AB - Poly(vinyl alcohol)/graphene (PVA/Gr) nanocomposite was synthesized with the aim of developing a novel improved material. The PVA/Gr nanocomposite was characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses, and the interaction of PVA molecules with graphene was examined. Introduction of Gr led to improved mechanical and thermal properties of the PVA/Gr nanocomposite compared to pure PVA, as well as strong antibacterial activity against the bacterial strain Staphylococcus aureus. The PVA/Gr nanocomposite was non-cytotoxic against healthy peripheral blood mononuclear cells by MTT assay, indicating its high potential for biomedical applications. AB - Silver/poly(vinyl alcohol) and silver/poly(vinyl alcohol)/graphene nanocomposites in different forms (colloid dispersion, thin films and hydrogel discs) were synthesized by electrochemical reduction of Ag+ ions at constant current density. CV, Raman, XRD, FT-IR, and XPS analyses were used to characterize the interactions between silver nanoparticles, PVA molecules, and graphene. Ag/PVA/Gr nanocomposites had better mechanical and thermal properties and higher antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli than Ag/PVA nanocomposites. Slow silver release, as well as a high remaining silver content (76%) after 28 days in simulated body fluid confirmed that both Ag/PVA and Ag/PVA/Gr nanocomposites are capable of maintaining sterility over time. AB - Electrochemical synthesis was employed to prepare a novel hydroxyapatite/graphene (HAP/Gr) composite powder suitable for medical applications as a hard tissue implant (scaffold). The synthesis was performed in a homogeneous dispersion containing Na(2)H(2)EDTA center dot 2H(2)O, NaH2PO4 and CaCl2 with a Ca/EDTA/PO43- concentration ratio of 0.25/0.25/0.15M, along with 0.01 wt% added graphene nanosheets, at a current density of 137 mA cm(-2) and pH value of 9.0. The field emission scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy observations of the composite HAP/Gr powder indicated that nanosized hydroxyapatite particles were uniformly placed in the graphene overlay. Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction confirmed graphene incorporation in the HAP/Gr powder. The electrochemically prepared HAP/Gr composite powder exhibited slight antibacterial effect against the growth of the bacterial strain Staphylococcus aureus.
