AB  - The interaction of a Transversely Excited Atmospheric (TEA) CO2 laser with a polymer polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) sample in a vacuum ambiance was studied. The main goal was to demonstrate the feasibility of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) to detect hydrogen. The generation of plasma over the PMMA surface, using a low laser intensity of ∼ 48 MW/cm2 and fluence of ∼ 16.5 J/cm2, required the application of a metal sub-target. Besides hydrogen, the recorded spectra were dominated by atomic lines of carbon and oxygen and band emission of the C2 and CN molecules. The electron number density and temperature (ionic, vibrational, and rotational) were evaluated to characterize the laser-induced plasma. In addition, PMMA micro-damages (diameter ∼ 45 µm) created by a multipulse laser ablation could find potential applications in sensor technologies.

Optical properties of zigzag nickel nanostructures obtained at different deposition angles

AB  - In this study, nickel (Ni) thin films were deposited at two different angles (65o and 85o) using Glancing Angle Deposition technique, to the thicknesses of 60 – 290 nm. Structural analysis of the deposited films was performed by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, while spectroscopic ellipsometry was used for the investigation of optical properties. Electrical resitivity of the samples was determined by four-point probe method. Structural analysis showed that the Ni films grow in a shape of zigzag nanocolumns, where the deposition angle strongly affects their porosity. As the thickness of the films increase they absorb light strongly and become less dense. Besides, samples deposited at the angle of 85o exhibit higher values of electrical resistivity as compared to the samples deposited at the angle of 65o, which can be correlated with high porosity and the growth mechanism of the deposited nanostructures.

AB  - Data on thermally induced transformations of Mn exchanged zeolites LTA and FAU topology are presented in this paper. Thermally induced phase transformation of Mn-exchange zeolites are followed in the range from 700 to 1300oC. Both frameworks collapse into amorphous intermediate products after heating between 600 and 650oC. Prolonged heating of the intermediate product above 1100 °C results directly in formation of a disorder Mn-anorthiteLTA and Mn-anorthiteFAU. The parameter of unit cell of Mn-anorthiteLTA and Mn-anorthiteFAU, in temperature range between 700 and 1300oC, was observed in space group C-1. The phase conversions in the temperature range investigated were followed by thermal, X-ray powder diffraction and FT-IR analyses.

AB  - Coordination effects have been considered through the most common interactions in the crystal structures of fluoro compounds (C-H/F and F/F interactions). The supramolecular profile of these effects is based on quantum-chemical calculations for the assessment of the interaction strength and electrostatic potential maps, which provide a qualitative insight into the examined effect. Coordination of aliphatic fluorides leads to an increase of the negative potential of the F atoms, and, hence, an increase in the hydrogen-bonding acceptor ability (strengthening of C-H/F interactions) and a weakening of the F/F interactions, due to an increase in repulsive interactions between the F atoms. There is no significant change in the potential of the F atoms due to coordination of C6-aromatic fluorides, as in the case of aliphatic ones. This results in slight changes in the strengths of the C-H/F and F/F interactions (coupled with parallel interaction at large offsets, PILO), in a noticeable enhancement of stacking interactions, as well as in a significant enhancement of interactions involving the π-system (F/πand C-H/πinteractions). It has also been shown that a decrease in the charge of the metal ions leads to a decrease in the negative potential of the F atom and also that the nature of the metal ion has a significant influence on the value of the potential of the F atoms.

AB  - We investigated the ability of graphene quantum dot (GQD) nanoparticles to protect SH-SY5Y human neuroblastoma cells from oxidative/nitrosative stress induced by iron-nitrosyl complex sodium nitroprusside (SNP).GQD reduced SNP cytotoxicity by preventing mitochondrial depolarization, caspase-2 activation, and subsequent apoptotic death. Although GQD diminished the levels of nitric oxide (NO) in SNP-exposed cells, NO scavengers displayed only a slight protective effect, suggesting that NO quenching was not the main protective mechanism of GQD. GQD also reduced SNP-triggered increase in the intracellular levels of hydroxyl radical (•OH), superoxide anion (O2•- ), and lipid peroxidation. Nonselective antioxidants, •OH scavenging, and iron chelators, but not superoxide dismutase, mimicked GQD cytoprotective activity, indicating that GQD protect cells by neutralizing •OH generated in the presence of SNP-released iron. Cellular internalization of GQD was required for optimal protection, since a removal of extracellular GQD by extensive washing only partly diminished their protective effect. Moreover, GQD cooperated with SNP to induce autophagy, as confirmed by the inhibition of autophagylimiting Akt/PRAS40/mTOR signaling and increase in autophagy gene transcription, protein levels of proautophagic beclin-1 and LC3-II, formation of autophagic vesicles, and degradation of autophagic target p62. The antioxidant activity of GQD was not involved in autophagy induction, as antioxidants N-acetylcysteine and dimethyl sulfoxide failed to stimulate autophagy in SNP-exposed cells. Pharmacological inhibitors of early (wortmannin, 3-methyladenine) or late stages of autophagy (NH4Cl) efficiently reduced the protective effect of GQD. Therefore, the ability of GQD to prevent the in vitro neurotoxicity of SNP depends on both •OH/NO scavenging and induction of cytoprotective autophagy.

RESULTS Our results show that walnut supplementation of fructose-fed animals restored the hypothalamic content of GLUT1 and GLUT3 protein. Furthermore, walnut intake did not affect increased hypothalamic GLUT2 content upon fructose consumption. These effects were accompanied by distinctive alterations of hippocampal GLUTs levels. Specifically, walnut intake increased GLUT1 content, whereas GLUT2 protein was decreased within the rat hippocampus after both individual and combined treatments. CONCLUSION Overall, our study suggests that walnut supplementation exerted modulatory effects on the glucose transporters within specific brain regions in the presence of developed metabolic disorder. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

AB  - Electrodeposition and characterization of novel ceria-doped Zn-Co composite coatings was the main goal of this research. Electrodeposited composite coatings were compared to pure Zn-Co coatings obtained under the same conditions. The effect of two ceria sources, powder and home-made sol, on the morphology and corrosion resistance of the composite coatings was determined. During the electrodeposition process the plating solution was successfully agitated in an ultrasound bath. The source of the particles was found to influence the stability and dispersity of plating solutions. The application of ceria sol resulted in an increase of the ceria content in the resulting coating and favored the refinement from cauliflower-like morphology (Zn-Co) to uniform and compact coral-like structure (Zn-Co-CeO2 sol). The corrosion resistance of the composite coatings was enhanced compared to bare Zn-Co as evidenced by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and scanning Kelvin probe results. Zn-Co doped with ceria particles originating from ceria sol exhibited superior corrosion resistance compared to Zn-Co-CeO2 (powder) coatings. The self-healing rate of artificial defect was calculated based on measured Volta potential difference for which Zn-Co-CeO2 (sol) coatings exhibited a self-healing rate of 73.28% in a chloride-rich environment.

Two different types of ceria sources were used and compared: commercial ceria powder and home-made ceria sol. Electrodeposition was performed by a direct current in the range of 1–8 A dm−2. Two different agitation modes were used and compared, magnetic stirring and ultrasound-assisted stirring (US). The influence of magnetic stirring on the stability of the related plating baths was evaluated via a dynamic scattering method. The results pointed to better stability of the prepared ceria sol. The morphology of the composite coatings was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and particle content was determined by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The results showed that the increase in the deposition current density was not beneficial to the coating morphology and particle content. The corrosion behavior of the Zn-Co-CeO2 composite coatings was analyzed and compared by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and polarization resistance. The ultrasound-assisted electrodeposition at small current densities was favorable for obtaining composite coatings with enhanced corrosion stability. The protection was more effective when US was applied and, additionally, upon utilization of ceria sol as a particle source, which was revealed by higher polarization resistance and greater low-frequency impedance modulus values for sol-derived composite coatings deposited under ultrasound.

AB  - Persistent microbial contamination of medical implant surfaces is becoming a serious threat to public health. This is principally due to antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains and the formation of bacterial biofilms. The development of novel antibacterial materials that will effectively fight both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and prevent biofilm formation represents a big challenge for researchers in the last few decades. In the present work, we report an antibacterial hydrophobic carbon quantum dots/polyurethane nanocomposite (hCQD-PU), with enhanced antibacterial properties induced by pre-treatment with gamma-irradiation. Hydrophobic quantum dots (hCQDs), which are capable of generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) upon irradiation with low-power blue light (470 nm), have been integrated into the polyurethane (PU) polymer matrix to form a photoactive nanocomposite. To modify its physical and chemical properties and improve its antibacterial efficacy, various doses of gamma irradiation (1, 10, and 200 kGy) in the air environment were applied to the formed nanocomposite. Gamma-irradiation pre-treatment significantly influenced the rise in ROS production, therefore, the prooxidative activity under the blue-light illumination of hCQD-PU was also significantly improved. The best antibacterial activity was demonstrated by the hCQD-PU nanocomposite irradiated with a dose of 200 kGy, with the complete eradication of Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Gram-negative Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria after 15 min of exposure to the blue lamp. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd

Novel cordierite-acicular mullite composite for diesel particulate filters

AB  - Cordierite-acicular mullite composites containing 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 wt% of mullite were fabricated from waste MoSi2 and commercial powders of Al2O3 and spinel (MgAl2O4). Careful oxidation of pulverised waste MoSi2 rendered a precursor mixture of MoO3 and amorphous SiO2, which served as pore forming agent and SiO2 source, respectively. Evaporation of MoO3 at ∼750 °C allowed production of highly porous cordierite-mullite ceramic composite after sintering in air at 1350 °C for 4 h. The combination of equiaxed cordierite grains and elongated (prism-like) mullite grains, resulted in unique microstructure with open porosity between 53.3 and 55.6 vol% which makes the obtained composite convenient for application as diesel particulate filter material. The presence of mullite affected four key thermo-mechanical properties which determine the thermal shock resistance of cordierite-mullite composite. The best thermal shock resistance was measured in composite containing 75 wt% of mullite. It was a result of improved thermal conductivity (1.081 W/mK) and bending strength (3.62 MPa) and relatively low values of coefficient of thermal expansion (3.8 × 10−6 K−1) and elastic modulus (2.27 GPa).

abstract = "Cordierite-acicular mullite composites containing 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 wt% of mullite were fabricated from waste MoSi2 and commercial powders of Al2O3 and spinel (MgAl2O4). Careful oxidation of pulverised waste MoSi2 rendered a precursor mixture of MoO3 and amorphous SiO2, which served as pore forming agent and SiO2 source, respectively. Evaporation of MoO3 at ∼750 °C allowed production of highly porous cordierite-mullite ceramic composite after sintering in air at 1350 °C for 4 h. The combination of equiaxed cordierite grains and elongated (prism-like) mullite grains, resulted in unique microstructure with open porosity between 53.3 and 55.6 vol% which makes the obtained composite convenient for application as diesel particulate filter material. The presence of mullite affected four key thermo-mechanical properties which determine the thermal shock resistance of cordierite-mullite composite. The best thermal shock resistance was measured in composite containing 75 wt% of mullite. It was a result of improved thermal conductivity (1.081 W/mK) and bending strength (3.62 MPa) and relatively low values of coefficient of thermal expansion (3.8 × 10−6 K−1) and elastic modulus (2.27 GPa).",

AB  - Efficient  exploitation of  the industrial components at elevated temperatures and  in  aggressive  environments  is  demanded  in  modern  industrial  production.  The  Ti3Al-based  alloys  are  proposed  as  materials  that  can  meet  these  demands  since  it  is  determined  that  improved  high- temperature  corrosion  resistance  of  industrial  construction  materials  is  often  more  significant  for  industrial exploitation than the improvement of their mechanical properties. Therefore, the aim of the  present  research  was  to  determine  the  effect  of  various  parameters,  i.e.  initial  microstructure  and  high-temperature processing conditions, on the cyclic oxidation kinetics of the Ti3Al-based alloy with  the Ti-24Al-11Nb (at.%) composition. Cyclic oxidation tests were conducted in air at 600 and 900 oC.  The oxidation process was monitored up to 120 h by recording mass gain data as a function of time to  define  the  kinetic  models.  Examination  of  alloy  microstructure  and  alloy  degradation  during  the  cyclic oxidation  was  undertaken  using light microscopy  (LM),  scanning electron microscopy  (SEM),  energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Alloy hot-rolled at 1050 oC and  hot-rolled  alloy  subsequently  thermally  treated  at  1200  oC  were  examined  before  and  after  cyclic  high-temperature  oxidation.  Obtained  results  indicated  that  the  initial  alloy  microstructure  has  a  significant  influence  on  its  high-temperature  oxidation  behavior.  Namely,  hot-rolled  alloy  thermally  treated at 1200 oC with a higher volume fraction of the β phase in the microstructure shows improved  oxidation  resistance  compared  to  the  alloy  only  hot-rolled  at  1050  oC.  An  increase  in  oxidation  temperature  caused  the  progress  in  alloy  degradation.  In  contrast  to  the  compact  external  layer  formed  at  the  alloy  surface  after  cyclic  oxidation  at  600  oC,  during  cyclic  oxidation  at  900  oC  formation  of  a  multi-layer  scale  was  observed.  The  main  products  of  oxidation are  Al2O3  and  TiO2.  Kinetic models of the Ti-24Al-11Nb (at.%) alloy cyclic oxidation at 600 oC and 900 oC in the air are  defined with linear and parabolic oxidation curves for most of the examined conditions.

AB  - Data about the dynamics of noradrenaline (NA) transmission, storage and degradation may be very important for understanding the reduction of functional deficiency of NA and maintaining the stability of NA levels in animals with depressive-like behavior treated with lithium. This study aimed to investigate the effects of mood stabilizer lithium on concentrations of NA in the prefrontal cortex (PFC), as well as behavior rats exposed to chronic restraint stress (CRS). In addition, this study examined the effects of lithium on protein levels of noradrenaline transporter (NET), vesicular monoamine transporter 2 (VMAT2) and catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT), as well as the enzyme activity of monoamine oxidase A (MOA) in the PFC of chronically stressed rats. METHODS: The investigated parameters were quantified by Western blot analysis, CAT Research ELISA kits, and an assay of enzyme activity. Also, the forced swim test (FST) was used to assess the behavior of animals. RESULTS: We found that lithium treatment decreased high protein levels of NET and VMAT2, as well as the enzyme activity of MOA in chronically stressed rats to the levels found in unstressed animals. In addition, lithium treatment decreased the concentration of NA (24%) and immobility in animals exposed to CRS. CONCLUSION: Our data confirm that lithium-induced modulation of prefrontal noradrenergic turnover and stabilized the behavior of chronically stressed rats.

Selected polyoxopalladates as promising and selective antitumor drug candidates

AB  - Polyoxo-noble-metalates (PONMs), a class of molecular noble metal-oxo nanoclusters that combine features of both polyoxometalates and noble metals, are a promising platform for the development of next-generation antitumor metallodrugs. This study aimed to evaluate the antitumor potential against human neuroblastoma cells (SH-SY5Y), as well as toxicity towards healthy human peripheral blood cells (HPBCs), of five polyoxopalladates(II): (Na8[Pd13As8O34(OH)6]·42H2O (Pd13), Na4[SrPd12O6(OH)3(PhAsO3)6(OAc)3]·2NaOAc·32H2O (SrPd12), Na6[Pd13(AsPh)8O32]·23H2O (Pd13L), Na12[SnO8Pd12(PO4)8]·43H2O (SnPd12), and Na12[PbO8Pd12(PO4)8]·38H2O (PbPd12)), as the largest subset of PONMs. A pure inorganic, Pd13, was found as the most potent and selective antineuroblastoma agent with IC50 values (µM) of 7.2 ± 2.2 and 4.4 ± 1.2 for 24 and 48 h treatment, respectively, even lower than cisplatin (28.4 ± 7.4 and 11.6 ± 0.8). The obtained IC50 values (µM) for 24/48 h treatment with SrPd12 and Pd13L were 75.8 ± 6.7/76.7 ± 22.9 and 63.8 ± 3.6/21.4 ± 10.8, respectively, whereas SnPd12 and PbPd12 did not remarkably affect the SH-SY5Y viability (IC50 > > 100 µM). Pd13 caused depolarisation of inner mitochondrial membrane prior to superoxide ion hyperproduction, followed by caspase activation, DNA fragmentation and cell cycle arrest, all hallmarks of apoptotic cell death, and accompanied by an increase in acidic vesicles content, suggestive of autophagy induction. Importantly, Pd13 demonstrated the antitumor effect at concentrations not cytogenotoxic for normal HPBCs. On the contrary, SrPd12 and Pd13L at concentrations ≥ 1/3 IC50 (24 h) decreased HPBC viability and increased % tail DNA up to 42% and 3.05 times, respectively, related to control. SnPd12 and PbPd12, previously confirmed promising antileukemic agents, did not exhibit cytogenotoxicity to HPBCs, and thus could be regarded as tumor cell specific and selective drug candidates.

AB  - The toxicity of hybrid nanoparticles, consisting of non-toxic components, zirconium dioxide nanoparticles (ZrO2 NPs), and caffeic acid (CA), was examined against four different cell lines (HTR-8 SV/Neo, JEG-3, JAR, and HeLa). Stable aqueous ZrO2 sol, synthesized by forced hydrolysis, consists of 3–4 nm in size primary particles organized in 30–60 nm in size snowflake-like particles, as determined by transmission electron microscopy and direct light scattering measurements. The surface modification of ZrO2 NPs with CA leads to the formation of an interfacial charge transfer (ICT) complex followed by the appearance of absorption in the visible spectral range. The spectroscopic observations are complemented with the density functional theory calculations using a cluster model. The ZrO2 NPs and CA are non-toxic against four different cell lines in investigated concentration range. Also, ZrO2 NPs promote the proliferation of HTR-8 SV/Neo, JAR, and HeLa cells. On the other hand, hybrid ZrO2/CA NPs induced a significant reduction of the viability of the JEG-3 cells (39 %) for the high concentration of components (1.6 mM ZrO2 and 0.4 mM CA).

The 3d3 electron configuration of the Cr3+ ion results in the deep-red emission from optical transitions between d-d orbitals. Two overlapping emissions from the Cr3+ spin-forbidden 2Eg→ 4A2g and the spin-allowed 4T2g→ 4A2g electronic transitions are influenced by the strong crystal field in Mg2SiO4 and, thus, are suitable for ratiometric luminescence thermometry. The temperature-induced changes in Cr3+-doped Mg2SiO4 emission are tested for use in luminescence thermometry from cryogenic to physiologically relevant temperatures (10-350 K) by three approaches: (a) temperature-induced changes of emission intensity; (b) temperature-dependent luminescence lifetime; and (c) temperature-induced changes of emission band position. The second approach offers applicable thermometry at cryogenic temperatures, starting from temperatures as low as 50 K, while all three approaches offer applicable thermometry at physiologically relevant temperatures with relative sensitivities of 0.7% K-1 for emission intensity, 0.8% K-1 for lifetime and 0.85% K-1 for band position at 310 K. © 2021 IOP Publishing Ltd.

AB  - Interventional procedures in radiology and cardiology are associated with high dose to the patient. Accurate dosimetry is essential and calibration of the equipment is a means to provide the necessary accuracy of dose assessment. The objective of this work is to investigate the performance of dosimeters used in interventional procedures in different standard and non-standard X-ray radiation qualities, and to investigate potential uncertainties related to dose measurements, thus improving accuracy of patient dosimetry in interventional procedures. Four new reference radiation qualities dedicated to interventional cardiology applications have been established, allowing calibration of dosimeters used in clinical conditions with appropriate traceability to primary standards. Testing of solid-state semiconductor detectors and thermoluminescent dosimeter properties, e.g. influence of photon energy, angle of incidence and dose rate, was performed in the standard and non-standard radiation qualities. Both dosimeter types showed good performance in the non-standard beams during all performance tests. Solid-state dosimeters displayed weak dependence on energy, angle of incidence and dose rate, in the range defined by the manufacturer and requirements of the international standard. Thermoluminescent dosimeters displayed excellent linearity and angular dependence. The influence of energy dependence on measurement uncertainty can be reduced if appropriate radiation quality is selected for calibration. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd

AB  - Archeological mortars are often composed of highly inhomogeneous materials and detailed analysis in most cases can be quite difficult. In this work, a Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) equipment with microscopic-scale spatial resolution was used to image the distribution of elements on real archeological samples of mortars and construction material used in the foundations of the Smederevo Fortress (Republic of Serbia). A double-pulse Nd:YAG at the fundamental wavelength (λ = 1064 nm) and a CCD spectrometer coupled with a commercial microscope were used to generate the plasma and acquire the LIBS spectra. Thanks to the combined use of an unsupervised clustering algorithm and the calibration-free procedure, the results obtained show that it is possible to obtain a good discrimination between materials of different composition, allowing a quick classification for further mineral-petrographic investigations.

AB  - Metal acetate complexes are highly interesting in designing and synthesizing metal–organic frameworks, which have potential applications in gas storage, molecular sieves, ion exchange, and catalysis. Cadmium is well recognized as an industrial pollutant and a food contaminant that severely affects human health. For these reasons, the detection and analysis of Cd are of great interest. A major challenge in studying cadmium compounds' structure is that Cd2+ can have a wide range of coordination numbers and diverse geometries. (MA)LDI is extremely useful for detecting Cd(OAc)2·2H2O and investigating Cd's complex and flexible nature. We applied LDI to detect and characterize the Cd-related clusters and MALDI approach to investigate the Cd(OAc)2x2H2O reactivity and detectability with the five different organic matrices. The results revealed that in the solid-state Cd(OAc)2x2H2O tend to form coordination polymers, and in the presence of coordinating ligands (matrix molecules) form smaller complexes. In addition, the correlation between Cd-related LOD and matrix features was observed and discussed, indicating that the LODs of this analyte strongly depend on the optical absorption of the matrix-analyte adduct.

The effects of low‐intensity exercise on cardiac glycogenesis and glycolysis in male and ovariectomized female rats on a fructose‐rich diet

AB  - We previously reported that low-intensity exercise prevented cardiac insulin resistance induced by a fructose-rich diet (FRD). To examine whether low-intensity exercise could prevent the disturbances of key molecules of cardiac glucose metabolism induced by FRD in male and ovariectomized (ovx) female rats, animals were exposed to 10% fructose solution (SF) or underwent both fructose diet and exercise (EF). Exercise prevented a decrease in cardiac GSK-3β phosphorylation induced by FRD in males (p <.001 vs. SF). It also prevented a decrease in PFK-2 phosphorylation in ovx females (p <.001 vs. SF) and increased the expression of PFK-2 in males (p <.05 vs. control). Exercise did not prevent a decrease in plasma membrane GLUT1 and GLUT4 levels in ovx females on FRD. The only effect of exercise on glucose transporters that could be indicated as beneficial is an augmented GLUT4 protein expression in males (p <.05 vs. control). Obtained results suggest that low-intensity exercise prevents harmful effects of FRD towards cardiac glycogenesis in males and glycolysis in ovx females. Practical applications: Low-intensity exercise, equivalent to brisk walking, was able to prevent disturbances in cardiac glycolysis regulation in ovx female and the glycogen synthesis pathway in male rats. In terms of human health, although molecular mechanisms of beneficial effects of exercise on cardiac glucose metabolism vary between genders, low-intensity running may be a useful non-pharmacological approach in the prevention of cardiac metabolic disorders in both men and postmenopausal women. © 2021 Wiley Periodicals LLC.

AB  - Electrochemical sensors play a significant role in detecting chemical ions, molecules, and pathogens in water and other applications. These sensors are sensitive, portable, fast, inexpensive, and suitable for online and in-situ measurements compared to other methods. They can provide the detection for any compound that can undergo certain transformations within a potential window. It enables applications in multiple ion detection, mainly since these sensors are primarily non-specific. In this paper, we provide a survey of electrochemical sensors for the detection of water contaminants, i.e., pesticides, nitrate, nitrite, phosphorus, water hardeners, disinfectant, and other emergent contaminants (phenol, estrogen, gallic acid etc.). We focus on the influence of surface modification of the working electrodes by carbon nanomaterials, metallic nanostructures, imprinted polymers and evaluate the corresponding sensing performance. Especially for pesticides, which are challenging and need special care, we highlight biosensors, such as enzymatic sensors, immunobiosensor, aptasensors, and biomimetic sensors. We discuss the sensors’ overall performance, especially concerning real-sample performance and the capability for actual field application.

AB  - The efficient, selective, and economical sorbents for the removal of Sr radionuclides are largely needed for the decontamination of effluents with high salinity. In this study, the removal of Sr was investigated using the zeolite produced from the Bayer process liquids. Based on the XRD, SEM/EDS analysis, the product was pure and highly crystalline zeolite 4A (Z4A). Removal of Sr was fast (5 min for 100% removal at 8.80 mg/L), with high maximum sorption capacity (252.5 mg/L), and independent on the initial pH in the range 3.5–9.0. Specific sorption of Sr by protonated groups on the Z4A surface was operating in addition to ion-exchange with Na ions. The selectivity of Z4A decreased in the order Sr > Ca > K > Mg > Na. 84% of Sr was separated from seawater within 5 min, at the Z4A dose of 5 g/L, while efficiency increased to 99% using the dose of 20 g/L. Desorption of radioisotope 89 Sr from seawater/Z4A solid residue was very low in deionized water (0.1–0.2%) and groundwater (0.7%) during 60 days of leaching. Z4A is a cost-effective, selective, and high-capacity medium for Sr removal, which provides high stability of retained radionuclides.

AB  - Nowadays, a larger number of aggressive and corrosive chemical reagents as well as toxic solvents are used to achieve structural modification and cleaning of the final products. These lead to the production of residual, waste chemicals, which are often reactive, cancerogenic, and toxic to the environment. This study shows a new approach to the modification of graphene quantum dots (GQDs) using gamma irradiation where the usage of reagents was avoided. We achieved the incorporation of S and N atoms in the GQD structure by selecting an aqueous solution of L-cysteine as an irradiation medium. GQDs were exposed to gamma-irradiation at doses of 25, 50 and 200 kGy. After irradiation, the optical, structural, and morphological properties, as well as the possibility of their use as an agent in bioimaging and photodynamic therapy, were studied. We measured an enhanced quantum yield of photoluminescence with the highest dose of 25 kGy (21.60%). Both S- and N-functional groups were detected in all gamma-irradiated GQDs: amino, amide, thiol, and thione. Spin trap electron paramagnetic resonance showed that GQDs irradiated with 25 kGy can generate singlet oxygen upon illumination. Bioimaging on HeLa cells showed the best visibility for cells treated with GQDs irradiated with 25 kGy, while cytotoxicity was not detected after treatment of HeLa cells with gamma-irradiated GQDs.
