AB - While recognizing the differences in the pathogenesis of different malignancies, the outstanding body of evidence has been accumulated in the past few decades, implicating the role of oxidative stress in the process of cancer initiation and progression. Cancer cells exhibit an altered energy metabolism and highly efficient redox systems that enable rapid cell proliferation and survival in various conditions. The adaptation/resistance of cancer cells to chronic oxidative stress through different mechanisms usually leads to drug resistance. The specific disruption of the redox capacity with either scavenging the excessive intracellular ROS or inducing ROS generation through exogenous oxidative insult represents a promising approach for cancer therapy. A considerable research effort has been dedicated to identifying the therapeutic agents with redox-modulation capacity that may impede cancer. Based on the established knowledge in these subjects, the natural and synthetic redox modulators currently used or under investigation for their potential application in the oxidative stress-targeted cancer therapy are reviewed.

AB - Gamma irradiation provides an alternative pathway to conventional gold nanoparticle synthesis because it is simple, fast, and economical. Here, we employed gamma irradiation at low doses (1–20 kGy) to obtain gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) anchored onto graphene oxide (GO) sheets. GO was selected as a suitable platform for the nucleation and growth of Au NPs because of its large surface area and good dispersibility in water due to the presence of polar oxygen-containing functional groups in its structure. Gamma irradiation at all the applied doses led to the reduction of chloroauric acid and the formation of evenly distributed Au NPs at the GO surface, simultaneously causing the reduction of GO and partial restoration of the graphene structure. As-prepared Au NPs have predominately spheric shapes and the smallest nanoparticles were reported for the dose of 1 kGy. The increase in the irradiation dose caused either the growth of larger particles (5 and 10 kGy) or the broad distribution of particles’ sizes (20 kGy). All samples showed a temperature increase upon exposure to 800 nm laser and photothermal efficiency was the highest for the sample prepared at 20 kGy. © 2022 Elsevier Ltd

AB - Carbon quantum dots as a novel type of carbon nanomaterials have attracted the attention of many researchers because of their unique optical, antibacterial, and anticancer properties as well as their biocompatibility. In this study, for the first time, carbon quantum dots were prepared from o-phenylenediamine dissolved in toluene by a solvothermal route. Subsequently, the prepared carbon quantum dots were encapsulated into polyurethane films by a swelling–encapsulation–shrink method. Analyses of the results obtained by different characterization methods (AFM, TEM, EDS, FTIR, photoluminescence, and EPR) indicate the significant influence of the precursor on structural, chemical, and optical properties. Antibacterial and cytotoxicity tests showed that these dots did not have any antibacterial potential, because of the low extent of reactive oxygen species production, and showed low dark cytotoxicity. By investigating the cellular uptake, it was established that these dots penetrated the HeLa cells and could be used as probes for bioimaging.

AB - The quest for sustainable biomaterials with excellent biocompatibility and tailorableproperties has put polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) into the research spotlight. However, high productioncosts and the lack of bioactivity limit their market penetration. To address this, poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) was combined with a bacterial pigment with stronganticancer activity, prodigiosin (PG), to obtain functionally enhanced PHBV-based biomaterials. Thesamples were produced in the form of films 115.6–118.8 m in thickness using the solvent castingmethod. The effects of PG incorporation on the physical properties (morphology, biopolymer crystallinityand thermal stability) and functionality of the obtained biomaterials were investigated. PGhas acted as a nucleating agent, in turn affecting the degree of crystallinity, thermal stability andmorphology of the films. All samples with PG had a more organized internal structure and highermelting and degradation temperatures. The calculated degree of crystallinity of the PHBV copolymerwas 53%, while the PG1, PG3 and PG3 films had values of 64.0%, 63.9% and 69.2%, respectively.Cytotoxicity studies have shown the excellent anticancer activity of films against HCT116 (coloncancer) cells, thus advancing PHBV biomedical application potential.

AB - To investigate the influence of spinel structure and sintering temperature on the functional properties of BaTiO3/NixZn1−xFe2O4 (x = 0, 0.5, 1), NiFe2O4, ZnFe2O4, and Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 were in situ prepared by thermal decomposition onto BaTiO3 surface from acetylacetonate precursors. As-prepared powders were additionally sintered at 1150 °C and 1300 °C. X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with electron dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) were used for the detailed examination of phase composition and morphology. The magnetic, dielectric, and ferroelectric properties were investigated. The optimal phase composition in the BaTiO3/NiFe2O4 composite, sintered at 1150 °C, resulted in a wide frequency range stability. Additionally, particular phase composition indicates favorable properties such as low conductivity and ideal-like hysteresis loop behavior. The favorable properties of BaTiO3/NiFe2O4 make this particular composite an ideal material choice for further studies on applications of multi-ferroic devices.

AB - The study of Cu(II) from aqueous solutions using the adsorption process on synthetically modified geopolymers was performed under static conditions. Three geopolymers (based on metaphase of Serbian clay, metaphase of German clay and metaphase of German clay plus 10% of carbon cloth) were used. The geopolymers were made by condensing a mixture of metaphases and alkali activator solution at a fixed ratio at room temperature and then at a temperature of 60 °C in a dry oven. Then, the geopolymer samples were pre-crashed to a fixed-radius size. Their properties were characterized by X-ray diffractometry (XRD), Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transform (DRIFT) analysis and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS). Adsorption experiments were carried out under batch process as a function of the dose, concentration of metal, and contact time. The uptake of Cu(II) was rapid, and it increased with increasing metal concentration. The sorption percentage decreased with increasing concentration of Cu(II). The equilibrium adsorption capacity of geopolymers was measured and extrapolated using more isotherms. The data fit very well the linear Langmuir isotherm model. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model can well describe the adsorption behavior of Cu(II) ions with geopolymers samples. These results show that used geopolymers hold great potential to remove Cu(II) from industrial wastewater.

AB - It is well known that geopolymers are a new group of binder materials of alumosilicate origin. Geopolymers are made by the reaction of precursor aluminosilicate materials with alkaline activator solutions. The current research relates to a low-cost and eco-friendly procedure, suitable of being implemented in two easy steps. The first step is the production of a solid phase based on fly ash (Obrenovac, Serbia) and eggshell ash as waste materials rich in calcium. The second step is alkali activating the solid phase using an alkaline activator (a mixture of NaOH and Na2SiO3) and procedures in proper laboratory conditions. Four samples with different eggshell ash content were synthesized. The concentration of used NaOH was 12 mol dm−3. The structural properties of all investigated samples were analyzed by XRD (X-ray diffraction), DRIFT (diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform), SEM (scanning electron microscopy) and UV/Vis spectroscopy analysis. XRD determined the amorphous halo with the presence of quartz as the crystal phase in all of the investigated samples. These results were confirmed by DRIFT analysis. The morphology of the samples was determined by SEM analysis. UV/Vis showed that the material could be a potential adsorbent.

AB - In this study, levan from Bacillus licheniformis NS032 was modified in an aqueous medium by octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA), and the properties of the obtained derivatives were studied. The maximum efficiency in the synthesis reaction was achieved at 40 °C and a polysaccharide slurry concentration of 30 %. Increasing the reagent concentration (2–10 %) led to an increase in the degree of substitution (0.016–0.048). Structures of derivatives were confirmed by FTIR and NMR. Scanning electronic microscopy, thermogravimetry, and dynamic light scattering analyses showed that the derivatives with degrees of substitution of 0.025 and 0.036 retained levan's porous structure and thermostability and showed better colloidal stability than the native polysaccharide. The intrinsic viscosity of derivatives increased upon modification, while the surface tension of the 1 % solution was lowered to 61 mN/m. Oil-in-water emulsions prepared with sunflower oil (10 % and 20 %) by mechanical homogenization and 2 and 10 % derivatives in the continuous phase showed mean oil droplet sizes of 106–195 μm, while the distribution curves exhibited bimodal character. The studied derivatives have a good capacity to stabilize emulsions, as they have a creaming index ranging from 73 % to 94 %. The OSA-modified levans could have potential applications in new formulations of emulsion-based systems.

AB - Geopolymers have excellent physical and mechanical properties, so they can be used as a substitute for ordinary polymers. Geopolymers are ceramic materials, which exhibit the property of brittleness, which can be a limitation in some structural applications. To overcome this shortcoming, a new group of materials (organic geopolymers) was developed. The aim of this work is the synthesis of organic (hybrid) geopolymers. A geopolymer based on metakaolin was synthesized as a reference sample, while polyvinyl alcohol was added as an organic phase for synthesizing a hybrid geopolymer. It was concluded that the systems follow the rule of behavior in liquid systems. The chemical composition of the samples was determined by X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF). Structural and phase characterization of hybrid and reference materials were analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD)and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), which revealed new phases in the PVA-added samples. The results show that the content of added PVA in the reaction mixture affects the phase composition of the synthesized materials. To examine the possibility of adsorption of the samples, Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV/VIS) was used. The morphology was analyzed using a scanning electron microscope with energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM/EDS), where efflorescence was observed and identified. After characterizing the geopolymer with the addition of PVA, we obtained a material that was far more porous than the basic sample, and we can conclude that we have synthesized a material that shows good mechanical properties.

AB - The combination of an intense absorption of visible light and p-type semiconducting nature makes spinel cobalt oxide (Co3O4) a very attractive material for various optoelectronic applications. However, the traditional methods for its synthesis have been either time- and energy-consuming or relying on toxic chemicals. To solve this issue, a simple, facile, and eco-friendly method of synthesis was successfully developed to obtain spinel Co3O4 nanoparticles. The novel method for obtaining pure and monophasic Co3O4 reported here is based on the thermal decomposition of hexaaquacobalt(II) D-camphor10-sulfonate at 900 °C. This fast solid-state synthesis route overcomes the disadvantages of many combustion methods, most critically by avoiding the use of toxic organic solvents. The synthesized material was subjected to a detailed characterization to assess its potential for use as a nanocatalyst. The band gap measurements indicated the presence of two band gaps, one at 2.10 eV and another at 1.22 eV, confirming the purity and semiconducting properties of the sample. The electrochemical studies demonstrated a significant enhancement in the electron transfer kinetics with the addition of the synthesized Co3O4 to the carbon-paste electrode, leading to an enhanced electrocatalytic performance. These prominent functional properties, suitable for a wide range of technological applications, pave way for the implementation of the reported method for the synthesis of Co3O4 on a larger industrial scale. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l.

AB - We use Kramers-Kronig analysis and ab initio calculations to develop a simple analytical method for including the effects of high-energy interband electron transitions in the density polarization function of doped graphene and doped phosphorene in the optical limit. The resulting formulas are suitable for applications in the terahertz to the mid-infrared range of frequencies, where the interband electron transitions are shown to give rise to static screening with a suitably chosen in-plane polarizability. In the case of phosphorene, each component of its static polarizability tensor can be computed from a sum-rule–like formula using the ab initio data for the real part of the corresponding component of the full optical interband conductivity tensor of that material.

AB - In this paper hydrogen sorption properties of Mg–V multilayer thin films are studied. Thin films are synthesized by means of RF magnetron sputtering. Further modification of material is done using low energy H ion irradiation. The hydrogen sorption properties and kinetics are assessed using TOF-ERDA, in situ optical microscopy coupled with TDS, and TEM analysis. The results of TOF-ERDA indicate full hydrogenation of samples, although the presence of oxygen throughout the film is observed. It corresponds to the formation of MgO, also confirmed by EELS results with hydride plasmon peak hindered by MgO peak. Hydrogenation causes severe damage to the surface of the film and fragmentation of the V layer. TDS and optical analysis indicate lower desorption temperatures for thinner films. The desorption onset does not depend on defects concentration. The kinetic analysis further shows that the apparent activation energy for the thinner film is two times lower.

AB - An active packaging based on the composite film was developed by incorporation of oregano oil as an antimicrobial agent into a cellulose acetate/polycaprolactone diol blend (CA/PCL-diol). A novel plasticizer based on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) glycolysis product (bis(hydroxyethyl terephthalate)) and tartaric acid was synthesized and its influence on the structural, surface, mechanical, barrier, and thermal properties were investigated. The obtained results have shown that plasticizer also has a compatibilizing effect, improving the miscibility of polymers in a blend. A sample with the optimal amount of plasticizer (30 wt%), as well as the best mechanical and barrier properties, was used for the preparation of series with different amounts of oregano oil (3, 6, and 9 wt%). The synthesized azo dye—5-(4-bromo-phenyl azo)-3-amido-6-hydroxy-4-methyl-2-pyridone, soluble in acetone, as well as a blend and plasticizer, has been shown as an adequate one for this composition, due to its ability to achieve a good pigmentation in a low amount (0.3 wt% per polymer blend weight), to absorb UV light, and decrease the aging of the material. Contemporary lifestyle has imposed a need for ready-to-eat (RTE) meals which saves consumers time. RTE food packaging should meet certain requirements such as the ability to prolong shelf-life and preserve the freshness of the food product, and at the same time to make a minimal amount of waste after usage, considering the fact that it is mostly single-use plastic food packaging. Optimal mechanical properties, biodegradability, and additional functions make these films suitable for the packaging of ready-to-eat (RTE) food such as fresh salad.

AB - The effect of laser (532 nm line of Verdi G) heating during the Raman measurements, on partial decomposition of Bi12SiO20 single crystal, was addressed in this study. The degree of decomposition directly depends on the power density and duration of the laser treatment, which are registered by the phonon Raman spectra. After laser treatment, AFM measurements register additional small spherical islands on the surface. Analysis performed on irradiated and unirradiated samples showed significant changes in transmission spectra, X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern, Verdet constant, magneto-optical property, and absorption coefficient. The material obtained after laser irradiation can be described as specific nanocomposite consisting of bismuth oxide and silicon oxide-based nano-objects (dimensions below 15 nm in diameter), which are arranged in a matrix of Bi12SiO20.

AB - In this study, we considered some pesticides as active substances within formulations for the protection of plant-based food in the Republic of Serbia in silico, because these pesticides have not often been investigated in this way previously, and in an analytical way, because there are not very many available fast, cheap, and easy methods for their determination in real agricultural samples. Seven pesticides were detected in selected agricultural products (tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, and grapes) using the QuEChERS methodology and HPLC-DAD. Standard curves for the investigated pesticides (chlorantraniliprole, methomyl, metalaxyl, thiacloprid, acetamiprid, emamectin benzoate, and cymoxanil) show good linearity, with R2 values from 0.9785 to 0.9996. The HPLC-DAD method is fast, and these pesticides can be determined in real spiked samples in less than 15 min. We further characterized the pesticides we found in food based on physicochemical properties and molecular descriptors to predict the absorption, distribution, metabolism, elimination, and toxicity (ADMET) of the compounds. We summarized the data supporting their effects on humans using various computational tools to determine their potential adverse effects. The results of our prediction study show that all of the selected pesticides considered in this study have good oral bioavailability, and those with high toxicity, therefore, could be harmful to human health. Chlorantraniliprole was shown in a molecular docking study as a good starting point for a new Alzheimer’s disease drug candidate.

AB - Despite presenting a practical approach for the characterization of the environmental risk of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) derived from steel production facilities, the analysis of the spatial distribution of bioavailable PTEs concentrations in the soil is frequently overlooked in the management of polluted sites. In this study, the diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA)-extractable forms of PTEs were investigated in soils surrounding the largest Serbian steel production plant. The correlation and geostatistical analysis indicated their pronounced variability suggesting the anthropogenic origin of most investigated elements, apparently from the steel production facility. The detailed visualization of variables and observations derived by self-organizing maps (SOMs) revealed the homologies in PTEs’ distribution patterns, implying the common origin of some elements. These observations were confirmed by principal component analysis (PCA) and positive matrix factorization (PMF). The аpplied approach supports a comprehensive assessment of contaminated sites' ecological and health risks and provides a basis for soil remediation.

AB - Gold nanoparticles were functionalized by amino acid tryptophan and vitamin riboflavin - a resonance energy transfer (RET) pair of biomolecules. The presence of the gold nanoparticles resulted in 65% increase in RET efficiency. Because of enhanced RET efficiency, the photobleaching dynamics of the fluorescent molecules at the surface of the nanoparticles is different from that of molecules in solution. The observed effect was used for detection of the functionalized nanoparticles within biological material rich with autofluorescent species. Synchrotron radiation deep-ultraviolet fluorescence microscopy is used to study the photobleaching dynamics of the fluorescence centers within human hepatocellular carcinoma Huh7.5.1 cells incubated with the nanoparticles. The fluorescent centers were classified according to their photobleaching dynamics, which enabled the discrimination of the cell areas where the accumulation of the nanoparticles takes place, even though the particles were smaller than the spatial resolution of the images.

AB - When planning the development of the energy sector, significant attention is given to the energy from the renewable sources, amongst which the biomass has an important role. Computational fluid mechanics and machine learning models are the powerful and efficient tools which allow the analysis of various heat and mass transfer phenomena in energy facilities. In this study, the in-house developed CFD code and machine learning models (Random Forest, Gradient Boosting and Artificial Neural Network) for predicting the biomass trajectories, particle mass burnout and residence time in a swirl burner reactor are presented. Pulverized biomass combustion cases (fine straw, pinewood and switch grass) with various mean diameters (ranging between 60 and 650 μm) and different shape factors (within the range 0–1) are considered. The results of numerical simulations revealed a noticeably nonlinear dependence between the input values (particle types, sizes and shapes) and the output values (particle trajectories, mass burnout and residence time), mostly due to the complex swirling flow in the reactor. For particles with the mean diameters within the ranges considered, the mass burnout of particles generally decreases as the biomass particle shape factor increases. The residence time of pulverized biomass in the reactor shows in most cases a decreasing trend as the particle shape factor increases. Artificial Neural Network showed the best predictions for both particle mass burnout (RMSE = 0.083 and R2 = 0.937) and particle residence time (RMSE = 1.145 s and R2 = 0.900), providing the reliable assessment of these important indicators in the combustion process.

abstract = "When planning the development of the energy sector, significant attention is given to the energy from the renewable sources, amongst which the biomass has an important role. Artificial Neural Network showed the best predictions for both particle mass burnout (RMSE = 0.083 and R2 = 0.937) and particle residence time (RMSE = 1.145 s and R2 = 0.900), providing the reliable assessment of these important indicators in the combustion process.",

AB - The flammability of polyester textiles remains a significant challenge that must be overcome to allow their use in a variety of clothing and upholstery applications. In this work, water-based polyelectrolyte solutions composed of chitosan (CH) and pectin (P), as carbon-rich biomacromolecules, and mono ammonium phosphate (MAP) were deposited on enzyme/corona modified polyester via layer-by-layer (LbL) deposition. Four bilayers (BL) of 1% CH3/(1% P-30% MAP)4.2 renders the polyester fabric self-extinguishing in vertical flame testing. This recipe yields a 42.6% lower peak heat release rate and a nearly 40% reduction in the fire growth capacity, compared to uncoated polyester, as measured by micro cone calorimetry. The enzyme/corona modification, combined with the CH/(P-MAP) intumescent system, results in a very effective flame retardant treatment with few BL deposited.

AB - Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is a polymer material widely used in dental applications due to its excellent biocompatibility, stable physicochemical properties, easy manipulation, and low cost. The combination of biocompatible polymers and ceramics has great potential for the development of materials in the dental industry with improved mechanical properties. The addition of Al2O3 nanoparticles to PMMA can significantly improve its compressive and flexural strengths and wear resistance. Since this material is used in dental applications, it requires a high degree of product sterility. This can easily be achieved with gamma radiation treatment. Gamma radiation not only ensures the sterility of the product but can also affects changes in numerous material properties. The aim of this paper is to determine the influence of different doses of gamma radiation on the microbiological purity and changes in the mechanical and thermal properties of the PMMA/Al2O3 composite as well as the microstructural and color changes. It was found that the dose of radiation of 25 kGy is sufficient for complete sterilization of the product. This radiation dose improves the mechanical properties of the material and thermal stability. On the other hand, the dose of 25 kGy does not affect the morphology of the exposed sample and has small effect on the color change.

AB - Over the past few decades, the number of cancer cases attributed to environmental and occupational carcinogens, such as asbestos, arsenic, and indoor and outdoor air pollution, decreased in high-income countries. These exposures are expected to increase for low- to middle-income countries, where industrialization expands, and populations grow. Still, there are a small number of studies from these countries on carcinogenic occupational and environmental exposures and their associations with neoplastic outcomes. The estimation of human cancer's burden attributed to environmental and occupational exposures in low- to middle-income countries is uncertain. Despite the high incidence of carcinogenic exposures reported in many such countries, the exposures' effects are poorly studied due to different limitations, such as lack of resources and government support. It is highly relevant to review key exposures and outcomes related to specific environmental and occupational carcinogens in the context of global health challenges faced by developing countries, especially considering new findings on this topic in the last few years. © 2023 Nova Science Publishers, Inc. AB - Drug resistance is a critical problem in health care that affects therapy outcomes and requires new approaches to drugdesign. SARS-CoV-2 Mpro mutations are of concern as they can potentially reduce therapeutic efficacy. Viral infections are amongst themany disorders for which nutraceuticals have been employed as an adjunct therapy. The aim of this study was to examine the potentialin vitro activity of L-arginine and vitamin C against SARS-CoV-2 Mpro. Methods: The Mpro inhibition assay was developed by cloning, expression, purification, and characterization of Mpro. Selected compounds were then screened for protease inhibition. Results: Largininewas found to be active against SARS-CoV-2 Mpro, while a vitamin C/L-arginine combination had a synergistic antiviral actionagainst Mpro. These findings confirm the results of our previous in silico repurposing study that showed L-arginine and vitamin C werepotential Mpro inhibitors. Moreover, they suggest a possible molecular mechanism to explain the beneficial effect of arginine in COVIDpatients. Conclusions: The findings of the current study are important because they help to identify COVID-19 treatments that areefficient, inexpensive, and have a favorable safety profile. The results of this study also suggest a possible adjuvant nutritional strategyfor COVID-19 that could be used in conjunction with pharmacological agents.

AB - The viral G-protein-coupled receptor (vGPCR) BILF1 encoded by the Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) is an oncogene and immunoevasin and can downregulate MHC-I molecules at the surface of infected cells. MHC-I downregulation, which presumably occurs through co-internalization with EBV-BILF1, is preserved among BILF1 receptors, including the three BILF1 orthologs encoded by porcine lymphotropic herpesviruses (PLHV BILFs). This study aimed to understand the detailed mechanisms of BILF1 receptor constitutive internalization, to explore the translational potential of PLHV BILFs compared with EBV-BILF1.

AB - The human health risks of cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and nickel (Ni) in fifty regular and slim cigarette brands available in the Serbian market were evaluated. Distributions on per-cigarette basis concentrations of these metals, as determined by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry, were used as inputs in the probabilistic risk assessment. The contents of these metals in cigarettes varied significantly. Larger quantities of the studied metals were observed in regular cigarettes than in slim cigarettes, but the concentration levels per cigarette tobacco mass were higher in slim cigarettes. The metal concentrations in counterfeit cigarettes were marginally higher than those in authentic brands. Based on the mean concentrations, Pb was the most abundant toxic metal, followed by Ni and Cd. The calculated values of the cumulative hazard index (HI) and incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) indicated a low noncarcinogenic risk and low but not negligible carcinogenic risk from Cd, Pb, and Ni. The mean HI and ILCR values obtained using probabilistic and deterministic approaches were similar. A Monte Carlo simulation was employed to minimize the uncertainty of health risk estimation. The sensitivity analysis revealed that the most influential factor was cigarette mass followed by Cd content.
