Fluorescence microscopy and photodielectric characterization studies of the composite films of polyvinyl alcohol and tryptophan functionalized silver nanoparticles

AB  - Fluorescent nanocomposite films were prepared by solution mixing of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and tryptophan functionalized silver (AgTrp) nanoparticles. Synchrotron excitation deep-ultraviolet (DUV) fluorescence imaging was used to follow the distribution of AgTrp nanoparticles within the polymer matrix. Pronounced growth of dendrite-like structures in the presence of AgTrp nanoparticles was confirmed by bright field and fluorescence imaging as well as with atomic force microscopies. Both tryptophan and AgTrp nanoparticles influence thermal properties of the matrix. Differential scanning calorimetry measurements showed that they reduce crystallinity and significantly increase the glass transition temperature of PVA (in the case of PVA-AgTrp film the Tg increases by ~20 °C). Dielectric properties of the films were studied under two different conditions (dark and illumination). The illumination with 250 nm light induces a significant increase in conductance of the PVA-AgTrp nanocomposite. The relative changes, with respect to the conductance measured in the dark, were almost ~200%.

Uncertainty associated with the use of software solutions utilizing dicom rdsr for skin dose assessment in interventional radiology and cardiology

AB  - The purpose of this work is to provide a comprehensive analysis of uncertainties associated with the use of software solutions utilizing DICOM RDSRs for skin dose assessment in the interventional fluoroscopic environment.Three different scenarios have been defined for determining the overall uncertainty, each with a specific assumption on the maximum deviations of factors affecting the calculated dose. Relative expanded uncertainty has been calculated using two approaches: the law of propagation of uncertainty and the propagation of distributions based on the Monte Carlo method. According to the propagation of uncertainty, it is estimated that the lowest possible relative expanded uncertainty of ~13% (at the 95% level of confidence, i.e. with the coverage factor of k = 2 assuming normal distribution) could only be achieved if all sources of uncertainties are carefully controlled, whereas maximum relative expanded uncertainty could reach up to 61% if none of the influencing parameters are controlled properly. When the influencing parameters are reasonably well-controlled, realistic relative expanded uncertainty amounts to 28%. Values for the relative expanded uncertainty obtained from the Monte Carlo propagation of distributions concur with the results obtained from the propagation of uncertainty to within 3% in all three considered scenarios, validating the assumption of normality.The overall skin dose relative uncertainty has been found to range from 13 to 61%, emphasizing the importance of adequate analysis and control of all relevant uncertainty sources.

AB  - Passive solid state dosimeters, such as thermoluminescence dosimeters, provide integrated measurement of the total dose and are widely used in environmental monitoring programs. The objective of this paper is to provide a comprehensive review on the use of thermoluminescent dosimetry methods for monitoring radiation dose in the environment. The article presents the part of the research results of the project PREPAREDNESS (EMPIR 2016 call for Metrology for Environment joint research project) with a particular objective to harmonize procedures used by dosimetry services, relevant authorities and Institutes across the Europe. To achieve this, different monitoring routines that are based on passive environ mental dosimetry methods are investigated. Differences in performing specific steps such as preheating, reading, annealing, minimizing fading, and others, are analyzed. The investigation was performed by means of qualitative literature review that showed the lack of information about specific steps. The conclusion of this work is that thermoluminescent dosimetry measurement system has to be type-tested even though the testing procedure is complicated. In addition to this, control dosimeters should be introduced, International Organization for Standardization protocols should be followed during calibration, and finally, parameters influencing the measurement uncertainty have to be identified and well understood in order to pro duce ac cu rate dose measurement results.

Vendor‐independent skin dose mapping application for interventional radiology and cardiology

AB  - Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to present and validate an originally developed application SkinCare used for skin dose mapping in interventional procedures, which are associated with relatively high radiation doses to the patient’s skin and possible skin reactions. Methods: SkinCare is an application tool for generating skin dose maps following interventional radiology and cardiology procedures using the realistic 3D patient models. Skin dose is calculated using data from Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) Radiation Dose Structured Reports (RDSRs). SkinCare validation was performed by using the data from the Siemens Artis Zee Biplane fluoroscopy system and conducting “Acceptance and quality control protocols for skin dose calculating software solutions in interventional cardiology” developed and tested in the frame of the VERIDIC project. XR-RV3 Gafchromic films were used as dosimeters to compare peak skin doses (PSDs) and dose maps obtained through measurements and calculations. DICOM RDSRs from four fluoroscopy systems of different vendors (Canon, GE, Philips, and Siemens) were used for the development of the SkinCare and for the comparison of skin dose maps generated using SkinCare to skin dose maps generated by different commercial software tools (Dose Tracking System (DTS) from Canon, RadimetricsTM from Bayer and RDM from MEDSQUARE). The same RDSRs generated during a cardiology clinical procedure (percutaneous coronary intervention—PCI) were used for comparison. Results: Validation performed using VERIDIC's protocols for skin dose calculation software showed that PSD calculated by SkinCare is within 17% and 16% accuracy compared to measurements using XR-RV3 Gafchromic films for fundamental irradiation setups and simplified clinical procedures, respectively. Good visual agreement between dose maps generated by SkinCare and DTS, RadimetricsTM and RDM was obtained. Conclusions: SkinCare is proved to be very convenient solution that can be used for monitoring delivered dose following interventional procedures. © 2021 The Authors. Potential grouping of nodes induced by higher-order structures in complex networks

AB  - Complex networks display an organization of elements into nontrivial structures at versatile inherent scales, imposing challenges on a more complete understanding of their behavior. The interest of the research presented here is in the characterization of potential mesoscale structures as building blocks of generalized communities in complex networks, with an integrated property that goes beyond the pairwise collections of nodes. For this purpose, a simplicial complex is obtained from a mathematical graph, and indirectly from time series, producing the so-called clique complex from the complex network. As the higher-order organizational structures are naturally embedded in the hierarchical strata of a simplicial complex, the relationships between aggregation of nodes are stored in the higher-order combinatorial Laplacian. Based on the postulate that aggregation of nodes represents integrated configuration of information, the observability parameter is defined for the characterization of potential configurations, computed from the entries of the combinatorial Laplacian matrix. The framework introduced here is used to characterize nontrivial inherent organizational patterns embedded in two real-world complex networks and three complex networks obtained from heart rate time series recordings of three different subject’s meditative states

Photoluminescence of ZnO:Eu3+ and ZnO:Tb3+ coatings formed by plasma electrolytic oxidation of pure zinc substrate

AB  - Eu3+ and Tb3+ doped ZnO optical coatings were formed by the Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation (PEO) method from the pure Zn sheet, with various dopant concentrations. The morphologies show no significant change with the introduced dopant or their concentrations, with typical appearance of PEO formed coatings. All elements are uniformly distributed, and concentration of incorporated dopants is related to the concentrations of the Eu2O3 or Tb4O7 particles added to the basic electrolyte. Wurtzite structure of ZnO was identified in all the samples, with no change induced by the dopants. Under 260 nm excitation ZnO emits broad-band in the visible region attributed to oxygen interstitial defects and oxygen vacancies. Photoluminescence (PL) of ZnO:X3+ (X = Eu, Tb) is a sum of PL from ZnO and 4f–4f dopant emissions. Eu3+ and Tb3+ are most effectively excited in charge-transfer band and 4f5d levels, respectively. By increasing concentrations of the dopants the broad PL decreases in favor of the 4f–4f dopant transitions, an indication of the energy transfer. The morphologies show no significant change with the introduced dopant or their concentrations, with typical appearance of PEO formed coatings. All elements are uniformly distributed, and concentration of incorporated dopants is related to the concentrations of the Eu2O3 or Tb4O7 particles added to the basic electrolyte. Wurtzite structure of ZnO was identified in all the samples, with no change induced by the dopants. Under 260 nm excitation ZnO emits broad-band in the visible region attributed to oxygen interstitial defects and oxygen vacancies. Photoluminescence (PL) of ZnO:X3+ (X = Eu, Tb) is a sum of PL from ZnO and 4f–4f dopant emissions. Eu3+ and Tb3+ are most effectively excited in charge-transfer band and 4f5d levels, respectively. By increasing concentrations of the dopants the broad PL decreases in favor of the 4f–4f dopant transitions, an indication of the energy transfer. Aluminum, one of the most abundant and important materials, is coated with luminescent Sm2+-doped γ-aluminium oxide to impart thermometric functionality. Considering the potential industrial applications, two of the most widely used aluminum alloys, 6061 and 7075, are also coated. For this purpose, plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO), an effective technique for producing hard ceramic coatings on various metal surfaces, is used. It is shown that thermometric coatings can be produced on aluminum in one-step process by adding the raw precursor to the electrolyte. The valence reduction of Ln3+ to Ln2+ is achieved during the PEO process. The intense and broad (orange to deep red) emission from the coating shows supersensitivity to temperature changes over the 100–648 K range. The temperature is obtained from the coating emission using i) the emission intensity ratio method, ii) emission lifetime, and iii) emission band position with sensitivities of 4.8% K−1, 1.2% K−1, and 8 cm−1 K−1, respectively. Several applications would benefit from the thermometric coating's excellent temperature resolution of 0.04 K and the choice of three temperature read-outs that facilitate the coating's use in different luminescence thermometry setups. © 2021 Wiley-VCH GmbH

Narrow-band red phosphors of high colour purity based on Eu3+-activated apatite-type Gd9.33(SiO4)6O2

AB  - A series of new red phosphors based on apatite-type gadolinium silicate host, Gd9.33−xEux(SiO4)6O2 (0.03 < x < 1.87), have been synthesised and analysed. The phosphors show excellent chemical and thermal stability, losing only 10% of their emission intensity at 150 °C (working LED temperature) relative to that at room temperature through the electric dipole–dipole interaction. They exhibit efficient Eu3+ narrow-band red emission (quantum yield up to 75%; full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) = 7 nm; CIE colour coordinates x = 0.65, y = 0.35) of exceptional colour purity (94.2%), and the host can be heavily doped with Eu3+ (up to 10 at%) without concentration quenching of the emission. Variable-temperature powder X-ray diffraction, photoluminescence spectroscopy and Judd–Ofelt analysis of the phosphors’ radiative properties reveal the favourable influence of the structural properties of the apatite-type host on the efficiency and thermal stability of the Eu3+-activated Gd9.33(SiO4)6O2 emission.

AB  - Temperature sensing from the photoluminescence of MgAl2O4:Cr3+ ceramic powder is systematically investigated. Material was prepared by self-propagating high temperature synthesis method. In this host, Cr3+ experiences the strong crystal field, so the overlapping emissions from 2E and 4T2 energy levels are observed. Emission and excitation spectra were recorded from 300 K to 540 K. The broad photoluminescence attributed to 4T2→4A2 emission gains in intensity with increase in temperature on account of 2E→4A2 emission intensity until 460 K when both emissions start quenching. The emissions were separated by deconvolution at each temperature and used for the luminescence intensity ratio temperature readout method. The obtained relative sensitivity exhibited high values in the physiological range, from 3.5 %K−1 at 300 K to 2.9 %K−1 at 330 K, above 2 %K−1 below 400 K and above 1 %K−1 between 400 K and 540 K.

Phospors were synthesized via Pechini method and their structure is confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis. Mean crystallite size of powders was calculated to be ~22 nm. Morphology was investigated using scanning electron microscopy showing combination of dense, different size chunks constituted of spherical particles bellow 50 nm in size. Photoluminescence emission spectra of the Dy3+, Cr3+ double activated YAG consist of blue and yellow Dy3+ emissions and the broad, deep red Cr3+ emission. The decrease in the Dy3+ emission intensity with the increase in the Cr3+ content indicates the efficient energy transfer from Dy3+ to Cr3+ of ~90%. Temperature-dependant photoluminescence emission measurements are performed under 484 nm and 582 nm excitation in the steady-state domain and in the 175 K–650 K temperature range. The noted alterations of luminescence with temperature present an excellent base for studying the multiparametric temperature readouts. The luminescence intensity ratio, the most frequently exploited luminescent thermometry temperature readout method, was tested using: i) the combination of Dy3+ and Cr3+ emissions, ii) using the double excitation approach, and iii) using Cr3+ emission only, with relative sensitivities of 0.64 %K−1 at 175 K, 0.96 %K−1 at 200 K and 2.2 %K−1 at 200 K, respectively.

All near-infrared multiparametric luminescence thermometry using Er3+, Yb3+-doped YAG nanoparticles

AB  - This paper presents four new temperature readout approaches to luminescence nanothermometry in spectral regions of biological transparency demonstrated on Yb3+/Er3+-doped yttrium aluminum garnet nanoparticles. Under the 10 638 cm-1 excitation, down-shifting near infrared emissions (>10 000 cm-1) are identified as those originating from Yb3+ ions' 2F5/2 → 2F7/2 (∼9709 cm-1) and Er3+ ions' 4I13/2 → 4I15/2 (∼6494 cm-1) electronic transitions and used for 4 conceptually different luminescence thermometry approaches. Observed variations in luminescence parameters with temperature offered an exceptional base for studying multiparametric temperature readouts. These include the temperature-dependence of: (i) intensity ratio between emissions from Stark components of Er3+ 4I13/2 level; (ii) intensity ratio between emissions of Yb3+ (2F5/2 → 2F7/2 transition) and Er3+ (4I13/2 → 4I15/2 transition); (iii) band shift and bandwidth and (iv) lifetime of the Yb3+ emission (2F5/2 → 2F7/2 transition) with maximal sensitivities of 1% K-1, 0.8% K-1, 0.09 cm-1 K-1, 0.46% K-1 and 0.86% K-1, respectively. The multimodal temperature readout provided by this material enables its application in different luminescence thermometry setups as well as improved the reliability of the temperature sensing by the cross-validation between measurements. © 2021 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

abstract = "This paper presents four new temperature readout approaches to luminescence nanothermometry in spectral regions of biological transparency demonstrated on Yb3+/Er3+-doped yttrium aluminum garnet nanoparticles. Under the 10 638 cm-1 excitation, down-shifting near infrared emissions (>10 000 cm-1) are identified as those originating from Yb3+ ions' 2F5/2 → 2F7/2 (∼9709 cm-1) and Er3+ ions' 4I13/2 → 4I15/2 (∼6494 cm-1) electronic transitions and used for 4 conceptually different luminescence thermometry approaches. Observed variations in luminescence parameters with temperature offered an exceptional base for studying multiparametric temperature readouts. These include the temperature-dependence of: (i) intensity ratio between emissions from Stark components of Er3+ 4I13/2 level; (ii) intensity ratio between emissions of Yb3+ (2F5/2 → 2F7/2 transition) and Er3+ (4I13/2 → 4I15/2 transition); (iii) band shift and bandwidth and (iv) lifetime of the Yb3+ emission (2F5/2 → 2F7/2 transition) with maximal sensitivities of 1% K-1, 0.8% K-1, 0.09 cm-1 K-1, 0.46% K-1 and 0.86% K-1, respectively. The multimodal temperature readout provided by this material enables its application in different luminescence thermometry setups as well as improved the reliability of the temperature sensing by the cross-validation between measurements. © 2021 The Royal Society of Chemistry.",

Циљеви пројекта TraceRADON су: повећање тачности мере- ња у заштити од зрачења и оних која се користе за моделовање код климатских промена, следљивост до СИ јединица за ексхалације радона из земљишта, његову концентрацију у атмосфери и валидацију модела за његову дисперзију; развој след- љивих метода за мерење ниских концентрација радона у спољашњој средини у опсегу од 1 Bq/m3 дo 100 Bq/m3 са мерном несигурношћу реда 10 % (k=1) које се користе у мониторингу климатских промена и у заштити од зрачења; развој следљивих мерења флукса радона на терену, на основу развоја референтног система за ексхалацију радона „exhalation bed“ и стандард трансфера; хармонизација постојећих инструмената/метода за мерење флукса радона користећи интеркомпарацију; валидација постојећих модела и прикупљених података флукса радона, користећи следљива мерења флукса радона и концен- трације радона подржане дозиметријским и спектрометријским подацима из мрежа за рану најаву нуклеарне опасности у Европи. У овом раду ће бити дат преглед циљева и досадашњих резултата пројекта.
AB  - TraceRADON, a three year project based in the EMPIR program, is focused on radon metrology for use in climate change observation and radiation protection at the environmental level. The aims of project TraceRADON are: to increase the accuracy of both radiation protection measurements and those used for GHG modeling, traceability to SI units for radon release rates from soil, its concentration in the atmosphere and validated models for its dispersal; to develop traceable methods for the measurement of outdoor low-level radon activity concentrations in the range of 1 Bq/m3 to 100 Bq/m3 with uncertainties of 10 % (k=1) to be used in climate and radiation protection networks; to develop the capability for traceable radon flux measurements in the field, based on the development of a radon exhalation reference system “exhalation bed” and a transfer standard; to use this capability to harmonize existing radon flux instruments/methods using intercomparisons and to validate current radon flux models and inventories using traceable measurements of radon flux and radon activity concentration supported by dosimetric and spectrometric data from the radiological early warning networks in Europe. This paper presents the overview of these objectives and the results achieved in the present time.

Magnetic properties of mesoporous hematite/alumina nanocomposite and evaluation for biomedical applications

AB  - A porous hematite/alumina nanocomposite is produced by sol-gel combustion synthesis. The XRPD, Raman and FTIR methods show the presence of α-Fe2O3 phase while SEM, TEM, EDS and BET techniques further reveal the formation of porous ellipsoid-like nanostructure of hematite nanoparticles coated by amorphous alumina. Hematite nanoparticles have a size of ~40 nm whereas the porous hematite/alumina nanocomposite particles are ~100 nm in size with characteristic pores of ~7 nm. The M(H) at 300 K exhibits coercivity HC = 293 Oe and magnetization MS = 2.71 emu/g and at 5 K HC = 1150 Oe and MS = 9.25 emu/g. The M(T) under H = 100 Oe shows a bifurcation between ZFC/FC magnetization curves at all measurement temperatures Tirr>350 K (irreversibility temperature) and blocking temperature at TB ~ 305 K. Unexpectedly, the M(T) measurements under H = 10 kOe reveal the suppressed Morin transition at TM = 225 K. The analysis of the results and data from the literature reveal that the porous surface structure of hematite induces the atypical magnetic properties. A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) properties show the transverse relaxivity rate (r2) of 0.44 mM−1s−1 at 7 T and 1.06 mM−1s−1 at 15.2 T. The investigated nanocomposite particles could be useful in biomedical applications due to their low cytotoxicity and porous nanostructure.

AB  - A heterocyclic molecule of a novel class with a multiple ring system has been synthesized using a new and simple strategy and acetic acid as catalyst. The structure of the title molecule has been determined by spectral analysis and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The compound crystallizes in monoclinic system, space group P21/c, with two crystallographically independent molecules in an asymmetric unit. The two molecules show close comparable geometric parameters and a similar conformation of fused-ring systems. The crystal structure is stabilized by a combination of N–H⋅⋅⋅O and C–H⋅⋅⋅O hydrogen bonds, where independent molecules display equivalent interaction patterns.

AB  - The procedure of radioactive standards preparation by spiking selected matrices with a certified mixture of radionuclides and its validation is presented in this paper. The uncertainty budget of standard total activity was elaborated in details. The experimentally obtained efficiency curves, as well as comparison with the curves obtained by the efficiency transfer, are presented. Additionally, in order to confirm claimed homogeneity of prepared standard bulk materials, the efficiency versus density dependence for the individual gamma ray energies was checked for the same geometries and the results are presented. The results of the participation in recent IAEA PT scheme are discussed also. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd

AB  - Presented study deals with the final structure and radiological properties of different fly-ash based geopolymers. Lignite fly-ash (lignite Kolubara – Serbia) and wood fly ash were obtained in combustion process together with commercial fly-ash. Synthesis of the geopolymers was conducted by mixing fly-ash, sodium silicate solution, NaOH and water. The samples were strengthened 60 °C for 48 hours after staying at room temperature in covering mold for 24 hours. The X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared and SAM measurements were conducted on the samples after 28 days of geopolymerization process. The X-ray diffraction measurements of lignite fly-ash samples show anhydrite as the main constituent, while wood fly-ash samples consist of calcite, albite and gypsum minerals. Besides determination of physicochemical properties, the aim of this study was radiological characterization of lignite fly-ash, wood fly-ash and the obtained geopolymer products. Activity concentration of 40K and radionuclides from the 238U and 232Th decay series, in ash samples and fly-ash based geopolymers, were determined by means of gamma-ray spectrometry, and the absorbed dose rate, D, and the annual effective dose rate, E, were calculated in accordance with the UNSCEAR 2000 report.

abstract = "Presented study deals with the final structure and radiological properties of different fly-ash based geopolymers. Lignite fly-ash (lignite Kolubara – Serbia) and wood fly ash were obtained in combustion process together with commercial fly-ash. Synthesis of the geopolymers was conducted by mixing fly-ash, sodium silicate solution, NaOH and water. The samples were strengthened 60 °C for 48 hours after staying at room temperature in covering mold for 24 hours. The X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared and SAM measurements were conducted on the samples after 28 days of geopolymerization process. The X-ray diffraction measurements of lignite fly-ash samples show anhydrite as the main constituent, while wood fly-ash samples consist of calcite, albite and gypsum minerals. Besides determination of physicochemical properties, the aim of this study was radiological characterization of lignite fly-ash, wood fly-ash and the obtained geopolymer products. Activity concentration of 40K and radionuclides from the 238U and 232Th decay series, in ash samples and fly-ash based geopolymers, were determined by means of gamma-ray spectrometry, and the absorbed dose rate, D, and the annual effective dose rate, E, were calculated in accordance with the UNSCEAR 2000 report.",

AB  - The hexagonal silicon carbide (6H-SiC) is one of materials used in nuclear applications, and as such is exposed to crystal damage inducing by variety of energetic particles like neutrons. In this article the 6H-SiC crystal lattice damage was introduced by the 4 MeV C3+ and 4 MeV Si3+ channelling ion implantation at the room temperature. The implantation of C and Si ions (so called self-ions) to the set of different fluences, achieves a 6H-SiC crystal lattice damage more similar to what the exposure to neutrons would produce. The 6H-SiC crystal damage has been investigated by the Elastic Backscattering spectra taken in the channeling orientation (EBS/C). EBS/C spectra of the implanted 6H-SiC samples were taken with 1.725 MeV and 1.860 MeV protons. By fitting the EBS/C spectra, the quantitative 6H-SiC crystal damage depth profiles were obtained. Further, the cross section of crystal's implanted region has been scanned with the micro-Raman (μR) technique for a comparison. In this way, the qualitative analysis of a non-crystalline phase as a function of the crystal depth was independently determined. Additionally, a scanning electron microscopy (SEM) image was taken of the implanted crystal cross sections. The comparison of the crystal damage profiles obtained by fitting EBS/C spectra with the corresponding ones obtained with the μR and SEM techniques shows very good consistency between them.

Classical patterns in the quantum rainbow channeling of high energy electrons

AB  - We are investigating the quantum dynamics of a well-collimated electron beam transmitting through planar channels of the Si crystal. Electron states were represented by wave packets while the electron beam is treated as an ensemble of noninteracting wave packets. We have investigated the relationship between classical caustic pattern and anharmonicity of the potential and analyzed how quantum dynamic depends on the wave packet impact parameter and beam's angular divergence. We found that the extrema of the electron trajectory period, considered as a function of the impact parameter, determine the shape of the caustic pattern. All wave packet probability densities have multiple maxima generated by a self-interference. Their sum, that represents probability density of an ensemble, was found to depends strongly on the beam angular divergence. For small divergence, most peaks of different wave packets are aligned causing wavelike behavior of the ensemble. For moderate angular divergence maxima of some wave packets, are aligned with minima of others, resulting in the emergence of the classical caustic pattern. We have shown and experimentally confirmed that the only indication that the observed caustic pattern is generated by the quantum dynamics is a slight systematic shift of the corresponding caustic maxima. © 2021 American Physical Society.

AB  - Acid mine drainage (AMD) remediation by red mud (RM) can benefit process sustainability and waste valorization. Though the AMD properties upon using RM have been broadly investigated, the key features and the environmental stability of spent RM are poorly defined. The current study aimed to compare the AMD neutralization and metal removal potential of the fresh (FRM) and aged (ARM) Bayer red mud and evaluate the textural, mineralogical, chemical, radiological properties of solid residues, and the stability of toxic elements. The FRM had larger particles and exhibited higher pH, iron oxide content, and radioactivity than ARM, which could be driven by ARM leaching and settling inside the tailings pond. FRM displayed marginally higher neutralization and metal removal capacity than ARM. Reaction with AMD led to partial dissolution of cancrinite minerals without significant changes in the particle size distribution. The leachability of investigated toxic elements (As, Ba, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Se, Zn) from neutralization residues complied with the limits set for inert waste by the EN 12457–2 test. Owing to the RM neutralization, the leachability of Al, As, Cr, and V decreased with respect to pristine samples. While Zn and Mn sorbed from AMD were stable following SPLP and EN 12457–2 tests, the sequential extraction revealed increased environmental availability, posing a potential risk during disposal or application if accompanied by a decline in pH. The slight increase in radioactivity upon RM neutralization indicates that changes in radionuclide inventory should be monitored when using RM in neutralization.

AB  - Thermodynamic parameters (densities, viscosities, speed of sound, and refractive index) of four series of alkaline activators were determined over the temperature range from 15 to 60 °C for the process of geopolymerization. Mixtures of Na2SiO3and NaOH of different molar concentrations (from 2M to 8M with step 2) were used as an alkaline activator. The sample with the highest NaOH concentrationalso shows the highest values of all thermodynamic parameters.Metakaolin, obtained by calcination of kaolin at 750 °C, was used as the starting material.The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD),FTIR and Raman spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and Energy-Dispersive X-Ray (EDX) Spectroscopy. Results of FTIR analysis correlated with results of Raman Spectroscopy. Due to the polymerization process, the changes in the phonon spectrum were confirmed. The different concentra-tions of activators do not notably change the Si/Al ratio.

Influence of low-spin Co3+ for high-spin Fe3+ substitution on the structural, magnetic, optical and catalytic properties of hematite (α-Fe2O3) nanorods

AB  - Pure hematite nanorods and very long and thin cobalt-doped hematite nanorods (nanoneedles) were prepared by a combined precipitation and annealing method. The influence of the level of cobalt doping on different properties of hematite nanorods was investigated. Incorporation of cobalt in the form of low-spin Co3+ ions into the structure of hematite by substitution for high-spin Fe3+ ions was proved by determination of a significant unit cell contraction by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and characteristic positions of the absorption edge in X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectra and peaks in X-ray emission (XES) spectra. Cobalt doping caused a gradual elongation and thinning of hematite nanorods – very long and thin 1D nanoparticles (nanoneedles) were formed in the presence of 10 and 12 mol% Co. Magnetic measurements showed a strong increase in low-temperature remanent magnetization and coercivity upon cobalt doping, as well as a disappearance of the Morin transition, which was also confirmed by Mössbauer spectroscopy. Cobalt doping significantly affected optical properties of hematite nanorods – absorption in the visible and NIR ranges increased, which was accompanied by narrowing of the optical band gap. Compared with pure hematite nanorods cobalt-doped hematite nanoneedles showed a significantly better electrocatalytic activity for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). © 2020 Elsevier Ltd

Cobalt doping caused a gradual elongation and thinning of hematite nanorods – very long and thin 1D nanoparticles (nanoneedles) were formed in the presence of 10 and 12 mol% Co. Magnetic measurements showed a strong increase in low-temperature remanent magnetization and coercivity upon cobalt doping, as well as a disappearance of the Morin transition, which was also confirmed by Mössbauer spectroscopy. Cobalt doping significantly affected optical properties of hematite nanorods – absorption in the visible and NIR ranges increased, which was accompanied by narrowing of the optical band gap. Compared with pure hematite nanorods cobalt-doped hematite nanoneedles showed a significantly better electrocatalytic activity for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). © 2020 Elsevier Ltd",

AB  - Context The evidence on potential cross-talk of vitamin D and insulin in the regulation of cardiac metabolism is very scanty.Objective Cholecalciferol was administered to male Wistar rats for six weeks to study its effects on cardiac glucose metabolism regulation.Materials and methods An expression, phosphorylation and/or subcellular localisation of insulin signalling molecules, glucose transport and metabolism key proteins were studied.Results Circulating non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) level was lower after cholecalciferol administration. Cholecalciferol decreased cardiac insulin receptor substrate 1 Ser307 phosphorylation, while insulin-stimulated Akt Thr308 phosphorylation was increased. Cardiac 6-phosphofructo-2-kinase protein, hexokinase 2 mRNA level and insulin-stimulated glycogen synthase kinase 3β Ser9 phosphorylation were also increased. Finally, FOXO1 transcription factor cytosolic level was reduced.Conclusion Vitamin D-related improvement of insulin signalling and insulin regulation of glucose metabolism in the rat heart is accompanied by the decrease of blood NEFA level and dysregulation of cardiac FOXO1 signalling.

Estimating the Parameters of Extended Gravity Theories with the Schwarzschild Precession of S2 Star

AB  - After giving a short overview of previous results on constraining of Extended Gravity by stellar orbits, we discuss the Schwarzschild orbital precession of S2 star assuming the congruence with predictions of General Relativity (GR). At the moment, the S2 star trajectory is remarkably fitted with the first post-Newtonian approximation of GR. In particular, both Keck and VLT (GRAVITY) teams declared that the gravitational redshift near its pericenter passage for the S2 star orbit corresponds to theoretical estimates found with the first post-Newtonian (pN) approximation. In 2020, the GRAVITY Collaboration detected the orbital precession of the S2 star around the supermassive black hole (SMBH) at the Galactic Center and showed that it is close to the GR prediction. Based on this observational fact, we evaluated parameters of the Extended Gravity theories with the Schwarzschild precession of the S2 star. Using the mentioned method, we estimate the orbital precession angles for some Extended Gravity models including power-law f(R), general Yukawa-like corrections, scalar–tensor gravity, and non-local gravity theories formulated in both metric and Palatini formalism. In this consideration, we assume that a gravitational field is spherically symmetric, therefore, alternative theories of gravity could be described only with a few parameters. Specifically, considering the orbital precession, we estimate the range of parameters of these Extended Gravity models for which the orbital precession is like in GR. Then we compare these results with our previous results, which were obtained by fitting the simulated orbits of S2 star to its observed astrometric positions. In case of power-law f(R), generic Yukawa-like correction, scalar–tensor gravity and non-local gravity theories, we were able to obtain a prograde orbital precession, like in GR. According to these results, the method is a useful tool to evaluate parameters of the gravitational potential at the Galactic Center.

AB  - Recently predicted α-phase in the Ce2ON2 compound has been further investigated using ab initio methods. The structural properties of the α-Ce2ON2 have been investigated and compared with the related AlCo2Pr2 structure. Mechanical properties including elastic constants, bulk, shear and elastic moduli, Poisson's ratio, Pugh’s criterion, and hardness are calculated in the pressure range from 0 to 10 GPa. Also, electronic properties are calculated at the same pressure conditions using DFT-LDA approximation and the characteristic band structure has been analyzed.

Influence of bentonite and zeolite on Cs+ and Co2+ cement matrix leaching phenomena

AB  - The probability of Cs+ and Co2+ ions retention by immobilization processes in the cement matrix was determinate as the subject of analyses: matrix design, water/cement ratio, and structure porosity. Comparison of experimental results was accomplished by Hespe standard leaching method. Diffusion and semi-empirical models were used for the assessment of the washing rate as a function of time. The higher value of cement matrix mechanical resistance corresponds to a lower value of Co2+ and Cs+ ions leaching. The Co2+ leaching level was more than two orders of magnitude less than the leaching level of Cs+. The influence of bentonite and zeolite on Co2+ leaching reduction was significantly smaller in comparison with Cs+, while zeolite had a higher Cs+ and Co2+ sorption ability than bentonite. Under static leaching conditions, the contribution of diffusion to the total transport of ions in the matrix porous medium was dominant. The contribution of matrix dissolution was insignificant concerning the dominant contribution of diffusion and surface washing. The semi-empirical model showed a better approximation of the Co2+ and Cs+ ions laboratory leaching process.
