AB - Corrosion products formed on the surface of two silver brazing alloys after the potentiostatic polarization in 3.5% sodium chloride solution were characterized by the standard methods such as, the X-ray diffraction, micro-Raman spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectroscopy. This paper presents the results of a laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (LDI MS) analysis as a new approach to the characterization of corrosion products. The potential of the anodic polarization was 0.5 V versus saturated calomel electrode, and the process duration was 300 s. The corrosion layers on both investigated alloys were similar in composition with cuprous chloride and silver chloride as the main components and had strong indications of cuprous oxide formation. The major difference between these two layers was the existence of zinc hydroxychloride as the corrosion product of Ag-Cu-Zn alloy. Palladium compounds were not found in the case of Ag-Cu-Pd alloy. The results of different methods have shown a good consistency. Complementarity between the used methods was useful in the interpretation of the results for each used method. This study has demonstrated that LDI MS can be used as an efficient additional method together with the traditional ones.

AB - Microstructure and phase transitions of selected brazing alloys from the Ag-Cu-Zn ternary system were investigated. Four ternary alloys with silver content in the compositional range from 25 to 60 wt.% were studied using x-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy coupled with the energy-dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). Phase transitions of the investigated alloys were measured using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Experimentally obtained results were compared with the results of a thermodynamic calculation of the phase equilibria according to the CALPHAD method. The experiments confirmed the optimized thermodynamic parameters for the calculations from the thermodynamic assessment in literature. Phase compositions, liquidus and solidus temperatures were confirmed by the EDS and DTA methods. Additionally, the calculated solidification paths and predicted phase transformations were in agreement with the SEM images.

AB - This work is the first to demonstrate the possibilities of direct analysis of the corrosion film formed on Ag43Cu37Zn20 alloy using laser desorption/ionization (LDI) on a commercial matrix-assisted LDI time of flight mass spectrometry (MS) instrument. In the LDI mass spectra measured from the water solution of the corrosion film, the ion species Zn+, Zn(H2O)(+), AgH+, Cu2H+, Cu2O(OH)+, Cu3O(OH)(+) (high intensity), and Cu(OH)(H2O)(+), ZnCl(OH)(H2O)(+), AgCl+, CuCl+ (low intensity) were identified. The LDI mass spectra of the propan-2-ol solution of the corrosion film contains the ions Zn5Cl(OH)(3)(H2O)(11)(+), Zn5Cl2 (OH)(8) (H2O)(6)(+), and Zn5Cl2 (OH)(H2O)(14)(+). Mass spectra were observed at laser energies in the range of 1340-1860 arbitrary units in positive ion mode. Previously, Raman spectra and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis of the same anodic film have shown similar results as LDI MS -that the anodic film contains the mixture of Ag, Cu2O, CuCl, Zn5Cl2(OH)(8) center dot H2O, and beta-Zn(OH) Cl. LDI MS could be a complementary method for XRD and Raman, as demonstrated in this investigation. The LDI MS method greatly reduces the analysis time and amount of the sample compared to traditional methods. For this reason, the LDI MS method can be a useful tool for the fast qualitative screening of corrosion films.

AB - Influence of the addition of three different non-metallic fractions (NMF), obtained by processing of printed circuit boards (PCBs), on the mechanical and thermal properties of unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) based composites were studied in this paper. UPR, based on products of PET depolymerization, and NMF were characterized using FTIR, NMR, optical microscopy and SEM/EDS analysis. Cross-linking density (v), storage modulus (G), damping factor (tan delta) and glass transition temperature (T-g) of the composites were determined from the DMA testing. Tensile (sigma(t)) and flexural (sigma(f)) strength, and micro Vickers hardness indicated good composite performance under static load. Thermal and flame resistant properties were analyzed by TGA/DTG and UL-94 flammability test whereby V-2 category of appropriate composite was achieved. Composites with satisfactory mechanical and thermal properties reflected synergetic effect of constituents obtained from waste materials. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AB - A method of synthesizing Ni-based catalysts supported on alpha-Al2O3-based foams was developed. The foams were impregnated with aqueous solutions of metal chlorides under an air atmosphere using an aerosol route. Separate procedures involved calcination to form oxides and drying to obtain chlorides on the foam surface. The synthesized samples were subsequently reduced with hydrogen. With respect to the Ni/Al2O3 catalysts, the chloride reduction route enabled the formation of a Ni coating without agglomerates or cracks. Further research included catalyst modification by the addition of Pd, Cu, and Fe. The influences of the additives on the degree of reduction and on the low-temperature reduction effectiveness (533 and 633 K) were examined and compared for the catalysts obtained from oxides and chlorides. Greater degrees of reduction were achieved with chlorides, whereas Pd was the most effective modifier among those investigated. The reduction process was nearly complete at 533 K in the sample that contained 0.1wt% Pd. A lower reduction temperature was utilized, and the calcination step was avoided, which may enhance the economical and technological aspects of the developed catalyst production method.
