AB - Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a highly pure polysaccharide biopolymer that can be produced by various bacterial genera. Even though BC lacks functional properties, its porosity, three-dimensional network, and high specific surface area make it a suitable carrier for functional composite materials. In the present study, BC-producing bacteria were isolated from kombucha beverage and identified using a molecular method. Two sets of the BC hydrogels were produced in static conditions after four and seven days. Afterwards, two different synthesis pathways were applied for BC functionalization. The first method implied the incorporation of previously synthesized HAp/TiO2 nanocomposite using an immersion technique, while the second method included the functionalization of BC during the synthesis of HAp/TiO2 nanocomposite in the reaction mixture. The primary goal was to find the best method to obtain the functionalized material. Physicochemical and microstructural properties were analyzed by SEM, EDS, FTIR, and XRD methods. Further properties were examined by tensile test and thermogravimetric analysis, and antimicrobial activity was assessed by a total plate count assay. The results showed that HAp/TiO2 was successfully incorporated into the produced BC hydrogels using both methods. The applied methods of incorporation influenced the differences in morphology, phase distribution, mechanical and thermal properties, and antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923), Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922), Proteus mirabilis (ATCC 12453), and Candida albicans (ATCC 10231). Composite material can be recommended for further development and application in environments that are suitable for diseases spreading.

AB - Barium titanate (BT) perovskite particles were surface modified by means of mechanical treatment and used as inorganic component in polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) based composites. The changes in electrical properties of the composite films with increasing in filler content were followed by dielectric spectroscopy, breakdown strength and D-E measurements. A comparison of the properties of the composites prepared with untreated and mechanically activated particles revealed that there is a significant difference in their performances at low filler concentrations (<20 wt%). Introduction of the surface modified ceramic particles into PVDF matrix led to an increase of the dielectric constant without affecting significantly the electrical breakdown strength. In contrast, when as received BT particles were used a filler, both dielectric constants and breakdown strengths of the composite films were lower than the corresponding values observed for the pure PVDF. At higher concentrations, however, the influence of pre-treatment of the filler on the effective electrical properties becomes less significant. The obtained results were discussed in terms of the pronounced crystallization of polar β and γ crystal phases of PVDF in the presence of surface modified BT fillers, which is confirmed by Raman spectroscopy.

AB - Ceramic/polymer composites can be chemically stable, mechanically strong, and flexible, which make them candidates for electric devices, such as pressure or temperature sensors, energy storage or harvesting devices, actuators, and so forth. Depending on the application, various electrical properties are of importance. Polymers usually have low dielectric permittivity, but increased dielectric permittivity can be achieved by the addition of the ceramic fillers with high dielectric constant. With the aim to enhance dielectric properties of the composite without loss of flexibility, 5 wt% of BaTiO3-Fe2O3 powder was added into a polyvinylidene fluoride matrix. The powder was prepared by different synthesis conditions to produce core/shell structures. The effect of the phase composition and morphology of the BaTiO3-Fe2O3 core/shell filler on the structure and lattice dynamics of the polymer composites was investigated. Based on the results of the thermal analysis, various parameters of ceramic/polymer composites were determined. Differences in the phase composition and morphology of the filler have an influence on the formation of various polyvinylidene fluoride allomorphs and the degree of crystallinity. Furthermore, the dielectric performances of pure polyvinylidene fluoride and the polymer/ceramic composites were measured.

AB - To investigate the influence of spinel structure and sintering temperature on the functional properties of BaTiO3/NixZn1−xFe2O4 (x = 0, 0.5, 1), NiFe2O4, ZnFe2O4, and Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 were in situ prepared by thermal decomposition onto BaTiO3 surface from acetylacetonate precursors. As-prepared powders were additionally sintered at 1150 °C and 1300 °C. X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with electron dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) were used for the detailed examination of phase composition and morphology. The magnetic, dielectric, and ferroelectric properties were investigated. The optimal phase composition in the BaTiO3/NiFe2O4 composite, sintered at 1150 °C, resulted in a wide frequency range stability. Additionally, particular phase composition indicates favorable properties such as low conductivity and ideal-like hysteresis loop behavior. The favorable properties of BaTiO3/NiFe2O4 make this particular composite an ideal material choice for further studies on applications of multi-ferroic devices.

AB - To investigate the effect of synthesis procedure and sintering temperature on the functional properties of perovskite/spinel ceramics, BaTiO3/CoFe2O4 composites were prepared by thermal decomposition, coprecipitation, and microemulsion method, and sintered at 1150°C and 1300°C. The phase composition and morphology of as-prepared powders as well as sintered ceramics were thoroughly examined by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with electron dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The dielectric and ferroelectric measurements were performed in detail. Generally, the samples sintered at 1300°C had better performances than those sintered at 1150°C. The composite synthesized by thermal decomposition and sintered at 1300 °C stands out among other prepared BaTiO3/CoFe2O4 ceramics, owing to high stability in the wide frequency range and low leakage currents. The obtained results indicate that such composite might be successfully applied as a functional multiferroic.

AB - In the search for environmentally friendly materials with a wide range of properties, polymer composites have emerged as a promising alternative due to their multifunctional properties. This study focuses on the synthesis of composite materials consisting of four components: bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) modified with magnetic Fe3O4 , and a mixture of BaTiO3 (BT) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). The BT powder was mechanically activated prior to mixing with PVDF. The influence of BT mechanical activation and BNC with magnetic particles on the PVDF matrix was investigated. The obtained composite films’ structural characteristics, morphology, and dielectric properties are presented. This research provides insights into the relationship between mechanical activation of the filler and structural and dielectric properties in the PVDF/BT/BNC/Fe3O4 system, creating the way for the development of materials with a wide range of diverse properties that support the concept of green technologies.

AB - In this study, levan from Bacillus licheniformis NS032 was modified in an aqueous medium by octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA), and the properties of the obtained derivatives were studied. The maximum efficiency in the synthesis reaction was achieved at 40 °C and a polysaccharide slurry concentration of 30 %. Increasing the reagent concentration (2–10 %) led to an increase in the degree of substitution (0.016–0.048). Structures of derivatives were confirmed by FTIR and NMR. Scanning electronic microscopy, thermogravimetry, and dynamic light scattering analyses showed that the derivatives with degrees of substitution of 0.025 and 0.036 retained levan's porous structure and thermostability and showed better colloidal stability than the native polysaccharide. The intrinsic viscosity of derivatives increased upon modification, while the surface tension of the 1 % solution was lowered to 61 mN/m. Oil-in-water emulsions prepared with sunflower oil (10 % and 20 %) by mechanical homogenization and 2 and 10 % derivatives in the continuous phase showed mean oil droplet sizes of 106–195 μm, while the distribution curves exhibited bimodal character. The studied derivatives have a good capacity to stabilize emulsions, as they have a creaming index ranging from 73 % to 94 %. The OSA-modified levans could have potential applications in new formulations of emulsion-based systems.

AB - This study investigates the effects of ultrasound, in combination with chemical pretreatments, on the quality attributes (total phenolic and carotenoid content, antioxidant activity (2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl assay (DPPH)), ferric-reducing ability (FRAP), CIE L* a* b* color, non-enzymatic browning, rehydration ratio, textural and morphological properties) of red pepper subjected to drying (hot air drying or freeze drying). The fractional factorial design was used to assess the impact of factors. The global Derringer desirability function was used to determine the optimal conditions for the best quality attributes of dried pepper. The drying method influenced total phenolic content, a* (redness), and initial rehydration ratio; pretreatment time significantly affected FRAP antiradical activity, a*, chroma and non-browning index, while pH-value had a significant effect on the texture of dried pepper. Non-enzymatic browning was reduced to 72.6%, while the DPPH antioxidant capacity of freeze-dried peppers was enhanced from 4.2% to 71.9%. Ultrasonic pretreatment led to changes in the pepper morphology, while potassium metabisulfite (KMS) was a more effective additive than citric acid.

AB - Arsenite–humic acid-binding process was investigated using the Isothermal Titration Calorimetry(ITC). The ITC data were successfully (R2=0.996-0.936) interpreted by applying the MNIS model, enabling thermodynamic parameters to be determined. The MNIS model was adjusted to the arsenite–HA binding process assuming hydrogen bonding as the dominant type of interaction in the system.Negative enthalpy change values indicated the arsenite–HAs binding as an exothermic process.Negative ΔG values (-(27.85-26.83) kJ mol-1) pointed out to spontaneous binding reaction, leading tothe formation of the arsenite–HA complexes. High binding constants values ((7.57-5.02)105 M-1)clearly demonstrated pronounced binding affinity. As ΔS values (0.041-0.027) kJ mol-1 K-1) wereapparently positive, but close to zero, and ΔH>ΔS, the reaction could be considered enthalpy driven.Reaction heats and H values (-(18.96-15.64) kJ mol-1) confirmed hydrogen bonds as the mostascendant interaction type in the arsenite–HA complex. Thermodynamic and reaction parametersclearly indicated that arsenite–HA complexes are formed at common soil pH values, confirming thepossible influence of humic acids on increased As mobility, and its reduced bioavailability.

AB - One of the most important means of controlling the operation of coal-fired power plant (CFPP) is the continuous monitoring of naturally occurring activity concentrations of radionuclides contained primarily in coal and, consequently, in ash and slag samples, the main coal combustion products that must be disposed of in landfills due to their high production. The activity concentrations of the naturally occurring radionuclides 238U, 235U, 226Ra, 210Pb, 232Th, and 40K, which could potentially be released into the environment as a result of the CFPP operation, are regularly monitored in the samples of coal, slag, and fly ash, as well as in the samples of ash piles on the active and passive cassettes and in the soil sampled at lesser and greater distances from the CFPP. The aim of this work is to analyse the results of the multi-year activity concentration measurements carried out in the period from 2010 to 2022. The annual activity concentration values measured for each studied radionuclide and each of the seven sample types were observed as a chronological sequence of data forming discrete time series, which, according to the results of statistical analysis, may be described as white noise processes.

The annual activity concentration values measured for each studied radionuclide and each of the seven sample types were observed as a chronological sequence of data forming discrete time series, which, according to the results of statistical analysis, may be described as white noise processes.",

AB - Despite presenting a practical approach for the characterization of the environmental risk of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) derived from steel production facilities, the analysis of the spatial distribution of bioavailable PTEs concentrations in the soil is frequently overlooked in the management of polluted sites. In this study, the diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA)-extractable forms of PTEs were investigated in soils surrounding the largest Serbian steel production plant. The correlation and geostatistical analysis indicated their pronounced variability suggesting the anthropogenic origin of most investigated elements, apparently from the steel production facility. The detailed visualization of variables and observations derived by self-organizing maps (SOMs) revealed the homologies in PTEs’ distribution patterns, implying the common origin of some elements. These observations were confirmed by principal component analysis (PCA) and positive matrix factorization (PMF). The аpplied approach supports a comprehensive assessment of contaminated sites' ecological and health risks and provides a basis for soil remediation.

AB - Gully erosion leads to the formation of deep and wide channels that increase the risk of soil loss, flooding, and
water pollution. In addition, this process reduces the productivity and viability of agricultural land and natural
ecosystems. Preventing gully erosion is critical for maintaining ecological balance and preserving natural resources in certain areas. This paper presents a methodology integrating remote sensing and nuclear techniques to
study gully erosion. The morphometric characterization of gullies using 360-degree camera photogrammetry was
introduced as a new method in erosion research. This approach aims to investigate the suitability of unmanned
aerial vehicle and terrestrial photogrammetry for modeling gullies, to study the variability of erosion processes in
gullies at a small scale, and to compare the differences in erosion intensity between nearby gullies. The study’s
objectives include identifying the effective and economical method for gullies monitoring and providing a
starting point for controlling and safeguarding gullies. Mainly erosion process was detected in the studied gullies,
while deposition was identified at only 2 out of 39 sampling locations. The results showed an average soil
redistribution rate of 16.2 t ha− 1 yr− 1 and coefficients of variation of 32%, 59%, and 91% for three investigated
gullies. It was determined that aerial photogrammetry methods were not practical under the conditions prevailing in the study area. Highly detailed 3D models of the gullies were created using 360-degree photogrammetry. It was confirmed that the micro-relief obtained by photogrammetric modeling is an essential contribution
to erosion research. The 360-degree camera photogrammetry serves as a reliable tool for analyzing the
morphology of gullies and, in perspective, tracking changes in gully systems over time or monitoring the
effectiveness of the applied protection measures.

AB - The gully erosion is one of the most significant land degradation processes. Although gully erosion significantly threatens agricultural productivity and natural ecosystems, European land management strategies frequently need more reliable data on environmental conditions governing this process. This study presents a methodology that integrates remote sensing and nuclear techniques for examining gully erosion (Đokić et al., 2023). It introduces a novel approach to erosion research by employing 360-degree camera photogrammetry to characterize gullies morphometrically. The main objectives of this approach are to evaluate the applicability of unmanned aerial vehicles and terrestrial photogrammetry for modeling gullies, to study small-scale erosion processes within gullies, compare erosion intensity between adjacent gullies, and determine the most effective and cost-efficient method for monitoring gullies. A total of 39 soil samples were taken in three studied gullies. The results revealed an average soil redistribution rate of 16.2 t ha−1 yr−1 and coefficients of variation of 32%, 59%, and 91% for the gullies. The estimated erosion rate varies from a minimum of 0.1 t ha−1 yr−1 to a maximum of 34.3 t ha−1 yr−1. Soil deposition was identified at only two sampling sites, 1.1 and 2 t ha−1 yr−1. Highly detailed 3D models of the gullies were created using 360-degree photogrammetry. The micro-relief obtained through modeling proved to be an essential aspect of advanced erosion research.

AB - The phenolic composition and antioxidant activity of wine and fermented pomace (FP) from Cabernet Sauvignon grapes harvested at three ripening stages were evaluated using LC-MS/MS and spectrophotometric analyses. An investigation of grey mold’s (Botrytis cinerea) influence on wine phenolic content modulation was conducted as well. Finally, the influence of the plant’s ripening stage on the dynamics of the phenolic compounds extracted from wine and FP obtained from fully ripe grapes was evaluated. In this study, the content of catechin, epicatechin, quercetin, and p-coumaric, gallic, and syringic acids was analyzed. Wine and FP were obtained after extended maceration during the spontaneous and inoculated fermentation of fully ripe grapes. When comparing the wine and FP obtained from véraison, fully ripe, and overripe grapes, catechin was the most abundant in wine (40.13 ± 3.25 mg/L) and quercetin in FP (10.96 ± 0.14 mg/kg). A decrease in analyzed phenolic compounds was noticed in wine produced from grapes affected by Botrytis cinerea, and the highest depletion was found for quercetin. The use of a winemaking technique that involved differing maceration periods and inoculation using yeasts as well as spontaneous fermentation significantly modulated the phenolic content of derived wines and FP. The dynamics of the phenolic compounds extracted into wine, evaluated using a principal component analysis (PCA), highlighted contents of catechin and epicatechin. After a decrease in maceration, the PCA revealed a notable content of gallic and syringic acids, as well as quercetin, in samples of FP. This study offers a perspective for future research and the development of functional food with a high content of phenolic compounds originating from red grape products, such as wine and fermented pomace.

AB - Newly designed mesoporous brushite-metakaolin-based geopolymer materials were examined with an idea for using this material as a potential adsorbent for Pb(II) removal from aqueous solutions. As a starting component for geopolymer synthesis, a natural raw kaolinite clay with theaddition of 2 wt.%, 4 wt.%, 6 wt.%, 8 wt.%, and 10 wt.% of pure brushite was used. Phase, structural, morphological, and adsorption properties of newly synthesized mesoporous brushite-metakaolin geopolymer materials were examined in detail by the means of XRPD, FTIR, SEM-EDS, BET/BJH, and ICP-OES methods. The ICP-OES results showed that the synthesized material samples with 2 wt.%, 4 wt.%, and 6 wt.% of brushite possess significant adsorption properties and the mechanisms of the adsorption process can be attributed to chemisorption. The most notable result is that brushite-metakaolin-geopolymer with 2 wt.% of brushite have the best efficiency removal, more than 85% of Pb(II).

abstract = "Newly designed mesoporous brushite-metakaolin-based geopolymer materials were examined with an idea for using this material as a potential adsorbent for Pb(II) removal from aqueous solutions. The most notable result is that brushite-metakaolin-geopolymer with 2 wt.% of brushite have the best efficiency removal, more than 85% of Pb(II).",

AB - The effect of Ca2+ amount and sintering temperature on mechanical properties of geopolymer-brushite (GPB) binders was investigated. Brushite and raw abandoned kaolinite clay thermally transformed into metakaolin were used for GPB synthesis. The complete phase and structural analyses were performed by X-ray powder diffraction, and Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The pore-filling effect as a consequence of Ca2+ ions incorporation into the hybrid geopolymer networks improved the compressive strength. On the other hand, the chosen biscuit sintering at 800 and 900oC caused the phase transformation of brushite into calcium pyrophosphate, which negatively affected the compressive strength of such materials. The obtained results indicate that the usage of relatively high sintering temperatures is not always the necessary step for producing geopolymer-based types of cement with prominent mechanical properties.

AB - Due to the growing number of people infected with the new coronavirus globally, which weakens immunity, there has been an increase in bacterial infections. Hence, knowledge about simple and low-cost synthesis methods of materials with good structural and antimicrobial properties is of great importance. A material obtained through the combination of a nanoscale hydroxyapatite material (with good biocompatibility) and titanium dioxide (with good degradation properties of organic molecules) can absorb and decompose bacteria. In this investigation, three different synthesis routes used to prepare hydroxyapatite/titanium dioxide nanomaterials are examined. The morphology and semiquantitative chemical composition are characterized by scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDX). The obtained materials’ phase and structural characterization are determined using the X-ray powder diffraction method (XRD). The crystallite sizes of the obtained materials are in the range of 8 nm to 15 nm. Based on XRD peak positions, the hexagonal hydroxyapatite phases are formed in all samples along with TiO2 anatase and rutile phases. According to SEM and TEM analyses, the morphology of the prepared samples differs depending on the synthesis route. The EDX analysis confirmed the presence of Ti, Ca, P, and O in the obtained materials. The IR spectroscopy verified the vibration bands characteristic for HAp and titanium. The investigated materials show excellent antimicrobial and photocatalytic properties.

AB - The emerging threat of bacterial resistance to antibiotics prompts the urgent search for biomaterials for the treatment of infectious disease. Here we report on the synthesis and characterization of a multiphasic nanocomposite comprising magnetic iron oxide and silver nanoparticles. The method of synthesis involved the combustion of a metalorganic complex and reduction of the silver ions that were exchanged and/or adsorbed on the surface of iron oxide. Different physical and chemical treatments coupled to the reduction process, including ultrasound and Lugol's iodine solution, respectively, homogenized the distribution of the silver nanoparticles on the iron oxide phase. Remarkably, using ascorbic acid as a reductant enhanced the magnetic properties of the material as a result of the reduction of the magnetic matrix alongside the silver cations. The treatment with ultrasound detached large amounts of silver from the iron oxide phase and resulted in the lowest amount of silver incorporated in the nanocomposite. Despite that, this treatment led to the highest antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative strains, indicating that the homogeneity of the distribution of silver on the iron oxide matrix is a more important determinant of the antibacterial performance than the amount of silver incorporated in the material. At the same time, the treatment with Lugol's iodine equally increased the distribution homogeneity, but induced excessive ion exchange and crystal lattice substitutions, thereby adversely affecting the antibacterial performance. This has indicated that the mode of binding silver to iron oxide can compensate for the positive effects of homogeneous distribution with respect to the antibacterial performance.

AB - The rise of innovation in the electrical industry is driven by the controlled design of new materials. The hybrid materials based on magnetite/nanocellulose are highly interesting due to their various applications in medicine, ecology, catalysis and electronics. In this study, the structure and morphology of nanocellulose/magnetite hybrid nanomaterials were investigated. The effect of nanocellulose loading on the crystal structure of synthesized composites was investigated by XRD and FTIR methods. The presented study reveals that the interaction between the cellulose and magnetic nanoparticles depends on the nanocellulose content. Further, a transition from cellulose II to cellulose I allomorph is observed. SEM and EDS are employed to determine the variation in morphology with changes in component concentrations. By the calculation of magnetic interactions between adjacent Fe3+ and Fe2+ ions within composites, it is determined that ferromagnetic coupling predominates.

AB - Nickel ferrite nanoparticles were synthesized via thermal decomposition of β-diketonato complexes of nickel(II) and iron(III). The mechano-chemical activation of the complex precursors was used to ensure the increase in the reaction activity and consequently reduce thermal decomposition temperature. The prepared sample was thoroughly characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, FT-IR spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with electron dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). X-ray powder diffraction and FT-IR confirmed the spinel phase of the investigated powder. SEM and TEM revealed the ultrafine nature of nanosized polygonal particles, with a pronounced agglomeration effect. The capacity for electrocatalytic applications was examined using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Electrocatalytic measurements pointed out that the addition of 5% of nickel ferrite as a modifier to carbon paste electrode caused a current increase and a decrease of the EIS semicircle. Further increase in the amount of the modifier decreased heterogeneity of the electrode surface and served as excellent sensor for the detection of gallic acid in the concentration range from 1 to 10 µM with the detection limit of 0.27 µM. This unambiguously indicated the significant improvement in electrode transfer rate and better characteristics of the diffusion layer. © 2022, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

AB - The main goal of this work was to estimate the influence of carboxyl and phenolic groups, as well as aromatic, aliphatic and polysaccharide components, on the soil humic acids (HA) self-aggregation process. Soil HAs (leptosol and regosol) were separated using base resin getting fractions with different functional group contents. Blocking of carboxyl groups was performed using the esterification procedure to estimate the participation of each functional group in the HA aggregation. The presence of HA structural components was evaluated by potentiometric titration and ATR-FTIR. The aggregation was monitored at pH 3 using dynamic light scattering. Results indicated that the higher group content, the HA aggregation is less pronounced. A significant positive correlation of aliphatic C and aggregate size revealed their dominant influence in the HA self-aggregation. A lower abundance of aliphatic C in HA fractions could be considered as not sufficient to start the process. An increase of aromatic C in esters likely pointed out to its participation in hydrophobic bonding and, consequently, more pronounced aggregation. The relation of HA self-aggregate size with carboxyl and phenolic group, as well as aliphatic C, at low pH, could be considered universal regardless of the structural characteristics of the original or modified HA forms.

abstract = "The main goal of this work was to estimate the influence of carboxyl and phenolic groups, as well as aromatic, aliphatic and polysaccharide components, on the soil humic acids (HA) self-aggregation process. The relation of HA self-aggregate size with carboxyl and phenolic group, as well as aliphatic C, at low pH, could be considered universal regardless of the structural characteristics of the original or modified HA forms.",

AB - Removal of the β-blocker atenolol from an aqueous solution was studied using TiO2/zeolites, prepared by a simple and cost-effective solid-state dispersion method. Synthetic zeolites 13X and ZSM-5 (Si/Al = 40) and natural zeolite clinoptilolite were used as one component of the hybrid materials, whereas TiO2 nanocrystals obtained from TiO2 nanotubes and P25 TiO2 nanoparticles were used as the other. The synthesized materials were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet–visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectroscopy. The photocatalytic activity for the degradation of atenolol was investigated under simulated solar light. Additionally, the effect of initial pH on atenolol removal and the reusability of prepared catalysts were tested. The best loading of TiO2 was 20 wt% over all investigated zeolites. The degradation of atenolol followed the pseudo-first-order kinetics. The photocatalytic degradation of atenolol after 70 min of irradiation was ~ 50% for TiO2/13X materials, ~ 45% for clinoptilolite combined with P25 TiO2 and ~ 57% for clinoptilolite combined with TiO2 nanocrystals obtained from TiO2 nanotubes. The results showed the highest removal efficiency after 70 min of irradiation for ZSM-5 combined with P25 TiO2 (~ 94%), followed by ZSM-5 combined with TiO2 nanocrystals obtained from TiO2 nanotubes (~ 88%) at near-neutral pH (~ 6.5). The total removal of atenolol from an aqueous solution for TiO2/ZSM-5 materials resulted from two processes: adsorption and photocatalytic degradation. The TiO2/ZSM-5 photocatalysts can be easily recovered and reused as their activity was preserved after four cycles.

AB - Intensive broiler chicken production involves different lighting regimes, which affects a natural cycle of secretion of melatonin, a hormone included in multiple physiological processes in a bird's body. This research aimed to determine the effects of dietary melatonin supplementation during the first two weeks of broiler chickens' life, bred under constant 24 h lighting, on their health and some hematological, biochemical, and production parameters. The study lasted 6 weeks. Three hundred and twenty 1-day chickens were divided into two groups (control - C and experimental - M), with four replications and 40 chickens in each replica. In the first two weeks (the first phase of the study), a continuous lighting mode 24L: 0D was applied. Group M was receiving a diet supplemented with 30 mg/kg synthetic melatonin only during the first phase. Group C had a diet without melatonin supplementation throughout the whole study. Melatonin addition had a statistically significant effect (P<0.01) on the mean values of body weight and daily weight gain at the end of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th week. The chickens of the experimental group have had a significantly higher value of the European Production Efficiency Factor (EPEF) (P<0.05). The results presented in this paper indicate a direct benefit in stress relief in broilers and a value of the organism's antioxidant system promotion, manifested by improved production performance and fattening efficiency.

AB - Dual templating approach, using hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), was employed in an attempt to synthesize hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolite. Amount of mesoporogen and the duration of aging of the precursor were varied. Majority of the synthesis routes resulted in phase separation, yielding separate ZSM-5 and amorphous mesoporous material. The relative amounts of the two phases were dependent on the CTAB amount ratio and also significantly on the duration of precursor aging before CTAB addition. One particular combination of the two factors led to the formation of a homogeneous hierarchical form of ZSM-5 with leafy morphology, consisting of intergrown thin crystalline sheets which formed flower-like structures. The hierarchical ZSM-5 possessed significant microporous (≈95 m2/g) and highly developed mesoporous surface (≈470 m2/g), with a relatively broad distribution of mesopore sizes (<20 nm). The acidity of all samples was studied in detail. Isothermal microcalorimetry/volumetry of ammonia adsorption provided quantitative data on the number and distribution of strength of acidic sites. In situ FTIR of pyridine and collidine adsorption was used to quantify Brønsted and Lewis acid sites, and to provide information on their location - in the micropores or mesopores/external surface. The hierarchical ZSM-5 possessed both Lewis and Brønsted acidity, with Brønsted sites located mainly in the micropores. All samples were fully characterized using XRD, low temperature nitrogen adsorption, FESEM and EDS. The synthetic route used for obtaining the ZSM-5 zeolite with flower-like morphology is a simple strategy for preparing hierarchical ZSM-5 forms targeting enhanced diffusivity and accessibility of catalytically active sites.

AB - The UV-B represents the minor fraction of the solar spectrum, while UV-C is not contained in natural solar radiation, but both radiation types can cause damaging effects in plants. Cell walls (CWs) are one of the targets for external stressors. Juvenile P. omorika trees were treated either with 21 day-high doses UV-B or with 7 day- UV-C in open-top chambers. Using spectroscopic and biochemical techniques, it was shown that the response to UV radiation includes numerous modifications in needle CW structure: relative content of xylan, xyloglucan, lignin and cellulose decreased; cellulose crystallinity changed; yield of lignin monomers with stronger connection of C[dbnd]C in side chain with the ring increased; re-distribution of inter- and intra-polymer H-bonds occurred. The recovery was mediated by an increase in the activities and changes in isoform profiles of CW bound covalent peroxidases (POD) and polyphenol oxidases (PO) (UV–B), and ionic POD and covalent PO (UV–C). A connection between activities of specific POD/PO isoforms and phenolic species (m- and p-coumaric acid, pinoresinol and cinnamic acid derivatives) was demonstrated, and supported by changes in the sRNA profile. In vivo fluorometry showed phenolics accumulation in needle epidermal CWs. These results imply transversal connections between polymers and changed mechanical properties of needle CW as a response to UV. The CW alterations enabled maintenance of physiological functions, as indicated by the preserved chlorophyll content and/or organization. The current study provides evidence that in conifers, needle CW response to both UV-B and UV-C includes biochemical modifications and structural remodeling. © 2021 Elsevier Masson SAS
