AB - In this paper, the coordination of 4-methylpyrazole (L) to Ni(II) and Zn(II) ions is studied through the reactions of Ni(OAc)2·4H2O and Zn(OAc)2·2H₂O with 4-methylpyrazole in a 1:2 metal-to-ligand molar ratio in ethanol at room temperature. From the reaction mixtures, new complex compounds of formulae: [Ni(OAc)2L4] and [Zn(OAc)2L2] were crystallized. The crystal and molecular structure of the synthesized complexes were determined by single-crystal X-ray structure analysis. The coordination environment of Ni(II) in its complex is octahedral, while that of Zn(II) is tetrahedral. The compounds are characterized by IR spectra and elemental analysis. Their thermal stability, a crucial property, is analyzed by thermogravimetry. To get a better insight into the decomposition mechanism coupled TG-MS measurements were carried out, too. The tests of the antioxidative activity of the new complexes on DPPH radical showed that the Zn(II) complex is more effective than the Ni(II) complex.

AB - In this work, Cu(II) complexes with meso‑HMPAO and d,l-HMPAO were synthesized. The structural characterisation of the isolated compounds has been done by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, FTIR, and mass spectroscopy. Redox properties of complexes and binding to deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) molecule have been analysed in detail by cyclic voltammetry and DFT calculations. The results of cyclic voltammetry fully agree with the data obtained by DFT calculations and indicate that the first electron removal takes place from the metal, while the second electron is removed from the ligand. The formation of the complex leads to the shift in oxidation peaks of the ligand from ‒0.29 V to 0,47 V and from 1.18 V to 1,24 V, indicating that ligand in the complex is much more difficult to oxidize. Electrochemical data confirmed the binding between the complex and DNA molecules through guanine. DFT calculations show that the complex is suitable not only for binding purine and pyrimidine bases through a coordination bond but also for additional hydrogen and CH-π interactions of the bases with the ligand. The fluorescence titration experiments revealed a moderate binding affinity of the [Cu-HMPAO]ClO4 complex to human serum albumin (HSA). Molecular docking revealed that this ligand preferentially binds to drug binding site 3 of HSA. Therefore, the novel compounds could be of great interest for further investigation, considering the potential anticancer activity, and as a model for the development of radiopharmaceutical with 64Cu.

AB - Infectious diseases represent one of the major challenges in clinical treatment. In pursuit of efficient and affordable antimicrobial materials, natural biomass-derived products have attracted extensive research and industrial attention due to their excellent biocompatibility, biodegradability, and intriguing antimicrobial properties. This review provides an in-depth exploration of the action mechanisms and applications of biomassderived antimicrobial materials. Diverse bioactive components, including proteins, polysaccharides, antioxidants, and phenolic compounds, are employed to inhibit bacterial growth, reduce viral transmission, and prevent fungal infections via multiple mechanisms, e.g., adsorption on viruses, disruption of cell walls, and interference with cell metabolism. The widespread application and versatility of biomass-derived bioactives in the biomedical f ield not only provide novel strategies to treat clinical infections but also contribute to sustainable development and biomass waste reduction. However, further research is needed to address challenges in the standardization of production and stability of biomass-derived antimicrobial materials to ensure their sustainable clinical applications.

AB - Laboratory exercises are an important part of the teaching process at many faculties. However, despite the fact that today the implementation of laboratory exercises is carried out on modern equipment, the full potential of that equipment is often not used, that is, often some of the possibilities of modern equipment are not fully used in student practice. In the paper, it will be shown on two cases from practice how the student user experience can be expanded by using exactly those "forgotten" options. In the first case, a solution based on the full use of Standard Commands for Programmable Instruments (SCPI), which are implemented on most modern measuring devices, will be presented. The second case will consider the application of open source hardware and software supported by LoRa connectivity, which enables the expansion of the spectrum of exercises performed by students. It will be shown that both solutions can be implemented without a high level of complexity and large financial efforts for the higher education institution itself.

AB - Today, modern teaching relies heavily on the use of different software solutions, and modern teaching processes partly require the application of home learning concepts, which imply the application of those software solutions on personal student computer resources. By trying to provide software environments identical to those within higher education institutions, certain problems were identified that should be overcome in order to ensure the quality of the teaching process. The paper presents a possible solution based on the features provided by free and open source software (FOSS) and which enables easy and practical implementation of a uniform software environment for each student, regardless of the personal computer environment that is currently in use.

AB - This study investigates the effects of Zn substitution on the magnetic properties of ∼5 nm cobalt ferrite nanoparticles (ZnxCo1−xFe2O4, where x = 0, 0.13, 0.34, and 0.55), demonstrating that Zn substitution induces complex changes in spin canting and prompts a redistribution of cations among the sublattices. We reconstructed the magnetic structure of these spinel ferrites by integrating the classical two-sublattice Néel model of ferrimagnetism with the data obtained from 57Fe Mössbauer spectrometry. Consequently, this research provides a comprehensive understanding of how Zn substitution tunes the magnetic properties of CoFe2O4 nanoparticles, offering valuable insights into the development of magnetic materials with tailored properties for various applications.

abstract = "This study investigates the effects of Zn substitution on the magnetic properties of ∼5 nm cobalt ferrite nanoparticles (ZnxCo1−xFe2O4, where x = 0, 0.13, 0.34, and 0.55), demonstrating that Zn substitution induces complex changes in spin canting and prompts a redistribution of cations among the sublattices. We reconstructed the magnetic structure of these spinel ferrites by integrating the classical two-sublattice Néel model of ferrimagnetism with the data obtained from 57Fe Mössbauer spectrometry. Consequently, this research provides a comprehensive understanding of how Zn substitution tunes the magnetic properties of CoFe2O4 nanoparticles, offering valuable insights into the development of magnetic materials with tailored properties for various applications.",

AB - The pollution of the water environment with antibiotics is a major concern worldwide. One of the most detected antibiotics in the treated wastewater is ciprofloxacin. Ciprofloxacin is a synthetic fluoroquinolone derivative with a large usage scale for inflammatory treatment for animals and humans. As UV-based photodegradation with semiconductor-based nanomaterials has shown promising results for antibiotic removal, in this research, we synthesized TiO2 modified with Fe in three different molar ratios (0.5, 1 and 2 %) and applied it to the photodegradation of the ciprofloxacin infusion solution. The photodegradation process was monitored by UV-Vis spectroscopy for 240 minutes. The results indicate that increasing the molar ratio of iron in the photocatalyst increases the degradation efficiency

AB - Toxic elements, lead, and copper are often found in wastewater discharged from industries such as mining. The discharge of untreated effluent poses severe environmental challenges and sorption methods using agricultural waste materials are proposed as an efficient and cost-effective solution. For this research, activated sunflower material (ASM) was prepared from abundantly available agricultural sunflower waste residues and utilised to remove Pb2+ and Cu2+ ions from an aqueous medium. To begin, we examine variables that may have an impact on the adsorption process, such as pH, contact time, adsorbent dose, and initial concentration using Box-Behnken Design (BBD) to find optimal conditions. Maximum removal efficiency was found at a pH of 5, contact time of 180 min, and initial concentration of 50 mg/L for Pb2+ and 150 mg/L for Cu2+. Additionally, adsorbent dose differed by element, for Cu2+ it was 200 mg, whilst for Pb2+ it was 124 mg. Features of activated carbon such as morphology, elemental composition, textural properties, and surface functionalities were characterised using SEM-EDS, BET, FTIR, and XPS. The adsorption equilibrium data were analysed by Langmuir, Freundlich, and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm models. It was found that the obtained results for Pb2+ adsorption were better described with the Freundlich isotherm model. Maximum adsorption capacities for Pb2+ and Cu2+ were 91.8 mg/g and 20.5 mg/g, respectively. Furthermore, kinetic studies confirmed that the adsorption process followed a pseudo-first-order kinetic model for Pb2+, but for Cu2+ all applied kinetic models fitted experimental data with the same values of the correlation coefficient (R2 = 0.99). After comprehensive analysis using the methods mentioned above, ASM was tested for the removal of Cu2+ from mining wastewater sample, and the obtained removal efficiency was 98.6% ± 2.0%. The results of desorption experiments conducted, confirm that ASM has good potential to be reused for the purpose of removing Cu2+ from wastewater.

AB - In this study, we compared the applicability of three nanoparticle deposition techniques (spray coating, spark discharge nanoparticle generation, magnetron sputtering) towards elemental mapping by nanoparticle-enhanced laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (NE-LIBS). It was found that sputtering followed by a thermal treatment at 550 °C can provide a homogenous, practical and controllable way of NE-LIBS sample preparation with gold nanoparticles. The laser ablation properties of the created NP layer was also studied in detail and it was established that a 200 μm laser spot size is good compromise between the NE-LIBS signal enhancement and the spatial resolution required for mapping. A signal enhancement of about a factor of 10 with good repeatability (ca. 5 %RSD) in a line scanning demonstration was achieved on glass for Si detection. For samples that are fairly temperature and vacuum stable, this approach allows the signal enhancement to be used in mapping applications.

AB - Anthropogenic pollution poses a major threat to aquatic ecosystems, which can lead to their degradation. The accumulation and toxicity of metals and trace elements in fish leads to physiological and chemical changes in the fish body. In this study, we investigated the effects of bioaccumulation of metals and trace elements on freshwater fish fatty acid profiles at two different sites before and after the discharge of untreated municipal wastewater in two fish species with different diet habits. Although the concentrations of toxic elements were below the maximum levels proposed by the EU and the Republic of Serbia, this study showed statistically significant correlations between the presence of certain elements and the fatty acid (FA) profile in fish muscle. Lower concentrations of polyunsaturated FA in fish sampled after the discharge of untreated municipal wastewater were detected.
AB - In this study, the concentrations of metals and trace elements (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb and Zn) were determined in the muscle tissue of adult roach and white bream at two different sites in the Belgrade section of the Danube. Twenty-six fatty acids, consisting of nine saturated FA (SFAs), seven monosaturated FA (MUFAs) and ten polysaturated FA (PUFAs), were identified. The analysis of the concentration of metals and trace elements of the roach and white bream showed species-specific differences in their bioaccumulation. Four of all elements analyzed (As, Hg, Ni and Pb) correlated significantly with the changes in FA profiles in fish from both sampling sites, with the exception of Cu, which correlated with the FA profile at the site before, and Zn, whose concentration influenced the FA profile at the site after wastewater discharges. The lower PUFA content in the fish from a site under higher environment pressure could indicate that the fish are stressed. The results suggest that changes in lipid composition may be one of the protective mechanisms of cells to cope with anthropogenic stressors.

AB - Harmful cyanobacteria blooms and the escalating impact of cyanotoxins necessitates the effective removal of cyanobacteria from water ecosystems before they release cyanotoxins. In this study, cyanobacteria removal from water samples taken from the eutrophic Aleksandrovac Lake (southern Serbia) was investigated. For that purpose, novel activated carbons derived from waste biomass—date palm leaf stalk (P_AC), black alder cone-like flowers (A_AC), and commercial activated carbon from coconut shell (C_AC) as a reference were used. To define the best adsorption conditions and explain the adsorption mechanism, the influence of contact time, reaction volume, and adsorbent mass, as well as FTIR analysis of the adsorbents before and after cyanobacteria removal, were studied. The removal efficiency of P_AC and A_AC achieved for the applied concentration of 10 mg/mL after 15 min was ~99%, while for C_AC after 24 h was only ~92% for the same concentration. To check the safety of the applied materials for human health and the environment, the concentrations of potentially toxic elements (PTEs), the health impact (HI) after water purification, and the toxicity (MTT and Comet assay) of the materials were evaluated. Although the P_AC and A_AC achieved much better removal properties in comparison with the C_AC, considering the demonstrated genotoxicity and cytotoxicity of the P_AC and the higher HI value for the C_AC, only the A_AC was further investigated. Results of the kinetics, FTIR analysis, and examination of the A_AC mass influence on removal efficiency indicated dominance of the physisorption mechanism. Initially, the findings highlighted the superior performance of A_AC, with great potential to be globally commercialized as an effective cyanobacteria cell adsorbent.

AB - This study investigates the impact of changing parameters on the photocatalytic degradation of carbofuran (CBF) using laser-treated TiO2 nanotube arrays on a Ti mesh under simulated sunlight irradiation and assessing toxicity during photocatalytic degradation. Various parameters, including the stirring effect, light intensity, initial CBF concentration, and variation in the active surface area of laser-treated TiO2 photocatalysts, were examined to determine their impact on degradation efficiency. The photodegradation kinetics were monitored using ultra-performance liquid chromatography with a PDA detector (UPLC-PDA) and UV-Vis spectrophotometry, while mineralization was assessed by a total organic carbon (TOC) analyzer. The photocatalytic degradation of CBF is enhanced by an increase in the active surface area of the TiO2 photocatalyst, light intensity, and the introduction of stirring, but it decreases with an increase in the initial concentration of CBF. The toxicity assessments revealed that the cytotoxicity of CBF initially increased during the degradation process but decreased after further treatment, indicating the formation and subsequent breakdown of toxic intermediates. The phytotoxicity test showed that longer degradation times resulted in higher toxicity to plant growth. This study provides new insights into the photocatalytic degradation of CBF with TiO2, the importance of parameter optimization for more efficient treatment, and the use of toxicity tests to confirm the success of the photocatalytic process

AB - Securing ever-increasing energy demands while reducing resilience on fossil fuels is a major task of modern society. Fuel cells are devices in which the chemical energy of various fuels can be converted into clean electricity. Direct ethanol fuel cells (DEFC) are increasingly popular for their eco-friendliness and significantly easier liquid fuel manipulation compared to hydrogen-fed fuel cells. Carbon-supported Pt nanoparticles are considered reference catalysts for fuel oxidation in DEFCs. Several challenges hinder DEFC commercialization: high Pt-loading, Pt poisoning by CO intermediates, and the instability of the Pt and carbon supports. This work demonstrates an efficient electrocatalyst for ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) composed of Pt nanoparticles supported on electrochemically exfoliated graphene (Pt/el-rGO). Graphene was obtained through anodic electrochemical exfoliation using graphitic tape as the anode, while Pt nanoparticles were synthesized using chemical reduction with formic acid. As-obtained Pt/el-rGO with only 7.5 wt.% Pt was characterized using TEM, SEM, and XPS. Pt/el-rGO exhibited notably higher EOR catalytic activity in an alkaline electrolyte than the Pt/C benchmark. This enhancement can be linked with the functional groups present on the graphene support, which facilitate ethanol dehydrogenation as the first step in the EOR mechanism and thus enhance reaction kinetics on Pt-active sites.

AB - Nowadays, bacteria resistance to many antibiotics is a huge problem, especially in clinics and other parts of the healthcare system. This critical health issue requires a dynamic approach to produce new types of antibacterial coatings to combat various pathogen microbes. In this research, we prepared a new type of carbon quantum dots based on phloroglucinol using the bottom-up method. Polyurethane composite films were produced using the swell–encapsulation–shrink method. Detailed electrostatic force and viscoelastic microscopy of carbon quantum dots revealed inhomogeneous structure characterized by electron-rich/soft and electron-poor/hard regions. The uncommon photoluminescence spectrum of carbon quantum dots core had a multipeak structure. Several tests confirmed that carbon quantum dots and composite films produced singlet oxygen. Antibacterial and antibiofouling efficiency of composite films was tested on eight bacteria strains and three bacteria biofilms.

AB - Silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) have been produced by low-dose (1–20 kGy) gamma irradiation of silver nitrate in the presence of graphene-based material (graphene oxide or electrochemically exfoliated graphene). The large surface area of those graphene-based materials combined with the presence of oxygen-containing functional groups on the surface provided successful nucleation and growth of Ag nanoparticles, which resulted in a uniformly covered graphene surface. The obtained Ag nanoparticles were spherical with a predominant size distribution of 10–50 nm for graphene oxide and 10–100 nm for electrochemically exfoliated graphene. The photothermal efficiency measurement showed a temperature increase upon exposure to a 532 nm laser for all samples and the highest photothermal efficiency was measured for the graphene oxide/Ag NP sample prepared at 5 kGy. Electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding efficiency measurements showed poor shielding for the composites prepared with graphene oxide. On the other hand, all composites prepared with electrochemically exfoliated graphene showed EMI shielding to some extent, and the best performance was measured for the samples prepared at 5 and 20 kGy doses.

AB - Over the last decades, bacterial resistance has become one of the emerging health threats. Particularly dangerousare bacterial strains resistant to various antibacterial drugs. Herein, we modified graphene quantum dots (GQDs)to produce efficient photo-induced antibacterial agents. GQDs were modified with (a) ethylene-diamine (EDA),(b) with EDA and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), and (c) 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole (TA) using carbodiimide coupling.Photo-induced antibacterial activity of modified GQDs was tested against 8 bacterial strains. Treatment withmodified GQDs and blue light (wavelength of 470 nm) resulted in remarkable antibacterial activity with minimalinhibitory concentrations (MIC) of 7.81 μg mL -1 for K. pneumoniae and S. aureus and 3.9 μg mL-1 against MRSAand E. faecalis. Planar organization of GQDs functionalized with AuNPs allowed direct access of molecular oxygento AuNPs leading to more efficient 1O2 production as well as the 1O2 production from excited GQDs. Thus,GQDs functionalized with AuNPs showed outstanding efficiency in the battle against several bacterial strains, particularly those that lead to nosocomial infections.

AB - Last decade, a growing emphasis on developing sustainable and environmentally friendly technologies for electro-oxidative wastewater treatment has catalyzed innovation and spurred research efforts worldwide. Researchers may explore the use of renewable energy sources to drive electrochemical processes, as well as the development of eco-friendly electrode materials for wastewater treatments. The integration of nanostructured anodes into the electrolytic system for wastewater treatment has led to significant advancements in the removal of pollutants via electro-oxidation. Despite the great number of research articles related to the development and use of nanostructured anodes for electro-oxidative wastewater treatment, to our knowledge, no bibliometric analysis has been published in this domain. Therefore, this work presents a bibliometric study of publications on the designated theme, retrieved from theWeb of Science Core Collection database, which were published over the last decade. The visual and network analysis of co-authorship among authors, organizations, countries, co-citation of authors, citation of documents and sources, as well as the co-occurrence of author keywords was performed using two compatible pieces of scientometric software, namely VOSviewer (version 1.6.18) and CiteSpace (version 6.2.R4). From 2013 to 2023, there has been a gradual increase in the number of publications regarding the development and use of nanostructured anodes for electro-oxidative wastewater treatment. It suggests a steady advancement in this field. The People’s Republic of China emerges as the most productive country, and it is a leader in international collaborations. Also, the United States of America, South Korea, and European Union countries have significant impacts on the research in this domain. The development and application of nanostructured materials for urea electro-oxidation is a main and prospective research theme. This bibliometric analysis allowed for the visualization of the present landscape and upcoming trends in this research field, thereby facilitating future collaborative research endeavors and knowledge exchange.

AB - Jedan od važnih načina za kontrolu zagađenja je adsorpcija, kao izuzetno efikasna metoda za prečišćavanje vode. U poređenju sa drugim komercijalnim adsorbentima, gline pružaju značajne prednosti uključujući veliku dostupnost, a samim tim i nisku cenu, visoku specifičnu površinu, visok kapacitet izmene jona, odlična adsorpciona svojstva i netoksičnost.

AB - Progesterone (P4) has shown promising results in diminishing the effects of cerebral hypoperfusion (CH) in prefrontal cortex. Therefore, our goal was to further analyze the neuroprotective mechanism of P4 in adult Wistar rats following bilateral occlusion of common carotid arteries (2VO). We investigated its impact on neurological function and activity of striatal extracellular purine metabolizing enzymes, CD39 and CD73. Following either sham or 2VO operation, for 7 consecutive days, animals (n=12) received s.c. treatments of commercial flax oil (V, 1 mg/kg) (Sham+V and 2VO+V groups) or 1.7 mg/kg P4 dissolved in V (2VO+P4 group). In 2VO+V animals, neurological deficits on 7th day were evident compared to the Sham+V group (p < 0.01); however, P4 treatment ameliorated deficits compared to 2VO+V (p < 0.05) and showed no difference compared to Sham+V. As indicators of CD39 activity, the hydrolysis rates of ATP and ADP were elevated in 2VO+V group compared to Sham+V (p < 0.01 for ATP; p < 0.05 for ADP) and 2VO+P4 (p < 0.05 for ATP) groups. Moreover, CD73, which hydrolyzes AMP to adenosine, showed increased activity in 2VO+P4 group compared to Sham+V (p < 0.001) and 2VO+V (p < 0.01) groups. Our data showed that P4 might moderate 2VO-initiated neuroinflammation by stimulating the production of adenosine, a potent anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive compound that inhibits T cells proliferation, cytokine release, and leukocyte movement through endothelial barriers. Overall, our findings indicate that P4 could be a fundamental component of innovative therapeutic strategies for this type of brain injury.

AB - The quest for highly efficient, stable, and economically viable bifunctional electrocatalysts is of paramount relevance for advancing in water splitting for the hydrogen energy sector, particularly in facilitating hydrogen (HER) and oxygen evolution evolution (OER) as cathodic and anodic reaction, respectively. In this study, two ionic liquids containing transition metal Fe or Cu, as well as a mixture of these ionic liquids, were used as precursors to synthesize Fe-, Cu-, and Fe,Cu-decorated carbon materials through simple, straightforward, and inexpensive carbonization processes. Comprehensive characterization via SEM-EDS, TEM, XRD, and XPS established the formation of Fe3O4 and Cu2O species. These materials were systematically evaluated for OER and HER in alkaline electrolyte. Fe,Cu-decorated carbon electrocatalyst exhibited favorable performance for OER, including a low onset potential, and reaching 10 and 50 mA cm−2 at overpotential values of 325 mV and 364 mV, respectively. Notably, grafting both Fe and Cu in the material further augmented its electrocatalytic properties, underscoring the enhanced potential of transition metal-decorated carbon materials for OER applications.
