AB - One of the effects of the interaction of ultrashort laser beam with materials is the forming of laser-induced parallel surface structures (LIPSS), with period less than beam wavelength. For multilayer thin metal films, the quality of formed structures is better. The sample of five bilayers of Al and Ti on Si substrate was exposed to femtosecond beam and noticed the forming of of two types of structures different in shape. Both are most probably the product of surface Plasmon polariton on the surface of most top layer. The occurrence of Plasmon polariton on the surface of thin metal layers and nanoparticles can confine the propagation of electromagnetic field and to amplify the fluorescent signal from molecules of the chemical compound on the surface. Depending on the interface structure for determining the target chemical on metal surface, Plasmon enhanced fluorescence is an attractive method for shortening the time of detection and increasing the sensitivity of various analytical technologies used in forensics.

AB - The interaction of ultrashort laser beam with metal surfaces may induce the generation of periodic structures (LIPSS) with period less than the incoming wavelength, opening wide area of application [1, 2]. The presence of the underneath layer influences the quality of the LIPSS [3] . We have exposed multilayer thin films Ni/Ti, Ni/Pd, W/Ti, Ti/Ta to femtosecond beams of various wavelengths and powers. The interactions have been performed by Mira900 fs laser of Coherent. Detailed surface morphology after irradiation was examined firstly by optical microscopy, and then by scanning electron microscopy (JEOL JSM-7500F, Tokyo, Japan). Two types of structures have been noticed. Their appearance differ in the direction against the polarization direction, in pronounced ablation and in the spatial period, enabling their grouping into LIPSS of higher and lower spatial frequencies. Surface plasmon polariton is seen as the most probable cause of periodic distribution of energy at the surface and consequently to LIPSS.

AB - Resorcinol–formaldehyde (RF) cryogels were synthesized by sol–gel polycondensation of resorcinol with formaldehyde and freeze-drying was carried out with t-butanol. Carbon cryogel (CC) was obtained by pyrolyzing RF cryogels in an inert atmosphere to 950 °C. Nitrogen doped CCs (CCN) were synthesized by introducing melamine into RF precursor mixture solution to obtain nitrogen concentration 2, 6 and 10 wt.%. Material was characterized by elemental analysis, nitrogen adsorption– desorption measurements, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, FT-IR Spectroscopy. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) was used to investigate capacitive and electrocatalytic properties. Conductivity measurement was also performed. Elemental analysis results confirmed presence of nitrogen in CCN samples in the range from 0.45 to 1.15 wt.%. Raman spectroscopy of the samples showed increase of D and G peak integrated intensity ratio (ID/IG) with nitrogen doping suggesting that the structural disorder as well as edge plane density increase, but according to similar ID/IG values for CCN samples, their share is not directly related to the amount of incorporated N. Characterization by nitrogen adsorption showed that overall specific surface and maximum mesopores are achieved in CCN sample with medium nitrogen concentration. Results of cyclic voltammetry experiments demonstrated maximum capacitance for CCN sample with smallest N wt.% indicating that narrow pore size distribution and high specific surface area are dominant factors to achieve good capacitive behavior. The relatively low doping level of nitrogen reached in CCN samples may be the reason for the incomplete reduction of oxygen to hydroxide and furthermore it turned out that presence of N in the structure of CC had a negligible effect on the otherwise relatively high conductivity of CC. © 2019 Elsevier B.V.

AB - The occurrence of laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) has been known for a while. Multilayer thin films, like Al/Ti, are suitable for LIPSS formation and attractive for applications—due to their wearing behavior and corrosion resistance; LIPSS generation may improve their properties as well. LIPSS properties depend not only on the material but also on the beam characteristics, like wavelength, polarization and scanning directions, etc. After exposing with NIR femtosecond pulses from Coherent Mira 900 laser system in several beam exposures, we have analyzed the samples of thin metal film systems with Tescan Mira3 SEM and NTegra AFM. The formation of LIPSS is most probably due to the generation of surface plasmon polariton, through the periodic distribution of energy in the interaction zone which lead to thermal processes in layers and interfaces. Two types of LIPSS were generated, which differ in shape, orientation and in ablation pronounced or not. For consecutive interactions in the same direction, LIPSS maintained its orientation, while for orthogonal passes LIPSS with mutually orthogonal orientation were generated. LIPSS period fluctuated between 320 and 380 nm and structures with pronounced ablation have significantly smaller width. Probable mechanism is that for greater accumulated energy pronounced ablation takes place giving LIPSS in the form of trenches or grooves, while for less accumulated energy the buildup of the material—probably due to pronounced oxidation—lead to LIPSS in the form of hills or ridges.

AB - The influence of material characteristics—i.e., type or surface texture—to wetting properties is nowadays increased by the implementation of ultrafast lasers for nanostructuring. In this account, we exposed multilayer thin metal film samples of different materials to a femtosecond laser beam at a 1030 nm wavelength. The interaction generated high-quality laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) of spatial periods between 740 and 790 nm and with maximal average corrugation height below 100 nm. The contact angle (CA) values of the water droplets on the surface were estimated and the values between unmodified and modified samples were compared. Even though the laser interaction changed both the surface morphology and the chemical composition, the wetting properties were predominantly influenced by the small change in morphology causing the increase in the contact angle of ~80%, which could not be explained classically. The influence of both surface corrugation and chemical composition to the wetting properties has been thoroughly investigated, discussed and explained. The presented results clearly confirm that femtosecond patterning can be used to mold wetting properties.

AB - The formation of an ordered surface texture with micro and nanometer features on Ti/Zr multilayers is studied for better understanding and improvement of cell integration. Nanocomposite in form 30×(Ti/Zr)/Si thin films was deposited by ion sputtering on Si substrate for biocompatibility investigation. Surface texturing by femtosecond laser processing made it possible to form the laser-induced periodic surface structure (LIPSS) in each laser-written line. At fluence slightly above the ablation threshold, beside the formation of low spatial frequency-LIPSS (LSFL) oriented perpendicular to the direction of the laser polarization, the laser-induced surface oxidation was achieved on the irradiated area. Intermixing between the Ti and Zr layers with the formation of alloy in the sub-surface region was attained during the laser processing. The surface of the Ti/Zr multilayer system with changed composition and topography was used to observe the effect of topography on the survival, adhesion and proliferation of the murine mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Confocal and SEM microscopy images showed that cell adhesion and their growth improve on these modified surfaces, with tendency of the cell orientation along of LIPSS in laser-written lines. © 2019 by the authors.

AB - Cerium oxide (CeO 2-δ ) ultrafine nanoparticles, with the lower (CeO 2-δ -HT) and higher (CeO 2-δ -SS) fraction of oxygen vacancies, were used as anchoring sites for the polymerization of aniline in acidic medium. As a result, polyaniline-emeraldine salt (PANI-ES)-based composites (PANI-ES@CeO 2-δ -HT and PANI-ES@CeO 2-δ -SS) were obtained. The interaction between CeO 2-δ and PANI was examined by FTIR and Raman spectroscopy. The PANI polymerization is initiated via electrostatic interaction of anilinium cation and Cl − ions (adsorbed at the protonated hydroxyl groups of CeO 2-δ ), and proceeds with hydrogen and nitrogen interaction with oxide nanoparticles. Tailoring the oxygen vacancy population of oxide offers the possibility to control the type of PANI-cerium oxide interaction, and consequently structural, electrical, thermal, electronic and charge storage properties of composite. A high capacitance of synthesized materials, reaching ∼294 F g −1 (PANI-ES), ∼299 F g −1 (PANI-ES@CeO 2-δ -HT) and ∼314 F g −1 (PANI-ES@CeO 2-δ -SS), was measured in 1 M HCl, at a common scan rate of 20 mV s −1 . The high adhesion of PANI with cerium oxide prevents the oxide from its slow dissolution in 1MHCl thus providing the stability of this composite in an acidic solution. The rate of electrochemical oxidation of emeraldine salt into pernigraniline was also found to depend on CeO 2-δ characteristics. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd

AB - The occurrence of laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) has been known for a while [1]. Multilayer thin films, like Al/Ti, are suitable for LIPSS formation and attractive for applications – due to their wearing behavior and corrosion resistance; LIPSS generation may improve their properties as well [2, 3]. LIPSS properties depend not only on the material but also on the beam characteristics, like wavelength, polarization and scanning directions, etc. [4]. Probable mechanism is that for greater accumulated energy pronounced ablation takes place giving LIPSS in the form of “trenches”, while for less accumulated energy the buildup of the material – probably due to pronounced oxidation – lead to LIPSS in the form of “hills”.

AB - In the diffraction pattern produced by a half-plane sharp edge when it obstructs the passage of a laser beam, two characteristic regions are noticeable. There is a central region, where the diffraction of laser light appears in the region of geometric shadow, while intensity oscillations are observed in the non-obstructed area. On both sides of the edge, there are also very long light traces along the normal to the edge of the obstacle. The theoretical explanation of this phenomenon is based on the Fresnel–Kirchhoff diffraction theory applied to the Gaussian beam propagation behind the obstacle. In this paper, we supplement this explanation by considering electromagnetic flow lines, which provide a more complete interpretation of the phenomenon in terms of electric and magnetic fields and flux lines; at the same time, that can be related to average photon paths. © 2018, Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature.

AB - The adsorption of thiacyanine dye molecules on citrate-stabilized silver nanoparticle clusters drop-cast onto freshly cleaved mica or highly oriented pyrolytic graphite surfaces is examined using colocalized surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy. The incidence of dye Raman signatures in photoluminescence hotspots identified around nanoparticle clusters is considered for both citrate- and borate-capped silver nanoparticles and found to be substantially lower in the former case, suggesting that the citrate anions impede the efficient dye adsorption. Rigorous numerical simulations of light scattering on random nanoparticle clusters are used for estimating the electromagnetic enhancement and elucidating the hotspot formation mechanism. The majority of the enhanced Raman signal, estimated to be more than 90%, is found to originate from the nanogaps between adjacent nanoparticles in the cluster, regardless of the cluster size and geometry. AB - The oxidation behaviour and morphological modification of CrN/(Cr,V)N coatings on Si wafers were studied after UV nanosecond laser (wavelength 248 nm, pulse duration 25 ns) processing in ambient air. The evolution of the surface composition and microstructure with the number of accumulated/subsequent pulses was systematically analysed depending on the initial content of vanadium in the as-deposited coatings. Irradiation of CrN/(Cr,V)N coatings with different content of vanadium was carried out at a fluence of 0.17 J cm−2with different number of pulses. The concentration of metallic components was fairly homogeneous distributed throughout the sample. However, on surface and in sub-surface regions the contents of Cr and V are diminished due to laser-induced oxidation. The composition and thickness of forming oxides mixture, Cr2O3and V2O5, are depending on the number of applied laser pulses and the initial vanadium content. The asymmetric progress of surface morphology is characterized by the formation of grainy structures at peripheries and the appearance of cracks and irregular closed shapes in the centre of the irradiation area.

AB - The incorporation of trace amounts (<0.2%) of Co and Ni noticeably enhanced the catalytic activity of nitrogen-free ordered mesoporous carbon (OMC) towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). (Co,Ni)-doped OMCs were characterized by N2-adsorption measurements, X-ray powder diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy methods, and their ORR activity was estimated by voltammetry on rotating disk electrode in acidic and alkaline media. (Co,Ni)-doped OMCs show modest activities in acidic media, while the catalytic activity in alkaline media is rather high. The measured activities are compared to the Pt-based and Pt-free ORR catalysts reported in the literature. The number of electrons consumed per O2in metal-doped OMCs was found to vary between 2 and 4, which is advantageous in comparison to metal-free OMC. Also, the mass activities of metal-doped OMCs were found to be up to 2.5 times higher compared to that of metal-free OMC. We suggest that the ORR activity is governed by a balance between (i) textural properties, which determine the electrochemically accessible surface of the catalyst and which are influenced by the addition of a metal precursor, and (ii) novel active sites formed upon the introduction of metals into the carbon structure. In particular, our Density Functional Theory calculations suggest that Co and Ni atoms embedded into the single vacancies of graphene can activate the O2molecule and contribute to the decomposition of peroxide.

AB - Single-shot femtosecond laser ablation of Ti(Al/Ti)(5) and (Ni/Ti)(5) films on silicon substrates was studied as a function of laser fluence by means of scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, and optical profilometry. Ablation occurs as gradual threshold-like selective removal of a few top layers at lower fluences and rather continuous removal at higher fluences, exponentially increasing versus ablated depth, with the final complete (through) ablation of the entire films. The observed selective rupture at the different internal interfaces was related to thermomechanically and chemically enhanced (interface-facilitated) explosive boiling, with the corresponding energy deposition provided by cascaded heat transfer in the poorly conducting Ti and Ni, and highly conducting Al layers and the interfacial thermal (Kapitza) resistance effect. Published by AIP Publishing.

AB - During interaction of femtosecond laser beam with metal surfaces, laser induced pe- riodic nanostructures, LIPSS can be formed, which may improve properties of materials. Having excellent mechanical properties, multilayer thin films, like 5x(Al/Ti)@Si, are con- venient for forming of high quality LIPSS [1] due to their multilayer structure. We have exposed the multilayer thin film metal systems 5x(Al/Ti)@Si with femtosecond beam from the laser system Coherent Mira 900 in NIR with various scanning configurations [2]. The irradiated samples have been analyzed by Tescan Mira3 SEM. The beam scanned over the surface of the samples with multi-pass and cross-directional scanning configurations with the change of polarization direction. The formation of LIPSS is most probably due to the occurence of surface plasmon polariton, which leads to the periodic distribution of energy on the sample surface. The orientation of the LIPSS is related to the direction of the beam polarization. During multi-pass scanning, LIPSS maintained its configuration. The preservation of structures occured to some extent. Depending on the accumulated energy, two forms of LIPSS were generated: “hills”, for less accumulation, and “trenches” for greater accumulation. “Hills” are non-ablative, probably are due to the build-up of the material and are parallel to the polarization direction. “Trenches” are formed by ablation and are perpendicular to the polarization direction. During cross-directional scanning, LIPSS of orthogonal directions have been generated. The value of the “hills” period was around 360 nm and the width was ∼285 nm. The values of “trenches” period fluctuated between 320 and 380 nm, while width was between 85 and 45 nm. Proposed mechanism is that, for less accumulated energy, “hills” formed, while more accumulated energy leads to the ablation and formation of “trenches”.

AB - In this paper we describe the synthesis and characterization of the Sr2CeO4:Eu3+ nanopowder and possibilities of its application for temperature and high pressure sensing. The material was prepared using simple solution combustion synthesis. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and photoluminescence (PL) techniques have been used to confirm and characterize the prepared material. Time resolved analysis of emission spectra was achieved by using the streak camera system. Measured lifetime values of luminescence emission and the intensity ratios of spectral lines were used for determining the calibration curves for remote temperature sensing. We have analyzed sensitivity improvement of the intensity ratio method by using a temporal evolution of emission lines and simulation of delayed gating of one of them. Pressure effects on optical properties of Sr2CeO4: Eu3+ nanophosphor are also investigated.

AB - Modification of single and complex nickel-palladium samples by laser processing in the femtosecond time domain was studied. The samples were processed by focused Ti:Sapphire laser beam (Clark CPA-2101) with 775 nm laser wavelength, 2 kHz repetition rate, 200 fs pulse duration. The laser-induced morphological modifications have shown dependence on the applied fluences and number of laser pulses. The formed surface nanostructures on the single NiPd/Si and multilayer 5x(Ni/Pd)/Si systems are compared with individual Ni and Pd thin films. The results show an increase in surface roughness, formation of parallel periodic surface structures, appearance of hydrodynamic features and ablation of surface material. At low number of pulses (less than 10 pulses) and low pulse energies range (not over 1.7 mu J), the two types of laser-induced periodic surface structure (LIPSS) can be observed: low and high spatial frequency LIPSS (HSFL and LSFL). For all samples, the measured LSFL periods were 720 nm for the ripples created solely on thin film surfaces during the single pulse action. In the case of the multi-pulse irradiation, the periodicities of created LSFLs on the all investigated thin films have shown tendency to reduction with increasing of pulse energies. AB - Processing of AlTiN/TiN multilayered hard coatings by femtosecond (fs) laser pulses has been investigated. Irradiation was performed in air with linearly polarized laser radiation with pulses of 200 fs duration at 775 nm wavelength. Single or 1000 subsequent laser pulses were directed at normal incidence towards target surface. Laser energy per pulse was adjusted from 0.5 to 50 mu J and corresponding fluence was 0.17-17.5 J cm(-2). The as deposited and laser-ablated samples were characterized by optical confocal microscopy, optical profilometry and scanning and transmition electron microscopy. In case of the AlTiN/TiN coating, a single-pulse damage threshold of 0.41 J cm(-2) was estimated. Well defined holes/craters with diameters from 7 to 35 mu m, up to 40 mu m depth were drilled, depending on laser pulse energy and number, after 1000 laser pulses. For small energy/fluence, laser induced periodical surface structures were observed. A model is discussed which can account for these features by the accumulation effect during multi-pulse irradiation. The forming craters can prove useful for fabrication of micron solid state lubricant reservoirs in the protective coating-steel system.

AB - During femtosecond interaction with surfaces, the processes of liquid and solid-state dewetting could be responsible for the generation and regrouping of nanoparticles and nanoparticle clusters. The occurrence of surface plasmon polariton most probably induces the LIPSS arrangement. We have used low-fluence scanning femtosecond beam to generate sub-wavelength periodic structures on multilayer Ni/Pd thin films on Si. The spatial period of LIPSS increases with the change of scanning directions in respect to the polarization direction due to the phase difference increase between the incoming and induced oscillations. AB - The interaction of ultra-short laser pulses with Titanium/Aluminium (Ti/Al) nano-layered thin film was investigated. The sample composed of alternating Ti and Al layers of a few nanometres thick was deposited by ion-sputtering. A single pulse irradiation experiment was conducted in an ambient air environment using focused and linearly polarized femtosecond laser pulses for the investigation of the ablation effects. The laser induced morphological changes and the composition were characterized using several microscopy techniques and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The following results were obtained: (i) at low values of pulse energy/fluence, ablation of the upper Ti layer only was observed; (ii) at higher laser fluence, a two-step ablation of Ti and Al layers takes place, followed by partial removal of the nano-layered film. The experimental observations were supported by a theoretical model accounting for the thermal response of the multiple layered structure upon irradiation with ultra-short laser pulses. AB - Formation of periodic nanostructures on the Ti/5x(Al/Ti)/Si multilayers induced by picosecond laser pulses is studied in order to better understand the formation of a laser-induced periodic surface structure (LIPSS). At fluence slightly below the ablation threshold, the formation of low spatial frequency-LIPSS (LSFL) oriented perpendicular to the direction of the laser polarization is observed on the irradiated area. Prolonged irradiation while scanning results in the formation of a high spatial frequency-LIPSS (HSFL), on top of the LSFLs, creating a co-existence parallel periodic structure. HSFL was oriented parallel to the incident laser polarization. Intermixing between the Al and Ti layers with the formation of Al-Ti intermetallic compounds was achieved during the irradiation. The intermetallic region was formed mostly within the heat affected zone of the sample. Surface segregation of aluminium with partial ablation of the top layer of titanium was followed by the formation of an ultra-thin Al2O3 film on the surface of the multi-layered structure. AB - The carbon fiber based composites: carbon fiber reinforced plastic and 3D carbon fiber reinforced carbon composites were exposed to the Nd3+: YAG laser beams (1064 nm). Experimental parameters for the interaction of the laser beam with 1.5 Hz pulse frequency and with pulse duration 0.7 ms varied: energy density between 128 and 1915 J cm(-2), pulse energy from 1 to 3 J and mean power in the range between 0.4 and 6.5 kW. Apparently, the energy absorbed by the composite samples was mainly converted into thermal energy, causing a range of damages, from instantaneous evaporation to cracking and melting, which resulted in a crater-like damage. Program ImageJ was executed for quantitative analysis of generated damages based on micrographs obtained by SEM and light microscopes. Obtaied results enable identification of the laser induced changes in the material. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AB - High quality bismuth germanium oxide single crystals were irradiated by a femtosecond pulsed laser beam of increasing power. Analyses performed on irradiated and unirradiated samples showed significant changes in transmittance, transmission spectra, sample color, Raman spectra, X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern, Verdet constant, magneto-optical property, and absorption coefficient. After irradiation, the transmission spectra values increased whereas anisotropy detected in the transmission spectra of unirradiated samples disappeared. The change of color caused by irradiation was noticeable to the naked eye. The XRD measurements confirmed structural changes induced by laser irradiation, i.e., the laser-beam-incident side of the sample became almost amorphous, whereas the side opposite to the incident can be indexed to the Bi12GeO20 compound. Irradiation caused increase of Raman spectra peaks with the exception of crystal peaks of type E, which disappeared. The femtosecond pulsed laser irradiation can be used to improve bismuth germanium oxide single crystal optical properties. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AB - In this work we investigated the photoluminescence properties of Y2O3: Er3+, Eu3+ as a function of temperature and the possibility to use this material as a temperature sensor. Photoluminescence emission measurements with 532 nm laser excitation were recorded in the temperature range from 303 up to 573 K. The measured intensity ratio of erbium S-4(3/2) - GT I-4(15/ 2) and europium D-5(0) - GT F-7(2) emission lines was used for determination of the temperature calibration curve. These emission lines are intense, narrow and well defined. The distance between the lines, being 47 nm, can be easily measured even with a low-resolution spectrometer. The calculated relative sensitivity of the temperature sensor was 1.4% K-1 at 303 K, in the physiological temperature range, meaning that it could be successfully applied in biological studies.

abstract = "In this work we investigated the photoluminescence properties of Y2O3: Er3+, Eu3+ as a function of temperature and the possibility to use this material as a temperature sensor. The calculated relative sensitivity of the temperature sensor was 1.4% K-1 at 303 K, in the physiological temperature range, meaning that it could be successfully applied in biological studies.",

AB - The surface morphology of the ablation craters created in the multilayer 10x(Al/Ti)/Si system by nanosecond laser pulses at single- and dual wavelength has been studied experimentally and numerically. A complex multilayer thin film including ten (Al/Ti) bilayers deposited by ion sputtering on Si(1 0 0) substrate to a total thickness of 260 nm were illuminated at different laser irradiance in the range 0.25-3.5 x 10(9)W cm(-2). Single pulse laser irradiation was done at normal incidence in air, with the single wavelength, either at 532 nm or 1064 nm or with both laser light simultaneously in the ratio of 1: 10 for energy per pulse between second harmonic and 1064 nm. Most of the absorbed laser energy was rapidly transformed into heat, producing intensive modifications of composition and morphology on the sample surface. The results show an increase in surface roughness, formation of specific nanostructures, appearance of hydrodynamic features and ablation of surface material with crater formation. Applying a small fraction (10%) of the second harmonic in dual-wavelength pulses, a modification of the 10x(Al/Ti)/Si system by a single laser pulse was reflected in the formation of wider and/or deeper craters. Numerical calculations show that the main physical mechanism in ablation process is normal evaporation without phase explosion. The calculated and experimental results agree relatively well for the whole irradiance range, what makes the model applicable to complex Al/Ti multilayer systems. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. AB - A study of the effects of laser irradiation on the morphology and composition of Ni/Ti multilayers induced by nanosecond laser pulses at different wavelengths is reported. Irradiation of complex 109(Ni/Ti)/Si sample was done by a Nd:YAG laser which operate at a 1064 nm wavelength, frequency doubled wavelength (532 nm) and dual-wavelength (1064 and 532 nm). The following surface morphological changes were observed: (1) ablation of the thin film during the first laser pulse and (2) appearance of some nanostructures (mosaic structure) in the irradiated region. After action of one pulse, the boundary of damage area was relatively sharp at low pulse energy, whereas it was diffuse after irradiation with higher energy per pulse. The results obtained show that laser irradiation induced mixing between Ni and Ti layers which creates conditions for the formation of intermetallic compounds. A numerical model was used to predict ablation depths and temperatures inside the material during the time. The model prediction shows a close agreement with experimental data.
