Chemically heterogeneous carbon dots enhanced cholesterol detection by MALDI TOF mass spectrometry

AB  - A binary system composed of carbon dots (CDs) and N-doped CDs (N-CDs) embedded in an organic matrix was used for the analysis of cholesterol by MALDI (matrix-assisted laser desorption and ionization time-of-flight) mass spectrometry, as a model for detection of small, biologically relevant molecules. The results showed that both CDs are sensitive to the cholesterol and can be used either alone or in a binary system with 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid (DHB) to enhance the detection process. It was found that both COOH and NH2 groups on CDs surface contributed to the enhancement in the cholesterol detection by MALDI mass spectrometry in the presence of inorganic cations. Nevertheless, in the presence of NaCl, N-CDs led to a better reproducibility of results. It was due to the coexistence of positive and negative charge on N-CDs surface that led to a homogeneous analyte/substrate distribution, which is an important detection parameter. The enhancing effect of carbon dots was linked to a negative Gibbs energy of the complex formation between CDs, Na+, cholesterol and DHB, and it was supported by theoretical calculations. Moreover, upon the addition of CDs/N-CDs, such features as a low ionization potential, vertical excitation, dipole moment and oscillator strength positively affected the cholesterol detection by MALDI in the presence of Na+. © 2021 Elsevier Inc.

AB  - Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a promising cancer treatment that can be implemented using various agents. The conventional photosensitizer Al (III) phthalocyanine chloride tetrasulfonic acid (Pc) has limitations of selectivity in tumor targeting, low affinity to cancer cells, and low two-photon absorption. This study presents a novel photosensitizer FA-TiO2-Pc, which has the TiO2 nanoparticle conjugated with a tumor targeting agent of folic acid (FA), and Pc. FA-TiO2-Pc possessed high targeted photodynamic therapeutic activity and excellent biocompatibility. This promising photosensitizer showed high therapeutic drug efficiency in vitro at a low concentration dose and short incubation time under one-photon excitation (OPE). In vivo, when treated with a low dose of FA-TiO2-Pc and low light irradiation, the tumor growth was depressed in mice bearing HeLa xenograft tumors with minimal side effects. In addition, the two-photon absorption of FA-TiO2-Pc was also enhanced compared to Pc, proving that FA-TiO2-Pc system has a great potential to be used for the therapy of the folate receptor positive cancer cells in both OPE-PDT and two-photon excitation (TPE)-PDT agents. © 2020 Elsevier B.V.

AB  - Chemoresistance remains the major challenge for successful treatment of acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Although recent mouse studies suggest that treatment response of genetically and immunophenotypically indistinguishable AML can be influenced by their different cells of origin, corresponding evidence in human disease is still largely lacking. By combining prospective disease modeling using highly purified human hematopoietic stem or progenitor cells with retrospective deconvolution study of leukemia stem cells (LSCs) from primary patient samples, we identified human hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) and common myeloid progenitors (CMPs) as two distinctive origins of human AML driven by Mixed Lineage Leukemia (MLL) gene fusions (MLL-AML). Despite LSCs from either MLL-rearranged HSCs or MLL-rearranged CMPs having a mature CD34 −/lo /CD38 + immunophenotype in both a humanized mouse model and primary patient samples, the resulting AML cells exhibited contrasting responses to chemotherapy. HSC-derived MLL-AML was highly resistant to chemotherapy and expressed elevated amounts of the multispecific anion transporter ABCC3. Inhibition of ABCC3 by shRNA-mediated knockdown or with small-molecule inhibitor fidaxomicin, currently used for diarrhea associated with Clostridium difficile infection, effectively resensitized HSC-derived MLL-AML toward standard chemotherapeutic drugs. This study not only functionally established two distinctive origins of human LSCs for MLL-AML and their role in mediating chemoresistance but also identified a potential therapeutic avenue for stem cell–associated treatment resistance by repurposing a well-tolerated antidiarrhea drug already used in the clinic.

Bactericidal and antioxidant bacterial cellulose hydrogels doped with chitosan as potential urinary tract infection biomedical agent

AB  - Therapy of bacterial urinary tract infections (UTIs) and catheter associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) is still a great challenge because of the resistance of bacteria to nowadays used antibiotics and encrustation of catheters. Bacterial cellulose (BC) as a biocompatible material with a high porosity allows incorporation of different materials in its three dimensional network structure. In this work a low molecular weight chitosan (Chi) polymer is incorporated in BC with different concentrations. Different characterization techniques are used to investigate structural and optical properties of these composites. Radical scavenging activity test shows moderate antioxidant activity of these biocompatible composites whereasin vitrorelease test shows that 13.3% of chitosan is released after 72 h. Antibacterial testing of BC-Chi composites conducted on Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria causing UTIs and CAUTIs (Escherichia coli,Pseudomonas aeruginosa,Klebsiella pneumoniae) and encrustation (Proteus mirabilis) show bactericidal effect. The morphology analysis of bacteria after the application of BC-Chi shows that they are flattened with a rough surface, with a tendency to agglomerate and with decreased length and width. All obtained results show that BC-Chi composites might be considered as potential biomedical agents in treatment of UTIs and CAUTIs and as a urinary catheter coating in encrustation prevention.

abstract = "Therapy of bacterial urinary tract infections (UTIs) and catheter associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) is still a great challenge because of the resistance of bacteria to nowadays used antibiotics and encrustation of catheters. Bacterial cellulose (BC) as a biocompatible material with a high porosity allows incorporation of different materials in its three dimensional network structure. In this work a low molecular weight chitosan (Chi) polymer is incorporated in BC with different concentrations. Different characterization techniques are used to investigate structural and optical properties of these composites. Radical scavenging activity test shows moderate antioxidant activity of these biocompatible composites whereasin vitrorelease test shows that 13.3% of chitosan is released after 72 h. Antibacterial testing of BC-Chi composites conducted on Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria causing UTIs and CAUTIs (Escherichia coli,Pseudomonas aeruginosa,Klebsiella pneumoniae) and encrustation (Proteus mirabilis) show bactericidal effect. The morphology analysis of bacteria after the application of BC-Chi shows that they are flattened with a rough surface, with a tendency to agglomerate and with decreased length and width. All obtained results show that BC-Chi composites might be considered as potential biomedical agents in treatment of UTIs and CAUTIs and as a urinary catheter coating in encrustation prevention.",

Its efficiency depends on a large number of physical parameters associated with resonant elements comprising the metasurface and is thus notoriously difficult to optimize. Here we formulate a theoretical model for evaluating the diffraction efficiency of an array of lossy resonant elements whose spectral response is dominated by the coupling between a leaky eigenmode and a single incoming/outgoing channel. We use it to deduce a formula for the maximum attainable diffraction efficiency and the gradient parameter profile for which it is achieved. The optimization procedure is demonstrated on the example of an electrically tunable liquid-crystal terahertz beam steering metasurface. AB  - This paper provides in-depth knowledge about the evolved gas analysis interpretation via newly proposed semi-quantitative approach, arising from thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) – mass spectrometry (MS) coupled measurements, for studying pyrolysis behavior of three kinds of biomass waste materials (spent coffee grounds, beech sawdust and wheat straw). TGA – MS coupling allows accurate correlation between molecular ion peak and fragment peaks to the corresponding mass loss rates from derivative thermogravimetry curves. Within proposed semi-quantitative analysis, MS spectra were interpreted through the comparative analysis of compounds fragments and of the compound itself, where the single atomic mass unit was identified by multiple compounds exhibition. It was shown that by this procedure which involves overlapping multiple curves supervising, the identification of gases in volatiles complex scheme becomes more simplified. By setting up semi-quantitative formulas, easy and reliable calculations of gaseous products yield and syngas energy capacities are possible to achieve. The H2/CO ratio derived from the proposed method for wood waste product (sawdust) is in an excellent agreement with H2/CO ratio for sawdust syngas production, in fuel reactor for biomass gasification and H2 production. © 2021 Elsevier B.V.

AB  - The hydrolytic stability of two nano-SiO2-based UF composites with derivates of coumarin (names as K-1 and K-2) was investigated. K-1 is 3-nitro-4-(p-tolylamino)-2H-chromen-2-one and K-2: 4-((3-nitro-2-oxo-2H-chromen-4-yl)amino)benzenesulfonamide. Two types of nano-silica-based urea–formaldehyde (UF), composite materials with a formaldehyde-to-urea (F/U) ratio of 0.8, were synthesized (UF/K-1/SiO2, and UF/K-2/SiO2). The hydrolytic stability of modified UF composite was determined by measuring the mass loss and liberated formaldehyde concentration of modified UF composite after acid hydrolysis. Obtained results showed that the hydrolytic stability of modified resins with derivates of coumarin was enhanced. The formaldehyde emission of modified UF/K-1/SiO2 composite is lower compared with UF/K-2/SiO2 composite. The thermal behavior of materials was studied by non-isothermal thermo-gravimetric analysis and differential thermal gravimetry supported by data from ATR-IR spectroscopy. The shift of temperature values for selected mass losses (T5%) to a high temperature indicates the increase in thermal stability of samples based on UF resin modified with K-2. © 2020, Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature.

AB  - Drug-induced liver injury (DILI) is a serious health burden. It has diverse clinical presentations that can escalate to acute liver failure. The worldwide increase in the use of psychotropic drugs, their long-term use on a daily basis, common comorbidities of psychiatric and metabolic disorders, and polypharmacy in psychiatric patients increase the incidence of psychotropics-induced DILI. During the last 2 decades, hepatotoxicity of various antidepressants (ADs) and antipsychotics (APs) received much attention. Comprehensive review and discussion of accumulated literature data concerning this issue are performed in this study, as hepatotoxic effects of most commonly prescribed ADs and APs are classified, described, and discussed. The review focuses on ADs and APs characterized by the risk of causing liver damage and highlights the ones found to cause life-threatening or severe DILI cases. In parallel, an overview of hepatic oxidative stress, inflammation, and steatosis underlying DILI is provided, followed by extensive review and discussion of the pathophysiology of AD- and AP-induced DILI revealed in case reports, and animal and in vitro studies. The consequences of some ADs and APs ability to affect drug-metabolizing enzymes and therefore provoke drug–drug interactions are also addressed. Continuous collecting of data on drugs, mechanisms, and risk factors for DILI, as well as critical data reviewing, is crucial for easier DILI diagnosis and more efficient risk assessment of AD- and AP-induced DILI. Higher awareness of ADs and APs hepatotoxicity is the prerequisite for their safe use and optimal dosing. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH, DE part of Springer Nature.

Mechanochemical modification of LiAlH4 with Fe2O3 - A combined DFT and experimental study

AB  - LiAlH4 is a promising material for hydrogen storage, having the theoretical gravimetric density of 10.6 wt% H2. In order to decrease the temperature where hydrogen is released, we investigated the catalytic influence of Fe2O3 on LiAlH4 dehydrogenation, as a model case for understanding the effects transition oxide additives have in the catalysis process. Quick mechanochemical synthesis of LiAlH4 + 5 wt% Fe2O3 led to the significant decrease of the hydrogen desorption temperature, and desorption of over 7 wt%H2 in the temperature range 143–154 °C. Density functional theory (DFT)-based calculations with Tran-Blaha modified Becke-Johnson functional (TBmBJ) address the electronic structure of LiAlH4 and Li3AlH6. 57Fe Mössbauer study shows the change in the oxidational state of iron during hydrogen desorption, while the 1H NMR study reveals the presence of paramagnetic species that affect relaxation. The electron transfer from hydrides is discussed as the proposed mechanism of destabilization of LiAlH4 + 5 wt% Fe2O3. © 2021 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC

AB  - Advanced biogas power generation technology has been attracting attentions, which contributes to the waste disposal and the mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions. This work proposes and models a novel biogas-fed hybrid power generation system consisting of solid oxide fuel cell, water gas shift reaction, thermal swing adsorption and proton exchange membrane fuel cell (SOFC-WGS-TSA-PEMFC). The thermodynamic, exergetic, and thermo-economic analyses of this hybrid system for power generation were conducted to comprehensively evaluate its performance. It was found that the novel biogas-fed hybrid system has a gross energy conversion efficiency of 68.63% and exergy efficiency of 65.36%, indicating high efficiency for this kind of hybrid power technology. The market sensitivity analysis showed that the hybrid system also has a low sensitivity to market price fluctuation. Under the current subsidy level for the distributed biogas power plant, the levelized cost of energy can be lowered to 0.02942 $/kWh for a 1 MW scale system. Accordingly, the payback period and annual return on investment can reach 1.4 year and about 20%, respectively. These results reveal that the proposed hybrid system is promising and economically feasible as a distributed power plant, especially for the small power scale (no more than 2 MW).

AB  - Austempered ductile iron (ADI) is an advanced cast iron material that has a broad field of application and, among others, it is used in contact and for conveyance of fluids. However, it is noticed that in contact with some fluids, especially water, ADI material becomes brittle. The most significant decrease is established for the elongation. However, the influence of water and the cause of this phenomenon is still not fully understood. For that reason, in this paper, the influence of different water concentrations in ethyl alcohol on the mechanical properties of ADI materials was studied. The test was performed on two different types of ADI materials in 0.2, 4, 10, and 100 vol.% water concentration environments, and in dry condition. It was found that even the smallest concentration of water (0.2 vol.%) causes formation of the embrittled zone at fracture surface. However, not all mechanical properties were affected equally and not all water concentrations have been critical. The highest deterioration was established in the elongation, followed by the ultimate tensile strength, while the proof strength was affected least.

AB  - The aim of this paper is to demonstrate and to quantify energy flows in a life cycle of biogas to biohydrogen production, starting from feedstock materials via anaerobic digestion, biogas upgrading, biohydrogen production, to the end of biogas system (application of digestate as fertilizer in agriculture). The performance of the biogas plant of Mirotin dairy farm in Serbia has been assessed. According to Life Cycle Energy Assessment approach, results obtained in this study have shown that biohydrogen production via biogas steam reforming has negative energy balance (with −16,837 GJ). It has also been demonstrated that this process is energy unsustainable in an environmental context. In future analysis it would be necessary to consider the other aspects of sustainability, e.g. the economical and social factors in order to estimate the overall sustainability of the biogas utilization pathways, especially having in mind that the technology of converting biogas to hydrogen is still in the development phase. © 2021 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC

AB  - Liposomes are promising drug's delivery systems due to decreased toxicity of the liposome-encapsulated drug, but wider clinical application requires their more efficient tumor targeting with uptake, controlled drug release and higher shelf life. The unique metabolic characteristics of cancer cells based on higher demand for energy and therefore increased glucose utilization were exploited in the design of glucose modified liposomes (GML) with the aim to provide increased tumor targeting via glucose transporters and increased ability of drug delivery into tumor cells. Tumor accumulating potential of GML and non-glucose liposomes (NGL) were investigated on CT26 and LS174T tumor-bearing mice by simple and reliable radiotracer method using 177Lu as radioactive marker. Both liposomes, GML and NGL were radiolabeled in high radiolabeling yield, showing high in vitro stability in biological media, as the main prerequisite for the biodistribution studies. Tumors displayed significantly better accumulation of 177Lu-GML with the maximum uptake 6 h post-injection (5.8 ± 0.2%/g in LS174T tumor and 5.1 ± 0.5%/g in CT26 tumor), compared to negligible uptake of 177Lu-NGL (0.6 ± 0.1%/g in LS174T tumor and 0.9 ± 0.2%/g in CT26 tumor). Results of comparative biodistribution studies of 177Lu-NGL and 177Lu-GML indicate that increased accumulation of GML is enabled by glucose transporters and subsequent endocytosis, resulting in their prolonged retention in tumor tissues (up to 72 h). Direct radiolabeling of liposomes with 177Lu may be used not only for biodistribution studies using radiotracking, but also for cancer treatment. © 2021 Elsevier B.V.

The unique metabolic characteristics of cancer cells based on higher demand for energy and therefore increased glucose utilization were exploited in the design of glucose modified liposomes (GML) with the aim to provide increased tumor targeting via glucose transporters and increased ability of drug delivery into tumor cells. Tumor accumulating potential of GML and non-glucose liposomes (NGL) were investigated on CT26 and LS174T tumor-bearing mice by simple and reliable radiotracer method using 177Lu as radioactive marker. Both liposomes, GML and NGL were radiolabeled in high radiolabeling yield, showing high in vitro stability in biological media, as the main prerequisite for the biodistribution studies. Tumors displayed significantly better accumulation of 177Lu-GML with the maximum uptake 6 h post-injection (5.8 ± 0.2%/g in LS174T tumor and 5.1 ± 0.5%/g in CT26 tumor), compared to negligible uptake of 177Lu-NGL (0.6 ± 0.1%/g in LS174T tumor and 0.9 ± 0.2%/g in CT26 tumor). Results of comparative biodistribution studies of 177Lu-NGL and 177Lu-GML indicate that increased accumulation of GML is enabled by glucose transporters and subsequent endocytosis, resulting in their prolonged retention in tumor tissues (up to 72 h). Direct radiolabeling of liposomes with 177Lu may be used not only for biodistribution studies using radiotracking, but also for cancer treatment. © 2021 Elsevier B.V.",

Moreover, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to deeper analysis of the structure and vibrational properties of the synthesized complex. An interesting result is failure of DFT and second order Møller-Plesset perturbation (MP2) methods for prediction of antiferromagnetic coupling in the synthesized complex which introduces its as a new challenging material for future computational chemistry investigations. © 2021 Elsevier B.V.

AB  - Electrochemical and structural properties of LiV2O5 cathode were investigated. Obtained by solid state reaction at high temperature the material crystallized as gamma polymorph phase, γ-LiV2O5. The gamma structure provides two crystallographic sites to accommodate lithium ions, Li1 and Li2 position. Lithium insertion at these two sites occurs at two respective voltages versus lithium metal: ~3.6 V (Li1) and ~2.4 V (Li2). Intercalation at Li1 position is reversible in both organic and aqueous electrolyte and provides stable cycling performance at the high voltage. On the contrary, sluggish insertion/removal of Li+ at Li2 sites causes unstable performance and significant storage capacity fade at lower voltages. Lithium diffusion 3d landscape was determined by bond valence calculations applied on the γ-LiV2O5 phase, as well as on the metastable phases of γ′-V2O5 and ζ-Li2V2O5 that exist at high and low voltages respectively. The model was proposed based on inactivity of Li2 position of the metastable ζ-Li2V2O5 phase which provides explanation for the observed storage capacity loss at low voltages. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l.

AB  - As an inert radioactive gas, 222Rn could be easily transported to the atmosphere via emanation, migration, or exhalation. Research measurements pointed out that 222Rn activity concentration changes during the winter and summer months, as well as during wet and dry season periods. Changes in radon concentration can affect the atmospheric electric field. At the boundary layer near the ground, short-lived daughters of 222Rn can be used as natural tracers in the atmosphere. In this work, factors controlling 222Rn pathways in the environment and its levels in soil gas and outdoor air are summarized. 222Rn has a short half-life of 3.82 days, but the dose rate due to radon and its radioactive progeny could be significant to the living beings. Epidemiological studies on humans pointed out that up to 14% of lung cancers are induced by exposure to low and moderate concentrations of radon. Animals that breed in ground holes have been exposed to the higher doses due to radiation present in soil air. During the years, different dose-effect models are developed for risk assessment on human and non-human biota. In this work are reviewed research results of 222Rn exposure of human and non-human biota. © 2020, ISB.

Cytotoxic activities of Hypericum perforatum L. extracts against 2D and 3D cancer cell models

AB  - Six extracts were obtained from plant species Hypericum perforatum L., collected at Samsun in Turkey. The aim of this study was to examine the mechanisms of the anticancer activity of these extracts. Methanol, ethyl-acetate and hexane were used as a solvents for extraction from both branch-body part of the plant (extracts 1, 2 and 3) and from plant flowers (extracts 4, 5 and 6). The cytotoxic effects of the extracts were determined against 2D and 3D cancer cell models. Cell cycle changes of treated HeLa cells were analyzed by flow cytometry. Measurements of gene and microRNA expression levels in treated HeLa cells were done by quantitative real time PCR. Five examined extracts (2–6) exerted selective concentration-dependent cytotoxic effects on HeLa, K562, and A549 cancer cells, while the extract 1 exhibited very weak cytotoxicity. The extract 6 showed the highest intensity of cytotoxic activity. All tested extracts (2–6) demonstrated the ability to induce apoptosis in HeLa cells through activation of caspase-3. These extracts remarkably decreased gene expression levels of MMP2, MMP9, TIMP3, and VEGFA in HeLa cells. Flower extracts might have stronger effects on miR128/193a-5p/335 level changes than branch-body extracts. Hypericum perforatum extracts exerted weaker cytotoxic effects on 3D HeLa spheroids when compared with their effects on 2D monolayer HeLa cells. Taken together, results of our research may suggest the promising anticancer properties of the Hypericum perforatum extracts. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature B.V.

AB  - Additive-free boron carbide (B4C) – silicon carbide (SiC) ceramic composites with different B4C and β-SiC powders ratio were densified using the high-pressure “anvil-type with hollows” apparatus at 1500 °C under a pressure of 4 GPa for 60 s in air. The effect of starting powders ratio on the composites sintering behavior, relative density, microstructural development, and thermomechanical properties was studied. The sintered samples hardness was found to be in the range from 24 to 31 GPa. The thermal conductivity measurements, conducted in the temperature range from room temperature to 1000 °C, showed that the thermal diffusivity of sintered samples was between 6 and 9.5 mm2/s whereas the thermal conductivity was in the range from 16 to 28 W/(m K). The results of this study show that the high-pressure sintering can be a very effective low-temperature densification method for the obtainment of additive-free B4C - β-SiC ceramic composites. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd

AB  - Background: Gentiana lutea (GL), commonly known as yellow gentian, bitter root, and bit-terwort, belongs to family Gentianaceae. GL belongs to genus Gentiana, which is a rich natural source of iridoids, secoiridoids, xantones, flavonoids, triterpenoids, and carbohydrates. Medicinal plants from Gentiana species have anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-mitogenic, anti-proliferative, and lipid-lowering effects, as well as a cardioprotective, hypotensive, vasodilator and anti-platelet activities. Objective: We reviewed the recent literature related to the effects of Gentiana species, and their active components on vascular diseases. Methods: Data used for this review were obtained by searching the electronic database [PUB-MED/MEDLINE 1973-February 2020]. The primary data search terms of interest were: Gentiana lutea, Gentienacea family, phytochemistry, vascular diseases, treatment of vascular diseases, anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-atherogenic. Conclusion: Gentiana species and their constituents affect many different factors related to vascular disease development and progression. Therefore, Gentiana-based therapeutics represent potentially use-ful drugs for the management of vascular diseases. © 2021 Bentham Science Publishers.

Synergistic effect of 17-allylamino-17-demethoxygeldanamycin with dehydroxymethylepoxyquinomicin on the human anaplastic thyroid carcinoma cell line KTC2

AB  - The use of targeted inhibitors has shown promise as an effective approach in cancer therapy. However, targeted therapies based only on one drug, such as 17-allylamino-17-demethoxygeldanamycin (17-AAG), have limited success, partly because cancer cells engage alternate pathways for survival and proliferation. In the present study, we evaluated whether dehydroxymethylepoxyquinomicin (DHMEQ), a nuclear factor ?B (NF-?B) inhibitor, can enhance the antitumor activities of 17-AAG, a 90 kDa heat shock protein (Hsp90) inhibitor, in the anaplastic thyroid cancer cell line KTC2. We examined the effect of combined drug treatment vs single drug treatment on cell survival. Isobologram analysis was performed to distinguish the additive vs synergistic effects of the drug combination. Western blotting was performed to investigate apoptosis markers: caspase 3, poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase-one (PARP-1), B-cell lymphoma-extra large (Bcl-XL), X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis (XIAP) and cellular inhibitor of apoptosis 2 (cIAP-2). Compared to monotherapy, the combined treatment enhanced growth-inhibitory effects in a synergistic manner and strongly potentiated apoptosis. These results demonstrate the first in vitro evidence that a combination of Hsp90 and NF-?B inhibitors is a more effective modality for inhibiting cell proliferation and survival in anaplastic thyroid carcinoma cells than either agent alone, warranting further investigations.

AB  - Pumpkin seed oil (PSO) possesses a protective potential against liver injury due to the presence of biologically active ingredients. Adult male albino rats were administrated PSO (per os, 2 mL/kg b.w./day) and a 12% ethanol solution in water, ad libitum, with an average intake of 8.14 g of ethanol/kg bw/day for 6 weeks. Congestion, hepatic central vein dilation, portal vein branch dilation, Kupffer cell hyperplasia, fatty liver changes, hepatocyte focal necrosis were observed after daily alcohol intake. All observed changes were reduced when PSO was ingested with ethanol. PSO intake itself induced discrete cellular edema, congestion and slight dilatation of the central and portal vain branches. Chronic ethanol intake elevated catalase (CAT) activity and glutathione reductase (GR) protein expression; concomitant PSO intake had no effect on CAT activity or GR protein expression. PSO intake decreased the activities of GR, glutathione-S-transferase (GST) and xanthine oxidase (XOD) in the liver, probably due to the ingestion of antioxidants. Intake of PSO and ethanol significantly decreased cytosolic superoxide dismutase (SOD1) and increased NF-?B protein expression compared to ethanol intake, suggesting that the protective effects of PSO were mediated by the NF-?B signaling pathway. Our results reveal a therapeutic potential of PSO in alcoholic liver disease.

AB  - Adsorption of anthraquinone dye Acid Blue 111 by alumina-iron oxide doped particles prepared by sol-gel method from aqueous solutions was studied. The adsorbent morphology was revealed by FESEM and the crystallographic phase is analyzed by the XRD technique. The effect of adsorbate and adsorbent concentrations, pH value, type of adsorbent and thermodynamic parameters on dye removal by adsorption was studied. The change of dye concentration during the adsorbtion was followed using the UV-Visible spectrophotometer. The change of the adsorbent surface before and after dye removal was observed using the Fourier Transformation-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The adsorption kinetics is in accordance with the pseudo-second-order kinetics model. The Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm models were used to describe the adsorption process. The thermodynamic study of dye adsorption proves the process is spontaneous with exothermic nature. © 2021 Authors. Published by association for ETRAN Society.

AB  - Solid-state reaction between BaTiO3and Fe2O3was used to produce a multiferroic heterostructure composite. Commercial BaTiO3and Fe(NO3)3•9H2O were suspended in ethanol for 30 minutes in an ultrasound bath. The prepared mixture was thermally processed at 300°C for 6 h. Sintering at 1300 °C for 1 h resulted in a mixture of different phases, BaTiO3, BaFe12O19and Ba12Ti28Fe15O84, which were confirmed by x-ray powder diffraction. A dense microstructure with a small volume fraction of closed porosity was indicated by the scanning electron microscopy, while a homogeneous distribution of Fe ions over BaTiO3phase was visible from energy dispersive spectroscopy mapping. Doping of BaTiO3with Fe2O3resulted in formation of magnetic hexaferrite phases, as confirmed by dielectric measurements that showed a broadened maximum of the permittivity measured as a function of temperature. © 2021 Authors.
