AB - In this work, we successfully prepared a modified cobalt oxide (Co3O4) carbon paste electrode to detect Levofloxacin (LEV). By synthesizing Co3O4 nanoparticles through the chemical coprecipitation method, the electrochemical properties of the electrode and LEV were thoroughly investigated using CV, SWV, and EIS, while material properties were scrutinized using ICP-OES, TEM, SEM, and XRD. The results showed that the prepared electrode displayed a better electrocatalytic response than the bare carbon paste electrode. After optimizing SWV, the electrode exhibited a wide linear working range from 1 to 85 μM at pH 5 of BRBS as the supporting electrolyte. The selectivity of the proposed method was satisfactory, with good repeatability and reproducibility, strongly suggesting a potential application for determining LEV in real samples, particularly in pharmaceutical formulations. The practicality of the approach was demonstrated through good recoveries, and the morphology of the materials was found to be closely related to other parameters, indicating that the developed method can provide a cost-effective, rapid, selective, and sensitive means for LEV monitoring. Overall, this project has made significant progress towards developing a reliable method for detecting LEV and has opened up new opportunities for future research in this field.

AB - In this study, we successfully prepared a modified nickel oxide (NiO) carbon paste electrode to detect gallic acid (GA). NiO nanoparticles were synthesized by the simple, organic solvent-free chemical coprecipitation method, and the electrochemical properties of the electrode and GA were thoroughly investigated using CV, SWV, and EIS, while morphological properties were examined using ICP-OES, TEM, SEM, and XRD. Excellent catalytic characteristics are displayed by the developed material which facilitates the interaction of the target with the electrode surface. The obtained electrochemical information showed that the incorporation of NiO nanoparticles to the carbon paste electrode effectively facilitates electron transfer processes and enriches the catalytic response of the carbon paste electrode. The fabricated NiO/CPE sensor showed a satisfactory linear relationship between peak current and GA concentration in the broad range of 0.2–100 μM and 100–200 μM with a low detection limit of 0.04 μM and limit of quantification of 0.12 μM at pH 3 of BRBS as supporting electrolyte. The selectivity of the proposed method was satisfactory, with acceptable stability, considerable repeatability, and accurate reproducibility. Moreover, the good practicability performance could be effectuated at the NiO/CPE sensor for the quantitative analysis of GA in bourtree, walnut, primrose, and chamomile tea samples. The results were compared with the standard DPPH test and statistical processing of the results was performed, which confirmed the excellent agreement between the two methods. The developed method can provide a cost-effective, rapid, selective, and sensitive means for GA monitoring. When compared to other works, the developed technique has a wider linear range and lower LOD and LOQ, which makes this work a very important reference for the highly sensitive analysis of GA in the field of food safety.

AB - In the present work, a nanocomposite, based on embedding Co-doped CeO2 nanoparticles into graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4), was applied to functionalize commercial glassy carbon paste. This is the first application of the electrochemical sensor, developed through the proposed procedure, in electrochemical sensing. The sensor was utilized for the electrochemical determination of organophosphate pesticide fenitrothion (FNT). Cyclic voltammetry identified reversible oxidation of FNT (oxidation at 0.18 V and reduction at 0.13 V) and additional reduction at 0.62 V vs. Ag/AgCl in HCl solution (pH =1). Theoretical calculations were carried out to model and elucidate experimentally observed redox processes. Special attention was devoted to modeling experimental conditions, and based on the obtained results, a detailed redox mechanism of the investigated analyte was proposed. This represents the first complete and unambiguous elucidation of the FNT redox mechanism, supported by joined experimental and theoretical data. Square wave voltammetry (SWV) was utilized for quantification, whereby the FNT oxidation peak was chosen for monitoring the analyte concentration. The developed sensor provided a nanomolar detection limit (3.2 nmol L 1), a wide linear concentration range (from 0.01 to 13.7 μmol L 1), and good precision, repeatability, and selectivity towards FNT. Practical application possibility was explored by testing the sensor performance for examining tap water and apple samples. Recovery tests, conducted during the FNT-spiked sample assays, showed a great application capability of the developed sensor for real-time monitoring of FNT traces in environmental samples.

AB - Excessive pesticide use can harm human health, making it essential to develop new techniques to monitor hazardous pesticides in food. Our study focuses on detecting mesotrione (MST) using an unmodified boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrode. This was the first application of cathodically pretreated BDD electrode for the detection of MST, based on its oxidation at a high potential value of +1.4 V. We theoretically examined the oxidation mechanism of MST trough the utilization of density functional theory (DFT) methodology. The utilized DPV method achieved a detection limit of 0.45 μM and showed satisfactory selectivity. The practical application of this method was demonstrated by examining corn-based food products. To ensure practical application of the method, MST was deliberately added to the samples to evaluate the accuracy of the proposed method. The effectiveness of the method was confirmed by using HPLC method. This environmentally-friendly approach can establish a solid foundation for future use in food analysis.

AB - The widespread abuse of traditional antibiotics has led to a global rise in antibiotic-resistant bacteria, which give in return unprecedented health risks. Therefore, there is a large and urgent need for the development of new, smart antibacterial agents able to efficiently kill or inhibit bacterial growth. In this study, we investigated the antibacterial activity of S, N-doped Graphene Quantum Dots (GQDs) as a light-triggered antibacterial agent. Gamma irradiation was employed as a tool to achieve one-step modification of GQDs in the presence of L cysteine amino acid as a source of heteroatoms. X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and zeta potential measurements provided the necessary data to clarify the structure of modified dots and verify the introduction of both S- and N-atoms in GQDs structure, but also severe changes in the aromatic, sp2 domains. Namely, γ-irradiation caused a bonding of S atoms in 1.14 at.% mainly as thiol groups, and N in 1.81 at.% as amino groups, but sp2 contribution in GQD structure was lowered from 63.00 to 4.86 at.%, as measured in dots irradiated at a dose of 200 kGy. Fluorescence quenching measurements showed that L-cysteine-modified dots are able to bind to human serum albumin. The antibacterial activity of GQDs combined with 1 and 6 h of blue light (470 nm) irradiation was tested against 8 bacterial strains. GQD-cys-25 sample provided the best results, with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) as low as 125 μg/mL against S. aureus, E. faecalis, and E. coli after only 1 h of blue light exposure.

AB - In this study, we propose an eco-friendly method for synthesizing cerium tungstate nanoparticles using hydrothermal techniques. We used scanning, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction to analyze the morphology of the synthesized nanoparticles. The results showed that the synthesized nanoparticles were uniform and highly crystalline, with a particle size of about 50 nm. The electrocatalytic properties of the nanoparticles were then investigated using cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. We further used the synthesized nanoparticles to develop an electrochemical sensor based on a carbon paste electrode that can detect hydroquinone. By optimizing the differential pulse voltammetric method, a wide linearity range of 0.4 to 45 µM and a low detection limit of 0.06 µM were obtained. The developed sensor also expressed excellent repeatability (RSD up to 3.8%) and reproducibility (RSD below 5%). Interferences had an insignificant impact on the determination of analytes, making it possible to use this method for monitoring hydroquinone concentrations in tap water. This study introduces a new approach to the chemistry of materials and the environment and demonstrates that a careful selection of components can lead to new horizons in analytical chemistry.

AB - In this work, the screening of Aspergillus spp which produce pectinases by fermentation in a liquid medium was performed, as pectinases are effective in clarifying strawberry juice. Endo-pectinases were detected by the diffusion assay, and total pectinase activity was determined by the DNS method. The clarification of juice after pectinase treatment was determined by measuring the transmission at 660 nm, and an increase in juice yield was measured by centrifugation. The results obtained showed that these pectinases are very effective for the treatment of strawberry juice in comparison with the commercial pectinase preparation Lafase Fruit.

AB - Brassinosteroids (BRs) are a class of plant hormones that play important roles in regulating various physiological and developmental processes in plants. One of the most effective BRs involved in modulating crop growth is 24-epibrassinolide (24-EBL). The effects of different concentrations of 24-EBL on various biochemical and biophysical parameters critical to early growth stages and seedling development were investigated using two maize hybrids, ‘ZP 434’ (a new-generation hybrid) and ‘ZP 704’ (an older-generation hybrid). The evaluation of results is based on measurements of germination percentage, morphometric parameters, redox status, comparative analysis of thermodynamic parameters (such as Gibbs free energy, enthalpy, entropy), and the concentration of specific sugars in different parts of maize seedlings. The results indicate that the germination and initial growth of maize seedlings are influenced by the flow of crucial sugars from the remaining seed (as a source of nutrients) towards the plumule and radicle (as sink organs). Furthermore, alterations in Gibbs free energy play a significant role in these sugar transfers within the maize seedlings. The seed germination was most affected by the highest concentrations of 24-EBL, showing inhibitory effects, whereas lower and moderate concentrations of exogenously added 24-EBL exhibited a beneficial influence on the initial phases of seedling growth. The mentioned approach gives new insights into source–sink relationships and can be used as a quantitative measure of the germination energy, which until now has been a qualitative criterion in seed science.

AB - The combination of β‐oligosaccharides from enzymatically hydrolysed barley β‐glucan has attracted interest recently due to its positive effects on human health. This study aimed to assess the impact of the endo‐β‐1,3‐1,4‐glucanase enzyme from Bacillus subtilis 168 on improving the nutritional and bioactive properties of barley β‐glucan. A new procedure for the isolation of β‐glucan was developed, at a lower temperature (45 °C), enabling purity from starch contamination, without affecting the yield (6 g β‐glucan from 100 g of barley flour). The endo‐β‐1,3‐1,4‐glucanase is cloned into E. coli pQE_Ek enables the high production and purification (82% yield, 1.8 mg mL −1 and 440 U mg −1 ) of an enzyme identical to the natural one (25.5 kDa). The enzymatic reaction showed high efficiency of β‐glucan degradation by recombinant enzyme, giving a mixture of products (of which 3‐O‐β‐cellobiosyl‐D‐glucose and 3‐O‐β‐cellotriosyl‐D‐glucose are the most abundant), the reduction of viscosity (17%) and increase in antioxidant capacities by 15.2%, 30.9% and 44.0% assessed by ABTS, DPPH and ORAC, respectively. These results indicate the possible application of endo‐β‐1,3‐1,4‐glucanase enzyme in improving the properties of barley β‐glucan used as functional foods.

AB - The combination of an intense absorption of visible light and p-type semiconducting nature makes spinel cobalt oxide (Co3O4) a very attractive material for various optoelectronic applications. However, the traditional methods for its synthesis have been either time- and energy-consuming or relying on toxic chemicals. To solve this issue, a simple, facile, and eco-friendly method of synthesis was successfully developed to obtain spinel Co3O4 nanoparticles. The novel method for obtaining pure and monophasic Co3O4 reported here is based on the thermal decomposition of hexaaquacobalt(II) D-camphor10-sulfonate at 900 °C. This fast solid-state synthesis route overcomes the disadvantages of many combustion methods, most critically by avoiding the use of toxic organic solvents. The synthesized material was subjected to a detailed characterization to assess its potential for use as a nanocatalyst. The band gap measurements indicated the presence of two band gaps, one at 2.10 eV and another at 1.22 eV, confirming the purity and semiconducting properties of the sample. The electrochemical studies demonstrated a significant enhancement in the electron transfer kinetics with the addition of the synthesized Co3O4 to the carbon-paste electrode, leading to an enhanced electrocatalytic performance. These prominent functional properties, suitable for a wide range of technological applications, pave way for the implementation of the reported method for the synthesis of Co3O4 on a larger industrial scale. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l.

AB - We have set-up an electrochemical advanced oxidation process for ethidium bromide (1), based on the Eu-doped MnWO4 (Eu:MnWO4), obtained through a template-driven synthesis, along with developing a suitable monitoring method. Under galvanostatic conditions, Eu:MnWO4-coated graphite electrode serves as anode, applicable for removal of 1. To go further and augment the catalytic method, we have applied a modified carbon paste electrode for the monitoring of 1 with the limit of detection (LOD) of 54 nM. Enhancement of the hydrogen evolution reaction is an indication of electrocatalytic properties of the material, whereby developed method emerges as a candidate for straightforward application in electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (EAOPs). We have enriched experimental data with theoretical insights, provided by Density Functional Theory (DFT), and proposed oxidation mechanism of 1. Based on obtained results, we propose the new nanomaterial as a potent electrochemical modifier, suitable for catalytic treatment and process monitoring of the 1-polluted waters.

abstract = "We have set-up an electrochemical advanced oxidation process for ethidium bromide (1), based on the Eu-doped MnWO4 (Eu:MnWO4), obtained through a template-driven synthesis, along with developing a suitable monitoring method. Based on obtained results, we propose the new nanomaterial as a potent electrochemical modifier, suitable for catalytic treatment and process monitoring of the 1-polluted waters.",

AB - In this work, we investigated the morphological and electrochemical properties of gallium/bismuth mixed oxide. The bismuth concentration was varied from 0 to 100%. The correct ratio was determined with inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES), while surface characteristics were determined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurement. Electrochemical characteristics were studied using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in the Fe2+/3+ couple. The obtained materials were tested for adrenaline detection. After square wave voltammetry (SWV) optimization, the best electrode showed a wide linear working range from 7 to 100 µM at pH 6 of the Britton–Robinson buffer solution (BRBS) supporting electrolyte. The limit of detection (LOD) for the proposed method was calculated as 1.9 µM, with a limit of quantification (LOQ) of 5.8 µM. The excellent selectivity of the proposed method, with good repeatability and reproducibility, strongly suggests the possible application of the procedure for the determination of adrenaline in artificially prepared real samples. The practical applicability with good recovery values indicates that the morphology of the materials is closely connected with other parameters, which further suggests that the developed approach can offer a low-cost, rapid, selective, and sensitive method for adrenaline monitoring. AB - Triclosan (TCS) is a polychlorinated phenoxy phenol (PCPPs) used as a disinfectant and a broad-spectrum antibacterial and antifungal agent in personal hygiene products. TCS easily forms diphenyl ethers and dioxins, which are persistent organic pollutants. This work used a double approach for the TSC sensing: a) screen-printed (SPE) electrochemical platform for on-site application, modified with lanthanum iron oxide and graphitic carbon nitride composite (LaFeO3/Fe2O3@g-C3N4/SPE); and b) carbon paste electrode (CPE), modified with the same material and used in laboratory conditions. Linear range from 0.1 μM to 10 μM, the limit of detection (LOD) of 29 nM and the limit of quantification (LOQ) of 91 nM were obtained for CP electrode in BRBS pH 8. SPE showed the best analytical parameters in BRBS at pH 3, with a linear range from 0.3 μM to 7 μM, LOD of 0.09 μM and LOQ of 0.28 μM. Furthermore, the influence of potential interferents was investigated and proven to be negligible. Determination of TSC was performed to estimate the environmental impact of this compound as well as the practical usefulness of the proposed sensor in the real sample analysis, confirmed with a HPLC analysis. © 2022 Elsevier B.V.

AB - Herein, a screen–printed diamond electrode (SPDE) coupled with a “point-of-care” platform (30 µL-drop concepts, single-drop-detection approach) was successfully applied for the electrochemical determination of pterostilbene (PTS). Cyclic voltammetry identified irreversible oxidation of PTS, where oxidation peak was shown to be strongly dependent on the pH of the working environmental. Although the proposition of the detailed electrochemical oxidation mechanism of PTS goes out of the scope of the present research, we have determined the most probable reactive site of our analyte, by utilizing DFT-based reactivity descriptors (Fukui functions). For electrochemical quantification of PTS, oxidation peak at 0.32 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) was followed in presence of 0.5 mol L−1 of Briton–Robinson buffer solution (pH = 9). Coupled with the optimized parameters of differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), SPDE detected PTS in two linear ranges (first range was from 0.011 to 0.912 µmol L−1; second range was from 0.912 to 4.420 µmol L−1), providing the LOD and LOQ on a nanomolar level (3.1 nmol L−1 and 10.0 nmol L−1, respectively). The selectivity of the optimized DPV method was found to be excellent, with the current changes of less than 7%, in the presence of ten times higher concentrations of the certain interferences. The practical applicability of the SPDE and single-drop-detection approach in dietary supplements (with a declared PTS content of 50 mg/tablet), with the recovery values ranging from 95 to 102%, shows that the developed method has high potential for precise and accurate PTS detection, as well as exceptional miniaturization possibilities of relevant equipment for on-site sensing.

AB - Stable, water-soluble titanium complexed with mandelic acid was used as a precursor for titanium phosphorus double oxide obtained in hydrothermal conditions in the presence of phosphoric acid. Surprisingly, hydrolysis of organic complexes provided a microstructured sphere with narrow size distribution, low aggregation and a small fraction of morphological irregularities. Obtained microspheres had a complex structure comprised of flakes, whose size could be manipulated with temperature conditions. Samples were found to be electrochemically active against sulcotrione, a well-recognized herbicide. Electrochemical sensors based on the synthesized microspheres were successfully adapted for natural water reservoir analysis and exhibited low levels of detection of 0.61 µM, limit of quantification of 1.86 µM, wide dynamic linear range from 2 to 200 µM, good selectivity, excellent reproducibility and in-time stability.

AB - In this paper, electrochemical degradation of Reactive Black 5 (RB5) textile azo dye was examined in regard to different synthesis procedures for making PbO2–graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) electrode. The reaction of with ClO− in the presence of different surfactants, i.e., cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and tetrabutylammonium phosphate (TBAP), under conventional conditions, resulted in the formation of PbO2 with varying morphology. The obtained materials were combined with g-C3N4 for the preparation of the final composite materials, which were then characterized morphologically and electrochemically. After optimizing the degradation method, it was shown that an anode comprising a steel electrode coated with the composite of PbO2 synthesized using CTAB as template and g-C3N4, and using 0.15 M Na2SO4 as the supporting electrolyte, gave the best performance for RB5 dye removal from a 35 mg/L solution. The treatment duration was 60 min, applying a current of 0.17 A (electrode surface 4 cm2, current density of 42.5 mA/cm2), while the initial pH of the testing solution was 2. The reusability and longevity of the electrode surface (which showed no significant change in activity throughout the study) may suggest that this approach is a promising candidate for wastewater treatment and pollutant removal.

AB - There are ten million people in the world who have Parkinson’s disease. The most potent medicine for Parkinson’s disease is levodopa (L-DOPA). However, long-term consumption of L-DOPA leads to the appearance of side effects, as a result of which the control and monitoring of its concentrations are of great importance. In this work, we have designed a new electrochemical sensor for detecting L-DOPA using a carbon paste electrode (CPE) modified with Eu2O3@Cr2O3 composite nanoparticles. Rare earth elements, including Eu, are increasingly used to design new electrode nanocomposites with enhanced electrocatalytic properties. Europium has been considered a significant lanthanide element with greater redox reaction behavior. We conducted a hydrothermal synthesis of Eu2O3@Cr2O3 and, for the first time, the acquired nanoparticles were used to modify CPE. The proposed Eu2O3@Cr2O3/CPE electrode was investigated in terms of its electrocatalytic properties and then used to develop an analytical method for detecting and quantifying L-DOPA. The proposed sensor offers a wide linear range (1–100 µM), high sensitivity (1.38 µA µM−1 cm−2) and a low detection limit (0.72 µM). The practical application of the proposed sensor was investigated by analyzing commercially available pharmaceutical tablets of L-DOPA. The corresponding results indicate the excellent potential of the Eu2O3@Cr2O3/CPE sensor for application in real-time L-DOPA detection.

AB - In this work, an advanced electrochemical platform was developed for the simple, rapid and sensitive determination of the polyphenolic compound tannic acid in various beverages using the combination of batch injection analysis with amperometric detection on a screen-printed carbon electrode. Several experimental parameters (pH of supporting electrolyte, detection potential, dispensing rate, injected volume, stirring) were consistently evaluated. The most favorable analytical performance in terms of sensitivity, selectivity, repeatability and sampling frequency was obtained in Britton-Robinson buffer pH 5.0 at a detection potential of +0.6 V vs. Ag/AgCl, a dispensing rate of 204 µL/s and an injected volume of 80 µL under stirring condition (1500 r.p.m.). The presented platform has advantages for routine analysis including portable and small-scale experimental setup, low sample consumption (∼100 µL), simple sample preparation (dilution in supporting electrolyte), high sampling frequency (180 injections per hour), low limit of detection (80 nM) and suitable precision (RSD = 4.2% for 10 μM tannic acid, n = 20). The applicability of the method was verified by analyzing several beverage samples (tea, wine) in spike-recovery assay with the recovery values for tannic acid ranging from 94 to 101 %. © 2023 Elsevier B.V.

AB - Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are emerging as promising sensing materials due to their controllable structure and function properties, as well as excellent physicochemical characteristics. Here, specific interactions between a triazine-based COF and a mass-used herbicide – glyphosate (GLY) have been utilized to design a disposable sensing platform for GLY detection. This herbicide has been extensively used for decades, however, its harmful environmental impact and toxicity to humans have been recently proven, conditioning the necessity for the strict control and monitoring of its use and its presence in soil, water, and food. Glyphosate is an organophosphorus compound, and its detection in complex matrices usually requires laborious pretreatment. Here, we developed a direct, miniaturized, robust, and green approach for disposable electrochemical sensing of glyphosate, utilizing COF’s ability to selectively capture and concentrate negatively charged glyphosate molecules inside its nanopores. This process generates the concentration gradient of GLY, accelerating its diffusion towards the electrode surface. Simultaneously, specific COF-glyphosate binding catalyses the oxidative cleavage of the C–P bond and, together with pore nanoconfinement, enables sensitive glyphosate detection. Detailed sensing principles and selectiveness were scrutinized using DFT-based modelling. The proposed electrochemical method has a linear working range from 0.1 μM to 10 μM, a low limit of detection of 96 nM, and a limit of quantification of 320 nM. The elaborated sensing approach is viable for use in real sample matrices and tested for GLY determination in soil and water samples, without pretreatment, preparation, or purification. The results showed the practical usefulness of the sensor in the real sample analysis and suggested its suitability for possible out-oflaboratory sensing.

AB - Poly(γ-glutamic acid) (PGA), naturally produced by Bacillus species, is a biodegradable, non-toxic, biocompatible, and non-immunogenic negatively charged polymer. Due to its properties, it has found various applications in the food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. In this work, Bacillus subtilis 17B was selected as the best PGA producer among fifty wild-types Bacillus strains tested and characterized as a glutamate-independent producer. The production of PGA by the newly identified strain was optimized and increased tenfold using the Box-Behnken experimental design. The purity of PGA after recovery and purification from the fermentation broth was confirmed by SDS-PAGE followed by Methylene Blue staining. PGA was characterized by ESI MS and used for the preparation of a new nanocomposite with TiO2. The synthesis of PGA/TiO2 nanocomposite, its structural analysis, and cytotoxic effect on the cervical cancer cell line (HeLa cell) was investigated to determine the potential anti-cancer usage of this newly prepared material. Encouraging, PGA/TiO2 nanocomposite showed an increased cytotoxic effect compared to TiO2 alone.
AB - Presented research aimed to develop an alternative approach for the estimation of biosorption capability of sunflower husk. The acid-pretreated sunflower biomass was characterized by scanning electron microscopy combined with energy dispersive X-Ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX) analysis and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Biosorption efficiency has been evaluated using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). The adsorption capacity of the adsorbent was determined as the function of the pH of the solution, the initial concentration of heavy metal solutions, and contact time. The optimal conditions were achieved after 15 min of contact at pH 6, while the percentage of the removal was from 80.0–98.7 %, depending on the element. The results obtained from the kinetic and isotherm studies show that maximum adsorption of ions was quickly reached and followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Real samples were tested and obtained Ni values by LIBS method were 3100±200 and 1240±100 mg kg-1, while estimated values by the ICP-OES were 2995±20 and 1130±10 mg kg-1, respectively. The obtained results prove that LIBS method can be used as a “green alternative” for the evaluation of biosorption efficiency.

AB - In this work, the sunflower husk was used to evaluate the removal efficiency of heavy metals from an aqueous solution. Firstly, the condition for maximum adsorption of heavy metals is optimized as a function of pH and contact time. Тhereafter, the removal efficiency of Ni from the industrial wastewater by the usage of the sunflower husk as a biosorbent was evaluated by laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), and by the standard spectrochemical ICP-OES method. The values obtained by these two methods were compared and the results are within the uncertainty of the LIBS method.

AB - Pectinases are widely used in the fruit juice industry for clarification, liquefaction and stabilization of juices 1. One of the biggest problems in the production of fruit juices is the turbidity of the juice, which is mainly caused by the presence of pectin polysaccharides. Therefore, pectinase is used in juice clarification, which breaks down the pectin structure and reduces unwanted cloudiness and sediment2. In this work, the production of pectinases was optimized by solid state fermentation using Aspergillus tubingensis strain, which proved to be an efficient producer of these enzymes. Statistical method Design of Experiment was used to optimize the medium and conditions for enzyme production. The total pectinase activity obtained was determined by the DNS method (47 U/mL). Endo- pectinases activity is determined by reduction of viscosity of pectin solutions. The resulting complex of pectinase enzymes was used for the liquefaction of apricot and blueberry pulp, with a juice yield of 72% and 81%, respectively. Also, apricot juice treated with enzymes was clarified by 77% compared to juice that was not treated with enzymes. Blueberry juice obtained after treatment with pectinase enzymes has a higher antioxidant activity than the untreated juice, as determined by the DPPH assay.

AB - The emerging threat of bacterial resistance to antibiotics prompts the urgent search for biomaterials for the treatment of infectious disease. Here we report on the synthesis and characterization of a multiphasic nanocomposite comprising magnetic iron oxide and silver nanoparticles. The method of synthesis involved the combustion of a metalorganic complex and reduction of the silver ions that were exchanged and/or adsorbed on the surface of iron oxide. Different physical and chemical treatments coupled to the reduction process, including ultrasound and Lugol's iodine solution, respectively, homogenized the distribution of the silver nanoparticles on the iron oxide phase. Remarkably, using ascorbic acid as a reductant enhanced the magnetic properties of the material as a result of the reduction of the magnetic matrix alongside the silver cations. The treatment with ultrasound detached large amounts of silver from the iron oxide phase and resulted in the lowest amount of silver incorporated in the nanocomposite. Despite that, this treatment led to the highest antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative strains, indicating that the homogeneity of the distribution of silver on the iron oxide matrix is a more important determinant of the antibacterial performance than the amount of silver incorporated in the material. At the same time, the treatment with Lugol's iodine equally increased the distribution homogeneity, but induced excessive ion exchange and crystal lattice substitutions, thereby adversely affecting the antibacterial performance. This has indicated that the mode of binding silver to iron oxide can compensate for the positive effects of homogeneous distribution with respect to the antibacterial performance.
