AB - This study is devoted to the construction of the universal ion–crystal interaction potential in proton transmission through very thin crystals. We show how to obtain the interaction potential by using the crystal rainbow theory and rainbows’ morphological analysis in the proton transmission angular plane. By adjusting the shapes of rainbow lines, we modified the Molière’s interaction potential to make it accurate in all regions of the crystal channels. This procedure was based on our previous experimental and theoretical works. As a result, the two axial channeling directions can be treated in the same way leading to more consistent values of the fitting parameters in the ion–atom interaction potential. We obtained the universal rainbow ion–crystal interaction potential for very thin cubic crystals in the (001) and (111) orientations in the case of transmission channeling of 2 MeV proton beam.

AB - 6H-SiC samples have been implanted by 4 MeV C and Si ions in the (0001) channeling direction to the sets of multiple implantation fluences. These samples were analyzed via Elastic Backscattering Spectroscopy in the channeling mode (EBS/C) using 1.725 MeV proton beam, from which SiC amorphization depth profiles and averaged integral 6H-SiC amorphization have been obtained. The averaged integral 6H-SiC crystal amorphization vs implanted fluence dependence has been determined for both types of implanted ions. From these dependences, the 6H-SiC integral crystal amorphization vs. implanted fluence/type of implanted atom assessment model have been proposed.

AB - The influence of the addition of nickel on hydrogen desorption from the MgH2–Ni composite was investigated. The composite powder was ball-milled for 15, 30 and 45 min and characterized by XRD, SEM-EDS, PSD, DSC and TPD methods. It was observed that the uniform distribution of nickel decreases hydrogen desorption temperature by more than 100 °C. A kinetic model for the hydrogen desorption process was also determined. The hydrogen desorption reaction in catalyzed samples is described by the Avrami-Erofeev model with the value of parameter n = 4. The apparent activation energy of the hydrogen desorption reaction was decreased with the increase of milling time and the addition of nickel. It has been shown for the first time that two main processes (grinding and the catalytic effect) could be separately analyzed. It is concluded that for investigated short milling times, the catalytic effect of Ni is predominant.

AB - In modern high-speed semiconductor electronics, there is a high-rate heating of components that is affected by very fast relaxation processes. The relaxation times of these processes should be known for thermal management of these devices. For almost half a century, photoacoustic techniques have been successfully developed and used to investigate physical semiconductor properties. In order to enable observation of fast relaxation processes, the model of pulse photoacoustic signal is proposed that includes influence of thermal relaxations. It is shown that these processes can be observed in a thin semiconductor layer by choosing the frequency of short pulse train and their duty cycle.

AB - We present the temperature distribution predictions for photothermal systems by considering an extension of dual-phase lag. It is an extension of the GCE-II and GCE-III models with a fractional dual-phase lag from kinetic relaxation time. Solving the one-dimensional problem considering a planar and periodic excitation, we obtained the temperature distribution and the Photoacoustic (PA) signal for the transmission setup. We also analyze the effects of fractional order derivatives and kinetic relaxation time. It is shown that the derived models have promising results that could be used to explain the experimentally observed behavior of PA signals measured on thin films with an inhomogeneous internal structure.

AB - We examine the significance of the predictive potential of EPI cystatin C (EPI CysC) in combination with NTproBNP, sodium, and potassium in the evaluation of renal function in patients with cardiorenal syndrome using standard mathematical classification models from the domain of artificial intelligence. The criterion for the inclusion of subjects with combined impairment of heart and kidney function in the study was the presence of newly discovered or previously diagnosed clinically manifest cardiovascular disease and acute or chronic kidney disease in different stages of evolution. In this paper, five standard classifiers from the field of machine learning were used for the analysis of the obtained data: ensemble of neural networks (MLP), ensemble of k-nearest neighbors (k-NN) and naive Bayes classifier, decision tree, and a classifier based on logistic regression. The results showed that in MLP, k-NN, and naive Bayes, EPI CysC had the highest predictive potential. Thus, our approach with utility classifiers recognizes the essence of the disorder in patients with cardiorenal syndrome and facilitates the planning of further treatment.

AB - In this paper, the possibility of determining the thermal, elastic and geometric characteristics of a thin TiO2 film deposited on a silicon substrate, with a thickness of 30 μm, in the frequency range of 20 to 20 kHz with neural networks were analysed. For this purpose, the geometric (thickness), thermal (thermal diffusivity, coefficient of linear expansion) and electronic parameters of substrates were known and constant in the two-layer model, while the following nano-layer thin-film parameters were changed: thickness, expansion and thermal diffusivity. Predictions of these three parameters of the thin-film were analysed separately with three neural networks. All of them together were joined by a fourth neural network. It was shown that the neural network, which analysed all three parameters at the same time, achieved the highest accuracy, so the use of networks that provide predictions for only one parameter is less reliable. The obtained results showed that the application of neural networks in determining the thermoelastic properties of a thin film on a supporting substrate enables the estimation of its characteristics with great accuracy.

AB - In this work, the influence of the thermal and mechanical piston effects over the frequency at which the amplitudes of the components of the photoacoustic signal resulting from these two effects are equalized. The analysis was done in the measuring range 10 to 20kHz. An aluminum sample illuminated with modulated light, whose thickness varies from 10 to 1000 microns, was considered. It is important for development reliable inverse procedures and determination various properties of samples from experimental measurement.

AB - Irrational and transcendental functions can often be seen in signal processing or physical phenomena analysis as consequences of fractional-order and distributed-order models that result in fractional or partial differential equations. In cases when finding solution in analytical form tends to be difficult or impossible, numerical calculations such as Haar wavelet operational matrix method can be used. In order to evaluate accuracy of the numerical inversion of irrational and transcendental Laplace transform using Haar wavelet operational matrix, a number inverse Laplace transforms are numerically solved and compared with the analytical solutions and solutions provided by Invlap and NILT algorithms.

All the samples crystallize in a monoclinic Fergusonite-beta-(Y) structure (C2/c space group), with 45–65 nm crystallite sizes and show a strong orange/red luminescence with 5D0 excited state lifetimes of around 0.6 ms. Photoluminescence emission spectra showed no concentration quenching within the examined concentration range. Judd–Ofelt intensity parameters show a slight increase with rising concentration, up to Ω2 = 8.13∙10−20 cm2, Ω4 = 2.67∙10−20 cm2, and Ω6 is concentration invariant with the 0.35∙10−20 cm2 value. Emission lifetimes of the 5D0 state are almost constant with ∼0.6 ms, and a slight decrease is observed with the highest concentrations. The intrinsic quantum yield of all the samples is about 0.5.

AB - We report the procedure for hydrothermal synthesis of ultrasmall Yb3+/Tm3+ co-doped Sr2LaF7 (SLF) upconversion phosphors. These phosphors were synthesized by varying the concentrations of Yb3+ (x = 10, 15, 20, and 25 mol%) and Tm3+ (y = 0.75, 1, 2, and 3 mol%) with the aim to analyze their emissions in the near IR spectral range. According to the detailed structural analysis, Yb3+ and Tm3+ occupy the La3+ sites in the SLF host. The addition of Yb3+/Tm3+ ions has a huge impact on the lattice constant, particle size, and PL emission properties of the synthesized SLF nanophosphor. The results show that the optimal dopant concentrations for upconversion luminescence of Yb3+/Tm3+ co-doped SLF are 20 mol% Yb3+ and 1 mol% Tm3+ with EDTA as the chelating agent. Under 980 nm light excitation, a strong upconversion emission of Tm3+ ions around 800 nm was achieved. In addition, the experimental photoluminescence lifetime of Tm3+ emission in the SLF host is reported. This study discovered that efficient near IR emission from ultrasmall Yb3+/Tm3+ co-doped SLF phosphors may have potential applications in the fields of fluorescent labels in bioimaging and security applications.

AB - Colloidal stabilization of magnetic nanoparticles is one of the most important steps in the preparation of magnetic nanoparticles for potential biomedical applications. A special kind of magnetic nanoparticle are barium hexaferrite nanoplatelets (BSHF NPLs) with a hexagonal shape and a permanent magnetic moment. One strategy for the stabilization of BHF in aqueous media is to use coatings. In our research, we used an eco-friendly tannic acid, as a coating on BSHF NPLs. As-prepared BSHF NPLs coated with tannic acid were examined with transmission electron microscopy, infrared and UV-Vis spectroscopy, electro-kinetic measurements, and their room-temperature magnetic properties were measured. Stable colloids were tested in two biological complex media and antimicrobial properties of the material were examined. To enhance the antimicrobial properties of our material, we used tannic acid as a platform for the in-situ production of silver on BSHF NPLs. New hybrid material with silver also possesses magnetic properties and excellent antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus.

AB - Luminescence thermometry is the most versatile remote temperature sensing technique and can be employed from living cells to large surfaces and from cryogenic temperatures to the melting points of metals. Ongoing research aims to optimize the sensitivity of the ratio between the emission intensity from two coupled excited states. However, this approach is inherently limited to temperature-dependent processes involving only the excited states. Here, we develop a novel measurement technique, called luminescence intensity ratio squared (LIR2) for the Yb3+/Er3+ pair, that combines the temperature sensitivity of ground- and excited-state populations. We use Y3Al5O12:Er3+,Yb3+ nanoparticles as a promising model system with both visible and infrared emissions. To apply our method, we record two luminescence spectra at different excitation wavelengths and determine the LIR2 using one emission in each of the two spectra. The LIR2 testing with Y3Al5O12 nanoparticles showed a sensitivity increase of 70% in the visible region and an impressive 230% increase in the NIR region compared to the conventional LIR method. This enhances the measurement precision by a factor of 1.5–2.5. The LIR2 based on the visible upconversion emission is particularly useful for measurements of high temperatures, while the LIR2 based on the downshifted ∼1.5 μm emission may revolutionize temperature measurements of biological samples in the range of physiological temperatures.

AB - Lifetime-based luminescence thermometry has been shown to enable accurate deep-tissue monitoring of temperature changes – even at the in vivo level – in a minimally invasive way. However, major limiting factors to the performance of this approach are short lifetimes and poor brightness. These are characteristics, respectively, of semiconductor nanocrystals and lanthanide-doped nanoparticles, of which most luminescent nanothermometers are made. To address these limitations, the composition of luminescent nanothermometers co-doped with transition metal (Mn5+) and Er3+ ions are designed and optimized. The salient features of these nanothermometers are strong, near-infrared emission and long, temperature-dependent photoluminescence lifetime. The potential of these luminescent nanophosphors for thermal sensing is then showcased by monitoring a thermal gradient using a one-of-a-kind piece of equipment designed for lifetime-based luminescence thermometry measurements. The combination of the newly developed nanothermometers and the custom-made instrument allows for obtaining 2D thermal maps both in the absence and presence of tissue phantoms mimicking the optical properties of the skin. The results presented in this study thus provide credible foundations for the deployment of lifetime-based thermometry for accurate deep-tissue thermal mapping at the preclinical level.

AB - The understanding of complex relationships between luminescent properties, local symmetry of an emitting center, and the host crystal structure provides a better insight into optical properties of materials. In this work, the alkaline earths CaF2 and BaF2 fluoride crystals doped with 0.1 mol% ErF3 were investigated. The crystals structure has been studied using a synchrotron and laboratory X-ray diffraction. The C3v and C4v sites symmetry were determined using erbium probed high resolution emission spectroscopy (HRPL) at low temperature (LT) of 10 K. The considerable difference in room temperature (RT) optical properties for CaF2 compared to BaF2 crystals was observed. Such difference in absorption intensity of 4.7 times of erbium 4G11/2 manifold in UV, and 7.5 times in green emission from 4S3/2 manifold, could be due to the distinction in the host crystals cationic radius (ΔrCa,Ba) and the dopant-host ionic radius (ΔrCa-Er, ΔrBa-Er). Those Δr differences influence the structure and lead to the following symmetry formation: In CaF2, the C4v and C3v isolated centers were identified, with the determined Er3+- F−i bond lengths of 2.734 Å and 4.735 Å respectively; In BaF2, only C3v isolated centers were identified with the determined Er3+- F−i bond lengths of 5.380 Å. The present work is the first study that takes into account correlations of optical properties, the local symmetry and the structure in mentioned fluorides crystals, and it could be a step forward in the lanthanide doped optical materials systematics.

AB - A biphasic [Mn(dipya)(H2O)4](tpht)/{[Zn(dipya)(tpht)]·H2O}n complex material, I (dipya = 2,2’-dipyridylamine, tpht2– = dianion of terephthalatic acid) was synthesized by ligand exchange reaction and characterized by XRPD and FTIR spectroscopy. A ZnO/ZnMn2O4 composite, II, has been prepared via thermal decomposition of I in an air atmosphere at 450 °C. XRPD, FTIR and FESEM analyses of II revealed the simultaneous presence of spherical nanoparticles of wurtzite ZnO and elongated nanoparticles of spinel ZnMn2O4. The specific surface area of II was determined by the BET method, whereas the volume and average size of the mesopores were calculated in accordance with the BJH method. The measurements of the mean size, polydispersity index and zeta potential showed colloidal instability of II. Two band gap values of 2.4 and 3.3 eV were determined using UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, while the measurements of photoluminescence revealed that II is active in the blue region of the visible spectrum. Testing of composite II as a pigmentary material showed that it can be used for the colouring of a ceramic glaze.

AB - Finding thermal history phosphors with high sensitivity and a consistent readout is required for reliable thermal history determination with high temperature resolution. This work presents a new thermal history phosphor based on the luminescence of Eu3+ ions in LaVO4 to meet these requirements. As demonstrated, raising the annealing temperature causes a structural phase transition from a low-temperature tetragonal phase to a high-temperature single-stranded phase. The associated change in the local point symmetry of the crystallographic site occupied by Eu3+ ions result in a significant decrease in the emission intensity ratio of the 5D0 → 7F2 band relative to the 5D0 → 7F1 band, which enables the development of the ratiometric thermal history phosphor with the relative sensitivity of 0.38% °C−1 at 800 °C. Its applicative potential for thermal history readout was proved in the proof-of-concept experiment.

AB - Herein, we investigate the performance of single- and multiparametric luminescence thermometry founded on the temperature-dependent spectral features of Ca6BaP4O17:Mn5+ near-infrared emission. The material was prepared by a conventional steady-state synthesis, and its photoluminescence emission was measured from 7500 to 10,000 cm−1 over the 293–373 K temperature range in 5 K increments. The spectra are composed of the emissions from 1E → 3A2 and 3T2 → 3A2 electronic transitions and Stokes and anti-Stokes vibronic sidebands at 320 cm−1 and 800 cm−1 from the maximum of 1E → 3A2 emission. Upon temperature increase, the 3T2 and Stokes bands gained in intensity while the maximum of 1E emission band is redshifted. We introduced the procedure for the linearization and feature scaling of input variables for linear multiparametric regression. Then, we experimentally determined accuracies and precisions of the luminescence thermometry based on luminescence intensity ratios between emissions from the 1E and 3T2 states, between Stokes and anti-Stokes emission sidebands, and at the 1E energy maximum. The multiparametric luminescence thermometry involving the same spectral features showed similar performance, comparable to the best single-parameter thermometry.

AB - In accordance with ISO/IEC 17025:2017, the testing laboratory needs to verify its ability to properly perform methods. For radiological testing, the sampling does not affect the results directly, but it has to ensure that sample adequately represents the tested material. To verify the procedure, a sampling of red mud and bauxite ore was conducted. All samples were measured in identical geometry by HPGe spectrometer. The counting rates per unit mass in the recorded spectra were compared. For each measurement series, the mean and standard deviations of respected peaks were calculated, as well as average and standard deviation of all series. The obtained results of each individual series were considered satisfactory, i.e. sampling procedure ensures the representativeness of the bulk material, if it is within ± two standard deviations of the average of the mean values.

AB - This work presents the natural radioactivity distribution of 21 surface soil samples taken in the city of Novi Sad, Serbia. The analysis for radioactivity was performed using a gas low-level proportional counter for gross alpha and gross beta activity, while the specific activities of radionuclides were determined using HPGe detectors. The gross alpha activity of 20 samples was below the minimum detectable concentration (MDC), while in 1 sample it was 243 Bq kg−1; the gross beta activity ranged from the MDC (11 samples) to 566 Bq kg−1. The gamma spectrometry measurements showed naturally occurring radionuclides 226Ra, 232Th, 40K, and 238U in all investigated samples, with average values (Bq kg−1) of 33.9, 36.7, 513.8, and 34.7, respectively. Natural radionuclide 235U was detected in 18 samples with activity concentrations in the range of 1.3–4.1 Bq kg−1, while in the other 3 samples, the values were below the MDC. The artificial 137Cs radionuclide was detected in 90 percent of the samples, with a maximum value of 21 Bq kg−1, while the other artificial radionuclides were not detected. Based on the obtained concentrations of natural radionuclides, hazard indexes were estimated, and radiological health risk was assessed. The results present the absorbed gamma dose rate in the air, annual effective dose, radium equivalent activity, external hazard index, and lifetime cancer risk.

AB - Hydrogels with oligo(ethylene glycol) (OEG), oligo(propylene glycol) (OPG), and for the first time with combined OEG/OPG pendant chains within the methacrylate (MA) network, were synthesized and the swelling behavior, thermal properties, microstructure, and genotoxicity were investigated. Prior to hydrogel fabrication, an optimized method was developed for oligo(propylene glycol) methacrylate (OPGMA), i.e., oligomer with an LCST below a temperature at which synthesis occurs, indicating that proper preparation and tuning of reaction conditions were required. PEG6MA and PPG5MA homopolymers, as well as P(EG6/PG5)MA copolymer hydrogel, were produced by gamma radiation-induced polymerization and crosslinking of OEG and OPG monomers from the monomer-solvent mixture by using different water/ethanol composition as a solvent and by exposing the reaction mixture to various radiation doses. The combination of OEG and OPG pendant chains within the same network was advantageous in that it allowed an easy tuning of the phase transition temperature. Thus, the volume phase transition (VPT) at temperatures above 70 °C observed in the case of PEG6MA, and in the case of PPG5MA at temperatures below 15 °C, could easily be tuned close to physiological temperatures for P(EG6/PG5)MA hydrogel. Finally, all obtained thermoresponsive hydrogels showed non-genotoxic and non-cytotoxic properties, which indicate promising potential for biomedical applications.

AB - The development of novel materials for hydrogen storage and conversion applications is expected to facilitate the transition to clean energy. In particular, near-ambient hydrogen storage, thermal energy storage, and lithium conversion electrodes are selected in this study as the applications for which the development of novel Mg-containing materials is of great importance. We utilize a machine learning model, based on the graph neural network, developed for predicting hydride formation enthalpy in intermetallic compounds, to perform high-throughput screening based on the atomic composition and crystal structure of the starting intermetallic compounds. Trends and structure-property relations are discussed, as well as the possibilities for tailoring the stability of Mg-containing hydrides by alloying. For 636 compounds identified as stable by DFT calculations, we predict hydride formation enthalpy and equilibrium potential of metal hydride conversion electrode for Li-ion batteries. Based on the predicted enthalpy of hydride formation, 32 intermetallics are identified as suitable for near-ambient hydrogen storage applications. Among them, MgBe13, seen as a promising material to achieve a high gravimetric density of hydrogen, is additionally studied using DFT. Further investigation of the Na-Mg-Al alloys is proposed as a good route in the search for new thermal energy storage materials. Binary Mg-containing intermetallics are discussed as conversion-type negative electrodes in Li-ion batteries.

AB - We present a theoretical prediction of a novel, nonEIT, mechanism for the achievement of a transparency window. It relies on an intrinsically nonlinear (soliton type) mechanism which may be exploited for the production of slow light, which may appear in a photonic band-gap structure: the infinite coupled cavity array (CCA), filled with two-level systems - qubits. Each cavity contains a single qubit. The most important prediction is substantial dependence of the pulse transparency on its width. In particular, the medium is opaque for very short pulses with carrier wave frequency below the photonic gap. When the pulse width exceeds the critical one, a twin transparency window separated by a finite band gap appears in the SIT pulse dispersion law. Both low-frequency TW and the SIT pulse band gap lie entirely within the polaritonic band gap.

AB - It is increasingly apparent that the prevention/treatment of neurodegenerative disorders is not only achieved through pharmacological therapy but also through the consumption of natural products. Flaxseed oil (or linseed oil, FSO) derived from the seeds of the flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) gained worldwide awareness as a neuroprotective agent due to its high content of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs). Thus, the aim of this study was to examine the preventive effects of dietary FSO in trimethyltin (TMT) - induced hippocampal neurodegeneration and gliosis in female Wistar rats. Animals were continuously treated with FSO (1 ml/kg, orally) for two weeks, then received a single dose of TMT (8 mg/kg, i.p.), and application of FSO continued for twenty-one days. Data have convincingly shown that FSO continuous treatment ameliorated TMT-induced neuronal loss in the CA3 hippocampal region and ameliorated astrogliosis and microgliosis. FSO treatment elevated all tested n-3 fatty acids in the hippocampus: α-linolenic acid (ALA), docosapentaenoic acid (DPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and consequently increased total amount of n-3 PUFA. However, no changes in n-6 fatty acids due to FSO treatment were observed. Consequently, FSO lowered n-6/n-3 ratio compared to TMT, having a protective effect on fatty acid profile in hippocampus. These findings support beneficial neuroprotective properties of FSO against TMT-induced model of neurodegeneration and hint at a promising preventive use of FSO in hippocampal degeneration and dysfunction

AB - Mfsd2a is expressed mainly in the endothelial cells and is an essential regulator of blood vessel transcytosis. Therefore, decrease in Mfsd2a expression can be a risk factor for developing leaky blood vessels. Mfsd2a is also the main docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, C22:6n3) transporter. DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid, is one of the main structural lipids of the neuronal and vascular retina, crucial for the normal functioning of photoreceptors (PRs). However, the capacity of the retina to synthesize DHA is limited, and the maintenance of retinal DHA content relies on the uptake from bloodborne lipids. The currently recommended FO doses yielded low PUFAs tissue bioavailability, and supplementation with higher doses has been increasingly recommended. Nevertheless, the effects of higher FO doses on retinal Mfsd2a expression and blood vessels coverage are unknown. Western blot and qPCR analyses showed that high dose FO supplementation increased Mfsd2a expression in the retina. Immunohistochemical analyses of Mfsd2a expression on retinal blood vessels (labeled with 488-conjugated Lycopersicon esculentum, lectin) and subsequent ImageJ analyses revealed 1.32-fold increase in the Mfsd2a retinal blood vessel coverage. In the same time the pericyte blood vessel coverage (CD13+ cells) was not affected with FO supplementation, and the increase in Mfsd2a blood vessel expression is not the result of the increased pericyte coverage. Therefore, the high-dose FO supplementation emerges as the prophylactic fortifier of the retinal blood vessels that can serve either as prophylaxis in the healthy eye or as an adjuvant in developing targeted manipulations of the barrier during diseases.

abstract = "Mfsd2a is expressed mainly in the endothelial cells and is an essential regulator of blood vessel transcytosis. Therefore, the high-dose FO supplementation emerges as the prophylactic fortifier of the retinal blood vessels that can serve either as prophylaxis in the healthy eye or as an adjuvant in developing targeted manipulations of the barrier during diseases.",
