AB - Potential non-toxic pink and red ceramic pigments based on CeO2 were successfully synthesized by self-propagating room temperature method and thermally treated at 600, 900 and 1200 °C for 15 min. The structure, morphology and optical properties, as well as thermal stability of Ce1-xErxO2-δ and Ce1-xPrxO2-δ (x = 0.05) were examined. Single-phase composition of all obtained CeO2 pigments was confirmed using XRPD method and Raman spectroscopy and it was not dependent on temperature. The mechanism of structural behaviour was thoroughly examined using Raman and FTIR spectroscopy. Nanometric dimensions of the crystallites of all pigments were confirmed using XRPD, TEM and FE-SEM analysis. Colour properties were dependent on the temperature treatment, and their position in the chromaticity diagram was studied using UV/VIS spectrophotometry. Colour efficiency measurements were supplemented by colorimetric analysis. It is proved that all samples are thermally stable in the investigated temperature range (up to 1200 °C), and their potential application as environmentally friendly pigments of desired colour is confirmed.

AB - Magnetic and non-magnetic macroporous crosslinked copolymers of glycidyl methacrylate and trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate were prepared by suspension copolymerization and functionalized with diethylenetriamine. The samples were characterized by mercury porosimetry, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis (FTIR-ATR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and SQUID magnetometry. The FTIR-ATR analysis of synthesized magnetic nanocomposites confirmed the presence of magnetite and successful amino-functionalization. Non-functionalized and amino-functionalized nanocomposites exhibited superparamagnetic behavior at 300 K, with a saturation magnetization of 5.0 emu/g and 2.9 emu/g, respectively. TEM analysis of the magnetic nanocomposite has shown that magnetic nanoparticles were homogeneously dispersed in the polymer matrix. It was demonstrated that incorporation of magnetic nanoparticles enhanced the thermal stability of the magnetic nanocomposite in comparison to the initial non-magnetic macroporous copolymer. © 2019, Association of Chemists and Chemical Engineers of Serbia. AB - Supercritical CO2 impregnation process was used for the first time to fabricate biodegradable gelatin-chitosan (G/Ch) films containing clove oil (CO) for potential use in active food packaging. All the impregnations were carried out at moderately low temperature (40 °C). Aiming to maximize CO loading in the films with acceptable morphological, structural and thermal properties, CO2 pressure, impregnation time and G:Ch mass ratio were varied. Gelatin fraction in the films of 25-50 wt.%, scCO2 pressures of 10-20 MPa and impregnation time of 2-6 h impregnation favoured the CO loading. Processing of the film with equal gelatin to chitosan mass ratio (G/Ch50:50) at 10 MPa for 2 h yielded sufficiently high loading (56 mg CO/gfilm) without an adverse effect on morphological properties. The G/Ch50:50 film was therefore chosen for structural and thermal analyses. ATR-FTIR analysis confirmed successful CO incorporation into the G/Ch50:50 and its interaction with the film. Plasticizing effect of scCO2 and CO on the film was evidenced by DSC. Incorporation of 56 mg CO/gfilm into the G/Ch50:50 didn't affect thermal stability of the film. Beside environmental benefits, supercritical impregnation process enables fast fabrication of G/Ch bio-composite films containing CO, thermally stable to 110 °C, which is suitable for most of food packaging applications. © 2019, CI and CEQ. AB - Lignins and lignin-derived compounds are known to have antibacterial properties. The wound healing agents in the form of dressings produce faster skin repair and decrease pain in patients. In order to create an efficient antimicrobial agent in the form of dressing in the treatment of chronic wounds, a composite hydrogel of bacterial cellulose (BC) and dehydrogenative polymer of coniferyl alcohol (DHP), BC-DHP, was designed. Novel composite showed inhibitory or bactericidal effects against selected pathogenic bacteria, including clinically isolated ones. The highest release rate of DHP was in the first hour, while after 24 h there was still slow release of small amounts of DHP from BC-DHP during 72 h monitoring. High-performance liquid chromatography coupled with mass-spectrometry showed that BC-DHP releases DHP oligomers, which are proposed to be antimicrobially active DHP fractions. Scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy micrographs proved a dose-dependent interaction of DHP with BC, which resulted in a decrease of the pore number and size in the cellulose membrane. The Fourier-transform infrared absorption spectra of the BC-DHP showed that DHP was partly bound to the BC matrix. The swelling and crystallinity degree were dose-dependent. All obtained results confirmed BC-DHP composite as a promising hydrogel for wounds healing.

AB - In this work, Zn(CH3 COO)(2) 2 H-2 O with AgNO3 content from 0 to 6 mol% was solvothermally treated at 120 C for 18 h in the presence of poly(vinyl pyrrolidone), ethylene glycol and sodium hydroxide. The structural , microstructural and photocatalytic properties of the unmodified and Ag modified ZnO powders have been investigated by the XRPD, FESEM, TEM, UV-vis, Raman and BET techniques. The Ag modified samples consist of ZnO nanocrystals and metallic Ag on the surface. The average crystallite size of all samples was about 20 nm. The FESEM revealed the uniformity in size and approximately spherical shape of ZnO nanopar-ticles. The BET data suggest that all prepared samples are mesoporous. All prepared samples showed higher photocatalytic efficiency in the degradation of the Reactive Orange 16 (RO16) azo dye than the commercial ZnO. In addition, Ag modified ZnO powders, especially those with 1.5 and 0.75 mol% of Ag, were more efficient than the unmodified one.

In addition, Ag modified ZnO powders, especially those with 1.5 and 0.75 mol% of Ag, were more efficient than the unmodified one.",

AB - The nanopowdery solid solutions of multidoped ceria Ce0.8Nd0.0025Sm0.0025Gd0.005Dy0.095Y0.095O2 (delta) (x = 0.2) with the fluorite type crystal structure of CeO2 were synthesized for the first time. Two synthesis procedures were applied: the modified glycine-nitrate procedure (MGNP method) and room temperature self-propagating reaction (SPRT method). All nanopowders were characterized by XRPD analysis, Raman spectroscopy, low temperature nitrogen physisorption, TEM, and SEM methods. According to the XRPD and Raman spectroscopy results, single phase solid solutions of fluorite structure were evidenced regardless of the number of dopants and synthesis procedure. Both XRPD and TEM were analyses evidenced nanometer particle dimensions. The SPRT method results in obtaining sample with higher specific surface area, smaller crystallite and particles sizes, and the same values of the lattice parameter in comparison to pure CeO2. Raman spectroscopy was confirmed to the oxygen vacancies introduced into the ceria lattice when Ce4+ ions were replaced with cations (dopants) of lower valence state (3+), which may indicate the potential improvement of ionic conductivity. Additionally, the presence of oxygen vacancies in the lattice ceria, as well as very developed grain boundaries, gives a new possibility for potential application of obtained nanopowders in the area of room temperature ferromagnetism as spintronics.

AB - Nanoparticles of ceria ruthenium oxide solid solutions with composition Ce1-xRuxO2-delta (X=0.005-0.02) were successfully produced by self propagating room temperature synthesis using reaction between metal nitrates and sodium hydroxide. These compositions were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, specific surface area, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The experimental measurements were complemented by calculations based on the ion packing model. XRD analysis revealed the presence of single phase solid solutions with CeO2 fluorite structure (regardless of dopants concentration) and Raman spectroscopy confirmed the presence of the RuO2 phase. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements of sintered samples at different temperatures showed that the small ionic radius dopant reduces oxygen vacancies mobility that is responsible for the conductivity of these ceramics. AB - Geopolymeric binders (GB) were produced using fly ash (FA) and electric arc furnace slag (EAFS). The slag has been added in the range of 0-40%. The effects of slag content on the strength, microstructure and thermal resistance were evaluated. It was found that the amount of EAFS up to 30% positively affects the strength evolution of GB. The main reaction product of FA/EAFS blends was amorphous N-(C)-A-S-H gel along with geopolymer-type gel (N-A-S-H). Thermal resistance of GB was considered from the standpoint of their mechanical and dimensional stability after heating in the temperature interval of 600800 C. The changes in mechanical and thermal properties of GB after heating are attributed to the changes in their structure. The results have shown that EAFS negatively affects the thermal resistance of GB above 600 degrees C due to the phase transition and morphological transformation of the amorphous gel phase. AB - Thick films using starting nanopowders of TiO2 (anatase 99.7%) and alpha-Fe2O3 (hematite) mixed in the weight ratios 60:40 and 40:60 for thick film paste were fabricated by screen printing technology on an alumina substrate. Samples were sintered at temperatures of 800-950 degrees C for 60 min. Structural and electronic properties were analyzed by XRD and SEM analysis, UV/vis spectroscopy and current voltage analysis in view of potential application as gas sensors and anodes in photoelectrochemical cells for hydrogen generation and water splitting. XRD analysis showed that at 800 degrees C monoclinic pseudobrookite formed and anatase had transformed into rutile. Increase in sintering temperature lead to a gradual transformation of monoclinic pseudobrookite into the orthorhombic phase. SEM analysis showed that a homogenous small grain structure was obtained especially in the case of thick film samples with the 40:60 ratio of starting anatase and hematite sintered at 850 degrees C. AB - The solid solutions of CeO2 with one or more rare-earth oxides among Yb2O3, Sm2O3, and Gd2O3 are synthesized by either modified glycine nitrate procedure (MGNP) or self-propagating reaction at room temperature (SPRT). The overall mole fraction of rare-earth oxide dopants was x = 0.2. The characterization was committed by XRPD, TEM, BET, and Raman Spectroscopy methods. According to XRPD and Raman spectroscopy, the obtained products presented the single-phase solid solutions with basic fluorite-type CeO2 structure, regardless on the number and the concentration of dopants. Both XRPD and TEM analysis evidenced the nanometer particle dimensions. The defect model was applied to calculate lattice parameters of single-, co-, and multi-doped solids. The sintering of the sample nanopowders was performed at 1550 A degrees C, in air atmosphere. The sintered samples were characterized by XRPD, SEM, and complex impedance methods. The sintering did not affect the concentration ratios of the constituents. The highest conductivity at 700 A degrees C amounting to 2.14 x 10(-2) and 1.92 x 10(-2) Omega(-1) cm(-1) was measured for the sample Ce0.8Sm0.08Gd0.12O2-delta, synthesized by SPRT and MGNP methods, respectively. The corresponding activation energies of conductivity, measured in the temperature range 500-700 A degrees C, amounted to 0.24 and 0.23 eV.

AB - A series of four different powders ceria doped Ce1-xErxO2-delta (0.05 LT = x LT = 0.20) were synthesized by applying self-propagating reaction at room temperature (SPRT method). SPRT procedure is based on the self-propagating room temperature reaction between metal nitrates and sodium hydroxide, wherein the reaction is spontaneous and terminates extremely fast. The method is known to assure very precise stoichiometry of the final product in comparison with a tailored composition. XRPD, Raman spectroscopy, TEM and BET measurements were used to characterize the nanopowders at room temperature. It was shown that all obtained powders were single phase solid solutions with a fluorite-type crystal structure and all powder particles have nanometric size (about 3-4 nm). Densification was performed at 1550 degrees C, in an air atmosphere for 2 h. XRPD, SEM and complex impedance method measurements were carried out on sintered samples. Single phase form was evidenced for each sintered materials. The best value of conductivity at 700 degrees C amounted to 1.10 x 10(-2) Omega(-1) cm(-1) for Ce0.85Er0.O-3(2-delta) sample. Corresponding activation energies of conductivity amounted to 0.28 eV in the temperature range 500-700 degrees C. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - BaCe(0.9)Ee(0.1)O(2.95) (BCE) nanopowder was synthesized by citric-nitric autocombustion method. Rietveld refinement analysis showed that unit cell volume was slightly larger compared with the most known BaCe0.9Y0.1O2.95, which might contribute to higher proton mobility. Sinterability of BaCeO3 is also enhanced by doping with Eu, since dense single-phased BCE electrolyte microstructure comprising of 1-2mm grains was obtained after sintering at 1450 degrees C for 5 h. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analysis revealed separate bulk and grain boundary contributions to the total electrolyte conductivity below 200 degrees C. The grain boundary conductivity was one to two orders of magnitude lower than the bulk conductivity, indicating blocking effect of the grain boundaries to the mobility of charge carriers. This effect diminished completely above 500 degrees C and only total conductivities were determined between 500 and 700 degrees C. Conductivity of BCE in a wet hydrogen atmosphere at 600 degrees C reached 1.2 x 10(-2) S/cm, which can be considered as one of the highest conductivities among BaCeO3 based proton conductors. AB - Structural, electrical and magnetic properties of nickel manganite ceramics obtained by sintering fine powders prepared by a complex polymerization method are given in this work. The phase composition of the synthesized material was examined by x-ray powder diffraction (XRPD). Field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) was used to analyze the obtained powder morphology. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to analyze the microstructure of sintered ceramics. The activation energy of conduction E-a and the coefficient of temperature sensitivity B-25/100 were calculated from direct current (DC) resistivity measurements. The magnetization dependence of temperature M(T) and alternating current (AC) susceptibility data obtained from SQUID measurements clearly demonstrate that quadruple magnetic phase transitions can be readily detected at T-M1 similar to 115 K, T-M2 similar to 105 K, T-M3 similar to 38 K and T-M4 similar to 7 K. These findings suggest a novel magnetic transition for nickel manganite at low temperature T-M4. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. All rights reserved.

AB - We present magnetic properties of NiMn2O4-delta (nickel manganite) which was synthesized by complex polymerization synthesis method followed by successive heat treatment and final calcinations in air at 1200 degrees C. The sample was characterized by using X-ray powder diffractometer (XRPD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometer. The XRPD and FE-SEM studies revealed NiMn2O4-delta phase and good crystallinity of particles. No other impurities have been observed by XRPD. The magnetic properties of the sample have been studied by measuring the temperature and field dependence of magnetization. Magnetic measurements of M(T) reveal rather complex magnetic properties and multiple magnetic phase transitions. We show three magnetic phase transitions with transition temperatures at T-M1 = 35 K (long-range antiferromagnetic transition), T-M2 = 101 K (antiferromagnetic-type transition) and T-M3 = 120 K (ferromagnetic-like transition). We found that the T-M1 transition is strongly dependent on the strength of the applied magnetic field (T-M1 decreases with increasing applied field) whereas the T-M3 is field independent. Otherwise, the T-M2 maximum almost disappears in higher applied magnetic fields (H = 1 kOe and 10 kOe). Magnetic measurements of M(H) show hysteretic behavior below T-M3. Moreover, hysteresis properties measured after cooling of the sample in magnetic field of 10 kOe show exchange bias effect with an exchange bias field vertical bar H-EB vertical bar= 196 Oe. In summary, the properties that distinguish the investigated NiMn2O4-delta sample from other bulk, thin film, ceramic and nanoparticle NiMn2O4-delta systems are the triple magnetic transitions with sharp increase of the ZFC and FC magnetizations at 120 K and the exchange bias effect. The analysis of the results and comparison with literature data allowed us to conjecture that the mixed oxidation states of Mn ions, ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic sublattice orders and surface effects in the sample tailor these interesting magnetic properties. AB - A simple ball milling/thermal treatment procedure was applied to obtain fine thermistor powders. Three different powder compositions were analyzed-Cu0.2Ni0.5Zn1.0Mn1.3O4, Cu0.25Ni0.5Zn1.0Mn1.25O4 and Cu0.4Ni0.5Mn2.1O4. XRD analysis showed that all three powder compositions had a cubic spinel structure. Correlation between the sintering temperature, structure and resulting electrical properties was analyzed on bulk samples. Thick film pastes were composed and segmented thick film thermistors were screen printed on alumina, dried and fired. SEM analysis revealed a typical dendrite structure with small grains and a developed surface area. Thick film sheet resistance was measured on a test matrix and the resistance decreased with increasing Cu content. The temperature dependence of sample resistance was measured in a climatic chamber enabling calculation of the material constant and activation energy. Aging of the obtained segmented thermistors was analyzed and the resistivity drift was 0.23% for the Cu0.2Ni0.5Zn1.0Mn1.3O4 NTC thick film thermistor confirming greater stability of thermistors containing Zn and Cu that in combination with the determined good thermistor characteristics make them good candidates for temperature and heat loss sensor applications. AB - Different synthesis methods for the preparation of nanocrystalline nickel ferrites are reported: the thermal decomposition of precursors, made of: (i) metal-nitrate salts with carboxylic acids (citric, malonic and tartaric), and (ii) metal-nitrate salts and polyethylene glycol (PEG), in the presence of potassium chloride as a capping agent. The as-prepared gel precursors were characterized by TGA/DTA, while the samples obtained after annealing at 450 degrees C were investigated by FTIR, FESEM, XRD and Mossbauer spectroscopy. Regardless of the type of carboxylic acid used, nanocrystallites prepared by (i) method are similar in size (11-16 nm), while the method (ii) gives crystallites similar to 33 nm in size with negligible microstrain. The differences in the lattice parameter, ranging from 8.3369(2) to 8.3574(2) angstrom, result from cation distribution, nonstoichiometry and structural imperfections in the nickel ferrite nanoparticles. The Mossbauer spectra analysis indicates existence of large distortions of tetrahedral and octahedral sites in these spinel compounds. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. AB - Mixtures of BaCO3, ZnO and TiO2 powders, with molar ratio of 1:2:4, were mechanically activated for 20, 40 and minutes in a planetary ball mill. The resulting powders were compacted into pellets and isothermally sintered at 1250 degrees C for 2h with a heating rate of 10 degrees C/min. X-ray diffraction analysis of obtained powders and sintered samples was performed in order to investigate changes of the phase composition. The microstructure of sintered samples was examined by scanning electron microscopy. The photoacoustic phase and amplitude spectra of sintered samples were measured as a function of the laser beam modulating frequency using a transmission detection configuration. Fitting of experimental data enabled determination of photoacoustic properties including thermal diffusivity. Based on the results obtained correlation between thermal diffusivity and experimental conditions, as well the samples microstructure characteristics, was discussed.

AB - The effects of Zn-doping on the dielectric behavior and electrical properties of bulk alpha-Fe2O3 have been studied. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed the presence of two phases in all samples: hematite and spinel ZnFe2O4, with the amount of spinel phase increasing with increasing Zn content. Scanning electron microscopy analysis combined with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy showed that the Zn-bearing phase occurred in the form of individual spinel ZnFe2O4 grains in a hematite matrix. DC conductivity was measured in the temperature range 25-225°C (298-498 K). Impedance spectroscopy measurements in the same temperature range were carried out in the frequency range 100Hz to 10 MHz. Increase in the Zn content resulted in increased electrical conductivity and higher values of the dielectric constant. The resistance and capacitance of grains and grain boundaries were analyzed by modeling the experimental results using an equivalent circuit.
