The comparative study of biocomposites based on hydrochar and chitosan-modified urea-formaldehyde resins

AB  - To provide new insight into the field of urea-formaldehyde (UF) adhesives science, in this work, for the first time, UF resin was modified with hydrochar of spent mushroom substrate (HCUF) and chitosan (CHUF) to investigate the effect of these bio-fillers on the hydrolytic and thermal stability of in situ prepared UF resins. The characterization of the modified UF biocomposites was performed using X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), non-isothermal thermogravimetric analysis (TG), differential thermal gravimetry (DTG), and differential thermal analysis (DTA). Scanning electron micrographs (SEM) of the CHUF and HCUF biocomposites show a spherical structure that differs from each other because the surface of the CHUF biocomposite has pronounced pores that form a network structure. With its hydroxyl and amino groups, chitosan bonding to UF resin through hydrogen bonds, which is confirmed by FTIR analysis. The content of free FA in CHUF biocomposite is 0.06%, while that of HCUF is higher and amounts to 0.48%. The content of released FA in both modified UF biocomposites was similar (2.5% and 2.8% for CHUF and HCUF, respectively). The hydrolytic stability of CHUF is slightly higher compared to the HCUF biocomposite. Thermal analysis shows that the CHUF is thermally more stable because it starts to decompose at a slightly higher temperature than the HCUF biocomposite.

AB  - Catalytic materials are the greatest challenge for the commercial application of water electrolysis (WEs) and fuel cells (FCs) as clean energy technologies. There is a need to find an alternative to expensive and unavailable platinum group metal (PGM) catalysts. This study aimed to reduce the cost of PGM materials by replacing Ru with RuO2 and lowering the amount of RuO2 by adding abundant and multifunctional ZnO. A ZnO@RuO2 composite in a 10:1 molar ratio was synthesized by microwave processing of a precipitate as a green, low-cost, and fast method, and then annealed at 300°C and 600°C to improve the catalytic properties. The physicochemical properties of the ZnO@RuO2 composites were investigated by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Raman and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. The electrochemical activity of the samples was investigated by linear sweep voltammetry in acidic and alkaline electrolytes. We observed good bifunctional catalytic activity of the ZnO@RuO2 composites toward HER and OER in both electrolytes. The improved bifunctional catalytic activity of the ZnO@RuO2 composite by annealing was discussed and attributed to the reduced number of bulk oxygen vacancies and the increased number of established heterojunctions.

AB  - We report the procedure for hydrothermal synthesis of ultrasmall Yb3+/Tm3+ co-doped Sr2LaF7 (SLF) upconversion phosphors. These phosphors were synthesized by varying the concentrations of Yb3+ (x = 10, 15, 20, and 25 mol%) and Tm3+ (y = 0.75, 1, 2, and 3 mol%) with the aim to analyze their emissions in the near IR spectral range. According to the detailed structural analysis, Yb3+ and Tm3+ occupy the La3+ sites in the SLF host. The addition of Yb3+/Tm3+ ions has a huge impact on the lattice constant, particle size, and PL emission properties of the synthesized SLF nanophosphor. The results show that the optimal dopant concentrations for upconversion luminescence of Yb3+/Tm3+ co-doped SLF are 20 mol% Yb3+ and 1 mol% Tm3+ with EDTA as the chelating agent. Under 980 nm light excitation, a strong upconversion emission of Tm3+ ions around 800 nm was achieved. In addition, the experimental photoluminescence lifetime of Tm3+ emission in the SLF host is reported. This study discovered that efficient near IR emission from ultrasmall Yb3+/Tm3+ co-doped SLF phosphors may have potential applications in the fields of fluorescent labels in bioimaging and security applications.

Hydroquinone-modified Mn4+-activated fluoride red phosphors with improved water-resistance

AB  - A facile strategy to modify the surface of K2SiF6:Mn4+ (KSFM) with commercially available hydrophilic hydroquinone (HQ) has been developed and waterproof stability (moisture resistance) of the KSFM has been significantly improved. It has been demonstrated that there are strong interactions between KSFM and HQ on the interface due to the hydrogen bonds of fluorine in KSFM with hydrogen in HQ. The relative luminous intensity of HQ-modified KSFM (denoted as KSFM-HQ) remained 99.7% of its initial value after immersion in water for 336 h, remarkable higher than that of KSFM which remained only 38.0%. It is proposed that the high water resistance of KSFM-HQ is achieved via two possible mechanisms: in situ decomposition of dark brown manganese (owing to the hydrolysis of [MnF6]2−) on the KSFM crystal surface and consequently the formation of a more protective Mn4+-free layer. The process effectively combines the advantages of transparent organic materials (herein HQ) before immersion in water and durable moisture resistance of inorganic materials (herein K2SiF6) on surface after immersion in water. The importance of HQ loading on moisture-sensitive fluoride phosphors has been further confirmed by using HQ-treated K2GeF6:Mn4+ (KGFM) as an additional example. This strategy provides a one-of-a-kind way to the development of water-resistant Mn4+-doped fluoride phosphors with high luminous stability for potential applications in water-borne fluorescent anti-counterfeiting ink and even warm WLEDs operating in high humidity. © 2023

Thermal Stability Improvement of Cr3+-Activated Broadband Near-Infrared Phosphors via State Population Optimization

AB  - Technological progress has accelerated the researches into broadband near-infrared (NIR) luminescent materials as next-generation intelligent NIR light sources; however, poor thermal stability restricts the applications of NIR phosphors. Herein, new insights into Cr3+-activated NIR phosphors with improved thermal stability are provided. The photoluminescence intensity originating from the 4T2→4A2 broadband emission of CaLu2Al4SiO12:Cr3+ (CLAS:Cr) with optimal electron occupation (4T2/2E) increases up to 118% at 475 K compared with that at room temperature, which is the best for Cr3+-activated broadband NIR phosphor. Accordingly, new ideas for the design of thermally stable phosphors are proposed by optimizing the thermal population between 4T2 and 2E states and electron migration from 2E to 4T2 state. Finally, multifunctional applications of CLAS:Cr in NIR fluorescence intensity ratio thermometry, X-ray detection, NIR phosphor-converted light-emitting diodes, and bio-imaging are demonstrated.

Predicting Road Traffic Accidents—Artificial Neural Network Approach

AB  - Road traffic accidents are a significant public health issue, accounting for almost 1.3 million deaths worldwide annually, with millions more experiencing non-fatal injuries. A variety of subjective and objective factors contribute to the occurrence of traffic accidents, making it difficult to predict and prevent them on new road sections. Artificial neural networks (ANN) have demonstrated their effectiveness in predicting traffic accidents using limited data sets. This study presents two ANN models to predict traffic accidents on common roads in the Republic of Serbia and the Republic of Srpska (Bosnia and Herzegovina) using objective factors that can be easily determined, such as road length, terrain type, road width, average daily traffic volume, and speed limit. The models predict the number of traffic accidents, as well as the severity of their consequences, including fatalities, injuries and property damage. The developed optimal neural network models showed good generalization capabilities for the collected data foresee, and could be used to accurately predict the observed outputs, based on the input parameters. The highest values of r2 for developed models ANN1 and ANN2 were 0.986, 0.988, and 0.977, and 0.990, 0.969, and 0.990, accordingly, for training, testing and validation cycles. Identifying the most influential factors can assist in improving road safety and reducing the number of accidents. Overall, this research highlights the potential of ANN in predicting traffic accidents and supporting decision-making in transportation planning.

AB  - The main idea of the present study was to investigate the impact of the ongoing world crisis on the socio-economic issues in Serbia concerning building materials usage and purchase. This research fills in the gaps in the literature and contributes to the comprehension of how the crisis has affected salaries, market pricing, and materials consumption in the building sector. The data are gathered through a questionnaire and analyzed using a statistical methodology (frequencies, descriptive statistics, and Spearman’s correlations). Most of the former studies investigated the surveys conducted on specialists in the field, while this study analyzed the perspectives of random people. Socio-demographic issues are analyzed along with materials consumption before and after the crisis. A special emphasis is given to ecological awareness and novel materials usage. Additionally, it captures a broad shift in the economy and ecological consciousness in a developing country. The majority of respondents are open to using novel building materials and products, but their choice would largely be influenced by cost, the amount of effort involved, and their understanding of the advantages. Statistical approaches revealed that the crisis has a considerable impact on the markets for construction and building supplies, altering consumers’ decisions when purchasing. This contribution lays the groundwork for developing countries in the modern world to improve sustainability and adopt circular thinking. Professionals in Serbia need to have a more eco-aware mindset and enhance how they provide pertinent information to potential clients. This study is limited by the number of respondents. For future mathematical modeling and forecasting, more answerers are needed.

On the complexity of the positron’s dynamics in a short carbon nanotube: a full explanation of the rainbow effect

AB  - This paper contains the results of the classical, uniform semiclassical, and quantum mechanical study of the channeling of 1 MeV positrons in a short (11, 9) chiral carbon nanotube. In the classical part of the study, we have analyzed the positron trajectories, which reveal the existence of the primary, secondary, and higher-order rainbow lines. The semiclassical part of the study has been performed with the incident positron represented as a plane wave, while in the fully quantum approach, by a wide Gaussian wave packet. In the former case, only the primary rainbow exists; in the latter, the higher-order rainbows also appear. The evolution of the semiclassical spatial distribution of channeled positrons reveals that rainbow and dislocation points are organized in lines. These points and lines are recognized in the evolution of the quantum spatial distribution of channeled positrons. In the quantum party of the study, special attention has been paid to the Bohm positron trajectories and their finite-time Lyapunov exponents. We demonstrate that the classical, semiclassical, and quantum rainbow effects are complex and catastrophic. These results explain entirely the rainbow effect in the positron transmission through the nanotube.

AB  - We have investigated long-time dynamics of the transverse resonant states occurring in positron transmission through a chiral single-wall carbon nanotube in the channeling mode. This was done by a detailed analysis of quantum carpet, generated by the interference of the resonant states. We found that structure of the carpet depends strongly on the width of the initial wave packet. In the case of the narrow wave packet obtained carpet is periodic and very regular, woven by full and fractional wave packet revivals. Close to every fractional revival additional repeated and inverted reconstructed patterns were observed which do not exist in carpets for a particle in a sealed box. In the case of the wide wave packet, we were able to recognize motifs that repeat approximately, and conclude that dynamics, in this case, is quasi-periodic. This peculiar behavior was traced back to the level of coordination between fluctuations of resonances amplitude and phase functions.

AB  - Introduction In the present study, we assessed the effects of the hyper-harmonized-hydroxylated fullerene–water complex (3HFWC) on Alzheimer's disease (AD) neuropathological hallmarks in 5XFAD mice, an AD animal model. Methods The 3-week-old 5XFAD mice were exposed to 3HFWC water solution ad libitum for 3 months in the presymptomatic phase of pathology. The functional effects of the treatment were confirmed through near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) analysis through machine learning (ML) using artificial neural networks (ANNs) to classify the control and 3HFWC-treated brain tissue samples. The effects of 3HFWC treatment on amyloid-β (Aβ) accumulation, plaque formation, gliosis, and synaptic plasticity in cortical and hippocampal tissue were assessed. Results The 3HFWC treatment significantly decreased the amyloid-β plaque load in specific parts of the cerebral cortex. At the same time, 3HFWC treatment did not induce the activation of glia (astrocytes and microglia) nor did it negatively affect synaptic protein markers (GAP-43, synaptophysin, and PSD-95). Conclusion The obtained results point to the potential of 3HFWC, when applied in the presymptomatic phase of AD, to interfere with amyloid plaque formation without inducing AD-related pathological processes such as neuroinflammation, gliosis, and synaptic vulnerability.

AB  - Pulsed laser ablation in liquids (PLAL) is an approach for the direct synthesis of nanoparticles from the bulk material. In the present work, silver and gold nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized using the PLAL technique, and obtained water colloid suspensions were characterized by TEM–EDX, ICP-OES, UV–VIS, and DLS methods. However, obtaining improved spectral intensity and detection sensitivity are still great challenging tasks, especially for an alternative and cost-effective LIBS setup based on TEA CO2 laser. Considering these demands, this work aimed to investigate a promising approach to signal enhancement based on the deposition of noble NPs on the plastic sample. The effect of NPS on the enhancement of the LIBS signal has been investigated. LIBS experiments were carried out in air at atmospheric pressure and obtained spectra with a high signal-to-background (SBR) ratio. This study shows that signal enhancement can be achieved followed by the lower limits of detection by increasing the ablation amount rate.

Emerging evidence suggests that targeting opioid receptors mu (MOP), kappa (KOP), delta (DOP), and the nociceptin/orphanin FQ receptor (NOP) may yield effective therapeutics for stress-related psychiatric disorders. As depression and pain exhibit significant overlap in their clinical manifestations and molecular mechanisms involved, it is not a surprise that opioids, historically used to alleviate pain, emerged as promising and effective therapeutic options in the treatment of depression. The opioid signaling is dysregulated in depression and numerous preclinical studies and clinical trials strongly suggest that opioid modulation can serve as either an adjuvant or even an alternative to classical monoaminergic antidepressants. Importantly, some classical antidepressants require the opioid receptor modulation to exert their antidepressant effects. Finally, ketamine, a well-known anesthetic whose extremely efficient antidepressant effects were recently discovered, was shown to mediate its antidepressant effects via the endogenous opioid system. Thus, although opioid system modulation is a promising therapeutical venue in the treatment of depression further research is warranted to fully understand the benefits and weaknesses of such approach.

AB  - There is accumulating evidence demonstrating effects of gastrointestinal microbiota on brain function and behavior, including depressive behavior. We have demonstrated that antidepressants, the main drugs used for alleviating depression, affect gut microbiota composition as well, and in this way partly contribute to improvement of depressive symptoms. Specifically, our results showed that several types of antidepressants reduced abundance of bacterial genera Ruminococcus, while supplementation with R. flavefaciens diminished antidepressant-induced decrease of depressive behavior. Treatment with R. flavefaciens affected cortical gene networks, up-regulating genes involved in mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation, while down-regulating genes involved in neuronal plasticity, suggesting a mechanism for microbial regulation of antidepressant treatment efficiency. In further studies, we are aiming to delineate the role of gut microbiota in conveying the long-term effects of adolescent stress on development of anxiety and depressive behavior.

AB  - Mfsd2a is expressed mainly in the endothelial cells and is an essential regulator of blood vessel transcytosis. Therefore, decrease in Mfsd2a expression can be a risk factor for developing leaky blood vessels. Mfsd2a is also the main docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, C22:6n3) transporter. DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid, is one of the main structural lipids of the neuronal and vascular retina, crucial for the normal functioning of photoreceptors (PRs). However, the capacity of the retina to synthesize DHA is limited, and the maintenance of retinal DHA content relies on the uptake from bloodborne lipids. The currently recommended FO doses yielded low PUFAs tissue bioavailability, and supplementation with higher doses has been increasingly recommended. Nevertheless, the effects of higher FO doses on retinal Mfsd2a expression and blood vessels coverage are unknown. Western blot and qPCR analyses showed that high dose FO supplementation increased Mfsd2a expression in the retina. Immunohistochemical analyses of Mfsd2a expression on retinal blood vessels (labeled with 488-conjugated Lycopersicon esculentum, lectin) and subsequent ImageJ analyses revealed 1.32-fold increase in the Mfsd2a retinal blood vessel coverage. In the same time the pericyte blood vessel coverage (CD13+ cells) was not affected with FO supplementation, and the increase in Mfsd2a blood vessel expression is not the result of the increased pericyte coverage. Therefore, the high-dose FO supplementation emerges as the prophylactic fortifier of the retinal blood vessels that can serve either as prophylaxis in the healthy eye or as an adjuvant in developing targeted manipulations of the barrier during diseases.

AB  - Adolescence is a developmental stage characterized by impaired fear extinction learning, which is a significant contributing factor for the high incidence of fearrelated disorders observed across this period. Ketamine is a noncompetitive N-methyl D-aspartate receptor antagonist that targets glutamatergic transmission and mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling pathway, synaptic plasticity mediators known to be involved in fear extinction processes. Therefore, we aimed to explore ketamine’s potential to boost fear extinction of adolescent males, as well as to identify the associated molecular mechanisms. Adolescent male mice (C57BL/6) received an i.p. ketamine injection (10 mg/kg) 1h prior to each cued fear extinction session for 4 consecutive days. Protein expression levels of synaptic plasticity markers in hippocampal synaptosomal fractions were subsequently detected by Western blot analysis. Our results revealed that ketamine significantly improved overall fear extinction learning, as well as extinction memory consolidation/retention. Our data also showed that ketamine upregulated protein kinase B (Akt), mTOR and glutamate receptor 1 (GluR1) protein levels in the hippocampus. Interestingly, we detected no changes in the levels of extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2. These results suggest that ketamine ameliorates longterm fear extinction of adolescent males via hippocampal Akt-mTOR-GluR1 signaling, highlighting this pathway as an important therapeutic target for improving extinction learning in the adolescent population.

AB  - Major depressive disorder (MDD) affects over 300 million people worldwide. The administration of the sub-anaesthetic dose of ketamine, an NMDAr antagonist, was recently approved as highly effective antidepressant whose therapeutic effects are associated with an increase in BDNF levels in the brain. However, lowering the effective dose of ketamine because of its adverse effects is an important goal. We assessed the changes in BDNF levels after the single administration of two subanesthetic doses of ketamine (6mg/kg, Ket6 and 10mg/kg, Ket10) in the chronic unpredictable stress (CUS) mouse model of depression-like behavior in different brain structures. Male C57BL/6J mice exposed to CUS were treated at the postnatal day 70 with either vehicle, Ket6, or Ket10. Following tail suspension test (TST), to assess depressive phenotype at 2- and 7-days post-treatment, animals were sacrificed and the prefrontal cortex (PFC), hippocampus, and striatum were isolated and processed for Western blot analyses. Statistical significance was determined by 1-way ANOVA. Only Ket6 achieved an antidepressant effect that was extinguished at 7 days. Both doses caused a significant increase in BDNF levels in the striatum while neither dose was able to induce BDNF levels in the hippocampus. The increase in BDNF levels in the PFC was observed only 7 days after the treatment and only with Ket10. The increase in BDNF levels was the greatest in the striatum when it correlated with the antidepressive effects of ketamine. Although this increase was sustained for 7 days it did not correlate with the antidepressive behavior which was already extinguished.

AB  - Adolescence is a critical period for neurodevelopment, and exposure to chronic stress during this stage can have long-lasting effects on physiological systems and mental health, particularly on depression. Recent studies report that stress affects the gutbrain axis, leading to changes in gut morphology and motility, nutrient absorption, and gut microbiome, which can be associated with development of depression. We investigated the impact of chronic unpredictable stress (CUS) in adolescence on depressive-like behavior and colon in adult mice. Male C57BL/6 mice were exposed to CUS, including different daily stressors such as social isolation, forced swim, and restraint stress, and others, during postnatal days 28-40. Control mice were housed under standard conditions. Behavioral assessments were conducted during adulthood (postnatal day 70), to evaluate depressive-like behavior. Alterations in mice colon were assessed by histopathological analysis. Our results revealed that mice exposed to CUS during adolescence have disrupted colon, including loss of colonic crypts and significantly increased presence of mucosa and submucosa in respect to controls. Changes in colon were associated with increased depressive-like behavior in CUS-mice compared to control mice. These findings suggest that CUS experienced in adolescence can disrupt colon morphology that is associated with depressive phenotype in adult mice, highlighting the importance of understanding the long-term consequences of chronic stress during this critical period of development as a potential risk for development of depression. Further research is needed to elucidate the underlying mechanisms and potential therapeutic interventions to mitigate the effects of stress on mental health and gut function

AB  - Introduction: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is not cured efficiently and changes of lifestyle measures may alleviate its course. The aim of our study was to investigate the effects of shortened daily photoperiod on inflammation and visual cycle in rat retina and retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) in DR. Methodology: Male Wistar rats were divided into the following groups: 1. control; 2. diabetic group (DM) treated with a single intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (100 mg/kg); 3. group exposed to light/dark cycle 6/18h for 3 months (6/18); 4. diabetic group exposed to light/dark cycle 6/18h (DM+6/18). Retinal blood vessel permeability was estimated immunohistochemically based on lectin staining, while the expression of genes involved in the visual cycle (SOX9, LRAT, RPE65, OTX2), and inflammation (IL-1, TNF-α) was determined by qRT-PCR in the retina and RPE. Results: Shortened photoperiod reduced neovascularisation and the expression of IL-1 and TNF-α in both retina and RPE. The expression of IL-1 and TNF-α genes in the retina was significantly higher in DM vs. control group (P=0.001). In contrast, retinal IL-1 and TNF-α expressions were significantly lower in DM+6/18 vs. DM group (P=0.001). The expression of IL-1 and TNF-α in RPE was significantly higher in DM vs. control group, however the expression of these genes was significantly lower in DM+6/18 vs. DM group (PIL-1=0.008 and PTNF-α=0.002). The expression of visual cycle genes was significantly up-regulated in RPE in DM+6/18 vs. DM group (P=0.001). Conclusion: Shortened daily photoperiod reduces blood vessel permeability in DR via its anti-inflammatory effect associated with accelerated visual cycle in the retina.

Male Wistar rats were divided into the following groups: first group—control group (C12/12); second group—diabetic group (DM12/12; 100 mg/kg STZ); third group—control group exposed to a light/dark cycle 6/18 h (C6/18); fourth group—diabetic group exposed to a light/dark cycle 6/18 h (DM6/18). Anxiety-like behaviour was tested three weeks following STZ injection by elevated plus maze (EPM) and open-field test (OFT). Oxidative stress parameters were measured in the cortex, hippocampus and thalamus, while lipid status and fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) were measured in the serum. Both EPM and OFT showed a lower degree of anxiety-like behaviour in the DM6/18 vs. DM12/12 group. Lipid peroxidation in the cortex, hippocampus and thalamus was significantly lower in the DM6/18 vs. DM12/12 group (p < 0.05), associated with an increased level of antioxidant enzymes and protein thiols in the cortex and thalamus. In the DM6/18 group, oleic, vaccenic, dihomo-γ-linolenic and docosahexaenoic acid concentrations were significantly higher in comparison to the DM12/12 group. A shortened daily photoperiod alleviates anxiety-like behaviour in diabetic rats by reduced lipid peroxidation and changes in the serum fatty acids profile.

AB  - Gamma irradiation provides an alternative pathway to conventional gold nanoparticle synthesis because it is simple, fast, and economical. Here, we employed gamma irradiation at low doses (1–20 kGy) to obtain gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) anchored onto graphene oxide (GO) sheets. GO was selected as a suitable platform for the nucleation and growth of Au NPs because of its large surface area and good dispersibility in water due to the presence of polar oxygen-containing functional groups in its structure. Gamma irradiation at all the applied doses led to the reduction of chloroauric acid and the formation of evenly distributed Au NPs at the GO surface, simultaneously causing the reduction of GO and partial restoration of the graphene structure. As-prepared Au NPs have predominately spheric shapes and the smallest nanoparticles were reported for the dose of 1 kGy. The increase in the irradiation dose caused either the growth of larger particles (5 and 10 kGy) or the broad distribution of particles’ sizes (20 kGy). All samples showed a temperature increase upon exposure to 800 nm laser and photothermal efficiency was the highest for the sample prepared at 20 kGy. © 2022 Elsevier Ltd

AB  - Carbon quantum dots as a novel type of carbon nanomaterials have attracted the attention of many researchers because of their unique optical, antibacterial, and anticancer properties as well as their biocompatibility. In this study, for the first time, carbon quantum dots were prepared from o-phenylenediamine dissolved in toluene by a solvothermal route. Subsequently, the prepared carbon quantum dots were encapsulated into polyurethane films by a swelling–encapsulation–shrink method. Analyses of the results obtained by different characterization methods (AFM, TEM, EDS, FTIR, photoluminescence, and EPR) indicate the significant influence of the precursor on structural, chemical, and optical properties. Antibacterial and cytotoxicity tests showed that these dots did not have any antibacterial potential, because of the low extent of reactive oxygen species production, and showed low dark cytotoxicity. By investigating the cellular uptake, it was established that these dots penetrated the HeLa cells and could be used as probes for bioimaging.

AB  - The quest for sustainable biomaterials with excellent biocompatibility and tailorableproperties has put polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) into the research spotlight. However, high productioncosts and the lack of bioactivity limit their market penetration. To address this, poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) was combined with a bacterial pigment with stronganticancer activity, prodigiosin (PG), to obtain functionally enhanced PHBV-based biomaterials. Thesamples were produced in the form of films 115.6–118.8  m in thickness using the solvent castingmethod. The effects of PG incorporation on the physical properties (morphology, biopolymer crystallinityand thermal stability) and functionality of the obtained biomaterials were investigated. PGhas acted as a nucleating agent, in turn affecting the degree of crystallinity, thermal stability andmorphology of the films. All samples with PG had a more organized internal structure and highermelting and degradation temperatures. The calculated degree of crystallinity of the PHBV copolymerwas 53%, while the PG1, PG3 and PG3 films had values of 64.0%, 63.9% and 69.2%, respectively.Cytotoxicity studies have shown the excellent anticancer activity of films against HCT116 (coloncancer) cells, thus advancing PHBV biomedical application potential.

AB  - To investigate the influence of spinel structure and sintering temperature on the functional properties of BaTiO3/NixZn1−xFe2O4 (x = 0, 0.5, 1), NiFe2O4, ZnFe2O4, and Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 were in situ prepared by thermal decomposition onto BaTiO3 surface from acetylacetonate precursors. As-prepared powders were additionally sintered at 1150 °C and 1300 °C. X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with electron dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) were used for the detailed examination of phase composition and morphology. The magnetic, dielectric, and ferroelectric properties were investigated. The optimal phase composition in the BaTiO3/NiFe2O4 composite, sintered at 1150 °C, resulted in a wide frequency range stability. Additionally, particular phase composition indicates favorable properties such as low conductivity and ideal-like hysteresis loop behavior. The favorable properties of BaTiO3/NiFe2O4 make this particular composite an ideal material choice for further studies on applications of multi-ferroic devices.

Three geopolymers (based on metaphase of Serbian clay, metaphase of German clay and metaphase of German clay plus 10% of carbon cloth) were used. The geopolymers were made by condensing a mixture of metaphases and alkali activator solution at a fixed ratio at room temperature and then at a temperature of 60 °C in a dry oven. Then, the geopolymer samples were pre-crashed to a fixed-radius size. Their properties were characterized by X-ray diffractometry (XRD), Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transform (DRIFT) analysis and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS). Adsorption experiments were carried out under batch process as a function of the dose, concentration of metal, and contact time. The uptake of Cu(II) was rapid, and it increased with increasing metal concentration. The sorption percentage decreased with increasing concentration of Cu(II). The equilibrium adsorption capacity of geopolymers was measured and extrapolated using more isotherms. The data fit very well the linear Langmuir isotherm model. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model can well describe the adsorption behavior of Cu(II) ions with geopolymers samples. These results show that used geopolymers hold great potential to remove Cu(II) from industrial wastewater.
