AB - Cholesterol as very important biomolecule is the precursor of many biologically significant compounds which give strength and flexibility to the biological membranes. It is also a crucial component in lipoproteins, and has an important role to transport hydrophobic molecules in hydrophilic media such as blood [1, 2]. The analytical performance of carbon paste electrodes (CPE) bulk modified with ionic liquid 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide ([AMIM][DCA]), and surface modified with platinum on graphitized carbon (Pt-C) or platinum-ruthenium alloy on graphitized carbon (Pt,Ru-C) for analysis of hydrogen peroxide (H 2O2) were compared. The prepared working electrodes were characterized using scanning electron microscopy–energydispersive X-ray spectrometry, together with electrochemical impedance spectroscopic, cyclic voltammetric, and amperometric techniques. After method optimization, an enzyme cholesterol oxidase (ChOx) was immobilized on the surface of Pt,Ru-C/IL-CPE by Nafion®. The improved cholesterol amperometric determination was achieved in phosphate buffer solution pH 7.50 at a working potential of 0.60 V. Under the optimized experimental conditions, a linear relationship between oxidation current and cholesterol concentration was in the concentration range from 0.31 to 2.46 µM, with an estimated detection limit of 0.13 µM and relative standard deviation (RSD) below 4.2%. The optimized amperometric method in combination with the developed ChOx/Pt,Ru-C/IL-CPE biosensor showed good repeatability and high selectivity towards cholesterol biosensing despite the presence of possible interferences. The ChOx/Pt,Ru-C/IL-CPE was tested for the determination of the free cholesterol, by its enzymatic reaction product H 2O2, in a human blood serum sample. The percentage recovery ranged from 99.08 to 102.81%, while RSD was below 2.0% for untreated, as well as for spiked human blood serum sample.

AB - This study aimed to investigate the adsorption of As(V), phosphate, and textile dye Acid Green 25 (AG-25) on layered double hydroxides Mn-Fe_LDH and corresponding membranes (wCell/Mn-Fe_LDH). The wCell membrane, derived from waste tobacco boxes, was formed by cross-linking of epoxy and amino modified cellulose fibers with epoxy modified Mn-Fe_LDH and lysine as cross-linker. Structural and morphological analyses were conducted for Mn-Fe_LDH and wCell/Mn-Fe_LDH. The batch system explored pH, contact time, temperature, and initial concentration effects on wCell/Mn-Fe_LDH adsorption efficiency. Adsorption capacities of 82.71, 106.9, and 130.3 mg g−1 were achieved for As(V), phosphate, and AG-25, respectively, indicating effective anionic species removal. Kinetic analysis suggested intraparticle diffusion as the rate-limiting step. Thermodynamic parameters and ionic strength effects indicated a physisorption mechanism for AG-25 and surface complexation for As(V) and phosphate. Biodegradation experiments after five adsorption/desorption cycles revealed the membrane’s decomposition, with phosphate’s strong bonding releasing essential elements valuable for soil fertilization. Effluent wastewater treatment demonstrated low environmental impact through the formation of insoluble As(V) salts and photocatalytic dye degradation.

AB - Multiple sclerosis (MS), a noncurable autoimmune neurodegenerative disease, requires constant research that could improve understanding of both environmental and genetic factors that lead to its occurrence and/or progression. Recognition of the genetic basis of MS further leads to an investigation of the regulatory role of genetic variants on gene expression. Among risk variants for MS, Ikaros zinc finger 3 (IKZF3) gene variant rs12946510 was identified as one of the top-ranked and the expression quantitative trait loci (eQTL) for genes residing in chromosomal locus 17q12- 21. The study aimed to investigate the association of gene expression of the immunologically relevant genes, which map to indicated locus, ORMDL3, GSDMB, and IKZF3, with MS and rs12946510 genotype, taking into account disease phase, clinical parameters of disease progression, and severity and immunomodulatory therapy. We used TaqMan® technology for both allelic discrimination and gene expression determination in 67 relapsing MS patients and 50 healthy controls. Decreased ORMDL3 and GSDMB mRNA levels had significant associations with MS and rs12946510 TT rare homozygote among patients. Significant positive correlations between ORMDL3 and GSDMB mRNA expression were observed in both patients and controls. We detected the significant between-effect of sex and rs12946510 on the expression of ORMDL3 in the patient group and interferon β therapy and rs12946510 on GSDMB expression. Our results show the association of ORMDL3 and GSDMB mRNA expression with the clinical manifestation of MS and confirm that IKZF3 rs12946510 exerts the eQTL effect on both genes in multiple sclerosis. Besides providing novel insight related to MS phases and interferon β therapy, the study results confirm previous studies on regulatory genetic variants, autoimmunity, and MS.

AB - This study explores the use of a series of cholinium ionic liquids (ILs) or salts in combination with polypropylene glycol 400 to form aqueous biphasic systems (ABS) for extracting various polarity pesticides (dicamba, clomazone, pyraclostrobin, and deltamethrin) from water. We assessed five cholinium-based salting-out agents ([Ch][DHP], [Ch]Cl, [Ch][Ac], [Ch][Lac], and [Ch][Nic]), chosen for their structural diversity and unique properties, such as high salting-out potential and different ability to undergo specific interactions. Liquid-liquid equilibrium phase diagrams were established, and partition experiments were conducted to evaluate extraction efficiency. Different partition patterns were obtained for studied pesticides, with [Ch][DHP] demonstrating the highest efficiency exceeding 90 % for each target pesticide due to its strong salting-out ability. On the other hand, more diverse partition trends due to specific interactions were obtained for low-melting cholinium-ILs ABS. The effect of pH and temperature on the partitioning behavior in [Ch][Ac]-based ABS highlighted the cholinium ILs extraction system's customizable nature. Focusing on [Ch]Cl for its eco-friendly aspects, widespread availability and excellent extraction performance, we optimized parameters for the removal of pesticides from real samples, applying the technology to spiked agricultural wastewater with an extraction efficiency of over 99 %. Our findings demonstrate the potential of cholinium-based IL-ABS in reducing environmental pollution through efficient pesticide extraction.

AB - Surface contamination and transmission can lead to Hospital Acquired Infections (HAI) in a healthcare environment. To tackle this problem, a sustainable antimicrobial coating is desirable. Photocatalytic coatings with titanium dioxide (TiO2) as the main component activated by UV light are one option. In order to implement the coating in a real-world hospital setting the photocatalytic component must show activity under visible light. In this article the TiO2 photocatalyst was synthesised as both 2- and 3- component composites with polyaniline (PANI) or poly(aniline-co-3-aminobenzoic acid) (fPANI) and Ag nanoparticles to achieve photocatalytic performance activated by visible light. The UV-DRS results supported the visible light photocatalytic capability of both 2- and 3-component composite systems, and the ESR spectra exhibited the presence of charge carriers (unpaired electrons), which was confirmed by conductivity studies. The intensity of the ESR peak increases around 3-fold for PANI/fPANI-TiO2-Ag composites compared to pure PANI/fPANI. The conductivity of pure PANI and fPANI was only mildly enhanced in 3-component systems, which could be due to presence of TiO2, whereas the value increased by around three times for PANI/fPANI-Ag 2-component system due to conductive Ag nanoparticles. The composites with fPANI showed improved antimicrobial activity than PANI composites against three representative microorganisms Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and a model viral strain bacteriophage Phi X 174. Finally, we proposed a mechanism for photocatalytic activity for both 2- and 3- component systems.

AB - Anorthite ceramics (CaAl2Si2O8) was obtained by slip casting of water suspension of kaolin (Al2O3·2SiO2·2H2O) and CaCO3 as a source of CaO. A relative density of 87 % of the theoretical density was achieved after a 3-h-long sintering of green samples at 1200 °C. It was found that slip casting allows the fabrication of anorthite with relatively small pores (<8 μm) which was beneficial for achieving a high fracture strength of 129 MPa and good thermal shock resistance. For a quantitative measurement of thermal shock resistance, a critical temperature interval (ΔTc) was determined by a reduction in the mean fracture strength of at least 30 %. The experimentally determined ΔTc of 300 °C was higher than the value calculated by the equation assuming that the thermal stress created during quenching causes the fracture. It was found that the discrepancy between experimental and calculated values of ΔTc could be explained by an introduction of cracks of various sizes by indentation method and careful observation of crack growth initiation after quenching from various temperatures. It is believed that the reason for the discrepancy lies in the different nature of stress that was used in the theoretical calculation and the stress that acts during sample quenching.

abstract = "Anorthite ceramics (CaAl2Si2O8) was obtained by slip casting of water suspension of kaolin (Al2O3·2SiO2·2H2O) and CaCO3 as a source of CaO. It is believed that the reason for the discrepancy lies in the different nature of stress that was used in the theoretical calculation and the stress that acts during sample quenching.",

AB - Introduction Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has gained significant attention due to its superiority over conventional treatments. In the context of skin cancers and nonmalignant skin diseases, topical application of photosensitizer formulations onto affected skin, followed by illumination, offers distinct advantages. Topical PDT simplifies therapy by providing easy access to the skin, increasing drug concentration within the target area, and confining residual photosensitivity to the treated skin. However, the effectiveness of topical PDT is often hindered by challenges such as limited skin penetration or photosensitizer instability. Additionally, the hypoxic tumor environment poses further limitations. Nanocarriers present a promising solution to address these challenges. Areas covered The objective of this review is to comprehensively explore and highlight the role of various nanocarriers in advancing topical PDT for the treatment of skin diseases. The primary focus is to address the challenges associated with conventional topical PDT approaches and demonstrate how nanotechnology-based strategies can overcome these challenges, thereby improving the overall efficiency and efficacy of PDT. Expert opinion Nanotechnology has revolutionized the field of PDT, offering innovative tools to combat the unfavorable features of photosensitizers and hurdles in PDT. Nanocarriers enhance skin penetration and stability of photosensitizers, provide controlled drug release, reduce needed dose, increase production of reactive oxygen species, while reducing side effects, thereby improving PDT effectiveness.

AB - This research explores the synthesis, characterization, and biological activities of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) derived from acetone (AgNPs-acetone) and aqueous (AgNPs-H2O) extracts of Agrimonia eupatoria. The nanoparticles exhibit isometric morphology and uniform size distribution, as elucidated through Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and high-resolution TEM (HRTEM) analyses. The utilization of Scanning Transmission Microscopy (STEM) with High-Angle Annular Dark-Field (HAADF) imaging and energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS) confirms the crystalline nature of AgNPs. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) analysis reveals identical functional groups in the plant extracts and their corresponding AgNPs, suggesting the involvement of phytochemicals in the reduction of silver ions. Spectrophotometric monitoring of the synthesis process, influenced by various parameters, provides insights into the kinetics and optimal conditions for AgNP formation. The antioxidant activities of the plant extracts and synthesized AgNPs are evaluated through DPPH and ABTS methods, highlighting AgNPs-acetone as a potent antioxidant. Third-instar larvae exposed to the extracts have differential effects on DNA damage, with the acetone extract demonstrating antigenotoxic properties. Similarly, biosynthesized AgNPs-acetone displays antigenotoxic effects against EMS-induced DNA damage. The genotoxic effect of water extract and AgNPs-acetone was dose-dependent. Hemolytic potential is assessed on rat erythrocytes, revealing that low concentrations of AgNPs-acetone and AgNPs-H2O had a nontoxic effect on erythrocytes. Cytotoxicity assays demonstrate time-dependent and dose-dependent effects, with AgNPs-acetone exhibiting superior cytotoxicity. Proapoptotic activity is confirmed through apoptosis induction, emphasizing the potential therapeutic applications of AgNPs. The antimicrobial activity of AgNPs reveals concentration-dependent effects. AgNPs-H2O display better antibacterial activity, while antifungal activities are comparable between the two nanoparticle types.

AB - J. nigra leaf contains mixture of various pharmacologically active compounds and it is assumed that they may have the potential radioprotective effect. The purpose of this work was to predict radioprotective doses by correlating changes in organ distribution of radiopharmaceuticals with extract dose levels and rat body weight using response surface methodology (RSM) based on a second-order polynomial equation. The extract was administered daily by oral gavage to rats at dose of 6.9, 10.3, or 13.7 mg kg−1 body weight (bw) day−1 for 10 days. On the eleventh day, 0.1 ml of the one radiopharmaceutical (Na99mTcO4, 99mTc-dimercaptosuccinic acid and 99mTc-tin colloid) was injected into the tail vein. The statistical parameters: the coefficient of determination (0.81–0.95), the coefficient of variation (3.05–11.1), the adequate precision (8.82–19.12) and the mean relative percentage deviation (± 2.3–8.2) were indicated the precision and reliability of RSM. Using RSM, the predicted daily dose of leaf extract ranging from 11.19 to 11.99 mg kg−1 bw may be considered as an optimal daily radiopotective dose for protection of organs from radiation in cases of planned radiation exposures.

AB - Magnesium titanate ceramics were prepared by reactive spark plasma sintering (SPS) at 1200 °C for 5 min. Prior to sintering, MgO and TiO2 powders were mixed by high energy ball milling (HEBM) for 15, 30, or 60 min. The effect of milling time on phase composition was analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) for milled powders and sintered specimens. The morphology of the sintered ceramics was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), while elemental distribution was determined by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The presence of the MgTi2O5 phase was detected in XRD and was confirmed by EDS analysis. Microcracking was observed for specimens prepared with longer milling times and attributed to the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) mismatch dominantly due to the anisotropic crystal structure of MgTiO3 phase. The sample milled for 15 min showed the highest Vickers hardness due to less or no microcracking and nearly full density. The dielectric measurements in the range of 10 Hz–250 MHz demonstrated extremely high dielectric permittivity, as high as 104 at 1 kHz. An increase in loss tangents was observed due to oxygen vacancy formation, which was promoted by the vacuum environment during SPS. Oxygen vacancy-related dielectric relaxation was also detected and explained.

AB - Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a highly pure polysaccharide biopolymer that can be produced by various bacterial genera. Even though BC lacks functional properties, its porosity, three-dimensional network, and high specific surface area make it a suitable carrier for functional composite materials. In the present study, BC-producing bacteria were isolated from kombucha beverage and identified using a molecular method. Two sets of the BC hydrogels were produced in static conditions after four and seven days. Afterwards, two different synthesis pathways were applied for BC functionalization. The first method implied the incorporation of previously synthesized HAp/TiO2 nanocomposite using an immersion technique, while the second method included the functionalization of BC during the synthesis of HAp/TiO2 nanocomposite in the reaction mixture. The primary goal was to find the best method to obtain the functionalized material. Physicochemical and microstructural properties were analyzed by SEM, EDS, FTIR, and XRD methods. Further properties were examined by tensile test and thermogravimetric analysis, and antimicrobial activity was assessed by a total plate count assay. The results showed that HAp/TiO2 was successfully incorporated into the produced BC hydrogels using both methods. The applied methods of incorporation influenced the differences in morphology, phase distribution, mechanical and thermal properties, and antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923), Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922), Proteus mirabilis (ATCC 12453), and Candida albicans (ATCC 10231). Composite material can be recommended for further development and application in environments that are suitable for diseases spreading.

AB - This paper analyzes the influence of the anomalous diffusive effects caused by micro-scale heterogeneity and kinetic and inertial thermal relaxations on the optically induced thermoelastic bending component of the photoacoustic response. We calculated the temperature distribution for a one-dimensional heat transfer problem with planar and periodic excitation, neglecting the influence of thermoelastic strains on the temperature profile. Thermoelastic bending was evaluated using a theoretical approximation of a thin plate, while pressure fluctuations in the photoacoustic cell were obtained by assuming adiabatic changes in the closed air. The model analysis shows that the relaxation processes could significantly affect the mechanical piston component of the photoacoustic response at frequencies higher than the minima of the inverse of two thermal relaxation times, while the influence of micro-scale heterogeneity is observable in the whole frequency range.

AB - Toxic elements, lead, and copper are often found in wastewater discharged from industries such as mining. The discharge of untreated effluent poses severe environmental challenges and sorption methods using agricultural waste materials are proposed as an efficient and cost-effective solution. For this research, activated sunflower material (ASM) was prepared from abundantly available agricultural sunflower waste residues and utilised to remove Pb2+ and Cu2+ ions from an aqueous medium. To begin, we examine variables that may have an impact on the adsorption process, such as pH, contact time, adsorbent dose, and initial concentration using Box-Behnken Design (BBD) to find optimal conditions. Maximum removal efficiency was found at a pH of 5, contact time of 180 min, and initial concentration of 50 mg/L for Pb2+ and 150 mg/L for Cu2+. Additionally, adsorbent dose differed by element, for Cu2+ it was 200 mg, whilst for Pb2+ it was 124 mg. Features of activated carbon such as morphology, elemental composition, textural properties, and surface functionalities were characterised using SEM-EDS, BET, FTIR, and XPS. The adsorption equilibrium data were analysed by Langmuir, Freundlich, and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm models. It was found that the obtained results for Pb2+ adsorption were better described with the Freundlich isotherm model. Maximum adsorption capacities for Pb2+ and Cu2+ were 91.8 mg/g and 20.5 mg/g, respectively. Furthermore, kinetic studies confirmed that the adsorption process followed a pseudo-first-order kinetic model for Pb2+, but for Cu2+ all applied kinetic models fitted experimental data with the same values of the correlation coefficient (R2 = 0.99). After comprehensive analysis using the methods mentioned above, ASM was tested for the removal of Cu2+ from mining wastewater sample, and the obtained removal efficiency was 98.6% ± 2.0%. The results of desorption experiments conducted, confirm that ASM has good potential to be reused for the purpose of removing Cu2+ from wastewater.

AB - This paper explains the basis for the excitation energy-independent fluorescence emission of biomass-derived carbon dots (CDs) and shows that these CDs have excellent anti-melanoma and anti-metastatic potential. Additionally, we demonstrate that the black carrots´-derived CDs can be exploited as cell cycle-sensing agents, because of the interaction with chromatin material. Besides their optical properties, fluorescent CDs have gained increased attention for image-guided cancer treatment due to their water solubility, environmental friendliness, affordability, ease of synthesis, and primary biocompatibility. CDs have excellent photostability, determined by their precursors and synthesis pathways. In this study, CDs with chemically homogenous surface functional groups were made using a hydrothermal technique from black carrot extract, an anthocyanin-rich substance derived from biomass. The anti-cancer and anti-metastatic properties of black carrot-derived CDs can be attributed to flavylium cations on the surface, spherical forms, and high water dispersibility. Most importantly, these CDs demonstrate a stable emission at a single wavelength, 612 nm, independent of the excitation energy, which we have explained theoretically for the first time.

AB - In the present paper, polymerization of alkali activated metakaolin (MK) and its structural changing, using 2M NaOH, 8M NaOH, and 16M NaOH solutions were followed by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFT), Raman spectroscopy and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM). XPS analysis revealed that changing of NaOH concentration did not affect the types of formed bonds in the material. At the same time, the amount of sodium and aluminum increased with the NaOH molarity. The latter steps could be especially interesting because it may indicate the possibility of 'dosing' the amount of Al incorporated by changing the NaOH concentration in the solution. DRIFT analysis revealed that the absorption band for AlIV located at 800 cm-1 is shifted towards the smaller values. Changing the concentration of NaOH, the chemical content did not change, but the structural changes are observed. Raman spectroscopy detected that the most dominant peaks at ∼400 cm-1 and 519 cm-1 originate from Si-O-Al and Si-O-Si bending modes. With increasing the NaOH concentration, peaks at 1019-1060 cm-1 become more prominent as a result of polymerization. Both analyzes (DRIFT and Raman) confirmed the presence of quartz. SEM analysis showed that different structures are created by changing the concentration of NaOH.

AB - The radiolabeled iron oxide nanoparticles constitute an attractive choice to be used as dual-modality contrast agents (DMCAs) in nuclear medical diagnosis, due to their ability to combine the benefits of two imaging modalities, for instance single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Before the use of any DMCA, the investigation of its plasma extra- and on/intra cellular distribution in peripheral human blood is of paramount importance. Here, we focus on the in vitro investigation of the distribution of 99mTc-DPD-Fe3O4 DMCA in donated peripheral human blood (the ligand 2-3-dicarboxypropane-1-1-diphosphonic-acid is denoted as DPD). Initially, we described the experimental methods we performed for the radiosynthesis of the 99mTc-DPD-Fe3O4, the preparation of whole blood and blood plasma samples, and their incubation conditions with 99mTc-DPD-Fe3O4. More importantly, we employed a gamma-camera apparatus for the direct imaging of the 99mTc-DPD-Fe3O4-loaded whole blood and blood plasma samples when subjected to specialized centrifugation protocols. The direct comparison of the gamma-camera data obtained at the exact same samples before and after their centrifugation enabled us to clearly identify the distribution of the 99mTc-DPD-Fe3O4 in the two components, plasma and cells, of peripheral human blood.

AB - While dental poly methyl methacrylate(PMMA) possesses distinctive qualities such as ease of fabrication, cost-effectiveness, and favorable physical and mechanical properties, these attributes alone are inadequate to impart the necessary impact strength and hardness. Consequently, pure PMMA is less suitable for dental applications. This research focused on the incorporation of Strontium titanate (SrTiO3-STO) and hybrid filler STO/Manganese oxide (MnO2) to improve impact resistance and hardness. The potential of STO in reinforcing PMMA is poorly investigated, while hybrid filler STO/MnO2 has not been presented yet. Differential scanning calorimetry is conducted in order to investigate the agglomeration influence on the PMMA glass transition temperature (Tg), as well as the leaching of residual monomer and volatile additives that could pose a threat to human health. It has been determined that agglomeration with 1 wt% loading had no influence on Tg, while the first scan revealed differences in evaporation of small molecules, in favor of composite PMMA-STO/MnO2, which showed the trapping potential of volatiles. Investigations of mechanical properties have revealed the significant influence of hybrid STO/MnO2 filler on microhardness and total absorbed impact energy, which were increased by 89.9% and 145.4%, respectively. Results presented in this study revealed the reinforcing potential of hybrid nanoparticles that could find application in other polymers as well.

AB - The occurrence and distribution of yttrium and rare earth elements (REYs), along with major elements and heavy metal(loid)s (HMs) in coal fly ash (CFA) from five coal-fired power plants (CFPPs), were analyzed, and the REY-associated ecological and health risks were assessed. The individual REYs in CFA were abundant in the following order: Ce > La > Nd > Y > Pr > Gd > Sm > Dy > Er > Yb > Eu > Ho > Tb > Tm > Lu. The total REY content ranged from 135 to 362 mg/kg, averaging 302 mg/kg. The mean light-to-heavy REY ratio was 4.1, indicating prevalent light REY enrichment in CFA. Significantly positive correlations between the REYs suggested that they coexist and share similar origins in CFA. REYs were estimated to pose low to moderate ecological risks, with risk index (RI) values ranging from 66 to 245. The hazard index (HI) and target cancer risk (TCR) of REYs from CFA, estimated to be higher for children (HIc = 0.15, TCRc = 8.4 × 10−16) than for adults (HIa = 0.017, TCRa = 3.6 × 10−16), were well below the safety limits (HI = 1, TCR = 1.0 × 10−6). However, the danger to human health posed by HMs in the same CFA samples (HIc = 5.74, TCRc = 2.6 × 10−4, TCRa = 1.1 × 10−4) exceeded the safe thresholds (excl. HIa = 0.63). The mean RI and HI attributed to REYs in CFA were 14% and 2.6%, respectively, of the total risks that include HMs.

AB - The interest in induced higher-order relational and multidimensional structures embedded in the financial complex dataset is considered within the applied algebraic topology framework. The aim is to transcend the binary correlations when the interactions of the underlying system are stored in the entries of the cross-correlation matrix. By applying different criteria, we examined aggregations of firms through higher-order clustering of the financial system. The outcome is the extraction of patterns that appear in assemblages of firms due to their multidimensional properties embedded in the cross-correlation matrices. Results are compatible with classifying firms into clusters due to the industry they belong to. Furthermore, the novel and mixed collections of firms are revealed based on the applied mathematical approach. In the broader context, results shed light on the higher-order organization of interactions embedded in the cross-correlation matrix and, as a consequence, extract patterns of collective behavior within a complex system.

AB - This paper presents a study and comparison of surface effects induced by picosecond and nanosecond laser modification of a Ti6Al4V alloy surface under different ambient conditions: air and argon- and nitrogen-rich atmospheres. Detailed surface characterization was performed for all experimental conditions. Damage threshold fluences for picosecond and nanosecond laser irradiation in all three ambient conditions were determined. The observed surface features were a resolidified pool of molten material, craters, hydrodynamic effects and parallel periodic surface structures. Laser-induced periodic surface structures are formed by multi-mode-beam nanosecond laser action and picosecond laser action. Crown-like structures at crater rims are specific features for picosecond Nd:YAG laser action in argon-rich ambient conditions. Elemental analysis of the surfaces indicated nitride compound formation only in the nitrogen-rich ambient conditions. The constituents of the formed plasma were also investigated. Exploring the impact of process control parameters on output responses has been undertaken within the context of laser modification under different environmental conditions. Parametric optimization of the nanosecond laser modification was carried out by implementing an advanced method based on Taguchi’s parametric design and multivariate statistical techniques, and optimal settings are proposed for each atmosphere.

AB - In this paper, various tensorial inequalities of trapezoid type were obtained. Identity from classical analysis is utilized to obtain the tensorial version of the said identity which in turn allowed us to obtain tensorial inequalities in Hilbert space. The continuous functions of self-adjoint operators in Hilbert spaces have several tensorial norm inequalities discovered in this study. The convexity features of the mapping f lead to the variation in several inequalities of the trapezoid type.

AB - This study addresses the oxidation behavior of Fe38Co38Mo8B15Cu1 alloy. Amorphous, melt-spun ribbons were heat treated in an oxygen atmosphere for different times at 350 °C, 550 °C, and 800 °C. We focus on the change in structural, thermal, and magnetic properties induced by oxygen treatment. The low-temperature heat-treated samples displayed broad, continuous, and low-intensity X-ray diffraction peaks. While no structural change was observed in the heat treatments at 350 °C both 30 min and 480 min, a significant oxide formation was observed in the heat treatment at 800 °C for 480 min. DTA/TG analysis demonstrates the weight gains and oxide formation with the temperature and time of heat treatment increase. The weight gain occurs rapidly for the sample treated for 480 min at 800 °C. A remarkable change in magnetic properties was observed. Bulk oxidation is seen by Mössbauer analysis in the heat treatment of alloy in air at 800 °C. Besides hematite, a defective CoFe2O4 phase emerged after 30 min, while after 480 min this phase was well-crystallized CoFe2O4.

AB - Background and Objectives: Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) has become the treatment of choice for advanced osteoarthritis. The aim of this paper was to show the possibilities of optimizing the Perth CT protocol, which is highly effective for preoperative planning and postoperative assessment of alignment. Materials and Methods: The cross-sectional study comprised 16 patients for preoperative planning or postoperative evaluation of TKA. All patients were examined with the standard and optimized Perth CT protocol using advance techniques, including automatic exposure control (AEC), iterative image reconstruction (IR), as well as a single-energy projection-based metal artifact reduction algorithm for eliminating prosthesis artifacts. The effective radiation dose (E) was determined based on the dose report. Imaging quality is determined according to subjective and objective (values of signal to noise ratio (SdNR) and figure of merit (FOM)) criteria. Results: The effective radiation dose with the optimized protocol was significantly lower compared to the standard protocol (p < 0.001), while in patients with the knee prosthesis, E increased significantly less with the optimized protocol compared to the standard protocol. No significant difference was observed in the subjective evaluation of image quality between protocols (p > 0.05). Analyzing the objective criteria for image quality optimized protocols resulted in lower SdNR values and higher FOM values. No significant difference of image quality was determined using the SdNR and FOM as per the specified protocols and parts of extremities, and for the presence of prothesis. Conclusions: Retrospecting the ALARA (‘As Low As Reasonably Achievable’) principles, it is possible to optimize the Perth CT protocol by reducing the kV and mAs values and by changing the collimation and increasing the pitch factor. Advanced IR techniques were used in both protocols, and AEC was used in the optimized protocol. The effective dose of radiation can be reduced five times, and the image quality will be satisfactory.

AB - The study of ablation and the laser-induced periodic surface structure (LIPSS) creation during the static and dynamic ultrafast laser (UFL) processing of the Al2O3/TiAlN protective coating is reported. The static irradiation was done with 10 successive pulses while scanning irradiation was performed with sample scanning. The laser ablation was studied by analysis of the surface morphology and elemental composition. The selective ablations manifest as circular craters or lines/micro-channels. The borders are very sharp without debris and hydrodynamic features. LIPSSs were formed at the bottoms of craters and microchannels. The periodicity of the created LIPSSs has shown a trend of increase with the pulse energy. Depending on the applied laser fuence the elemental composition in the centre of the craters confrmed the complete removal of the Al2O3 layer and partial ablation of the second TiAlN. The Al2O3 layer and part of TiAlN were ablated in micro-channels too.

AB - The unique resonance and locking phenomena in the superconductor-ferromagnet-superconductor φ0 Josephson junction under external electromagnetic radiation are demonstrated when not just the electric but also the magnetic component of external radiation is taken into account. Due to the coupling of superconductivity and magnetism in this system, the magnetic moment precession of the ferromagnetic layer caused by the magnetic component of external radiation can lock the Josephson oscillations, which results in the appearance of a particular type of step in the current-voltage characteristics, completely different from the well-known Shapiro steps. We call these steps the Buzdin steps in the case when the system is driven only by the magnetic component and the chimera steps in the case when both magnetic and electric components are present. Unlike the Shapiro steps where the magnetic moment remains constant along the step, here it changes though the system is locked. The spin-orbit coupling substantially contributes to the amplitude, i.e., the size of these steps. Dramatic changes in their amplitudes are also observed at frequencies near the ferromagnetic resonance. Combinations of the Josephson and Kittel ferromagnetic resonances together with different types of locking pronounced in dynamics and current-voltage characteristics make the physics of this system very interesting and open up a series of new applications.
