AB  - Thin films on the base of titanium oxynitrides and copper doped titanium nitride were obtained by a combination of different PVD techniques on the surface of glass substrate and their physicochemical properties were analyzed in details. Phase composition of the samples was analyzed by XRD and FTIR methods, while microstructure of the samples was analyzed by SEM. XPS was used for depth profiling of the samples, which enabled determination of the oxidative state of titanium and corresponding phases through various film layers from the surface to the substrate. The depth of the various layers and their extinction coefficients and refractory indexes were estimated by spectroscopic ellipsometry.

AB  - Background/Aim. The materials used nowadays for bone replacement do not fully meet the requirements for complete regeneration, which is why new ones are being tested. Despite numerous attempts to improve bone tissue regeneration, no fulfilling material has been found yet. This study investigated the influence of poly-lactide-co-glycolide (PLGA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) as coatings for hydroxyapatite (HAP) bone carriers on bone tissue regenerative potential in rabbits? calvarial defect. Methods. Calvarial defects measuring 6 mm in diameter were made in 19 skeletally mature rabbits. Defects were filled with one of the following materials: PLGA coated HAP (HAP + PLGA), PEI coated HAP (HAP + PEI), and bovine HAP ? Bio-Oss? (positive control). Unfilled defects represented negative control. Histological analysis was performed in order to determine the inflammatory response of the host tissue. The formation of the new bone was evaluated using histomorphometric analysis. All analyses have been conducted in samples obtained 3, 6, and 9 weeks after implantation. Results. Three weeks post-implantation, a trend toward increased healing in the HAP + PLGA group compared to other investigated materials was noticed, with no statistically significant difference between the study groups (p > 0.05). AB  - Uvod/Cilj. Materijali koji se u današnje vreme koriste za nadoknadu koštanog tkiva ne dovode do kompletne regeneracije, zbog čega se ispituju novi. Uprkos mnogobrojnim pokušajima da se poboljša regeneracija koštanog tkiva, još uvek nije pronađen materijal koji ispunjava sve kriterijume. Cilj rada bio je da se utvrdi uticaj poli(laktid-ko-glikolida) (PLGA) i polietilenimina (PEI), kao premaza za oblaganje hidroksiapatita (HAP), na regenerativni potencijal koštanog tkiva u defektu kalvarije zeca. Metode. Kod 19 zečeva „zrelog” skeleta načinjeni su defekti kalvarije dijametra 6 mm. Defekti su potom ispunjeni jednim od sledećih materijala: HAP obložen PLGA (HAP + PLGA), HAP obložen PEI (HAP + PEI) i goveđi HAP – Bio-Oss® (pozitivna kontrola). Prazni defekti su predstavljali negativnu kontrolu. Inflamacijska reakcija tkiva domaćina je ispitana histološkom analizom. Formiranje nove kosti je procenjivano histomorfometrijskom analizom. U pogledu stimulisanja osteogeneze u rekonstruktivnoj hirurgiji kostiju, PLGA je pokazao veći potencijal prekrivanja defekta od PEI.

Biocompatibility study of a new dental cement based on hydroxyapatite and calcium silicates: Focus on liver, kidney, and spleen tissue effects

AB  - The effects of a new material based on hydroxyapatite and calcium silicates, named ALBO-MPCA, were investigated on the liver, kidney and spleen. The material was administrated orally for 120 days in an in vivo model in Wistar rats, and untreated animals served as a control. Hematological and biochemical blood parameters were analyzed. Qualitative histological analysis of tissues, change in mitotic activity of cells, and histological characteristics was conducted, as well as quantitative stereological analysis of parenchymal cells, blood sinusoids, and connective tissues. Additionally, the protein expressions of Ki67 and CD68 markers were evaluated. Histological analysis revealed no pathological changes after the tested period. It showed the preservation of the architecture of blood sinusoids and epithelial cells and the presence of mitosis. Additionally, the significantly increased number of the Ki67 in the presence of ALBO-MPCA confirmed the proliferative effect of the material noticed by stereological analysis, while immunoreactive CD68 positive cells did not differ between groups. The study showed non-toxicity of the tested material based on the effects on the hematological, biochemical, and observed histological parameters; in addition, it showed evidence of its biocompatibility. These results could be the basis for further steps toward the application of tested materials in endodontics.

Swelling properties and drug release of new biocompatible POEGOPGMA hydrogels with VPTT near to the human body temperature

Charac‑ terisation of the hydrogels was conducted by swelling, UV–Vis, scanning electron microscope, diferential scanning calorimetry and in  vitro biocompatibility (cyto‑ compatibility and haemolytic activity) investigations. The modelling of drug release and difusion characteristics was tested using cephalexin drug. For the frst time, it was shown how to efectively tune the volume phase transition temperature (VPTT) values of the hydrogels by changing the ratio of more hydrophilic (EG) and more hydrophobic (PG) units in (EGPG) “block” pendant chains. The obtained hydrogels revealed the great potential for diferent biomedical applications not only due to the possibility to tune VPTT in the desired way but also due to the good biocompatibil‑ ity and controlled drug delivery within the target temperature range.

Histological Evaluation of Periradicular Tissue Inflammatory Reactions and Calcified Tissue Formations after Implantation of Experimental Calcium Silicate and Hydroxyapatite Based Nanostructural Cements into Root Canals of Rabbits Teeth

AB  - The aim of the study was to evaluate inflammatory tissue reactions and the formation of calcified tissue after implantation of experimental nanostructured calcium silicate cement (CS) and hydroxyapatite with calcium silicate cement (HA-CS) into root canals of rabbits' teeth. The study was conducted on four rabbits of the genus Oryctolagus cuniculus. After instrumentation and irrigation, the root canals of the central incisors were dried and filled with CS, HA-CS and control material (MTA Angelus). The animals were sacrificed after 28 days. After histological preparation and hematoxylin-eosin staining, tissue samples were evaluated for the intensity and extension of inflammatory tissue reaction; continuity, morphology and thickness of the newly formed calcified tissue; and presence of giant cells, materials particles and microorganisms. Kruskal Wallis and Dunn's post hoc test were used for data analysis (α=0.05). There were no significant differences in the intensity of inflammatory reactions between CS, HA-CS and MTA control. HA-CS showed significantly better results than MTA and CS with respect to continuity of the newly formed calcified tissue (P=0.003 and P=0.010, respectively). Significant differences in thickness of the calcified tissue existed between CS and MTA (P=0.004) and between HA-CS and MTA (P=0.012). Application of CS and HA-CS resulted in minimal inflammatory tissue response, similar to the MTA control. CS and HA-CS were more efficient than MTA in supporting hard tissue formation. The best organized newly formed calcified tissue was seen after HA-CS application.
AB  - Cilj rada je bio da se ispitaju Kanali korena centralnih sekutića su posle instrumentacije, ispiranja i sušenja napunjeni materijalima CS, HA-CS i kontrolnim materijalom, mineral trioksid agregatom (MTA). Životinje su žrtvovane posle 28 dana. Posle histološke pripreme, uzorci tkiva su analizirani u pogledu inteziteta i raširenosti zapaljenske reakcije; kontinuiteta, morfologije i debljine novoformiranog kalcifi kovanog tkiva; prisustva džinovskih ćelija, čestica materijala i mikroorganizama. Dobijeni rezultati su statistički obrađeni (α = 0,05) Nisu uočene statistički značajne razlike u intezitetu zapaljenske reakcije između CS, HA-CS i MTA. U pogledu kontinuiteta novostvorenog kalcifi kovanog tkiva HA-CS je pokazao bolje rezultate u odnosu na MTA i CS (p=0,003 i p=0,010). AB  - The aim of this study was to develop novel hydroxyapatite (HAP)-based bioactive bone replacement materials for segmental osteotomy reconstruction. Customized three-dimensional (3D) bone construct was manufactured from nanohydroxyapatite (nHAP) with poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) coating using 3D models derived from the computed tomography (CT) scanning of the rabbit's ulna and gradient 3D printing of the bone substitute mimicking the anatomical shape of the natural bone defect. Engineered construct revealed adequate micro-architectural design for successful bone regeneration having a total porosity of 64% and an average pore size of 256 μm. Radiography and micro-CT analysis depicted new bone apposition through the whole length of the reconstructed ulna with a small area of non-resorbed construct in the central area of defect. Histological analysis revealed new bone formation with both endochondral and endesmal type of ossification. Immunohistochemistry analysis depicted the presence of bone formation indicators-bone morphogenetic protein (BMP), osteocalcin (OCN) and osteopontin (OPN) within newly formed bone. Manufactured personalized construct acts as a "smart" responsive biomaterial capable of modulating the functionality and potential for the personalized bone reconstruction on a clinically relevant length scale.

corresponding theoretical thermoelastic counterparts, for high enough modulation frequencies mainly. It is shown that the amplitude of the
thermoelastic component of plasma-thin samples varies about two orders of magnitude with respect to the corresponding one of
plasma-thick samples. Furthermore, we find a maximal temperature difference ΔT =− 35 nK between the illuminated and non-illuminated
sample surfaces, which shows that thin silicon plates with excess carriers could be used as heat sinks.

AB  - Novel three-dimensional (3D) nanohydroxyapatite-PLGA scaffolds with high porosity was developed to better mimic mineral component and microstructure of natural bone. To perform a final assessment of this nanomaterial as a potential bone substitute, its toxicological profile was particularly investigated. Therefore, we performed a comet assay on human monocytes for in vitro genotoxicity investigation, and the systemic subchronic toxicity investigation on rats being per oral feed with exactly administrated extract quantities of the nano calcium hydroxyapatite covered with tiny layers of PLGA (ALBO-OS) for 120 days. Histological and stereological parameters of the liver, kidney, and spleen tissue were analyzed. Comet assay revealed low genotoxic potential, while histological analysis and stereological investigation revealed no significant changes in exposed animals when compared to controls, although the volume density of blood sinusoids and connective tissue, as well as numerical density and number of mitosis were slightly increased. Additionally, despite the significantly increased average number of the Ki67 and slightly increased number of CD68 positive cells in the presence of ALBO-OS, immunoreactive cells proliferation was almost neglected. Blood analyses showed that all of the blood parameters in rats fed with extract nanomaterial are comparable with corresponding parameters of no feed rats, taken as blind probe. This study contributes to the toxicological profiling of ALBO-OS scaffold for potential future application in bone tissue engineering.

The resistance of poly-(l-lactide) to gamma radiation: effect of initial preparation and crystallinity

AB  - In order to investigate the resistance of poly-(l-lactide) (PLLA) to high-energy radiation, two varieties of samples with substantial differences in microstructure and crystallinity are prepared and exposed to the gamma radiation to various absorbed doses (up to 300 kGy). Since the PLLA morphology is sensitive to preparation conditions and radiation, surface microstructures are analyzed by scanning electronic microscopy. The chain scission degradation is followed using a gel permeation chromatography, while the additional characterization is conducted by differential scanning calorimetry, wide-angle X-ray diffraction method and IR spectroscopy. Presented results show that the quenched samples are more susceptible to radiation than initially high crystalline ones. Furthermore, the radiation leads to two considerably dissimilar recrystallization dynamics, connected with initial structural differences and the presence/absence of taut-tie chains. Radiation-induced increase in the crystallinity (more than 25% of initial value) for the quenched samples is noticeable at low radiation doses. © 2019, Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature.

The films morphology was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Investigations of the films wettability, either with water or ethylene glycol, showed that it depends directly on the concentration of oxygen vacancies. The wettability mechanism was particularly discussed.

The deposition of hydroxyapatite (HAP) on the surface of titanium (Ti) alloys enhances bioactivity and osseointegration of the alloys which are widely used as implant materials in dentistry and orthopaedic surgery. However, the stability of HAP and subsequent biocompatibility of such alloys depends on the coating technique. The aim of this work was to test the cytotoxicity of a Ti alloy (Ti6Al4V), coated with HAP by a new plasma deposition method. Methods. The Ti6Al4V samples prepared as discs, 10 mm in diameter and 2 mm in thickness, were coated with HAP (one or both sides of the alloy) by an innovative atmospheric plasma jet method. The cytotoxicity of uncoated and HAP coated Ti6Al4V samples was evaluated by examining the morphological changes and viability of L929 fibroblasts in direct contact with the test materials. Adequate negative (polystyrene) and positive (nickel) control discs of the same size were used. The indirect cytotoxicity was determined by cultivating L929 cells with conditioning medium (CM), prepared as extract of the test samples incubated in the complete Roswell Park Memorial Institute (RPMI) 1640 medium for cell cultures. The cytotoxic effect was evaluated based on the degree of metabolic activity, necrosis, apoptosis and proliferation of L929 cells, using the appropriate assays. Results. Uncoated and one side HAP coated Ti6Al4V alloys were classified as non-cytotoxic according to the current ISO 10993-5 criteria, whereas two sides HAP coated Ti6Al4V alloy samples were slightlymoderate cytotoxic. The cytotoxicity manifested as the inhibition of metabolic activity and proliferation of L929 cells as well as the induction of their apoptosis and necrosis was significantly reduced by conditioning of HAP/Ti6Al4V alloys for 24 hours. The cytotoxic effect of HAP/Ti6Al4V CM only partly decreased in the presence of nifelate, a calcium (Ca) channel blocker, suggesting that Ca ions were not the only responsible cytotoxic agent. Conclusion. The original HAP coating procedure by atmospheric plasma spraying with high energy input enables the production of the stable adhesive coatings on Ti6Al4V alloys. Their cytotoxicity, which depends on the quantity of HAP coating layer, could be significantly reduced up to the non-cytotoxic level by prior conditioning of the alloys in culture medium. AB  - Aim: To examine the potential systemic toxicity of nanostructured materials based on calcium silicate and calcium aluminate, for potential application in Dentistry. Methodology: Twenty-four Albino Wistar rats aged 2 months were used as an in vivo animal model for subcutaneous implantation of the investigated materials, placed in polyethylene tubes. Thirty days after implantation, the livers of the rats were analysed and following histological and stereological parameters were evaluated for volume density of hepatocytes and blood sinusoids, number and numerical density of hepatocytes, surface of hepatocytes and their nucleuses, nucleocytoplasmic ratio and mitotic index of hepatocytes. Stereological measurements were achieved using Cavalieri's principle, with grid P2 and unbiased analysis. Additionally, immunohistochemistry studies were performed to further analyse changes in liver tissue. Several haematological and biochemical parameters of blood of experimental animals were also analysed, as well as local tissue reactions around the implants. Statistical analysis was performed using parametric (anova and t-test) and nonparametric tests (Kruskal–Wallis and Mann–Whitney U-test) depending on data distribution. Results: Implanted dental cements led to an increase in stereological and histological parameters in liver tissue compared to control rats. Although the investigated parameters mostly showed significant differences between control and experimental animals, the liver tissue of the experimental animals did not have visible signs of pathological changes. This was supported by the analysis of blood parameters which were not significantly different between control and experimental animals. Also, the subcutaneous tissues had minimal inflammatory reactions. Immunohistochemistry studies revealed that nanostructured materials induced proliferation of hepatocytes, but that the immunological response to the materials was not strong enough to induce proliferation of immunoreactive cells in liver in the observed time period. Conclusions: This study was performed as a contribution to the attestation of the biocompatibility of dental cements based on calcium silicate and calcium aluminate. Although these materials induced several changes in the liver structure, they were not clinically relevant and represent a normal and reversible response of the liver to the presence of biocompatible materials in the body. Blood and immunohistochemistry analyses and local tissue reactions further confirmed that these materials possess good biocompatible potential. © 2019 International Endodontic Journal. AB  - Dental cement materials have been developed with the aim to replace hard dental tissues. The first material used for pulp capping, root canal obturation, bifurcation perforation and apexification is calcium hydroxide (in 1920). A half century later, glass-ionomer cements began to suppress it as dentine substitutes. Finally, in the 1990s, calcium silicate (CS) material appeared in the dental research community as the most promising dentine substitute capable to adequately meet all clinical requirements. The aim of this paper is to present an overview of literature related to studies about CS materials taking into account their physical, chemical and biological properties and clinical applications. This review aims to discuss beneficial and adverse characteristics of CSs concerning interactions to the hard dentine and soft pulp/periodontal tissues. This review article deals with the literature data about currently commercially available CS concerning laboratory and clinical findings. 109 scientific articles were analyzed of which 62 references reported in vitro and 26 in vivo investigations while 21 references comprised reports, reviews and books dealing with both, in vitro and in vivo investigations. Although further data collection is necessary, CSs are promising materials that represent a gold standard for numerous dental clinical procedures. © 2019, Association of Chemists and Chemical Engineers of Serbia. AB  - The oligo(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate (OEGDMA), one of the most commonly utilized crosslinking monomers, was used to tailor thermoresponsive POEGDMA hydrogels by varying the monomer/solvent feed ratio (from 10 to 100 wt% of monomer). For the first time, synthesis of different POEGDMA homopolymeric networks was performed by gamma radiation, and due to the expected thermoresponsiveness their temperature-dependent properties were extensively analysed. The sol-gel study was performed as the first step after radiation-induced synthesis. The swelling properties were investigated over the wide pH (2.2–9.0) and temperature (5–80 °C) range. Characterization of structure and properties was additionally conducted by SEM, DSC, FTIR, and UV–Vis spectroscopy. The results indicated that all POEGDMA hydrogels showed a high gel content, inverse thermoresponse and volume phase transition temperature (VPTT) with no respect to initial preparation. On the other hand, by altering the monomer/solvent ratio in the prepolymerisation mixture a large diversity in the microstructure, swelling capacity and VPTT was obtained. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd

AB  - Background/Aim. The main task of endodontic treatment is to eliminate pathologically altered tissue, to disinfect root canal space and to obtain its three-dimensional hermetic obturation. The main purpose of this study was to evaluate antimicrobial activity of new endodontic nano-structured highly active calcium silicates based materials albo-mineral plyoxide carbonate aggregate (ALBO-MPCA) and calcium silicates (CS) in comparison to mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA+) and UltraCal XS (CH). Methods. The antimicrobial activity of materials was tested against Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923) and Enterococcus faecalis (ATCC 14506) strains, and following clinical isolates: Rothia dentocariosa, Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus anginosus and Streptococcus vestibularis using a double layer agar diffusion test. The pH measurements were performed using the pH meter. Total amount of released ions was determined by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). Results. All tested materials showed the best antibacterial potential after 1 h of incubation. After 3h and 24h of the incubation period, the antibacterial potential of all tested materials were similar. The Agar diffusion test showed that ALBO-MPCA, CS and MTA+ had similar inhibition zones (p > 0.05), except in the activity against Staphylococcus aureus where ALBO-MPCA showed better antimicrobial properties than MTA+ in 3h and 24h of the incubation period (p < 0.05). Following 24h of the incubation, the inhibition zones were the strongest with CH against Staphylococcus aureus (16.67 ± 2.34 mm) followed by ALBO-MPCA (14.67 ± 1.21 mm) and the weakest with CS against Enterococcus faecalis (6.50 ± 1.76 mm). CH showed the highest pH, followed by ALBO-MPCA, CS and MTA+. Conclusion. abstract = "Background/Aim. The main task of endodontic treatment is to eliminate pathologically altered tissue, to disinfect root canal space and to obtain its three-dimensional hermetic obturation. The main purpose of this study was to evaluate antimicrobial activity of new endodontic nano-structured highly active calcium silicates based materials albo-mineral plyoxide carbonate aggregate (ALBO-MPCA) and calcium silicates (CS) in comparison to mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA+) and UltraCal XS (CH). Methods. The antimicrobial activity of materials was tested against Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923) and Enterococcus faecalis (ATCC 14506) strains, and following clinical isolates: Rothia dentocariosa, Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus anginosus and Streptococcus vestibularis using a double layer agar diffusion test. The pH measurements were performed using the pH meter. Total amount of released ions was determined by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). Results. All tested materials showed the best antibacterial potential after 1 h of incubation. After 3h and 24h of the incubation period, the antibacterial potential of all tested materials were similar. The Agar diffusion test showed that ALBO-MPCA, CS and MTA+ had similar inhibition zones (p > 0.05), except in the activity against Staphylococcus aureus where ALBO-MPCA showed better antimicrobial properties than MTA+ in 3h and 24h of the incubation period (p < 0.05). Following 24h of the incubation, the inhibition zones were the strongest with CH against Staphylococcus aureus (16.67 ± 2.34 mm) followed by ALBO-MPCA (14.67 ± 1.21 mm) and the weakest with CS against Enterococcus faecalis (6.50 ± 1.76 mm). CH showed the highest pH, followed by ALBO-MPCA, CS and MTA+. Conclusion. Methods Twenty-seven traumatized single-rooted permanent teeth diagnosed with necrotic pulps and chronic periapical lesions were treated with non-surgical procedure using a tri-antibiotic paste and calcium hydroxide as intra-canal medication. Definitive obturation was performed with ProRoot MTA (Dentsply Tulsa Dental Specialties, Tulsa, OK, USA) or MTA+ Cerkamed (Cerkamed, Stalowa Wola, Poland). Control follow-ups were done three, six, 12, and 24 months following the completion of treatment. Results The positive clinical outcome was recorded in 24 (88.9%) cases, while radiographic success was present in 26 (96.3%) cases. A statistically significant decrease in the sizes of periapical lesions was consistently observed at follow-up periods (p < 0.001). There was no statistically significant difference between the two tested MTA materials (p > 0.05). Conclusion The MTA products were effective for the root canal obturation and appeared to contribute to the significant reduction or complete regression of periapical lesions in teeth treated. AB  - Ultrasmall iron oxide (USPIO) nanoparticles, with diameter mostly less than 3 nm dispersed in an organic carrier fluid were synthesized by polyol route. The evolution of ZFC-FC magnetization curves with temperature, as well as the shift of the ac susceptibility peaks upon changing the frequency, reveal that the nanoparticles in the fluid are non-interacting and superparamagnetic with the blocking temperature T-B similar to 10 K. The Mossbauer spectra analysis proposed the core/shell structure of the nanoparticles consisting of stoichiometric gamma-Fe2O3 core and non-stoichiometric shell. The nanoparticle surface layer has a great influence on their properties which is principally manifested in significant reduction of the magnetization and in a large increase in magnetic anisotropy. Magnetic moments do not saturate in fields up to 5 T, even at the lowest measured temperature, T = 5 K. The average magnetic particle diameter is changed from 1.3 to 1.8 nm with increasing magnetic field from 0 to 5 T which is noticeably smaller than the particle sizes measured by TEM. The estimated effective magnetic anisotropy constant value, K-eff = 2 x 10(5) J/m(3), is two orders of magnitude higher than in the bulk maghemite. Measurements of the longitudinal and transverse NMR relaxivity parameters on water diluted nanoparticle dispersions at 1.5 T gave the values r(1) = 0.028 mmol(-1) s(-1), r(2) = 0.050 mmol(-1) s(-1) and their ratio r(2)/r(1) = 1.8. Continuous increase of the T-1-weighted MRI signal intensity with increasing Fe concentration in the nanoparticle dispersions was observed which makes this ferrofluid to behave as a positive T-1 contrast agent. AB  - The aim of this study was to investigate the biocompatibility of nanostructured materials based on highly active calcium silicates mixed with different radiocontrast agents in comparison to MTA+ using in vitro and in vivo model. Morphology of materials’ samples was analyzed using SEM while the phase compositions were identified by XRD. pH values of materials’ suspensions were conducted by pH-meter. The cytotoxicity of materials’ solutions was tested by MTT test (100, 50, 25 and 12.5 mg/ml). LDH and 3H-thymidine assay were utilized for biocompatibility investigations of materials’ eluates (24 h, 7 day and 21 day). Eighteen Guinea pigs were used for intramuscular implantation, as teflon tubes with freshly prepared materials were placed into intramuscular pockets. All samples were composed of round and needle-like particles equally distributed with Ca/Si ratio ~2.7 at%, with the presence of hydrated calcium silicate phases. The pH values of ALBO-MPCA1 and ALBO-MPCA2 were high alkaline, while in case of MTA+ they were lower and continuously declined (p < 0.05). Investigated materials didn’t exhibit dose-dependent effect on metabolic activity of L929 cells (p > 0.05). abstract = "The aim of this study was to investigate the biocompatibility of nanostructured materials based on highly active calcium silicates mixed with different radiocontrast agents in comparison to MTA+ using in vitro and in vivo model. Morphology of materials’ samples was analyzed using SEM while the phase compositions were identified by XRD. pH values of materials’ suspensions were conducted by pH-meter. The cytotoxicity of materials’ solutions was tested by MTT test (100, 50, 25 and 12.5 mg/ml). LDH and 3H-thymidine assay were utilized for biocompatibility investigations of materials’ eluates (24 h, 7 day and 21 day). Eighteen Guinea pigs were used for intramuscular implantation, as teflon tubes with freshly prepared materials were placed into intramuscular pockets. All samples were composed of round and needle-like particles equally distributed with Ca/Si ratio ~2.7 at%, with the presence of hydrated calcium silicate phases. The pH values of ALBO-MPCA1 and ALBO-MPCA2 were high alkaline, while in case of MTA+ they were lower and continuously declined (p < 0.05). Investigated materials didn’t exhibit dose-dependent effect on metabolic activity of L929 cells (p > 0.05). AB  - As an alternative to MTA, a new endodontic material based on hydroxyapatite and calcium silicates (ALBO-MPSA) has been synthesized, and its biocompatibility has been studied in many in vitro and in vivo studies. The current study aims to evaluate a subchronic systemic toxicity of ALBO-MPSA on the rat animal model, as a continuation of the previous studies. Biochemical parameters of blood and histological parameters of the liver, kidneys, and spleen of the rats were analyzed after 120 days of consumption of the aqueous extract of ALBO-MPSA. The results showed no myelotoxic effect or autoimmune effect on peripheral blood cells and no pathological effect on the liver, kidney, and spleen tissues. Besides, no changes in the skin and hair of the rats, neither the change in the consumption of food and water, nor the change in their usual behavior were noticed during the experiment.
