AB - Textile dye effluents and textile waste disposal represent two significant environmental challenges. Here, we present possible combined solution for both. Urea-derived graphitic carbon nitride g-C3N4 is thermally exfoliated to nano n-C3N4. Both obtained materials are characterized in detail, and their photocatalytic efficacies in photodegradation of three textile azo dyes under simulated solar light irradiation are compared. n-C3N4 exhibited superior performance over g-C3N4 under given experimental conditions. Novelty of the work is the subsequent usage of the non-woven jute post-industrial waste as a photocatalyst support. It was shown that NW jute impregnated with n-C3N4 can be successfully used in three consecutive photocatalytic cycles, keeping high photodegradation efficacy (~ 90% in the case of Acid Orange 7, and 55% in the case of Acid Blue 113). Additionally, possibility of usage of NW jute post-industrial waste as textile dye sorbent is presented in the case of Basic Yellow 28.

AB - Abstract: The municipality of Knjaževac represents an area with rich historical and cultural content favorable geographical location, tourist attractions, unique microclimate, and agricultural products. However, it is accompanied by numerous economic and environmental problems. This paper demonstrates
how certain problems can be solved or existing institutions and the commercial sector can be improved by applying new findings in photonics. It is shown how luminescence spectroscopy in librarianship can provide a precise analysis of the age of library materials and how lasers can successfully remove mold from old books. In agriculture, luminescence spectroscopy is demonstrated to determine the origin and quality of honey and wine, which are characteristic features of this region. Luminescent particles can achieve significantly higher yields of fruits, vegetables, and ornamental plants in greenhouses. Finally, hyperspectral cameras monitoring the luminescence of harmful gases show how industrial and landfill pollution levels can be tracked. This enables the implementation of specific measures aimed at improving human and animal health and preserving the environment.

AB - Raloxifene, a selective oestrogen receptor modulator (SERM), has demonstrated efficacy in the prevention and therapy of oestrogen receptor-positive (ER+) breast cancer, with some degree of effectiveness against triple-negative forms. This suggests the presence of oestrogen receptor-independent pathways in raloxifene-mediated anticancer activity. To enhance the potential of raloxifene against the most aggressive breast cancer cells, hybrid molecules combining the drug with a metal chelator moiety have been developed. In this study, we synthetically modified the structure of raloxifene by incorporating a 2,2′-bipyridine (2,2′-bipy) moiety, resulting in [6-methoxy-2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)benzo[b]thiophen-3-yl]-[4-(2,2′-bipyridin-4′-yl-methoxy)phenyl]methanone (bipyraloxifene). We investigated the cytotoxic activity of both raloxifene and bipyraloxifene against ER+ breast adenocarcinomas, glioblastomas, and a triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) cell line, elucidating their mode of action against TNBC. Bipyraloxifene maintained a mechanism based on caspase-mediated apoptosis but exhibited significantly higher activity and selectivity compared to the original drug, particularly evident in triple-negative stem-like MDA-MB-231 cells.

AB - This study provides insight into benefits of thermo-chemical conversion of coal slag as recovery process into value-added products. This research involves kinetic analysis of process conducted through non-isothermal thermal analysis measurements, with additional raw material characterization. Kinetic results showed that decomposition proceeds through two consecutive reactions steps (first one, including anorthite P1‾ → I1‾ phase transition, and then production of incongruent melting product (ternary system: CaO⋅Al2O3⋅2SiO2 (CAS2), where viscosity of slag changes), and second one including dehydration and formation of meta-muscovite, and subsequently, thermal disruption of muscovite de-hydroxylated phase, which proceeds with breaking of octahedral Al–O bonds), and one single-step reaction (attributed to CO-reduction of hematite to magnetite). Thermodynamic results showed an existence of physically meaningful isokinetic temperature (Tiso), which corresponds to active vibrational frequency of surroundings of SiO2 reaction site, manifested through Si‒O bond weakening by catalytic reaction of freed hydroxide ion (OH􀀀 ). It was concluded that at temperature T = Tiso, the course of process loses its dependence on temperature and pressure, regulating changes between thermodynamic parameters, through enthalpy-entropy compensation (EEC) effect.

AB - To broaden the applications of yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) in mobile phone back panels and high-end decorative materials, the 3 mol% YSZ (3YSZ) ceramics doped with erbium oxide (Er2O3) as colorant were successfully sintered at 1250 and 1350°C in air. The influences of Er2O3-doping concentration and sintering temperature on the phase, microstructure, color, and mechanical properties of the pink Er2O3-3YSZ ceramics were investigated. As the Er2O3 concentration increased, the redness value a* gradually increased, while the yellowness value b* and the lightness value L* gradually decreased. The highest value a* and b* of Er2O3-3YSZ ceramics reached absolute values of 15.2 and 4.5, respectively. The effect of Er2O3 concentration is also depicted in detail, which also affects the mechanical properties including hardness and fracture toughness of the ceramics. The maximum hardness and fracture toughness of Er2O3-3YSZ ceramics reached 13.9 ± 0.3 GPa and 6.21 ± 0.20 MPa·m1/2, respectively. The hardness of the ceramics exceeds 12.5 GPa, which is the required market index for further practical application. This work provides a method for preparing 3YSZ ceramics with excellent mechanical properties and bright pink color, which has the potential to be used in the fields of advanced and superior electronics in particular.

AB - We synthesized Eu3+-doped CsY2F7 and RbY2F7 nanoparticles (orthorhombic crystal structure, Pnna space group, No. 52) by the microwave-assisted solvothermal technique and investigated the influence of reaction temperature and fluoride ion concentration on the particles’ phase and crystal structure. Fluoride ions were added in excess of the stoichiometric amount to achieve the orthorhombic phase for CsY2F7 and to convert the cubic RbY3F10 to the orthorhombic RbY2F7. Mild synthesis conditions yielded nanoparticles with crystallites ranging in size from 19 to 37 nm and a combination of spherical, rod-like, and hexagonal shapes. Nanoparticles emit a strong orange and red light when excited into the Eu3+ 5L6 level, which is centered around 390 nm. The strongest emission peak is around 612 nm, which comes from the 5D0→7F2 electronic transitions. Emission intensity dependence on Eu3+ concentration revealed that nanoparticles can be heavily doped with Eu3+, up to 25 % with respect to Y3+. Emission decay measurements provided values of excited state lifetimes of 6.2 ms for the Cs(Y0.75Eu0.25)2F7 and 6.0 ms for the Rb(Y0.75Eu0.25)2F7.

AB - Herein, we demonstrate the photoluminescence properties of Dy3+-activated YNbO4, LuNbO4, and mixed YxLu1−xNbO4:Dy3+ (x=0.25, 0.5, 0.75) phosphors. For this purpose, fve samples with a fxed Dy3+ concentration (2 mol%) were prepared by the solid-state reaction method. X-ray difraction measurements showed that all phosphors crystallize in a monoclinic fergusonite-beta-(Y) structure with a C2/c space group. Scanning electron microscopy clearly shows that samples are composed of dense, well-developed micron-sized, cube-shaped grains with rounded edges. The photoluminescent emission spectra feature Dy3+ peaks at standard positions corresponding to transitions from the 4 F9/2 excited emitting level to the 6 HJ (J=15/2; 13/2; 11/2 and 9/2) lower levels with two dominant emission bands placed in the blue (~479 nm, B) and yellow (~576 nm, Y) spectral region. It is observed that with Lu increase in the host lattice Y/B ratio decreases toward the desired ratio of unity to obtain white light. To evaluate the suitability of these phosphors for use in solid-state lighting, their photoluminescence emission was analyzed in detail by calculating CIE coordinates, correlated color temperature (CCT) and Delta u,v (DUV). It is shown that CIE chromaticity coordinates of all Dy3+-activated YxLu1−xNbO4 samples (x=0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1) fall into the white portion of the diagram and that with the increase of Lu in the host lattice color becomes whiter. CCT values for all samples are in the cooler 4000–4500 K range with positive DUVs indicating that color points are placed above the black body curve. The average lifetime of 4 F9/2 level is calculated to be~0.2 ms for all Dy3+-activated YxLu1−xNbO4 samples, indicating that there is no infuence of the Y-to-Lu ratio in the host niobate material on the luminescence kinetics.

AB - The increasing popularity of luminescent nanothermometry in recent years can be attributed to its application potential in biomedicine. In response to this need, we describe a biocompatible bimodal luminescent thermometer that operates in ratiometric and luminescence lifetime modes based on particles of MgTiO3:Cr3+,Nd3+@SiO2. The introduction of Cr3+ and Nd3+ dopants enabled the luminescence of Ti3+ ions to be observed, and the difference in the thermal quenching rates of Cr3+ (4T2→4A2), Ti3+ (2T2→2E) and Nd3+ (4F3/2 → 4I11/2) ions enabled the ratiometric thermometers. The highest sensitivity reaching SR = 1.00%K−1 was obtained for MgTiO3:0.1 % Cr3+, 0.1 % Nd3+ at 203 K. The shortening of the lifetime of the 4T2 level of Cr3+ ions associated with its thermal depopulation allows to develop a lifetime-based thermometer with a relative sensitivity reaching 0.85–1.18%K−1 in the physiological temperature range. The deposition of a SiO2 shell on a MgTiO3:Cr3+,Nd3+ did not introduce significant changes in the shape of the emission spectrum and slightly elongates the lifetime by reducing the probability of surface-related nonradiative processes. More importantly, the thermometric performance of this luminescence thermometer was preserved. The low cytotoxicity of the obtained materials underlines their potential in bioapplications of the described luminescent thermometers.

AB - In this study we present a morphological and spectroscopical characterization of three different erbium doped nanocrystal samples, namely two oxides (Y2O3:3%Er, Sc2O3:3%Er) and one fluoride (YF3:5%Er). The spectroscopic study offers a comprehensive comparison of their multicolor emissions, ranging from the visible to the mid-infrared region. Emissions from the first five excited states are presented and the emission cross sections of the 4I11/2 → 4I15/2, 4I11/2 → 4I13/2, and 4I13/2 → 4I15/2 transitions have been calculated and compared with literature results for the oxide compounds providing a confirmation for the 1.5 emission of Er:Y2O3, a correction over published values for the 2.7 μm emission of Er:Y2O3, and also new results for the Er:Sc2O3 emission cross section values of all the infrared bands. Moreover, this study explores the application of the 4I13/2 emission for in-band luminescence thermometry within the third biological window. An optimized segmentation of the 1.5 μm emission permits to achieve high relative and absolute sensitivities using just one dopant ion.

AB - La(PO3)3 activated with different concentrations of Pr3+ was synthesized by a solid-state process. The obtained powder was composed of chunks of several microns in size, typical for this type of synthesis. X-ray diffraction confirmed an orthorhombic crystal structure with the C2221 space group. The electronic band structures and density of states of La(PO3)3 and La(PO3)3:Pr3+ are calculated and presented. The visible and near-infrared emissions from Pr3+ [Xe]4f2 [Xe]4f2 electronic transitions were detected under 442 nm excitation. The red emission from the 1D2 state dominates visible spectra while emissions from the 3P0,1,2 states have smaller intensities. The 1D2 emission centered around 1020 nm is detected in the near-infrared spectral range. Intensities of 3P0 emissions increased with an increase in Pr concentration, while 1D2 emissions decreased in intensity. We found that the main process responsible for the 1D2 state decay is the Pr(1D2) + Pr(3H4) Pr(1G4) + Pr(3F3,4) cross-relaxation between two Pr ions of electric dipole-dipole character. This finding is supported by 1D2 emission decay measurements, which revealed a reduction of average decay constants from 242 μs for a 0.5 mol% doped sample to 11 μs for a 10 mol% doped sample and an increasingly stronger non-exponential behavior of emission decay patterns with an increase in Pr3+ concentration.

AB - We considered the transparency of the electromagnetic pulse through superconducting quantum metamaterial comprised of an infinite chain of flux qubits embedded within the strip-line superconducting resonator. Due to the nonlocal interaction of EM radiation with "matter", pulse transparency exhibits substantial dependence of pulse transparency on carrier wave quasi-momentum. Predicted effects imply dispersionmanaged pulse transparency

AB - The TiO2-based interfacial charge transfer (ICT) complex with taxifolin (dihydroquercetin), a polyphenol with pronounced antioxidant ability, displays light absorption in the visible spectral range. The extent of the red absorption shift, obtained using the density functional theory (DFT) calculations on a cluster model that mimics the ICT complex, is in excellent agreement with spectroscopic measurements. The reactive paramagnetic species generated in the dispersed pristine and surface-modified TiO2 powders with taxifolin upon excitation with ultraviolet and visible light were identified by indirect electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy techniques. The spin trapping and spin scavenging revealed the differences between the behavior of the pristine and surface-modified TiO2 powders with taxifolin before and upon excitation. On one side, the TiO2-based ICT complex with taxifolin efficiently scavenges reactive oxygen species by the taxifolin’s hydroxyl groups and, on the other side, the promotion of electrons from the ground state of taxifolin to the conduction band of TiO2 takes place under visible light excitation.

AB - Source strength measurements are of critical importance for brachytherapy and are often performed in hospitals using well-type chambers. Quality assurance and quality control procedures should be implemented, but that may prove difficult in some hospitals due to the lack of equipment or metrological support. A study was conducted to investigate the status of the measurement equipment in Serbian hospitals and to organize an intercomparison campaign using a hospital 192Ir source. All the hospitals were able to measure the source strength with the required accuracy, but the quality assurance can be improved. Two hospitals performed stability checks, which were evaluated. Uncertainty budget was created during the exercise and is presented in this paper. The described methodology can be used to quickly assess the performance of brachytherapy centers, and can be easily adapted to calibration procedure.

AB - The Ti-45Nb (mass%) alloy’s corrosive and biocompatible response in simulated physiological conditions was investigated before and after its additional high-pressure torsion (HPT) and laser irradiation processing. The grain size reduction from 2.76 μm to ~ 200 nm and the appearance of laser-induced morphologically altered and highly oxidized surface led to the significant improvement of alloy corrosion resistance and cell–implant interaction. Moreover, an additional increase of the laser pulse energy from 5 to 15 mJ during the alloy irradiation in the air led to an increase in the surface oxygen content from 13.64 to 23.89% accompanied by an increase of excellent cell viability from 127.18 to 134.42%. As a result of the controlled alloy microstructural and surface modifications, the formation of protective bi-modal mixed Ti- and Nb-oxide external scale was enabled. The presence of this surface oxide scale enhanced the alloy’s resistance to corrosion deterioration and simultaneously boosted cell viability and proliferation.

AB - A high consumption of solid fats is linked to increased inflammation and a risk of cardiovascular diseases. Hence, in recent years, there has been increasing interest in the development of oleogels as a fat substitute in food products. Oleogels are edible gels that contain a large amount of liquid oils entrapped in a 3D network and that can potentially be applied to spreads, bakery goods, meat, and dairy products in order to lower their saturated fat content while maintaining a desirable food texture and mouthfeel. In this work, alginate cryogels were studied as templates for three different edible oils in the process of oleogel formation. Two different freezing regimes to obtain cryogels were employed in order to evaluate better the textural and morphological capabilities of cryogels to adsorb and retain edible oils. It was shown that rapid freezing in liquid nitrogen produces alginate cryogels with a lower density, higher porosity, and a greater ability to adsorb the tested oils. The highest uptake and holding oil capacity was achieved for olive oil, which reached a value of 792% and 82%, respectively. The best chewiness was found for an oleogel containing olive oil, whereas oleogels with the other two tested oils showed better springiness. Hence, the results presented in this work demonstrated that alginate-based cryogels can be effectively used as templates for oleogels and potentially find applications in the food industry.

AB - The surface modification of commercial TiO2 powder with catecholate-type ligand Tiron (TIR) leads to the formation of the interfacial charge transfer complex (ICT) absorbing in the visible spectral range. The estimated band gap energy of the ICT complex (Eg = 2.2 eV) by density functional theory (DFT) calculations agrees with experimental measurements. The surface-modified TiO2 with TIR has enhanced sorption capacity towards Pb2+ ions compared to the pristine one due to the presence of free sulfonate groups. Our attempt to reduce Pb2+ ions to metallic form failed. The TiO2-based ICT complex with TIR can serve as an efficient sorbent to remove Pb2+ ions from the solution without the ability to recover them in metallic form in a photo-driven catalytic process. The photocatalytic ability of the ICT complex to induce oxidation reactions is significantly improved since the complete degradation of organic dye methyl orange occurs under exclusive excitations with visible light photons.

AB - The interfacial charge transfer (ICT) complex formation is a simple procedure to bring optical absorption of widebandgap oxide materials in the visible spectral range, crucial for enhancing their use in photo-driven reactions. The optical absorption of the prepared ICT complexes between ZnO and five different colorless benzene derivatives is red-shifted compared to pristine ZnO nanopowder. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations provided realistic energy level alignment in hybrid systems. Also, the DFT-calculated infrared spectra support the binding structures derived based on experimental measurements of free and adsorbed ligands onto ZnO surfaces. The photocatalytic performance of prepared hybrids was evaluated using photocatalytic hydrogen generation in the water-splitting reaction. The ZnO nanopowders modified with catechol and caffeic acid have over 50% higher hydrogen production rate than pristine ZnO, displaying steady hydrogen production under long-run working conditions.

abstract = "The interfacial charge transfer (ICT) complex formation is a simple procedure to bring optical absorption of widebandgap oxide materials in the visible spectral range, crucial for enhancing their use in photo-driven reactions. The ZnO nanopowders modified with catechol and caffeic acid have over 50% higher hydrogen production rate than pristine ZnO, displaying steady hydrogen production under long-run working conditions.",

AB - Nanoparticles (NPs), a distinct class of particles ranging in size from 1 to 100 nm, are one of the most promising technologies of the 21st century, and titanium dioxide NPs (TiO2 NPs) are among the most widely produced and used NPs globally. The increased application of TiO2 NPs raises concerns regarding their global safety and risks of exposure. Many animal studies have reported the accumulation of TiO2 NPs in female reproductive organs; however, evidence of the resultant toxicity remains ambiguous. Since the surface area and chemical modifications of NPs can significantly change their cytotoxicity, we aimed to compare the toxic effects of pristine TiO2 powder with surface-modified TiO2 powders with salicylic acid (TiO2/SA) and 5-aminosalicylic acid (TiO2/5-ASA) on the ovaries, oviducts, and uterus on the 14th day following acute oral treatment. The results, based on alterations in food and water intake, body mass, organ-to-body mass ratio, hormonal status, histological features of tissues of interest, and antioxidant parameters, suggest that the modification with 5-ASA can mitigate some of the observed toxic effects of TiO2 powder and encourage future investigations to create NPs that can potentially reduce the harmful effects of TiO2 NPs while preserving their positive impacts.

AB - This paper presents a study and comparison of surface effects induced by picosecond and nanosecond laser modification of a Ti6Al4V alloy surface under different ambient conditions: air and argon- and nitrogen-rich atmospheres. Detailed surface characterization was performed for all experimental conditions. Damage threshold fluences for picosecond and nanosecond laser irradiation in all three ambient conditions were determined. The observed surface features were a resolidified pool of molten material, craters, hydrodynamic effects and parallel periodic surface structures. Laser-induced periodic surface structures are formed by multi-mode-beam nanosecond laser action and picosecond laser action. Crown-like structures at crater rims are specific features for picosecond Nd:YAG laser action in argon-rich ambient conditions. Elemental analysis of the surfaces indicated nitride compound formation only in the nitrogen-rich ambient conditions. The constituents of the formed plasma were also investigated. Exploring the impact of process control parameters on output responses has been undertaken within the context of laser modification under different environmental conditions. Parametric optimization of the nanosecond laser modification was carried out by implementing an advanced method based on Taguchi’s parametric design and multivariate statistical techniques, and optimal settings are proposed for each atmosphere.

AB - Toxic elements, lead, and copper are often found in wastewater discharged from industries such as mining. The discharge of untreated effluent poses severe environmental challenges and sorption methods using agricultural waste materials are proposed as an efficient and cost-effective solution. For this research, activated sunflower material (ASM) was prepared from abundantly available agricultural sunflower waste residues and utilised to remove Pb2+ and Cu2+ ions from an aqueous medium. To begin, we examine variables that may have an impact on the adsorption process, such as pH, contact time, adsorbent dose, and initial concentration using Box-Behnken Design (BBD) to find optimal conditions. Maximum removal efficiency was found at a pH of 5, contact time of 180 min, and initial concentration of 50 mg/L for Pb2+ and 150 mg/L for Cu2+. Additionally, adsorbent dose differed by element, for Cu2+ it was 200 mg, whilst for Pb2+ it was 124 mg. Features of activated carbon such as morphology, elemental composition, textural properties, and surface functionalities were characterised using SEM-EDS, BET, FTIR, and XPS. The adsorption equilibrium data were analysed by Langmuir, Freundlich, and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm models. It was found that the obtained results for Pb2+ adsorption were better described with the Freundlich isotherm model. Maximum adsorption capacities for Pb2+ and Cu2+ were 91.8 mg/g and 20.5 mg/g, respectively. Furthermore, kinetic studies confirmed that the adsorption process followed a pseudo-first-order kinetic model for Pb2+, but for Cu2+ all applied kinetic models fitted experimental data with the same values of the correlation coefficient (R2 = 0.99). After comprehensive analysis using the methods mentioned above, ASM was tested for the removal of Cu2+ from mining wastewater sample, and the obtained removal efficiency was 98.6% ± 2.0%. The results of desorption experiments conducted, confirm that ASM has good potential to be reused for the purpose of removing Cu2+ from wastewater.

AB - This study proposes a simple and controlled method for producing TiO2 with phase junction, oxygen vacancies, and Ti3+ by combining picosecond pulsed laser irradiation and electrochemical anodization. Ti mesh was pretreated by irradiating with a picosecond pulsed laser technique using an Nd:YAG laser (1064 nm) at two fluencies, 15 J/cm2 and 30 J/cm2 . The samples were then subjected to electrochemical anodization to form TiO2 nanotube arrays on the previously laser-treated surface. This study will investigate the possibility of forming TiO2 nanotube arrays on a pre-laser-treated Ti substrate and determine their physicochemical and photocatalytic properties. The samples were characterized by FESEM, XRD, Raman, XPS, and UV-Vis DRS. UV-Vis spectroscopy was used to observe the progress of photocatalytic degradation for all samples, and degradation products were determined using GC-MS. With the synergistic effects of phase junction, oxygen vacancies, and Ti3+, the laser-treated TiO2 with 30 J/cm2 showed a higher photocatalytic degradation rate (85.1%) of the pesticide carbofuran compared to non-laser-treated TiO2 (54.8%), remaining stable during successive degradation cycles, which has promising practical applications.

AB - The incombustible portion of coal that remains after burning is known as bottom or fly ash, and it has a detrimental influence on the environment. One of the possible alternatives for reducing the amount of ash deposited in landfills might be the production of useful glass–ceramic from vitrified fly ash. Glass–ceramic was synthesized using fly ash from the thermal power plant "Nikola Tesla" and fluxing additives. Sinter crystallization of the parent glass resulted in glass ceramics. The glass was created by melting a combination of coal fly ash (CFA), Na2CO3, and CaCO3 at T = 1500 °C and quenching the melt in the air. Glass powders were sintered at temperatures 850 and 900 °C. The resulting glass–ceramics were characterized microstructurally, physically, and mechanically. The cavitation erosion of samples was evaluated. The cavitation rate was 0.015 mg/min for the sample sintered at 850 °C and 0.0053 mg/min for the sample sintered at 900 °C. The leaching of heavy metals in glass–ceramic samples was determined using Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure. A low concentration of heavy metals in the leaching solution showed that heavy metals were successfully incorporated in the glass matrix and that obtained glass–ceramics are ecologically safe for usage. Both samples exhibit good resistance to cavitation erosion, suggesting their potential as possible replacements for structural ceramics commonly employed components of hydraulic machinery.

Both samples exhibit good resistance to cavitation erosion, suggesting their potential as possible replacements for structural ceramics commonly employed components of hydraulic machinery.",
