AB - Lignins and lignin-derived compounds are known to have antibacterial properties. The wound healing agents in the form of dressings produce faster skin repair and decrease pain in patients. In order to create an efficient antimicrobial agent in the form of dressing in the treatment of chronic wounds, a composite hydrogel of bacterial cellulose (BC) and dehydrogenative polymer of coniferyl alcohol (DHP), BC-DHP, was designed. Novel composite showed inhibitory or bactericidal effects against selected pathogenic bacteria, including clinically isolated ones. The highest release rate of DHP was in the first hour, while after 24 h there was still slow release of small amounts of DHP from BC-DHP during 72 h monitoring. High-performance liquid chromatography coupled with mass-spectrometry showed that BC-DHP releases DHP oligomers, which are proposed to be antimicrobially active DHP fractions. Scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy micrographs proved a dose-dependent interaction of DHP with BC, which resulted in a decrease of the pore number and size in the cellulose membrane. The Fourier-transform infrared absorption spectra of the BC-DHP showed that DHP was partly bound to the BC matrix. The swelling and crystallinity degree were dose-dependent. All obtained results confirmed BC-DHP composite as a promising hydrogel for wounds healing.

AB - The biological activities of two binuclear copper(II) complexes containing S-alkenyl derivatives of thiosalicylic acid are reported [alkenyl = propenyl (L1), isobutenyl (L2)]. The structure of the complex with the S-isobutenyl derivative (C2) was confirmed by single-crystal X-ray structure analysis, which revealed that the structure consists of centrosymmetric, dinuclear complex molecules [Cu-2(S-i-butenyl-thiosal)(4)(DMSO)(2)] containing two Cu(II) centers bridged by four S-isobutyl-thiosalicylate ligands in a paddle-wheel type structure. The Cu(II) atom is situated in a distorted square-pyramidal environment formed by carboxylate oxygen atoms in the basal plane and a DMSO ligand in the axial position. The reactivities of the complexes toward guanosine-5-monophosphate (5-GMP) were investigated. Complex C2 ([Cu-2(S-i-butenyl-thiosal)(4)(H2O)(2)]) reacted more rapidly with 5-GMP than complex C1. The interactions of complexes C1 and C2 with calf thymus DNA (CT-DNA) were examined by absorption (UV-Vis) and emission spectral studies (ethidium bromide displacement studies), revealing good DNA interaction abilities. The antimicrobial activities of the free ligands and their complexes were tested by microdilution method, and both minimal inhibitory and microbicidal concentrations were determined. All the tested substances demonstrated selective and moderate antibacterial activity on gram-positive bacteria, but low antibacterial activity on gram-negative bacteria. Also, the tested substances demonstrated low antifungal activity.

AB - Nowadays bacterial resistance to known antibiotics is a serious health problem. In order to achieve more efficient treatment, lately there is an effort to find new substances, such as certain biomaterials, that are non-toxic to humans with antibiotic potential. Lignins and lignin-derived compounds have been proposed to be good candidates for use in medicine and health maintenance. In this study, the antibacterial activity of the lignin model polymer dehydrogenate polymer (DHP) in alginate hydrogel (Alg) was studied. The obtained results show that DHP-Alg has strong antimicrobial activity against several bacterial strains and biofilms and does not have a toxic effect on human epithelial cells. These results strongly suggest its application as a wound healing agent or as an adjunct substance for wound treatments. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. and International Society of Chemotherapy. AB - Twenty one essential oils (EOs) documented their significant antimicrobial effect with regard to our pre-set criterion of the Minimal Inhibitory Concentration (MIC ≤ 200 μL / mL) of EOs towards Enterococcus faecalis (ATCC 29212 and or clinical isolates); the best effect MIC 0.4 μL / mL (approx. 0.26 μg / mL) achieved Satureja horvatii L. EO, while the EOs with the lowest antimicrobial efficacy were Rosmarinus officinalis L. and Achilea milefolium L., both with MIC s160.0 μg / mL. Analysis of the MIC values within the groups revealed that ATCC strain of E. faecalis is generally lower, ranging from 0.26 to 156 μg / mL, in comparison to those for clinical isolateswhich ranged from 10 to 160 μg / mL. Twelve 12 components that are common in EOs whith MIC s ≤ 200 μg / mL in testings towards both, the clinical and referent strains are given in descending order according to number of oils they are present in: trans-β-caryophyllene (13) > myrcene (8) > α-pinene (8) > linalool (7) > p-cymene (7) > borneol (7) > geraniol (6) > camphene (6) > limonene (5) > 1,8- cineol (5) > γ -terpinene (5) > α- terpinene (4). Comparison of EO constituents reviled that only, geraniol and 1,8-cineol, contributed with ≥ 10 % to more than one EO (MIC 0.3-200 μg / mL) efficient against both E. faecalis strains. Thirteen components in 11 EOs with MIC ≤ 200 μg / mL towards ATCC 29212 were representative based on their contents in EOs: eugenol 82.9 % > thymol 63.7 % > hexadecanoic acid 47.8 % > menthol 46.6 % > cis-b-ocimene 44.2 % > geranial 42.1 % > trans-β-caryophyllene 40.8 % > citronellal 36.7 % > α-pinene 31.2 % > neral 30.5 % > α-eudesmol 22.4 % > citronellol 13.1 % > menthone 11.3 %. Following seven components, representative in 10 EOs with MIC ≤ 200 μg / mL towards clinical isolates, are presented in order of their contribution to EOs: phenylethyl alcohol 57.7 % > geranial 32.9 % > neral 22.2 % > p- cymene 20 % > carvacrol 14 % > α-pinene 11.5 % > linalool 11.4 %. Out of 21 highly efficient EOs selected in this study, six EOs proved to be the most efficient (MIC ≤ 30 μg / mL ); three oils in control of E.faecalis ATCC strain (Satureja horvatii, Mentha pulegium and Rosmarinus officinalis) and other three in control of E. faecalis clinical isolates (Leptospermum petersonii, Thymus algeriensis, Thymus serpyllum). Thymol is a major component in three out of the six aforementioned most efficient EOs. The aim of our study was to investigate differences in efficacy of selected EOs that proved to possess great antimicrobial activity, towards the referent strain ATCC 29212 and clinical isolates of E. faecalis on, and to estimate which of their constituents might contribute to desired activity, as 'markers compunds'.

It possesses immunomodulatory, antitumor, antimicrobial, and antiaging activities, among others, but one of the most important is its antioxidant property, which is the basis for other effects, because free radicals trigger many diseases. The substrate commonly used for commercial cultivation of G. lucidum is not environmenwas to analyze the effect of substrate composition on the bioactivity of G. lucidum basidiocarps. G. lucidum was cultivated on 2 different substrates: (1) a mixture of wheat straw, grapevine branches, and wheat bran, and (2) wheat straw. Commercial fruiting bodies, cultivated on oak sawdust, were used as the control. 1,1- diphenyl- 2- picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) The comet test was performed to detect the degree of DNA damage in the cells that were exposed to G. lucidum extracts before and after the effect of oxidants. Higher antioxidative potential was observed for the extract of G. lucidum basidiocarps cultivated on wheat straw compared with that from the mixed substrate and especially with commercial ones. The alternatively cultivated basidiocarps also showed stronger antigenotoxic potential compared with commercial ones. The study showed that fruiting bodies produced on wheat straw, one of the most accessible and cheapest crop residues, are more potent antioxidant and antigenotoxic agents than commercially cultivated ones.

AB - The octahedral cobalt(III) complexes with (S,S)-ethylenediamine-N,N-di-2-propionic (S,S-eddp) and (S,S)-ethylenediamine-N,N-di-2-(3-methyl)-butanoic (S,S-eddv) acids and oxalato and malonato ligands, as additional bidentate ligands, were prepared and characterized. The complexes were purified by ionexchange chromatography. The geometry of the complexes has been supposed on the basis of the infrared, electronic absorption and NMR spectra. The A absolute configurations of the isolated complexes have been predicted on the basis of their circular dichroism (CD) spectra and it was confirmed by single-crystal X-ray analysis of potassium-Delta-(-)(589)-s-cis-oxalato-(S,S)-ethylenediamine-N,N-di-(2-propanoato)-cobaltate(III)-semihydrate, K-Delta-(-)(589)-s-cis-[Co(S,S-eddp)(ox)]center dot 0.5H(2)O. Antimicrobial activity of ligands and obtained cobalt(III) complexes was evaluated by determining the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum microbicidal concentration (MMC) in relation to 13 species of microorganisms (five strains of pathogenic bacteria, five species pathogenic fungi and three species of probiotic). Tested ligands and complexes demonstrated moderate and low antibacterial and antifungal activity. There was no difference in activities between the ligands and complexes. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. AB - In the reaction of meso-1,2-diphenyl-ethylenediamine (1,2-dphen) with neutralized 3-chlor-propanoic acid, the new linear tetradentate edda-like ligand (edda = ethylenediamine-N,N-diacetic ion) meso-1, 2-diphenyl-ethylenediamine-N,N-di-3-propanoic acid dihydrochloride monohydrate (H-2-1,2-dpheddp center dot 2HCl center dot H2O) was prepared. The corresponding platinum(IV) complex, s-cis-dichlorido-(meso-1,2-diphenyl-ethylenediamine-N,N-di-3-propanoate)-platinum(IV) ([PtCl2(1,2-dpheddp)]) was synthesized by heating potassium-hexachloridoplatinate(IV) and H-2-1,2-dpheddp center dot 2HCl center dot H2O on steam bath for 12 h with neutralization by means of lithium-hydroxide. The palladium(II) complex, cis-dichlorido-(meso-1,2diphenyl-ethylenediamine-N,N-di-3-propanoate)-palladium(II) (IPdCl2(1,2-dpheddp)]) was obtained in the similar way using potassium-tetrachloridopalladate(II), H-2-1,2-dpheddp-2HCl center dot H2O and lithium-hydroxide. The compounds were characterized by elemental analysis and infrared spectroscopy. The spectroscopically predicted structure of the synthesized tetradentate ligand was confirmed by X-ray analysis of the H-2-1,2-dpheddp.2HCl center dot H2O. Antimicrobial activity of the ligand and corresponding palladium(II) and platinum(IV) complexes is investigated against 25 species of microorganisms. Testing is preformed by microdilution method and minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) and minimum microbicidal concentration (MMC) have been determined. The difference between antimicrobial activity of the ligand and corresponding platinum(IV) and palladium(II) complex is noticed and, in general, palladium(II) complex was the most active.
