Diurnal, Temporal and Spatial Variations of Main Air Pollutants Before and during Emergency Lockdown in the City of Novi Sad (Serbia)

AB  - Changes in air pollution in the region of the city of Novi Sad due to the COVID-19 induced state of emergency were evaluated while using data from permanently operating air quality monitoring stations belonging to the national, regional, and local networks, as well as ad hoc deployed low-cost particulate matter (PM) sensors. The low-cost sensors were collocated with reference gravimetric pumps. The starting idea for this research was to determine if and to what extent a massive change of anthropogenic activities introduced by lockdown could be observed in main air pollutants levels. An analysis of the data showed that fine and coarse particulate matter, as well as SO2 levels, did not change noticeably, compared to the pre-lockdown period. Isolated larger peaks in PM pollution were traced back to the Aralkum Desert episode. The reduced movement of vehicles and reduced industrial and construction activities during the lockdown in Novi Sad led to a reduction and a more uniform profile of the PM2.5 levels during the period between morning and afternoon air pollution peak, approximately during typical working hours. Daily profiles of NO2, NO, and NOX during the state of emergency proved lower levels during most hours of the day, due to restrictions on vehicular movement. CO during the state of the emergency mainly exhibited a lower level during night. Pollutants having transportation-dominated source profiles exhibited a decrease in level, while pollutants with domestic heating source profiles mostly exhibited a constant level. Considering local sources in Novi Sad, slight to moderate air quality improvement was observed after the lockdown as compared with days before. Furthermore, PM low-cost sensors’ usefulness in air quality assessment was confirmed, as they increase spatial resolution, but it is necessary to calibrate them at the deployment location.

Percolation theory applied in modelling of Fe2O3 reduction during chemical looping combustion

AB  - The study presents a new modelling approach applied to hematite to magnetite reduction, which is the dominant reaction in atmospheres with a high CO2/CO ratio, expected in chemical looping combustion. The structure of the Fe2O3 particle was simulated using the percolation theory, while the reduction was modelled using the stochastic approach to simulate nucleation, gaseous diffusion, solid-state diffusion, and chemical reaction. To account for differences between 3-D and 2-D pores, the model allowed for pore-hopping. The obtained results agreed with experimental results for Fe2O3 derived from natural ore (pyrite), and, to a lesser extent, with results for lab-synthesised Fe2O3 particles. The model provides useful insight into the complexity of the investigated process. For materials with undeveloped porosity, a simple shrinking-core approximation will be sufficient. In contrast, for materials with well-developed porosity, the models should incorporate information about the particle structure. © 2020 Elsevier B.V.

Influence of Cr doping on the structural, magnetic, optical and photocatalytic properties of α-Fe2O3 nanorods

AB  - Pure and Cr-doped hematite (α-(Fe1-xCrx)2O3, x = 0, 0.026, 0.039, 0.085 or 0.135) nanorods were prepared by a simple co-precipitation and calcination method. Influence of different levels of Cr doping on the change of properties of long and thin pure hematite nanorods was investigated. Cr3+-for-Fe3+ substitution in the crystal structure of hematite was proved by measuring a gradual contraction of the unit cell and a gradual decrease of the hyperfine magnetic field by increasing the Cr molar fraction. Cr doping induced an increase in the width and thickness of hematite nanorods, as well as a decrease in the overall surface area. Low temperature 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy showed that the Morin transition in hematite was suppressed by Cr doping to temperatures below 80 K. Magnetic measurements confirmed the suppression of the Morin transition in Cr-doped hematite down to 5 K. Infrared spectra of Cr-doped hematite samples showed shifts of IR bands by Cr3+-for-Fe3+ substitution. Optical properties of α-Fe2O3 nanorods changed significantly by Cr doping – the absorption edge was shifted to higher wavelengths, accompanied by a greater absorption in the visible range and narrowed direct and indirect optical band gaps. The improved visible light photocatalytic activity of hematite nanorods in the heterogeneous photo-Fenton process by moderate Cr doping was measured, which can be attributed to the modifications in electronic structure and optical properties. © 2020 Elsevier Ltd

AB  - Measurements of the second Fourier harmonic coefficient (v2) of the azimuthal distributions of prompt and nonprompt D$^{0}$ mesons produced in pp and pPb collisions are presented. Nonprompt D$^{0}$ mesons come from beauty hadron decays. The data samples are collected by the CMS experiment at nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energies of 13 and 8.16 TeV, respectively. In high multiplicity pp collisions, v2 signals for prompt charm hadrons are reported for the first time, and are found to be comparable to those for light-flavor hadron species over a transverse momentum (pT) range of 2–6 GeV. Compared at similar event multiplicities, the prompt D$^{0}$ meson v2 values in pp and pPb collisions are similar in magnitude. The v2 values for open beauty hadrons are extracted for the first time via nonprompt D$^{0}$ mesons in pPb collisions. For pT in the range of 2–5 GeV, the results suggest that v2 for nonprompt D$^{0}$ mesons is smaller than that for prompt D$^{0}$ mesons. These new measurements indicate a positive charm hadron v2 in pp collisions and suggest a mass dependence in v2 between charm and beauty hadrons in the pPb system. These results provide insights into the origin of heavy-flavor quark collectivity in small systems.

PVDF-HFP/NKBT composite dielectrics: Perovskite particles induce the appearance of an additional dielectric relaxation process in ferroelectric polymer matrix

AB  - Na0.25K0.25Bi0.5TiO3 (NKBT) perovskite particles are synthesized by solid-state method and used as a filler for polyvinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-HFP) co-polymer. X-ray diffraction analysis of NKBT powders shows that the particles have a rhombohedral perovskite crystal structure (R3c symmetry). Raman spectroscopy reveals that the co-polymer crystallizes predominantly into the mixture of polar β- and γ-crystals, while there is also a contribution of the non-polar α-crystal phase. The introduction of the NKBT into the PVDF-HFP results with an increase in effective dielectric permittivity and this effect depends on the inorganic content in the composite. The most interesting result of the present study is that the introduction of NKBT particles induces the appearance of an additional transition peak in the dielectric spectra of the co-polymer matrix. At the fixed frequency of ~2 kHz, the observed process appears at ~10 °C (about 45° above the glass transition temperature) and its magnitude strongly depends on the amount of the NKBT in the composite. Dielectric spectroscopy measurements of the composites are carried out in the wide range of frequencies (from 0.1 Hz to 1 MHz) and temperatures (from −100 to 100 °C). They reveal that the novel process can be clearly distinguished in the frequency range between 160 Hz and ~50 kHz. © 2021 The Authors

Strawberry (Fragaria ananassa duch.) Alba extract attenuates DNA damage in lymphocytes of patients with Alzheimer’s disease

AB  - Increased levels of oxidative stress and oxidative DNA damage are common features in the pathology of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) found in neurons and peripheral cells like peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL). Natural products such as strawberry cultivar Alba are an important source of bioactive nutrients that could help in lowering both the oxidative stress and DNA damage levels. The objective was to estimate the effects of Alba extract on DNA damage in peripheral blood lymphocytes of sporadic AD (aged 60–84 years) patients, and healthy elderly (aged 69–83 years) and young (aged 21–30 years) individuals in in vitro conditions. Comet assay was used as a sensitive technique for the evaluation of PBL DNA damage levels. Reduction of basal DNA damage level in PBL was shown in the young group after the incubation with Alba extract ranging from 25 to 200 μg/ml, with 100 μg/ml being the most effective concentration. Selected Alba extract of 100 μg/ml was further used for PBL treatment of AD and healthy elderly age matched group, displaying potential to significantly attenuate DNA damage levels in both groups (p <.05). Alba extract displayed biological activity against oxidative DNA damage, suggesting that its functional ingredients may have beneficial health effects. Practical applications: The data obtained in this preliminary study displayed that strawberry Alba extract is efficient against DNA damage induced by endogenous and exogenous oxidative stress in peripheral blood lymphocytes of Alzheimer`s disease in vitro. An active area of future research of Alba cultivar should be to determine the trials in in vivo systems. Our findings also suggest that Alba cultivar’s functional ingredients potentially may have beneficial health effects in AD. © 2021 Wiley Periodicals LLC.

AB  - This paper provides an overview of the characteristics of different neural networks trained on the same theoretical database of n-type silicon photoacoustic signals. By adding different levels of random Gaussian noise to the training input signals, two important goals were achieved. First, the optimal level of noise was found which significantly shortens the training networks with minimal loss of accuracy of its predictions. Second, the termination criteria of networks training were activated to avoid overtraining, i.e., networks generalization was performed. A networks efficiency analysis was performed on both theoretical and experimental photoacoustic signals, resulting in a selection of one neural network that is optimal to the performance requirements of the real experiment. AB  - Advanced efficient energy conversion technology using clean alternative fuel contributes to the alleviation of the energy crisis and environmental deterioration. In this situation, a novel methanol utilization technology for power generation based on hybrid fuel cell system is proposed in this work. The hybrid system consists of a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC), a gas processing unit (GP) and a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). Thermodynamic analysis of the system shows that the energy conversion efficiency and exergy efficiency are both higher than the previously reported standalone or hybrid energy systems using methanol as fuel, which are 66.2% and 54.2% respectively. Besides, no recirculation ratio of anode off-gas and moderate fuel utilization of about 0.5 are suggested for the SOFC component to balance the power distribution and improve the efficiency. Afterwards, this hybrid fuel cell system is also investigated from thermo-economic and techno-economic perspectives. Take Northwest China as a case, the 1 MWe methanol-fed power plant has a specific electric energy cost of 0.5594 CNY/kWh, much lower than the methanol steam reforming-PEMFC power plant (2.4 CNY/kWh). At the same time, the sensitivity analyses reveal that the cost of the hybrid power system is not sensitive to the market price fluctuation. With financial subsidies for existing renewable power plants, the payback period can be shortened to 1.4 year and the annual return on investment is about 3.58%. These results reveal that this two-stage fuel cell hybrid system is a kind of efficient and economically methanol to power conversion technology, especially for small power scale. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd

Guiding of protons through radially deformed triple-wall carbon nanotubes

Specifically, we chose a proton energy of 1 GeV and perfect and the radially deformed TWNTs (15, 0)@(10, 0)@(5, 0) of radial strengths η= 0.1 , 0.2 and 0.3. We presented the channeling potential within the perfect and deformed TWNTs and corresponding spatial and angular distributions of channeled protons. We treated the problem relativistically. We also analyzed the case where proton beams enter nanotube under different incidence angles. We analyzed two cases L= 1 and 5 μm. We also varied the value of incidence angle of proton beam and calculated the efficiency of nanotube channeling. This is the first time that we presented spatial and angular distributions of channeled protons with radially deformed TWNTs with angular effect of proton beam, and also, for the first time we presented their channeling efficiency. Our results show that the spatial and angular distributions depend strongly on the nanotube lengths, incident angle of the proton beam, and on the level of radial deformation of nanotube. Multi-wall nanotubes (MWNTs) are better candidates for realization of ion guiding than single-wall nanotubes (SWNTs) because it is easier to produce them straight. Also, deformation of the nanotube and the incident proton beam under some initial angle with respect to the nanotube axes represent realistic situation. That is why we believe that these results may be useful for production and guiding of nanosized ion beams by nanotubes. In this study, nanochitosan dots (nChiD) produced by gamma irradiation have been encapsulated in bacterial cellulose (BC) polymer matrix to study the antibacterial potentials of these nanocomposites and their possible usage in wound healing treatment (scratch assay). Detailed analyses show that nChiDs have disc-like shape and average diameter in the range of 40 to 60 nm depending of the applied dose. All nChiDs as well as BC-nChiD nanocomposites emit green photoluminescence independently on the excitation wavelengths. The new designed nanocomposites do not have a cytotoxic effect; antioxidant analysis shows their moderate radical scavenging activity whereas antibacterial properties show significant growth inhibition of strains mostly found in difficult-to-heal wounds. The obtained results confirm that new designed BC-nChiD nanocomposites might be potential agent in wound healing treatment. © 2021 Elsevier B.V.

AB  - Graphene is an excellent material to anchor metal nanoparticles due to its large surface area. In this paper, we report the use of electrochemically exfoliated graphene as support to anchor gold nanoparticles (Au NPs). Au NPs are synthesized via the reduction of chloroauric acid under gamma irradiation at low doses of 1, 5, and 10 kGy and directly deposited onto the graphene surface, making this procedure simple and fast. Good water dispersibility of exfoliated graphene, due to the presence of oxygen-containing functional groups in the structure of graphene, provides long-term stability of Au NPs - graphene composite dispersions. The majority of the Au NPs obtained by this method have sizes of up to 40 nm, while the increase in the applied dose leads to an increase in the amount of smaller nanoparticles. The increase of temperature of the prepared composite material upon irradiation with an 808 nm continuous wave laser was monitored. All samples show a temperature increase between 21.5 and 25.6 °C for 10 min of the laser exposure, which indicates that Au NPs - graphene composite can effectively be used in photothermal treatment for cancer therapy. © 2021 Elsevier Inc.

The HNT/epoxy nanocomposite materials were prepared by mixing different ratios of untreated/treated HNT with neat epoxy resin. Characterization of untreated/treated HNT was performed by Fourier-transformation infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The quantity of grafted molecules and thermal stability of newly synthesized materials were determined by thermogravimetric (TG) and derivative thermogravimetric (DTG) analysis. Tensile properties of newly synthesized materials were compared, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis of the fracture surfaces were performed. Incorporation of APTES modified HNT (HNTAPT) and two-step modification APTES followed by DGEBA (HNTAPTDG) has increased the tensile strength of the nanocomposite materials up to 72% and 61%, and strain at break up to 1082% and 1216%, respectively, compared to neat epoxy. It was concluded that the modification of HNT contributed to the enhancement of the dispersion and the cross-linking in the epoxy resin matrix. © 2021 Society of Plastics Engineers

AB  - The effect of gamma radiation on the reliable measurement of single voltage pulses of electron beam injectors into plasma during fusion experiments is considered in the manuscript. For this purpose, a 10 GHz fast voltage divider was constructed. The high-voltage capacitor was a gas condenser, and the low-voltage capacitor was a parallel connection of 10 mica capacitors. It turned out that the received radiation dose corrects the transmission ratio since it aligns the frequency characteristic of the mica in the area of spatial charge. This phenomenon has been explained from both a positive and a negative aspect with an effect on the concrete application. The need for further research on this problem was also pointed out to establish a saturation dose and thus obtain a constant frequency characteristic of the mica. The interest in the fast-divider behavior in the neutron field is also highlighted. © 2020 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

The worldwide increase in the use of psychotropic drugs, their long-term use on a daily basis, common comorbidities of psychiatric and metabolic disorders, and polypharmacy in psychiatric patients increase the incidence of psychotropics-induced DILI. During the last 2 decades, hepatotoxicity of various antidepressants (ADs) and antipsychotics (APs) received much attention. Comprehensive review and discussion of accumulated literature data concerning this issue are performed in this study, as hepatotoxic effects of most commonly prescribed ADs and APs are classified, described, and discussed. The review focuses on ADs and APs characterized by the risk of causing liver damage and highlights the ones found to cause life-threatening or severe DILI cases. In parallel, an overview of hepatic oxidative stress, inflammation, and steatosis underlying DILI is provided, followed by extensive review and discussion of the pathophysiology of AD- and AP-induced DILI revealed in case reports, and animal and in vitro studies. The consequences of some ADs and APs ability to affect drug-metabolizing enzymes and therefore provoke drug–drug interactions are also addressed. Continuous collecting of data on drugs, mechanisms, and risk factors for DILI, as well as critical data reviewing, is crucial for easier DILI diagnosis and more efficient risk assessment of AD- and AP-induced DILI. Higher awareness of ADs and APs hepatotoxicity is the prerequisite for their safe use and optimal dosing. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH, DE part of Springer Nature.

AB  - Nano-crystallite Lanthanum oxysulfide (La2O2S), a versatile compound with a wide range of applications, has been synthesized by the Solid State, Hydrothermal, and a novel Furnace Combustion technique. The last one limits the precursors, thus minimizing the resource usage, does not require passing of the H2S, CS2, or any of the hazardous gasses during the reaction and is less time-consuming while providing the maximum yield output. Thus, the novel Furnace Combustion method is marked for potential industrial use. The comparative XRD analysis showed the highest phase purity of the samples created by the Furnace Combustion technique, which was then employed for the synthesis of 1% Ln3+:La2O2S (Ln = Pr, Eu, Tb, Dy, Er) samples. The crystallite size was estimated by the Scherrer equation. The EDAX spectra proved the successful incorporation of doped elements. The samples showed absorption peaks in the UV region attributed to the excitation into 4f5d for Pr3+ and Tb3+, charge-transfer state for Eu3+, host absorption for Dy3+ and 4f levels for Er3+ doped samples. The emission spectra showed 4f - 4f transitions typical for the doped rare-earth ions. The bandgap energies are estimated by the Tauc plot. The 4.95 eV band-gap of pristine La2O2S is significantly dropped by doping. The refractive index values slightly increased by doping with rare-earth ions from 2.00 for the pure sample to ca. 2.20 for the doped samples. © 2020 Elsevier B.V.

AB  - Severe plastic deformation (SPD) is a popular group of techniques applied to achieve the nanostructuring of the metallic biomaterials and improvement of their mechanical characteristics. One of the most commonly used SPD methods is the high-pressure torsion (HPT) technique which enables the obtainment of the microstructure with small grains and high strength. In the present study, the influence of the plastic deformation and surface modification treatment on the tensile and corrosion properties of the Ti–13Nb–13Zr (wt%) alloy is investigated. In that purpose, the coarse-grained (CG) Ti–13Nb–13Zr (TNZ) alloy was subjected to the HPT processing by applying a pressure of 4.1 GPa with a rotational speed of 0.2 rpm and 5 revolutions at room temperature to obtain the ultrafine-grained (UFG) microstructure. The alloy microstructure before and after HPT processing was analysed using the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the X-ray diffraction (XRD). The homogeneity of the UFG TNZ alloy was determined by microhardness testing and microscopic observations. The nanotubular oxide layer on the surface of the TNZ alloy, both in CG and UFG condition, was formed by electrochemical anodization in 1 M H3PO4 + NaF electrolyte for 90 min. SEM analysis was used to characterise the morphology of the anodized surfaces, while energy dispersive spectroscopy was applied to determine the chemical composition of the nanostructured layers formed at the alloy surfaces. Mechanical properties of the TNZ alloy, before and after HPT processing and electrochemical anodization, were determined by tensile testing. After tensile testing, the fractographic analysis was conducted to identify the fracture mechanisms. The potentiodynamic polarization technique was used to determine the corrosion resistance of the alloy before and after plastic deformation and surface modification treatment. The obtained results showed that the alloy is reasonably homogeneous after the HPT processing. The XRD analyses reviled the presence of α′ and β phases in the CG TNZ alloy microstructure, while the additional ω phase was detected in the microstructure of the UFG TNZ alloy. The HPT obtained alloy exhibits higher hardness and improved tensile properties than the alloy in the as-received CG condition, while the electrochemical anodization leads to a decrease of its mechanical properties. Both CG and UFG alloys show excellent corrosion stability in Ringer’s solution. Moreover, electrochemical anodization leads to a decrease or an increase of the corrosion resistance of these materials, depending on the morphology of the formed nanotubular surface layers. The results indicate that the anodized CG TNZ alloy is characterized by a lower modulus of elasticity and better corrosion resistance properties than the anodized UFG TNZ alloy. High-performance laminate material based on polyurethane and epoxide reinforced by silica particles from rice husk used for intelligent pedestrian crossings

AB  - Intelligent pedestrian crossings were made with the aim to increase pedestrian safety at poorly lit locations. New technologies include the design of polymer materials that have high performance by optimizing properties such as compression, tensile and impact strengths, wear resistance, hardness and transparency. The desired properties are set up to face the demands of a heavy daily traffic load and enable the functionality. Laminate material consists of the epoxy composite reinforced with silica (SiO2) derived from rice husk waste and a protective thermoplastic polyurethane layer. The top layer of the laminate material is a transparent thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) serving as a protective layer with high wear resistance and good adhesion with epoxy composite. Silica obtained from rice husk waste was used in reinforcing of the epoxide in order to improve the mechanical properties, diffuse the light, improve the adhesion with TPU and decrease the production costs. Micro-Vickers hardness of the epoxy composite was increased by 70% with the addition of 15 wt% of SiO2. Impact energy of the epoxy composite with 15 wt% of SiO2 was increased by 272.9% after adding the TPU layer. Compressive strength of the epoxy resin is improved by 16.2% by reinforcement with 15 wt% of SiO2, while the laminate composite material showed 207% higher compressive strength than the commonly used asphalt pavement. Moreover, the addition of 15 wt% of SiO2 improved the adhesion between epoxy composite and TPU layer (11.2%). Thus, obtained laminated material made of the epoxy composite with 15 wt% of SiO2 (obtained from rice husk waste) and TPU598 showed mechanical properties and LED light transmission/diffusion appropriate for application in the intelligent pedestrian crossings. © 2021, Iran Polymer and Petrochemical Institute.

AB  - Aflatoxins are natural mycotoxins that mainly occur in areas with humid climates. One of the methods for the successful elimination of aflatoxins is gamma radiation treatment. In this paper, gamma radiation's influence on the content of aflatoxins in hemp flour and microbiological properties (total number of microorganisms, molds, and potentially pathogenic bacteria) and nutritional values were investigated. The artificial radioactive isotope of cobalt Co-60, with a dose rate of 10 kGy/hr, was used as the radiation source. Using high-performance liquid chromatography, we determined that a dose of 4 kGy was sufficient to eliminate aflatoxins below the acceptable value. An irradiation dose of 8 kGy was sufficient to eliminate the total number of microorganisms and molds. Also, a treatment of 3 kGy is enough to remove all bacteria. Finally, it was shown that gamma irradiation does not affect the nutritional value of the product. Novelty Impact Statement: Hemp flour is rich in healthy fats, magnesium, fiber, and protein. However, it may be contaminated with aflatoxins, microorganisms, molds, and potentially pathogenic bacteria. Gamma irradiation is an effective method of food preservation that guarantees food decontamination and protection of nutrients. In this paper, an adequate dose of gamma radiation to preserve hemp flour has been established. © 2021 Wiley Periodicals LLC.

AB  - Particles of beech wood were treated with hot water at the temperature of 150oC, during 60 min, prior to the pelleting process. The applied hot water pretreatment affected the chemical composition and heating value of particles. Two groups of pellets, designated as PT 10 and PT 20, were produced from treated beech particles, with the moisture content of particles being 10.5 and 20.5 %, respectively. Pellets from nontreated beech particles (PNT) served as controls to assess the hot water pretreatment effects on the pellet properties. Both, the applied pretreatment, and the particle moisture content, affected properties of the obtained pellets. The heating value of PT 10 ad PT 20 pellets has increased for ~6 and 1 %, respectively. The mineral (ash) content in treated pellets decreased for about 24 % in comparison to that in PNT pellets. In addition, the bulk (apparent) density of pellets has increased for 21 % (PT 10) and 10 % (PT 20), as a consequence of the hot water pretreatment of particles. The specific density of PT 10 pellets was for 16 % higher, while the equilibrium moisture content (after conditioning at RH 68 % and 20.1oC) was for about 32 % lower in comparison to the respective properties of PNT pellets.

AB  - The UV-B represents the minor fraction of the solar spectrum, while UV-C is not contained in natural solar radiation, but both radiation types can cause damaging effects in plants. Cell walls (CWs) are one of the targets for external stressors. Juvenile P. omorika trees were treated either with 21 day-high doses UV-B or with 7 day- UV-C in open-top chambers. Using spectroscopic and biochemical techniques, it was shown that the response to UV radiation includes numerous modifications in needle CW structure: relative content of xylan, xyloglucan, lignin and cellulose decreased; cellulose crystallinity changed; yield of lignin monomers with stronger connection of C[dbnd]C in side chain with the ring increased; re-distribution of inter- and intra-polymer H-bonds occurred. The recovery was mediated by an increase in the activities and changes in isoform profiles of CW bound covalent peroxidases (POD) and polyphenol oxidases (PO) (UV–B), and ionic POD and covalent PO (UV–C). A connection between activities of specific POD/PO isoforms and phenolic species (m- and p-coumaric acid, pinoresinol and cinnamic acid derivatives) was demonstrated, and supported by changes in the sRNA profile. In vivo fluorometry showed phenolics accumulation in needle epidermal CWs. These results imply transversal connections between polymers and changed mechanical properties of needle CW as a response to UV. The CW alterations enabled maintenance of physiological functions, as indicated by the preserved chlorophyll content and/or organization. The current study provides evidence that in conifers, needle CW response to both UV-B and UV-C includes biochemical modifications and structural remodeling. © 2021 Elsevier Masson SAS

AB  - Additive-free boron carbide (B4C) – silicon carbide (SiC) ceramic composites with different B4C and β-SiC powders ratio were densified using the high-pressure “anvil-type with hollows” apparatus at 1500 °C under a pressure of 4 GPa for 60 s in air. The effect of starting powders ratio on the composites sintering behavior, relative density, microstructural development, and thermomechanical properties was studied. The sintered samples hardness was found to be in the range from 24 to 31 GPa. The thermal conductivity measurements, conducted in the temperature range from room temperature to 1000 °C, showed that the thermal diffusivity of sintered samples was between 6 and 9.5 mm2/s whereas the thermal conductivity was in the range from 16 to 28 W/(m K). The results of this study show that the high-pressure sintering can be a very effective low-temperature densification method for the obtainment of additive-free B4C - β-SiC ceramic composites. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd

The change of the adsorbent surface before and after dye removal was observed using the Fourier Transformation-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The adsorption kinetics is in accordance with the pseudo-second-order kinetics model. The Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm models were used to describe the adsorption process.
