ECG waveform dataset for predicting defibrillation outcome in out-of-hospital cardiac arrested patients

AB  - The provided database of 260 ECG signals was collected from patients with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest while treated by the emergency medical services. Each ECG signal contains a 9 second waveform showing ventricular fibrillation, followed by 1 min of post-shock waveform. Patients’ ECGs are made available in multiple formats. All ECGs recorded during the prehospital treatment are provided in PFD files, after being anonymized, printed in paper, and scanned. For each ECG, the dataset also includes the whole digitized waveform (9 s pre- and 1 min post-shock each) and numerous features in temporal and frequency domain extracted from the 9 s episode immediately prior to the first defibrillation shock. Based on the shock outcome, each ECG file has been annotated by three expert cardiologists, - using majority decision -, as successful (56 cases), unsuccessful (195 cases), or indeterminable (9 cases). The code for preprocessing, for feature extraction, and for limiting the investigation to different temporal intervals before the shock is also provided. These data could be reused to design algorithms to predict shock outcome based on ventricular fibrillation analysis, with the goal to optimize the defibrillation strategy (immediate defibrillation versus cardiopulmonary resuscitation and/or drug administration) for enhancing resuscitation. © 2020

Dispersive properties of self–induced transparency in two–level media

AB  - We focus on self-induced transparency (SIT) in the propagation of a pulse in a dispersive medium. The latter can be an ordinary optical medium or, more interestingly, a quantum metamaterial. In both cases we consider a sequence of two level atoms each with a characteristic resonant frequency ω0. The propagation features are controlled by the ratio of the pulse frequency ω over the dipole resonant frequency, i.e. on the quantity X=ω/ω0. We consider analytically two pulse limits, viz. the sharp line limit as well as the inhomogeneouly broadened case. In the first case we find that for pulse frequencies larger than ω0, i.e. for X>1 the SIT pulse may be fully stopped through absorption by the medium provided its time width exceeds a certain critical value. In the latter case of inhomogeneously broadened medium we find no such frequency restrictions provided the pulse is wide enough. As a result an SIT pulse can be arbitrarily arrested by the absorbing medium. This dispersion-induced pulse stopping is a manifestation of the quantum nature of the medium and of possible use in metamaterial applications. © 2020 Elsevier Ltd

On the long-distance charge transport in DNA-like macromolecules

AB  - In this paper, we investigate the possibility of stable migration of charge carriers over long distances in DNA-like macromolecular structures in the form of an adiabatic soliton and derive the conditions for the formation of solitons. We find two types of soliton solutions: symmetric and antisymmetric. Comparing the energy of both types of soliton solutions with the energy of free extra charge, we find the region of the system parameters in which the soliton states are more energetically favorable than the states of quasi-free charges. At the same time, which of the two mentioned soliton solutions corresponds to an energetically favorable state depends on the ratio of the energy parameters of the molecular structure. © 2021, ITMO University. AB  - The response function and largest Lyapunov exponent analysis were applied to the driven overdamped Frenkel-Kontorova model with two types of anharmonic convex interparticle potentials. In both cases model reduces to a single particle model for integer values of winding number. It is shown that the mirror image of the amplitude dependence of critical depinning force and largest Lyapunov exponent observed recently in the standard Frenkel-Kontorova model (Odavić et al 2017 Commun. Nonlinear Sci. Numer. Simul. 47, 100) is not retained generally. Behaviour of systems with relatively strong interparticle force was examined and evidence for the appearance of mode-locking phenomenon in both directions of particles’ motion is presented. © 2021 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Deep learning-based classification of high intensity light patterns in photorefractive crystals

AB  - In this paper, we establish a new scheme for identification and classification of high intensity events generated by the propagation of light through a photorefractive SBN crystal. Among these events, which are the inevitable consequence of the development of modulation instability, are speckling and soliton-like patterns. The usual classifiers, developed on statistical measures, such as the significant intensity, often provide only a partial characterization of these events. Here, we try to overcome this deficiency by implementing the convolution neural network method to relate experimental data of light intensity distribution and corresponding numerical outputs with different high intensity regimes. The train and test sets are formed of experimentally obtained intensity profiles at the crystal output facet and corresponding numerical profiles. The accuracy of detection of speckles reaches maximum value of 100%, while the accuracy of solitons and caustic detection is above 97%. These performances are promising for the creation of neural network based routines for prediction of extreme events in wave media. © 2020 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Predicting defibrillation success in out-of-hospital cardiac arrested patients: Moving beyond feature design

AB  - Optimizing timing of defibrillation by evaluating the likelihood of a successful outcome could significantly enhance resuscitation. Previous studies employed conventional machine learning approaches and hand-crafted features to address this issue, but none have achieved superior performance to be widely accepted. This study proposes a novel approach in which predictive features are automatically learned.MethodsA raw 4s VF episode immediately prior to first defibrillation shock was feed to a 3-stage CNN feature extractor. Each stage was composed of 4 components: convolution, rectified linear unit activation, dropout and max-pooling. At the end of feature extractor, the feature map was flattened and connected to a fully connected multi-layer perceptron for classification. For model evaluation, a 10 fold cross-validation was employed. To balance classes, SMOTE oversampling method has been applied to minority class.ResultsThe obtained results show that the proposed model is highly accurate in predicting defibrillation outcome (Acc = 93.6 %). Since recommendations on classifiers suggest at least 50 % specificity and 95 % sensitivity as safe and useful predictors for defibrillation decision, the reported sensitivity of 98.8 % and specificity of 88.2 %, with the analysis speed of 3 ms/input signal, indicate that the proposed model possesses a good prospective to be implemented in automated external defibrillators.ConclusionsThe learned features demonstrate superiority over hand-crafted ones when performed on the same dataset. This approach benefits from being fully automatic by fusing feature extraction, selection and classification into a single learning model. It provides a superior strategy that can be used as a tool to guide treatment of OHCA patients in bringing optimal decision of precedence treatment. Furthermore, for encouraging replicability, the dataset has been made publicly available to the research community.

abstract = "Optimizing timing of defibrillation by evaluating the likelihood of a successful outcome could significantly enhance resuscitation. Previous studies employed conventional machine learning approaches and hand-crafted features to address this issue, but none have achieved superior performance to be widely accepted. This study proposes a novel approach in which predictive features are automatically learned.MethodsA raw 4s VF episode immediately prior to first defibrillation shock was feed to a 3-stage CNN feature extractor. Each stage was composed of 4 components: convolution, rectified linear unit activation, dropout and max-pooling. At the end of feature extractor, the feature map was flattened and connected to a fully connected multi-layer perceptron for classification. For model evaluation, a 10 fold cross-validation was employed. To balance classes, SMOTE oversampling method has been applied to minority class.ResultsThe obtained results show that the proposed model is highly accurate in predicting defibrillation outcome (Acc = 93.6 %). Since recommendations on classifiers suggest at least 50 % specificity and 95 % sensitivity as safe and useful predictors for defibrillation decision, the reported sensitivity of 98.8 % and specificity of 88.2 %, with the analysis speed of 3 ms/input signal, indicate that the proposed model possesses a good prospective to be implemented in automated external defibrillators.ConclusionsThe learned features demonstrate superiority over hand-crafted ones when performed on the same dataset. This approach benefits from being fully automatic by fusing feature extraction, selection and classification into a single learning model. It provides a superior strategy that can be used as a tool to guide treatment of OHCA patients in bringing optimal decision of precedence treatment. Furthermore, for encouraging replicability, the dataset has been made publicly available to the research community.",

AB  - We consider a two-dimensional octagonal-diamond network with a fine-tuned diagonal coupling inside the diamond-shaped unit cell. Its linear spectrum exhibits coexistence of two dispersive bands (DBs) and two flat bands (FBs), touching one of the DBs embedded between them. Analogous to the kagome lattice, one of the FBs will constitute the ground state of the system for a proper sign choice of the Hamiltonian. The system is characterized by two different flat-band fundamental octagonal compactons, originating from the destructive interference of fully geometric nature. In the presence of a nonlinear amplitude (on-site) perturbation, the single-octagon linear modes continue into one-parameter families of nonlinear compact modes with the same amplitude and phase structure. However, numerical stability analysis indicates that all strictly compact nonlinear modes are unstable, either purely exponentially or with oscillatory instabilities, for weak and intermediate nonlinearities and sufficiently large system sizes. Stabilization may appear in certain ranges for finite systems and, for the compacton originating from the band at the spectral edge, also in a regime of very large focusing nonlinearities. In contrast to the kagome lattice, the latter compacton family will become unstable already for arbitrarily weak defocusing nonlinearity for large enough systems. We show analytically the existence of a critical system size consisting of 12 octagon rings, such that the ground state for weak defocusing nonlinearity is a stable single compacton for smaller systems, and a continuation of a nontrivial, noncompact linear combination of single compacton modes for larger systems. Investigating generally the different nonlinear localized (noncompact) mode families in the semi-infinite gap bounded by this FB, we find that, for increasing (defocusing) nonlinearity the stable ground state will continuously develop into an exponentially localized mode with two main peaks in antiphase. At a critical nonlinearity strength a symmetry-breaking pitchfork bifurcation appears, so that the stable ground state is single peaked for larger defocusing nonlinearities. We also investigate numerically the mobility of localized modes in this regime and find that the considered modes are generally immobile both with respect to axial and diagonal phase-gradient perturbations.

AB  - We investigate analytically and numerically the existence and dynamical stability of different localized modes in a two-dimensional photonic lattice comprising a square plaquette inscribed in the dodecagon lattices. The eigenvalue spectrum of the underlying linear lattice is characterized by a net formed of one flat band and four dispersive bands. By tailoring the intersite coupling coefficient ratio, opening of gaps between two pairs of neighboring dispersive bands can be induced, while the fully degenerate flat band characterized by compact eigenmodes stays nested between two inner dispersive bands. The nonlinearity destabilizes the compact modes and gives rise to unique families of localized modes in the newly opened gaps, as well as in the semi-infinite gaps. The governing mechanism of mode localization in that case is the light energy self-trapping effect. We have shown the stability of a few families of nonlinear modes in gaps. The suggested lattice model may serve for probing various artificial flat-band systems such as ultracold atoms in optical lattices, periodic electronic networks, and polariton condensates.

AB  - In order to clarify relationship between apricot kernel shell biomass slow pyrolysis mechanism and its main constituents (viz. hemicelluloses, cellulose and lignin), the reactivity effects of main constituents on pyrolysis characteristics were determined by the non-isothermal simultaneous thermal analysis. It was found that four-step (parallel) reaction model is suitable for studying the slow pyrolysis process, within the semi-global model which excludes the strong interaction between biomass constituents (pseudo-components). The application of the proposed model was allowed by the results obtained from KAS iterative isoconversional (model-free) approach. The valorization of the model was confirmed by the process optimization. The complex (cumulative) apricot kernel shell pyrolysis rate curves at different heating rates are successfully resolved into the individual decomposition rate curves (arising from thermal conversion of hemicelluloses, cellulose, and primary/secondary lignin fragments) by four-parameter Fraser–Suzuki function. Besides hemicelluloses and cellulose pyrolyses, the proposed model distinguishes primary and secondary lignin reactions, which enhance the gaseous products releasing (primarily CO and CO2 gases) and charification of the solid residue (increased the bio-char yield). © 2020, Akadémiai Kiadó, Budapest, Hungary.

On the other hand, there is great concern about toxicity in the dark of TiO2 nanoparticles in general. In this work, we have investigated the biocompatibility of TiO2 PNSs of the anatase crystal form (length between 100 and 300 nm and width 50 nm) in the dark with immune cells and light-induced cytotoxicity on several cancer cell lines. The effects of the treatment of different cell lines with several concentrations of TiO2 PNSs suspensions showed the specifics of cells’ viability and the intracellular localization. The results of in vitro studies obtained by cytotoxicity assays adjusted to individual cell lines’ metabolism point towards the biocompatibility of TiO2 PNSs at low and moderate concentrations in the dark, which neither kill the cells, nor induce activation of the immune system cells. Laser scanning confocal microscopy revealed that PNSs are taken up by cells, and insight into the intracellular distribution was obtained in this study.

AB  - The combustion reactivity of plane tree seeds biomass feedstock was studied using the thermogravimetry. The effects of atmosphere (O2/Ar) and different oxygen concentrations (O2/Ar = 20:80% and O2/Ar = 50:50%) on the combustion characteristics were investigated. When combustion atmosphere changes from O2/Ar = 50:50% to O2/Ar = 20:80% (reducing oxygen concentrations), the burnout temperature increases by 29.50 °C for tested biomass. Obtained results demonstrate the ease of ignition of investigated lignocellulosic material for O2/Ar = 50:50% ratio compared with O2/Ar = 20:80% ratio, and the actual trend is maintained under the condition when the heating rate increases. The reducing of oxygen concentration strongly influenced the amount of final residue products, particularly at higher heating rates (beyond 10 °C min−1). Kinetic analysis applied to investigated process shows strongly dependencies of both the apparent activation energy (E) and pre-exponential factor (logA) with conversion (α), especially in devolatilization and combustion of volatiles reaction stages. Large variation in E is attributed to existence of multiple parallel reactions. In order to solve this problem, the deconvolution technique that uses Fraser–Suzuki function was applied. It was shown that Fraser–Suzuki function fits successfully kinetic rate curves of entire combustion process, assuming the best selected nth-order reaction model.

Kinetic friction force in a three-layer model with commensurate substrates

AB  - A chain of harmonically interacting particles confined between two sinusoidal substrate potentials has been analysed. When the top substrate is driven through an attached spring with a constant velocity, the influence of the system parameters on the kinetic friction force was examined in the system with commensurate substrates. It was shown that the friction reached its maximum value when the equilibrium distance of the intermediate particles was an integer multiple of the space period of the upper and lower substrate potentials, which led to the maximum energy loss. This loss can be reduced by the increase of interparticle interaction of the middle layer.

AB  - Quantum droplets are ultradilute liquid states that emerge from the competitive interplay of two Hamiltonian terms, the mean-field energy and beyond-mean-field correction, in a weakly interacting binary Bose gas. We relate the formation of droplets in symmetric and asymmetric two-component one-dimensional boson systems to the modulational instability of a spatially uniform state driven by the beyond-mean-field term. Asymmetry between the components may be caused by their unequal populations or unequal intra-component interaction strengths. Stability of both symmetric and asymmetric droplets is investigated. Robustness of the symmetric solutions against symmetry-breaking perturbations is confirmed.

AB  - A new nonlinear phenomenon has been studied theoretically on one of the main cytoskeletal element of eukaryotic cells, namely chaos in microtubules vibrations. The general model of microtubules is used to draw phase portraits and Lyapunov spectra. The examination of numerical results reveals that the velocity of the chaotic wave could be the physical parameter that governs chaos. The energy released after the hydrolysation of guanosine triphosphate is converted to active turbulence leading to chaos. The high values of the Lyapunov exponents give hints that there are strong dissipations yielding in the lessening of the velocity of chaotic wave propagation in the microtubules. Moreover, the role of chaos in information processing has been established in microtubules. The energy coming from hydrolysis of guanosine triphosphate stimulates the tubulin leading it to probe its environment and collect information. The net sum of Lyapunov exponents is found to be positive in this stage of the process. Also, the collected information is compressed with a negative sum of Lyapunov exponents. Eventually, the compressibility rate has been estimated to be η=67.2%, and 1.11 bit is lost. © 2020 Elsevier B.V.

Calcium ions tune the beats of cilia and flagella

AB  - The cytoskeleton of cilia and flagella is so called axoneme a stable cylindrical architecture of nine microtubule doublets. Axoneme performs periodic bending motion by utilizing specific dynein motor family powered by ATP hydrolysis. It is still unclear how this highly organized “ciliary beat” is being initiated and strongly coordinated by the combined action of hundreds dynein motors. Based on the experimental evidences we here elaborate a plausible scenario in which actually calcium ions play the roles of catalytic activators and coordinators of dynein attachments doing it in superposition with already known mechanical control tools of “ciliary beat”. Polyelectrolyte properties of microtubules incorporated in axoneme doublets enable the formation and propagation of soliton-like “ionic clouds” of Ca2+ ions along these “coaxial nanocables”. The sliding speed of such Ca2+ “clouds” along microtubule doublets is comparable with the speed of propagation of “ciliary beat” itself. We elaborated the interplay between influx of Ca2+ ions in ciliary based body and the sliding of microtubule triplets therein. In second segment we considered how the dynein motors activated by Ca2+ ions contained within solitonic “ionic clouds” in competition with axoneme curvature regulate ciliary and flagellar beating.

AB  - To adapt to changing environments cells must signal and signaling requires messengers whose concentration varies with time in space. We here consider the messenger role of calcium ions implicated in regulation of the wave-like bending dynamics of cilia and flagella. The emphasis is on microtubules as polyelectrolytes serving as transmission lines for the flow of Ca2+ signals in the axoneme. This signaling is superimposed with a geometric clutch mechanism for the regulation of flagella bending dynamics and our modeling produces results in agreement with experimental data.

We here consider the messenger role of calcium ions implicated in regulation of the wave-like bending dynamics of cilia and flagella. The emphasis is on microtubules as polyelectrolytes serving as transmission lines for the flow of Ca2+ signals in the axoneme. This signaling is superimposed with a geometric clutch mechanism for the regulation of flagella bending dynamics and our modeling produces results in agreement with experimental data.",

Complexity of Shapiro steps

AB  - We demonstrate, using the example of the dc+ac driven overdamped Frenkel-Kontorova model, that an easily calculable measure of complexity can be used for the examination of Shapiro steps in the presence of thermal noise. In real systems, thermal noise causes melting or even disappearance of Shapiro steps, which makes their analysis in the standard way from the response function difficult. Unlike in the conventional approach, here, by calculating the Kolmogorov complexity of certain areas in the response function, we were able to detect Shapiro steps, measure their size with the desired precision, and examine their temperature dependence. The aim of this work is to provide scientists, particularly experimentalists, with an unconventional, but practical and easy tool for examination of Shapiro steps in real systems.

AB  - The THz beamline at FLASH, DESY, provides both tunable (1–300 THz) narrow-bandwidth (∼10%) and broad-bandwidth intense (up to 150 uJ) THz pulses delivered in 1 MHz bursts and naturally synchronized with free-electron laser X-ray pulses. Combination of these pulses, along with the auxiliary NIR and VIS ultrashort lasers, supports a plethora of dynamic investigations in physics, material science and biology. The unique features of the FLASH THz pulses and the accelerator source, however, bring along a set of challenges in the diagnostics of their key parameters: pulse energy, spectral, temporal and spatial profiles. Here, these challenges are discussed and the pulse diagnostic tools developed at FLASH are presented. In particular, a radiometric power measurement is presented that enables the derivation of the average pulse energy within a pulse burst across the spectral range, jitter-corrected electro-optical sampling for the full spectro-temporal pulse characterization, spatial beam profiling along the beam transport line and at the sample, and a lamellar grating based Fourier transform infrared spectrometer for the on-line assessment of the average THz pulse spectra. Corresponding measurement results provide a comprehensive insight into the THz beamline capabilities.

AB  - To research the possibility of noninvasive detection of heart failure we developed an acquisition system with multiple sensors. The system synchronously measures cardiovascular pulsations, heart sounds and ECG using different types of sensors positioned only on the patient’s body. The system has a modular structure with five modules: 1. Module for controlling the light source (MWLS) 2. Module for data acquisition from fiber optical sensors (FBGA) with the compact optical spectral analyzer 3. Module for the acquisition of hearth sounds (PCG) with four ports for microphones; 4. Module for the acquisition of standard ECG signals; 5. Module for data acquisition from three accelerometers and three photoplethysmography sensors (ACC/PPG).

AB  - We study nonlinear dynamics of the DNA molecule relying on a helicoidal Peyrard-Bishop model. We look for traveling wave solutions and show that a continuum approximation brings about kink solitons moving along the chain. This statement is supported by the numerical solution of a relevant dynamical equation of motion. Finally, we argue that an existence of both kinks and localized modulated solitons (breathers) could be a useful tool to describe DNA-RNA transcription. © 2019 Author(s).

Temperature dependence of quantum correlations in 1D macromolecular chains

AB  - We investigate the problem of generating quantum correlations between different sites of a macromolecular chain by vibronic excitation depending on the temperature. The influence of temperature on the model dynamics is taken into account by employing the partial-dressing method based on the modified LangFirsov unitary transformation under the assumption that the chain collective oscillations are in the thermal equilibrium state. To describe quantum correlations between the chain sites in the case of the initial single-vibronic excitation, we use two-time correlation functions of the second order and the logarithmic negativity as the degree of entanglement. We find that at certain temperatures for various model parameters time-stable entanglement can occur in the chain.
