AB  - Consumption of walnuts is beneficial for cardiovascular health. To study walnut effects on proteins involved in vascular tone regulation, control and fructose-fed rats were subjected to walnut diet for 6 weeks. In contrast with increased energy intake and body mass gain, aortic protein level of L-type calcium channel alpha subunit was decreased and the level of SUR2B subunit of ATP-sensitive K + channel was increased in healthy rats subjected to walnuts, together with improved Akt phosphorylation. Upon the walnut diet in rats subjected to fructose overload, the rise in energy intake and body mass gain, was followed by an increase in blood insulin. Although SUR2B level was elevated, the level of sodium-calcium exchanger NCX1 and inducible nitric oxide synthase were reduced and increased, respectively. In summary, walnut consumption was accompanied with moderate beneficial vascular effect in healthy rats, while an effect of walnut in rats with metabolic disturbances was rather controversial.

AB  - LiAlH4 is a promising material for hydrogen storage, having the theoretical gravimetric density of 10.6 wt% H2. In order to decrease the temperature where hydrogen is released, we investigated the catalytic influence of Fe2O3 on LiAlH4 dehydrogenation, as a model case for understanding the effects transition oxide additives have in the catalysis process. Quick mechanochemical synthesis of LiAlH4 + 5 wt% Fe2O3 led to the significant decrease of the hydrogen desorption temperature, and desorption of over 7 wt%H2 in the temperature range 143–154 °C. Density functional theory (DFT)-based calculations with Tran-Blaha modified Becke-Johnson functional (TBmBJ) address the electronic structure of LiAlH4 and Li3AlH6. 57Fe Mössbauer study shows the change in the oxidational state of iron during hydrogen desorption, while the 1H NMR study reveals the presence of paramagnetic species that affect relaxation. The electron transfer from hydrides is discussed as the proposed mechanism of destabilization of LiAlH4 + 5 wt% Fe2O3. © 2021 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC

AB  - High-k dielectric stacks are regarded as a promising information storage media in the Charge Trapping Non-Volatile Memories, which are the most viable alternative to the standard floating gate memory technology. The implementation of high-k materials in real devices requires (among the other investigations) estimation of their radiation hardness. Here we report the effect of gamma radiation (60Co source, doses of 10 and 10 kGy) on dielectric properties, memory windows, leakage currents and retention characteristics of nanolaminated HfO2/Al2O3 stacks obtained by atomic layer deposition and its relationship with post-deposition annealing in oxygen and nitrogen ambient. The results reveal that depending on the dose, either increase or reduction of all kinds of electrically active defects (i.e., initial oxide charge, fast and slow interface states) can be observed. Radiation generates oxide charges with a different sign in O2 and N2 annealed stacks. The results clearly demonstrate a substantial increase in memory windows of the as-grown and oxygen treated stacks resulting from enhancement of the electron trapping. The leakage currents and the retention times of O2 annealed stacks are not deteriorated by irradiation, hence these stacks have high radiation tolerance.

AB  - Metallic amidoboranes are widely investigated candidates for solid-state hydrogen storage, and much focus shifted recently toward bimetallic amidoboranes. Bimetallic amidoboranes are expected to introduce novel and enhanced physicochemical properties regarding storage and stability. However, these materials are still scarce and mostly grouped around magnesium- or aluminum-containing compounds. We present here a rapid and green mechanochemical solvent-free synthesis of two novel calcium-containing bimetallic amidoboranes, Li2Ca(NH2BH3)4 and Na2Ca(NH2BH3)4, from metal hydrides and ammonia borane. The insight into mechanochemical syntheses is provided by the in situ tandem synchrotron X-ray diffraction and thermal monitoring. The in situ data reveal how the choice of alkali metal hydride governs the course of reactions and their thermal profiles. In situ monitoring of thermal dehydrogenation of these materials is conducted by mass spectrometry and infrared spectroscopy, showing how the course of thermal decomposition varies depending on the structure of the amidoborane, resulting however in the same final products. These new hydrogen-rich bimetallic amidoboranes are structurally characterized by high-resolution powder X-ray diffraction, and they both show potential for hydrogen storage applications: high theoretical gravimetric capacities and low desorption temperatures of hydrogen without the significant presence of harmful gases. Bimetallic amidoboranes are expected to introduce novel and enhanced physicochemical properties regarding storage and stability. However, these materials are still scarce and mostly grouped around magnesium- or aluminum-containing compounds. We present here a rapid and green mechanochemical solvent-free synthesis of two novel calcium-containing bimetallic amidoboranes, Li2Ca(NH2BH3)4 and Na2Ca(NH2BH3)4, from metal hydrides and ammonia borane. The insight into mechanochemical syntheses is provided by the in situ tandem synchrotron X-ray diffraction and thermal monitoring. The in situ data reveal how the choice of alkali metal hydride governs the course of reactions and their thermal profiles. In situ monitoring of thermal dehydrogenation of these materials is conducted by mass spectrometry and infrared spectroscopy, showing how the course of thermal decomposition varies depending on the structure of the amidoborane, resulting however in the same final products. These new hydrogen-rich bimetallic amidoboranes are structurally characterized by high-resolution powder X-ray diffraction, and they both show potential for hydrogen storage applications: high theoretical gravimetric capacities and low desorption temperatures of hydrogen without the significant presence of harmful gases. AB  - The atmosphere is host to a complex electric environment, ranging from a global electric circuit generating fluctuating atmospheric electric fields to local lightning strikes and ions. While research on interactions of organisms with their electrical environment is deeply rooted in the aquatic environment, it has hitherto been confined to interactions with local electrical phenomena and organismal perception of electric fields. However, there is emerging evidence of coupling between large- and small-scale atmospheric electrical phenomena and various biological processes in terrestrial environments that even appear to be tied to continental waters. Here, we synthesize our current understanding of this connectivity, discussing how atmospheric electricity can affect various levels of biological organization across multiple ecosystems. We identify opportunities for research, highlighting its complexity and interdisciplinary nature and draw attention to both conceptual and technical challenges lying ahead of our future understanding of the relationship between atmospheric electricity and the organization and functioning of biological systems.

AB  - LiAlH4 is a promising material for hydrogen storage, having the theoretical gravimetric density of 10.6 wt% H2. In order to decrease the temperature where hydrogen is released, we investigated the catalytic influence of Fe2O3 on LiAlH4 dehydrogenation, as a model case for understanding the effects transition oxide additives have in the catalysis process. Quick mechanochemical synthesis of LiAlH4 + 5 wt% Fe2O3 led to the significant decrease of the hydrogen desorption temperature, and desorption of over 7 wt%H2 in the temperature range 143–154 °C. Density functional theory (DFT)-based calculations with Tran-Blaha modified Becke-Johnson functional (TBmBJ) address the electronic structure of LiAlH4 and Li3AlH6. 57Fe Mössbauer study shows the change in the oxidational state of iron during hydrogen desorption, while the 1H NMR study reveals the presence of paramagnetic species that affect relaxation. The electron transfer from hydrides is discussed as the proposed mechanism of destabilization of LiAlH4 + 5 wt% Fe2O3. © 2021 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC

AB  - Spray nozzles are widely used in processing industry for spreading evenly large amount of fluids. The expansion of fluid depends on the nozzle type, the parameters of the nozzle and the characteristics of the working fluids. The experiments were performed for five fluid types used in food/pharma/animal feed application (glycerol, soybean oil, molasses, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, tara gum), three diameters of the nozzle (1 mm, 3 mm, 5 mm) and three fluid temperatures (40 °C, 50 °C and 60 °C). An experimentally validated numerical model was developed, based on laminar two-phase flow, investigating different liquids, assuming the ideal gas flow, applying the finite volume method and volume of the fluid model with interface tracking. The effects of liquid parameters, nozzle diameter and liquid temperature on the characteristics of the jet were also analysed by artificial neural network model. The nozzle diameter strongly influenced the spreading characteristics of the jet, while the temperature affected the liquid viscosity. The increase of the temperature also led to the augment of the spreading angle of the fluid passing from the nozzle and also the enhancement of the spaying liquid expansion. © 2020 Institution of Chemical Engineers

AB  - Advanced biogas power generation technology has been attracting attentions, which contributes to the waste disposal and the mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions. This work proposes and models a novel biogas-fed hybrid power generation system consisting of solid oxide fuel cell, water gas shift reaction, thermal swing adsorption and proton exchange membrane fuel cell (SOFC-WGS-TSA-PEMFC). The thermodynamic, exergetic, and thermo-economic analyses of this hybrid system for power generation were conducted to comprehensively evaluate its performance. It was found that the novel biogas-fed hybrid system has a gross energy conversion efficiency of 68.63% and exergy efficiency of 65.36%, indicating high efficiency for this kind of hybrid power technology. The market sensitivity analysis showed that the hybrid system also has a low sensitivity to market price fluctuation. Under the current subsidy level for the distributed biogas power plant, the levelized cost of energy can be lowered to 0.02942 $/kWh for a 1 MW scale system. Accordingly, the payback period and annual return on investment can reach 1.4 year and about 20%, respectively. These results reveal that the proposed hybrid system is promising and economically feasible as a distributed power plant, especially for the small power scale (no more than 2 MW).

Inverse problem solving in semiconductor photoacoustics by neural networks

AB  - We developed a method of inverse problem solving in semiconductor photoacoustics based on neural networks application. Simple structured neural networks, trained on a large set of data obtained by the well–known theoretical models in the 20 Hz–20 kHz modulation frequency range, are applied to determine thermal diffusivity, coefficient of linear expansion and thickness of n–type silicon samples, using undistorted experimental photoacoustic signals. The efficiency of the neural networks was tested depending on the type of input data, showing the best performances in the case when signal amplitudes and phases are simultaneously presented to the network. Real–time parameter prediction is achieved together with high accuracy and reliability allowing one to perform the full characterization of a sample in the frequency domain.

The efficiency of the neural networks was tested depending on the type of input data, showing the best performances in the case when signal amplitudes and phases are simultaneously presented to the network. Real–time parameter prediction is achieved together with high accuracy and reliability allowing one to perform the full characterization of a sample in the frequency domain.",

AB  - Drug-induced liver injury (DILI) is a serious health burden. It has diverse clinical presentations that can escalate to acute liver failure. The worldwide increase in the use of psychotropic drugs, their long-term use on a daily basis, common comorbidities of psychiatric and metabolic disorders, and polypharmacy in psychiatric patients increase the incidence of psychotropics-induced DILI. During the last 2 decades, hepatotoxicity of various antidepressants (ADs) and antipsychotics (APs) received much attention. Comprehensive review and discussion of accumulated literature data concerning this issue are performed in this study, as hepatotoxic effects of most commonly prescribed ADs and APs are classified, described, and discussed. The review focuses on ADs and APs characterized by the risk of causing liver damage and highlights the ones found to cause life-threatening or severe DILI cases. In parallel, an overview of hepatic oxidative stress, inflammation, and steatosis underlying DILI is provided, followed by extensive review and discussion of the pathophysiology of AD- and AP-induced DILI revealed in case reports, and animal and in vitro studies. The consequences of some ADs and APs ability to affect drug-metabolizing enzymes and therefore provoke drug–drug interactions are also addressed. Continuous collecting of data on drugs, mechanisms, and risk factors for DILI, as well as critical data reviewing, is crucial for easier DILI diagnosis and more efficient risk assessment of AD- and AP-induced DILI. AB  - We focus on self-induced transparency (SIT) in the propagation of a pulse in a dispersive medium. The latter can be an ordinary optical medium or, more interestingly, a quantum metamaterial. In both cases we consider a sequence of two level atoms each with a characteristic resonant frequency ω0. The propagation features are controlled by the ratio of the pulse frequency ω over the dipole resonant frequency, i.e. on the quantity X=ω/ω0. We consider analytically two pulse limits, viz. the sharp line limit as well as the inhomogeneouly broadened case. In the first case we find that for pulse frequencies larger than ω0, i.e. for X>1 the SIT pulse may be fully stopped through absorption by the medium provided its time width exceeds a certain critical value. In the latter case of inhomogeneously broadened medium we find no such frequency restrictions provided the pulse is wide enough. As a result an SIT pulse can be arbitrarily arrested by the absorbing medium. This dispersion-induced pulse stopping is a manifestation of the quantum nature of the medium and of possible use in metamaterial applications. © 2020 Elsevier Ltd

AB  - Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), an exciting class of porous crystalline materials, are suitable for adsorptive removal of toxic heavy metal-ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (M-EDTA) complexes from wastewater. In this paper, water-stable UiO-66(Zr) with well-defined morphology was successfully synthesized through a facile microwave-assisted solvothermal method and employed as nanotraps for the efficient capture of the three M-EDTA complexes, Cu-EDTA, Pb-EDTA, and Ni-EDTA. The adsorption behaviors, effects of solution pH and co-existing anions, as well as the eluant and desorption were investigated. The obtained UiO-66(Zr) showed good stability and excellent uptake capacity of M-EDTA in a wide pH range (3.0-10.0). UiO-66(Zr) exhibited a higher removal efficiency of Cu-EDTA (57.56 mg/g), Pb-EDTA (120.6 mg/g), and Ni-EDTA (54.27 mg/g). Based on the overall analysis results, our findings show that EDTA-metal complex ions can be adsorbed inside UiO-66(Zr) mainly through the Lewis-acid/-base interactions and possible anion-πinteraction with strong binding energies. Size-matching EDTA-metal complexes confined in the UiO-66(Zr) with flexible geometry would also contribute to the fast adsorption kinetics as well as the selective adsorption of different M-EDTA complexes. © 2020 Elsevier Ltd.

AB  - A search is presented for supersymmetric partners of the top quark (top squarks) in final states with two oppositely charged leptons (electrons or muons), jets identified as originating from b quarks, and missing transverse momentum. The search uses data from proton-proton collisions at s=13TeV collected with the CMS detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137fb-1. Hypothetical signal events are efficiently separated from the dominant top quark pair production background with requirements on the significance of the missing transverse momentum and on transverse mass variables. No significant deviation is observed from the expected background. Exclusion limits are set in the context of simplified supersymmetric models with pair-produced lightest top squarks. For top squarks decaying exclusively to a top quark and a lightest neutralino, lower limits are placed at 95 % confidence level on the masses of the top squark and the neutralino up to 925 and 450GeV, respectively. If the decay proceeds via an intermediate chargino, the corresponding lower limits on the mass of the lightest top squark are set up to 850GeV for neutralino masses below 420GeV. For top squarks undergoing a cascade decay through charginos and sleptons, the mass limits reach up to 1.4TeV and 900GeV respectively for the top squark and the lightest neutralino.

AB  - For the last couple of decades, there has been a significant growth in sequencing data, leading to an extraordinary increase in the number of gene variants. This places a challenge on the bioinformatics research community to develop and improve computational tools for functional annotation of new variants. Genes coding for epigenetic regulators have important roles in cancer pathogenesis and mutations in these genes show great potential as clinical biomarkers, especially in hematologic malignancies. Therefore, we developed a model that specifically focuses on these genes, with an assumption that it would outperform general models in predicting the functional effects of amino acid substitutions. EpiMut is a standalone software that implements a sequence based alignment-free method. We applied a two-step approach for generating sequence based features, relying on the biophysical and biochemical indices of amino acids and the Fourier Transform as a sequence transformation method. For each gene in the dataset, the machine learning algorithm–Naïve Bayes was used for building a model for prediction of the neutral or disease-related status of variants. EpiMut outperformed state-of-the-art tools used for comparison, PolyPhen-2, SIFT and SNAP2. Additionally, EpiMut showed the highest performance on the subset of variants positioned outside conserved functional domains of analysed proteins, which represents an important group of cancer-related variants. These results imply that EpiMut can be applied as a first choice tool in research of the impact of gene variants in epigenetic regulators, especially in the light of the biomarker role in hematologic malignancies. AB  - As an inert radioactive gas, 222Rn could be easily transported to the atmosphere via emanation, migration, or exhalation. Research measurements pointed out that 222Rn activity concentration changes during the winter and summer months, as well as during wet and dry season periods. Changes in radon concentration can affect the atmospheric electric field. At the boundary layer near the ground, short-lived daughters of 222Rn can be used as natural tracers in the atmosphere. In this work, factors controlling 222Rn pathways in the environment and its levels in soil gas and outdoor air are summarized. 222Rn has a short half-life of 3.82 days, but the dose rate due to radon and its radioactive progeny could be significant to the living beings. Epidemiological studies on humans pointed out that up to 14% of lung cancers are induced by exposure to low and moderate concentrations of radon. Animals that breed in ground holes have been exposed to the higher doses due to radiation present in soil air. During the years, different dose-effect models are developed for risk assessment on human and non-human biota. In this work are reviewed research results of 222Rn exposure of human and non-human biota. © 2020, ISB.

AB  - The hydrolytic stability of two nano-SiO2-based UF composites with derivates of coumarin (names as K-1 and K-2) was investigated. K-1 is 3-nitro-4-(p-tolylamino)-2H-chromen-2-one and K-2: 4-((3-nitro-2-oxo-2H-chromen-4-yl)amino)benzenesulfonamide. Two types of nano-silica-based urea–formaldehyde (UF), composite materials with a formaldehyde-to-urea (F/U) ratio of 0.8, were synthesized (UF/K-1/SiO2, and UF/K-2/SiO2). The hydrolytic stability of modified UF composite was determined by measuring the mass loss and liberated formaldehyde concentration of modified UF composite after acid hydrolysis. Obtained results showed that the hydrolytic stability of modified resins with derivates of coumarin was enhanced. The formaldehyde emission of modified UF/K-1/SiO2 composite is lower compared with UF/K-2/SiO2 composite. The thermal behavior of materials was studied by non-isothermal thermo-gravimetric analysis and differential thermal gravimetry supported by data from ATR-IR spectroscopy. The shift of temperature values for selected mass losses (T5%) to a high temperature indicates the increase in thermal stability of samples based on UF resin modified with K-2. © 2020, Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature.

AB  - This paper presents experimental results of dynamic breakdown voltage and delay response as functions of gamma ray air kerma rate for xenon-filled tube at 2.7 mbar pressure. Gamma ray air kerma rate range was considered from 123 nGy h–1 up to 12.3 mGy h–1 in order to investigate the possibility of the application of this tube in gamma radiation dosimetry. It was shown that the variations of the above-mentioned parameters are considerable up to the dose rate of 1.23 μGy h–1, which points to the possibility for application in small dose rate gamma ray dosimetry. Physical processes that make dominant impact to dynamic breakdown voltage and delay response during xenon-filled tube irradiation are also discussed in the paper.

AB  - We report on new γ-ray spectroscopy results from β decays of In99 and Sn101. 30 new γ rays were observed following the β decay of In99, and inconsistencies in the literature with respect to the γ rays following the β decay of Sn101 were addressed with two confirmed cases and two new transitions. The experimental γ-ray energies, intensities, and coincidence relationships are discussed with shell model calculations, where theoretical β-decay branching ratios from the parent nuclei and γ-ray cascades of excited states from the daughter nuclei were combined to generate hypothetical βγ spectra and βγγ coincidence matrices. The most intense β-delayed γ-ray branches in both Cd99 and In101 were well reproduced with this approach, and several γ rays were assigned to new excited states based on their good agreement with shell model predictions.

AB  - Being a member of the nanofamily, carbon nanomaterials exhibit specific properties that mostly arise from their small size. They have proved to be very promising for application in the technical and biomedical field. A wide spectrum of use implies the inevitable presence of carbon nanomaterials in the environment, thus potentially endangering their whole nature. Although scientists worldwide have conducted research investigating the impact of these materials, it is evident that there are still significant gaps concerning the knowledge of their mechanisms, as well as the prolonged and chronic exposure and effects. This manuscript summarizes the most prominent representatives of carbon nanomaterial groups, giving a brief review of their general physico-chemical properties, the most common use, and toxicity profiles. Toxicity was presented through genotoxicity and the activation of the cell signaling pathways, both including in vitro and in vivo models, mechanisms, and the consequential outcomes. Moreover, the acute toxicity of fullerenol, as one of the most commonly investigated members, was briefly presented in the final part of this review. Thinking small can greatly help us improve our lives, but also obliges us to deeply and comprehensively investigate all the possible consequences that could arise from our pure-hearted scientific ambitions and work.

Synthesis, structural and electrochemical characterization of novel ferrocene-containing tetrahydropyrimidin-2(1H)-ones

AB  - Herein, we report an easy performable method for the synthesis of ferrocene-containing tetrahydropyrimidin-2(1H)-ones starting from the corresponding 3-arylamino-1-ferrocenylpropan-1-ols and sodium cyanate (NaOCN) in the presence of glacial acetic acid. The protocol is included an intramolecular cyclization of an in situ generated 1,3-hydroxyurea. The scope of the reaction towards eleven ferrocene-containing 1,3-amino alcohols has been explored and the targeted 1-aryl-4-ferrocenyltetrahidropyrimidin-2(1H)-ones were obtained in good to high yields (up to 93%). All products have been isolated in high purity >95%. In addition, we have provided a detailed structural characterization of the new compounds, which has been performed by IR and NMR spectroscopy. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis was successfully performed on three representative examples, as well as elemental analysis. Moreover, molecular structure properties and intermolecular interactions of these three structures have been compared and analyzed in detail. Electrochemical properties of products were investigated by cyclic voltammetry. This investigation revealed the quasi-reversible one-electron redox process.
