AB  - The second most important source of indoor radon, after soil beneath dwelling, is building material. With the increase in environmental awareness and new energy-saving policies, residents tend to replace the existing windows with tighter windows, which leads to a decrease in air exchange rate and consequently an increase in indoor radon concentration. In case of low exchange rates, dose caused by inhalation of radon and its progeny can exceed external dose originating from the radium content in the surrounding building material. In this paper, surface exhalation rates of radon ( 222 Rn) and thoron ( 220 Rn) from typical building materials used for construction and interior decoration of houses in Serbia were investigated. Surface exhalation rate measurements were performed using the closed-chamber method, while concentrations of radon and thoron in the chamber were continuously measured using an active device, RTM1688-2, produced by SARAD® GmbH. Finally, the impact of the replacement of windows on the indoor radon concentration was estimated.

AB  - It is well-known that radon is the second important human carcinogen for lung cancer, after smoking. The major sources of indoor radon concentrations are soil and building material. Under certain conditions, a dose received from the inhalation of radon and its progenies can be higher than a dose received from the external exposure due to radium concentration in building materials. In this contribution, the results of the radon and thoron exhalation rate measurement from 9 commonly used building materials are reported. Exhalation rate measurements were performed with accumulation chamber method using active device for measurement of radon concentration. © 2019 RAD Association. All rights reserved.

AB  - Growing concern for radiological and nuclear safety and growing use of radiation protection instruments by both professionals and lay persons increase the need for low cost and reliable instrumentation. The aim of this work was to develop a radiation protection instrument that will be both affordable to the widest radiation protection community, including the citizen networks and provide metrologically sound data. The instrument was based on a Geiger-Muller tube, which was tested before and after the energy compensation by lead foils. Instrument energy, angular and dose rate dependence was determined for different tube compensations and the optimum compensation allowing full compliance with relevant standards was identified. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd

Response of TL and OSL passive personal dosimetry systems in poly-energetic and multi-directional photon radiation fields

AB  - The aim of this paper is to examine the energy and angular responses of thermoluminescent dosimeters containing either MTS-N (LiF:Mg,Ti) or MCP-N (LiF:Mg,Cu,P) detector materials, and of the InLight optically stimulated luminescent dosimeters containing Al2O3:C detectors. Ten radiation qualities, with mean energies ranging from 24 keV to 1.25 MeV, and five angles of incidence, between 0° and 80°, were used for this purpose. The dosimeter response measure of quality were the IEC 62387 requirements. The experimental results show that the MTS-N-based and the InLight dosimeters performed in line with the standard's criteria. On the other hand, the MCP-N-based dosimeters exhibited a pronounced under-response around the energy of 120 keV, which resulted in deviations from the standard's conditions for both the energy and angular responses. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd

Nanoparticle shapes: Quantification by elongation, convexity and circularity measures

AB  - The goal of the nanoparticle synthesis is, first of all, the production of nanoparticles that will be more similar in size and shape. This is very important for the possibility of studying and applying nanomaterials because of their characteristics that are very sensitive to size and shape such as, for example, magnetic properties. In this paper, we propose the shape analysis of the nanoparticles using three shape descriptors – elongation, convexity and circularity. Experimental results were obtained by using TEM images of hematite nanoparticles that were, first of all, subjected to segmentation in order to obtain isolated nanoparticles, and then the values of elongation, convexity and circularity were measured. Convexity C x ( S ) is regarded as the ratio between shape’s area and area of the its convex hull. The convexity measure defines the degree to which a shape differs from a convex shape while the circularity measure defines the degree to which a shape differs from an ideal circle. The range of convexity and circularity values is (0, 1], while the range of elongation values is [1, ∞). The circle has lowest elongation (ε = 1), while it has biggest convexity and circularity values ( C x = 1; C = 1). The measures ε( S ), C x ( S ), C ( S ) proposed and used in the experiment have the few desirable properties and give intuitively expected results. None of the measures is good enough to describe all the shapes, and therefore it is suggested to use a variety of measures so that the shapes can be described better and then classify and control during the synthesis process.

AB  - It is indicated that the exposure to radon originating from the building materials is not negligible and the radon exhalation measurement should get more attention in the future. The experience with four different methods of the exhalation measurement, established in our laboratory for the purpose of the intercomparison is reported. AB  - The variations in the threshold voltage shift in p-channel power VDMOSFET during the gamma ray irradiation was investigated in the dose range from 10 to 100 Gy. The investigations were performed without the gate bias and with 5 V gate bias. The devices with 5 V gate bias exhibit a linear dependence between the threshold voltage shift and the radiation dose. The densities of radiation-induced fixed and switching traps were determined from the sub-threshold I-V characteristics using the midgap technique. It was shown that the creation of fixed traps is dominant during the irradiation. The possible mechanisms responsible for the fixed and switching traps creation are also analyzed in this paper.

It was shown that the creation of fixed traps is dominant during the irradiation. The possible mechanisms responsible for the fixed and switching traps creation are also analyzed in this paper.",

AB  - Electronic personal dosimeters (EPDs) are increasingly being used alongside conventional thermoluminescent dosimeters to measure the dose of legal record in terms of personal dose equivalent. Therefore, it is of great importance to execute performance tests of these dosimeters in photon fields of various energies and at various angles of incidence. This testing is done in order to simulate the behavior of these dosimeters in realistic multidirectional polyenergetic ionizing radiation fields. Tests of accuracy, linearity, energy response, and angular response have been performed on 10 EPDs from multiple manufacturers. Various radiation qualities have been used in the energy range from 33 keV to 1.33 MeV and for angles of incidence 0 degrees to 80 degrees. This research proves that many of the EPDs tested performed according to the manufacturers specifications and the requirements of the international standards regarding personal dosimetry.

AB  - With an increase in the awareness of the need to save energy, residents tend to live in dwellings with increasingly tight windows and doors, thus reducing the ventilation rate of indoor air which leads to an increased accumulation of radon indoors. Having in mind that a dose from an exposure to inhaled radon and its progenies can be higher than a dose received from radium in building materials, it is suggested that radon exhalation measurements should receive due attention. In this contribution, the authors compare results gathered using a few methods for radon exhalation measurement and discuss its merits and demerits.

AB  - U radu je merena ekshalacija radona iz bigra iz Niške Banje poznatom po povišenoj
koncentraciji 226Ra. Bigar zbog svoje velike poroznosti i visoke koncentracije radijuma
je idealan materijal za testiranje parametara od kojih zavisi brzina ekshalacije. U radu
je razmatrana zavisnost ekshalacije u odnosu na vlažnost kao i na sprašenost uzorka.
Brzina ekshalacije je merena metodom zatvorene komore, a sama koncentracija radona
aktivnim uređajem. Dobijeni rezultati ukazuju da brzina ekshalacije raste sa povećanjem vlažnosti uzorka i smanjenjem veličine zrna.
AB  - In this contribution, radon exhalation rate from travertine originating from Niška
Banja, Serbia was measured. This particular travertine, with a high 226Ra concentration
and high porosity, is ideal for testing various parameters that can influence radon
exhalation rate. The radon exhalation rate was investigated for different sizes of grains.
Grain sizes were dived into 4 groups: 1) 2.1 - 1.6 mm, 2.) 1.6 - 1.2 mm, 3.) 1.2 - 0.7 mm
i 4.) < 0.7 mm. Influence of the humidity on radon exhalation rate was also
investigated. Samples with the smallest grain size were exposed to 3 different levels of
humidity (dry sample, and two samples in which water content was around 10% and
20% of the mass of dry sample. An accumulation chamber method with an active device
RTM1688-2 was used to estimate radon exhalation rate from continuous measurement
of radon in the chamber. Obtained results indicate that radon exhalation rate is
increasing with an increase of humidity of the sample and with an decrease of grain
size.

AB  - In this paper we give an overview of radiation effects in emergent, non-volatile memory technologies. Investigations into radiation hardness of resistive random access memory, ferroelectric random access memory, magneto-resistive random access memory, and phase change memory are presented in cases where these memory devices were subjected to different types of radiation. The obtained results proved high radiation tolerance of studied devices making them good candidates for application in radiation-intensive environments.

The Application of Experimental Design Methodology for the Investigation of Liquid Radioactive Waste Treatment

AB  - The sorption properties of waste facade, brick, and asphalt sample towards Sr(II), Co(II), and Ni(II) ions from single and multicomponent solutions were investigated. The highest sorption capacity was found for Ni(II) ions, while the most effective sorbent was facade. Simplex Centroid Mixture Design was used in order to investigate the sorption processes of ions from solutions with different composition as well as the competition between the cations. Based on the statistical analysis results, the equations for data modeling were proposed. According to the observations, the investigated solid matrices can be effectively used for the liquid radioactive waste treatment. Furthermore, the applied methodology turned out to be an easy and operational way for the investigations of multicomponent sorption processes.

AB  - The measurement results of ambient dose equivalent rate in an aircraft, performed by a standard portable dosimeter, at a non-commercial flight Belgrade - Podgorica at altitudes up to 9000 meters, are shown. By numerical interpolation of the measurement results, a functional dependency of the ambient dose equivalent rate on the altitude of the airplane flight is determined, obtaining a good agreement with the reference values. For commercial airlines in the Balkan region, total ambient dose equivalent, regarding the aircraft crew occupationally exposed to radiation in the course of a flight, was calculated and the maximum permitted number of flight hours per year, was estimated.

AB  - Manipulation of unsealed radiation sources in nuclear medicine (NM) departments involves non-uniform exposure to staff and high skin doses to the upper extremities from direct and scattered radiations. Conducted studies have shown that the annual dose limits could be exceeded and the continuous dose monitoring of NM workers hands is needed. The aim of this article is to show results of hand dose monitoring in terms of operational quantity H-p(0.07) for occupationally exposed NM workers to beta and gamma radiations in the largest NM centre in Serbia. Dose assessment was done by means of thermoluminescent ring dosemeters DXT-RAD (LiF:Mg,Ti). Monthly and annual doses were evaluated for a 5-y period (2010-14). Monitored NM staff was categorised according to the type of work, as nurses, radiographers, laboratory technicians and radiochemists. Performed evaluation showed that annual hand doses were within the annual limit for all staff categories, but further optimisation of working practice is needed.

AB  - In the era of the energy saving policy (i.e. more air tight doors and windows), the radon exhaled from building materials tends to increase its concentration in indoor air, which increases the importance of the measurement of radon exhalation from building materials. This manuscript presents a novel method of the radon exhalation measurement using only a HPGe detector or any other gamma spectrometer. Comparing it with the already used methods of radon exhalation measurements, this method provides the measurement of the emanation coefficient, the radon diffusion length and the radon exhalation rate, all within the same measurement, which additionally defines materials radon protective properties. Furthermore it does not necessitate additional equipment for radon or radon exhalation measurement, which simplifies measurement technique, and thus potentially facilitates introduction of legal obligation for radon exhalation determination in building materials. AB  - In this paper, the results of pMOS dosemeters sensitivity to X-ray radiation and 28-d fading at room temperature are presented. Two types of dosemeters were used, which differ in gate oxide layer thickness. The sensitivity of pMOS dosemeters with gate oxide layer thickness of 1 A mu m was followed in the dose intervals of 1 to 10 cGy and 10 to 100 cGy, whereas that of 400 nm was in the interval of 10 to 100 cGy. The sensitivity was characterised by the threshold voltage shift, which was determined as a function of absorbed radiation dose and time after irradiation. Linear dependence between threshold voltage shift and absorbed radiation dose was established, as well as that considerable fading occurs during the first few days after irradiation. The mechanisms responsible for threshold voltage shift during irradiation and latter annealing have been also discussed.

Natural Radioactivity Level in Materials Used for Medieval Vaulting in the Territory of the Central Balkan Region

AB  - This work presents the results of an investigation undertaken to determine the level of natural radioactivity in the traditional building materials used for medieval indoor vaulted constructions in the territory of the central Balkan region. Indoor radiation exposure varies appreciably if it comes from the earth building materials, hence the presence of natural radioisotopes of Ra-226, Th-232, and K-40 in masonry vaulted constructions was analyzed using gamma ray spectrometry. In addition, the internal health hazard index, the absorbed dose rates and the effective annual doses were calculated. The results were then compared both with the reported data from the previous studies concerning the territory of the Balkan Peninsula, as well as with the worldwide values for the materials of historic buildings. The results obtained from the materials examined in this paper all showed the radioactivity levels below the maximum permitted values.

AB  - The paper examines the effects of radiation on the electrical characteristics of monocrystalline silicon and germanium. Samples of monocrystalline silicon and germanium are irradiated under controlled laboratory conditions in the field of neutron, X- and gamma-radiation. Change of the samples specific resistance was measured dependent on the radiation dose with the type of radiation as a parameter. Next, the dependence of the samples resistance on temperature was recorded (in the impurities region and in intrinsic region) with the previously absorbed dose as a parameter. The results were statistically analyzed and explained on the basis of radiation effects in solids. The results are compared with those obtained by using Monte Carlo method. A good agreement was confirmed by the mentioned experimental investigation.

A Method of Approximate Greens Function for Solving Reflection of Particles in Plane Geometry

AB  - A method for approximate analytical solution of transport equation for particles in plane geometry is developed by solving Fredholm integral equations. Kernels of these equations are the Greens functions for infinite media treated approximately. Analytical approximation of Greens function is based on decomposition of the functions into terms that are exactly analytically solved and those which are approximately obtained by usual low order DPN approximation. Transport of particles in half-space is treated, and reflection coefficient is determined in the form of an analytical function. Comparison with the exact numerical solution and other approximate methods justified the proposed analytical technique.

AB  - Fluoroscopy procedures may lead to increased radiation exposure of radiologists and other staff members. The objective of the study is to assess whole body radiation doses and doses to the eye in fluoroscopy procedures, based on measurements that allow for estimates of occupational doses when personal dosimeters have not been used. Four geometrical configurations were considered: overcouch x-ray tube with and without table mounted lead rubber curtains in place, undercouch x-ray tube with horizontal x-ray beam and undercouch x-ray tube with vertical x-ray beam. The doses were estimated using distribution of the scattered radiation and typical workload, as well as the pattern of used of protective tools. Estimated effective dose was in the range from few to 60 mu Sv per procedure for radiologist, and from few to 20 mu Sv per procedure for radiographer, depending on the geometrical configuration and level of personal protection. Corresponding unprotected eye doses were estimated to be in the range 0.03 - 2.8 mSv per procedure for radiologist and 0.02-0.78 mSv for radiographer. The presented results allowed for realistic estimations of the occupational whole body dose and dose to the eyes from the workload of the staff members and from the level of use of radiation protection tools when personal dosimeters have not been regularly used.

abstract = "Fluoroscopy procedures may lead to increased radiation exposure of radiologists and other staff members. The objective of the study is to assess whole body radiation doses and doses to the eye in fluoroscopy procedures, based on measurements that allow for estimates of occupational doses when personal dosimeters have not been used. Four geometrical configurations were considered: overcouch x-ray tube with and without table mounted lead rubber curtains in place, undercouch x-ray tube with horizontal x-ray beam and undercouch x-ray tube with vertical x-ray beam. The doses were estimated using distribution of the scattered radiation and typical workload, as well as the pattern of used of protective tools. Estimated effective dose was in the range from few to 60 mu Sv per procedure for radiologist, and from few to 20 mu Sv per procedure for radiographer, depending on the geometrical configuration and level of personal protection. Corresponding unprotected eye doses were estimated to be in the range 0.03 - 2.8 mSv per procedure for radiologist and 0.02-0.78 mSv for radiographer. The presented results allowed for realistic estimations of the occupational whole body dose and dose to the eyes from the workload of the staff members and from the level of use of radiation protection tools when personal dosimeters have not been regularly used.",

AB  - This paper presents results of radiation resistance of different types of commercially available single- and poly-crystalline silicon solar cells. Sample cells were subjected to gamma radiation from gamma radiation source Co-60. Characteristic parameters of solar cells were extracted from obtained I-V curves: open circuit voltage, short circuit current, maximum power point voltage and current, efficiency, fill factor, and series resistance. Obtained results show the level of parameters degradation with purpose of increasing solar cells applications in radiation environments.

AB  - This paper investigates the output characteristics of photovoltaic solar cells working in hostile working conditions. Examined cells, produced by different innovative procedures, are available in the market. The goal was to investigate stability of electric characteristics of solar cells, which are used today in photovoltaic solar modules for charging rechargeable batteries which, coupled with batteries, supply various electronic systems such as radio repeaters on mountains tops, airplanes, mobile communication stations and other remote facilities. Charging of rechargeable batteries requires up to 25 % higher voltage compared to nominal output voltage of the battery. This paper presents results of research of solar cells, which also apply to cases in which continuous power supply is required.

Mathematical Modeling of Environmental Impacts of a Reactor Through the Air

AB  - This paper presents an algorithm for the calculation of internal and external doses as an integral part of the mathematical model of atmospheric dispersion. The air pollution dispersion model is used on average annual activity concentration in the air, deposition on soil and field of total annual dose to a hypothetical resident contaminated by air in the vicinity of a nuclear reactor. The results of modeling were compared with values from an IAEA publication for a given scenario of radionuclide emission to the atmospheric boundary layer. Due to small differences in the results, compared to the IAEA recommended model, the model presented in the paper can be used as a basis for this type of analysis.

Sensitivity of Radfet for Gamma and X-Ray Doses Used in Medicine

AB  - In this paper, the results of radiation sensitive field effect transistors (Al-gate p-channel metal-oxide-semiconductor field effect transistors) sensitivity to gamma and X-ray irradiation are presented. Radiation fields were created using Co-60 source for three dose ranges (0-1 Gy, 0-5 Gy, and 0-50 Gy), as well as X-ray unit of 280 kVp spectrum for a single dose range from 0 to 5 Gy. The sensitivity was characterized by the threshold voltage shift, determined from reader circuit measurements, as a function of absorbed radiation dose. It was shown that for the three dose ranges of gamma radiation, as well as for the X-ray range from 0 Gy to 5 Gy there is approximately a linear dependence between threshold voltage shift Delta V-T and radiation dose D. The application of positive bias of +5 Vat the RADFET gate during irradiation, for these ranges of gamma radiation, also for X-ray dose range, leads to the increase in Delta V-T and also, approximately a linear dependence between Delta V-T and D, is established. Moreover, it was shown that the sensitivity of RADFET is much higher in the case of X-ray irradiation then in the case of gamma-ray irradiation for the same dose range.

AB  - This paper discusses the possibility of applying the F-test and double t-test in problems related to the identification of number of radioactive isotopes in a contaminated area by using only counters for radiation detection. The descriptions of the F-test and the double t-test are given along with the corresponding tabular values that enable their implementation. Finally, the experiment is presented via two radioactive samples. The results of the experiment were treated in the manner proposed in the paper and satisfactory results were obtained.
