AB - Hafnium carbide (HfC) is a refractory compound known for its exceptional mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties. This compound has gained significant attention in materials science and engineering due to its high melting point, extreme hardness, and excellent thermal stability. This study presents crystal structure prediction via energy landscape explorations of pristine hafnium carbide supplemented by data mining. Apart from the well-known equilibrium rock salt phase, we predict eight new polymorphs of HfC. The predicted HfC phases appear in the energy landscape with known structure types such as the WC type, NiAs type, 5-5 type, sphalerite (ZnS) type, TlI type, and CsCl type; in addition, we predict two new structure types denoted as ortho_HfC and HfC_polytype, respectively. Moreover, we have investigated the structural characteristics and mechanical properties of hafnium carbide at the DFT level of computation, which opens diverse applications in various technological domains.

AB - In the last few decades, aluminum nitride (AlN) and boron nitride (BN) have become a point of interest to many researchers and scholars from different disciplines around the world. Due to its attractive properties, AlN has been successfully used in various applications, starting from advanced ceramics materials, additive for grain size control in micro-alloyed steels, through optoelectronics and microelectronics, and finally to semiconductors. On the other hand, BN has broad applications in various fields, such as 2D material, lubricant material, superhard and semiconductor material as well as many others. This study focuses on the mixed AlN/BN compounds, in particular, boron-rich AlN and aluminum-rich BN systems, thus having the entire range of AlN/BN compositions. The special focus was on structural properties investigated using the hybrid B3LYP method. Important structural properties were investigated to offer novel technological and industrial applications of mixed AlN/BN materials.

AB - In this study, nanochitosan dots (ChiDs) were synthesized using gamma rays and encapsulated in bacterial cellulose (BC) polymer matrix for antibiofilm potential in photodynamic therapy. The composites were analyzed for structural changes using SEM, AFM, FTIR, XRD, EPR, and porosity measurements. Additionally, ChiD release was assessed. The results showed that the chemical composition remained unaltered, but ChiD agglomerates embedded in BC changed shape (1.5–2.5 µm). Bacterial cellulose fibers became deformed and interconnected, with increased surface roughness and porosity and decreased crystallinity. No singlet oxygen formation was observed, and the total amount of released ChiD was up to 16.10%. Antibiofilm activity was higher under green light, with reductions ranging from 48 to 57% under blue light and 78 to 85% under green light. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus was the most sensitive strain. The new photoactive composite hydrogels show promising potential for combating biofilm-related infections.

AB - LaFSe and LaFS materials have shown great potential for various optoelectronic applications, such as photovoltaics, light-emitting diodes, and photodetectors. Mixed LaFSe/LaFS compounds have been synthesized through high-temperature experiments. The introduction of sulfur into LaFSe causes distortion in the crystal lattice, leading to changes in the unit cell. A new algorithm is presented that keeps the symmetries of the mixed LaFSe/LaFS phases, and it is combined with ab initio structure optimization in order to efficiently generate and compute models for solid solution-type compounds. There is good agreement between experimental and theoretical data, and additional predicted structures under extreme conditions in various lanthanoid fluoride selenides/sulfides have been introduced. The substitution of selenium for sulfur within the LaFSe lattice can result in some unusual electronic properties, including changes in the size of the band gap, the character of the gap, and the electronic structure of the material.

AB - Since their discovery, iron and hydrogen have been two of the most interesting elements in scientific research, with a variety of known and postulated compounds and applications. Of special interest in materials engineering is the stability of such materials, where hydrogen embrittlement has gained particular importance in recent years. Here, we present the results for the Fe-H system. In the past, most of the work on iron hydrides has been focused on hydrogen-rich compounds since they have a variety of interesting properties at extreme conditions (e.g. superconductivity). However, we present the first atomistic study of an iron-rich Fe4H compound which has been predicted using a combination of data mining and quantum mechanical calculations. Novel structures have been discovered in the Fe4H chemical system for possible experimental synthesis at the atomistic level.

AB - Ferrofluids based on magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) have been widely studied as multipurpose agents in various medical applications including magnetic hyperthermia, targeted drug delivery and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). To increase their stability and compatibility with the living cells and thus improve their suitability for these purposes, the IONPs are often functionalized with different organic or inorganic molecules. In this work we report on the preparation of polyvinilpyrrolidone (PVP) functionalized IONPs through a simple co-precipitation method and investigated their suitability for magnetic hyperthermia and as a MRI contrast agent. Spherical PVP-coated IONPs, with an average particle size of ≈ 15 nm, showed superparamagnetic behavior and high saturation magnetization Ms = 80.7 emug−1, at room temperature. The specific absorption rate (SAR), a measure of the heating ability, ranged from 17 W/g to 721 W/g (evaluated for various combinations of AC magnetic field amplitudes and frequencies), while the intrinsic loss power (ILP) was in the range from 0.53 nHm2 kg−1 to 2.34 nHm2 kg−1. In addition to relatively good heating ability, high T2 relaxivity, r2 = 126 mM−1 s−1 and high r2/r1 ratio demonstrated that the preparation procedure used here can yield nanoparticles suitable for MRI guided localized magnetic hyperthermia.

AB - This study reviews the performance analysis of a 137Cs irradiation system that has recently been installed in the laboratory of Uzbek National Institute of Metrology. The laboratory is responsible for calibrating calibration facilities and for calibrating most protection level radiation monitoring instruments used in medical, nuclear, industrial and academic settings in Uzbekistan. This system employs the most advanced radiation safety standards, along with 21st century source automation methods. In this work, we review the system’s performance according to ISO 4037 and present measurement uncertainty budget. Our analysis shows excellent results in terms of scattered radiation, beam uniformity and field size, change in source position, test for source impurities, chamber stability and source calibration, and all these parameters fully comply with the requirements of ISO 4037.

AB - This study investigates the impact of Co–Mo–W ionic activators on the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline electrolysis, comparing their performance to Co–Mo and Co–W systems. The research focuses on analyzing the catalytic efficiency of these activators under varying conditions, including temperature and current density variations. Key findings reveal that the Co–Mo–W activator enhances HER performance, with a significant 17% reduction in energy consumption compared to plain electrolyte, mirroring the efficiency of Co–Mo. Tafel analysis gave the insight of the reaction mechanism for HER for all activators, with Co–Mo–W exhibiting a lower Tafel slope, suggesting improved catalytic activity. Structural and morphological analysis of electrode coatings shows a highly developed surface for Co–Mo–W, with a roughness factor similar to or slightly lower than the most developed Co–Mo coating. The study concludes that the synergistic combination of Co, Mo, and W in a tri-component ionic activator offers a promising catalytic activity for HER, outperforming bi-component systems and presenting significant potential for industrial-scale alkaline water electrolysis applications.

AB - Clinical interpretation of an electrocardiogram (ECG) can be detrimentally affected by noise. Removal of the electromyographic (EMG) noise is particularly challenging due to its spectral overlap with the QRS complex. The existing EMG-denoising algorithms often distort signal morphology, thus obscuring diagnostically relevant information. Here, a new iterative regeneration method (IRM) for efficient EMG-noise suppression is proposed. The main hypothesis is that the temporary removal of the dominant ECG components enables extraction of the noise with the minimum alteration to the signal. The method is validated on SimEMG database of simultaneously recorded reference and noisy signals, MIT-BIH arrhythmia database and synthesized ECG signals, both with the noise from MIT Noise Stress Test Database. IRM denoising and morphology-preserving performance is superior to the wavelet- and FIR-based benchmark methods. : IRM is reliable, computationally non-intensive, fast and applicable to any number of ECG channels recorded by mobile or standard ECG devices.

AB - While the effects of chronic exposure to microplastic particles (MPs) are extensively studied, the outcomes of a single treatment have received relatively less attention. To investigate MPs’ potential acute toxicity, including their impact on general health status (victual consumption, sensorimotor deficits, and clinical toxicity signs) and serum biochemical parameters (markers of organ/tissue function and oxidative stress indicators), we administered thoroughly characterized MPs (1.4, 35, or 125 mg/kg), generated from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles, to adult male Wistar rats via oral gavage. The MPs’ short-term effects were assessed with well-established tests and methods. The results point to the absence of sensorimotor deficits and clinical toxicity signs, while levels of markers of liver, heart, and kidney function were altered in all MP groups. Decreased victual consumption and increased levels of oxidative stress indicators were evident following treatment with the two higher MP doses. Presented data indicate that examined MPs are able to initiate the development of local changes in tissues and organs within a short time frame, potentially leading to their damage and dysfunction. This study may increase the awareness of the detrimental effects of plastic contamination, as even a single exposure to MPs may provoke adverse health outcomes.

AB - Pesticides commonly used in the Republic of Serbia (tebuconazole, pendimethalin, pyraclostrobin, propiconazole, and famoxadone) have high stability, so their potential toxicity to humans needs to be investigated. These pesticides are in use in the Republic of Serbia in various formulations. Their toxicity and interactions with acetylcholinesterase were thoroughly investigated in this study using computational tools. The ADMET (Adsorption, Distribution, Metabolism, Excretion, Toxicity) study showed that all of them are good oral compounds, and that pendimethalin was a mutagenic compound. Glide scores ranged from -18.41 kJ mol-1 (pendimethalin) to -27.61 kJ mol-1 (famoxadone) in Mus musculus, and from -19.58 kJ mol-1 (pendimethalin) to -24.31 kJ mol-1 (propiconazole) in Homo sapiens. In addition, the experimental stability of the pesticides solutions in methanol was studied using the fast GC-MS (retention times of the studied pesticides ranged from 14.47 min (pendimethalin) to 22 min (famoxadone)). They showed good stability over time, apart from pyraclostrobin which decomposed mainly into its des-methoxy derivative after 20 months. Based on the promising modeling results, pyraclostrobin and famoxadone emerge as potential candidates for further investigation in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease, taking care to increase their stability.

AB - Gold chloride clusters play an important role in catalysis and materials chemistry. Due to the diversity of their species and isomers, there is still a dearth of structural studies at the molecular level. In this work, anions of AunCln+3- and AunCln+5- (n = 2–4) clusters were obtained by laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (LDI MS), and the most stable isomers of AunCln+3- were determined after a thorough search and optimization at the TPSSh/aug-cc-pVTZ/ECP60MDF level. The results indicate that all isomers with the lowest energy have a planar zigzag skeleton. In each species, there is one Au(III) atom at the edge connected with four Cl atoms, which sets it from the other Au(I) atoms. Four growth pathways for AunCln+3- (n = 2–7) clusters are proposed (labelled R1, R2, R3 and R4). They are all associated with an aurophilic contact and are exothermic. The binding energies tend to stabilize at ~ −41 kcal/mol when the size of the cluster increases in all pathways. The pathway R1, which connects all the most stable isomers of the respective clusters, is characterized by cluster growth due to aurophilic interactions at the terminal atom of Au(I) in the zigzag chains. In the pathway of R4 involving Au-Au bonding in its initial structures (n ≤ 3), the distance between intermediate gold atoms grows with cluster size, ultimately resulting in the transfer of the intermediate Au-Au bonding into aurophilic interaction. The size effect on the structure and aurophilic interactions of these clusters will be better understood based on these discoveries, potentially providing new insights into the active but elusive chemical species involved in the corresponding catalytic reactions or nanoparticle synthesis processes.

AB - Nanoparticles (NPs), a distinct class of particles ranging in size from 1 to 100 nm, are one of the most promising technologies of the 21st century, and titanium dioxide NPs (TiO2 NPs) are among the most widely produced and used NPs globally. The increased application of TiO2 NPs raises concerns regarding their global safety and risks of exposure. Many animal studies have reported the accumulation of TiO2 NPs in female reproductive organs; however, evidence of the resultant toxicity remains ambiguous. Since the surface area and chemical modifications of NPs can significantly change their cytotoxicity, we aimed to compare the toxic effects of pristine TiO2 powder with surface-modified TiO2 powders with salicylic acid (TiO2/SA) and 5-aminosalicylic acid (TiO2/5-ASA) on the ovaries, oviducts, and uterus on the 14th day following acute oral treatment. The results, based on alterations in food and water intake, body mass, organ-to-body mass ratio, hormonal status, histological features of tissues of interest, and antioxidant parameters, suggest that the modification with 5-ASA can mitigate some of the observed toxic effects of TiO2 powder and encourage future investigations to create NPs that can potentially reduce the harmful effects of TiO2 NPs while preserving their positive impacts.

AB - Sustainable solutions for environmental remediation are of great interest due to the escalated release of toxic substances into the ecosystem. Here, Ca-impregnated pyro-hydrocarbon (Ca-SMS) was synthesized from spent mushroom substrate (SMS) via hydrothermal carbonization at a relatively low process temperature, followed by subsequent physicochemical activation. Ca-SMS underwent characterization using various analytical techniques, and its efficacy in removing acridine red (AR) and methylene blue (MB) was assessed through batch experiments. The results suggested that Ca-SMS is an effective adsorbent for AR and MB, visiting a removal capacity of 33.82 and 81.98 mg g 1 at 35 ◦ C, respectively. The kinetic investigation uncovered that the dye removal process mostly agreed with the pseudo-second-order (PSO), while the Langmuir and Freundlich models were the most suitable to describe the removal of dyes. Thermodynamic analyses showed that the remediation process is spontaneous and endothermic. Adsorption mechanisms among dyes and Ca-SMS were multiple: physical adsorption, surface complexation, electrostatic, and ππ interaction. The feasibility of the proposed method for real sample treatment was demonstrated. These findings indicate that Ca-SMS is an effective alternative sorbent for the remediation of textile wastewater and is a viable solution for waste reduction in the rising mushroom cultivation sector.

AB - This study proposes a simple and controlled method for producing TiO2 with phase junction, oxygen vacancies, and Ti3+ by combining picosecond pulsed laser irradiation and electrochemical anodization. Ti mesh was pretreated by irradiating with a picosecond pulsed laser technique using an Nd:YAG laser (1064 nm) at two fluencies, 15 J/cm2 and 30 J/cm2 . The samples were then subjected to electrochemical anodization to form TiO2 nanotube arrays on the previously laser-treated surface. This study will investigate the possibility of forming TiO2 nanotube arrays on a pre-laser-treated Ti substrate and determine their physicochemical and photocatalytic properties. The samples were characterized by FESEM, XRD, Raman, XPS, and UV-Vis DRS. UV-Vis spectroscopy was used to observe the progress of photocatalytic degradation for all samples, and degradation products were determined using GC-MS. With the synergistic effects of phase junction, oxygen vacancies, and Ti3+, the laser-treated TiO2 with 30 J/cm2 showed a higher photocatalytic degradation rate (85.1%) of the pesticide carbofuran compared to non-laser-treated TiO2 (54.8%), remaining stable during successive degradation cycles, which has promising practical applications.

AB - Octacalcium phosphate (OCP) is a material from the calcium phos-phate group with a crystal structure similar to hydroxyapatite. The removal process of lead and cadmium in aqueous solution using octacalcium phosphate material was investigated. OCP material was synthesized by the solution pre-cipitation method. The structural and phase properties of OCP before and after the removal process were determined by the X-ray diffraction (XRD) method. Microstructural and semi-quantitative analysis of the material was investigated by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). Characteristic bands and functional group determination were revealed using the Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy with attenuated total reflection (FTIR-ATR). As target pollutants, Cd(II) and Pb(II) were chosen in adsorption experiments. Results show that OCP in the first 10 min has a very fast removal rate for Pb(II); the equilibrium state was reached after 10 min with more than 98 % adsorption efficiency. Results for Cd(II), results showed the same removal rate but somewhat lower adsorption efficiency, amounted to approximately 63 %.

AB - Background/Aim. The renin-angiotensin system (RAS) is linked to the development of atherosclerosis (As), including its initiation and progression. Besides the well-known angio-tensin-converting enzyme (ACE), two newer RAS family members are related to vascular remodeling - ACE2 as a homolog of ACE and collectrin [transmembrane protein 27 (TMEM27)] as a homolog of ACE2. Up to now, a limited number of studies have examined the expression of these RAS components in advanced carotid plaque (CP) tissue based on the sex of the patients and plaque phenotypes (PPs). There are two ultrasonographically defined PPs - the hypoechogenic plaque (HoP) and the hyperechogenic plaque (HerP) phenotype. The aim of the study was to investigate whether there was a correlation between the expression of RAS components in the CP and the sex and PPs of patients. Methods. We examined 74 patients with advanced CP who underwent carotid endarterectomy. The intraplaque expression of RAS components was determined with the real-time polymerase chain reaction, using the TaqMan® gene expression assays and Western blot. A two-way ANOVA followed by a post-hoc Tukey test was performed for the statistical analysis of results. Results. No interaction was recorded between the sex of the patients and PPs in influencing the relative expression of ACE and TMEM27 messenger RNA (mRNA) (p > 0.05). In 56.06% of plaque samples, no expression of ACE2 mRNA was detected. Among the plaques where ACE2 mRNA expression was detected, its expression level was higher in females with the HoP phenotype compared to females with the HerP phenotype (p < 0.001). In patients with the HoP phenotype, females had higher expression of ACE2 mRNA than males (p < 0.05). In the male study group, ACE protein levels were significantly lower in the HoP phenotype compared to the HerP phenotype (p < 0.001). Fe-males with the HoP phenotype had significantly higher ACE protein levels than males with the HoP phenotype (p < 0.0001). Conclusion. Our results revealed alterations in the expression levels of ACE and ACE2, at the mRNA and protein levels, in advanced carotid As. These alterations are impacted by sex and PP and may indicate a switch from the balanced RAS/ACE/ACE2 axis in the healthy blood vessel to the unbalanced axis in vascular remodeling due to As.
AB - Renin-angiotenzin sistem (RAS) povezan je sa
razvojem ateroskleroze (As), uključujući njen nastanak i
progresiju. Pored dobro poznatog angiotenzinkonvertujućeg enzima (angiotensin-converting enzyme – ACE),
homolog ACE i kolektrin [transmembrane protein 27
(TMEM27)] kao homolog ACE2. Do sada je mali broj
studija ispitivao ekspresiju komponenti RAS sistema u tkivu
uznapredovalog karotidnog plaka (KP) u odnosu na pol
bolesnika i fenotip plaka (FP). Postoje dva tipa KP
definisana primenom ultrazvuka – fenotip hipoehogenog
plaka (HoP) i fenotip hiperehogenog plaka (HerP). Cilj rada
komponenti RAS u KP i pola i FP bolesnika.
podvrgnuti operativnoj proceduri karotidne
endarterektomije. Ekspresija komponenti RAS sistema u
tkivu plaka utvrđena je lančanom reakcijom polimeraze u
realnom vremenu (real-time polymerase chain reaction)primenom eseja TaqMan® tehnologije i metode Western blota.
uznapredovaloj karotidnoj As. Te promene zavise od pola i
FP i mogu ukazivati na to da balans ose RAS/ACE/ACE2
koji postoji u zdravom krvnom sudu postaje poremećen

abstract = "Background/Aim. These alterations are impacted by sex and PP and may indicate a switch from the balanced RAS/ACE/ACE2 axis in the healthy blood vessel to the unbalanced axis in vascular remodeling due to As., Renin-angiotenzin sistem (RAS) povezan je sa
razvojem ateroskleroze (As), uključujući njen nastanak i
progresiju. Pored dobro poznatog angiotenzinkonvertujućeg enzima (angiotensin-converting enzyme – ACE),
homolog ACE i kolektrin [transmembrane protein 27
(TMEM27)] kao homolog ACE2. Do sada je mali broj
studija ispitivao ekspresiju komponenti RAS sistema u tkivu
uznapredovalog karotidnog plaka (KP) u odnosu na pol
bolesnika i fenotip plaka (FP). Postoje dva tipa KP
definisana primenom ultrazvuka – fenotip hipoehogenog
plaka (HoP) i fenotip hiperehogenog plaka (HerP). Cilj rada
komponenti RAS u KP i pola i FP bolesnika.
podvrgnuti operativnoj proceduri karotidne
endarterektomije. Ekspresija komponenti RAS sistema u
tkivu plaka utvrđena je lančanom reakcijom polimeraze u
realnom vremenu (real-time polymerase chain reaction)primenom eseja TaqMan® tehnologije i metode Western blota.
uznapredovaloj karotidnoj As. Te promene zavise od pola i
FP i mogu ukazivati na to da balans ose RAS/ACE/ACE2
koji postoji u zdravom krvnom sudu postaje poremećen
tokom remodelovanja zida krvnog suda usled As.",

AB - Background Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic demyelinating disorder intricately linked to perturbations in trace element levels. While previous studies have explored circulating trace elements in a limited sample, understanding the impact of demographic and clinical variables on the elemental profile within a larger cohort remains elusive. Methods This study aimed to evaluate essential trace elements (Cr, Mn, Co, Cu, Zn, and Se) in the sera of 215 MS patients compared to a meticulously matched control group of 100 individuals with similar gender and age. Our main objective was to identify potential variations in elemental profiles based on demographic and clinical parameters among MS patients, elucidating the prospective relevance of supplementing specific essential trace elements. Results Data indicated a significant decrease in serum levels of Mn, Co, Zn, and Se, and an increase in Cr in MS patients compared to controls. These trace elements not only discriminated between MS patients and controls but also exhibited distinctive capabilities among demographic subgroups. Gender, smoking habits, and age strata (20-40 years and 41-60 years) revealed discernible variations in elemental profiles between MS patients and their control counterparts. Se demonstrated the singular ability to stratify cases of extreme MS severity, mild relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS) and highly severe secondary progressive MS (SPMS). In contrast, Co significantly differentiated RRMS from primary progressive MS (PPMS), while Cu significantly differentiated SPMS from PPMS. Additionally, Cu showed a negative correlation with MSSS, while Mn and Zn showed a positive correlation with EDSS. Conclusion These findings underscore a substantive deficiency in Mn, Co, Zn, and Se in the MS cohort, supporting targeted supplementation with these trace elements. This study provides a comprehensive understanding of the intricate relationship between essential trace elements and MS, paving the way for further research into personalized nutritional interventions for this complex neurological disorder.

AB - Electrodeposition of selected d-metals by in-situ electrodeposition as a method for improvement of electrocatalytic activity of conventional electrodes for alkaline hydrogen evolution has been attracting the attention of researchers for about two decades. The modification of metal electrodes by ionic activators as a combination of two (binary systems) or three (ternary systems) d-metal complexes added in electrolytic solution were represented in many studies. Better catalytic performances and higher energy efficiency compared to the common electrodes is provided by a number of affordable and inexpensive solutions resulting from this research. Based on the combinations of selected d-metal complexes added in-situ to the electrolyte during electrolysis, this work provides a systematic overview of the binary and ternary systems of ionic activators, that contribute to energy savings in alkaline electrolysers, with the particular attention paid to the discussion of similarities and universal principles. Theoretical background and the fundamental properties that lay beyond the observed improvements of electrode performance upon activation by ionic activators is also represented.

AB - In this paper, we considered a molecular structure that consists of a molecular chain and an additional molecule (donor or acceptor) that can inject (or remove) single excitation (vibron, electron, etc.) onto the molecular chain. We assumed that the excitation forms a self-trapped state due to the interaction with mechanical oscillations of the chain structure elements. We analyzed the energy spectra of the excitation and showed that its state (when it migrates to the molecular chain) has the properties of the nonadiabatic polaron state. The conditions under which the excitation can migrate from one subsystem to another one were considered. It was shown that the presence of a “donor” molecule cannot significantly change the properties of the excitation located on the molecular chain. At the same time, the molecular chain can affect the position of the energy level of the excitation localized on the donor subsystem. Indirectly, this can influence the process of excitation migration from one subsystem to another one. The influence of the basic energy parameters of the system and the environment temperature on this process are discussed. The entire system was assumed to be in thermal equilibrium with the environment.

AB - Porous anorthite (CaAl2Si2O8) ceramics, suitable for thermal insulation in buildings, were obtained using waste seashells as a source of CaO, kaolin as a source of Al2O3 and SiO2 and banana peel as a pore former. Changing the volume of banana peel as well as the processing temperature was found to be an effective approach to control the thermo-mechanical properties of the obtained anorthite ceramics. The sintering of powder compacts containing up to 30 wt% banana peel at temperatures ranging from 1100 to 1200 °C resulted in anorthite ceramics possessing up to 45% open porosity, a compressive strength between 13 and 92 MPa, a bulk density between 1.87 and 2.62 g/cm3 and thermal conductivity between 0.097 and 3.5 W/mK. It was shown that waste materials such as seashells and banana peel can be used to obtain cost-effective thermal insulation in buildings.

AB - Irradiated fig pomace pyrochar (IrrPyrFP) is noteworthy as a novel sterilized low-cost sorbent of BTEX, pesticides, and Pb2+ ions. It was produced by applying pyrolysis treatment followed by gamma irradiation modification in order to obtain a highly efficient and sterile sorbent. The characterization of fig pomace before and after pyrolysis, as well as before and after irradiation of the obtained pyrochar, was done using SEM, FTIR, and elemental analysis, while its sorption ability was tested through the removal of examined pollutants by batch sorption experiments. The obtained results suggest that IrrPyrFP could play a significant role in the control of environmental pollutants, as indicated by the maximum adsorption capacities: 42 mg g−1 for BTEX, 0.625 mg g−1 for malathion, 0.495 mg g−1 for chlorpyrifos and 255 mg g−1 for Pb2+. A kinetic study showed that the removal process by IrrPyrFP mainly follows pseudo 2nd kinetics order, while the sorption equilibriums were estimated using the Langmuir and Freundlich model. Overall, the findings of this work suggest that pyrolysis and activation by irradiation of waste biomass is a promising way to produce sterile efficient sorbents for waste-water treatment based on green chemistry. Additionally, the demonstrated application of fig pomace promotes the potential of using this biomass for continual and economical waste management in the rising fig industry.

Overall, the findings of this work suggest that pyrolysis and activation by irradiation of waste biomass is a promising way to produce sterile efficient sorbents for waste-water treatment based on green chemistry. Additionally, the demonstrated application of fig pomace promotes the potential of using this biomass for continual and economical waste management in the rising fig industry.",

AB - Toxic elements, lead, and copper are often found in wastewater discharged from industries such as mining. The discharge of untreated effluent poses severe environmental challenges and sorption methods using agricultural waste materials are proposed as an efficient and cost-effective solution. For this research, activated sunflower material (ASM) was prepared from abundantly available agricultural sunflower waste residues and utilised to remove Pb2+ and Cu2+ ions from an aqueous medium. To begin, we examine variables that may have an impact on the adsorption process, such as pH, contact time, adsorbent dose, and initial concentration using Box-Behnken Design (BBD) to find optimal conditions. Maximum removal efficiency was found at a pH of 5, contact time of 180 min, and initial concentration of 50 mg/L for Pb2+ and 150 mg/L for Cu2+. Additionally, adsorbent dose differed by element, for Cu2+ it was 200 mg, whilst for Pb2+ it was 124 mg. Features of activated carbon such as morphology, elemental composition, textural properties, and surface functionalities were characterised using SEM-EDS, BET, FTIR, and XPS. The adsorption equilibrium data were analysed by Langmuir, Freundlich, and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm models. It was found that the obtained results for Pb2+ adsorption were better described with the Freundlich isotherm model. Maximum adsorption capacities for Pb2+ and Cu2+ were 91.8 mg/g and 20.5 mg/g, respectively. Furthermore, kinetic studies confirmed that the adsorption process followed a pseudo-first-order kinetic model for Pb2+, but for Cu2+ all applied kinetic models fitted experimental data with the same values of the correlation coefficient (R2 = 0.99). After comprehensive analysis using the methods mentioned above, ASM was tested for the removal of Cu2+ from mining wastewater sample, and the obtained removal efficiency was 98.6% ± 2.0%. The results of desorption experiments conducted, confirm that ASM has good potential to be reused for the purpose of removing Cu2+ from wastewater.

AB - The surface modification of commercial TiO2 powder with catecholate-type ligand Tiron (TIR) leads to the formation of the interfacial charge transfer complex (ICT) absorbing in the visible spectral range. The estimated band gap energy of the ICT complex (Eg = 2.2 eV) by density functional theory (DFT) calculations agrees with experimental measurements. The surface-modified TiO2 with TIR has enhanced sorption capacity towards Pb2+ ions compared to the pristine one due to the presence of free sulfonate groups. Our attempt to reduce Pb2+ ions to metallic form failed. The TiO2-based ICT complex with TIR can serve as an efficient sorbent to remove Pb2+ ions from the solution without the ability to recover them in metallic form in a photo-driven catalytic process. The photocatalytic ability of the ICT complex to induce oxidation reactions is significantly improved since the complete degradation of organic dye methyl orange occurs under exclusive excitations with visible light photons.
