AB - An optimization of mortar (as matrix), improved with bentonite clay, used for immobilization of radionuclides (60)Co, (137)Cs, (85)Sr and (54)Mn, is presented. A relatively simple mathematical model is given, which permits minimization of leach rate and permeability and maximization of compressive strength. An optimal solution, based on experimental data, is given. These results will be used for a future Serbian radioactive waste disposal center. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AB - We calculate the stopping and image forces on a point charge moving over a single-layer graphene grown on an SiC substrate, and compare them with forces arising when a charge moves over a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in an Ag monolayer on a Si substrate. Given that both these systems constitute a one-atom thick 2DEG, major differences are found in the velocity and distance dependencies of the two forces owing to different electronic structures of the respective 2DEG. Within the massless Dirac fermion picture of graphenes pi electron bands, the inter-band single particle excitations are found to affect the stopping and image forces at high speeds in a substantial way, whereas such excitations are absent in the 2DEG of the metallic layer described by a single parabolic band. AB - The aim of the work was to investigate the in vitro oxidation of diazinon and malathion, organophosphorous pesticides (OPs) containing phosphorthioate group, catalyzed by enzyme myeloperoxidase (MPO). The oxidation was performed in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. The products were identified as oxon derivatives (phosphates), where the sulfur atom from thioate group was substituted by an oxygen atom. No hydrolysis products were detected after enzyme - induced oxidation. The oxidation efficiency was controlled using acethylcholinesterase (AChE) bioassay for determination of oxon derivatives concentration. The influence of OPs concentration, incubation time of OPs with MPO, as well as MPO concentration on the yield of oxo forms was investigated. Kinetic constants of MPO in oxidation of malathion and diazinon were estimated. The maximum concentration of oxo forms was achieved after 10 min incubation of OPs in 50 mM phosphate buffer (pH 6.0) with 100 nM MPO. (C) 2011 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

AB - A study of morphological and composition changes of the WTi/Si system induced by nanosecond and picosecond laser pulses is presented. A 190 nm thick WTi film was deposited on a silicon substrate of n-type (100). The pulsed laser systems used were: nanosecond TEA CO(2) laser (emission, 10.6 mu m; pulse FWHM; pulse duration 120 ns) and picosecond Nd:YAG laser (emission, 532 nm; pulse FWHM; pulse duration 40 ps). During experiments the used fluences (Phi) had similar values, Phi(1) = 20 J cm(-2) in case of the TEA CO(2) laser and Phi(2) = 16 J cm(-2) for the Nd: YAG laser. The laser-induced morphological and composition modifications showed a dependence on pulse duration. Generally, the following morphological changes were observed: (i) ablation/exfoliation of the WTi thin film, (ii) appearance of hydrodynamic features such as resolidified material, and (iii) formation of nano-sized grains and globules. Overall morphological modifications were more pronounced after the picosecond laser action. The surface composition analysis showed a quite different distribution of sample components depending on the pulse duration. Formation of the silicon dioxide (SiO(2)) was recorded only in the case of irradiation of the WTi/Si system by picosecond laser pulses.

AB - Nanocomposite made of 10 wt% of Co2.4Al0.6O4 particles dispersed in an amorphous SiO2 matrix has been synthesized by a solgel method. X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and magnetic measurements have been used to characterize the properties of nanocomposite. Most of the particles are well crystallized and have an average diameter below 100 nm. Smaller particles with size below 10 nm have also been observed. A large value of the effective magnetic moment per Co2+ ion of 5.08 mu B and negative and the low CurieWeiss paramagnetic temperature Theta similar to -6 K, obtained from the high-temperature susceptibility data, indicate a possible mixing of Co2+ and Co3+ ions between tetrahedral and octahedral sites of the spinel crystal lattice. The measurements of static and dynamic magnetic susceptibilities have shown that Co2.4Al0.6O4 particles in SiO2 matrix display a spin glass behavior at low temperatures. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V.
