Non-coding RNA and cholesteatoma

AB  - Objective Cholesteatoma is a challenging chronic pathology of the middle ear for which pharmacologic therapies have not been developed yet. Cholesteatoma occurrence depends on the interplay between genetic and environmental factors while master regulators orchestrating disease progression are still unknown. Therefore, in this review, we will discuss the diagnostic and therapeutic potential of non-coding RNAs (ncRNA) as a new class of regulatory molecules. Methods We have comprehensively reviewed all articles investigating ncRNAs, specifically micro RNAs (miRNAs) and long ncRNAs (lncRNA/circRNA) in cholesteatoma tissue. Results Candidate miRNA approaches indicated that miR-21 and let-7a are the major miRNAs involved in cholesteatoma growth, migration, proliferation, bone destruction, and apoptosis. Regulatory potential for the same biological processes was also observed for miR-203a. The NF-kB/miR-802/PTEN regulatory network was in relation to observed miR-21 activity in cholesteatoma as well. High throughput approaches revealed additional ncRNAs implicated in cholesteatoma pathology. Competitive endogenous RNA (ceRNA) analysis highlighted lncRNA/circRNA that could be “endogenous sponge” for miR-21 and let-7a based on the hypothesis that RNA transcripts can communicate with and regulate each other by using shared miRNA response elements. Conclusion In this review, we summarize the discoveries and role of ncRNA in major pathways in cholesteatoma and highlight the potential of miRNA-based therapeutics in the treatment of cholesteatoma. AB  - The interaction of a Transversely Excited Atmospheric (TEA) CO2 laser with a polymer polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) sample in a vacuum ambiance was studied. The main goal was to demonstrate the feasibility of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) to detect hydrogen. The generation of plasma over the PMMA surface, using a low laser intensity of ∼ 48 MW/cm2 and fluence of ∼ 16.5 J/cm2, required the application of a metal sub-target. Besides hydrogen, the recorded spectra were dominated by atomic lines of carbon and oxygen and band emission of the C2 and CN molecules. The electron number density and temperature (ionic, vibrational, and rotational) were evaluated to characterize the laser-induced plasma. In addition, PMMA micro-damages (diameter ∼ 45 µm) created by a multipulse laser ablation could find potential applications in sensor technologies.

AB  - The surface of a titanium-based alloy Ti6Al4V was subjected to modifications by a near-IR femtosecond Ti:Sapphire laser, emitting at 775 nm pulses of 200 fs duration, in single-pulse and multi-pulse regimes, with up to 400 accumulated pulses, and pulse energies ranging from 2.5 to 250 $$\upmu $$J. The whole range of induced effects is presented, from gentle ablation and pattern occurrence to substantial crater formation. Very observable laser-induced parallel periodic surface structures are reported, appearing both within the damage spot area, with low fluences, and at the peripheries of the craters, with higher fluences—but also on crater walls, and inside the crater structures. Damage threshold fluences $$({F}_{\mathrm{th}})$$and the incubation factor $$(\zeta )$$were also determined.

AB  - The need for stable, chemical resistant and conductive materials is on the rise in recent times. Graphene shows promising electrical conductivity and chemical stability, but the production of a continual, conductive layer is limited and expensive. Silver nanowires (AgNWs) are both conducive and economically viable, but they are sensitive to water and oxygen. In this study, graphene oxide (GO) and AgNWs were synthesized and combined in different mass ratios (3:1, 2.5:1.5, and 1:1) to obtain chemically stable composites with improved electrical properties. Composites were reduced using ascorbic acid. With the increase of AgNWs to GO mass ratio, the surface of the free-standing composite film improved: the root mean square roughness was lowered from 376 nm for GO to 168 nm for the composite with the mass ratio of GO:AgNWs 1:1, while the sheet resistance was lowered from 146 × 106 Ω/□ to 4 Ω/□. For the first time, the effects of gamma irradiation on the structure of the composites were studied. Doses of 15, 25, and 35 kGy were applied.

AB  - ObjectivesGalectin-3 affects a variety of biological processes. It is encoded by LGALS-3, located in unique haplotype block in Caucasians. Most of the studies regarding the gal-3 role in atherosclerosis are focused exclusively on protein/mRNA levels. Genetic analyses of LGALS-3 are scarce. We sought to thoroughly examine the genetic background of gal-3 and to analyze tag variants that cover more than 80% variability of the LGALS-3 containing hap-block in association with carotid plaque presence (CPP). According to Tagger server, rs4040064 G/T, rs11628437 G/A and rs7159490 C/T cover 82% (r2 > 0.8) of the genetic variance of this hap-block. Our aims were to investigate possible association of rs4040064, rs11628437 and rs7159490 haplotypes with CPP in patients with advanced carotid atherosclerosis (CA) and to analyze their possible effect on LGALS-3 mRNA expression in carotid plaques.Materials and methodsStudy group consisted of 468 patients and 296 controls. Rs4040064, rs11628437, rs7159490 and LGALS-3 mRNA expression were detected by TaqMan® technology.ResultsWe have found that haplotype TAC was associated with the cerebrovascular insult (CVI) occurrence (OR = 1.68, 95% CI = 1.09-2.58, p = 0.02), compared to the referent haplotype. OR was adjusted for hypertension, age and BMI. TAC also showed higher, but not statistically significant, LGALS-3 expression in carotid plaques.ConclusionsOur results suggest that rs4040064, rs11628437 and rs7159490 bear no association with CPP, neither they affect LGALS-3 mRNA in carotid plaques. However, we showed a significant association of haplotype TAC with the CVI occurrence in CA patients from Serbia. Replication and validation of our results are required.

AB  - Titanium-nitride (TiN) is known as a very promising plasmonic material, which offers many advantages compared to conventional metals commonly used in practical devices. Despite many improvements, TiN still suffers from high losses in the near-infrared (NIR) spectral region, making it less suitable for real-life applications. In this study, we have investigated the effects of pure silver implanted as well as silver/gold co-implanted TiN thin films on their optical properties, which we analyzed by spectroscopic ellipsometry. We demonstrate that the presence of silver and gold drastically changes both the real and imaginary part of the dielectric function. The implanted films exhibit optical losses several times lower compared to as-deposited TiN. The changes are in particular more pronounced for the samples with Au/Ag co-implantations, reaching nearly the same optical values as those of pure gold and being only slightly larger than that of silver. Thus, such an optical tuning of TiN opens new horizons and provide high potential for its implementation into plasmonic applications.

AB  - Di(meth)acrylate (D(M)A) systems with pendant oligo(ethylene glycol) (OEG) chains are promising biomedical candidates. Homopolymeric P(OEG)D(M)A hydrogels have significant thermoresponsiveness demonstrated mainly at elevated temperatures which makes this class of materials unsuitable for bio-applications. Copolymerisation with less hydrophilic 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) was performed in an effort to shift volume phase transition (VPT) closer to physiological temperatures and to widen their application as thermoresponsive materials. Various monomer-solvent mixtures, consisting of different mole ratios of OEGDMA and HEMA monomers (100/0, 50/50, 27.5/72.5, and 12.5/87.5) and water/ethanol as solvent, were exposed to gamma radiation up to 6, 12, 25, and 50 kGy. Furthermore, in an attempt to obtain multi- (thermo- and pH-) responsive hydrogels for biomedical applications new P(OEGDMA/HEMA/IA) terpolymers containing a small share (2.5, and 5 wt%) of itaconic acid (IA) were synthesised. The successful fabrication of the hydrogels was confirmed by gel measurements and FTIR spectroscopy. Swelling measurements indicated that obtained networks possessed tuneable thermal behaviour and swelling properties which could be significantly altered by hydrogel composition. The porous architecture was investigated using SEM, confirming swelling results. Cytotoxicity revealed relatively high cell viability for all hydrogels, indicating satisfactory in vitro biocompatibility. Therefore, new OEGDMA based hydrogels showed potential for biomedical applications.

AB  - In order to compare alpha-particle and gamma-ray spectrometry, the activity concentrations of 235U, 238U and 226Ra in samples of coal, slag and fly-ash from the thermal power plant “Nikola Tesla A”, Serbia, were determined by these two methods. Methods were compared and discussed from the point of view of its precision, difficulty to apply and complexity. Gamma-ray spectrometry was performed with HPGe (High Purity Germanium) spectrometer, while alpha activity was measured by PIPS (Passivated Implanted Planar Silicon) detector. For the alpha-particle spectrometry, the chemical procedures applied were chromatographic resin extraction for uranium isotopes and micro-coprecipitation for 226Ra. Thin alpha sources were prepared by electrodeposition and filtration through polypropylene membrane filter for uranium determination, while filtration technique was performed for radium sources. For the evaluation of the statistical difference between individual measurement results obtained by application of two methods Z - test was used. In order to evaluate the difference between two methods used, paired samples t-test and F-test were applied. Results show that there is no statistical difference between two methods used and that gamma-ray spectrometry is a valid alternative to time consuming alpha spectrometry.

AB  - In the present paper, we discuss implementation details of a free and open-source numerical solver based on the finite volume method for numerical simulation of viscoplastic non-Newtonian fluids. In addition to the fact that they are involved in many industrial applications, both their physical properties and their rheological behavior make them challenging for numerical simulation. Viscoplastic fluids are known to behave as solid unless the shear stress reaches a critical level, known as yield-stress, beyond which they behave as liquid. In most cases, both yielded and unyielded regions coexist in the fluid domain. In mathematical model of viscoplastic fluid, the constitutive equation is a non-differentiable function. This is often overcome by using the approximate constitutive equation that has a regularized form, e.g. the Papanastasiou regularization model. Using the same approach, we assess the influence of regularization parameters on simulation convergence and results accuracy. In this study, we give implementation details of viscoplastic fluid models in freeCappuccino open-source Computational Fluid Dynamics code. Moreover, we perform validation on several well known benchmark cases and compare proposed approach with those existing in published literature. We also perform a parametric analysis and show the effect of Reynolds and Bingham numbers on the extent of the yielded regions. Conclusions of the study have relevance in practical application of computational fluid dynamics to viscoplastic fluids in particular and to non-Newtonian fluids in general. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

AB  - Pyrolytic tire (PT) chars were first produced from waste car tires (WCT) through carbonization process at 800 °C, for different retention times. Then, best PT-char sample by its physicochemical properties (WCT 800(1 h)) was further tested for its ability to adsorb Rhodamine B (RhB) dye from aqueous solutions. Structural characterization of synthesized material showed existence of graphene-based material, with average pore diameter of 22.8 nm and specific surface area of 55.8 m2·g−1. Obtained carbon material meets specifications of commercial carbon black (CB). The yield of 33.6% of CB recovered has been achieved. Under the optimal conditions, 99.57% of RhB was removed. Adsorption of RhB obeys pseudo second-order model and Langmuir isotherm model. DFT (the density functional theory) was revealed that effective bonding of RhB onto WCT 800 originates from π-electron interactions with aromatic moieties and chemical (or at least the electrostatic) interactions, between positive nitrogen and electron-rich surface groups.

AB  - The analytical potential of LIBS for the analysis of liquid solutions was evaluated using two experimental setups, one based on a TEA CO2 laser and the other in which Nd:YAG laser was used. Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) was used as a substrate on which a 10 μL drop of analyte solutions with different concentrations of analyte elements, Be, Cr, Ni, Co, Pb, Tl, and V, were deposited and dried. The samples were deposited either directly on the PTFE or over the pre-deposited layer of copper oxide nanoparticles to study the influence of nanoparticles (NPs) on the ablation and plasma excitation. The obtained results imply that the presence of Cu oxide NPs does not significantly affect the analytical performance of LIBS based on TEA CO2 laser for analysis of solutions. At the same time, it was shown that plasma created by TEA CO2 laser radiation efficiently excited ablated material, making metal elements detectable in the sub-ppm concentration range. On the other hand, Cu oxide NPs significantly influence the formation and the analytical properties of plasma induced by Nd:YAG laser. Without the presence of NPs, the intensities of analyte lines were very low, unsuitable for spectrochemical analysis. At the optimal surface concentration of NPs, 0.36 mg/cm2, the intensity of analyte lines was increased more than ten times. Limits of detection of Be and Cr were 5.3 ppb and 33 ppb, with good linearity of curves of growth.

AB  - In this study, nickel (Ni) thin films were deposited at two different angles (65o and 85o) using Glancing Angle Deposition technique, to the thicknesses of 60 – 290 nm. Structural analysis of the deposited films was performed by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, while spectroscopic ellipsometry was used for the investigation of optical properties. Electrical resitivity of the samples was determined by four-point probe method. Structural analysis showed that the Ni films grow in a shape of zigzag nanocolumns, where the deposition angle strongly affects their porosity. As the thickness of the films increase they absorb light strongly and become less dense. Besides, samples deposited at the angle of 85o exhibit higher values of electrical resistivity as compared to the samples deposited at the angle of 65o, which can be correlated with high porosity and the growth mechanism of the deposited nanostructures.

Thermally induced phase transformation of Mn-exchange zeolites are followed in the range from 700 to 1300oC. Both frameworks collapse into amorphous intermediate products after heating between 600 and 650oC. Prolonged heating of the intermediate product above 1100 °C results directly in formation of a disorder Mn-anorthiteLTA and Mn-anorthiteFAU. The parameter of unit cell of Mn-anorthiteLTA and Mn-anorthiteFAU, in temperature range between 700 and 1300oC, was observed in space group C-1. The phase conversions in the temperature range investigated were followed by thermal, X-ray powder diffraction and FT-IR analyses.

Novel cordierite-acicular mullite composite for diesel particulate filters

AB  - Cordierite-acicular mullite composites containing 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 wt% of mullite were fabricated from waste MoSi2 and commercial powders of Al2O3 and spinel (MgAl2O4). Careful oxidation of pulverised waste MoSi2 rendered a precursor mixture of MoO3 and amorphous SiO2, which served as pore forming agent and SiO2 source, respectively. Evaporation of MoO3 at ∼750 °C allowed production of highly porous cordierite-mullite ceramic composite after sintering in air at 1350 °C for 4 h. The combination of equiaxed cordierite grains and elongated (prism-like) mullite grains, resulted in unique microstructure with open porosity between 53.3 and 55.6 vol% which makes the obtained composite convenient for application as diesel particulate filter material. The presence of mullite affected four key thermo-mechanical properties which determine the thermal shock resistance of cordierite-mullite composite. The best thermal shock resistance was measured in composite containing 75 wt% of mullite. It was a result of improved thermal conductivity (1.081 W/mK) and bending strength (3.62 MPa) and relatively low values of coefficient of thermal expansion (3.8 × 10−6 K−1) and elastic modulus (2.27 GPa).

AB  - Coordination effects have been considered through the most common interactions in the crystal structures of fluoro compounds (C-H/F and F/F interactions). The supramolecular profile of these effects is based on quantum-chemical calculations for the assessment of the interaction strength and electrostatic potential maps, which provide a qualitative insight into the examined effect. Coordination of aliphatic fluorides leads to an increase of the negative potential of the F atoms, and, hence, an increase in the hydrogen-bonding acceptor ability (strengthening of C-H/F interactions) and a weakening of the F/F interactions, due to an increase in repulsive interactions between the F atoms. There is no significant change in the potential of the F atoms due to coordination of C6-aromatic fluorides, as in the case of aliphatic ones. This results in slight changes in the strengths of the C-H/F and F/F interactions (coupled with parallel interaction at large offsets, PILO), in a noticeable enhancement of stacking interactions, as well as in a significant enhancement of interactions involving the π-system (F/πand C-H/πinteractions). It has also been shown that a decrease in the charge of the metal ions leads to a decrease in the negative potential of the F atom and also that the nature of the metal ion has a significant influence on the value of the potential of the F atoms.

AB  - During the last 20 years, the scientific community has shown growing interest towards carbonaceous nanomaterials due to their appealing mechanical, thermal, and optical features, depending on the specific nanoforms. Among these, graphene quantum dots (GQDs) recently emerged as one of the most promising nanomaterials due to their outstanding electrical properties, chemical stability, and intense and tunable photoluminescence, as it is witnessed by a booming number of reported applications, ranging from the biological field to the photovoltaic market. To date, a plethora of synthetic protocols have been investigated to modulate the portfolio of features that GQDs possess and to facilitate the use of these materials for target applications. Considering the number of publications and the rapid evolution of this flourishing field of research, this review aims at providing a broad overview of the most widely established synthetic protocols and offering a detailed review of some specific applications that are attracting researchers’ interest.

AB  - We investigated the ability of graphene quantum dot (GQD) nanoparticles to protect SH-SY5Y human neuroblastoma cells from oxidative/nitrosative stress induced by iron-nitrosyl complex sodium nitroprusside (SNP).GQD reduced SNP cytotoxicity by preventing mitochondrial depolarization, caspase-2 activation, and subsequent apoptotic death. Although GQD diminished the levels of nitric oxide (NO) in SNP-exposed cells, NO scavengers displayed only a slight protective effect, suggesting that NO quenching was not the main protective mechanism of GQD. GQD also reduced SNP-triggered increase in the intracellular levels of hydroxyl radical (•OH), superoxide anion (O2•- ), and lipid peroxidation. Nonselective antioxidants, •OH scavenging, and iron chelators, but not superoxide dismutase, mimicked GQD cytoprotective activity, indicating that GQD protect cells by neutralizing •OH generated in the presence of SNP-released iron. Cellular internalization of GQD was required for optimal protection, since a removal of extracellular GQD by extensive washing only partly diminished their protective effect. Moreover, GQD cooperated with SNP to induce autophagy, as confirmed by the inhibition of autophagylimiting Akt/PRAS40/mTOR signaling and increase in autophagy gene transcription, protein levels of proautophagic beclin-1 and LC3-II, formation of autophagic vesicles, and degradation of autophagic target p62. The antioxidant activity of GQD was not involved in autophagy induction, as antioxidants N-acetylcysteine and dimethyl sulfoxide failed to stimulate autophagy in SNP-exposed cells. Pharmacological inhibitors of early (wortmannin, 3-methyladenine) or late stages of autophagy (NH4Cl) efficiently reduced the protective effect of GQD. Therefore, the ability of GQD to prevent the in vitro neurotoxicity of SNP depends on both •OH/NO scavenging and induction of cytoprotective autophagy.

Although GQD diminished the levels of nitric oxide (NO) in SNP-exposed cells, NO scavengers displayed only a slight protective effect, suggesting that NO quenching was not the main protective mechanism of GQD. GQD also reduced SNP-triggered increase in the intracellular levels of hydroxyl radical (•OH), superoxide anion (O2•- ), and lipid peroxidation. Nonselective antioxidants, •OH scavenging, and iron chelators, but not superoxide dismutase, mimicked GQD cytoprotective activity, indicating that GQD protect cells by neutralizing •OH generated in the presence of SNP-released iron. AB  - Nowadays, a larger number of aggressive and corrosive chemical reagents as well as toxic solvents are used to achieve structural modification and cleaning of the final products. These lead to the production of residual, waste chemicals, which are often reactive, cancerogenic, and toxic to the environment. This study shows a new approach to the modification of graphene quantum dots (GQDs) using gamma irradiation where the usage of reagents was avoided. We achieved the incorporation of S and N atoms in the GQD structure by selecting an aqueous solution of L-cysteine as an irradiation medium. GQDs were exposed to gamma-irradiation at doses of 25, 50 and 200 kGy. After irradiation, the optical, structural, and morphological properties, as well as the possibility of their use as an agent in bioimaging and photodynamic therapy, were studied. We measured an enhanced quantum yield of photoluminescence with the highest dose of 25 kGy (21.60%). Both S- and N-functional groups were detected in all gamma-irradiated GQDs: amino, amide, thiol, and thione. Spin trap electron paramagnetic resonance showed that GQDs irradiated with 25 kGy can generate singlet oxygen upon illumination. Bioimaging on HeLa cells showed the best visibility for cells treated with GQDs irradiated with 25 kGy, while cytotoxicity was not detected after treatment of HeLa cells with gamma-irradiated GQDs.

AB  - The progressive development of technology and industry in the new millennium emergently requires finding a balance between economic progress and new smart materials. Graphene as a carbon allotrope since the discovery has attracted enormous attention due to several extraordinary properties that originate from its physical and chemical assets. However, the most important obstacle in graphene assembly still is the production of high-quality graphene on a large scale using cost-effective methods. The presented review article aims to give information on a turning point in graphene synthesis, with reference to a detailed analysis of electrochemical exfoliation, rapid thermal annealing and biomass pyrolysis. Selected methods for graphene and graphene-based nanomaterials production were not covered in the literature to their maximum potential, from our point of view. Through an overview of the selected synthesis methods, we explored their prospects and limitations regarding precursor type and reaction conditions. Furthermore, through several important characterization techniques for graphene, we reveal the details of the properties of graphene and graphene-based nanomaterials obtained through selected methods. Finally, a particular potential application depending on nanomaterial properties obtained through selected methods was pointed out.

AB  - Exosomes (EXOs) are nano-sized vesicles secreted by most cell types. They are abundant in bio-fluids and harbor specific molecular constituents from their parental cells. Due to these characteristics, EXOs have a great potential in cancer diagnostics for liquid biopsy and personalized medicine. Despite this unique potential, EXOs are not yet widely applied in clinical settings, with two main factors hindering their translational process in diagnostics. Firstly, conventional extraction methods are time-consuming, require large sample volumes and expensive equipment, and often do not provide high-purity samples. Secondly, characterization methods have some limitations, because they are often qualitative, need extensive labeling or complex sampling procedures that can induce artifacts. In this context, novel label-free approaches are rapidly emerging, and are holding potential to revolutionize EXO diagnostics. These methods include the use of nanodevices for EXO purification, and vibrational spectroscopies, scattering, and nanoindentation for characterization. In this progress report, we summarize recent key advances in label-free techniques for EXO purification and characterization. We point out that these methods contribute to reducing costs and processing times, provide complementary information compared to the conventional characterization techniques, and enhance flexibility, thus favoring the discovery of novel and unexplored EXO-based biomarkers. In this process, the impact of nanotechnology is systematically highlighted, showing how the effectiveness of these techniques can be enhanced using nanomaterials, such as plasmonic nanoparticles and nanostructured surfaces, which enable the exploitation of advanced physical phenomena occurring at the nanoscale level.

AB  - Persistent microbial contamination of medical implant surfaces is becoming a serious threat to public health. This is principally due to antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains and the formation of bacterial biofilms. The development of novel antibacterial materials that will effectively fight both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and prevent biofilm formation represents a big challenge for researchers in the last few decades. In the present work, we report an antibacterial hydrophobic carbon quantum dots/polyurethane nanocomposite (hCQD-PU), with enhanced antibacterial properties induced by pre-treatment with gamma-irradiation. Hydrophobic quantum dots (hCQDs), which are capable of generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) upon irradiation with low-power blue light (470 nm), have been integrated into the polyurethane (PU) polymer matrix to form a photoactive nanocomposite. To modify its physical and chemical properties and improve its antibacterial efficacy, various doses of gamma irradiation (1, 10, and 200 kGy) in the air environment were applied to the formed nanocomposite. Gamma-irradiation pre-treatment significantly influenced the rise in ROS production, therefore, the prooxidative activity under the blue-light illumination of hCQD-PU was also significantly improved. The best antibacterial activity was demonstrated by the hCQD-PU nanocomposite irradiated with a dose of 200 kGy, with the complete eradication of Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Gram-negative Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria after 15 min of exposure to the blue lamp. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd

abstract = "Persistent microbial contamination of medical implant surfaces is becoming a serious threat to public health. This is principally due to antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains and the formation of bacterial biofilms. The development of novel antibacterial materials that will effectively fight both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and prevent biofilm formation represents a big challenge for researchers in the last few decades. In the present work, we report an antibacterial hydrophobic carbon quantum dots/polyurethane nanocomposite (hCQD-PU), with enhanced antibacterial properties induced by pre-treatment with gamma-irradiation. Hydrophobic quantum dots (hCQDs), which are capable of generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) upon irradiation with low-power blue light (470 nm), have been integrated into the polyurethane (PU) polymer matrix to form a photoactive nanocomposite. To modify its physical and chemical properties and improve its antibacterial efficacy, various doses of gamma irradiation (1, 10, and 200 kGy) in the air environment were applied to the formed nanocomposite. Gamma-irradiation pre-treatment significantly influenced the rise in ROS production, therefore, the prooxidative activity under the blue-light illumination of hCQD-PU was also significantly improved. The best antibacterial activity was demonstrated by the hCQD-PU nanocomposite irradiated with a dose of 200 kGy, with the complete eradication of Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Gram-negative Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria after 15 min of exposure to the blue lamp. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd",

AB  - U radu su prikazani rezultati merenja radonskog ravnotežnog faktora aktivnom metodom na 5 lokacija u Crnoj Gori i Srbiji. Dobijeni rezultati su u rasponu od 0.36 do 0.7, što je u proseku veće od preporučene vrednosti od 0.4. Na istim lokacijama su izvršena interkomparativna merenja koncentracije radona (uređajima Alpha Guard Pro, RAD7 i RTM1688-2), ravnotežne ekvivalentne koncentracije radona (uređajima RNWL i RPM2200) i radonskog ravnotežnog faktora. Slaganje rezultata je testirano Z-testom koji ukazuje da ne postoji statistički značajno odstupanje između rezultata dobijenih različitim mernim uređajima, odnosno ne postoji nekonzistentnost između različitih metodologija merenja kao ni potrebe za harmonizacijom različitih procedura merenja.

Radon equilibrium factor was derived from measurements of indoor radon concentration and equilibrium equivalent radon concentration. Measurements were performed one day for each of 5 locations by using different active devices. Obtained radon equilibrium factors range from 0.36 to 0.7 which is in average larger than worldwide average of 0.4 Results are not surprising since measuring locations were kept closed during the measuring time, reducing therefore ventilation rate which as a consequence has an increase of equilibrium factor. Individual measuring results of indoor radon concentrations, equilibrium equivalent radon concentrations and radon equilibrium factors obtained with different detectors systems from 2 research teams was tested using Z – test. Obtained Z – score for each measurement vas below critical value, indication that there is no statistical difference between different measuring devices.

AB  - Copper slag flotation tailings (CSFT), as the end waste from copper mining, are evaluated for radionuclide and heavy metal immobilization. Characterization of CSFT based on grain size and mineral composition, surface functional groups, pH and electrical conductivity in aqueous media, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), determination of characteristic temperatures in sample melting process, leachability, and toxicity tests is conducted. The screening sorption of Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Zn(II), Cd(II), and Pb(II) inactive isotopes from single-component solutions is performed. The Cd(II) ions show better sorption potential than other ions, with a sorption capacity of 0.08 mmol g−1 at the highest initial concentration. Sorption decreases in the sequence Cd(II) > Pb(II) > Zn(II) > Mn(II) > Ni(II) > Co(II) at all initial concentrations. Although CSFT shows lower sorption capability than synthetic sorbents based on fayalite and magnetite, its inexpensiveness and substantial accessible amount represent great advantages in wider utilization.

AB  - Cr3+-doped Mg2SiO4 orthorhombic nanoparticles are synthesized by a combustion method. The 3d3 electron configuration of the Cr3+ ion results in the deep-red emission from optical transitions between d-d orbitals. Two overlapping emissions from the Cr3+ spin-forbidden 2Eg→ 4A2g and the spin-allowed 4T2g→ 4A2g electronic transitions are influenced by the strong crystal field in Mg2SiO4 and, thus, are suitable for ratiometric luminescence thermometry. The temperature-induced changes in Cr3+-doped Mg2SiO4 emission are tested for use in luminescence thermometry from cryogenic to physiologically relevant temperatures (10-350 K) by three approaches: (a) temperature-induced changes of emission intensity; (b) temperature-dependent luminescence lifetime; and (c) temperature-induced changes of emission band position. The second approach offers applicable thermometry at cryogenic temperatures, starting from temperatures as low as 50 K, while all three approaches offer applicable thermometry at physiologically relevant temperatures with relative sensitivities of 0.7% K-1 for emission intensity, 0.8% K-1 for lifetime and 0.85% K-1 for band position at 310 K. © 2021 IOP Publishing Ltd.

AB  - Results concerning the controllable ablation of nano-layered thin films (NLTF) by femtosecond laser pulses are presented. Investigated samples were titanium-aluminum bilayers, deposited on a silicon substrate, with the top titanium or aluminum layer of variable thickness on the surface. Irradiation was done in ambient air with single femtosecond laser pulses under standard laboratory conditions. The samples were analyzed by complementary methods of optical and scanning electron microscopy and optical profilometry, exhibiting laser-fluence-dependent ablative removal either of the top layer or the entire bilayer or even partial ablation of the underlying silicon substrate. The removal (spallation) threshold fluences for the topmost layer are scalable versus its thickness almost irrespectively of its material, being rather selective for the Ti-coated samples and much less selective for the Al-coated samples. The removal of the entire bilayers was found to be strongly influenced by electronic properties of the underlying metallic layer, dictating the NLTF-Si adhesion, heat conduction, and capacity in the NLTFs toward the NLTF-Si interface and beyond, as well as by their thermophysical characteristics, e.g., almost twice higher melting temperature and enthalpy for Ti. As a result, precise fs-laser machining of the entire NLTFs is pronounced and selective for the samples with the fusible Al at the low-adhesion Al-Si interfaces, compared with the incomplete NLTF removal from the high-adhesion and refractory Ti-Si interfaces.
