AB - Anthropogenic pollution poses a major threat to aquatic ecosystems, which can lead to their degradation. The accumulation and toxicity of metals and trace elements in fish leads to physiological and chemical changes in the fish body. In this study, we investigated the effects of bioaccumulation of metals and trace elements on freshwater fish fatty acid profiles at two different sites before and after the discharge of untreated municipal wastewater in two fish species with different diet habits. Although the concentrations of toxic elements were below the maximum levels proposed by the EU and the Republic of Serbia, this study showed statistically significant correlations between the presence of certain elements and the fatty acid (FA) profile in fish muscle. Lower concentrations of polyunsaturated FA in fish sampled after the discharge of untreated municipal wastewater were detected.
AB - In this study, the concentrations of metals and trace elements (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb and Zn) were determined in the muscle tissue of adult roach and white bream at two different sites in the Belgrade section of the Danube. Twenty-six fatty acids, consisting of nine saturated FA (SFAs), seven monosaturated FA (MUFAs) and ten polysaturated FA (PUFAs), were identified. The analysis of the concentration of metals and trace elements of the roach and white bream showed species-specific differences in their bioaccumulation. Four of all elements analyzed (As, Hg, Ni and Pb) correlated significantly with the changes in FA profiles in fish from both sampling sites, with the exception of Cu, which correlated with the FA profile at the site before, and Zn, whose concentration influenced the FA profile at the site after wastewater discharges. The lower PUFA content in the fish from a site under higher environment pressure could indicate that the fish are stressed. The results suggest that changes in lipid composition may be one of the protective mechanisms of cells to cope with anthropogenic stressors.

AB - Pure and samarium (Sm3+) - or zirconium (Zr4+)-doped TiO2 nanofibers were synthesized by electrospinning method followed by calcination at 500 °C for 1 h. As-spun fibers were smooth, straight and continuous, whilst EDS analysis confirmed the fiber composition and incorporation of dopants in the fibers. Doping with Sm3+ and Zr4+ greatly inhibited the phase transformation of anatase to rutile, by surrounding of Sm3+ ions through formation of Ti-O-Sm bonds and by replacement of Ti4+ ions with larger Zr4+ ions. This was confirmed by HRTEM and SAED analysis. The size of nanofibers was determined to be 133 nm, 175 nm and 155 nm for pure, (0.5%)Sm3+:TiO2 and (1%)Zr4+:TiO2, respectively. After calcination, TiO2 crystal lattice with interplanar spacing of 0.353 nm of (101) crystal plane was not significantly disturbed by Sm doping whilst crystal lattice spacing of 0.357 nm of (101) planes of anatase phase in case TiO2:1.0%Zr4+, significantly differs from the value of pure TiO2 (0.352 nm), thus implying that Zr was doped into substitutional sites of the TiO2 lattice. The indirect band gaps were calculated to be in the range 3.07–3.24 eV. TiO2:0.5%Sm3+ and TiO2:1.0%Zr4+ exhibited higher specific surface area, of 47.1 and 59.4 m2/g, respectively, than pure TiO2 fibers (19.7 m2/g). Effects of Sm3+ and Zr4+ dopant content on the photodegradation efficiency of methylene blue (MB) were studied. TiO2:0.5%Sm3+ and TiO2:1.0%Zr4+ nanofibers have shown the highest photocatalytic activity of 97% and 98% with constant rates 0.01768 min−1 and 0.01939 min−1, respectively, within180 min irradiation under visible light.

AB - Bacterial infections and resistance to antibiotics are increasingly severe problems. In recent years, Staphylococcus species have emerged as important pathogens in animals and humans. Current therapeutic methods against these species have serious disadvantages; therefore new agents with antibacterial potential, such as plant-based substances, are very important in therapy. We report a pilot study with new method of fractioning the dehydrogenate polymer DHP obtained from coniferyl alcohol and application of the low-MW fractions of 200–3000 Da for antibacterial activity in healing animal lesions. In vivo experiments were conducted on the dogs having a skin lesion. Dogs were treated with the suspension containing the low-MW DHP fractions as the active ingredient, in combination with alginate for 7 days. Cytological smears and microbiological analyses of the affected area were performed. Staphylococcus spp. was isolated from lesions in all dogs from our research. The results show that the low-MW DHP suspension in alginate promotes skin healing and reduction of the infection of the lesions in the affected animals. Pharmaceutical composition containing the low-MW DHP fractions exerts a soothing effect on the subject in wound treatment. Reduction in the number of bacteria by 30% and more were noticed in 6 dogs, while in 4 dogs this percentage is above 50%. No side effects were noticed. Synthesized lignin oligomers may have a significant place as antimicrobial and skin healing agents, especially since an increasing number of multidrug-resistant staphylococci are found on the skin lesions in animals.

AB - The material selected for biomedical application must be biocompatible, stable against physiological media, non-toxic, non-carcinogenic, corrosion-resistant, bio-inert, and stimuli-responsive, and have a low wear rate. Lignin is the most abundant aromatic polymer on Earth with a complex, recalcitrant structure. A lot of knowledge is acquired on its pre-treatments and processing for biomedical uses in the forms of hydrogels, films, composite materials, nanoparticles, and aerogels. To avoid the potential toxicity and to control the cytotoxicity of lignin-based materials, it is necessary to increase the purity of the starting source materials and understand their reactivity. The poor water solubility, broad molecular weight (MW) distribution, and highly complex structure of lignin restrict its wider clinical applications. These limitations may be effectively improved by chemical modifications or by using lignin fractions with a narrow MW range. Antioxidant and antimicrobial properties allow lignin to be used in pharmaceuticals, drug delivery, and wound healing. It is also reported as a good candidate for composite materials intended for bone regeneration scaffolds in tissue engineering. Future challenges for lignin-based materials for biomedical applications include achieving a better understanding of the structure, isolation, and batch properties of lignin, as well as structure–function relationships in its applications.

AB - To investigate the influence of spinel structure and sintering temperature on the functional properties of BaTiO3/NixZn1−xFe2O4 (x = 0, 0.5, 1), NiFe2O4, ZnFe2O4, and Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 were in situ prepared by thermal decomposition onto BaTiO3 surface from acetylacetonate precursors. As-prepared powders were additionally sintered at 1150 °C and 1300 °C. X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with electron dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) were used for the detailed examination of phase composition and morphology. The magnetic, dielectric, and ferroelectric properties were investigated. The optimal phase composition in the BaTiO3/NiFe2O4 composite, sintered at 1150 °C, resulted in a wide frequency range stability. Additionally, particular phase composition indicates favorable properties such as low conductivity and ideal-like hysteresis loop behavior. The favorable properties of BaTiO3/NiFe2O4 make this particular composite an ideal material choice for further studies on applications of multi-ferroic devices.

AB - To investigate the effect of synthesis procedure and sintering temperature on the functional properties of perovskite/spinel ceramics, BaTiO3/CoFe2O4 composites were prepared by thermal decomposition, coprecipitation, and microemulsion method, and sintered at 1150°C and 1300°C. The phase composition and morphology of as-prepared powders as well as sintered ceramics were thoroughly examined by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with electron dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The dielectric and ferroelectric measurements were performed in detail. Generally, the samples sintered at 1300°C had better performances than those sintered at 1150°C. The composite synthesized by thermal decomposition and sintered at 1300 °C stands out among other prepared BaTiO3/CoFe2O4 ceramics, owing to high stability in the wide frequency range and low leakage currents. The obtained results indicate that such composite might be successfully applied as a functional multiferroic.

AB - A biphasic [Mn(dipya)(H2O)4](tpht)/{[Zn(dipya)(tpht)]·H2O}n complex material, I (dipya = 2,2’-dipyridylamine, tpht2– = dianion of terephthalatic acid) was synthesized by ligand exchange reaction and characterized by XRPD and FTIR spectroscopy. A ZnO/ZnMn2O4 composite, II, has been prepared via thermal decomposition of I in an air atmosphere at 450 °C. XRPD, FTIR and FESEM analyses of II revealed the simultaneous presence of spherical nanoparticles of wurtzite ZnO and elongated nanoparticles of spinel ZnMn2O4. The specific surface area of II was determined by the BET method, whereas the volume and average size of the mesopores were calculated in accordance with the BJH method. The measurements of the mean size, polydispersity index and zeta potential showed colloidal instability of II. Two band gap values of 2.4 and 3.3 eV were determined using UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, while the measurements of photoluminescence revealed that II is active in the blue region of the visible spectrum. Testing of composite II as a pigmentary material showed that it can be used for the colouring of a ceramic glaze.

AB - In order to further improve the performance of 0.94[(Bi0.5Na0.5)TiO3]-0.06BaTiO3/polyvinylidene fluoride (NBT-BT/PVDF) flexible composite films prepared by the hot-pressing method, the effect of surface modification of the NBT-BT particles on the structure and properties of the films was investigated. Two coupling agents, namely, (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES) and dodecyl triethoxysilane (DDTES) were added to enhance dispersion and interfacial adhesion of the active phase powder with the polymer matrix. The highest amount of the electroactive PVDF β-phase was formed in APTES-modified samples while in DDTES samples mainly γ-phase was formed as shown by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy analysis. Differential scanning calorimetry measurements indicated that the addition of filler particles reduced the total crystallinity degree of the PVDF. Dielectric permittivity values as well as dielectric losses decreased for silanized samples due to reduced tension at the interface between particles and polymer. Strong intermolecular interaction between the PVDF chains and the APTES-modified particles led to enhanced breakdown strength of these samples. The highest level of agglomeration in the DDTES-modified samples induced the deterioration of ferroelectric properties. The highest voltage output of ~15 V and 225 μW of power was obtained for the APTES-modified harvester, evidencing their potential for energy harvesting applications.

AB - For the last several decades, energy harvesters based on piezoelectricity from mechanical vibration have emerged as very promising devices that are being explored extensively for their functionality in energy technologies. In this paper, a series of flexible lead-free BaZr0.2Ti0.8O3 (BZT)/PVDF and lead-based PbZr0.52Ti0.48O3 (PZT)/PVDF piezocomposites with variable filler content up to 50 vol% were prepared by a hot pressing method. The structure and morphology of the BZT and PZT powders, as well as the distribution of the piezo-active filler in the obtained flexible films were characterized by XRD and SEM analysis. In addition, the remnant polarization (Pr) and leakage current were also investigated to evaluate the breakdown strength in both types of flexible films. The calculations of storage energies and output voltage obtained for the investigated materials revealed an increasing trend with an increasing amount of BZT and PZT active phases. The maximum storage energy of 0.42 J/cm3 (and energy efficiency of 40.7 %) was obtained for the PZT–PVDF (40–60) films, while the maximum output voltage of about 10 V (~10 µA) was obtained for the PZT–PVDF (50–50) flexible film. In addition, a comparison between the properties of the lead-based and lead-free flexible films, as well as the potential use of these films as energy storage and energy harvesting systems were analyzed.

AB - SrCo0.2Zn0.2Fe11.6O18.8 hexaferrite was obtained by a “one-pot” green sol-gel synthesismethod utilizing aqueous mandarin orange (Citrus reticulata) peel extract as an eco-friendly reactant. The research objective was to analyze the influence of cobalt and zinc co-doping and the synthesisprocess on the structure, morphology, magnetic, dielectric and ferroelectric properties of strontiumhexaferrite in view of future applications. Structural and morphological characterization usingX-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and scanning electronmicroscopy coupled to energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (SEM-EDX) confirmed the formationof a Co and Zn ion incorporated M-type magnetoplumbite with c/a lattice parameter ratio of 3.919as crystallite nanoplatelets of 32 and 53 nm in thickness and width, respectively. The magnetichysteresis loop of the synthesized powder recorded by a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) atroom temperature confirmed its ferromagnetic nature with a coercive field (Hc) of 2539 Oe and asaturation magnetization (Ms) and remanent magnetization (Mr) of 44.6 emu/g and 21.4 emu/g,respectively. Room temperature ferroelectric loops measured at 100 Hz showed a maximal (Pmax)and a remanent (Pr) polarization of 195.4 and 31.0 nC/cm2, respectively. Both increased when themagnitude of the applied electrical field increased in the 1–24 kV/cm range. The dielectric constantdecreased with the frequency increase, in accordance with the Maxwell–Wagner model, while theconductivity changed according to the Jonscher power law. The complex impedance was modeledwith an equivalent circuit, enabling identification of the dominant contribution of grain boundaryresistance (272.3 MW) and capacitance (7.16 pF).

AB - Temperature- and humidity-sensing properties were evaluated of NixMg1-x spinel ferrites (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) synthesized by a sol-gel combustion method using citric acid as fuel and nitrate ions as oxidizing agents. After the exothermic reaction, amorphous powders were calcined at 700 °C ollowed by characterization with XRD, FTIR, XPS, EDS and Raman spectroscopy and FESEM icroscopy. Synthesized powders were tested as humidity- and temperature-sensing materials in the form of thick films on interdigitated electrodes on alumina substrate in a climatic chamber. The physicochemical investigation of synthesized materials revealed a cubic spinel Fd3m phase, nanosized but agglomerated particles with a partially to completely inverse spinel structure with increasing Ni content. Ni0.1Mg0.9Fe2O4 showed the highest material constant (B30,90) value of 3747 K and temperature sensitivity (α) of −4.08%/K compared to pure magnesium ferrite (B30,90 value of 3426 K and α of −3.73%/K) and the highest average sensitivity towards humidity of 922 kΩ/%RH in the relative humidity (RH) range of 40–90% at the working temperature of 25 °C.

AB - Indigo carmine is a commonly used industrial blue dye. To determine its concentration in a commercially available food dye composed of a mixture of indigo carmine and D-glucose, this paper characterizes it through (ATR, KBr) FTIR micro-Raman as well as UV/Vis and clock: Briggs–Rauscher (BR) oscillatory reaction methods. The indigo carmine was detected in the bulk food dye only by applying micro-Raman spectroscopy, indicating a low percentage of the indigo carmine present. This research provides an improvement in the deviations from the experimental Raman spectrum as calculated by the B97D/cc-pVTZ level of theory one, resulting in a better geometrical optimization of the indigo carmine molecule compared to data within the literature. The analytical curves used to determine indigo carmine concentrations (and quantities) in an aqueous solution of food dye were applied by means of UV/Vis and BR methods. BR yielded significantly better analytical parameters: 100 times lower LOD and LOQ compared to commonly used UV/Vis. The remarkable sensitivity of the BR reaction towards indigo carmine suggests that not only does indigo carmine react in an oscillatory reaction but also its decomposition products, meaning that the multiple oxidation reactions have an important role in the BR’s indigo carmine mechanism. The novelty of this research is the investigation of indigo carmine using a clock BR reaction, opening new possibilities to determine indigo carmine in other complex samples (pharmaceutical, food, etc.).

AB - Bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3) powders were synthesized by auto-combustion method using glycine as a fuel. Doping ions of different valence were used to study the influence on electrical conductivity and ferroelectric properties. Powders were mixed and hot-pressed with α-PVDF to form flexible composite samples. Composites endured significantly higher electrical fields with lower leakage and retained the weak ferromagnetism present in powders. Dielectric properties were improved by doping with Zr4+, Y3+ and Ca2+ as well as the electrical resistivity. Flexible composites exhibited improved electrical resistivity and modified conduction mechanism. Relatively high magnetization of powders completely originates from magnetite particles formed during the combustion, while sintered samples exhibited typical antiferromagnetic behaviour.

AB - Potential applications in wastewater treatment, energy storage, sensors, food packaging, etc. To date, these materials have been synthesized by different chemical and physical techniques. However many of them employ environmentally unfriendly solvents and toxic chemical compounds. To tackle this problem, use of renewable biomass such as plants and fungi as reducing or stabilizing agents in green synthesis has been considered as more sustainable option compared to toxic chemical compounds. These biological substances also behave as capping agent, which control the size and the shape of the nanoparticles. In this work, ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) have been prepared via simple, low cost and ecofriendly method using citrus fruit peel and extracts, Agaricus bisporus powder and extract as biological reducing agents. Zinc nitrate and zinc acetate were used as source of zinc ions. Structural and optical properties were investigated by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), Zeta potential, Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, UV-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy and Photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL). Morphological features were characterized by Field Emission Scanning Electron microscopy (FESEM) and High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM). Antibacterial and antioxidant activity was tested and evaluated.

AB - S and N-doped carbon dots (S-CDs and N-CDs) and their cisplatin (cis-Pt) derivatives. (S-CDs@cis-Pt and N-CDs@cis-Pt) were tested on two ovarian cancer cell lines: A2780 and A2780 cells resistant to cis-Pt (A2780R). Several spectroscopic techniques were employed to check S-CDs@cis-Pt and N-CDs@cis-Pt: solid- and solution-state nuclear magnetic resonance, matrix-assisted laser desorption, ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. In addition, synchrotron-based Fourier Transformed Infrared spectro-microscopy was used to evaluate the biochemical changes in cells after treatment with cis-Pt, S-CDs, N-CDs, or S-CDs@cis-Pt and N-CDs@cis-Pt, respectively. Computational chemistry was applied to establish the model for the most stable bond between S-CDs and N-CDs and cis-Pt. The results revealed the successful modification of S-CDs and N-CDs with cis-Pt and the formation of a stable composite system that can be used for drug delivery to cancer cells and likewise to overcome acquired cis-Pt resistance. Nanoparticle treatment of A2780 and A2780R cells led to the changes in their structure of lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids depending on the treatment. The results showed the S-CDs@cis-Pt and N-CDs@cis-Pt might be used in the combination with cis-Pt to treat the adenocarcinoma, thus having a potential to be further developed as drug delivery systems.

AB - Functionalization of electrodes is a wide‐used strategy in various applications ranging from single‐molecule sensing and protein sequencing, to ion trapping, to desalination. We demonstrate, employing non‐equilibrium Green′s function formalism combined with density functional theory, that single‐species (N, H, S, Cl, F) termination of graphene nanogap electrodes results in a strong in‐gap electrostatic field, induced by species‐dependent dipoles formed at the electrode ends. Consequently, the field increases or decreases electronic transport through a molecule (benzene) placed in the nanogap by shifting molecular levels by almost 2 eV in respect to the electrode Fermi level via a field effect akin to the one used for field‐effect transistors. We also observed the local gating in graphene nanopores terminated with different single‐species atoms. Nitrogen‐terminated nanogaps (NtNGs) and nanopores (NtNPs) show the strongest effect. The in‐gap potential can be transformed from a plateau‐like to a saddle‐like shape by tailoring NtNG and NtNP size and termination type. In particular, the saddle‐like potential is applicable in single‐ion trapping and desalination devices.

AB - The UV-B represents the minor fraction of the solar spectrum, while UV-C is not contained in natural solar radiation, but both radiation types can cause damaging effects in plants. Cell walls (CWs) are one of the targets for external stressors. Juvenile P. omorika trees were treated either with 21 day-high doses UV-B or with 7 day- UV-C in open-top chambers. Using spectroscopic and biochemical techniques, it was shown that the response to UV radiation includes numerous modifications in needle CW structure: relative content of xylan, xyloglucan, lignin and cellulose decreased; cellulose crystallinity changed; yield of lignin monomers with stronger connection of C[dbnd]C in side chain with the ring increased; re-distribution of inter- and intra-polymer H-bonds occurred. The recovery was mediated by an increase in the activities and changes in isoform profiles of CW bound covalent peroxidases (POD) and polyphenol oxidases (PO) (UV–B), and ionic POD and covalent PO (UV–C). A connection between activities of specific POD/PO isoforms and phenolic species (m- and p-coumaric acid, pinoresinol and cinnamic acid derivatives) was demonstrated, and supported by changes in the sRNA profile. In vivo fluorometry showed phenolics accumulation in needle epidermal CWs. These results imply transversal connections between polymers and changed mechanical properties of needle CW as a response to UV. The CW alterations enabled maintenance of physiological functions, as indicated by the preserved chlorophyll content and/or organization. The current study provides evidence that in conifers, needle CW response to both UV-B and UV-C includes biochemical modifications and structural remodeling. © 2021 Elsevier Masson SAS

AB - The aim of this work was to synthesize semiconducting oxide nanoparticles using a simple method with low production cost to be applied in natural sunlight for photocatalytic degradation of pollutants in waste water. Iron titanate (Fe2TiO5) nanoparticles with an orthorhombic structure were successfully synthesized using a modified sol–gel method and calcination at 750°C. The as-prepared Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles exhibited a moderate specific surface area. The mesoporous Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles possessed strong absorption in the visible-light region and the band gap was estimated to be around 2.16 eV. The photocatalytic activity was evaluated by the degradation of methylene blue under natural sunlight. The effect of parameters such as the amount of catalyst, initial concentration of the dye and pH of the dye solution on the removal efficiency of methylene blue was investigated. Fe2TiO5 showed high degradation efficiency in a strong alkaline medium that can be the result of the facilitated formation of OH radicals due to an increased concentration of hydroxyl ions.
