Association of MMP1 and MMP3 haplotypes with myocardial infarction and echocardiographic parameters of the left ventricle

AB  - Background Myocardial infarction (MI) leads to ischemia and afterward to left ventricular (LV) remodeling. Matrix metalloproteinase−1 (MMP1) and −3 (MMP3) belong to the family of endopeptidases and together they can dissolve most of the components of the extracellular matrix. MMP1 and MMP3 variants have been investigated solely in association with ischemic heart disease and LV dysfunction, but not in haplotype. The aims of this study were to investigate the association of haplotypes inferred from MMP1 rs1799750 (−1607 1G/2G; NC_000011.9:g.102670497del) and MMP3 rs35068180 (−1612 5A/6A; NC_000011.9:g.102715952dup) with MI and their effect on the change in echocardiographic parameters of LV structure and function in patients within 6 months after MI. Methods The study included 325 patients with the first MI and 283 healthy controls. Gene variants were detected by PCR-RFLP method. Parameters of LV structure and function were assessed by conventional 2D echocardiography, 3–5 days and 6 months after the first MI, on a subgroup of 160 patients. Haplotype analysis was performed with Thesias software. Results Haplotypes 2G-5A and 1G-6A were significantly and independently associated with MI compared with the reference haplotype 2G-6A (adjusted, p = 0.009 and p = 0.026, respectively). After Bonferroni correction for multiple testing, MMP1 and MMP3 haplotypes lost their association with the change in LV long diameter and stroke volume within 6 months after MI. Conclusion MMP1 and MMP3 haplotypes are strongly associated with MI. Further studies are needed to validate this result and to examine their association with echocardiographic parameters of LV structure and function after MI.

Meta-signature guided investigation of miRNA candidates as potential biomarkers of oral cancer

AB  - Objectives This study aimed to experimentally validate dysregulated expression of miRNA candidates selected through updated meta-analysis of most commonly deregulated miRNAs in oral cancer and to explore their diagnostic and prognostic potential. Materials and methods Five miRNAs (miR-31-3p, miR-135b-5p, miR-18a-5p, miR-30a-5p and miR-139-5p) from updated meta-signature were selected for validation by qRT-PCR method in 35 oral cancer clinical specimens and adjacent non-cancerous tissue. Results Updated meta-analysis has identified 13 most commonly deregulated miRNAs in oral cancer. Seven miRNAs were consistently up-regulated (miR-21-5p, miR-31-3p, miR-135b-5p, miR-31-5p, miR-424-5p, miR-18a-5p and miR-21-3p), while five were down-regulated (miR-139-5p, miR-30a-3p, miR-375-3p, miR-376c-3p and miR-30a-5p). Increased expression of miR-31-3p and miR-135b-5p, and decreased expression of miR-139-5p and miR-30a-5p were confirmed in oral cancer compared to adjacent non-cancerous tissue. A three miRNAs combination (miR-31-3p, miR-139-5p and miR-30a-5p) gave the most promising diagnostic potential for discriminating oral cancer from non-cancerous tissue (AUC: 0.780 [95% CI: 0.673–0.886], p < 0.0005, sensitivity 94.3%, specificity 51.4%). High expression of miR-135b-5p, miR-18a-5p and miR-30a-5p was associated with poor survival (p = 0.003, p = 0.048, p = 0.016 respectively). Conclusion miR-31-3p, miR-139-5p and miR-30a-5p panel was confirmed as a potential diagnostic biomarker when distinguishing oral cancer from non-cancerous tissue. miR-135b-5p, miR-18a-5p and miR-30a-5p might serve as potential biomarkers of poor survival of oral cancer patients.

AB  - Objective Cholesteatoma is a challenging chronic pathology of the middle ear for which pharmacologic therapies have not been developed yet. Cholesteatoma occurrence depends on the interplay between genetic and environmental factors while master regulators orchestrating disease progression are still unknown. Therefore, in this review, we will discuss the diagnostic and therapeutic potential of non-coding RNAs (ncRNA) as a new class of regulatory molecules. Methods We have comprehensively reviewed all articles investigating ncRNAs, specifically micro RNAs (miRNAs) and long ncRNAs (lncRNA/circRNA) in cholesteatoma tissue. Results Candidate miRNA approaches indicated that miR-21 and let-7a are the major miRNAs involved in cholesteatoma growth, migration, proliferation, bone destruction, and apoptosis. Regulatory potential for the same biological processes was also observed for miR-203a. The NF-kB/miR-802/PTEN regulatory network was in relation to observed miR-21 activity in cholesteatoma as well. High throughput approaches revealed additional ncRNAs implicated in cholesteatoma pathology. Competitive endogenous RNA (ceRNA) analysis highlighted lncRNA/circRNA that could be “endogenous sponge” for miR-21 and let-7a based on the hypothesis that RNA transcripts can communicate with and regulate each other by using shared miRNA response elements. Conclusion In this review, we summarize the discoveries and role of ncRNA in major pathways in cholesteatoma and highlight the potential of miRNA-based therapeutics in the treatment of cholesteatoma. Level of Evidence: NA.

AB  - Gamma irradiation provides an alternative pathway to conventional gold nanoparticle synthesis because it is simple, fast, and economical. Here, we employed gamma irradiation at low doses (1–20 kGy) to obtain gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) anchored onto graphene oxide (GO) sheets. GO was selected as a suitable platform for the nucleation and growth of Au NPs because of its large surface area and good dispersibility in water due to the presence of polar oxygen-containing functional groups in its structure. Gamma irradiation at all the applied doses led to the reduction of chloroauric acid and the formation of evenly distributed Au NPs at the GO surface, simultaneously causing the reduction of GO and partial restoration of the graphene structure. As-prepared Au NPs have predominately spheric shapes and the smallest nanoparticles were reported for the dose of 1 kGy. The increase in the irradiation dose caused either the growth of larger particles (5 and 10 kGy) or the broad distribution of particles’ sizes (20 kGy). All samples showed a temperature increase upon exposure to 800 nm laser and photothermal efficiency was the highest for the sample prepared at 20 kGy. © 2022 Elsevier Ltd

AB  - Gold polypyrrole (AuPPy) and copper polypyrrole (CuPPy) nanocomposites were prepared by a simple one-step in situ oxidative polymerization of pyrrole monomer by Au3+ and Cu2+ ions. Owing to their characteristic physicochemical properties confirmed by optical and structural characterization methods, the behavior of these materials as electrocatalysts for borohydride oxidation reaction (BOR) was considered. BOR apparent activation energy was found to be 16 and 22 kJ mol−1 for AuPPy and CuPPy electrocatalyst, respectively. The stability of the two electrocatalysts was assessed by chronoamperometry. Moreover, fuel cell tests were carried out with AuPPy and CuPPy as anode electrocatalyst of a direct borohydride-peroxide fuel cell (DBPFC). Open circuit voltage (OCV) of 1.30 V was obtained with both AuPPy and CuPPy, with the OCV increasing to 1.45 V upon adding a small amount of carbon (AuPPy-C). The peak power density of a DBPFC with BOR at AuPPy-C anode and hydrogen peroxide reduction reaction at Pt cathode was found to be ca. 162 mW cm−2 at 65 °C.

AB  - The effect of Ca2+ amount and sintering temperature on mechanical properties of geopolymer-brushite (GPB) binders was investigated. Brushite and raw abandoned kaolinite clay thermally transformed into metakaolin were used for GPB synthesis. The complete phase and structural analyses were performed by X-ray powder diffraction, and Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The pore-filling effect as a consequence of Ca2+ ions incorporation into the hybrid geopolymer networks improved the compressive strength. On the other hand, the chosen biscuit sintering at 800 and 900oC caused the phase transformation of brushite into calcium pyrophosphate, which negatively affected the compressive strength of such materials. The obtained results indicate that the usage of relatively high sintering temperatures is not always the necessary step for producing geopolymer-based types of cement with prominent mechanical properties.

AB  - Anorthite ceramics was fabricated from calcium exchanged Na-LTA zeolite. The powder compacts of Ca-LTA zeolite were sintered at different temperatures ranging between 1100 and 1400°C. It was found that the temperature of 1100°C was sufficiently high to trigger formation of anorthite which stayed stable even at temperature as high as 1400°C. The highest relative density and the lowest open porosity were measured in samples sintered at 1200°C for 3 h. The effect of milling time of Ca-LTA zeolite precursor on density, microstructure and mechanical properties of samples sintered at 1200°C for 3 h was investigated. The particle size refinement appeared to be beneficial in accelerating densification process and improving mechanical properties. The density, compressive strength and hardness of anorthite ceramics obtained from non-milled precursor were measured to be 70.5 %TD, 64 MPa and 1.45 GPa, respectively. On the other side the anorthite ceramics obtained from 24-hour-long milled zeolite precursor had density of 83.9 %TD, compressive strength of 101 MPa and hardness of 3.44 GPa.

Performance assessment of NOVA SDS011 low-cost PM sensor in various microenvironments

AB  - Over the last 10 years, as a possible alternative to the conventional approach to air quality monitoring, real-time monitoring systems that use low-cost sensors and sensor platforms have been frequently applied. Generally, the long-term characteristics of low-cost PM sensors and monitoring have not been thoroughly documented except for a few widely used sensors and monitors. This article addresses the laboratory and field validation of three low-cost PM monitors of the same type that use the NOVA SDS011 PM sensor module over a 1-year period. In outdoor environments, we co-located low-cost PM monitors with GRIMM EDM180 monitors at the National Air Quality Monitoring stations. In indoor environments, we co-located them with a Turnkey Osiris PM monitor. Several performance aspects of the PM monitors were examined: operational data coverage, linearity of response, accuracy, precision, and inter-sensor variability. The obtained results show that inter-monitor R values were typically higher than 0.95 regardless of the environment. The tested monitors demonstrate high linearity in comparison with PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations measured in outdoor air with reference-equivalent instrumentation with R2 values ranging from 0.52 up to 0.83. In addition, very good agreement (R2 values ranging from 0.93 up to 0.97) with the gravimetric PM10 and PM2.5 method is obtained in the indoor environment (30 < RH < 70%). High RH (over 70%) negatively affected the PM monitors’ response, especially in the case of PM10 concentrations (high overestimation).

The maximum obtained compressive strength of 70.15 MPa was measured in sample containing the smallest fraction of zircon, i.e., 10 wt.%. Addition of larger amount of zircon (20 wt.%) hinders the progress of geopolymerization reaction and consequently decreases compressive strength.

High-density ceramics obtained by andesite basalt sintering

AB  - In the present study, andesite basalt originated from the deposit site “Donje Jarinje”, Serbia, was examined as a potential raw material for high-density ceramics production. The production of high-density ceramics included dry milling, homogenization, cold isostatic pressing and sintering in the air. To determine the optimal processing parameters the sintering was conducted at 1040, 1050, 1060, 1070 and 1080°C, and afterwards the sintering duration was varied from 30 to 240min at the optimal sintering temperature of 1060°C. Characterization of the starting and sintered materials included the estimation of particle size distribution, density, hardness and fracture toughness complemented with X-ray diffraction, optical light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy analysis. Phase transformations did not occur during processing in the investigated temperature range from 1040 to 1080°C. The obtained research results showed that 99.5% of relative density and the highest hardness and fracture toughness values of 6.7GPa and 2.2MPa•m1/2, respectively, were achieved for the andesite basalt sintered at 1060°C for 60min in the air. The results of the present study confirmed that the sintered andesite basalt can be used as a high-density ceramic material for various industrial applications.

AB  - Diatomite (diatomaceous earth) and clay minerals deposits from the mining basin Kolubara, Serbia, are natural materials with high economic potential in many fields. As received and treated materials, diatomite and clay were characterized using X-ray diffraction, mercury intrusion porosimetry, particle size distribution, scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. Activity concentrations for natural radionuclides 40K, 226Ra and 232Th and anthropogenic radionuclide 137Cs in diatomite and clay were determined by gamma spectrometry with HPGe detector. Dimethoate, a frequently used insecticide, and its oxo-analog omethoate inhibit acetylcholinesterase and are toxic for mammals. However, under environmental conditions, they also undergo chemical transformations and decomposition. Nevertheless, the systematic data about dimethoate and omethoate decomposition are missing. We performed a systematic analysis of dimethoate and omethoate decomposition under different pH conditions and estimated their long-term eco-neurotoxic effects. Dimethoate and omethoate decompose rapidly in alkaline aqueous solutions (half-lives 5.7 ± 1.4 and 0.89 ± 0.21 days) but are highly stable in acidic solutions (half-lives 124 ± 18 and 104 ± 9 days). These differences are explained using quantum chemical calculations, indicating that a weaker P–S bond in omethoate is more susceptible to hydrolysis, particularly at a high pH. The toxicity of these pesticide solutions decreases over time, indicating that no or very little of highly more toxic omethoate is formed during hydrolysis of dimethoate, pointing to the advantage of alkaline hydrolysis over other techniques for dimethoate removal. Presented data are used to benchmark dimethoate and omethoate concentrations and toxicity in contaminated water in the pH range 3 to 9 for up to 70 days upon the release in the environment.

AB  - Two new Schiff base cobalt(III) ([Co(LH)Cl2], 1) and nickel(II) ([Ni(LH)ClO4], 2) complexes with a diimine-dioxime ligand, (4,9-diaza-3,10-diethyl-3,9-dodecadiene-2,11-dione bis oxime (LH2)), were synthesized and characterized. The compounds were obtained in MeOH from corresponding metal salts and LH2 in molar ratio 1:1 and further characterized by mass spectrometry, IR spectroscopy, electrochemistry, and elemental analysis. Previously reported copper(II) analog ([Cu2(LH)2]·(ClO4)2, 3) was joined to 1 and 2, and the three metal analogs, 1–3, were further investigated in terms of their electrochemical behavior. Binding studies of the complexes with deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and human serum albumin (HSA) were carried out using both spectrophotometric and electrochemical methods. All three complexes exhibit binding affinity towards the DNA chain through intercalative interactions. The binding reaction with HSA showed for 1 and 3 decrease in the peak current obtained in the case of complexes before the addition of HSA, while the Ni complex–HSA possesses the same electroactivity as starting complex. The cytotoxicity of LH2 as well as its metal complexes, and cisplatin were evaluated on CT-26 mouse colon carcinoma and human LS174T cancer cell lines employing MTT assay. The copper(II) complex exhibited very promising anticancer activity compared with cisplatin.

AB  - The beneficial effect of moderate wine consumption is attributed to its micronutrients, especially polyphenols and largely depends on the digestion process. This work aimed to examine the influence of in vitro simulated digestion in the presence of complex food matrix on antioxidant and cytotoxic activity of red wine. The obtained results showed that total phenolic content of wine sample after in vitro digestion was higher compared to undigested wine, while the antioxidant activity of these samples was similar before and after digestion. Furthermore, it has been noticed that digested wine showed cytotoxic activity on SKBR3 breast adenocarcinoma cells near 20% after 72 h of treatment. This pioneering study that examined biological potential of in vitro digested wine in the presence of complex food matrix indicate that antioxidant and cytotoxic activity of red wine is preserved after digestion.

AB  - The emerging threat of bacterial resistance to antibiotics prompts the urgent search for biomaterials for the treatment of infectious disease. Here we report on the synthesis and characterization of a multiphasic nanocomposite comprising magnetic iron oxide and silver nanoparticles. The method of synthesis involved the combustion of a metalorganic complex and reduction of the silver ions that were exchanged and/or adsorbed on the surface of iron oxide. Different physical and chemical treatments coupled to the reduction process, including ultrasound and Lugol's iodine solution, respectively, homogenized the distribution of the silver nanoparticles on the iron oxide phase. Remarkably, using ascorbic acid as a reductant enhanced the magnetic properties of the material as a result of the reduction of the magnetic matrix alongside the silver cations. The treatment with ultrasound detached large amounts of silver from the iron oxide phase and resulted in the lowest amount of silver incorporated in the nanocomposite. Despite that, this treatment led to the highest antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative strains, indicating that the homogeneity of the distribution of silver on the iron oxide matrix is a more important determinant of the antibacterial performance than the amount of silver incorporated in the material. At the same time, the treatment with Lugol's iodine equally increased the distribution homogeneity, but induced excessive ion exchange and crystal lattice substitutions, thereby adversely affecting the antibacterial performance. This has indicated that the mode of binding silver to iron oxide can compensate for the positive effects of homogeneous distribution with respect to the antibacterial performance.

AB  - We report an organic solvent–assisted (OSA) co-precipitation strategy for the production of Mn4+-activated K2TiF6 phosphor. The phosphor particle size was controlled through the selection of organic solvents with an alcohol functional group and different carbon chain lengths used in the synthesis. The synergistic effect of the organic solvent and hydrofluoric acid results in large smoothed hexagonal-shaped crystal sheets of particles that become larger as the carbon chain length of the organic solvent increases. The photoluminescence (PL) properties of K2TiF6:Mn powders strongly depend on the size and thickness of the particles. The addition of n-butanol during the synthesis increases the emission intensity of K2TiF6:Mn by 208%. The PL quantum efficiency of phosphors prepared using the n-butanol-assisted strategy is much higher (98.2%) than that of conventionally prepared phosphors (89.9%). Our findings demonstrate a way to prepare the K2TiF6:Mn phosphor with targeted morphology and very high quantum efficiency and also provide the route for the optimization of all Mn4+-activated fluoride phosphors used in white light-emitting diodes.

AB  - We report on overcoming the sensitivity limit of Boltzmann's thermometers by utilization of seven thermalized Dy3+ excited states in the Lu1.5Y1·5Al5O12 host. Emission spectra recorded from room temperature to 938 K show transitions originating from seven 4F9/2, 4I15/2, 4G11/2, 4I13/2, 4M21/2, 4K17/2, and 4F7/2 excited levels to the 6H15/2 ground state. We introduce the multi-cascade LIR (McLIR) by extending the conventional, two-thermalized level Boltzmann-type LIR to seven thermalized levels. This approach provides higher energy differences between thermalized levels which results in five times larger sensitivity than in the conventional LIR. Considering energy differences between Dy3+ excited states of 1043, 2464, 4331, and 5089 cm−1, the luminescence thermometry with McLIR provided 0.35, 0.84, 1.47, 1.73% K−1 relative sensitivities at 650 K, respectively, in four different LIR combinations. The validity of the McLIR method and the effectiveness of thermalizations between levels is confirmed with the good theoretical fit of experimental data.

The novel approximation is analytically compared with that of WB, clearly giving the preferred temperature and Debye temperature ranges for each approximation. Three additional approximations are given, each with lowered complexity, until the equivalent quadratic form of Magomedov's approximation is reached. AB  - Titanium-nitride (TiN) is known as a very promising plasmonic material, which offers many advantages compared to conventional metals commonly used in practical devices. Despite many improvements, TiN still suffers from high losses in the near-infrared (NIR) spectral region, making it less suitable for real-life applications. In this study, we have investigated the effects of pure silver implanted as well as silver/gold co-implanted TiN thin films on their optical properties, which we analyzed by spectroscopic ellipsometry. We demonstrate that the presence of silver and gold drastically changes both the real and imaginary part of the dielectric function. The implanted films exhibit optical losses several times lower compared to as-deposited TiN. The changes are in particular more pronounced for the samples with Au/Ag co-implantations, reaching nearly the same optical values as those of pure gold and being only slightly larger than that of silver. Thus, such an optical tuning of TiN opens new horizons and provide high potential for its implementation into plasmonic applications.

AB  - Enhanced optical properties of TiO2 thin films can be achieved by doping or coating with metals. Metal-doped TiO2 can reduce electron-hole recombination and increase hydroxyl radical concentration on the surface of TiO2, resulting in increase of the photocatalytic activity. TiO2 and TiO2-Au thin films were obtained by DC magnetron sputtering of Ti target with Ar ions in O2 atmosphere. In the case of Au buffered TiO2 thin films, two different systems were deposited for comparison. Post deposition annealing at 400 °C was carried out in nitrogen atmosphere for 3 h. The structural and optical characteristics of the prepared films were investigated in detail by the combination of high-resolution microscopic and spectroscopic techniques. The photo-degradation rate was measured using Rhodamine B which simulated pollutant. Post deposition annealing resulted in diffusion of Au atoms through the layer as it was revealed by transmission electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The obtained TiO2 thin films were found to be amorphous after deposition and annealing at 400 °C leads to crystallization of anatase phase. Analysis of the binding energy in the corresponding X-ray photoelectron spectra has confirmed stoichiometry of TiO2 and that concentration of Au on the surface can be controlled by sputtering and annealing conditions, thus changing optical properties by influencing the surface plasmonic nature. All Au doped TiO2 thin films exhibited enhanced wettability and photo-degradation rates when compared to pristine titania films. © 2022 Elsevier B.V.

AB  - Structural modification of different carbon-based nanomaterials is often necessary toimprove their morphology and optical properties, particularly the incorporation of N-atoms ingraphene quantum dots (GQDs). Here, a clean, simple, one-step, and eco-friendly method forN-doping of GQDs using gamma irradiation is reported. GQDs were irradiated in the presenceof the different ethylenediamine (EDA) amounts (1 g, 5 g, and 10 g) and the highest % of N wasdetected in the presence of 10 g. N-doped GQDs emitted strong, blue photoluminescence (PL).Photoluminescence quantum yield was increased from 1.45, as obtained for non-irradiated dots,to 7.24% for those irradiated in the presence of 1 g of EDA. Modified GQDs were investigated asa PL probe for the detection of insecticide Carbofuran (2,2-Dimethyl-2,3-dihydro-1-benzofuran-7-yl methylcarbamate) and herbicide Amitrole (3-amino-1,2,4-triazole). The limit of detection was5.4 µmol L−1for Carbofuran. For the first time, Amitrole was detected by GQDs in a turn-off/turn-onmechanism using Pd(II) ions as a quenching agent. First, Pd(II) ions were quenched (turn-off) PLof GQDs, while after Amitrole addition, PL was recovered linearly with Amitrole concentration(turn-on). LOD was 2.03 µmol L−1. These results suggest that modified GQDs can be used as anefficient new material for Carbofuran and Amitrole detection. Furthermore, the phototoxicity of dotswas investigated on both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains. When bacterial cellswere exposed to different GQD concentrations and illuminated with light of 470 nm wavelength, thetoxic effects were not observed.

AB  - The essence of this study is synthesis of a newly developed and efficient heterogeneous catalyst based on aluminum oxide support promoted with potassium iodide (KI) as active dopant responsible for pronounced catalyst activity. Modified sol–gel, reflux and hydrothermal method were used for synthesis of aluminum-oxide support using aluminum isopropoxide as a precursor. The γ-Al2O3 support and KI/γ-Al2O3 catalyst samples were examined by various experimental techniques. Effects of several operational parameters were considered and those are: methanol to sunflower oil molar ratio, catalyst loadings, reaction time and reaction stirring rate. The obtained results indicated that modified sol–gel method for synthesis of γ-Al2O3 catalyst support is the most favorable for obtaining the catalyst with superior catalytic performances in transesterification of sunflower oil. A maximum conversion (triglycerides to methyl esters) of 99.99% was achieved using the SG-KI/γ-Al2O3-770 catalyst under following optimal process parameters: 15:1 methanol to sunflower oil molar ratio, 2.5 wt% catalysts loading, 600 rpm stirring rate and 4 h of the reaction run.

AB  - This paper presents a comparative analysis of three carbon-based electrodes: bare multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT), SnO2/MWCNT, and PbO2/graphene-nanoribbons (PbO2/GNR) composites, as anodes for the electrooxidative degradation of Rhodamine B as a model organic pollutant. Anodic electrooxidation of Rhodamine B was performed on all three electrodes, and the decolorization efficiency was found to increase in the order MWCNT < PbO2/GNR < SnO2/MWCNT. The electrodes were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and linear sweep voltammetry (LSV). It was proposed that, in the 0.1 M Na2SO4 applied as electrolyte, observed decolorization mainly occurs in the interaction of Rhodamine B with OH radical adsorbed on the anode. Finally, the obtained results were complemented with Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations of OH-radical interaction with appropriate model surfaces: graphene(0001), SnO2(001), and PbO2(001). It was found that the stabilization of adsorbed OH-radical on metal oxide spots (SnO2 or PbO2) compared to carbon is responsible for the improved efficiency of composites in the degradation of Rhodamine B. The observed ability of metal oxides to improve the electrooxidative potential of carbon towards organic compounds can be useful in the future design of appropriate anodes.

AB  - A part of the Raša Bay (western Croatia) is an estuary that is fed by the sediment load from the Raša River. The local area
had been affected by the former Raša coal industry. The aim of this study was to determine levels of hazardous trace elements (HTEs) in bottom estuarine sediments, fish and mussels collected from two sites downstream of the Raša River
mouth, and a wild boar’s kidney donated by hunters. The pseudo-total concentrations of 21 HTEs in sediments were
obtained by the X-ray fluorescence (XRF) technique. The results showed that sediment collected closest to the former
Raša coal separation unit Štalije was enriched in V, Sr, Ni, Cu, and Pb. Concentrations of HTEs in flathead grey mullet,
wild blue mussels, and wild boar were obtained by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The results
showed that Pb, Cd and Hg in fish and wild mussels were not elevated compared to the Regulation levels of contaminants
in food. Lead and Cd in the kidney of a wild boar exceeded the prescribed maximum values for food. This study warrants
further geochemical investigations of the Raša Bay environment.

AB  - Solving problems with hazardous waste materials is of crucial importance today. In the presented study, the application of waste vitreous enamel as a cement replacement up to 30% in mortar and concrete production was investigated. The chemical and physical-chemical characterization of the starting material was performed, as well as a leaching test and physical-mechanical characterization of mortar and concrete mixes. Obtained results showed that, due to its chemical composition, the vitreous enamel used must be classified as hazardous waste. At the same time, it possesses pozzolanic properties and satisfies minimal criteria for use as a cement replacement. Testing mortars and concrete mixes indicate that waste vitreous enamel can be applied as a construction material for cement replacement in the maximal amount of 20%. The leaching test was performed in accordance with international standard EN 12457-2 on hardened mortar with a maximal cement replacement of 20%. The results showed that there was no significant release of toxic elements, i.e., that the practical application of hazardous waste vitreous enamel in the construction industry may be fully in line with environmental standards.
