Unsaturated polyester resin based composites: A case study of lignin valorisation

AB  - Materials from green resources boast a low carbon footprint, forming the foundation of the circular economy approach in materials science. Thus, in this study, waste poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) was subjected to depolymerization using propylene glycol (PG), and subsequent polycondensation with bio-based maleic anhydride (MA) produced unsaturated polyester resin (b-UPR). Bio-derived acryloyl-modified Kraft lignin (KfL-A) served as a vinyl reactive filler in the b-UPR matrix to create b-UPR/KfL-A composites. The structural characterization of KfL-A and b-UPR involved the use of FTIR and NMR techniques. The mechanical properties of the newly fabricated composites were assessed through tensile strength, Vickers microhardness, and dynamic mechanical tests. The addition of KfL-A to the rigid b-UPR matrix enhanced material flexibility, resulting in less stiff and hard materials while preserving composite toughness. For instance, incorporating 10 wt.% of KfL-A in b-UPR led to a 17% reduction in hardness, a 48% decrease in tensile strength, and a 20% reduction in toughness. Positive environmental impact was achieved by incorporation of 64 wt.% of renewable and recycled raw material. Analogously prepared b-UPR/KfL composites showed structural inhomogeneity and somewhat better mechanical properties. Transmission (TEM) and scanning (SEM) electron microscopies revealed a suitable relationship between mechanical and structural properties of composites in relation to the extent of KfL-A addition. The UL94V flammability rating confirmed that flame resistance increased proportionally with the KfL-A addition. Once deposited in a landfill, these composites are expected to disintegrate more easily than PET, causing less harm to the environment and contributing to sustainability in the plastics cycle.

Alginate Cryogels as a Template for the Preparation of Edible Oleogels

AB  - A high consumption of solid fats is linked to increased inflammation and a risk of cardiovascular diseases. Hence, in recent years, there has been increasing interest in the development of oleogels as a fat substitute in food products. Oleogels are edible gels that contain a large amount of liquid oils entrapped in a 3D network and that can potentially be applied to spreads, bakery goods, meat, and dairy products in order to lower their saturated fat content while maintaining a desirable food texture and mouthfeel. In this work, alginate cryogels were studied as templates for three different edible oils in the process of oleogel formation. Two different freezing regimes to obtain cryogels were employed in order to evaluate better the textural and morphological capabilities of cryogels to adsorb and retain edible oils. It was shown that rapid freezing in liquid nitrogen produces alginate cryogels with a lower density, higher porosity, and a greater ability to adsorb the tested oils. The highest uptake and holding oil capacity was achieved for olive oil, which reached a value of 792% and 82%, respectively. The best chewiness was found for an oleogel containing olive oil, whereas oleogels with the other two tested oils showed better springiness. Hence, the results presented in this work demonstrated that alginate-based cryogels can be effectively used as templates for oleogels and potentially find applications in the food industry.

Influence of chitin nanofibers and gallic acid on physical-chemical and biological performances of chitosan-based films

AB  - In this work, chitosan films loaded with gallic acid and different content of chitin nanofibers were prepared and subjected to different characterization techniques. The results showed that the inclusion of gallic acid to chitosan films caused moderate decrease in water vapor permeability (by 29 %) and increased tensile strength of films (by 169 %) in comparison to the neat chitosan films. Furthermore, it was found that the addition of chitin nanofibers up to 30 % into chitosan/gallic acid films additionally improved tensile strength (by 474 %) and reduced plasticity of films (by 171 %), when compared to the chitosan/gallic acid films. Increased concentration of chitin nanofibers in films reduced the overall water vapor permeability of films by 51 %. In addition, gallic acid and chitin nanofibers had synergic effect on high chitosan film's antioxidant and antifungal activity toward Botrytis cinerea (both above 95 %). Finally, chitosan/gallic acid/chitin nanofibers films reduced decay incidence of strawberries, increased total soluble solid content, and promoted high production of some polyphenols during cold storage, in comparison to the control chitosan films and uncoated strawberry samples. Hence, these results suggest that chitosan/gallic acid/chitin nanofibers can present eco-sustainable approach for preservation of strawberries, giving them additional nutritional value.

Mn-Fe Layered Double Hydroxide Modified Cellulose-Based Membrane for Sustainable Anionic Pollutant Removal

AB  - This study aimed to investigate the adsorption of As(V), phosphate, and textile dye Acid Green 25 (AG-25) on layered double hydroxides Mn-Fe_LDH and corresponding membranes (wCell/Mn-Fe_LDH). The wCell membrane, derived from waste tobacco boxes, was formed by cross-linking of epoxy and amino modified cellulose fibers with epoxy modified Mn-Fe_LDH and lysine as cross-linker. Structural and morphological analyses were conducted for Mn-Fe_LDH and wCell/Mn-Fe_LDH. The batch system explored pH, contact time, temperature, and initial concentration effects on wCell/Mn-Fe_LDH adsorption efficiency. Adsorption capacities of 82.71, 106.9, and 130.3 mg g−1 were achieved for As(V), phosphate, and AG-25, respectively, indicating effective anionic species removal. Kinetic analysis suggested intraparticle diffusion as the rate-limiting step. Thermodynamic parameters and ionic strength effects indicated a physisorption mechanism for AG-25 and surface complexation for As(V) and phosphate. Biodegradation experiments after five adsorption/desorption cycles revealed the membrane’s decomposition, with phosphate’s strong bonding releasing essential elements valuable for soil fertilization. Effluent wastewater treatment demonstrated low environmental impact through the formation of insoluble As(V) salts and photocatalytic dye degradation.

The wCell membrane, derived from waste tobacco boxes, was formed by cross-linking of epoxy and amino modified cellulose fibers with epoxy modified Mn-Fe_LDH and lysine as cross-linker. Structural and morphological analyses were conducted for Mn-Fe_LDH and wCell/Mn-Fe_LDH. The batch system explored pH, contact time, temperature, and initial concentration effects on wCell/Mn-Fe_LDH adsorption efficiency. Adsorption capacities of 82.71, 106.9, and 130.3 mg g−1 were achieved for As(V), phosphate, and AG-25, respectively, indicating effective anionic species removal. Kinetic analysis suggested intraparticle diffusion as the rate-limiting step. Thermodynamic parameters and ionic strength effects indicated a physisorption mechanism for AG-25 and surface complexation for As(V) and phosphate. Biodegradation experiments after five adsorption/desorption cycles revealed the membrane’s decomposition, with phosphate’s strong bonding releasing essential elements valuable for soil fertilization. Effluent wastewater treatment demonstrated low environmental impact through the formation of insoluble As(V) salts and photocatalytic dye degradation.",

AB  - The increase in waste polymer recycling has helped in promoting sustainability, and together with the use of renewable raw materials, it has become a widespread concept with positive effects on both the economy and ecology. Accordingly, the aim of this study was the synthesis of “green” plasticizers, marked as LA/PG/PET/EG/LA, formed from waste poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and bio-based platform chemicals propylene glycol (PG) and levulinic acid (LA). The structure of the obtained plasticizers was complex, as confirmed by results from nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis. The LA/PG/PET/EG/LA plasticizers and waste poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) were used in an optimized technology for PVC re-granulate production. The hardness of the PVC-based material with “green” plasticizers, in comparison to commercial plasticizer dioctyl terephthalate (DOTP), increased by 11.3%, while migration decreased. An improved material homogeneity and wettability of the fibers by the matrix were observed using SEM analysis of the material’s fracture surface, with a higher efficiency of intermolecular interactions leading to better mechanical performances of the newly designed materials. Thus, LA/PG/PET/EG/LA are unique materials with good compounding and plasticizing potential for PVC, as revealed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). In that manner, the use of bio-renewable resources and recycled polymers will contribute to diminishing waste polymer generation, contributing to a lower carbon footprint.

AB  - Polimerne smole na bazi akrilata dobijene iz Bis-GMA (Bisfenol A glicidmetakrilat), koji je pogodan za fotopolimerizaciju, koriste se u stomatologiji za različite namene zbog lakoće nanošenja i mogućnosti da se utiče na njihova svojstva dodavanjem ojačanja različitog oblika i hemijskog sastava. Sintetisano je ojačanje u formi čestica na bazi dvostrukih slojevitih hidroksida magnezijuma i aluminijuma (MgAlLDH-Layered Double Hidroxides) nataloženih na silicijum dioksidu dobijenom iz ljuski pirinča. Kao podloge korišćene su metalna legura na bazi hroma i molibdena za primenu u stomatologiji i staklo u formi podloga za mikroskopske preparate. Adhezivna svojstva kompozita su bitna sa aspekta njihove primene. Adhezivna svojstva materijala su određena na osnovu merenja mikrotvrdoće kompozita i to primenom različitih opterećenja kako bi se procenio parametar adhezije koji pokazuje uticaj prevlake na podlogu. Upoređeno je kako se vezuje čista matrica od fotopolimerizujućeg akrilata sa podlogom od stomatološke legure sa vezivanjem za staklenu podlogu. Potom je upoređeno kako se vezuju kompozitni materijali na obe podloge. Adhezija je određena i na osnovu promene ugla kvašenja između kompozita i rezultati su upoređeni sa rezultatima mikroindentacije. Pokazalo se da dodatak kompozitnih čestica kao ojačanja u matricu od akrilata povećava adhezivna svojstva kompozita u odnosu na čistu matricu i da se ostvaruje bolja adhezija između kompozita i metalne podloge nego između kompozita i staklene podloge.
AB  - Polymer resins based on acrylates obtained from Bis-GMA (Bisphenol A glycide methacrylate), which is suitable for photopolymerization, are used in dentistry for various purposes due to the ease of application and the possibility to influence their properties by adding reinforcements of different shapes, crystal structure and chemical compositions. Reinforcement in the form of particles based on MgAlLDH (layered double hydroxide) deposited on silica obtained from rice husks on two substrates. A metal base and glass were used. The adhesive properties are important in order to see the possibility of using these materials in applications. In order to measure the adhesive properties of the material, the composite microhardness measurement method is used by applying different loads in order to evaluate the adhesion parameter that shows the effect of the coating on the substrate. It was compared to how a pure photopolymerizing acrylate matrix bonds with a chromium-based dental alloy substrate that is used in the production of different parts of dentures by bonding to a glass substrate. Then, it was compared how composite materials are bonded to both substrates. Adhesion was monitored through the change in wetting angle between the composites, and the results were compared with the results of microindentation. It was shown that the addition of composite particles increases the adhesive properties of the composite compared to the pure matrix and that better adhesion is achieved between the composite and the metal substrate than between the composite and the glass substrate.

Citric Acid Cross-Linked Gelatin-Based Composites with Improved Microhardness

AB  - The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of cross-linking and reinforcements in gelatin on the physico-mechanical properties of obtained composites. The gelatin-based composites cross-linked with citric acid (CA) were prepared: gelatin type B (GB) and β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) and novel hybrid composite GB with β-TCP and hydroxyapatite (HAp) particles, and their structure, thermal, and mechanical properties were compared with pure gelatin B samples. FTIR analysis revealed that no chemical interaction between the reinforcements and gelatin matrix was established during the processing of hybrid composites by the solution casting method, proving the particles had no influence on GB cross-linking. The morphological investigation of hybrid composites revealed that cross-linking with CA improved the dispersion of particles, which further led to an increase in mechanical performance. The microindentation test showed that the hardness value was increased by up to 449%, which shows the high potential of β-TCP and HAp particle reinforcement combined with CA as a cross-linking agent. Furthermore, the reduced modulus of elasticity was increased by up to 288%. Results of the MTT assay on L929 cells have revealed that the hybrid composite GB-TCP-HA-CA was not cytotoxic. These results showed that GB cross-linked with CA and reinforced with different calcium phosphates presents a valuable novel material with potential applications in dentistry.

Computational analyses identified a 25-amino-acid-long CDR2-NDP of Nb71, designated P4, which exhibited the following binding free-energy for the formation of the β2AR:P4 complex (ΔG = −6.8 ± 0.8 kcal/mol or a Ki = 16.5 μM at 310 K) and mapped the β2AR:P4 amino acid interaction network. In vitro characterization showed that P4 (i) can cross the plasma membrane, (ii) reduces the maximum isoproterenol-induced cAMP level by approximately 40% and the isoproterenol potency by up to 20-fold at micromolar concentration, (iii) has a very low affinity to interact with unstimulated β2AR in the cAMP assay, and (iv) cannot reduce the efficacy and potency of the isoproterenol-mediated β2AR/β-arrestin-2 interaction in the BRET2-based recruitment assay. In summary, the CDR2-NDP, P4, binds preferentially to agonist-activated β2AR and disrupts Gαs-mediated signaling.

In vitro characterization showed that P4 (i) can cross the plasma membrane, (ii) reduces the maximum isoproterenol-induced cAMP level by approximately 40% and the isoproterenol potency by up to 20-fold at micromolar concentration, (iii) has a very low affinity to interact with unstimulated β2AR in the cAMP assay, and (iv) cannot reduce the efficacy and potency of the isoproterenol-mediated β2AR/β-arrestin-2 interaction in the BRET2-based recruitment assay. In summary, the CDR2-NDP, P4, binds preferentially to agonist-activated β2AR and disrupts Gαs-mediated signaling.",

AB  - This study presents an analysis of films which consist of two layers; one layer is PVDF as the matrix, along with fillers BaTiO3 (BT), and the second is one bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) filled with Fe3O4. The mass fraction of BT in PVDF was 5%, and the samples were differentiated based on the duration of the mechanical activation of BT. This innovative PVDF laminate polymer with environmentally friendly fillers aligns with the concept of circular usage, resulting in a reduction in plastic content and potential improvement of the piezoelectric properties of the entire composite. This work presents new, multifunctional “green” packaging materials that potentially could be a good alternative to specific popular materials used for this purpose. The synthesis of the films was carried out using the hot press method. Tensile tests, water vapor permeability examination, and structural analyses using SEM-EDS and FTIR have been conducted. The sample PVDF/BT20/BNC/Fe3O4 exhibited the best barrier properties (impermeability to water vapor), while the highest tensile strength and toughness were exhibited by the PVDF/BT5/BNC/Fe3O4 sample.

AB  - Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a chronic, age-related, progressive multisystem disease associated with neuroinflammation and immune dysfunction. This review discusses the methodological approaches used to study the changes in central and peripheral immunity in PD, the advantages and limitations of the techniques, and their applicability to humans. Although a single animal model cannot replicate all pathological features of the human disease, neuroinflammation is present in most animal models of PD and plays a critical role in understanding the involvement of the immune system (IS) in the pathogenesis of PD. The IS and its interactions with different cell types in the central nervous system (CNS) play an important role in the pathogenesis of PD. Even though culture models do not fully reflect the complexity of disease progression, they are limited in their ability to mimic long-term effects and need validation through in vivo studies. They are an indispensable tool for understanding the interplay between the IS and the pathogenesis of this disease. Understanding the immune-mediated mechanisms may lead to potential therapeutic targets for the treatment of PD. We believe that the development of methodological guidelines for experiments with animal models and PD patients is crucial to ensure the validity and consistency of the results.

Copy number variation analysis identifies MIR9-3 and MIR1299 as novel miRNA candidate genes for CAKUT

AB  - Background Congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT) represent a frequent cause of pediatric kidney failure. CNVs, as a major class of genomic variations, can also affect miRNA regions. Common CNV corresponding miRNAs (cCNV-miRNAs) are functional variants regulating crucial processes which could affect urinary system development. Thus, we hypothesize that cCNV-miRNAs are associated with CAKUT occurrence and its expressivity.  Methods The extraction and filtering of common CNVs, identified in control samples deposited in publicly available databases gnomAD v2.1 and dbVar, were coupled with mapping of miRNA sequences using UCSC Genome Browser. After verification of the mapped miRNAs using referent miRBase V22.1, prioritization of cCNV-miRNA candidates has been performed using bioinformatic annotation and literature research. Genotyping of miRNA gene copy numbers for MIR9-3, MIR511, and MIR1299, was conducted on 221 CAKUT patients and 192 controls using TaqMan™ technology.  Results We observed significantly different MIR9-3 and MIR1299 gene copy number distribution between CAKUT patients and controls (Chi-square, P = 0.006 and P = 0.0002, respectively), while difference of MIR511 copy number distribution showed nominal significance (Chi-square, P = 0.027). The counts of less and more than two of MIR1299 copy numbers were more frequent within CAKUT patients compared to controls (P = 0.01 and P = 0.008, respectively) and also in cohort of patients with anomalies of the urinary tract compared to controls (P = 0.016 and P = 0.003, respectively).  Conclusions Copy number variations of miRNA genes represent a novel avenue in clarification of the inheritance complexity in CAKUT and provide potential evidence about the association of common genetic variation with CAKUT phenotypes.

AB  - The consistent expansion of the lithium-ion battery (LIB) market, coupled with their relatively brief lifespan, necessitates the development of efficient and sustainable LIB recycling strategies. Recycling is crucial not only for the recovery of critical metals like Co(II) and Li(I) from the cathode material as a secondary resource but also from an environmental perspective. This study explores the use of a series of aqueous biphasic systems (ABS) with synthesized tetrabutylphosphonium ionic liquids (ILs) and ammonium sulfate as extraction platforms for metals from LIB cathode. Firstly, liquid–liquid equilibrium phase diagrams for each ABS were established, and partitioning experiments were conducted to assess the Co(II), Ni(II), Mn(II), and Li(I) recovery efficiencies. We observed distinct partitioning behaviors for the metals, with tetrabutylphosphonium diethylenetriaminepentaacetate, [TBP][DTPA], showing recovery efficiencies exceeding 98% for Co(II), Ni(II), and Mn(II). At the same time, Li(I) was predominantly retained in the aqueous salt-rich phase. By fine-tuning ABS operational parameters such as pH, temperature, system composition, and phase ratio, we identified optimal conditions for extracting metals from the cathode material of lithium-cobalt-oxide (LCO) batteries using sulfate lixiviate. Introducing [TBP][DTPA] after the leaching process induced ABS, achieving remarkable recovery efficiency over 95% for Co(II) in the IL-rich phase, with all Li(I) remaining in the lower phase. Cobalt was subsequently extracted using oxalic acid to precipitate as Co-oxalate from concentrate, while Li(I) was isolated from the aqueous phase using ammonium carbonate. After the “cleaning” of the IL-rich phase, the [TBP][DTPA] was recovered and reused in four consecutive cycles, with small detected losses on the recovery efficiency of Co(II) and Li(I). Therefore, our innovative strategy combines sulfate-based lixiviants with IL-ABS technology, thereby enhancing selectivity and sustainability within one of the most efficient lixiviant systems widely employed in the industry. This technological advancement presents a promising pathway for the recycling of spent batteries, offering substantial environmental advantages within the well-established and extensively utilized realm of metal recovery technology in the industry.

Impact of lockdown on air quality in Belgrade during COVID-19 pandemic

AB  - The Environmental Protection Agency of the Republic of Serbia continuously monitors and collects air quality parameters at numerous measuring points throughout the country. The results revealed that the levels of air pollution recorded during the lockdown differed from those recorded during the same period the previous years. In this paper, we examined pollutant concentration trends in 2020 and a few previous years to determine the underlying causes of these trends. Pollutants are measured at five stations in Belgrade from the beginning of March to the end of July between 2015 and 2020. Because no hourly data were available, NO2, SO2, and suspended particles PM10 and PM2.5 are average daily values, whereas CO and ozone are daily 8-hour maximums. Concentrations were compared and averaged only when data for the same period over time was available, i.e. when comparing 2020 to previous years. The results were compared to the annual and daily limit values (for ozone and CO 8 hours maximum, respectively), as well as the variations in concentrations over time. The goal of calculating and displaying these values is to specifically identify a change in air pollution during the COVID-19 virus pandemic isolation period. In general, for Belgrade in 2020, NO2 concentrations are lower at four stations, PM2.5 concentrations are lower at two stations, PM10 concentrations are higher at one station and lower at another, and SO2 concentrations are higher than in previous years (2015-2019).

AB  - Thermo-chemical conversion of cigarette butt filters (CBF) waste was investigated using various thermal analysis techniques (simultaneous TG-DTG-DTA and DSC methods) at different heating rates in an inert atmosphere. Thermo- and thermo-physical properties of waste material were discussed, from the point of view of chemical structure and the influence of experimental parameters on the conversion process. It was established that acetyl groups of plasticizer (triacetin) interact with cellulose acetate through dipolar interactions and hydrogen bonding’s. Influence of these polar interactions can affect the position of glass transition temperature, Tg, of CBF. Based on estimated value of Tg from DSC analysis, it was found that cellulose acetate present in CBF has degree of substitution equals to 2.8, where the presence of cellulose triacetate was confirmed. It was assumed that an increase of degree of substitution leads to decline in the crystallinity. A decline of crystal-linity causes the reduction of hydroxyl groups, leading to less organized chains, and whereby decreasing of inter-molecular interactions through hydrogen bond-ing. Based on the examination of thermophysical characteristics of the tested ma-terial, it was found that both, the heat capacity and the thermal inertia of material linearly increase with temperature, during pyrolysis progression. It was concluded that the type of bio-char produced in this process would have a large capacity to store the heat, which may depend on the formed particles size diameter and poros-ity. Furthermore, it was inferred that magnitude drops of thermal conductivity, κ, after Tg depends on the material fibrillation

AB  - Quality control and assurance of mammography X-ray generators include usage of solid-state detectors and/or ionization chambers which are calibrated in standard reference radiation fields. IEC 61267:2005 standard defines reference mammography radiation fields for Mo/Mo anode/filtration, while various anode/filtration combinations are encountered in clinical mammography X-ray units. Not all Secondary Standard Dosimetry Laboratories have an X-ray generator with Mo/Mo radiation setup, thus traceability can be established only for the available anode/filter combinations which is commonly limited to W/Al. In this study, W/Al radiation fields were established under laboratory conditions by performing half-value layer measurements, and characterization of four solid-state detectors was performed. X-ray multimeter performance was evaluated in terms of energy response in the W/Al radiation fields. In the laboratory conditions the energy response of the dosimeters had larger deviation from unity for dosimeters without appropriate anode/filter combination selected in the software settings, even though most of the dosimeters had uniform relative response. Discrepancy in the response was further investigated by examining its variation induced by available detector software settings, and it was determined that the dosimeter response can vary up to 20 %. In clinical setup, half-value layer was determined, and detector performance was examined. Dosimeters were tested in clinical fields with Mo/Mo, Mo/Rh, W/Rh, W/Ag anode/filter combinations in the X-ray tube voltage range from 25 kV to 35 kV. For most clinical radiation fields, multi-element detectors had energy response deviation within ±5 %. The single-element detector had one software setting available and has exhibited strong energy dependence. Extensive testing of detector response such as presented in this paper allows for correction factor interpolation based on half-value layer.

AB  - The increasing incidence rate of pancreatic cancer worldwide, along with high resistance to existing chemotherapies and radiotherapy, demand new approaches for its treatment. Nanoparticle-guided cancer treatment modalities are promising in their anti-cancer efficiency and upgrading potential. We have synthesized and characterized Gd-doped titanium-dioxide nanoparticles (Gd-TiO 2 NPs), which showed good biocompatibility with MIA PaCa-2 and PANC-1 pancreatic cancer cell lines. To assess the effect that these NPs have on tumor cells, we used synchrotron radiation Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and principal component analysis. We elucidated the biochemical changes in the two cell lines induced after their interaction with these NPs. Results demonstrated changes in nucleic acids and carbohydrate metabolism and alterations in the protein conformation in both cell lines. In addition, considerable changes in lipid area were observed in PANC-1 cell line, suggesting that Gd-TiO 2 NPs have a prospective to be further studied as systems for pancreatic cancer treatment.

AB  - Here, we present the results of the synthesis, surface modification, and properties analysis of magnetite-based nanoparticles, specifically Co0.047Fe2.953O4 (S1) and Co0.086Fe2.914O4 (S2). These nanoparticles were synthesized using the co-precipitation method at 80 ◦C for 2 h. They exhibit a single-phase nature and crystallize in a spinel-type structure (space group Fd3m). Transmission electron microscopy analysis reveals that the particles are quasi-spherical in shape and approximately 11 nm in size. An observed increase in saturation magnetization, coercivity, remanence, and blocking temperature in S2 compared to S1 can be attributed to an increase in magnetocrystalline anisotropy due to the incorporation of Co ions in the crystal lattice of the parent compound (Fe3O4). The heating efficiency of the samples was determined by fitting the Box-Lucas equation to the acquired temperature curves. The calculated Specific Loss Power (SLP) values were 46 W/g and 23 W/g (under HAC = 200 Oe and f = 252 kHz) for S1 and S2, respectively. Additionally, sample S1 was coated with citric acid (Co0.047Fe2.953O4@CA) and poly(acrylic acid) (Co0.047Fe2.953O4@PAA) to obtain stable colloids for further tests for magnetic hyperthermia applications in cancer therapy. Fits of the Box-Lucas equation provided SLP values of 21 W/g and 34 W/g for CA- and PAA-coated samples, respectively. On the other hand, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis points to the catalytically active centers Fe2+/Fe3+ and Co2+/Co3+ on the particle surface, suggesting possible applications of the samples as heterogeneous self-heating catalysts in advanced oxidation processes under an AC magnetic field.

Additionally, sample S1 was coated with citric acid (Co0.047Fe2.953O4@CA) and poly(acrylic acid) (Co0.047Fe2.953O4@PAA) to obtain stable colloids for further tests for magnetic hyperthermia applications in cancer therapy. Fits of the Box-Lucas equation provided SLP values of 21 W/g and 34 W/g for CA- and PAA-coated samples, respectively. On the other hand, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis points to the catalytically active centers Fe2+/Fe3+ and Co2+/Co3+ on the particle surface, suggesting possible applications of the samples as heterogeneous self-heating catalysts in advanced oxidation processes under an AC magnetic field.",

AB  - Background The majority of CAKUT-associated CNVs overlap at least one miRNA gene, thus affecting the cellular levels of the corresponding miRNA. We aimed to investigate the potency of restitution of CNV-affected miRNA levels to remediate the dysregulated expression of target genes involved in kidney physiology and development in vitro.  Methods Heterozygous MIR484 knockout HEK293 and homozygous MIR185 knockout HEK293 cell lines were used as models depicting the deletion of the frequently affected miRNA genes by CAKUT-associated CNVs. After treatment with the corresponding miRNA mimics, the levels of the target genes have been compared to the non-targeting control treatment. For both investigated miRNAs, MDM2 and PKD1 were evaluated as common targets, while additional 3 genes were investigated as targets of each individual miRNA (NOTCH3, FIS1 and APAF1 as hsa-miR-484 targets and RHOA, ATF6 and CDC42 as hsa-miR-185-5p targets).  Results Restitution of the corresponding miRNA levels in both knockout cell lines has induced a change in the mRNA levels of certain candidate target genes, thus confirming the potential to alleviate the CNV effect on miRNA expression. Intriguingly, HEK293 WT treatment with investigated miRNA mimics has triggered a more pronounced effect, thus suggesting the importance of miRNA interplay in different genomic contexts.  Conclusions Dysregulation of multiple mRNA targets mediated by CNV-affected miRNAs could represent the underlying mechanism behind the unresolved CAKUT occurrence and phenotypic variability observed in CAKUT patients. Characterizing miRNAs located in CNVs and their potential to become molecular targets could eventually help in understanding and improving the management of CAKUT.

AB  - While dental poly methyl methacrylate(PMMA) possesses distinctive qualities such as ease of fabrication, cost-effectiveness, and favorable physical and mechanical properties, these attributes alone are inadequate to impart the necessary impact strength and hardness. Consequently, pure PMMA is less suitable for dental applications. This research focused on the incorporation of Strontium titanate (SrTiO3-STO) and hybrid filler STO/Manganese oxide (MnO2) to improve impact resistance and hardness. The potential of STO in reinforcing PMMA is poorly investigated, while hybrid filler STO/MnO2 has not been presented yet. Differential scanning calorimetry is conducted in order to investigate the agglomeration influence on the PMMA glass transition temperature (Tg), as well as the leaching of residual monomer and volatile additives that could pose a threat to human health. It has been determined that agglomeration with 1 wt% loading had no influence on Tg, while the first scan revealed differences in evaporation of small molecules, in favor of composite PMMA-STO/MnO2, which showed the trapping potential of volatiles. Investigations of mechanical properties have revealed the significant influence of hybrid STO/MnO2 filler on microhardness and total absorbed impact energy, which were increased by 89.9% and 145.4%, respectively. Results presented in this study revealed the reinforcing potential of hybrid nanoparticles that could find application in other polymers as well.

AB  - Porous anorthite (CaAl2Si2O8) ceramics, suitable for thermal insulation in buildings, were obtained using waste seashells as a source of CaO, kaolin as a source of Al2O3 and SiO2 and banana peel as a pore former. Changing the volume of banana peel as well as the processing temperature was found to be an effective approach to control the thermo-mechanical properties of the obtained anorthite ceramics. The sintering of powder compacts containing up to 30 wt% banana peel at temperatures ranging from 1100 to 1200 °C resulted in anorthite ceramics possessing up to 45% open porosity, a compressive strength between 13 and 92 MPa, a bulk density between 1.87 and 2.62 g/cm3 and thermal conductivity between 0.097 and 3.5 W/mK. It was shown that waste materials such as seashells and banana peel can be used to obtain cost-effective thermal insulation in buildings.

AB  - Hafnium carbide (HfC) is a refractory compound known for its exceptional mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties. This compound has gained significant attention in materials science and engineering due to its high melting point, extreme hardness, and excellent thermal stability. This study presents crystal structure prediction via energy landscape explorations of pristine hafnium carbide supplemented by data mining. Apart from the well-known equilibrium rock salt phase, we predict eight new polymorphs of HfC. The predicted HfC phases appear in the energy landscape with known structure types such as the WC type, NiAs type, 5-5 type, sphalerite (ZnS) type, TlI type, and CsCl type; in addition, we predict two new structure types denoted as ortho_HfC and HfC_polytype, respectively. Moreover, we have investigated the structural characteristics and mechanical properties of hafnium carbide at the DFT level of computation, which opens diverse applications in various technological domains.

AB  - In this paper we use a modification of the Newtonian gravitational potential with a non-linear Yukawa-like correction, as it was proposed by C. Will earlier to obtain new bounds on graviton mass from the observed orbits of S-stars around the Galactic Center (GC). This phenomenological potential differs from the gravitational potential obtained in the weak field limit of Yukawa gravity, which we used in our previous studies. We also assumed that the orbital precession of S-stars is close to the prediction of General Relativity (GR) for Schwarzschild precession, but with a possible small discrepancy from it. This assumption is motivated by the fact that the GRAVITY Collaboration in 2020 and in 2022 detected Schwarzschild precession in the S2 star orbit around the Supermassive Black Hole (SMBH) at the GC. Using this approach, we were able to constrain parameter 𝜆  of the potential and, assuming that it represents the graviton Compton wavelength, we also found the corresponding upper bound of graviton mass. The obtained results were then compared with our previous estimates, as well as with the estimates of other authors.

AB  - This study explores the use of a series of cholinium ionic liquids (ILs) or salts in combination with polypropylene glycol 400 to form aqueous biphasic systems (ABS) for extracting various polarity pesticides (dicamba, clomazone, pyraclostrobin, and deltamethrin) from water. We assessed five cholinium-based salting-out agents ([Ch][DHP], [Ch]Cl, [Ch][Ac], [Ch][Lac], and [Ch][Nic]), chosen for their structural diversity and unique properties, such as high salting-out potential and different ability to undergo specific interactions. Liquid-liquid equilibrium phase diagrams were established, and partition experiments were conducted to evaluate extraction efficiency. Different partition patterns were obtained for studied pesticides, with [Ch][DHP] demonstrating the highest efficiency exceeding 90 % for each target pesticide due to its strong salting-out ability. On the other hand, more diverse partition trends due to specific interactions were obtained for low-melting cholinium-ILs ABS. The effect of pH and temperature on the partitioning behavior in [Ch][Ac]-based ABS highlighted the cholinium ILs extraction system's customizable nature. Focusing on [Ch]Cl for its eco-friendly aspects, widespread availability and excellent extraction performance, we optimized parameters for the removal of pesticides from real samples, applying the technology to spiked agricultural wastewater with an extraction efficiency of over 99 %. Our findings demonstrate the potential of cholinium-based IL-ABS in reducing environmental pollution through efficient pesticide extraction.
