL/mL and 28.82 μL/mL, respectively. The leaf essential oil of O. americanum exhibited strong anti-diabetic and anti-inflammatory activities, whereas moderate anti-tyrosinase activities with IC50 values of 40.84, 12.81, and 182.74 μL/mL, respectively. Furthermore, the ant-microbial activity was evaluated for four bacterial and four fungal strains, revealing that O. americanum essential oil expresses antifungal activity against S. cereviaceae only with a MIC value of 5±0.47 μg/mL. These evidences clearly indicates that essential oil obtained from the leaf of O. americanum showed potential anti-inflammatory and anti-diabetic activity that can be used as an alternative in pharmaceuticals and food industries as a natural source.

AB - Luminescence thermometry has emerged as a very versatile optical technique for remote temperature measurements, exhibiting a wide range of applicability spanning from cryogenic temperatures to 2000 K. This technology has found extensive utilization across many disciplines. In the last thirty years, there has been significant growth in the field of luminous thermometry. This growth has been accompanied by the development of temperature read-out procedures, the creation of luminescent materials for very sensitive temperature probes, and advancements in theoretical understanding. This review article primarily centers on luminescent nanoparticles employed in the field of luminescence thermometry. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive survey of the recent literature pertaining to the utilization of lanthanide and transition metal nanophosphors, semiconductor quantum dots, polymer nanoparticles, carbon dots, and nanodiamonds for luminescence thermometry. In addition, we engage in a discussion regarding the benefits and limitations of nanoparticles in comparison with conventional, microsized probes for their application in luminescent thermometry.

AB - Phospholipase D (PLD) enzyme is considered a critical regulator of numerous aspects of cell biology and signal transduction pathways. Deregulation of the expression and activity of PLDs has been linked to numerous diseases, including cancer. PLD isoforms and their hydrolysate phosphatidic acid are involved in multiple stages of tumorigenesis, angiogenesis, and metastasis. Numerous in vitro and in vivo studies performed thus far highlighted PLD inhibition as a promising therapeutic strategy against cancer. Considerable research efforts have been dedicated to structure-guided inhibitor design and development of specific potent and nontoxic PLD inhibitors, which may impede multiple aspects of cancer growth and invasion by acting either as a single agent or in combination with chemotherapy/radiotherapy. Based on the established knowledge of these subjects, the therapeutic potentials and limitations of PLD inhibitors application in targeted cancer therapy are discussed in this chapter.

AB - Phospholipases A2 (PLA2) is a superfamily of esterase enzymes essential for the maintenance of cellular homeostasis. PLA2s are involved in a variety of physiological processes, as well as pathological conditions, where their function is disrupted. Disruption of PLA2-regulated metabolism has been linked with severe pathological conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis, cardiovascular diseases, neurological disorders, and cancer. Therefore, the search for effective and selective PLA2 inhibitors is of particular importance for treating pathological conditions where PLA2s are involved, as well as elucidating their functions. Although numerous bioactive compounds from diverse sources, such as plants, marine organisms, and animal sera, are reported as efficient inhibitors of PLA2, none of the PLA2 inhibitors have been successful in clinical trials thus far. Therefore, future research should be directed primarily toward developing selective PLA2 inhibitors that will act on transduction pathways in a targeted manner.

AB - Variations in the hepatitis C virus (HCV) core sequence have been related to disease progression and response to antiviral therapy. Previously we showed that the methylation status of RASSF1A and p16 genes, and IL28B genotypes affects the response to pegylated interferon/ribavirin (PEG-IFN/RBV) therapy. Herein we investigated whether amino acid (aa) substitutions in the HCV core region alone or in combination with IL28B genotypes and RASSF1A/p16 methylation affect the response to PEG-IFN/RBV therapy and liver disease progression. Among 29 examined patients, we found no association between single aa substitutions and response to therapy. However, we observed that patients with the HCV core aa substitution at position 75 and CT/TT IL28B genotypes were non-responders (NR), (P=0.023). Moreover, these patients had unmethylated RASSF1A. In contrast, most patients (75%) with aa substitutions at position 91 and CC IL28B genotype achieved sustained virologic response (SVR), (P=0.030), and 70% of them had methylated RASSF1A gene. Our results suggest that combined analysis of aa substitutions in the core protein, the IL28B rs12979860 polymorphism, and the methylation status of the RASSF1A gene may help in predicting treatment response to PEG-IFN/RBV in genotype 1b chronic hepatitis C patients.

AB - Efficiently achieving platform nonspecific designs with multiple functional requirements, such as arbitrary splitting ratio, low insertion losses, broad bandwidth, and small footprint, poses a significant challenge in the inverse design of optical Splitters. Traditional designs often fall short in meeting all the necessary criteria, while more successful nanophotonic inverse designs often demand substantial time and energy resources per device. Here, we present an efficient inverse design algorithm which provides universal designs of Splitters compliant with all the above constraints and offers significantly greater throughput compared to nanophotonic inverse design. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our method, we designed Splitters with various splitting ratios and fabricated 1×N power Splitters using direct laser writing in a borosilicate platform, which shows zero loss within marginal error, competitive imbalance of < 0.5 dB and a broad bandwidth range of 20 − 60 nm around 640 nm. Notably, our designs can be easily tuned to achieve different splitting ratios. Furthermore, we discussed the scalability of the Splitter footprint.

AB - 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), a Maillard reaction product, can be formed when honey is subjected to heat treatment or a long storage time, becoming volatile and toxic depending on its concentration. The fact that, until today, there is no literature data on the extraction of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) from honey using ionic liquids directed the investigation of the influence of biodegradable cholinium ionic liquids on the formation of aqueous biphasic systems and the application of these systems for the extraction of HMF from honey. The influence of anions of synthesised ionic liquids on the construction of biphasic systems in which an inorganic salt was used as a salting agent was investigated. Then, the extraction of HMF in these systems was examined, and the mechanisms of HMF extraction using ionic liquids were explained using computer simulations. Examining the effect of cholinium ionic liquids (choline chloride ([Ch][Cl]), cholinium nicotinate ([Ch][Nic]), cholinium propionate ([Ch][Prop]), and cholinium butyrate ([Ch][But])) on the formation of aqueous biphasic systems by comparing the phase diagrams, it was concluded that the ability of ionic liquids to form an aqueous biphasic system with tripotassium phosphate (K3PO4) decreases in the following order: [Ch][But] z [Ch][Prop] > [Ch][Nic] > [Ch][Cl]. By applying all tested aqueous biphasic systems for the extraction of HMF from honey, an extraction efficiency of more than 89% was achieved. Complete extraction was achieved using the extraction system with [Ch][But], while the weakest ability to extract HMF was exhibited by the system with [Ch][Cl]. The mechanisms of HMF extraction using ionic liquids are explained on the basis of the optimised structures of the ionic liquid systems with HMF, together with the visualisation of noncovalent interactions, and on the basis of the calculated binding energies DGbin, which can be used as a good predictor of the extraction potential of newly synthesised ionic liquids

AB - Many research efforts have focused on designing new inorganic phosphors to meet different application requirements. The structure-photoluminescence relationship between activator ions and the matrix lattice plays an irreparable role in designing target phosphors. Herein, a series of ABP2O7:Mn2+ (A = Ba/Sr; B = Mg/Zn) phosphors are prepared for a detailed study on the relationship between the luminescence performance and spatial structure and symmetry of the doping site of Mn2+. Due to the weak interaction between nearest B-B pairs, [BO5] is defined as an isolated coordination polyhedron whose structure and symmetry directly influence the photoluminescence of Mn2+. The emission wavelength of Mn2+ is ∼620 nm when it occupies the triangular bipyramid [MgO5] in BaMgP2O7. When Mn2+ occupies the quadrangular pyramid-typed [MgO5] or [ZnO5] in SrMgP2O7, SrZnP2O7, and BaZnP2O7, the emission wavelengths peak at ∼670 nm. We propose a conception of isolated coordination polyhedral confinement to clarify the luminescence performance of Mn2+ in the fivefold coordination configuration with different geometries, which has great theoretical research significance for designing inorganic phosphors.

AB - In recent years, short pulse lasers have made massive progress and space-ready femtosecond laser systems are under development [1]. Moreover, employing time-domain spectroscopy techniques to identify planetary minerals by their spectroscopic fingerprints in the infrared and terahertz frequency range can have technological advantages over conventional spectroscopic techniques such as Fourier-Transform Infrared or Raman spectroscopy. The advantages are compactness, the possibility to replace bulky optical components by electro-optic/acousto-optic photonic techniques and the potential to be chip-integrable. We focus on one particular time-domain technique, coherent phonon spectroscopy (CPS), which is sensitive to Raman-active modes. Here, CPS is demonstrated in single-color operation and thus the simplicity and its insensitivity to fluorescence background add to the advantages of this technique.
