AB - Virtual reality (VR) is a computer-created 3D environment with a focus on realistic scenes and pictures created for entertainment, medical and/or educational and training purposes. One of the major side effects of VR immersion reported in the scientific literature, media and social media is Visually Induced Motion Sickness (VIMS), with clinical symptoms such as disorientation, nausea, and oculomotor discomfort. VIMS is mostly caused by the discrepancy between the visual and vestibular systems and can lead to dizziness, nausea, and disorientation. In this study, we present one potential novel solution to combat motion sickness in VR, showcasing a significant reduction of nausea in VR users employing the META Quest 2 headsets in conjunction with a whole-body controller. Using a neurodigital approach, we facilitate a more immersive and comfortable VR experience. Our findings indicate a marked reduction in VR-induced nausea, paving the way to promote VR technology for broader applications across various fields.

AB - Xenon dual-phase time projections chambers (TPCs) have proven to be a successful technology in studying physical phenomena that require low-background conditions. With 40t of liquid xenon (LXe) in the TPC baseline design, DARWIN will have a high sensitivity for the detection of particle dark matter, neutrinoless double beta decay (0 ν β β), and axion-like particles (ALPs). Although cosmic muons are a source of background that cannot be entirely eliminated, they may be greatly diminished by placing the detector deep underground. In this study, we used Monte Carlo simulations to model the cosmogenic background expected for the DARWIN observatory at four underground laboratories: Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS), Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF), Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane (LSM) and SNOLAB. We present here the results of simulations performed to determine the production rate of 137 Xe, the most crucial isotope in the search for 0 ν β β of 136 Xe. Additionally, we explore the contribution that other muon-induced spallation products, such as other unstable xenon isotopes and tritium, may have on the cosmogenic background.

AB - In 1964, A. I. Perov generalized the Banach contraction principle introducing, following the work of Đ. Kurepa, a new approach to fixed point problems, by defining generalized metric spaces (also known as vector valued metric spaces), and providing some actual results for the first time. Using the recent approach of coordinate representation for a generalized metric of Jachymski and Klima, we verify in this article some natural properties of generalized metric spaces, already owned by standard metric spaces. Among other results, we show that the theorems of Nemytckii (1936) and Edelstein (1962) are valid in generalized metric spaces, as well. A new application to fractional differential equations is also presented. At the end we state a few open questions for young researchers. © Işık University, Department of Mathematics, 2023; all rights reserved.

AB - In this manuscript, among other things, we put some remarks on recently established results by I. Altun et al. on a new fixed point result of Perov type and its application to a semilinear operator system, showing that they can be reduced to the known earlier results of M. Jleli and B. Samet. This follows according to the recent significant paper of J. Jachymski and J. Klima on Perov’s fixed point theorem for mappings on generalized metric spaces. Present approach, therefore, unifies fixed point results in vector valued metric spaces.

AB - The study aims to achieve a simple, reliable, and significant lifetime extension of the high-voltage asynchronous machine in relation to the voltage endurance test. To achieve this goal, the focus was on achieving longer-lasting and more stable insulation of the stator package of an asynchronous machine. Longer-lasting and more stable insulation of a stator is achieved by reinforcing the weak points on its prefabricated multiturn coils. These reinforcements were performed with standard insulating materials that are used for the production of the prefabricated multiturn coils (because there is no data regarding the long-term behavior of new materials that show some better properties in laboratories, but only during short-term tests). With such reinforced weak spots based on prefabricated models, they were made by the classical procedure with the use of standardized tools. To track the effects of the improvement of the insulation characteristics of a stator, an algorithm was developed based on the law of increasing probability and the determination of lifetime curves to the voltage endurance test. The lifetime curves were determined by the method of increasing voltage with the transformation of the obtained results to the corresponding results by the constant voltage method. The applied algorithm that was formed for this study, had been verified with statistical reliability of 95%. The combined measurement uncertainty of the measurement procedure was about 5%.

AB - We use Kramers-Kronig analysis and ab initio calculations to develop a simple analytical method for including the effects of high-energy interband electron transitions in the density polarization function of doped graphene and doped phosphorene in the optical limit. The resulting formulas are suitable for applications in the terahertz to the mid-infrared range of frequencies, where the interband electron transitions are shown to give rise to static screening with a suitably chosen in-plane polarizability. In the case of phosphorene, each component of its static polarizability tensor can be computed from a sum-rule–like formula using the ab initio data for the real part of the corresponding component of the full optical interband conductivity tensor of that material.

This year, within the framework of IAEA – TERC – 2022 – 01/02 Proficiency Test, one of the requests was to measure the simulated surface contamination using the instrument that are at the disposal in the participant laboratories. The results should be reported in the units of counts/s/cm2 in order to be comparable. In this paper, the measurement method and subsequent specific calculations for the simulated surface contamination are explained and the results of the proficiency test stated and discussed.

AB - In this work the crystal rainbow effect is described. Its application for determination of the ion-solid interaction potential, which is one of basic problem in ion-solid interaction, is presented. The crystal rainbow effect occurs in transmission of ions through channels of a crystal. We show that it is possible, by measuring the angular distribution of transmitted channeled ions, to establish a novel analytical method for determination of the ion-solid interaction potential.

AB - Magnesium fluoride (MgF2) single crystal has been widely used as a material for application in optics due to its excellent properties like birefringence, wide range of transparency and low refractive index. As such, MgF2 has been proposed for planar waveguide structures. Ion implantation method was frequently used for planar waveguide production due to its ability to modulate optical properties by introduction of impurities and defects in crystal lattice. In all optics fabrication processes, there are demands for a precise control of optical characteristics modulation and hence the need for precise distribution of implanted impurities and induced damage. In this study, 4 MeV C3+ ions with the fluence of 5×1015 ions/cm2 were implanted in (001) axial direction of MgF2 single crystal. In order to determine the damage depth distribution in the crystal sample, photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy was proposed as a method of evaluation. PL spectroscopy was used as a convenient method for damage investigation of transparent and semi-transparent samples. The cross-section of the implanted zone was mapped with the step of 0.34 µm and the variations in the spectra were investigated. It was shown that intensity evolution of two prominent wide bands with the intensity maximums at about 590 nm and 733 nm can be used for damage depth distribution estimation. Comparing the relative changes of derivatives of the band’s intensities, data related to the damage depth distribution were obtained. Obtained distribution was compared with the SRIM calculation of displacement damage. Considering the difference in implantation direction, good agreement with SRIM results was obtained. As a consequence of ion channeling, it was shown that damage distribution is extended deeper (for about 20%).

All the samples crystallize in a monoclinic Fergusonite-beta-(Y) structure (C2/c space group), with 45–65 nm crystallite sizes and show a strong orange/red luminescence with 5D0 excited state lifetimes of around 0.6 ms. Photoluminescence emission spectra showed no concentration quenching within the examined concentration range. Judd–Ofelt intensity parameters show a slight increase with rising concentration, up to Ω2 = 8.13∙10−20 cm2, Ω4 = 2.67∙10−20 cm2, and Ω6 is concentration invariant with the 0.35∙10−20 cm2 value. Emission lifetimes of the 5D0 state are almost constant with ∼0.6 ms, and a slight decrease is observed with the highest concentrations. The intrinsic quantum yield of all the samples is about 0.5.

AB - A facile strategy to modify the surface of K2SiF6:Mn4+ (KSFM) with commercially available hydrophilic hydroquinone (HQ) has been developed and waterproof stability (moisture resistance) of the KSFM has been significantly improved. It has been demonstrated that there are strong interactions between KSFM and HQ on the interface due to the hydrogen bonds of fluorine in KSFM with hydrogen in HQ. The relative luminous intensity of HQ-modified KSFM (denoted as KSFM-HQ) remained 99.7% of its initial value after immersion in water for 336 h, remarkable higher than that of KSFM which remained only 38.0%. It is proposed that the high water resistance of KSFM-HQ is achieved via two possible mechanisms: in situ decomposition of dark brown manganese (owing to the hydrolysis of [MnF6]2−) on the KSFM crystal surface and consequently the formation of a more protective Mn4+-free layer. The process effectively combines the advantages of transparent organic materials (herein HQ) before immersion in water and durable moisture resistance of inorganic materials (herein K2SiF6) on surface after immersion in water. The importance of HQ loading on moisture-sensitive fluoride phosphors has been further confirmed by using HQ-treated K2GeF6:Mn4+ (KGFM) as an additional example. This strategy provides a one-of-a-kind way to the development of water-resistant Mn4+-doped fluoride phosphors with high luminous stability for potential applications in water-borne fluorescent anti-counterfeiting ink and even warm WLEDs operating in high humidity. © 2023

AB - Using ionizing radiation in treating waste sludge from a drinking water treatment plant is a well-known technique. Sludge treated with ionizing radiation can be used as fertilizer in agriculture. In this paper, the effects of aging on the physicochemical characteristics, the content of microorganisms, molds, acrylamide, heavy metal concentration, and total nutrient content in waste sludge treated with e-beam and gamma irradiation were investigated. The possibility of using treated sludge as a fertilizer in agriculture was evaluated. It has been shown that the content of acrylamide in treated sludge after 15 months of storage does not exceed the limits for sludge to be used as fertilizer. If the sludge is stored in closed bags in a dark place, aging does not increase total microorganisms and molds. The research also showed that the sludge's physicochemical characteristics treated in this way do not decrease under the influence of aging. Finally, it has been shown that aging does not change the concentration of heavy metals and total nutrients in sludge treated by ionizing irradiation.

AB - The formation of the Ti substituted Mg2Ni alloys, a promising hydrogen storage material for various applications is studied in detail. Mg1.95Ti0.05Ni alloy and ribbons are successfully prepared by vacuum arc melting and melt spinning methods. The phases, microstructures, and thermal behavior of the alloys and ribbons are characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, DTA/TG. Sievert-type apparatus is used to study hydrogen sorption properties. Apart from the dominant Mg2Ni phase, the formation of MgNi2, Mg, and Ni3Ti phases is seen in both Mg1·95Ti0·05Ni alloy and ribbons. During the initial three cycles, Mg1·95Ti0·05Ni ribbons showed 2 wt % hydrogen storage capacity. To explain the atomic-scale influence of Ti dopant in the studied alloys and hydrides, FP(L)APW + lo method based on Density Functional Theory (DFT) is applied to Mg2-xTixNi (x = 0.25 and 0.5) alloys and Mg2-xTixNiH4 (x = 0.25 and 0.5) hydrides. An increase in the Ti dopant on the Mg site leads to the hydrides destabilization. Bader's charge density topology analysis provides insight into the charge transfer and bonding between the constituent atoms.

AB - The issue of accumulated seashell waste has been increasingly addressed in the studies of its applicability as a secondary source of calcium carbonate. In this work, the mechanism of the thermo-oxidative degradation of two types of mollusk shells (Dosinia exoleta-DE and oyster Ostrea edulis-OE) was investigated using simultaneous thermal analysis. Physicochemical characterization of raw and calcined materials was performed by XRD and SEM techniques. Results show that increasing powder particle size and heating rate affect the degradation of investigated shells differently and have a significant contribution to released quantities of CO2. It was proposed that the calcination rate of DE powders is determined by the strain-induced collapse of CO2-deficient calcite at its interface with crystalline CaO rods-like structure, with simultaneous expulsion of CO2. A much higher CO2 concentration was identified during the degradation of OE powders, favoring the carbonation reaction and, consequently, increasing the temperature and activation energy of the investigated reaction. Under elevated CO2 concentration, the CaO aggregation step is enhanced by slower reaction kinetics at lower temperatures since both CO2 desorption and structural transformations are probably hindered. The proposed mechanism leads to a meaningful correlation between thermodynamic quantities (enthalpy-entropy compensation) in the form of an iso-kinetic relationship.

AB - This book chapter provides a comprehensive overview of research on the energy landscapes of zinc oxide (ZnO), one of the most investigated materials, due to its great variety of technological and industrial applications. Thus, not only crystalline and bulk ZnO – both pure and doped – but also ZnO surfaces, monolayers, nanotubes, clusters, cluster-assembled materials, and ZnO nanostructures and nanomaterials in general are of great interest. In order to fully explore the energy landscape of ZnO on all length scales ranging from bulk, layers, and nanotubes to clusters, a broad range of landscape exploration methods has been employed in the literature, including, e.g., global optimisation for structure prediction using empirical potentials, local optimisation at the ab initio level, and the prescribed path algorithm, the threshold algorithm, and metashooting for the study of the barrier structures and transition regions of the landscapes of ZnO. As examples of such landscape investigations, doped and pure crystalline ZnO, as well as ZnO surfaces, clusters, and nanotubes will be discussed.

AB - The angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy of isolated silver sulfide nanoparticles was carried out by using velocity map imaging technique at the DESIRS beamline of SOLEIL synchrotron facility. The reported spectroscopy results were obtained after interaction of the synchrotron radiation with a polydisperse aerosol produced from aqueous dispersion of silver sulfide particles, approximately 16 nm in diameter. The photoelectron and UV–Vis-NIR absorption spectra were used to estimate the maximum energy of the valance- and the minimum energy of the conduction-band of the nanoparticles. With respect to the vacuum level, the obtained values were found to be 5.5 ± 0.1 eV and 4.5 ± 0.1 eV for the valence band maximum and conduction band minimum, respectively. The dependence of the asymmetry parameter on the electron energy along the silver sulfide valence band showed an onset of inelastic scattering at ~ 1 eV electron kinetic energy.

AB - Fluorescent nanocomposite films were prepared by solution mixing of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and tryptophan functionalized silver (AgTrp) nanoparticles. Synchrotron excitation deep-ultraviolet (DUV) fluorescence imaging was used to follow the distribution of AgTrp nanoparticles within the polymer matrix. Pronounced growth of dendrite-like structures in the presence of AgTrp nanoparticles was confirmed by bright field and fluorescence imaging as well as with atomic force microscopies. Both tryptophan and AgTrp nanoparticles influence thermal properties of the matrix. Differential scanning calorimetry measurements showed that they reduce crystallinity and significantly increase the glass transition temperature of PVA (in the case of PVA-AgTrp film the Tg increases by ~20 °C). Dielectric properties of the films were studied under two different conditions (dark and illumination). The illumination with 250 nm light induces a significant increase in conductance of the PVA-AgTrp nanocomposite. The relative changes, with respect to the conductance measured in the dark, were almost ~200%.

AB - The problem of unity or disunity of the self is discussed from the point of view of various disciplines. The first part of the study concerns the notion of self-fragmentation present in Human sciences (particularly in Psychology and Cognitive sciences) and its relationship to religious views. The focus is on the narrative self and its fragmentation through narrative practices. In the second part, I examine Jacques Derrida’s work on deconstruction and its implications related to the fragmentation of the self. Deconstruction is presented in terms of formalism in Mathematics. The final part concerns the possible splitting of the conscious self of the observer in quantum mechanical (QM) experiments. Specifically, I consider the quantum mechanical interpretations of ‘splitting brain’ suggested by von Neumann and the ‘many-minds’ suggested by Albert and Loewer. © 2022, Ecozone, OAIMDD. AB - In this study, we have investigated the effect of thickness on the structural and optical properties of copper (Cu) helical nanostructures. Thin films with thicknesses of 160 nm, 280 nm, 450 nm, and 780 nm were obtained by e-beam glancing angle deposition. The morphology and the microstructure were studied by field emission scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy, while for the optical analysis measurements spectroscopic ellipsometry was used. The results show that the deposited structures are porous with nanometer-sized crystallites preferentially oriented along (111) planes, as well as that the diameter of the helices increases with thickness. Detailed analyses of optical properties have demonstrated that the dielectric function of Cu structures is greatly influenced by the films thicknesses. With increasing thickness from 160 nm to 780 nm, the surface plasmon resonance peak was shifted from 1.31 eV to 1.05 eV, which was correlated with the growth mechanism and the size of deposited nanostructures.

AB - Copper (Cu) thin films were deposited by using glancing angle deposition in the form of zigzag and square spiral nanostructures. Thin films were fabricated under different azimuthal rotations (φ = 180°, 90°, 45°, 22.5° and 11°), to the thickness of approximately 300 nm. Morphological, chemical and structural properties were investigated by field-emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. For the optical characterization of the samples spectroscopic ellipsometry was used, while the electrical properties were analyzed by four-point probe method. It was found that as the azimuthal rotation decreases, deposited nanostructures become more porous with larger number of grown arms. Both, optical and electrical analyses revealed that the properties of the obtained thin films are significantly influenced by growth mechanism. By decreasing the φ parameter, the surface plasmon resonance peak was shifted from 1038.9 nm to 1676.6 nm, which can be correlated with the porosity of Cu structures. Besides, it was found that the optical and electrical properties of the thin films are also strongly dependent on the concentration of defects.

AB - The research presents an experiment with a model of an electronic generator for energy injection into the plasma of a fusion reactor. By recording a non-ionizing field in the vicinity of a fusion reactor, it was determined that this field has an extremely high growth rate. At the site of the maximum intensity of the field of non-ionizing radiation, commercial surge arresters with a flexible model of surge arresters were used for experimentation. It has been found that the commercial surge arresters have an efficiency of about 20%. For the efficiency of the flexible model, it was found to be slightly less than 40% (and to be achieved by the application of alpha particle radiation). Since neither of these efficiencies guarantee reliable operation of the gas-filled surge arrester, it was concluded that essential electronics in the vicinity of the fusion generator must be protected. However, since this protection can only be implemented in a fusion reactor, the fact remains that the environment of such a reactor is extremely contaminated with non-ionizing radiation. Commercial surge voltages are isolated for testing since the protection of electronic circuits from fast overvoltages is a critical point for the functioning of modern electronics.

AB - D. Wardowski proved in 2012 a generalization of Banach Contraction Principle by introducing F-contractions in metric spaces. In the next ten years. a great number of researchers used Wardowski's approach, or some of its modifications, to obtain new fixed point results for single- and multivalued mappings in various kinds of spaces. In this review article. we present a survey of these investigations, including some improvements, in particular concerning conditions imposed on function F entering the contractive condition.

AB - Due to the shortcomings of commercial filters and non-linear components for overvoltage protection in the conditions of synergy of neutron and gamma radiation and functional aging, the behavior of the hybrid protection circuit under the same conditions was examined. In order for the experimental procedure to correspond as closely as possible to the real situation, the load of the hybrid circuit was not adjusted by impedance. The standard model of the hybrid protection circuit recommended in accordance with IEC 1.3 is simulated using the software package PSPICE. To that end, it is necessary to create a varistor with appropriate elements. The equivalent inductance parameters were found to be stable in relation to the experimental conditions. It was also established that due to the synergy of neutron and gamma radiation and functional aging, there is a change in the steepness of the varistor characteristic and the tangent of the loss angle in the capacitors. The overall effect of neutron and gamma radiation and functional aging was tested on the hybrid circuit and on individual components. The experiments were performed under well-controlled laboratory conditions, and the combined measurement uncertainty of the experimental procedure did not exceed 5%.

AB - We study quantum features of electromagnetic radiation propagating in a one-dimensional superconducting quantum metamaterial composed of an infinite chain of charge qubits placed within two stripe massive superconducting resonators. The quantum-mechanical model is derived assuming weak fields and that, at low temperatures, each qubit is either unoccupied or occupied by a single Cooper pair. We demonstrate the emergence of two bands of single-photon qubit bound states with the energies lying outside the photon continuum—one is above and the second slightly below the linear photon band. The higher energy band varies slowly with the qubit-photon center of mass quasimomentum. It becomes practically flat provided that the electromagnetic energy is far below the Josephson energy when the latter is small compared to the charging energy. The dispersion of the lower band is practically identical to that of free photons. The emergence of bound states may cause radiation trapping indicating possible applicability for the control of photon transport in superconducting qubit-based artificial media.
