AB - The structure of the unbound 15F nucleus is investigated using the inverse kinematics resonant scattering of a radioactive 14O beam impinging on a CH2 target. The analysis of 1H(14O,p)14O and 1H(14O,2p)13N reactions allowed the confirmation of the previously observed narrow 1/2− resonance, near the two-proton decay threshold, and the identification of two new narrow 5/2− and 3/2− resonances. The newly observed levels decay by 1p emission to the ground of 14O, and by sequential 2p emission to the ground state of 13N via the 1− resonance of 14O. Gamow shell model (GSM) analysis of the experimental data suggests that the wave functions of the 5/2− and 3/2− resonances may be collectivized by the continuum coupling to nearby 2p- and 1p-decay channels. The observed excitation function 1H(14O,p)14O and resonance spectrum in 15F are well reproduced in the unified framework of the GSM.

AB - Specific activity of 137Cs, 40K, and 210Pb radionuclides in fifteen selected medicinal herbs from three locations in Central Serbia (two mountains, Kopaonik and Zlatar, and a valley, Sokobanja) was measured using two semiconductor HPGe spectrometer systems. The obtained values are in intervals (<0.3 ÷ 9.7) Bq/kg, (<0.2 ÷ 24.7) Bq/kg, and (<0.2 ÷ 5.7) Bq/kg for 137Cs; in intervals (125 ÷ 1100) Bq/kg, (104 ÷ 872) Bq/kg, and (103 ÷ 954) Bq/kg for 40K, and in intervals (3.6 ÷ 49.0) Bq/kg, (3.9 ÷ 57.9) Bq/kg, and (2.8 ÷ 103) Bq/kg for 210Pb, for herbs from Kopaonik, Sokobanja and Zlatar, respectively. The highest activity measured in individual herbs was: 24.7 Bq/kg for 137Cs (Sokobanja valley), 1100 Bq/kg for 40K (Mt. Kopaonik) and 103 Bq/kg for 210Pb (Mt. Zlatar). The corresponding individual annual effective doses due to ingestion calculated from the measured activity concentrations, of the radionuclides are: in intervals (<1.7 ÷ 82.9) nSv, (<1.4 ÷ 211) nSv, and (<1.1 ÷ 48.7) nSv for 137Cs; in intervals (0.76 ÷ 4.5) μSv, (0.64 ÷ 4.4) μSv, and (0.63 ÷ 4.9) μSv for 40K, and in intervals (1.1 ÷ 18.2) μSv, (1.3 ÷ 21.6) μSv, (0.9 ÷ 38.3) μSv for 210Pb, respectively. The specific activity concentration values of 137Cs and 40K obtained for the investigated herbs are similar to the literature data, while no information was found in literature about specific activity concentration of 210Pb. The all values obtained for individual annual effective dose due to ingestion are less than 100 μSv, which means that the daily use of 200 mL of herbal infusion during a year made from the investigated herbs does not represent a radiological risk for health. However, a high individual annual effective dose of ingestion of 210Pb obtained for some herbs indicate that their consumption in larger amounts 2–3 cups of infusion daily over a year could make the dose to exceed the recommended level, and points to necessity for extensive investigation of 210Pb activity concentration worldwide. © 2019 Elsevier B.V.

AB - The second most important source of indoor radon, after soil beneath dwelling, is building material. With the increase in environmental awareness and new energy-saving policies, residents tend to replace the existing windows with tighter windows, which leads to a decrease in air exchange rate and consequently an increase in indoor radon concentration. In case of low exchange rates, dose caused by inhalation of radon and its progeny can exceed external dose originating from the radium content in the surrounding building material. In this paper, surface exhalation rates of radon ( 222 Rn) and thoron ( 220 Rn) from typical building materials used for construction and interior decoration of houses in Serbia were investigated. Surface exhalation rate measurements were performed using the closed-chamber method, while concentrations of radon and thoron in the chamber were continuously measured using an active device, RTM1688-2, produced by SARAD® GmbH. Finally, the impact of the replacement of windows on the indoor radon concentration was estimated.

Surface exhalation rate measurements were performed using the closed-chamber method, while concentrations of radon and thoron in the chamber were continuously measured using an active device, RTM1688-2, produced by SARAD® GmbH. Finally, the impact of the replacement of windows on the indoor radon concentration was estimated.",

AB - Various imported building materials commonly used in construction and industry in Serbia were analyzed using gamma spectrometry. Based on the activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K in the investigated samples, radium equivalent activity, Raeq, absorbed dose rate, D, annual effective dose, DE, and the external hazard index, Hex, were calculated to assess the radiation hazard for people. The Raeq for most of the analyzed samples (416 in total) was lower than the maximum admissible value of 370 Bqkg-1 set in the UNSCEAR report. The absorbed gamma dose rate in air was found to vary from 0.030 mGyh-1 to 1.328 mGyh-1 which in some cases exceeded indoor dose rates in Europe. The obtained values for annual effective dose exceed the limits of 0.41 mSv given in literature for about 5 % of measured samples, while values of Hex were higher than unity for three samples of cement, eight samples of granite, and one sand sample. As a possible source of elevated effective dose, the radon exhalation from building materials was estimated using the parameters given in literature. The internal dose due to 222Rn exhaled from the building material was found to be up to nine times higher than external dose due to 226Ra content in some cases.

AB - Open-faced charcoal canisters have been used for radon measurements for over 40 years. This method is sensitive to temperature, changing radon concentrations, humidity and other parameters, but a comprehensive study dealing with the influence quantities and measurement uncertainty was not available in literature. In this paper, all the identified influence quantities are discussed in detail, uncertainty budget is developed, good practice and bad practice examples are introduced and new recommendations are proposed to optimize the method and reduce uncertainty.

AB - Lifetimes of low-lying states in 73Ga and 70,72,74Zn were measured using the Recoil Distance Doppler Shift (RDDS) method. These nuclei were produced in deep-inelastic reactions in inverse kinematics with a 208Pb beam impinging on a 76Ge target. Prompt γ rays were detected using the AGATA tracking array coupled to the VAMOS++ spectrometer. Lifetime of the 5/2- state in 73Ga, measured for the first time, provides additional evidence for the existence of a 1/2-, 3/2- ground-state doublet. The lifetimes of the 4+ states in 70,72,74Zn were remeasured in an attempt to understand the discrepancies observed between earlier measurements. Our results are in agreement with those of previous plunger experiments.

AB - Medicinal plants have a long history in traditional medicine worldwide. However, their use, as well as the use of plant products, must be controlled in order to avoid the occurrence of undesirable effects on human health. Specific activities of radionuclides 40K, 137Cs and 210Pb in samples of medicinal plants were measured using a semi-conductor HPGe spectrometer system. The average annual effective dose for adults due to daily ingestion of 200 ml herbal infusion prepared from medicinal plants is determined. In this paper a radiological analysis of 7 selected medicinal plants from the area of Majdanpekis presented. The values obtained for an effective dose of ingestion are similar to the values published in other studies and are less than 100 μSv, suggesting that the daily use of herbal infusions from analyzed medicinal plants from the Majdanpek area does not represent a significant radiological health risk

AB - Center for permanent education (CPE) of the "Vinča" Institute of nuclear sciences is a unique educational institution in Serbia. The main objective of the CPE is an additional and complementary education of various profiles of specialists who use radioactive isotopes and sources of ionizing radiation in their everyday work. The CPE aims to improve the quality of its services and strives to continuously follow and introduce modern and new methods of education. The increasing development of information technologies has influenced the development of methods and techniques in the education itself. The latest trend in education is to replace the real laboratories with the virtual ones. The employees of the Center for Permanent Education have, therefore, decided to enrich the CPE courses with virtual software applications. Their use explains the basic concepts of ionizing radiation protection and safety in a simple, easy and fun way. In this paper, we describe some of the virtual software applications that are used in the laboratory curriculum of the CPE courses aimed at furthering education of professionals who work with radioactive sources and generators of ionizing radiation.

AB - The EC has laid down directive 2013/59/EURATOM which represents basic safety standards regarding the radon protection of the European citizens. Within the BSS they oblige countries to establish radon action plans which include identification of Radon Priority Areas (RPA). Since it is not feasible to perform indoor radon measurements in each dwelling, it is necessary to carefully design indoor radon survey in order to get representative estimation of annual average indoor radon concentration of the certain territory. It is not sufficient only to have representative selection of dwellings, but it is important to keep uncertainty of measurement and estimation of annual radon concentration as low as possible. Uncertainty of classification of radon zones is therefore combination of uncertainties coming from a single measurement uncertainty and uncertainty of extrapolation of single or group of measurements to the whole region. In this contribution, we will try to estimate sources of classification uncertainties and to give recommendation in order to reduce level of uncertainty. The research presented in this paper was realized within 16ENV04 MetroRADON project. This project has received funding from the EMPIR programme co-financed by the Participating States and from the European Union‘s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme.

AB - The high radon concentrations were measured in three rooms in one house at the beginning of 2018. After that, radon testing was continued during all seasons and the number of rooms was increased to five. As expected, the concentration of radon during the summer was much lower than in the winter period, primarily due to constant natural ventilation. In other seasons, a large increase in radon concentration with a decrease in the outside temperature was observed. There was also a decrease in radon concentrations in all rooms in the following winter, in approximately the same cold period, when wood pellets were used instead of coal.

AB - The uncertainty of the measurement results is an indicator of the quality of the performed measurement. In the testing laboratories, the combined measurement uncertainty is usually given at the level of confidence of 95% (k = 2). If the laboratory analysis is preceded by a sampling procedure, the uncertainty budget of the measurement results should (according to ISO17025: 2017) include the uncertainty arising from the sampling procedure. This paper describes the procedure for estimating the uncertainty of the results of measurement due to sampling.

AB - Radon is natural radioactive gas. It is colourless, tasteless, odourless and therefore it cannot be detected by human senses, but should be measured. It was discovered at the beginning of XX century. At that time, high radon concentrations were measured in the Bohemian silver mines. However it took four decades before a connection between high radon concentration and lung cancer was assumed and one decade more to link radon progeny as a possible cause of lung cancer. Numerous epidemiological studies have shown that radon with its progeny represents second cause of lung cancer after smoking. The importance of investigation of radon and its progeny was acknowledged at the very beginning of Symposiums of Yugoslav society of radiation protection. Thus, already at the first Symposium, held in 1963, there were already several papers published regarding radon concentration measurements in mines and spas. In the first few proceeding of the Symposium the main contribution was from Serbian Institute of Occupational Health. In this publication, an overview of research on radon, published in previous 29 Proceedings of symposiums of Radiation Protection Society, was given. Evolution of actuality of different radon topics was discussed and overview of used measurement techniques was given. Finally, it was estimated in which directions development of radon topics might go.

AB - Most studies focused on thoron have shown that indoor thoron originates mainly from building materials and that thoron concentrations exponentially decrease with a distance from a wall surface. On the contrary, due to longer half-lives of thoron progenies, 212 Pb and 212 Bi, which are mainly responsible for the bronchial dose, it is expected that their spatial distribution is homogeneous. Therefore, direct measurements of thoron progeny concentrations or direct thoron measurement and determination of thoron equilibrium factor are necessary for accurate dose assessment. In this paper, we have optimized and validated a reliable and inexpensive method for direct measurement of thoron progenies concentrations based on an air filtration followed by gamma spectrometry measurements. With simultaneous measurements of indoor thoron by the RAD7 active device, the equilibrium factor for thoron in 15 different investigated dwellings was estimated. Obtained results for the equilibrium equivalent thoron concentrations in the range from 0.277 Bq/m 3 to 11.34 Bq/m 3 and thoron equilibrium factor in the range from 0.0047 to 0.098 with arithmetic mean value of 0.034 are in good agreement with already published results. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd

AB - The paper deals with the analysis of the annual indoor radon concentrations variations due to different geological parameters of Sjenica community, Western Serbia. The measured 222Rn concentrations were ranging from 10 to 1130 Bq/m3. In 14% of the buildings, the radon action level of 300 Bq/m3 is exceeded, indicating that Sjenica community could be characterized as a radon priority area. Each of 35 measuring location was georeferenced and corresponding lithostratigraphic units and geological period was assigned. Data were analyzed using the multiple linear regression (MLR) method and two predictive models were developed. The MLR model generated by the geological periods explained 17% of the radon variability while, the better one, was the lithostratigraphic MLR model, which explained 52% of the radon variability. Analysis has shown that lithostratigraphic units are important parameters in the prediction of radon levels. © 2019 Carpathian Journal of Earth and Environmental Sciences.

abstract = "The paper deals with the analysis of the annual indoor radon concentrations variations due to different geological parameters of Sjenica community, Western Serbia. © 2019 Carpathian Journal of Earth and Environmental Sciences.",

AB - One of the main problems in quantitative gamma-ray spectroscopy is the determination of detection efficiency, for different energies, source-detector geometries, and composition of samples or sources. There are, in principle, three approaches to this issue: experimental, numerical, and semiempirical. Semiempirical approach is based on the calculation of the efficiency for the measured sample on the basis of an experimental efficiency measured on the same detector, but with a calibration source that can be of different size, geometry, density, or composition—the so-called efficiency transfer. The aim of this paper is to analyze the semiempirical approach, using EFFTRAN and MEFFTRAN software as a typical example. These software were used in the Department of Radiation and Environmental Protection, Vinča Institute of Nuclear Sciences, on three HPGe detectors. The results were compared to the experimentally obtained efficiency, and further validation is performed by measuring reference materials issued within the framework of several interlaboratory intercomparisons. The analysis of the results showed that the efficiency transfer produces good results with the discrepancies within the limits of the measurement uncertainty. Also, for intercomparison measurement, u test criterion for the trueness of the result was applied showing that the majority of the obtained results were acceptable. Some difficulties were identified, and the ways to overcome them were discussed.

AB - It is well-known that radon is the second important human carcinogen for lung cancer, after smoking. The major sources of indoor radon concentrations are soil and building material. Under certain conditions, a dose received from the inhalation of radon and its progenies can be higher than a dose received from the external exposure due to radium concentration in building materials. In this contribution, the results of the radon and thoron exhalation rate measurement from 9 commonly used building materials are reported. Exhalation rate measurements were performed with accumulation chamber method using active device for measurement of radon concentration. © 2019 RAD Association. All rights reserved.

AB - The coincidence summing effect plays an important role in HPGe spectrometry, especially at low source-detector distances, due to a large solid angle; therefore, the calculation of correction factors is necessary. The aim of the research described in this paper was to compare values of correction factors for a 22Na point source obtained using the GESPECOR software package (Monte-Carlo method) and experimentally obtained values. Measurements were performed using a semiconductor HPGe spectrometer and the point source axially positioned at nine different distances from the detector end-cap. For the purpose of determining correction factors, a system of equations was formed, which, besides nuclear data as the input parameters, uses the experimentally obtained values of the total count in the entire spectrum, as well as the counts in the full energy peaks. The system of equations was solved for each particular case and correction factors were determined. By comparing the results obtained using the experimental and Monte-Carlo method, it was found that the correction factors for the 22Na point source have discrepancies less than 3%. The significance of these discrepancies was also verified from a statistical point of view using a Student's t-test. © 2019 RAD Association. All rights reserved.

AB - Calorimeters for particle physics experiments with integration time of a few ns will substantially improve the capability of the experiment to resolve event pileup and to reject backgrounds. In this paper the time development of hadronic showers induced by 30 and 60 GeV positive pions and 120 GeV protons is studied using Monte Carlo simulation and beam tests with a prototype of a sampling steel-scintillator hadronic calorimeter. In the beam tests, scintillator signals induced by hadronic showers in steel are sampled with a period of 0.2 ns and precisely time-aligned in order to study the average signal waveform at various locations with respect to the beam particle impact. Simulations of the same setup are performed using the MARS15 code. Both simulation and test beam results suggest that energy deposition in steel calorimeters develop over a time shorter than 2 ns providing opportunity for ultra-fast calorimetry. Simulation results for an ``ideal{''} calorimeter consisting exclusively of bulk tungsten or copper are presented to establish the lower limit of the signal integration window.

AB - In order to compare three different techniques and estimate radiological impact, activity concentration of Pb-210 in coal, slag and ash samples from thermal power plant Nikola Tesla, Serbia, were measured, and results are presented in this study. Determination of Pb-210 was carried out in three ways: using HPGe gamma spectrometer and via in-growth of Po-210 and Bi-210 by alpha-particle spectrometry and proportional counting, respectively. The results obtained for three different techniques were compared. Statistical analysis and comparison of methods were carried out by combination of Z score and chi (2) statistical tests. Tests results, as well as values of measured activities concentrations obtained by alpha and gamma spectrometry, showed that gamma spectrometry is a valid alternative to time-consuming alpha spectrometry for low level activity measurements of Pb-210. This remark is also valid even for gamma spectrometers with poor efficiency in low energy region.

AB - The half-life of Ne-19 was measured using a real-time digital multiparametric acquisition system, providing an accurate time stamp and relevant information on the detector signals for each decay event. An exhaustive offline analysis of the data gave unique access to experimental effects potentially biasing the measurement. After establishing the influence factors impacting the measurement such as after-pulses, pile-up, gain, and baseline fluctuations, their effects were accurately estimated and the event selection optimized. The resulting half-life, 17.2569 +/- 0.0019((stat)) +/- 0.0009((syst)) s, is the most precise up to now for Ne-19. It is found to be in agreement with two recent precise measurements and not consistent with the most recent one [L.J. Broussard et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 212301 (2014)] by 3.0 standard deviations. The full potential of the technique for nuclei with half-lives of a few seconds is discussed.
